The Municipal Museum Amadeo de Souza Cardoso, located in Amarante, pays homage to the internationally recognized artist known for his cubist-inspired paintings. Housed in a converted ancient church and former convent, the museum features both temporary and permanent exhibitions of works by Amadeo de Souza Cardoso as well as modern artists like Modigliani and Antonio Carneiro.
We had a wonderful visit here. Exquisite.

Museum in a old and authentic building. Recently renovated. Unfortunately the collection is too small for the size of the museum. It's stay a little bit empty. Family tickets cost 8 EUR.
Family Tour Hunters — Google review
Interesting small museum. Worth a visit if you're in town anyway.
Doigen — Google review
It's sad that one of Portugal's greatest artists has to share space with complete strangers with works of far inferior quality. The curators should think about putting up works by artists who have been recognized by thousands and not works by unknowns. Save a small room for the new talents and put next to the masters those who really deserve to be there.

A lovely well produced museum. Many artists. Definitely a place to visit. Incorporated in a old monastery

Great small museum with a breadth of Portuguese art..a lot of variety for a small museum, and a cool building to boot! Worth a stop.

Small museum on an amazing old building. The entrance fee is super cheap (1€) and gives you access to all exhibitions. The building itself is worth the symbolic price. Right in the centre of beautiful Amarante, one of the jewels of northern Portugal

Bridge

Points of Interest & Landmarks
Ponte de São Gonçalo, a graceful bridge in Amarante, Portugal, was built in 1790 to replace the original 13th-century structure that was destroyed by flooding. Made of golden stone and adorned with Baroque spires, the bridge holds historical significance as the site of a heroic battle in 1809 against Napoleon's invading French army. It is often depicted alongside the monastery on postcards of Amarante.
We stopped here on a tour. It is very pretty! We took pictures and we also got to check out the local market near by. You can also find a public bathroom at this market in case you’re looking for one.

A very classical city. Leisurely, romantic and comfortable! It's worth spending a day browsing slowly. A cup of coffee and simple snacks while enjoying the beautiful river and pedestrians!
Frank Tsai — Google review
A trully look alike romanic bridge that allegedly was rebuilt by Saint Gonçalo, in the same place of a original one who collapsed due to a flood. Nearby there is the church and convent in honour of the Saint, inside church's cloisters the Amadeo de Souza-Cardoso museum was developed, he is know for futurism and modernism works, some of this works and caricatures can be seen inside. As curiosity Amadeo was a contemporary of Pablo Picasso and Gaudi in the city of Paris. A parking area can be found close to the church so its possible to park nearby and cross it by car. The river landscape, bridge, museum and other places to visit are very conveniently close. Some nice coffee shops and traditional bakeries and restaurants are in this area, a must visit city!

Zé da Calçada is a traditional restaurant in Amarante that offers exceptional service and well-prepared dishes. While known for their cabrito, it's recommended to try the delicious octopus fillets. Located by the riverfront with a terrace, this establishment provides a great lunch spot with stunning views of the Tamega river and Cathedral. The English-speaking staff are helpful, ensuring easy ordering despite menus being only in Portuguese.
Great lunch location by the river front. Impeccable service and delicious food. Though menus are only in Portuguese, there are very helpful English speaking staff and we have no problem ordering. Interesting options of tapas to start that are brought to the table and you can choose what you want to try. Meal portions are big though it’s 1/2 dose.

A good dinner we got in this Nice restaurant 😎 on 26 /09/2023 . [Coming from Bretagne (Breizh ☝️) in France for a large Road Trip in Portugal , Amarante was our our thirteenth stopover. Great place 🤩 ] we appreciated the dishes, the terrace overlooking the Tãmega river, and the service , not very cheerful but correct and stylish nonetheless. The quality/price ratio was normal, especially when taking, as always, when possible, the half portions, more than enough for big eaters and 30 to 40% cheaper than complete ones .We really enjoyed our choices : I/E for me, bochechas de porco estafadas em vinho tinto + purê de castanhas e repolho branco. For my wife, Bacalhau a zé da calçada that she placed in her top 10 of her list of Bacalhau tasted during our trip. The red wine was OK but no more . This is our “Photo of a Moment” and therefore WE RECOMMEND.

I ordered a la carte, Bacalhau Zé da Calçada and was nice! *but my parents ordered the meal of the day - turkey stuffed with ham & cheese, and a fish dish that wasn't so tasty. Recommendation is to order off the menu. The view and service is impeccable! Would definitely visit again :)

Surprisingly good restaurant. I’ll start with the service, that was something that stood out. The staff professionalism was impeccable, very thoughtful and friendly. The food part was equally amazing. Good quality and generous portions. Good selection of region wines too. And when it was time for dessert the quality was still there. Very very good. All this quality & quantity for good price. The location is perfect, with a beautiful view of the river and the huge church on the other side of the river. If you ever find yourself walking in Amarante looking for a place to have lunch just pass by. Because it’s situated in the old part of the town it’s not so easy to park if you come by car. But most you find parking easily 5min away and like that you get to enjoy the beautiful city of Amarante.

Pobre Tolo is a fantastic place offering a wide range of classic dishes. The menu is diverse, but I chose the octopus cooked in olive oil once again. The desserts were also delightful, particularly the tiramisu! This lovely restaurant delivers a modern and sophisticated take on Portuguese cuisine at reasonable prices. During my lunch visit, I enjoyed their fixed-price meal which included an appetizer, soup, main course (grilled sea bass or pork cheek), and drink.
Great restaurant! Fantastic Portuguese food. Lovely wine selection. Very attentive staff. Thank You Pobre Tolo for great lunch.

Deliciously made simple food, with a nudge to the upscale (still not it). Serious, yet attentive staff. The portions are enjoyably filling. Menu is geared to a travelers taste, rather than to it's location, hence I would have loved to find here something I don't know, because the cooking was good. Overall solid dinner.

Wow! Just one of the top restaurants in Portugal for me now. Located in pretty location, graceful interior, spacious, what a friendly staff today were serving our lunch, we appreciate so much that we were welcomed to have it even if we came almost to the closing time. But the most important is the FOOD! It is so so so delicious, that we were just murmuring our pleasure loudly, from everything what we have ordered - everything was so so delicious and interesting, presentation of food with little details also worth applauses. Thanks amazing people, who make this food. But manteiga de cabra - just blowed our mind away! That was incredible and new! Wow! Wow! Wow! Wines - such a big collcetion. Thanks a lot! We will come back 50 more times 😅 to your restaurant. Yumm! 😋

Situated in on the best places in Amarante, this restaurant provides an amazing experience. It’s very easy to park nearby and on the way from your car till the restaurant you can enjoy the beautiful sight next to river. When you arrive at the restaurant you immediately get the feeling that you’re in for a treat. The place looks very cozy and modern at the same time. The staff is very friendly and thoughtful. The selection of traditional dishes is very well balanced, providing good options for the meat lovers as well as the fish ones. The wine selection is also huge, typical from the majority of good restaurants in that region. The food it self is very well platted and as tasty as it could be. To finalize, the price is quite appealing when you consider the place and the food quality. Couldn’t recommend it enough.
Carlos Pimentel — Google review
A wonderful restaurant alongside the Rio Tamega not far from the town centre. The upstairs restaurant is tastefully decorated and the service was excellent. It is obviously a popular spot for locals, which is a recommendation in itself! The menu may not be huge, but the quality of the food and the size of the portions outweighs everything else. The starters were beautifully presented with an array of choice that almost made a meal in itself. The recommended choice of bacalhau cooked in bread with a cheese sauce was wonderful - the photos of the outside and inside do not do it justice. The local Vinho Verde was the perfect accompaniment to the meal! If you are visiting Amarante, a meal at Pobre Tolo is an experience you should not miss!

A lovely restaurant serving modern upscale twists on Portuguese food...without upscale prices! We went for lunch and had their price fixe for 10€ which included an appetizer, soup, main dish (grilled sea bass or pork cheek) and drink. Everything was absolutely delicious - the pork cheek was especially good! Fantastic location along the river. The interior is tastefully decorated and the staff are warm and friendly. Will be back next time we visit.

Nice place and nice treat. Bacallau probe tolo was an inmense blob of battered cod with potatoes and some veggies (turnip tops I think). Not very tasty though. Much enough to feed 4 people. I guess that wasn't the best option to go for but you know there's always a risk and we took it. Still, a nice place to go, very quiet&clean, with free toothpaste in the toilets Tip: as usual in Portugal, be careful about the couvert

A Quelha - Adega Regional is a delightful restaurant that offers a traditional Portuguese dining experience. Despite the passage of time, it has managed to maintain its charm and authenticity. The menu features classic dishes like "Coelho a cacador" (rabbit casserole) which are complemented by refreshing Espadeiro rose young wine. The service is commendable, although there is room for improvement. With both indoor and outdoor seating options, the restaurant can accommodate approximately 25 tables.
It has been a few years since we last came here. Thankfully the Quelha is still a very enjoyable experience and a traditional style menu. Today we chose the "Coelho a caçador" ( rabbit casserole ) along with a jug of the chilled Espadeiro rose young wine. Just delicious. Excellent service. Opens for lunch and dinner 1130-1400 and 1900-2200. The place has about 25 tables outside and inside. Parking is on the nearby streets.

Nice setting, food average at best, service mixed. Wine was actually very close to the supermarket price which I respect & it was nice. Do I understand the ‘amazing’ reviews, no. Did the service ruin the experience? For sure..... Would I come back, no. I’m a foodie to be fair, from London but I’m not oblivious to decent food & good service. To be honest service at the end did improve but the welcoming, ‘how are you, can I help, didn’t materialise’. Am I bored to death being here? Definitely.... Shame. Starters were in the wine menu that we had no idea about until we left. Food average, wine good.

Avoid this restaurant. It is a nice and very busy restaurant. The owner ( I guess) speaks a fluent french but you are really seen as tourist. We paid a very expensive bill for 2 dishes. It is clearly out of Portuguese price range and it is not a fancy place. We went there because it was recommended by a local person but the restaurant clearly treated us badly. I hope at least the very expensive price they charged us will go to employees not to the owner only. Please avoid if you are not from around.

We just had one of our best meals at this local, traditional restaurant. Lightly fried hake was awesome, and grilled octopus was perfectly cooked, tender and flavorful. Both were super fresh, too. Service was friendly and a family affair. Look for the name on the stone above the door!

Very good, traditional Portuguese food with a no frills kind of vibe! The bread was divine and the main course of "lulas grelhadas" was incredible. Simple food with pure, delicious flavours. Great value - couldn't believe that bread, 12 jar of wine, water, 1/2 portion meal and dessert was just over 10 euros! Go support this awesome, family-run restaurant if you're in town! You won't be disappointed in terms of the food.

The dining experience at Pena restaurant was a dream come true for food enthusiasts. Every moment of the evening was cherished and appreciated. The service provided by the staff was truly remarkable, with both employees displaying kindness and expertise in recommending the perfect dishes and wines. Their extensive knowledge and professionalism were truly impressive. The culinary offerings were nothing short of spectacular, with impeccably prepared duck, beef, and fish dishes that left a lasting impression on the taste buds.
The experience was a foodies dream! I loved ever second of the evening. The service was amazing. Both employers were absolutely nice and capable to give us perfect recommendations of which plate and which wine we should take. It was amazing to see that kind of knowledge and professionalism. The food was spectacular. The duck and the beef were prepared in a perfect way and the taste was incredible. The desert (chocolate cake) was everything you can wish for. The drinks were also very good, but I want to highlight the 2007 port wine and the red wine for the main course - both were perfection. The taste was divine! The whole dinner was an incredible experience and I wish I could give more than 5 stars.

Overall we were disappointed. The ambience is quite delightful - furniture, lighting, surroundings. However, some dishes were not satisfactory - the salmon in pastry was dry and was returned. The wine came after much waiting. Dirty dishes were not removed between courses. Port cheeks and duck were satisfactory. A misunderstanding over the complimentary drink and appetizer was well handled.

Restaurant
Tasquinha Da Ponte is a charming traditional eatery run by a father and son, offering a welcoming atmosphere for vegans in an area with limited vegan options. The food is described as satisfying and delicious, with generous portions. Recommendations include the vegan cabbage soup, soy sausages with roasted potatoes, and sautéed vegetables. Visitors also praise the delightful roasted apple dessert. This restaurant comes highly recommended in "Wild Portugal" for its exemplary service and authentic dining experience.
A great little traditional place where father and son offer a relaxed experience for vegans in a area with few, or good, options to eat vegan!🙏 The food was very satisfying, delicious and with great sized portions! I recommend the cabbage soup (Caldo Verde . Ask it to be vegan, without the slice of chouriço!), the soy sausages with roasted potatoes (salsichas de soja com batatas a murro) and a portion of sauteed vegetables. For dessert you can have the delicious roasted apple (maçã assada)! Enjoy 🙏😉❤️
Marta L. — Google review
We came across Tasquinha da Ponte while walking in the area, looking for a place to have dinner. The interior is pretty classic for a Portuguese tasca, with some interesting details on the walls. Unfortunately the food was not outstanding, as one would expect from a traditional Portuguese restaurant. We had the pica pau, which had a weird-tasting sauce (francesinha-like but too sweet for our taste), the chouriço (which is good indeed), hake fillets (they were tasty but a bit greasy) and vegetables. We were really expecting the vegetables to be cabbage and carrots, as it usually is in Portugal, but instead we have got something similar to sprouts (grelos) mixed with some beans. They would have been good to if they weren't so so salty. To forget about that all, we had baba de camelo for dessert (and it was great). The wine was good and the service fast and friendly enough. The prices are average. Maybe we just choose the dishes wrong but it's not an experience we would repeat.

Nice atmosphere and ok food. Be careful as a bit dishonest. Clearly one person dining and will only need a small/half portion which is the norm for Portugal. I pointed to the small and they served a large and charged me as such. Not a huge amount but the point is they are so dishonest! So be warned! Go elsewhere, many more hospitable Portuguese around this town.
