The Waggon is a delightful casual eatery that offers a relaxed and inviting ambiance, making it the ideal spot for a light lunch or dinner. It caters well to small groups and provides options for both vegetarians and those with gluten sensitivities. The menu can easily be accessed online, allowing guests to peruse their choices beforehand. The establishment boasts a serene atmosphere with warm lighting and no intrusive music, catering particularly well to individuals with sensory needs.
It was our first meal in the scotland and couldn’t have asked better than this! Was early on my reservation but host graciously accommodated us. Decided to visit this place based on previous reviews and main menu having some vegetarian options, to our surprise they had secret vegan menu as well when we arrived which made life tremendously easier 😁. Food was delicious and cooked to perfection, Sticky Toffee Pudding was show stopper! Definitely recommend this hidden gem if you are around this area.

Really nice casual restaurant, perfect for a light lunch or dinner. Great for small groups too. They have vegetarian and gluten free options available on the menu which can be viewed/downloaded from the website which is ideal if you need help deciding what you want before you go. It's quiet and warmly lit with no loud music which is perfect for those with sensory needs. It's nicely spaced out with decent wheelchair access. Though it's not on the list to tick, I'd definitely recommend the pizza, especially if you love a thick base and mozzarella.

We attended this restaurant with my family because the ratings seem very good and lots of people seem to recommend this place. However this restaurant was a clear low-point for us in Kelso. Maybe this was a uniquely bad experience that just happened to us. We had the fish and chips as well as the meat pie. The meat tasted good and that was it. Fish had no taste, chips were bland, the coleslaw, like almost everywhere else in the UK it seems, was way too heavy and mainly just consisted of mayonnaise. The cherry on top was a stone in the salad which I luckily didn't break a tooth on. Anyways, the venue was pretty basic. The music in the room we got placed in was way too loud and very obnoxious. The staff were nice tho. They did seem very open and willing to help. I still don't understand how the restaurant was so full. I guess if you're accustomed to this level of food, why wouldn't you eat here. For us this was a hit and a big miss.

Booked in for Sunday lunch, whilst on holiday in the area. was welcomed with a friendly smile. Decided to opt for the Sunday carvery, well, absolutely amazing. Choice of 3 meats, all beautiful cooked to perfection, accompanied by fresh vegetables & Yorkshire puddings. Highly recommended if your in the area.

We were lucky to get a table (Saturday), & so glad we did. Delicious food, excellent service. I can recommend the Locally captured haggis balls in pepper sauce, and the sweet potato skinnies with garlic mayo. My friend loved her calamari. Coffee was excellent too, and came exactly as I wanted it. Yes, I'm particular about my double espresso! All the food being delivered around us looked delish too. highly recommend

Lovely food, very pleasant staff and a great atmosphere. The price was reasonable. We will definitely be back
Margaret Hart — Google review
You don't need to book in advance as I just turned up, I was shown to my table, asked what I would like to drink, and given a menu. The choice was very good, once I had picked what I wanted to eat it wasn't long before it arrived and there was plenty of it. The staff are all wonderful, welcoming, and friendly. The restaurant was clean and tidy, and the service was quick . I would recommend that you try it out for yourself

We loved the food, it was excellent. We had the steak & ale pie, the gravy was so rich, mmm. And a large fish & chips. We both had lovely desserts. We had the cheese cake & ice cream and the waffle 🧇 😋. Staff were all very friendly. Will definitely be back.

Sort’ve meandering our way back to England and I decided we pick here. Very family oriented pub, with friendly staff and a quick service. The portion sizes are huge, but all the food we had was tasty. I bought back the rest of my pepperoni pizza with me, it was so moorish. Nice and decent prices as well. Would recommend, plus if ever coming back to Scotland we’ll call again if in the area.
Kathryn Hall — Google review
The portion is huge! I had a dish of deep fried haddock with coleslaw, salad, peas and chips. The bread crumb was nicely seasoned and so crunchy whilst the fish was so juicy. I was impressed with haggis balls. They were simply deep fried with crispy batter, but so tasty. The burgers! They have all sorts of burgers that satisfy all taste buds and huge appetite. I highly recommend this place especially if you are going with children. The prices are very reasonable.

We've eaten twice here this week while on holiday. We couldn't fault the food or service either time. We tried different dishes on each visit, all were home cooked, tasty and good portions. Price was very reasonable too.

Been going to the waggon for quite some time and has its moments where service isn't as good but most of the time service is brilliant and food is lush!
Arlene Rae-Hewitt — Google review
Dog friendly. Friendly staff. Service was quick. Soup was good but main courses weren’t so great, husband had the chicken off the specials menu & I had the tartan burger. Generous portions but taste was quite bland.

Stopped off at Kelso on way back to Dundee. Looked around for someplace to have lunch when i remembered about the Wagon inn. It was well worth the visit, great choice of food to choose from the menu and at reasonable prices. Staff were friendly and gave good service. We will come back here again, if or when we visit Kelso.😊

The café also boasts an impressive selection of beverages, such as lattes and teas. Although unable to indulge in dessert on this occasion, it is highly recommended for those who enjoy delectable treats.
Lovely out of the way cafe. We had soup, lentil, with croutons and bread. My other half had chicken burger and chips with latte and tea. It was amazing. Didn't have room for cake but will definitely try some next time we're there

Nice wee Cafe that has a good atmosphere and is clean, warm and inviting with excellent service and lovely friendly staff. Plenty of parking in the Square which is only a minutes walk away. The fried breakfast is the best that I've had so far in a Cafe and is reasonably priced too and filling. Highly recommend.

Lovely wee place for a bite to eat, I had the burger brunch which was very filling, so no room for cake... Next time I'll plan better.

Had a fabulous all day breakfast here. The traditional Scottish breakfast that my husband has was fantastic - haggis, tattie scones, black pudding etc... I had the vegetarian breakfast and it was excellent. Very hearty and very good value for money. Our dog was made welcome and they even brought over some biscuits and water for him. Very friendly staff and nice atmosphere. A great find in Kelso.

Arrived around 9.30 after a 5 hour journey to attend Kelso races. Don't know if it was because it was race day but very busy, some tables even reserved. Ordered full breakfast, didn't take long to come, by far the best cooked breakfast I've ever had, 2 sausage, 2 bacon, fried egg, Tom's, mushrooms, beans, black pudding, haggis, hash brown, potato cake and toast all this for £9.50, all served with a friendly, welcoming smile. If I was coming to Kelso again, I definitely pop in for a superb breakfast. 👌

The Cobbles - Freehouse & Dining is a contemporary gastropub with a bright and airy interior that offers a variety of dishes, including steaks and fine dining options. They also serve locally brewed ale. Additionally, there is another restaurant called Cottage Garden Tea Room located across from the abbey, which serves tea, coffee, and light lunches (closed on Sundays and Wednesdays between November and Easter, as well as on Mondays in January and February).
Amazing Scottish food! Best we had while visiting Scotland for 2 weeks! Highly recommend. Be sure to book a reservation as this is a popular spot.

Good Food, Friendly Service, Good Value. Four of us popped in for a quick lunch before the Kelso races. I had a pastrami bloomer (sandwich). Others had a great soup, kipper pate (lots of it) and black pudding, all promptly served. The lads had a nice pint of pale ale. Be careful to choose from all three menus. Pizzas and desserts are on the drinks menu. Very confusing! We were surprised and disappointed to discover that face masks are still compulsory in Scotland.

Went for lunch with the wife service was good at first got me and my wife a seat straight away , oddly quite for a Sunday , ordered drinks first I got the stout what was watered down and the wife got larger what was alright nice and refreshing, starters where plain what we didn’t mind but the pots where chipped, I got my fish and chips in some odd metal tray chips where nice but the fish 🤮 it was soggy and mushy and the peas where gray , the wife ordered the beef she said the beef was nice but all the vegetables tasted like they had garlic salt added and got sickly, mentioned this to the waitress she said she would tell the chef, nothing was done and then waited almost 20 minutes for the bill , will not be visiting again better restaurant close by , I will add photo of proof of purchase

This is a diamond of a little pub right in the town centre. Beautiful food - we had the steak pie and the crown of partridge. This was followed by the banana and peanut butter ice cream. All good portions, home cooked and totally delicious.
Chris Hoult — Google review
We had a lovely meal on Saturday night. Food was great my husband especially liked the seafood tagliatelle. Staff were attentive without being annoying. It was quite quiet but that's not the restaurants fault. The prices were reasonable. Would love to return and would definitely recommend.
Sarah Davidson — Google review
Booked for an evening meal based on reviews. However, we were quite disappointed to be fair. Staff were friendly and the layout fine but wasn't impressed with the food. Paid nearly £90 for 2 including drinks. Rib eye steak was only ok at best and not worth £27 followed by a disappointing cheeseboard. Burgers etc that we saw looked very good so I think we maybe just ordered the wrong meal.
Paul Hudson — Google review
Nice cosy place with good selection of beers. Think they just got the fish delivery in because smelled like I got hit in the face with a salmon. But that’s good it’s fresh fish. No complaints from me. Chicken and waffles was good - great size portions.
Charlie Chan — Google review
I got the Shakshuka starter and a portion of chunky chips for lunch with a can of cold cider. The food arrived nice and hot but Shakshuka would have been much nicer if the yolk in the egg wasn’t hard so that the bread could be dipped in it, the sauce was nice though but the garlic bread was burnt and inedible. I asked for some bread which was very nice but it took a while. The chunky chips were nice, I’d recommend these but not the Shakshuka.

Had friends visiting for the weekend so booked a table at the Cobbles. Not my first time, but as usual a fabulous meal and drinks. Staff always attentive and chatty, very relaxed. Food outstanding, had a break from my usual burger and went for the chicken waffle for the first time. It's definitely my favourite dish now. Side dishes of chips and onions rings were excellent. We had ice cream to finish and realised it's from a local supplier, it was incredible; despite a great dessert menu it'll always be the ice cream for me. Thank you to the Cobbles for a fabulous evening.

Amazing food. Top hospitality! Could not fault this place. Awesome beer on tap too

Really surprised by this lovely Gastro pub situated in the heart of Kelso town centre. They accommodated 4 adults and 2 children without any issues at all. The menu was absolutely delicious and the prices were incredibly reasonable. I had a delicious home made kebab, my partner had a great vegetarian bean burger and our guests had pasta and the steak pie. When combined with a pleasant drinks menu and a lovely host it was a really memorable meal in a town where really good eats are few and far between. Highly recommend it either if you’re staying locally or need somewhere to pop in on your travels either further north, or down south.

Lovely friendly pub with wonderful staff . Tempest Brewery provide a great range of real ales plus we really enjoy the food it’s the best in town and the fresh baked pizzas are so delicious. Honestly the last time I had a pizza that good I was in Naples xx

Italian restaurant
We made a reservation on a Sunday and were able to dine at our preferred time of 7:30. Despite not being crowded, there were enough patrons to create a comfortable atmosphere. The service was prompt and satisfactory. Feeling hungry, we requested bread and olives before our starters, which arrived quickly along with olive oil and sundried tomatoes. The waitstaff, although young, displayed competence in their roles.
Excellent meal, lovely atmosphere and staff, highly recommended.

Exquisite dishes, friendly engaging service and chilled stuff perfectly chilled. A fantastic family meal. Crème Brûlée of the Moment was divine. The whole meal was magnificent and memorable.

We attended for a special birthday, party of six. The organiser had agreed kn a set menu which had plenty to choose from. I, sadly am lactose intolerant which greatly restricted my choices, however the staff and chef were brilliant and offered me amazing alternatives. Fantastic atmosphere, friendly knowledgeable staff and fabulously prepared food. Well worth a visit if you are in Kelso.

We booked on the day (a Sunday) and were able to eat at the time we wanted (7:30). Although not crowded, there were several diners - enough to feel comfortable. Service was satisfactorily rapid. We were hungry, and asked for bread and olives before our starter. This was served very quickly and included olive oil and sundried tomatoes. The waiters were very youthful but perfectly competent. The starters (scallops and goat's cheese) and mains (rare lamb) were extremely good, the latter properly pink yet tender. We were too full for a dessert, but the coffee was good. An excellent meal to celebrate 30 years of being married.

Really nice venue, once inside it is very cosy and we'll appointed. Ate here twice and had a great meal and good service. The only negative is the menu board and outside (some plants?) could and did put us off. But don't be put off a really nice restaurant with friendly staff.

Phoned up just after opening time to see if we had to book, we're told no they had availability that night. We were recommended the Contented Vine while visiting Kelso for 2nights, well worth the visit!!

Gorgeous room. Nice chill atmosphere. I've given the food 4 stars because my lasagna was pretty bland. The starter and desert were great though. 4/5 would choccie mousse again

Just had a wonderful and lovely dinner with my friends, it was a great experience. Food was excellent, we loved every dish. The service was exceptional, staff was super friendly and helpful. Great wine selection, we enjoyed the Barbera quite a lot. I definitely recommend this place.

Don't be deceived by the outside, the menu was diverse and everything we had was delicious and good value. This would be our top recommendation for dinner in kelso. We had pasta, mixed starters, venison, deserts and wine, all great, a lovely evening. A waiter even went to the trouble to draw a map of the UK for one of our group from NZ/Cambodia.
Carlos Wang — Google review
Nice atmosphere and good food. Friendly and efficient service.
Wim Ton — Google review
Really excellent find. Great food and really friendly service. They fitted us in on one day and it was so good we came back the next day but we had to book as it was buzzing. Food better than much more expensive options in the wider area.
B S (BSonly) — Google review
The food was really delicious. We had the duo of market fish which was really good, tender, fresh and tasty. My OH had the rack of lamb, which was two lamb chops... I think it should be at least three to constitute a rack, so he felt the portion could have been bigger. But it was delicious and he thoroughly enjoyed it. The service was a bit slow, we think they forgot our dessert order, but the staff were lovely and we weren't bothered at all. I had a chat about whiskies with the manager, and was recommended a dram from a local distillery as a digestiv. The only negatives for me were, the physical menus were tatty and dirty, they needed upgrading to do the food and wine justice. A laminator and better folders would make a world of difference! Secondly was the toilets, which were unisex, which I wouldn't mind if it wasn't so dated. The old tiles and decor made them feel dirty, (the urinals were smelly) they were really unpleasant considering the rest of the restaurant is so lovely, modern and clean. These two things would bring the whole experience up to a far more luxury standard.

Salt’N’Fire is a restaurant in Kelso that offers a mouthwatering beef burger, which is always of exceptional quality. The fries are the best in town by far, even without any upgrades. The menu is innovative and the chef goes out of their way to accommodate special requests, especially when it comes to kids' meals. It provides a refreshing change from typical pub food in Kelso and has an impressive selection of drinks on offer.
We had a great family meal here last night. The staff were so friendly and attentive. Food was amazing too. Can't wait to come back soon.

Great food, great value and great service from Lucy. Didn't get her colleagues names but they were equally as attentive, friendly and professional. Huge compliments to the chef. We were there on a quiet night but still, the atmosphere was still enjoyable and engaging.

Lovely meal last night, Vytas went above and beyond 'with a variety of absolutely delicious and inventive dishes. I am a vegetarian and I haven't had this quality of a meal in a very long time. The shredded veg. salad, the veg. wantons, the roasted cauliflower and falafel wrap were superb! Also, service was excellent, Lucy served the best cocktails, my friends and I had a terrific time, and woke up with no hangover this morning, just super happy with the memory of a great evening. Thank you Vytas and Lucy for being so thoughtful. We are looking forward to doing this again soon!

Just to say that my review was for Lemon and Thyme. I've heard that the restaurant has either changed owners, or has a new chef and I've not been since it because Salt'n'Fire. I hope it is still as good as it was. Want to have a really enjoyable meal? Come here! A menu that’s has enough choice, but isn’t overwhelming. A menu where you still have trouble choosing because it all sounds good ... and it turns out that it looks and tastes excellent. Front of house are friendly, amusing and attentive. If you live in the Borders or are just visiting, then pay Lemon and Thyme a visit. In my view this is the best restaurant in the Borders. We were back and I thought I should update the review? Was it as good as I remembered? Oh yes! Ryan looked after us front of house Not sure what to have because you like the look of everything on the menu, or what to pair with your meal? Ryan is there to help and knows his food and drink. The kitchen was producing consistent, high quality food, even though it was a busy night and I think the restaurant may have been full. We'll be back next month :-)
