Kea

Kea, or Tzia, is a Greek island in the Aegean Sea’s Cyclades archipelago, characterized by hilly countryside and quiet beaches. In the island’s capital, Ioulida or Ioulis, the Archaeological Museum of Kea houses locally excavated artifacts. The Lion of Kea, an ancient stone carving, is a short hike away. The waters around Kea are home to several shipwrecks, including the Titanic’s sister ship, the Britannic in 1916.

Lion of Kea

Sights & Landmarks
Points of Interest & Landmarks
The Kea Lion, a mysterious sculpture crafted from slate during the 6th century BC, is situated beyond the last houses of Ioulidas with a small valley separating it. Visitors can take a delightful 15-minute stroll to reach the sculpture by following wooden signs labelled "Ap" from the top of the primary street until they leave town. The lion is visible across the valley and surrounded by white-painted rocks.
The lion of Kea is worth the visit and for those that dont want too go through the whole path, you can get near the statue by car and walk for the rest 15 mins

Short, picturesque hike to a very ancient and historic statue on a Kea hillside. The road to get to the little parking lot is quite rough, but the parking lot has some shade under large trees, plus a beautiful water fountain.
PK O — Google review
Beautiful stone carved statue with a great history. Short 10 minute hike with great views on the way to the ancient monument. The spot is not crowded and is free to visit (it is even visible from the pathway). Make sure you have a bottle of water with you on sunny days!

Amazing carved image of the Lion of Kea, just a few minutes walk from Ioulis. Could not believe that something so beautiful and ancient would be so accessible. In the UK, you would be charged £15 just to see it!
Martin Clark — Google review
It’s truly amazing to think about that this lion is from 600 B.C… that’s around 957.395 days … and it’s still here…
Jakob Olrik — Google review
I was a little disappointed when I finally arrived at the statue's location! It was not what I expected, because i didn't see any pictures of it before i go there! The trail was very beautiful though!

Very cute lion. Been lying here for centuries. I wonder what the artist was thinking when he/she was working on it. We had a great visit. Greece is so nice :)
Schöne Wohngemeinschaft — Google review
Easy access available with 10min walk from car park. Well maintained path and Lion. Maybe some information about the history and myths could be a nice addition.
Kelly CHRISTINE — Google review
An amazing artifact that has stayed the same, at the same location untouched, in the abandoned farming lots, as the millennia have been passing by. Even today there is probably just one sign that has been added in the last 50 years. It made me feel that time work’s differently here.

Kea Divers is a PADI 5 Star Dive Center that offers a great experience for both beginners and experienced divers. The center is run by Giannis, who is experienced and goes the extra mile to offer a unique diving experience. The staff are professional, flexible, and easy-going, making communication in English easy. They organize boat trips to explore hard-to-access ruins and unspoiled beaches, providing snorkeling equipment in good condition.
We we’re anchored outside of Voukari in our sailboat when the chain got caught on something below and we could not hoist the anchor. Yiannis came within a half hour and freed us easily. He was terrific.
Louise Wollman — Google review
Best team, they are welcoming and so friendly. I'm still a young diver, and they make me feel comfortable, help me with the equipment and the dive. I'm an SSI diver and I've made 3 dives, one with some ancient shipwreck, and the two others were closed to the rocks and have wonderful sealife, fishes, murene, etc. They were all beautiful ! I've made one private boat tour around the island, it can be expensive, but we did it with my friend anyway, and the island is quite beautiful from the sea side. The rocks and wildlife are definitely stunning ! You can decide to stop and take pictures, do some snorkeling. If you also need some snorkeling equipment, you can rent and buy them there. Quite good (they have cressi, mares, polaris and some others). Thank you so much the team, you are so great ! Hope to see you again !

We booked the boat trip with this company. But on the morning weather happened t be very very windy and the waves were very big. We tried to reschedule the trip when we saw the waves on the beach, we had 5 kids and elderly with us, but the owner of keadivers started to yell like a crazy and insult me during the conversation. They took the half of the price for cancellation. But that is not the bad thing. the awful thing is that he told that we are “snobbish ukrainians” and only ukrainians could do like this, trying reschedule the trip. I’m was shocked. Never in 4 years in Greece I met racism…he insulted me in every possible way speaking with me like this is I control the weather. By the international rules of the watersports and sailing he should call me in the morning and speak about weather conditions instead he wanted to have his money not thinking about peoples comfort and safety. Just don’t think a person like him and a company like this should work in a tourism. I was just thinKing about my kids trying to kindly reschedule the trip to the other day and got the discrimination and racists insults instead. I took a video of a boat crashing by the waves and the pier almost impossible to stand on. Never use this company if you want to be safe. This people just don’t care.

I organized a four hour speed boat trip for 10 friends with Kea Divers and had a great experience. Yiannis and his skippers were extremely flexible, professional and easy-going. Communicating in English was never an issue and we were able to explore hard to access ruins by boat and unspoiled beaches. Snorkeling equipment was provided and in good condition. The price felt fair for the value we received.

Sikamia is a stunning and comfortable beach with crystal clear water, making it one of the best beaches on the island. Accessing Sikamia can be tricky, requiring a 4x4 or driving at a slow speed for part of the route, but visitors agree that it's worth the effort. One of the best beaches of the island! Difficult access due to rocky road, has built in umbrellas on the sandy beach and benches under the trees

The café Korissos offers delicious waffles that are truly exceptional, although the omelet could benefit from some additional seasoning. It's important to note that a cat tax may be required in exchange for enjoying their food. The establishment itself is adorned with a lovely view of the harbor and boasts an amiable staff. Though their menu options may be somewhat limited, the café provides an enjoyable experience overall.

With its warm ambiance and delicious food, Paparounas offers an authentic dining experience on this little-known Greek island.
Of the 4 days we stayed on Kea island and the ~6 restaurants we visited, Paparounas was clearly the best. Great service, good prices, and the main thing - wonderful food. Since all the places we ate at served similar food then we could do a good comparison and Paparounas was the best. Thank you!

We stopped in Paparounas after a long hike on the #3 trail. The all day taverna is set on the hillside and you eat outdoors to enjoy all the beauty of the capital. The spicy cheese was perfection, as was his eggplant special of the day. Nice wine, nice owner and the best orange cake. The owner is kind and has a good heart, serving generous portions of delicious food. He wants to make sure that even those with limited resources are well fed.

If you're finding yourself in Kea and you're wondering what would be the best place to eat, then you MUST come to Paparounas. Being on the island and not eat at this place can be considered a tragic loss. I apologize for the cheesiness, but once you tried the food, you'll understand why I say this. So, to the point, the food here is nothing less than delicious! The portions on all dishes are generous and the prices are affordable, you'll get amazing taste and you won't go broke for it. In fact, you'll find yourself very happy to pay for the meal. The environment is cozy and offers a lovely view of Ioulida, while having a tasty cup of their local wine. Their service which is the other highlight other than food is excellent. Antonis, the chef is a charismatic and unique individual. He'll make you feel right at home, specially with his ability to speak several languages and will be more than happy to tour you through the menu. The man knows his island and can tip you which other areas you can visit. The food at Paparounas reflects Antoni's personality, his creativity and his ambition. I can assure you, that you will not regret coming here and you will leave with a smile on your face.

This was the best greek food we had the entire time we were in Greece. We ordered the greek salad, grilled sardines, taziki, portobello mushrooms, and the fisherman’s pasta. All the portions were very generous and affordable. The sauce on the mushrooms was to die for and the sardines were fresh and perfectly seasoned. The service was very helpful, quick, and kind. Wish I could give this place more than 5 stars!!

This restaurant exceeded my expectations in every way. The owner, who fluently spoke Greek, English, and French (possibly more languages), was incredibly friendly. Despite it being the end of the season when many restaurants had limited menus, this one didn't disappoint. The ambience was perfect, and the food was delicious—I even took some extra for lunch. We had dinner with our yacht crew. Generally I was satisfied with the meal. Everything was tasty and fresh. Some of our friends had fish per kilogram and it was a bit disappointing for the price. Overall I would recommend this place. For the local unique flavour try Kea kopanistti. Once in a lifetime experience!

Our dining experience at this particular restaurant, known for its authentic Greek cuisine, was nothing short of pleasant. The menu was a tantalizing array of local delicacies, including fried anchovies and grilled sardines. These two dishes were a seafood lover's dream, each bite resonating with the fresh essence of the sea, cooked to perfection. Alongside, we had a classic Greek salad that came as a refreshing counterpoint. Crisp vegetables interspersed with briny olives, topped with a generous serving of creamy feta cheese - it was truly a medley of textures and flavors that left us wanting more. The crowning jewel of our culinary adventure, however, was the dessert. An almost frozen yogurt, it was beautifully garnished with crunchy almonds and generously drizzled with honey. This created a beautiful balance of flavors and textures that was both soothing and indulgent, a perfect end to our meal. The service was certainly attentive and warm, allowing us ample time to savor our meal and the overall dining experience.

Instead of the typical greasy mousaka and overcooked pasta you'll get flavorful dishes cooked with seasonal local ingredients served with a smile. Menu is short but versatile. There is a great wine list with many Greek labels to choose from and some craft beers. Reservations are recommended if you want to visit during busy times.

I usually do not give 5 stars. But this place has charmed me so much.. From the excellent, professional yet cozy service, the great views, the amazing tastes of modern Greek cuisine, to the typical of actually following covid guidance and keeping distances and wearing masks (not on chin... but as it should be). And prices? More than average but perfectly reasonable for the quality of food and service! Try the beef filet, it melts in your mouth.. And strawberry millefeuil! What a taste! An instant must and one of my favourites! Kudos to great, friendly and yet so professional service of all 3 young waiters (2 boys 1 girl)! Thank you for the experience!

Highly recommended local restaurant in Kea Island. Original Greek recipes, fresh and tasty food. Staff is multilingual and very helpful with the order. Location is the center of Ioulida’s village , not so easy to locate it because of the steps you have to take over there. There is no parking lot near the area .
