The Mashiko Museum of Ceramic Art, also known as Ceramic Art Messe Mashiko, is a beautiful museum located in picturesque leafy grounds. The museum features an impressive array of modern and traditional pottery from various eras. Visitors can witness the art of pottery-making up close with the wood kilns on display. Additionally, there is a lovely café that offers visitors a chance to relax and enjoy their surroundings while appreciating the beauty of this compact museum.
a day trip from Nikko to the ceramic town of Mashiko, visited the ceramic museum near the site of the former residence of Shoji Hamada. Many shops along the street nearby sells a great variety of ceramic wares handcrafted using clays from the area. An eye-opening trip on pottery making in Japan!

Mashiko Museum of Ceramic Art / Ceramic Art Messe Mashiko 益子陶芸美術館/陶芸メッセ・益子 — free parking, ¥600 entrance ticket (I don’t recommend going here.) You can’t take photos and there aren’t many things to see at all. Not worth the ¥600 entrance fee. Waste of time. This is from someone who loves going to pottery towns in Japan. There aren’t ceramics here at all just little photos. If you want to save money and see ceramics go to nearby Yamani Otsuka やまに大塚 (there are so many Mashiko-ware ceramics here and also a gallery showcasing Mashikoyaki

Visited twice during the month of November. Mashiko is a Japanese Mecca of pottery and is well worth the visit to anyone who loves pottery. You can learn a lot by the visit, see many potters, kilns, buy handmade pottery etc. Highly recommend to everybody. It’s really great.

A small museum dedicated to ceramic works. Modern and pleasant. Hamada et al. works including Bernard Leach ceramics. Second floor is about the history of Mashiko ceramics. You can also visit next door buildings including Hamada original residence. Pleasant coffee shop across the ticket office where you can select your favourite Mashiko cup and have coffee. Attached is a small shop. Ceramic dishes by local artists selling there could be a bargain.

First we appreciate, then we try to understand. From that moment on, as foreigners we always wonder if our understanding is correct or not. When visiting Shoji Hamada's house, we learn with less doubts. Being in contact with his house and environment is similar to reading a book about his life and work.

If you are interested in pottery at all this is a pilgrimage you have to make. Shoji Hamada was a world renowned potter who influenced the Mingei folk art movement and later was declared a national treasure. Here you can see the studio, and kick wheel Hamada used as well as the actual kiln. While here we met one of the care takers who's father worked along-side Hamada who remembers them actually firing up the kiln! The entire town of Mashiko is a delight and not to missed.

I expressed my daily gratitude to Eleven-faced Kannon Bodhisattva in the main hall, and visited again behind the main road. We visited during a snowy day. Yoshimura san was worried that the green house might collapse so we couldn’t pick strawberries today. But they let us taste different kinds of strawberries and took pictures in the greenhouse. The strawberries they sell at the store were very cheap for the quality! Located to the side of the station gate, this tourist information centre has a few bikes for rent including 1 electric one. I hired one for 1/2 day for 700 yen. These are an excellent way to get around Mashiko town, but if you're buying pottery perhaps a small backpack is better than a bag in the bike's front basket. The man inside speaks quite good English given that you're in a country area. They may store your suitcase if you hire a bike and the suitcase won't fit in the station lockers (most med-large western suitcases will NOT fit in the available lockers at Mashiko station).
