Highland Park Whisky Distillery

Mentioned on
Distillery
Food & Drink
South of Kirkwall lies a serious malt whisky distillery, Highland Park Whisky Distillery, which offers guided tours that include a tasting experience. The hour-long tour is well-informed and showcases the distillery's barley malting process, including its peat kiln. Novices and aficionados alike can enjoy the soft and balanced 12-year-old standard malt, while more specialized tours offer tastings of older whiskies for an additional fee.
We booked a two hour tour and tasting. We felt it was well worth it. James, our tour guide was a pleasure.

Wow what a place and what a tour. We are given the history of the land and how long they've been in service. We learned about how they processed all their food and how they did everything and it was quite spectacular to see the hundreds of barrels of whiskey waiting to be consumed and bottled. The tasting we did was definitely worth the price. We had some incredible spirits. We enjoyed our guide. He took us through the whole property and then at the end we were give it an opportunity to buy some limited edition. Whiskeys. Definitely give yourself an hour check to place out. You will definitely love it
Justin Derevyanik — Google review
Review explicitly for their tours: For 30 pounds it's a bit short and lacking information, funny stories, anecdotes and a welcoming feeling. It's all a bit technical: Here's the movie, there's the stills, here's fermentation. Any questions? Whiskey is great though and also the tasting was very well presented. It all just feels a bit uninterested and cold.
Fairy Duster — Google review
A really great tour, fantastic guide and amazing tasting. A unique distillery.
Jarod Glover — Google review
My partner surprised me with a visit and a tour of the distillery. It really was a fantastic experience that I would recommend to any whisky lover. Not only were we treated to an in-depth personal tour of the distillery, but also an interesting fact filled history starting from its very beginnings. Our tour guide, Rupert, has intelligent, witty, fun and engaging with his knowledge of this distillery. The whiskies we sampled were out of this world, flavoursome and very moreish! Thank you so much for such a wonderful day! Cannot wait to return!

I had a truly amazing once in a lifetime amazing visit with John and Steve. Simply mind-blowing, amazing. Incredible.
Francois Maignen — Google review
This was probably the best distillery tour I have done. The tour was informative, and the guide was very knowledgeable. We were able to see where each step of the whisky-making process takes place. The whiskies we tried were quite good, and we were walked through how to best appreciate them. At the end, we were able to take a whisky glass as a souvenir, which was a nice touch.
John Schroebel — Google review
We did The Spirit of Orkney Experience and it was the best distillery tour I've been on. Very informative and interactive. The guide was good fun and able to engage the group easily.
Arlene Smith — Google review
Welcoming and friendly staff, John was a great guide with wast knowledge of the production and a clear passion for his job and place to work. Excellent touch to have a wee dram before the tour and a few more after. Visit was very informative and pleasant, a highly recommended experience. And needless to say, the whisky was fantastic!!
Nicki Annica Jutbauge — Google review
This is going to be short and sweet. 11/10. From start to finish, John the guide and driver was a top notch Orkadian and really connected us to the island. Keith was a patient and knowledgeable guide at the distillery when I was the one talking his ear off. The whisky is second to none. The distillery is like Willy Wonka's chocolate factory for adults. Go here at least once before you die.

An absolutely fantastic distillery experience. My friend and I visited here during our road trip around the Orkneys. The guide was very informative and the whisky samples were very nice. Thank you Highland Park! 🥃🥃🥃🥃🥃

This alone is worth a trip to Kirkwall. Learning the past and future of Highland Park was an absolute joy… and the rare drams were amazing. Rupert is a true historian and storyteller.

Beautiful distillery with so much history. Our guide Karen provided us with a very beautiful tour and plenty of information. It was indeed a real pleasure hearing her talk about the place and the history. Tasting the whisky in the tasting room is quite an experience in itself :) would recommend

Ring of Brodgar

Mentioned on
Historical landmark
Sights & Landmarks
The Ring of Brodgar is a striking stone circle that dates back to the late Neolithic era. Originally consisting of 60 standing stones, the circle now boasts 36 impressive stones, surrounded by ditches and causeways. Situated approximately five miles northeast of Stromness, this historical site offers a unique atmosphere with its beautiful countryside surroundings. A path leading up from the free car park allows for easy accessibility to this must-see monument in Orkney.
Simply stunning site, from wherever you view it. Leaves you in awe of the people who erected these stones thousands of years ago. The countryside around adds to a unique atmosphere. The circle is close to the road so is easily found, and a path up from the free car park makes it easily accessible. A must see for anyone visiting Orkney.
John Lancaster — Google review
Overcast, but no rain. Wind, oh YES! Hardest part of the visit when there was such a long (400yd) walk to get there from the parking lot. Wonderful to see such a circular monument about 600 years older than Stone henge.
D S. — Google review
Beautiful formation of stones with so much history! There’s a path that you can take that walks you round the stones. At the minute you can’t get right up to them due to the path being rested but you can see them perfectly well.
Katie Paterson — Google review
Definitely one of the top things to see in the Orkney Islands. It's so interesting to see the huge stones and wonder how they got here and what they were used for. Would definitely put this on your list of things to see
Jim C — Google review
Very interesting. There are guides there to answer questions and give you background information.Cannot touch stones, only walk around them from behind a moat that is actually part of the ring. Added bonus...it's free! I think it's a must do.
Rosemarie Szalich — Google review
It was very interesting for me to see those old standing stones but probably not everyone choice. Anyway they looks beautiful and view there is amazing.
MATDAR MATDAR — Google review
The real deal! I was there early to avoid the busses of people. The inside path is closed still during spring, so the ground can recover. One can then only walk on the outside path. Best photos are taken from the hilltop, as it’s not even ground.
Laguz Elbedottir — Google review
Very striking to see the Ring of Brodgar come into view. Easy walking and wheelchair access. Free and no need to book in advance. Spectacular views!
Gilly Catley — Google review
Visited the Ring by taking the public bus from Kirkwall, and the bus driver was happy to tell us when to get off. It's a 1 mile walk to the Ring, and you pass the Stones of Stenness on the way. The Ring appears on the horizon as you approach, and you begin to appreciate the great size of it. The Ring is surrounded by a ditch and is free to visit, but you can't enter inside it. It's good to walk around the Ring and marvel how it was constructed thousands of years ago with no mechanical help. It's greatly impressive and well worth a visit. It's good then to take the bus to Stromness after walking back up the lane, before returning to Kirkwall.
Leslie Jones — Google review
Yet another spectacular stone circle/ alignment that's a must see. Plenty of parking nearby. It's a bit of a climb to the stones themselves if you're not fit, but we'll worth the effort. Well worn track guides you around the perimeter and takes about 15 minutes. No charge to view.
Frank Murphy — Google review
Obviously a must-see when visiting Orkney. Every such monument you want to be on your own for taking photos and for atmosphere but that's not easy in summer. It was still a great place to stand and take in the views and atmosphere.
Jim Pettitt — Google review
We visited the Ring of Brodgar, Orkney Islands Scotland on a Princess Cruise on May 16, 2022. The monument is bigger than Stonehenge and was a view of some of Neolothic Man's accomplishments around 4500 years ago. Happy to say this was now one of my bucket list places to visit in Scotland.

A Mystic Circle in the Highlands - The Ring of Brodgar : A must-see on our NC500 adventure was the Ring of Brodgar, an awe-inspiring part of the Heart of Neolithic Orkney World Heritage Site. This ancient stone circle and henge monument serves as a captivating window into Scotland's Neolithic past. The sheer scale of the monument is a sight to behold. The ring, comprising numerous stones, creates a majestic spectacle against the surrounding landscape of lochs and hills. The setting sun casts an ethereal glow on the stones, making for an unforgettable visual experience. Walking among these ancient megaliths, we couldn't help but feel a sense of connection to the people who erected them over 4,000 years ago. The site is well-preserved, allowing us to fully appreciate its historical significance. Informative boards around the site offer fascinating insights into the ring's possible ceremonial uses and the people who might have used it. This information brought a deeper understanding and respect for the monument and its creators. Despite being a popular site, the Ring of Brodgar never felt crowded. There is a tranquillity here that adds to the overall experience. Accessibility is excellent, with convenient parking and easy-to-navigate paths leading to the monument. In conclusion, the Ring of Brodgar is an extraordinary piece of Neolithic heritage that brings a rich depth to the NC500 journey. Its historical significance, combined with its stark beauty, makes it a site that cannot be missed. It's a place that invites contemplation and provides a tangible link to our ancient ancestors. Also very good to drive with the Scewo BRO electric wheelchair 😎👍
Michael Hagmann — Google review
Breathtaking. I have no idea why anyone would rate this stunning place less than five stars unless it happened to be very crowded or they were wearing stiletto heels or suede loafers (it’s a little muddy). You can’t walk inside the ring or up to the stones, but the views all around them are stunning. It is a little bit of a walk - maybe 200 yards? - from the car park. It’s incredible to see these massive slabs hauled from miles away thousands of years ago. The visit is free … no cost for parking.
Rolf Asphaug — Google review
Easy to get to on the island with ample parking. There are two areas to look at here with access to the rings managed to protect the environment. No charge.

Skara Brae Prehistoric Village

Mentioned on
Sights & Landmarks
Historical landmark
Located on a picturesque sandy bay approximately 8 miles north of Stromness, Skara Brae Prehistoric Village is an exceptional historical site consisting of the remains of eight houses believed to have been inhabited around 3000 BC. This neolithic village predates Stonehenge and the pyramids of Giza, and is considered as one of the world's most well-preserved prehistoric sites in northern Europe.
An extraordinary place set in the most beautiful location. There’s a good visitor centre but nothing prepares you for the sight of this 5,000 year old village community and its state of preservation. The guide at the site was excellent too: enthusiastic and very knowledgeable. We were lucky to have the place almost to ourselves and it was lovely just to stand and be content with silence as you look down through the centuries into how these ancient people lived their lives. Highly recommended.

Outstanding site and museum .Book in advance ,only allowed in with prior booking . Great place, beautiful beach to have a wander on too . Cafe and toilets

Marvellous and wonderful ancient village preserved for 1000s of years by the encroaching dunes. Fantastic visitor centre helps understand how the village and people survived and flourished in this tough environment. The village itself is small but very interesting and I'm sure it was comfortable at its height. Allow approx. 45 minutes to view everything at a comfortable pace. Cafe and toilets available Parking also available.

Visited a couple of weeks ago while I was in Orkney. Very interesting place to visit on a stunning coastline. We had a lovely day, with sunshine. I would recommend visiting if you get the chance.
Janette Gollan — Google review
Amazing to walk around and see all the historic sites. All very well preserved and really interesting to be able to look at the houses & enter in to the recreation house too. There were a few information boards around so you could find out a bit about how they think things would have been used. The cafe had an incredibly long queue though. Obviously we didn’t have to decide to wait, that was our choice so can’t complain about - but it was about 40 minutes wait as a pre warning. They did only have two people working though. You do have to book in advance.
Katie Paterson — Google review
Very cool prehistoric site. Hard to believe that people lived here more than 4000 years ago. So interesting to see their huts and learn how they lived. Definitely one of the top sites on the outlet Orkney Islands and worth the visit. Definitely recommend
Jim C — Google review
Fantastic job by locals in preserving these ruins. A museum, gift shop, and cafe are on-site. Recommend making reservations. Your ticket gets you into the neighboring Skaill House. You could complete the village in 1.5 hours. Add at least 30min if you visit Skaill House. Plenty of parking.
Steven Redmond — Google review
A wonderful glimpse into the distant past. Really interesting and managed by friendly, helpful staff. English Heritage membership gives a discount in Historic Scotland sites. Advisable to book in advance.
John Maybury — Google review
Fascinating neolithic site in a spectacular beachside location.  Excellent interpretation, including a mock-up of one of the living areas that you can walk into (to preserve the actual site it must be viewed from external walkways). Easy parking, and nice cafe.
Peter Tudor — Google review
I doubt anyone, even those who have no interest in history, can fail to be impressed by this 5,000 year old village. We were absolutely fascinated by what we saw and learned about the way people lived and their customs all those years ago. The remains are incredibly well preserved so it is possible to see individual rooms laid out, but the centre has also recreated one home to get the full effect. There are plenty of information boards around the site but the friendly and informative guides also answered any questions for us. Most of the site is accessible but the centre hires out motorised scooters too. There is a cafe on site and toilets. A fabulous visit, I am sure that this will certainly be at the top of anyone's list when visiting Orkney. I just hope it can survive the encroaching sea as it is very, very close.
John Lancaster — Google review
Incredible to be here. So well preserved. They also had an amazing cafe there. So it makes for a great lunch spot. I recommend the sandwiches! But amazing soup too!
TJ Whiting — Google review
Very best to go visit. The coastal areas can be rather windy, so dress appropriately and throwing in gloves might be good. You cannot walk inside of it, but there’s a path around.above it and the path crossing through part of it. There is also a model house you might say to go through prior. The short film is worth watching. The path is paved and it’s not a hard walk. The car park did seem to fill up within an hour of opening the day we went, but people were coming and going continually. The cafe is fairly standard for one of their locations. No wifi on site. Your ticket includes entrance to the mansion next door and is good for kids with a mouse hunt activity. It’s rather pricey for a family, so the yearly membership to the organisations is worth it, especially if you plan to visit other sites in Scotland. Also, just south a bit is Yesnaby, which is worth the short drive to the car park and to take a walk.
Santa Chris — Google review
A must visit. Go early, right at opening at 9:30am; or an hour before closing. Bus loads of people will otherwise be there.

St Magnus Cathedral

Mentioned on
Cathedral
Sights & Landmarks
The northernmost cathedral in Britain, St Magnus Cathedral in Kirkwall was built by the Vikings using multi-colored sandstone. This impressive structure dating back to the 12th century is made of local red sandstone and is considered one of Scotland's most fascinating cathedrals. The interior atmosphere exudes an ancient faith with lyrical epitaphs on its walls emphasizing bereavement from the 17th- and 18th-century periods.
A must-see when in Kirkwall. Beautiful cathedral full of history and quirks, such as the leaning columns and spotting the original stonemasons' marks. There's a very handy leaflet (available in English, French, German and Italian as well as a version in a number of far Eastern languages) as well as a more comprehensive guide book. I would recommend buying one or the other for the information and insight they give. There's a very small selection of gifts/souvenirs for those that want them, all done on an honesty box system. Absolutely wonderful cathedral, definitely worth a visit. And take the time to really explore it - it's fascinating.
Catherine Cowlishaw — Google review
Beautiful ancient church that's hard to miss when visiting Kirkwall. Unfortunately it was closed when I visited so I wandered the surrounding graveyard and made do with taking photos of the headstones and church exterior. Easy access with plenty of parking nearby. Highly recommended.

Wow....amazing place. Lovely architecture and history. Free entry. Some fascinating tombstones to read inside. Be careful as they close for lunch so check opening hours. We found the cemetery held some interesting people too and spent ages outside as well. The iron work around some of the plots is varied and beautiful. Well worth looking at. I could of spent more time here.
Dawn Davies — Google review
Simply one of the most spectacular cathedrals I've had the pleasure of visiting with an equally incredible history. Few can said to be named for a 'Pagan Saint' and fewer still a Viking one. The stonework is beautiful. It is true that when Christians make a church they truly do not miss!

Stunning. Simply stunning. This is a must-see stop for any Scotland adventure. There's no entrance fee. It's a quiet place to contemplate.

Very tranquil building to visit. There was an artist painting inside, his pictures were beautiful, capturing the changing light shining through glass windows. The organ was being played, which added to the atmosphere.
Karen Douglas — Google review
The most beautifully crafted piece of architecture I have ever seen. No photos in the world will do it justice. The history is very interesting too. Had the pleasure of meeting one of the custodian of the cathedral, Ingrid, who shared her family history and connection with the cathedral with us. What an amazingand humble woman! We also sang folk song we both new in Swedish. A very peaceful place. Don't miss when in Kirkwall!

This place was amazing and just the right amount of creepy. I highly recommend visiting this church and the cute shopping area just outside its gates.
Debra Doser — Google review
Once the most southern cathedral in Scandannavia, now the most northern in the UK. Built after Magnus was made a saint in 1133 by his nephew Rognavald and his remains taken from St Magnus Church in Birsay to Kirkwall, and later found in a pillar within the Cathedral. Known by the skull struck down the middle as stated in the Orkney Inga sagas. Perfect acoustics for concerts, which we heard fiddlers from the local secondary school, playing to commemorate Norway Constitutional day, as Orkney once belonged to the Norway kingdom, given as a dowry in 1492 when King James 3rd of Scotland was to wed Princess Margaret of Norway. Also houses a memorial to John Rae who discovered the fatal Franklin expedition of the North West Passage in Canada, and the bell from the Royal Oak, which sunk in nearby Scapa Flow, only 6 weeks into WW2 with the loss of 833 men, and resulted in Winston Churchill ordering the barriers be built to the southern isles.
The Amazing Adventures of Alan Aim — Google review
Incredible building to have survived Orkney weather for nearly 900 years! You can see the massive stone blocks more clearly inside the cathedral and marvel at how all this was achieved just using hand tools, manpower and horsepower. Also there is a poignant tribute to those lost in HMS Royal Oak, torpedoed in Scapa Flow in 1939.

Yesnaby

Mentioned on

Sights & Landmarks
Yesnaby offers a stunning vista point for hiking and climbing on sandstone cliffs with breathtaking views of sea stacks, blowholes, and nesting puffins. The area boasts resilient Orkney primroses that grow despite the harsh conditions. During Westerly gales, visitors can witness waves crashing on rocks and streams being blown upward from the cliffs. The location is perfect for watching sunsets, going on a clifftop walk or enjoying photo opportunities towards the sea stacks.
I came to see the Orkney primroses - I was not disappointed, what brave little plants to try growing here. If there's a Westerly gale blowing this is a striking place, with great waves crashing on the rocks and streams being blown back UP the cliffs and, I expect, some lovely sunsets. A great place to park up and watch or for a bracing clifftop walk.
David Williams — Google review
Really great walk. Can be a bit wet in places so good footwear is a must but otherwise a relatively straightforward walk. Weather in Orkney can change very dramatically in minutes so best to be prepared for bad weather. Amazing seascape with lots of cliff views, sea stacks and bird life in the fields, on the cliff and in the sea.

Stunning area, the cliff tops are beautiful. Was a cold and windy day but was still stunning. See the waves hit the rocks. Great place to take a walk on a sunny day.
Sarah Bancroft — Google review
A lovely cliffside walk, lots of fossilised sand beds to look out for. The views are lovely, but very exposed. The car park is small, we ended up parked on the grass. A coach driver performed a small miracle turning his coach around 180° in a packed car park with a turning space smaller than the footprint of the coach. I suspect he was a timelord. There are no facilities other than the car park, but there were some information boards. Suprising given it was one of the busiest places we stopped.

Beautiful walk - would recommend shoes with decent grip but nothing special required! Great photo opportunities out towards the sea stacks and the old man of hoy is visible (if very small and far away!)

A restaurant known for its tasty food and cozy interior, Helgi's is a great place to enjoy a British or European comfort fare in railroad-style space. With wine and beer available as well as American Express, Mastercard, and Visa accepted, the restaurant is a great choice for those looking for a relaxing evening out. The waitstaff are attentive and will be happy to help with any questions or reservations.
They hve got good vegeterian options. I enjoyed the food. Local beers! Plus is place is open till late compared to the small town of Kirkwall. And location is so reachable just in front of the docks with a nearby parking place.

Excellent food, nice drinks, but more important: amazing staff. Very friendly and ready to think out of the box. We had not reserved, so we had to sit at the bar for our dinner … until a person sitting at a table said that he would prefer to sit at the bar for his beer. The staff immediately realised that we might want to swap. I love it when the staff in a pub is attentive!

Myself and my friend visited Helgi's twice in a week while on holiday on Orkney. Both visits were great, the beer and the food were very good and the staff were very friendly. A special thanks goes to Jenna for looking after us very well and for the recommendations she gave me for different local gins to try. I would not hesitate to return.

Emailed to book a table in advance, would highly recommend doing this as they get fully booked. We arrived a bit early so ended up having a drink at the bar, that wasn't an issue and they added it to our final bill. I tried the salt and chilli squid for a starter and then the haggis burger for main, it was really tasty and filling. Although the view overlooking the harbour is stunning, sadly we were at the back of the room so couldn't see it but it's in a great location. Free parking is also available just outside.

We dined here two nights in a row during our holiday. It was a very comfortable environment with a varied menu and really good, tasty food. The service on the first night was excellent especially as it was quite busy and the girls on staff were constantly on the go. There were different staff on the next night and service was much slower - we had to wait a considerable time to order food after sitting at the table and then again to order dessert at the end of the meal. Would definitely recommend booking as it is a very busy venue and several walk-ins were turned away on both nights we were there.

Stopped by for food on a Wednesday in September but was fully booked. Had a couple of drinks, and its a small bar but great vibe, staff shaking cocktails and busy. I had one of the 5 local beers on draught, Scapa, a nice hop light ale hand pulled for just over a fiver.

Expectations were high following recommendations from our usually reliable travel agency. On arrival, we stood around and eventually had to ask a not very friendly barman where to go - go upstairs he said - your table is in the lefthand corner! Upstairs was noisy (loud swearing students) and dark ( light globe off over our table). Then waited 20 minutes for an even less friendly/responsive waiter to approach us about food and drinks. Food was actually OK (good solid food and value for money); desserts came without spoons and we could not catch the attention of the waiter to get any. In short, the evening was spoiled by the very poor service, despite some attempts at apology from senior waitress.
Brendan Murphy — Google review
Worse service ever! Got there at 1800 hr. when they first opened for the evening. Didn’t get the main course until 2000 hr. We ordered the seafood chowder, Thai beef curry and Thai salmon fish cakes. Shortly after we ordered the waitress came back and said the beef would not be ready for an hour. We said we would eat our other food first while we waited for the beef dish. She said we couldn’t because they would need the table for someone else. So we agreed to substitute the beef for chicken. While we waited a large party came in and the noise level increased tremendously. When everyone around us was getting their meal we questioned why we didn’t get ours. Found out our order was stuck to another order so got missed. By the time the main meals came they were average, a little pricey for what you got. The waitress did apologized, gave us two small squares and charged us the full amount. We had enough of the noise and poor service so just wanted to get out of there. Not such a good place like the reviews from others say.

Food here was amazing! The staff were friendly & we were sat in a booth by the window upstairs with a great view of the harbour. We had a jug of pink mojito (mojito with cranberry juice) cocktail too which was nice too. We had the cumin cauliflower & halloumi fries to start and then fish and chips for the main. Restaurant
Lucano is a popular Italian restaurant in Kirkwall with friendly and welcoming staff. The kitchen staff are skilled at accommodating dietary restrictions, and there are a variety of good wines on the menu. The patron is happy to give advice on wine choices.
The food was very good and staff were helpful and attentive menu was quite diverse all in all A good experience

Popped in for a quick bite. We had the minestrone soup and a toastie. It was very tasty and hot. Staff were friendly and helpful. We were the only people there, it was 3pm, therefore no atmosphere to report. Would recommend 👌

The food was excellent and there was a great atmosphere. We all enjoyed ourselves. Price was appropriate for the quality of the food. My grandson was impressed by his Pizza. Thank you Lucanos for a great night

Some of the cheeriest people I've had the pleasure of being served by. Helpful, enthusiastic and pleasant. Nothing seemed a bother for them. The family thoroughly enjoyed their food, but I have to say that the prices were quite high, especially for the pizza, which was only above average for an Italian restaurant. (I know we like our cheese in Scotland, but it doesn't have to drown the entire pizza!) Edit: We returned a second night and I decided to try pasta instead. I opted for a tomato based dish with spicy sausage. The sauce was flavourful, but a little watery. The sausage was a disappointment. Rather than containing substantial pieces of sausage, it was merely thinly sliced pizza pepperoni, further cut up. The quality and portion size doesn't justify the price.

Lucannos really is our go-to place for lunch or dinner in Kirkwall. We are so happy they made it though the COVID and make lovely Italian meals for us here in Orkney. They are a community asset. Tourists who think they should have cheap food in Orkney need consider the service they are getting and where they are. And tip big.

Great service from lovely, attentive, friendly staff. Food quality was 100% Italian, carbonara cooked to perfection in the traditional Italian way. Friendly, fun banter between staff coming from the kitchen, which is always nice to hear. Only sad to be Leaving Orkney as I want to go back again and sample more of there menu. Even the house wine was excellent. If I come back to Kirkwall, Orkney I'll be going back to this restaurant for sure. Must try a pizza as they looked amazing too.

Fantastish Italian dishes. Excellent Minestrone and my Calzone was gorgeous. Also wine, coffee and the desserts perfect. Nice and attentive service. Thanks, coming again

Fabulous… an expression of hospitality standards that all restaurants & cafes in Orkney need to match. Authentic Italian cuisine & expresso. I’m vegetarian and they have great vegetarian daily specials. During my four day stay here, drove from stromness & dined here everyday. It’s worth the journey 😀 Thank you

Middling food lacking flavour. Not very fresh salad (probably pre-cut hours ago). Desserts on the menu are uninspired - almost all were variants of vanilla ice cream. We instead chose a “Highland Park cheese cake” from the display case, which turned out to be mostly flavoured whipped cream with more whipped cream from a can on the side. Probably the worst chesse cake I’ve had (couldn’t finish it). One in our party said he came closer and closer to throwing up with each bite. High prices, especially for what you’re getting. Service was efficient and competent. Would not visit again.

I visited here whilst on a road trip for a wee bite to eat. I just wanted a small snack do ordered a bacon & egg ciabatta which I can quite honestly say was possibly one of the best butties I've had in a long time, the bacon was perfectly cooked as was the egg which was hard and not runny, just as we had requested. I would recommend visiting here to anyone if you are looking for something similar👍🏼

This restaurant is fabulous. We ate here on two evenings during our trip to Orkney. Both times the food was exceptional and the service perfect. It’s also well priced. Try their gooseberry and apple treacle crumble if it’s on the specials, it’s truly fabulous.

No complaints really, great food, nice music and ambience. Had a lovely lunch break there. My only moment of confusion was the focaccia I ordered that turned out to be a pizza base with oil garlic and rosemary when I was expecting the fluffy bread version. It was still quite tasty so I didn't feel I had to bring it up.

We loved the staff - super friendly & enthusiastic. The restaurant is clean and bright but perhaps a little bit like a canteen. The food, the main reason for coming to a restaurant: It was OK, nothing you could really complain about, but nothing really stood out either. The pizzas were tasty but quite thinly topped and the bolognese was rather watery. Prices somewhat on the high side for what you get.

Very tasty food, reasonably priced. Great service despite staff shortages. Nothing was a problem for them. Worth a visit.

I was visiting Orkney and did not find any other options for Italian food so I decided to check out this place. The bill for a pizza, a pasta, garlic bread with cheese, a slice of cheesecake, and one coffee was about forty pounds. According to Orkney rates, that is on the pricier side. The food was a good change from the other food I had been having at Orkney but I would recommend the staff make their pizzas more exciting; like adding or providing olive oil for the pizzas. If you are looking for Italian food, do check out Lucano and be specific about what you need with the staff. Do not rely on the reviews of others.

The food was delicious, seafood Linguine, but totally overpriced for a pasta dish. Atmosphere was OK, but bustling and packed. I didn't want to spend any more time there after I finished my dinner, which is probably what they want. The beer selection is good but again, way to expensive - 7 quid for a pint? The place is up for sale, by the way (6/2022)

The Foveran is a family-run restaurant that specializes in shellfish and Scottish cuisine from local produce. They also have sea-view rooms. The food was excellent, especially the steak which was cooked to perfection. The only downside was that they did not offer a take away breakfast which left us at 6am for our early ferry the next morning. The service was friendly and efficient.
Stayed for 3 nights. Excellent service, friendly staff especially Jordan who was great fun and efficient. Restaurant food was really good only wish they would give you a take away breakfast as we left at 645am for early ferry, didnt want to eat at 6am cereal and toast they had kindly left for us. Room was super too. Highly recommend.

Going to the Foveran is always a treat. You feel so special from the moment you walk in. There is usually only one veggie main course option but I am confident they would meet any dietary requirements.

The squid starter was lovely, crispy, light batter and juicy squid. The fillet steak was cooked to perfection and so big I asked for a doggy bag! Lovely service and great views.

Surprised at the size of the place as it is well hidden at the road end and entrance is intimate but as you walk through to the dining area it opens up into a huge area with windows all around. The menu offered a few treats or nibbles to start and we tried the smoked queenies (scallops) fantastic, don’t miss them. Lots of local produce to try, with specials available. We went local as far as possible. Scallops, Grimbister cheese, halibut, lovely. The service was great and the evening was much enjoyed.

Returned after five years. Astonishing: the rooms are in exact the same immaculate condition as if the time could not leave any mark on them. Well appointed, comfortable and quiet. The restaurant is as convincing as it was five years ago. Nicely presented dishes of high quality with well sourced produce prepared to a high standard. Wine list is quite vast with lots to choose from - only thing missing is beer from the tap as it is sold by the bottle only.
Markus Dahmann — Google review
Highest quality food and seafood in stunning picturesque setting. Seafood platter and fillet steak were excellent. it's worth the price for great food. Limited menu but they just cook the best local quality produce and present it beautifully. Great friendly staff here as everywhere in Orkney.
Sam Cairns — Google review
I had dinner in the restaurant, but didn't stay in the accommodation. Overall, based on my experience, I'd suggest if you are a steak person, you should prioritise a meal here. I had the starter special of lobster cocktail, which was a lobster instead of prawn but otherwise pretty traditional approach to prawn cocktail. For main, I had the Foveran fillet steak, which was served perfectly rare, as ordered, and really pretty excellent. Side of potato was great, half crispy, half boiled. Dessert was the lemon posset, which was lovely but a little sweet for me. A cup of tea came with a lovely little selection of fudge and shortbread. Wine list was good, but not extensive.

We really enjoyed our 5 night stay here recently. The hotel is situated approx. 10 minutes drive out of Kirkwall on a hill overlooking Scapa beach. The whole hotel is tastefully decorated and is spotlessly clean. Our bedroom (which was cleaned daily) had a large ensuite shower with a huge walk in shower and complimentary toiletries. The restaurant and bar area has a large balcony area and the views over Scapa bay are simply stunning. Our stay came with bed and breakfast but the food is so good that we also chose to eat in every night. The staff in the hotel were really friendly and so helpful and polite and bent over backwards to help us with any queries. Orkney itself is the most beautiful and friendly place. highly recommend both Orkney and in particular this hotel.

Bar
The Ferry Inn is a popular pub in the town of Stromness on the Orkney Islands. It features simple, modern bedrooms and an outdoor seating area that's perfect for watching the sunset. The food is excellent, with items like lobster proving especially popular with customers. The staff are friendly and accommodating, making it a great choice for those looking for a place to eat after exploring the island attractions nearby.
Was in Stromness during a quiet weeknight. Had to check in with the bartender, which was awesome. Cozy little room with a harbor view was very clean. Small, but clean and functional for a solo traveler, would be fine for more as well. Just manage your expectations as the room did have a damp scent, not unpleasant but I have seen other reviews that mentioned this and people need to remember it's a hotel practically on the water in a cool rainy place. Just crank up the radiator and all is well. Would stay again, the pub is the place to be!

Unfriendly greeting from grumpy person behind bar. We were almost laughed at when we asked if we could just stand and have a drink while we waited for our table. Food mediocre, service good, though took some prompting, and server cheerful. This was our first visit in about 3 years and clearly, it's not a pub anymore.

I am not prone to hyperbole but this was one of the most incredible meals I have experienced. From start to finish all three of us were praising every mouthful. Our starters were Scallops with black pudding and Cheese fried in breadcrumbs. The main courses were the Chicken with Haggis and Lamb, perfectly cooked and seasoned. Orkney ice cream and a cheese board. Scapa 12 yr old whisky to finish. Perfect.

The hotel is located right in front of the ferry terminal and you can park in the ferry lot for less than £3 per day (it rolls over to 9am the next day). Everything about this inn was fantastic. Our room was actually in the building behind the main building and we just strolled over in the morning for breakfast, which was included in the price. The staff were lovely, the food was great, and the room was very comfortable. One of the better showers we've encountered and I loved the light built into the bathroom mirror. Lots of room and storage if you're planning a longer stay.

Stayed here for one night last minute when another hotel cancelled due to a power outage. It was quiet, clean, and warm--just the thing for a chilly, windy night! Breakfast was yummy, and the staff were really kind and accommodating with our requests for hot water and stowing out bags as we walked around the island. We enjoyed chatting with them. Definitely would recommend!

Ferry inn which is owed by a local family has a nice bar area and a nice restaurant where you can enjoy local drinks and local food. The rooms are nice enough although i have not seen them all. Absolutely superb location on the seafront of Stromness harbour where you can see the fishing boats come in. There is a few music festivals throughout the year like the Orkney Folk Festival which the Ferry inn hosts musicians for gigs/events.

The Ferry Inn was the centerpiece of our Orkney trip. Karen, Gareth, and all of their staff made us feel at home from the moment we arrived. The bar, the food, the rooms, everything was splendid. If you are looking for a warm, comfortable, hospitable stay, you can't beat this place. We'll definitely be back.

Rip off. 2 x fish and chips, 2 pints each £65. Don’t mind paying when it’s good but it was average at best. Unfortunately the choice in this town is very limited so they have a captive audience. They price knowing that. Go to co op and buy some snacks instead. Such a shame as this could be a fantastic pub given its location.

A true gem of a place. Absolutely recommended for anyone looking stay in Stromness! Charming older building with all the quirks and foibles that give so much character, but nicely modernized. Very clean and well kept. The staff was wonderfully helpful and friendly. The bar and restaurant are top notch and the perfect place to wind down after a day of exploration. I will absolutely book here again whenever I return to Orkney.

I would strongly advise anyone to keep clear of this establishment, my work colleagues and I decided to treat ourselves to or favorite cuisine and we were left extremely disappointed, The food was very bland and taste less, and the service was shocking , one waiter for 30+ customers, It gets better we each paid separately which I wouldn't see been an issue, they really struggled with this simple task, it took a good 15min, I was the last to pay and left, As we were walking away from the restaurant the owner I think came running out pointing looking very angry saying "you no pay" I went back in to see if there was an issue, he wanted £35 more but could not explain what it was for , I asked politely did you make a mistake, he replied abruptly No, At this stage the whole restaurant was looking at me I felt so embarrassed I just paid him,

We ordered takeaway on 2 March 2024. I've eaten at Dil Se a number of times before and it's always okay - no more than that. Sadly "okay" is the best you will get anywhere in Kirkwall. I had the chicken tikka chilli garlic and my partner had the tandoori mixed grill. We also had a garlic naan. Chicken tikka chilli garlic is a dish I enjoy and the flavour profile was okay. Very garlicky which I like although I normally prefer it a bit hotter. Sadly the chicken was pre-cooked and noticeably stale. The tandoori mixed grill included pieces of chicken breast and lamb with some chicken on the bone. It came with a basic salad and creamy dip. Again flavour okay if a bit lacking in depth. The lamb was reasonably tender but chicken quite rubbery. All the meats had been pre-cooked and then re-heated. The garlic naan, as is typical for Orkney, was thick and doughy with not much garlic. My personal preference is to stretch the dough a bit thinner and have more garlic. On the pre-cooking of chicken etc: there are lots of restaurants which do this to save time but it is very noticeable. If your processes are properly engineered it's not difficult to skewer the meat and put it in the tandoor as the orders come in, which doesn't really take any longer than using the microwave to re-heat it. The service was fine as it always is and I have found the atmosphere fine when I've dined in before, although tonight we had takeaway. Overall, the lack of attention to detail with the food is the difference between a two star meal and a four star meal.

Disapointing experience. Food was fabulous as always as we have eaten here many times in the 10 years we have lived here. The waiter however was on loud speaker on his phone to his family for the entire duration from when we entered the restaurant until when we left, approx 1 hour. There was no music so we heard the whole conversation on both sides throughout our whole meal. He also presented me with a bill which I thought was too high so he added it up again and got it to £2.75 less. This experience ruined our meal. Will think before we go again

Really not a very good Indian. The chutneys and popadoms were not fresh and had a weird gross skin on them. The lamb was really tough. The dal was just water, there were no lentils. Generally had no flavour in any dishes. Really disappointed.
