The Amoreira Aqueduct, also known as the Aqueduto da Amoreira, is a remarkable piece of hydraulic architecture in Elvas, Portugal. Stretching over 8 kilometers from the outskirts of the city, this World Heritage Site was completed in 1622 after more than 120 years of construction. Designed by Francisco de Arruda, it features impressive cylindrical buttresses and towering arches reaching up to 30 meters in height.
Es un sitio sorprendente, se puede estacionar con autocaravana, el pueblo es ideal para pasear y la gente muy amable. Si vas a Lisboa merece la pena descansar aquí de camino y visitar el pueblo. (Translated by Google) It is a surprising place, you can park with a motorhome, the town is ideal for walking and the people are very friendly. If you go to Lisbon it is worth resting here on the way and visiting the town.

Disappointing first impression cause middle part where you see first is replastered and lost its original surface. But go up to the hill and see the original part. Large parking area. Quiet town. Can take good photos.

A beautifully imposing structure in the heart of town. They are currently doing maintenance on it and re-plastering it in sections, but there isn’t any scaffolding or anything obstructing the view. There is a lot of parking right next to the aqueduct. It’s really easy to pull over and get some great pics without having to walk much. We arrived at around 3pm and there were only a few other cars in the massive parking lot. About a four minute drive from the fort as well, really easy to see both quickly.

Amazing architectural stop along the way to the town of Elvas. There is a car park right across the street and a park on either side of Aqueducts. During our visit it was being restored and conserved.

Fortress

Points of Interest & Landmarks
The Forte de Nossa Senhora da Graça is an 18th-century pentagonal fortress situated on a hill, which offers panoramic views of Elvas and even Badajoz in Spain. The fort has been restored, and many parts have been refurbished to welcome visitors into most areas. It contains historical exhibits such as wall paintings and furniture that transport visitors back to the early/mid-20th century and before. Entry is free, making it a worthwhile destination for tourists visiting Elvas.
Beautiful fort, only about a 4-5 minute drive from the aqueduct parking. We arrived early in the afternoon on a Saturday and there was only a few other people there. Interesting history and well worth the time it takes to visit.
Brisippus — Google review
The Forte da Graça, built in the second half of the 18th century by the Count of Lippe, is located on Monte da Graça, one of the highest points in the region and a place of great strategic importance, which allowed the completion of the defensive circuit of Elvas . Affiliated with the Dutch method of fortification, the building complex is formally divided into two parts: the exterior works and the main body, consisting of a magisterial enclosure and a central stronghold. Protected by the remaining lines of defense, the central stronghold consisted of an octagonal tower, with vaulted floors, where there was a chapel on the ground floor, a cistern in the underground space and the Governor's House on the upper floors. After a period of abandonment, Forte da Graça, along with the other fortified structures in Elvas, was classified as a UNESCO world heritage site in 2012, undergoing restoration works.
Alexandre Alves — Google review
A very interesting fort to visit in Portugal -- probably one of the better ones in the country in terms of size, complexity, and recent usage. Be careful to avoid the spots of rat and bird droppings when exploring the underground tunnels (they're very visible but somehow are always in the middle of the hallways) to avoid stirring up any potential hazardous dust. The old housings for the officers at the corners of the fort are still in relatively good shape / not completely in disrepair, and make for some interesting exploring of nooks and crannies if you're willing to spend just a few more minutes at the fort. Lots to explore here overall and getting lost in the central building and imagining what it must have been like to live and defend the fort during the wars with Spanish armies.
Terence Chan — Google review
Huge fort, lots of area to cover. Machine with cold drinks available in the entrance. View from the governor's house is astonishing.
Mathias Veenman — Google review
We walked up the hill from old Elvas, a 45 minutes scenic walk. It started to rain and became vey cloudy, which ruined the sight on Elvas. So we drove back next morning for the pictures. The fort is impressive, difficult to find the route for visiting.

Fascinating and maze-like fort with many levels and endless rooms and galleries. Lots of interesting architectural features and preserved military cartoons from the 1960s painted on the walls. Judging by photos it was in quite a state before being restored, it's in a very good condition now.

This is a spectacular Forte. We spent 2 hours and could have used 3. Make sure you walk the outer wall
Brett Elliott — Google review
It was very nice to see through all the various aspects of the Forte. In the main body was like a maze, easy to get lost, while nice & cool walking around the tunnels
russell nevey — Google review
A huge, well preserved, fortress that will surely entertain you most if you're curious about walking down the whole wall and exploring every bit. The view is nothing but gorgeous specially up at the governor's house. I didn't see it with a guide, but if they were available I'd choose that since the fortress is just too huge and surely filled with history that you can't grasp by just reading the signs which in my opinion were lacking some information.
Filipe Picoito Jorge — Google review
I came to this fort over 10 years ago and it was almost an abandoned landmark. Now it has been restored and many of its parts refurbished in order to welcome visitors in most areas. It was a beautiful viewpoint over Elvas and even Badajoz in Spain. There are a number of historical details like wall paintings and furniture that give a historical travel back to the early / mid-20th century, and even before that. Entry is free so definitely worth a visit if you stop at Elvas.

(Translated by Google) There was only one solo exhibition. For a museum that was created to showcase a private collection of a great and admirable collector of contemporary art, it is, in my humble opinion, very limiting. Especially for those who are passing through and cannot follow the year's program. This is made worse by the lack of access to this program, if... Furthermore, when the one-person exhibition on display is based on eclectic installations, it almost becomes unpleasant to see so many installations with disparate content and content, all in a row. If it were a commercial gallery I would understand, but in a museum? And what's more, with a very limited exhibition space in rooms, the type of installations are small, not allowing a correct reading of them. How many times have I tried to move away to see the works in full and been unable to do so? Nothing against the artist but very much against the conditions of the space where they were. In the future, there will be common sense on the part of the curators to understand whether the places where they intend to exhibit honor the work and the artist. Good will and great desire should not override the reality of what you have.

The wine selection and helpful staff make this place great, but reservations are recommended to ensure you get a table.
Place is simply fantastic!! Stuff is polite and nice, food is local and tastes so good, and very cheap also (compared to any capital city). I’d give this place 6 stars. Sorry I took pics of the snacks only. Come, you won’t regret!

Gorgeous food and wine! We arrived just as it opened so were asked to wait at the bar while they organised a table, but excellent service. Food was fantastic (especially the lamb). Lovely atmosphere, and obviously very popular. Note, like all restaurants we found in Portugal, the bread/paté etc on the table is charged extra.

It’s a lovely place with nice decorations and a lot of wines. The owners are very hospitable. It’s always full, better to reserve a table before going . The meat was really in high quality. We will come back for sure.

Second time coming to the restaurant. This time the experience wasn't so good regarding the food. We had squids "à alentejana" (which were divine), but the pork cheeks were too chewy for that specific piece of meat. The French fries and the migas were perfect. The house red wine was ok, but the desserts sure need an improvement. The cheese mousse was did not have any peaks (a lot of whites in the bottom of the glass) and the sericaia was too chewy on the outside for our taste. However, we highly recommend this place.
Tomás Alves — Google review
Let's start with the good things... The kitchen isn't closed in the afternoons, the service is nice and dishes are well served for a very reasonable price. However, we had to wait one hour to get our main courses, meat was overcooked and the "appetizers" served at your arrival are billed even if you don't touch them. Do not hesitate to mention it. Overall a normal experience for a reasonable price hence the 3 stars

El Cristo is a remarkable dining establishment that holds fond memories for many. It has been serving excellent food since childhood, and patrons continue to frequent it when in Elvas or passing through the Caia border. The seafood and fish offerings are consistently incredible and incredibly fresh. Dining at El Cristo is always a delightful experience, thanks to its attentive staff who prioritize customer satisfaction. The cuisine represents classical Portuguese dishes but also offers unique options beyond the usual vegetarian, meat, or fish choices.
Always a brilliant time, always busy. Been to this one and the opening night in Vilamoura too, consistently amazing, fresh food and quality service!!!

If you are looking for El Cristo the one that was amazing this is not it. Service is really, really bad, basic attention and hospitality protocol totally ignored. Acontece restaurant offers an exceptional dining experience that comes highly recommended. The staff is incredibly friendly and attentive, with both the waiter and owner fluent in English. Everyone, I repeat, everyone is very friendly, helpful, and sweet! My wife and me had an unforgettable experience! We will definitely come back soon!

Good restaurant, attentive staff and tasty food. Be ready they put a plate with bread and other stuff without specifying the price - you'll think it's a compliment from the restaurant, but no, it will be on your bill for €5.80 - an unpleasant surprise. Helpful service, guys are doing their best. Overall the impression is good.

We were recommended a few places for dinner but I'm very happy that we have picked this one. The service was great and super friendly. We had the tuna, which was prepared by the chef at our table and the coconut shrimps. The dishes were fantastic. The flavour was interesting but worked well in this combination. The cheesecake was good, too. I would definitely go there again when in town. Only the vegetarian options are limited and I'm not sure about the vegetarian dish with shrimps. But maybe it's made of tofu... However, as a vegetarian its very challenging to find good food in interior Alentejo.

Food - nothing special for the money. There were a few moments which I did not really like. If you are a tourist - be careful. But I must admit that the administrator does his job really great ;) the owner should treat this person as a treasure for this restaurant

A must stop in Elvas. Excellent service, friendly staff, and fantastic fresh food. I have a food allergy, and there was a mistake with one of the appetizers that I ordered. The chef personally came out and reassured me that he would make a completely new plate and to leave the mistake on the table until he brought out the new one so that I would feel secure eating the dish. This experience in itself deserves a 15/10. I will happily return again. Bravo to the team at Acontece

We randomly passed by Elvas on our roadtrip at the end of August 2022. At first we wanted to have lunch at another restaurant which was more Portuguese but it was so full. It turned out that the experience was really beyond out expectation. We were not very familiar with the dishes on the menu so we asked the waiter for help and he recommended two tuna dishes (tuna with artichoke and tuna with fruits) as those were signature dishes of the restaurant (we even joked then that the restaurant might have ordered lots of tuna today, hence the advice🤣) however in the end I had to say these tuna dishes were the best tuna dishes that I had ever had, given that I'm always a very big fan of sushi and fish tartar. For desserts we picked short mango and milles-feuilles and both were absolutely amazing. 5 stars to all the 4 dishes we ordered (and even to the salad as a side dish). Highly recommended.

Fantastic! The best dinning experience my wife and I have had in a long time. I highly recommend this restaurant because it is a great place all around. The staff are exceptionally nice and give you their best. Our waiter and the owner spoke fluent English and were a pleasure to talk with. The sirloin steak was delicious and it is served with a very hot stone so you can cook it to your liking. The hot stone is an exceptional touch that made the experience even more fun. The prices were very reasonable considering the quality of the food (not quantity). Our entire meal was €64 including drinks and desert. For dessert we had the chocolate cake and ice cream and the cream cake. Both were amazing. If we are ever in the area again we will certainly stop for dinner.

Good food & service. Only issue was the bread being brought without being requested. This is a €5 item. We asked for it to be taken away, which they did - but we still had to ask for it to be taken off the bill at the end. This is a good restaurant, there's no need for this sort of trick.

Restaurante O Lagar in Elvas is a popular dining spot with a spacious and tidy refectory room, offering a pleasant and welcoming atmosphere. The restaurant serves delicious Portuguese cuisine, including grilled meat dishes with amazing flavors. While the food may take some time to be served, the wait is worth it according to many visitors. The portions are generous, making it advisable to share dishes or book a table in advance as the restaurant tends to get full quickly.
Very good food!. Very nice atmosphere! I should probably mention that it took over an hour for food to come out of the kitchen. Fortunately I was with good company so it was worth the wait. I'm still giving 5 stars because I think the wait was probably an anomaly.

What a terrible experience trying out the food of the area. Called that we find that the soup we eat is different from other tables. Because we have no eggs in the soup and there is no flavor in the soup. and when we pay The price of bread on the bill was paid but we didn't eat it. And finally, when we ask for a tax number, they can't tell us, but we begged 2-3 times, so they gave me the number. A very bad experience

Each visit in Elvas we try a new restaurant. Friday 2nd September was time to try O Lagar. The staff are pleasant, helpful and welcoming. Behind those wide doors is a large refectory room with plenty of space between tables, a bar on one side and a view of the busy kitchen at the back. It's all very tidy and clean and the place got full pretty quickly, for good reasons. The service is very efficient, though you have to wait a little for your meal but we find it always a good sign: it's cooking as it should be, with pride and quality. The usual couvert of little plastic containers of paté, cream cheese and butter never impress us and I would say this should not be presented in this establishment where the rest of the food is home-made cooking. However, we love bread and we definitely tried their delicious buns while waiting for a Lombo de Porco com Batadas Padeiro (Slices of pork loin with roasted potato wedges, rice and gravy) and a Bife de Vitela à Lagar (Beef steak "O Lagar" style, rice and chips) served with a generous salad side dish of crunchy lettuce, tomatoes and sliced onions. Both main dishes were well prepared and very tasty. The beef really stole the limelight. Served medium rare to perfection, the O Lagar style revealed itself to be 2 steak slices between which there was melted cheese and bacon, yummy! The sauce, equally tasty, was probably madeira wine and mushroom based but we never enquired, there was no need. These main dishes are definitely of good proportion and a starter should not be necessary unless you intend to take left- overs with you. We took a litre jar of their red house wine at room temperature which was perfectly enjoyable for 6.50 euros for the price. One of us gave in to a desert of Cericaia (traditional Alentejan cake usually served with the local confit plum in its sirup and called Ameixa d'Elvas). The waiter brought 2 sets of cutlery and I could not resist trying it. We live in Alentejo and have tried many versions of this pudding, the one at O Lagar has to be one of the best we've had so far. As a result I had to order my own portion! It all went down a treat. Ended up with 2 expressos, as you do and the bill came to a reasonable 39.80 euros. A place worth returning to, to impress visitors with some good Portuguese regional cooking. Thank you.

(Translated by Google) The portions are huge, definitely too big for us (we eat normally and can eat a lot) and it's actually a shame about the rest. If you have a starter (Alentejo soup was very good, but a little low in salt and also too big). Share two, share the main course and share a dessert, and you're already stuffed. The waiters were nice and attentive, the service was quick and the atmosphere was good. Overall the food was tasty. 3.5-4 out of 5 stars. Seen in the pictures: Alentejo soup, pork tenderloin, mixed kebab (skewer/shish kebab).

Beautiful place. Great food, great staff. Good for families, but also for more private meal 'a deux'. Recommended!

Went overzealous on the restrictions more than the government. I will never forget being turned down end of December 2021 despite having official negative tests (but no injections certificate). This place does not deserve to be in the Michelin guide vert.

Typical Portuguese food. Don't miss it if you go to Elves. The portions are enough for two persons. Very good place and very friendly staff. You should try the "migas"

I did not know what to expect at this restaurant, but it was great. The food was very good, we all had grilled (charcoal) meat dishes. The flavor was amazing! There was so much food we could have shared the dishes. Highly recommend.

Mercato is a fabulous eatery that serves delicious cuisine, offering an abundance of tapas prepared with exceptionally fresh and top-notch ingredients. The impeccable service staff exhibit friendly and attentive manners, providing valuable guidance and recommendations. This establishment comes highly recommended due to its delectable food choices and extensive drinks menu. It is a place where one can repeatedly visit without hesitation. Additionally, Mercato offers the convenience of takeout services, allowing customers to order their meals in advance for pick-up later on.
My group of friends were having some late dinner and rolled in to Mercato right before closing time. We were happily surprised that they extended their hours for us to dine-in. We had an amazing, filling meal with great service. We appreciated the warm hospitality from everyone!
