Mae Hong Son

Mae Hong Son is a remote, mountainous province in northern Thailand, bordering Myanmar (Burma). Though sparsely populated, it's ethnically diverse and home to hill tribes such as the Shan and Hmong. The capital, also called Mae Hong Son, is a gateway to the region's hills. It's overlooked by Wat Phrathat Doi Kongmu, a Burmese-style monastery with 2 ornate white chedis (stupas) built in the 19th century.

Wat Phrathat Doi Kongmu is a Burmese-style temple situated on a hill in Mae Hong Son. It was built in 1860 and features two white-golden spired stupa domes and an ornate hall. The temple compound, also known as Wat Plai Doi, houses two Shan chedi that contain the remains of monks from Myanmar's Shan State.
Beautiful place in the early morning with fogs all around the mountain. You can have a bird view of Mae Hong Son, while enjoy a free hot herbal tea at the balcony.

A must visit when you're in Mae Hong Son. Spectacular view. Do come before sunset and head up to the standing Buddha which located uphill. Behind the small temple, that's the best sunset viewing point. Do ring the bell next to the rider memorial as a sign of respect to the fallen rider

Just beautiful here now. 5 pm on Thursday and not crowded. Fantastic views of Mae Hong Son and surrounding mountains. Don't miss it.

Entry: For free Definitely worth checking out! My recommendation is go there in the early morning around 6 am and watch the sunrise! Absolutely incredible! Especially if you go around 6 am then you'll be alone up there without the Crowds! Absolutely incredible!

Great place to visit. Walking up to the temple is a good exercise about half an hour. The cafe is the best location to take panorama view. This place is a Must place to visit when you are in Mae Hong Son.

I would go to this place in the morning. See the mist lift from the views. Good place for coffee and to slowly wake up in a peaceful place. Walk around see the temples and the sights. Really nice quiet place and not so many tourists.

Not a bad place to stop by. View is really nice! Though it was abit hazy. We reached about 5 so it looks empty and going to close. Still nice to take pictures though! If you dont have a vehicle, standby for a walk up slope to reach the place. Information wise, quite little but interesting. Would recommend if you're around the area and looking for something to do and have a vehicle.

One of the tourist attractions in this town. You can walk up a long flight of steps or ride a motorbike / drive a car up here. There is a coffee stall and toilets here. There is also a nice view of the city landscape. No entrance fee required. Recommend to visit early morning about 6am as you will get to see a mist all around :)

This is a beautiful temple with views over Mae Hong Song and lots of references to the number of bends and MHS Loop memorabilia to buy at a reasonable price from friendly vendors. It was busy with a mix of tourists, monks and lay people. Hearing the chanting was very soothing and interesting. There were monks of all ages and it was interesting to see the child monks sitting in front of the alter, completely engaged in the ceremony but with their brand new mobile phones on the floor in front of their ochre robes. The highest temple (the small one up steep steps away from the main white one) has a memorial for fallen bikers who loved the MHS Loop which is nice. It was created by GT Riders.

I would give this place a 2 thumbs up fo both sunrise and sunset. No admission fees, no parking fees, no worries. My sympathies if you have to climb the stairs. Hopefully you rented a bike and find the road that goes up the back side of the hill and will deliver you in less than 5 minutes. If you visit early it will probably be hazy, maybe afternoon is best for clear blue shys, you be the judge! 😊

Beautiful temples with huge towers, giant statues. In addition, you have to walk several hundred steps to get to this place. From here you can see the whole city at night sparkling with lights, like small stars right below the ground. What a spectacular view not to be missed when coming to Mae hong son.
Cao Thao — Google review
Really great I was there for sunset Theres two chedis and a great view of mae hong son. Then go abit further up to the giant standing Buddha to see the sun set behind the mountains. Was a filtered water tap too There is a cafe but i missed it, closes around sunset time Many locals walk up and down for exercise. Im sure sunrise is also awesome as the sun will rise over the town. Lmk Have fun

Loved this place at 6am. Didn't get to see sunrise, but the morning must was amazing. You can drive up or walk up the stairs or walk up the hill. A nice coffee shop at the top. Worth a visit, definitely.

Great experience watching the sunrise and foggy surroundings. At this time of year it's fine to arrive at 6:30 AM so you don't spend half an hour waiting in the dark.

This temple is considered an essential sanctuary of Mae Hong Son, and the highlights are the two lavishly decorated pagodas. The large pagoda, brought from Myanmar, was built by "Jong Tong Su" in 1860 and contained the relics of Phra Mokkhalana, the chief disciple of the Lord Buddha. The small pagoda was built in 1874 by Phraya Singhanatracha, the first governor of Mae Hong Son. From Wat Phrathat Doi Kong Mu hilltop, you are treated to an exceptional aerial view of the city and surrounding mountains and valleys.

Our visit to see the great tomb of Kruba MaiHung and check out some of the contributions we all did in the past to bring comfort to visitor. Beautiful scenery from the top of the hill looking down at the city.

An absolute must visit if you’re at Mae Hong Son! Sitting atop of probably the highest point in the city- you can have an overview of the entire town and even the runway of their airport. Superb spot for sunset- just walk further in the road (near a cafe) and you’ll have a great view of the sun setting among the mountains. The entire area felt very peaceful and tranquil. Ohm.

Ban Rak Thai is a charming Yunnanese village located near the Burma border, known for its picturesque lake and tea plantations. The village features ornate tea houses and noodle restaurants where visitors can taste local delicacies. It's advisable to book accommodations in advance as they tend to fill up quickly. For a memorable experience, tourists should schedule a boat ride from Lee Wine Rak Coffee Shop on the lakefront before sunrise.
Absolutely stunning lake near the Burma boarder. We got there at 6am before sunrise and I highly recommend it. We wanted to stay in town but everything we looked at was sold out online so probably best to book in advance. If you can you should schedule the boat ride (just at the counter of the lee wine rak coffee shop right on the lake) the night before it’s about 400 baht for a 30/40 min ride. The first one leaves at 630 am but I think the best one would be the one at 710 right at sunrise. It’s magical and being able to sip your coffee at sunrise watching the boats through the steam is incredible.

It's a 5 plus hour drive from Chiang Mai so if you do decide to come up here spend a night or two. I just took a walk around the lake after dinner and the views are amazing plus the weather is very cool for thailand.

Its a small village near the Burma border. The lake in the middle makes it more beautiful. The drive from Chiang main is 5 hours so you need to stay here to rest because there are many curves on the way here. The tea shops here serve tea which taste fantastic. The night view of the market and lake is stunning. You can go boating as well in the lake but you need to book in advance for early morning.

Quaint little Chinese village on a small lake, a bit touristy, but a nice windy drive on a motorbike with lots of twisties. Elevation about 1,800m, so very cool. Get there early as the place is relatively small and traffic will pile up. If you want to stay the night, best book ahead. Excellent fresh tea houses surround the lake.

Views were amazing. 20% off the restaurant and shop when staying in the hotel. Slow cooked pork and buns were delicious. Hotel room wasn't in great condition but it was clean enough with a comfy bed and air con. You are mainly paying for the location though which is quite stunning.

A very beautiful place, in the mountains it is cool at night. The whole village looks like a Chinese drama set. Here you can buy very good tea. quite difficult to reach by public transport. Many kilometers of serpentine, please do not have lunch before the trip.

First impression: wow great…. And also second impression is Wow!! if you just enjoy the lake and the mountains in back, the reflection of the clouds in the water. Just great. And a downside for my feeling: look over the lake and see a bunch of villas/ hotel rooms being build. And I don’t think these will be Chinese styled buildings. Don’t get me wrong it’s their place and they should do whatever they wanna do. I also understand that people wanna monetize this surrounding. It’s just I had this image in my head after seeing pictures on the internet that I had certain expectations. Personally I expected to see a lot of traditional Chinese styled buildings. I was just wrong so that’s my thing. Also In my opinion the prices for food are very very reasonable.

A small Yunnanese village situated in hidden small town area of Thailand. Distance wise, the place is about 40km from Mae Hong Son town or 250km from Chiang Mai. it is also very close to the Burma border (less than 1km).

-I visited in beginning of January, which fell on New Year’s Day. I think it’s was a very beautiful place whether at night or during the day. Because it’s a village in the middle of the valley and there have a reservoir in the middle of the village and it’s decorated in a Chinese style. In the morning we will see fog floating on the reservoir, it’s a very beautiful picture. And there also have a boat trip and sipping tea in the reservoir. If you go, you must definitely try and take a picture there because it’s very beautiful. And another thing that I would like to recommend that is you have to go eat Thai BBQ (Moo-gata), it’s a very good feeling. Eating Thai BBQ in the cool weather is the best. Actually, it’s cool all year round, you can go during any month. But I went on a holiday and there might be a little more people. If you haven’t reserved the room, it’s quite hard to find.

This can really be one of Thailand's most unique places ever. Rich in history, strong in tradition and with everlasting contributions. You are coming here not just for the tea, nor the Yunnan food. You are coming here to feel the difference in lifestyle, something about 99% of Thailand doesn't offer.
Shokamoka — Google review
I haven’t done my research before so I thought I was heading to a small authentic village. It wasn’t as expected since this is a tourist resort and the surroundings of the lake is made for tourism. However, there’s a pleasant and calm atmosphere. You can do tea tasting, the oolong with ginseng is particularly good.
Amelie Salvadori — Google review
This place is definitely worth a detour. I'm really amazed that they managed to turn such a small pond/lake into a tourist attraction and build so many resorts there. It's possible to walk all the way round the pond/lake in a couple of hours. The best time on the lake is definitely as the sun rises and the mists form above it. Head to Lee Wine Resort, pay a small fee and you can go in and take some amazing shots from there.

It’s come from chinese exile long time ago, but nowadays they already become Thai in nationality. Good ambience and they have the best tea! You can also find chinese drugs here and of course cheaper than the town.

The place with amazing views. Most beautiful villages in Thai. Just go to the above shops to get the full view of the villages. Worth the long ride to here.
Quzaifah Shaharuddin — Google review
This is a village built by KMT soldiers when China was established in 1949. So the Thai people here are also able to speak Mandarin Chinese well. This place has beautiful scenery day and night. The accommodation here is quite expensive especially at the famous “Lee Wine resort”. On the opposite side of the lake from “Lee Wine” however , prices are cheaper. Most of the tourists here are local thai. Few accommodation here put up on hotel websites. You can find their contact number (add them via LINE app) or Facebook on google maps. The main activity to do here is to hire a boat ride to the middle of the lake to see the scenery and you might get to see the “mist above the water” during cold temperatures such as winter (December) and rainy (September) seasons in Thailand. You can also visit the tea plantation at Lee Wine resort (20 THB) You can also rent Chinese costumes to take photos (100 THB per hour) There are also electric PMD bikes for rent at 100 THB per hour. To get here, you can take a yellow songtheow from Mae Hong Son town at 12pm.

Pang Oung is a stunning high-terrain lake surrounded by lush gardens and fruit trees, offering picturesque walking paths and bamboo rafting. It's often referred to as the "Switzerland of Mae Hong Son" due to its serene mountain setting with cool temperatures, pine forests, and a beautiful lake. The area also features a campground near the reservoir where visitors can rent tents for a night in nature.
If you travel to Mae Hong Son in the winter, visiting this place is a must! Make sure to arrive as early as 6 am for the spectacular view during rafting. The place is pretty safe, clean, and not too touristy. The staff is well trained and polite. There is a designated camp ground if you're into camping. Highly recommended place to visit especially in the early morning during winter!

Amazing place! Very localised and good, quiet atmosphere. Not a very touristy place, therefore, no queue. Lots of fish in the lake. A pleasant raft ride very close to nature. Would love to stay overnight at the area at some point if get the chance.

The views were amazing! It was fun playing and being guided by the dogs in the area. The geese on the lake looked magical. I wished I tried riding the bamboo boat. But still, I would be really happy to come back!
Jofer Asilum — Google review
Beautiful place, very quiet. Nice to chill. It consists of a short street full of honestays and restaurants/food stands with a little lake at the end. Its very picturesque and the bamboo boat rides are very atmospheric. They take 2 people and cost 150 bhat (in Dec 23). There's a national park where you can walk, maybe camp (not sure). You need to pay to get in. (We didn't go in as we had already done a fair bit of nature trails). Not much to do, rather touristic, but worth a visit.

I didn't go inside the camping site but I already loved the place. The fresh air. The goose. The lake. The trees. The silence. Love this place the most in Mae Hong Son.

Phenomenal views and vibes but it was a tough trip and I think it’s the most nauseous road in Thailand. You need to be well-prepared for your drivers and your time! Overall it’ s worthy in not crowded season and come in coldest season is the best time.

'Pang Oung' (ปางอุ๋ง) or 'The Royal Forest Project at Pang Tong 2' is located 40 km away from Mae Hong Son town. The deep green glittering reservoir that shine brightly with the sun, home of a pair of swans (a symbol of true love, a long-lasting happy relationship with a partner) became a signature of Pang Oung The enormous evergreen pine trees forest is one of the romantic scene in the north of Thailand, the famous wedding photoshoot site. Along the bank of the reservoir in the national park reserve as the camping area and usually packed with people in winter especially by the end of the year Pang Oung is a peaceful and calming forest that can soothe your mind, hidden away in the mountain. The path to get there was not easy either, the short twists, sharp turns, and high slop made me really dizzy while driving The national park has the border next to Myanmar or Burma, the path to get there were off the grid, muddy rough terrain road, the scene that I debut my first ever fall there! ‍ (Entrance Fee Thai Adult 20THB Child 10THB / Foreigner Adult 100THB Child 50THB, Open Daily) *The ticket can be used to entrance Tham Pla (Fish Cave) and Pha Suea Waterfall

I don't think it is worth a visit. It makes sense to come camping here, because it's chilled and quite, but it is just a man made pond. There also a little hike that might be interesting, but nothing special.

What a magical place! Since it was off-season, we had the whole place to ourselves. This place was the highlight of our trip!! We befriended Mo a lovely dodge who accompanied us on the raft! 😍 We miss her already! Sending her love and hugs!!

There are 2 main activities to do here… 1) Take a bamboo raft ride to the middle of the lake to see the beautiful scenery and you might also see the mist floating above the water during cold temperatures such as the winter season (December) & rainy season (September) in Thailand. Each ride costs 150 THB. It is based on a first come first serve basis and you just go on the day itself. There is no advance booking of tickets. They would start in the early morning about 6am. 2) Camping. There is a park where you will need to pay entrance fee (100 THB) to enter and set up your tent. There are also some single room style accommodation and all the rooms have private toilet & bathroom. Most of them have no sink / no flush toilet system (400 to 600 THB). Some have both sink and flush toilet (700 THB to 1000 THB and up). As camping is the main activity here , the accommodations here are under demand. Hence , very few are put up on hotel websites. You can try to add their contact number (via LINE app) or Facebook from google maps. I would recommend Pala coffee homestay (700 THB and up) or another bunch of bungalow type houses near the bamboo raft pier. (1000 THB and up) There are some local food stalls (with English menu) and shops beside the road lining the accommodations. There is nothing much else to do here besides camping and the bamboo raft ride so 1 or 2 nights is enough. To get here , you can take the yellow pickup truck (songtheow) from Mae hong son town at 11.30am. It takes about half an hour to reach here. There are 2 timings that the songtheow will come to pick up passengers from Pang Oung. Around 6am and 12pm.

A very charming village in the high mountains north of Mae Hong Son, close to the Myanmar border. Called ‘little Switzerland’ because of its cool, humid weather and pine trees. Camping in the National Park , next to the large reservoir is popular October-April. December-January the place is very popular and very lively and has a vibrant walking street in the evening time. Lots of restaurants, coffee shops, food stalls. May-October it is quiet but still very much worth visiting. As well as the camp site there are many resorts and guest houses.

Beautiful lake. Go there early morning (around 7am) to see the fog coming out of the water. It is magic! The road there is a bit hard, not broken path but steep. Several local accomodation there so for sure you can fin food and a place to sleep plus the camping is an interesting option as well.

Located at the junction of Highway 1095 and the road to Ban Rak Thai, it's recommended to drive there due to the hot weather. The best time to visit is in the morning or evening when temperatures are cooler. Along the way to the bridge, you'll encounter rice fields and local produce.

Authentic Thailand food which taste is not compromised for tourists. Seems to cater to large tour groups too which can be a bit noisy. Ignore the rowdy crowd and focus on the dishes! The broth of the steamed fish is the best I have tasted by far, not too spicy and sour! Additional soup is given for you to ladle in more to refill.

We had bad experience with service attitude from the restaurant’s staff. They refused to serve drinks just after their announcement of last order few minutes before 2pm. The green curry was of too diluted gravy. The other dishes were not impressive too.

Great service albeit it being a little slow as there were plenty of ya. The food quality is good considering they had a lot on their plate. Pizza was a little fat, but decent. Skip the Burmese chilli con carne.

Never had myanmar food before so I did wanna try, was pretty okay actually. Dunno if this would consider authentic tho. Portions are fulfilling. Price is not too steep. No dishes are spectacular, and kao soy tastes really unauthentic.

Found “Salween River Restaurant” in a search for “Best Vegetarian restaurants in Mae Hong Son.” It came up at or near the top and I wasn’t disappointed. Using local produce, they have a diversity of food but I went straight for the Shan/Burmese food as the owner/cook is of Shan Burmese ethnicity. The Burmese green tea salad was absolutely delicious and almost a meal unto itself. The “Burmese potato cakes” and “potato and eggplant curry” were similarly delicious. All of these dishes are vegan. To drink I had the “Refreshing banana smoothie” with lime, banana, pandan leaves and coconut. Original, delicious and refreshing. Thank you for the great food and service! I will be back. Bonus: they have both on the floor and table seating options and just a few minutes out of town it is a very serene environment.

Very lovely people, superbly tasteful food (the Burmese green tea salad is a must-try). Highly recommended!

A haven to eat in the shade Comfortable eatery on outskirts of Mae Hong Son. International inspired, Thai and local Shan cuisine. Try the Shan meals as they are fabulous. Plenty of parking.

Cute spot that serves a range of food. Good vegetarian options and lots of meat dishes can be substituted with tofu. Had the Burmese green tee salad which was my first time trying, it was yum. A bit to salty for me but I liked all the textures and garlic and chill flavour. Also had the Potatoes and eggplant curry which was warmed and very filling, good flavour.

This place was so delicious that it could easily be among the best food we’ve had in Thailand. Especially since we ordered all vegetarian options. The salsa was delicious. Don’t expect American corn chips to dip it in. This is all about the salsa itself. The vehicle for salsa are more like fried rice chips, and that doesn’t matter. It’s the salsa itself that wins life. The Burmese Potatoes. Wow. The crunchy exterior mixed with the hot potato interior of something hash brown like. With a sweet dipping sauce that left us wanting for more. The third dish we had was Burmese Green Tea Salad which was unusually scrumptious! If you’re looking for a place to eat and this review popped up, hit “direction to this place” on Google Maps and just get here. The food and atmosphere will not disappoint! Plus they have large cold beer!

A lovely gem of a place. Delicious food and super friendly host. Has very cute puppy 🐶 Must order their signature potato n eggplant curry, it was the best vegetarian curry we’ve had in Thailand. Tom yum soup, omelet, potato cake tastes really good too! Plenty of parking outside. Definitely will return!

Please take the 30 minute walk or 6 minute drive! You won’t regret it! This place is outside of the main part of town, but so worth it. Open 7:30am-22:00 everyday, according to their menu. They also are open to modifying for vegetarian/vegan diets. It’s family run and the entire family was so kind. They were able to provide recommendations as to their best sellers. We got: Crispy Shan style poppadum's & homemade salsa, eggplant and potato curry, and the veggie burger. All very delicious. Would recommend all three dishes. The seating was lovely, with cushions or benches as your options. & it’s affordable for the delicious food and a nice setting. Also, a nice chill bar with live music just a minute away.

One of my favorite cafes in Thailand! I visited often while staying in town for a week. It was the perfect place for me to get coffee, food, and set up and work from my laptop several hours each day. The owners are very nice, food is great, and there are lots of tables. I highly recommend it!

La Tasca Pizza Pasta Thai Food, a restaurant located near a massage place, offers delicious pepperoni pizza and other Italian dishes. It is situated next to a 7-11 where customers can purchase cold beer. The owner of the restaurant is known for being friendly and sweet. Although the pizza may be slightly pricey at 209B, it is still considered a nice treat. Alternatively, one can find cheaper pizza options at the night market by the lake.
Surprisingly good pepperoni pizza. Don't expect Italian pizza shop. Lady owner/chef is lovely and there is a very friendly shop cat.

Really friendly staff, nice place to have some yummy Italian food. The Pizza is more homemade style than the classic Italian Pizza, but tasted really good and they put a lot of cheese on it! Pasta was also tasty. Plus is a the Tabasco and olive oil. We also had two smoothies, they were huge and tasty. And finally, prices are really fair. Recommended to try :)

Very good pepperoni 🍕 pizza, only one table in front on massage place where they make pizza in the back! Right ne t to 7-11 where you can get cold beer. The owner in friendly and sweet. Pizza was 209B which isn’t cheap but a nice treat. You can get pizza for cheaper at the night market by the lake. I was in a rain storm and was grateful for this place /) they also have spaghetti, basically Italian restaurant meets massage :)

Best Pizza in town!! The sweet lady makes the dough herself and is extremely friendly and always has a radiant smile on her face. We ate here almost everyday it's so good!

I'm sorry for my compatriot, who wasn't on site, but this restaurant needs urgently someone who is truly able to run it, otherwise I suppose that it won't have a prosper future. Local people who are in the shop are good for a asian restaurant, but maybe not for an italian one. We ate 2 chicken salads not exactly perfect. The chicken was pale and cold. Salad was wet and cut in too large pieces. Seasoning was insufficient for the salad. Bread was the Farmhouse brand made warm. I hope warmly that other dishes are better than mine. I put 3 stars to encourage them. Good luck.

The pizzas are prepared a little different to normal but are quite tasty and reasonably priced. The service is good. Have nice cold beer. Still operating during difficult covid time. Probably the best place to go in MHS for Italian style food.

Restaurant
Located on Udom Chao Nithet Rd in Mae Hong Son, Kai Mook Restaurant is a popular dining spot for both locals and tourists. Positioned just a few doors down from the corner with Khunlumprapas, this large establishment offers a good selection of Thai and international cuisine. With two levels and a quiet alley setting, it caters to tourist groups seeking quality food. While prices are not low, they are reasonable considering the tasty dishes on offer.
The food was delicious. The service was good. Love atmosphere in the restaurant. Communication could be a little difficult but if you could speak Thai would be great or use google translate app to assist to ensure no misunderstanding in your orders.
Steven Yee — Google review
Way overrated and a little overpriced. Tourist buses bring a captive audience, so I'm thinking the standard has dropped. At least the beer was cold.
Jamie R — Google review
Good choice of food, price reasonable, not the best you may have in Thailand but depend on the meal, so overall it's fine.

Came at 18.45. 4 persons, ordered 3 dishes, the first dis Gaeng Hang Le (which is supposed to be a ready cooked curry) came at 19.17, and then the rest of the dishes never came.... so just one dish for 4, we don't wait to wait. Clean shop, fine but slow service, so-so taste, overpriced for sure, we will not recommend here if you totally run out of other choices and have loads of time to waste. We paid 250 for that bowl of curry in this restaurant. Then we went to the walking street next to the clock tower that we found the most delicious bbq sticky rice with eco packing which only 20 baht.... the appreciation-needed sellers are always least appreciated in Thailand, spread your money wider and wiser.

A disaster. I asked for capucino. After 15 minutes, waitress came and she claimed coffee is sold out. Then I order spring roll and a coke. After 20 minutes , waiter brings coke and spring roll is sold out. Nobody speak English and the only word they seem to know is " sold out". I will finish my coke and I will leave.
