(Translated by Google) The **Rocca dei Rettori**, also known as **Castello di Benevento** or **Castello di Manfredi**, is a castle located in the city of Benevento. It was founded on the site of a previous fortified Lombard palace, built by Duke **Arechi II** starting from **871** in the place called "Piano di Corte". The palace survived even after the end of the Duchy of Benevento, hosting several popes over time, the last of which was **Pope Gregory X** in **1272**, and was later destroyed. In **1321** Pope **John XII of Avignon** commissioned the papal rector of the city, **Guglielmo de Balaeto**, with the construction of a fortified seat for the "Rectors", which was to be built near the Benedictine monastery female of **Santa Maria di Porta Somma**, transferring the nuns to the monastery of **San Pietro**. The fortress was completed towards the end of **1338** under the pontificate of **Pope Benedict XII**. The project included a castrum and a palatium, enclosed by walls protected by moats, crossed by three drawbridges. The construction incorporated the eastern gate of the city, which was rebuilt a little further on. The construction of two towers and a roof terrace was planned, which were however replaced by a building intended for storage. Starting from **1586** the fortress was progressively transformed into a prison, which remained active until **1865**. Part of the building was rebuilt in the **18th century**, following the destruction caused by the earthquake of **1702**. Of the ancient castle, only the central keep is currently preserved, undergoing restoration work between **1959** and **1960**, which led to the discovery of the ancient city gate, in correspondence with the entrance hall of the keep , and the remains of a Roman funerary monument. The building houses the historical section of the **Museo del Sannio** with material pertinent to the history of the city and the Sannio region and the documentation of the art and popular traditions of the province. The gardens that flank the castle host a lapidary, dedicated to the milestones of the Via Traiana, which also houses various Roman architectural fragments, some of which were found in Largo Feoli. edited by Chiara Maria Pontillo.

(Translated by Google) Historic fortress and symbol of the city of Benevento. Excellent welcome from the pro loco volunteers who gave us the guided tour. Interiors renovated in a modern style and used for office use, so nothing exceptional, except for some underground rooms still in natural stone. The castle was destroyed by bombing several times and rebuilt. Inside, as we were in the Christmas period, we visited the Christmas markets and the rooms with the nativity scene exhibition. I would have given 5 stars if the interiors had been renovated in a style more suited to the historical period of the Rocca. However, it is also worth visiting for the courtyard with garden in front, with a panoramic view of the Libertà district. Furthermore, the Rocca is directly connected to the beautiful Villa Comunale with an adjoining lake. So a beautiful and pleasant walk.

The Museum of Sannio, located in Benevento, is a historical treasure that offers visitors a deep dive into the history and architecture of the region. Housed in the cloister of the Chiesa di Santa Sofia, this museum is divided into four sections and showcases over 500 artifacts dating from the Samnites to the 20th Century.
World class cloister, restored very well. Could spend hours examining and interpreting the images on the capitals. Fascinating museum, not to be missed is the really intriguing Gnathia ware from Apulia. Somewhat underplayed by the curators, I felt. Superb pair of minimalist pelicans in photo attache and what in the middle of them???

(Translated by Google) The first nucleus of the collection dates back to 1873 and was first placed inside the Rocca dei Rettori, currently home to the Historical Section. In the 1930s the provincial administration purchased the Abbey of Hagia Sophia, transforming it into a provincial museum, reorganizing and expanding the exhibition in the following decades. The renovation of part of the rooms in the north wing of the museum dates back to the end of the 1990s, and subsequently the collections were also housed in a wing of the historic Palazzo Casiello. 2014 saw the opening of the Infopoint and the Bookshop with the adjoining “Sculptures and Sarcophagi” section on Piazza Matteotti. The museum collection is one of the most varied, and represents an example of traditional territorial museumisation, that is, a collection that has been built up over time, through a series of donations, purchases and assignments from all over the territory. The museum collects historical evidence starting from the Samnite and Roman periods, passing through the Lombard age, then ranging from the 15th to the 19th century, up to works by the most important national artists of the 20th century. The over 50,000 finds cover a broad chronological span from prehistory to the present day, thanks to which it is possible to experience the construction of taste and awareness of cultural heritage over the centuries. The route develops on the two floors of the monumental complex of Santa Sofia and in some rooms of the historic Palazzo Casiello, according to a chronological sequence. The 12th century Romanesque Cloister belongs to the museum core and, together with the church of Santa Sofia, has been part of the UNESCO serial site "Longobards in Italy: places of power" since 2011. The exhibition also includes the Roman sculptures and sarcophagi section, located inside the Infopoint/Bookshop in Piazza Matteotti. The heritage of the Sannio Museum is completed by the Egyptian Section, located at the Arcos Museum, and the Sant'Ilario Complex in Port'Aurea, both of which can be visited with a single integrated ticket of 6 euros, reduced 4. NEGATIVE NOTE: you cannot pay for entry by credit card, which is absurd for a museum. For the third consecutive year, despite having reported this antics every year, I had to withdraw cash to pay.

(Translated by Google) Of an imposing structure, Palazzo Paolo V stands along Corso Garibaldi in Benevento. Its 16th century architecture is not particularly worthy of mention compared to others in the city but the history of its functions has determined its importance as one of the most well-known and important buildings in the city. Seat of the Municipal Administrations, it has been the subject of various restoration interventions but, as often happens in these cases, these only concern the structural interventions and, only marginally, the functional ones. A bar with service inside the room and in the courtyard itself, which was covered by a translucent roof with an iron truss structure, found a natural location in its internal courtyard. In the entrance hall there are side service rooms and others intended for exhibition spaces. The upper floors, although suitable for public use, have remained unused to date despite the continuous demand for spaces for collective functions.

We had one of our best meals so far on this trip to Italy at this little place. The owner Alphonso is a gem of a person, a truly great host. The place specializes in authentic local cuisine, made from locally sourced ingredients. We started with the scialapopolo antipasto. I had the linguine with salted fish while my wife had pasta with chickpeas; a local favorite that was not not on the menu. Alphonso’s wife was kind enough to make it for my wife as a special request. The second plate of grilled pork loin was perfection. The meat was tender and full of flavor. Topped the meal off with a slice of home made baba and a shot of expresso. Will definitely be coming back when we visit next. Well worth the detour if you are driving through the area.

My wife and I visited Locanda SCIALAPOPOLO on a Saturday night in mid-October 2019. Two hungry Americans anxiously waiting for resturants to open at 8:00 PM we chose this venue due to its proximity to our B&B and the online reviews. We couldn't have been more fortunate in our selection! Entering the restaurant we were among the first diners seated. Our server, Antonella, took special attention to make sure we understood the menu even though we didn't speak Italian. She brought us uncooked pasta, showed us pictures and was incredibly patient as we made our choices. The food, wine and beer (try the local brew) did not disappoint! The 4th generation owner came by our table and was very hospitable. He didn’t speak English; we didn’t speak much Italian, but it didn’t matter. We were there during Christmas holidays and we ate traditional Christmas dishes from the region, as recommended by the waiter. Felt like a special meal. Delicious food, great atmosphere, wonderful service. The owner treated us superbly, he went out of his way to make us feel comfortable (Americans). We will be returning.

They also accept credit cards, so there's no need to worry about bringing cash.
Beautiful lunch! Home-made pasta with a LOT more than factory made pasta flavor. Spices were a wonderful addition after time in Naples (very bland food). Lots of mafia movie ambiance on the walls. Quite a pleasant visit

(Translated by Google) We ate very well. The appetizers were so plentiful that some couldn't finish the starters. The staff is courteous and accommodated us in everything. They were also available and prepared for gluten free. (Original) Abbiamo mangiato molto bene.

La Pampanini 1956 is an extraordinary establishment that can only be described as a masterpiece. With its stunning ambiance, courteous and skilled staff, promotion of local products, and exceptional pizza, it is a must-visit destination. Although we can only visit occasionally, it is mandatory to stop here for a meal. The pizzas are excellent, especially the one with mortadella and pistachio.

(Translated by Google) A young craftsman is working hard to bake pizza in a large kiln. Definitely recommend this restaurant. Janara pizza is delicious.

Excellent pizza and starters, kind but slow service, noisy (on Saturday night), located in the historic center, good value for money
