Cartagena District

Cartagena is a port city on Colombia’s Caribbean coast. By the sea is the walled Old Town, founded in the 16th century, with squares, cobblestone streets and colorful colonial buildings. With a tropical climate, the city is also a popular beach destination. Reachable by boat are Isla de Barú, with white-sand beaches and palm trees, and the Islas del Rosario, known for their coral reefs.

San Felipe de Barajas Fort

Mentioned on
Historical landmark
Sights & Landmarks
The Castillo de San Felipe de Barajas was built in the 1600s as one of Spain's greatest hilltop fortress complexes. It is still an impressive structure, with a complex tunnel system and stunning views. The fortress is also home to audio tours that allow visitors to learn more about the history of the site.
Very cool place. Admission is only 25,000 pesos ($6.25 USD) and you’ll spend about an hour walking around and enjoying the scenery. Like others have said, wear sunscreen if you’re out during the sunny part of the day.

Nice stop first thing in the morning. We started our day here, trying to beat the heat. Very impressive fort built atop the hill. Steep walk up the ramps to the top of the hill. If you can get a tour guide, lots of information on the history of and importance of this fort. There are a couple of tunnels and walkways to go down as you explore your way around the fort.

Bueno... Mejor preguntar... (Translated by Google) Well... The commercial name is castle but once there the first thing they clarify is that it is a fortress and yes, you start walking through tunnels and dungeons and if it is a fortress, many places are very well preserved or remodeled and it is very nice to know the history and be there, it is worth the visit, if you can do it early when the temperature is more pleasant much better. The views are very good and the income is just under 30,000. I went with my parents and, being over 62 years old, they did not pay. Better ask...

If you love ancient architecture and history, this is a great place to visit in Cartagena. I purchased a ticket and wandered on my own through the castle, but I noticed there were many people with guides if that's more your thing. I recommend buying some water before you go in because you won't get another chance until you get to the store at the top of the castle that supports a local school for underprivileged kids in the Gethsemane neighborhood. There are great views of the city from the castle and many photo ops. The only downside of my visit was the two cruise ships that offloaded passengers right about the time I arrived, so it was crowded. There was a delightful man dressed in historic costume playing a trumpet who was extremely grateful for a small tip for enjoying the music. A dollar goes a long way for him.

San Felipe is a must-see for anybody in Cartegena hands down. The architecture and the sheer size and just the strength of this entire place is absolutely amazing to see. The fact that you are in a place that is almost 700 years old is also amazing. Don't miss it!
Steve Dempsey — Google review
Must visit castle at Cartagena. The views of the city are outstanding, while heritage is well preserved. The tour takes about an hour long, and there are cool tunnels on the way. Street vendors could be somewhat annoying.
Jose Pablo Garc?a — Google review
I strongly advice not to waist your money and time here. Specially don’t come if the heat and sun are too strong. If you really feel you want to visit this place I would come very early or at sunset. The line to buy the tickets its usually long and slow but the worst part is the hundreds of street vendors trying to sell you and umbrella, a hat or water. They will be very very pushy and annoying. If you are already here you must have: a hat, big bottle of water and maybe they will ignore you. The ticket is not super expensive but the views are not cool, the museography is non existent, there are no tours unless you paid for private ones and the view from the top is super boring. This fort is more of you explore and google if you have questions. There are a couple of sign with information but it’s boring and not very helpful. I didn’t learn anything at the end. Skip this place and go to city and enjoy a cocktail, you will thank me later.

Touring the castle was amazing. Our tour guide Jorge did an outstanding job of explaining all the details of the castle's design and history. I would recommend this for anyone going to Cartagena

If you are into history (and you know before hand what happened in this area) then this is an interesting spot to visit. If your time in the city is short and you are not so interested in history then I recommend you skipping this spot and instead enjoy the old town streets. You will learn nothing by visiting this spot, unless you hire a private guide somewhere else . There are no historical explanations or remarks Even tho this is named as a “castle” it is actually better labeled as a fortress . This is a concrete fortress with some narrow tunnels , that’s it. Unless you are a history person the only thing to enjoy is to take some pictures at the top.I also feel that the balance of cost / entertainment is bad. Maybe more interesting than the fortress itself is the monument nearby which has a stolen coin made by the British empire to celebrate what they thought would be a victory . This one you can access for free

A very nice piece of history! It reminds me of the fort in St. Augustine, FL! A major downside, is that its not very accessible for people with disabilities. My husband has a lot of leg/foot pain from an accident several years ago, and to get to the top of the castle, you must walk up either very steep ramps, or many stairs. We rented a wheelchair for my husband, but the ramps were so steep, it was very difficult to push him up. My brother had to help, and a gentleman from New York also helped push him up one of the ramps! Obviously, we could not explore the tunnels inside the castle, because of the many stairs (which is understandable, as the fort was built many years ago, before wheelchairs, and they want to keep it as authentic as possible and in its original state), but at the same time, it would be nice to create some type of way to allow people with disabilities to explore and experience the castle in all of its beauty!

Old castle with quite a bit of history in Cartagena. Was fairly crowded when I visited. Cool tunnels to walk through to get to or come down the top level. Good panoramic view of the surrounding area. Wide open area at top level, good to wear a hat or bring an umbrella

Nestled in the heart of Cartagena, the San Felipe de Barajas Fort is an architectural gem steeped in history. As an avid traveler, I was drawn to this fortress by its rich heritage and stunning panoramic views. From the moment I stepped foot inside, I was transported back in time to an era of colonial intrigue and maritime conquest. The sheer scale of the fortifications is awe-inspiring, a testament to the ingenuity and determination of its builders. Exploring the labyrinthine tunnels and ramparts, I couldn't help but marvel at the strategic prowess that went into its design. The interactive exhibits dotted throughout the site provided valuable insights into its military significance and the stories of those who defended it. One of the highlights of my visit was ascending to the highest point of the fort, where I was rewarded with breathtaking views of Cartagena's skyline and the shimmering Caribbean Sea beyond. It's a perfect spot for photography enthusiasts or anyone simply looking to soak in the beauty of their surroundings. The staff were friendly and knowledgeable, eager to share anecdotes and answer any questions I had about the fort's history. Additionally, the well-maintained grounds and facilities ensured a comfortable and enjoyable experience for visitors of all ages. Whether you're a history buff, an architecture enthusiast, or simply someone in search of unforgettable vistas, the San Felipe de Barajas Fort is a must-visit destination in Cartagena. I can't recommend it highly enough – be sure to add it to your itinerary when exploring this vibrant city.
Elias Chelala — Google review
It is a beautiful historic place, the views are fantastic from the castle. I only wish there were more people telling the history of it not just the bus tour guides as we did not arrived with them and so you miss a lot of the interesting facts about the place. One thing to keep in mind is that the street vendors will tell you to buy water or hats before entering, but you are also able to find and buy at the top of the castle at the store.
Bobby Andrea Burke — Google review
A must visit when in Cartagena. I would recommend going here as soon as they open so that the sun is not as harsh. The tunnels and architectural importance of the castle and its capability to defend the city is worth a visit. A very rich history and a great place to spend and hr or two
Darshan Shetty — Google review
Must-see place to visit with family or friends. You can do the guided tour. Wish we had done that, it would've been more fun. But as most folks will tell you, come prepared, get water, sun glasses, hat or else you will get cooked in the sun. We did it in 35° heat and it was almost unbearable. You may find relief as you go to the top, the breeze provides some relief (only if you are unobstructed). The flag and fort background is the most photographed spot in entire Cartagena. My recommendation would be to plan your visit such that you are there for sunset. Anyways enjoy!!!
Sanj Sukerkar — Google review
It was ok, but it's not stunning... There are no signs how to walk around and the tunnels are sometimes just without light and you have no clue where to go..
Thorsten Ueberschaer — Google review
Highly recommend a tour guide, as there is nothing to explain the history of this place once there. If you’re not into history, then I would skip it. The photos are fun to take with the canons. Bring water, no shade unless your walking through the tunnel.
Jacklyn Schniepp — Google review
Interesting history but it was the view that got me good in this place. Don’t worry about souvenirs. There’s plentry of vendors in the area they accept credit cards as well as for the entrance fee here. Lots of taxis waiting outside too
Nico Samneil Salado — Google review
The best part of the castle for me was the view and the walk-around. I personally am not fond of museums and historical places, although I like to get to know the story of something when it’s a castle or something like this. There is the story spread around, there is also some kind of labyrinth inside the castle which is kind of creepy if you walk in there by yourself, it’s dark with just a few lights and some tourists walking in. I recommend if you’re looking for a different experience than usual, but not if you’re claustrophobic, lol
Higor Ramalho — Google review
Interesting history and very impressive. In great views of the city and worth coming to visit. It's massive so you can take as little or as long as you want here. I would recommend bringing water up as it's pretty hot.
Cam Harper — Google review
We walked in without tickets, just bought here. Don't need to buy into the tour guide, they have a spot up at the top called "Hospital" where they offer an informative video of the castle/fortress. PLUS a reprieve from the heat! So fun to walk around the tunnels, they're not too lengthy. Just the right amount of panic before you hit a dead end or the way out. Great way to see the entire city of Cartagena, hence why the structure is here!
Maria A. — Google review
Don’t feel bad if you run out of time to visit during your time in Cartagena. It’s cool to walk around but nothing particularly interesting to see, there are a handful of boards with info and history on the fort once you get to the top but overall wasn’t mind blowing.
Ant Wirjo — Google review
A definite visit in Cartagena to learn more about the city’s history and take in beautiful views of the city. Lots of uphill walking at the beginning, and if there’s sun then I definitely recommend a hat or umbrella. There are vendors both inside and outside of the fort selling souvenirs, and inside at the top of the fort there is a store for souvenirs and refreshments (the juice was very refreshing on the hot day that I went). This is also a stop on the chiva city tour.
Reema Azar — Google review
Amazing structure. Totally worth the visit. Definitely recommend visiting this fort (Castillo). I also recommend going to the “Hospital” they have AC there which is great because it gives you a break from the heat and also you can learn more about the history behind the fortification.

Hotel Plaza de la Trinidad is a small, laid-back hotel located in the Getsemani district of Cartagena de Indias. The rooms are small but comfortable, with some featuring balconies. The outdoor pool and breakfast are also nice touches.
Perfect lover getaway. Right in the heart of the party that is Cartagena, but the hotel is quiet, tucked around an atrium with a tiny pool that is perfect to cool off in. The rooms are small and eclectic, comfy bed, clean, great staff, a nice simple breakfast. This is not a fancy place, but it has good vibes and feels homey. Nicely decorated, lots of artwork, peaceful. Perfect location. No hot water but there is air conditioning. Would stay there again.

Everything was fine except that no one informed us that the hotel does not provide breakfast on Sunday. We had a long journey ahead of us after leaving the hotel, so this was a considerable inconvenience.

I stayed in this hotel for a couple of nights with my sister. We had a pleasant stay, the hosts are really friendly and helpful. The neighborhood is alive at night time with music, food and a lot of people. Cartagena was really hot and every time we returned to our room it was heaven to turn on the AC. The breakfast was simple but filling.

We arrived in cartagena without our luggage so we couldn't enjoy much of our stay. But the staff here at the hotel we're so friendly to help every day and try their best to help with the luggage. The breakfast was nice and the coffee......hmmm so lovely. There is a swimming pool in the centre and the hotel is near a very nice square with lots of food, music and people.
Daniel Brito — Google review
The beauty of the place is its location at the Plaza de la Trinidad which is a confluence of culture in Cartagena, Colombia. There are graffitis on the wall, and at the square close by, everybody gets together in the evening for a drink on the steps and to watch live performers or take a free zumba class on Sunday evenings. Its a great location to also walk to the old city or the nearest station. There is a vibe around this place that you'd want to be a part of.

The catholic church Santuario de San Pedro Claver is a must-see in Cartagena due to its beautiful facade and altar, housing the remains of Saint Peter Claver.
I didn't actually go inside but it's a beautiful piece of architecture just the same. Great to see and for some photo ops. Lots of shops and restaurants in the area as well. If you are walking around town this should be on your list.

The Sanctuary takes you through the history of San Pedro Claver who dedicated most of his life to evangelizing slaves in Cartagena during the 1600’s. He was canonized as a saint in 1888 by Pope Leo XIII. You can spend a good hour or so touring the church, garden, artwork, and the rooms where Claver lived and worked. Highly recommend a visit if you’re in Cartagena.
Jay Clemmey — Google review

Olivaldo Lima — Google review
The church of the Santuario de San Pedro Claver (1580-1654) in Cartagena, Colombia, was constructed of limestone brought from nearby Isla de Tierra Bomba. Originally a Jesuit church, it suffered serious damage during the republican upheavals of the mid 19th century. The remains of Catholic saint San Pedro Claver are beneath the high altar. The rose window depicts the Jesuit saint preaching to black slaves. The Oratorio contains a painting of Claver, the "Slave of slaves forever", of his death bed surrounded by black converts. Claver has been called the "Patron of Human Rights" for his work evangelizing the enslaved Africans of New Granada.
David Stanley — Google review
Check the opening time before you go. On the day when we were there the church was closed until the evening, so unfortunately I didn't get to see it inside. Enjoyed watching the busy and lively area surrounding it.

Richard Schagrin — Google review
I have not gone to inside I so sorry for this ... The structure is great
Rojen Bajeryan — Google review
This is the church of San Pedro Claver de Cartagena. A Spanish priest Pedro Claver came to Columbia during the building of the fort. The fort was built by thousands of slaves shipped here by the Spanish. Pedro was appalled by their treatment and moved to help them. He dedicated the rest of his life to ministering to the slaves. He called himself “a slave to the slaves”. He is highly revered and the church conferred sainthood on Pedro in the 1800s. The church is beautiful. There are lovely stained glass windows. San Pedro himself is entombed in the altar in a glass coffin. The side rooms contain many wonderful paintings and carved statues. In the center courtyard, there large trees and plantings. It is a working Catholic Church and you can attend mass there.

Cuba 1940 - Plaza San Diego is a fantastic destination for a lively, cheerful salsa night with kids. The ambiance, female vocalist and music are amazing. The cuisine is decent, yet it appears to be too costly for its quality. Even the bottle service can be pricey despite being worth every penny.
Great restaurant, the food is great, the drinks taste good, and the music is good. What else can you ask for?

The music The vibe The Female Singer Are spectacular.... It's a perfect place for a happy, live , salsa night even if you have kids. The food is good, but I honestly think it's overpriced for what it is. The bottle service is expensive too. Worth it I guess. But it could be pricey.
Isa - Cat S - V. — Google review
To be honest, not worth it at all. The food tasted like it was old, the music inside was way too loud. There were no more empanadas, which is weird because it’s one of their most famous plates. The food was not fresh and was badly presented. Completely disappointed. Oh, not to forget that it’s completely overpriced. Not worth it!!

Awesome food, great energy! The staff was very friendly. The bartenders worked their butts off all night. The live music was energetic and the place was full of good vibes. Definitely worth a return visit!

This place is amazing. A must visit if you’re in Cartagena. We initially went here to find live music, and we found that and more. Service was incredible, everyone was super friendly and fast. Upon recommendation from the bartender we had a traditional and a spicy mojito. Both strong and delicious. The live music was breathtaking, the band was perfect. It felt like a very special concert. Ambience is very nice, no AC but we were very comfortable regardless. We ordered the seafood dish to share and it was delicious. So fresh and so many flavors. The Ropa Vieja empanadas were also incredible, try them with their spicy sauce, delicious. Owner came to say hi and we had a good chat. Very special night! Thank you so so much for everything. Btw, there’s a pool under the stage. It took me a minute to find out, ha!

Stopped by looking for a particular beer. While they did not have the beer we were looking for, the staff was very helpful. A waiter even took us outside and pointed to where we could find the brand I was looking for. The interior was beyond cool with a pool! I wish now we would have eaten there.

This place was the most fun out of all the bar/restaurants we went to. They have live music at night. If you like Cigars they have a bar that feels private up stairs you can smoke one. The staff where in a good time all 3 times we went. They serve strong drinks there. Look what we where doing. When we showed up there was a lady dancing in the pool for her man, He was taking pictures and blowing her kisses(strong drinks:•) Great place, I highly recommend it.

La Cevichería is a Cartagena restaurant that specializes in seafood dishes, including rice, pasta and soups. The no-frills eatery is popular with visitors because of its excellent ceviche.
Awesome food, great cocktails, excellent value and amazing service! We were so lucky to get there a half an hour before they were scheduled to open only to find they were opening a bit early and scored an amazing table outside. The line-up was already forming 15 minutes after they opened. And for good reason. All of the ceviches we had were outstanding...we all had a different favourite. The coconut lemonade with rum was absolutely delicious, and service from Rafael was second to none. What a great server and beautiful human. Shout out to Karina and Sandra for warm kindness and excellent service as well. This will be on the top of our list when we return to Cartagena.

All the food was delicious and flavourful. The portions are quite large so don’t over order. The staff were helpful with suggesting food and wine pairings. Reservations are recommended. The only negative was the restaurant was quite small so the tables are quite close together. I understand that they’re trying to fit as many tables as they can. It’s not an issue unless you can a noisy or pushing neighbour.

Nestled in the heart of Cartagena, La Cevichería is a culinary gem that seafood enthusiasts simply cannot afford to miss. From the moment you step foot inside, you're greeted with a vibrant atmosphere that sets the stage for an unforgettable dining experience. The menu at La Cevichería boasts an impressive selection of ceviche, showcasing the freshest catch of the day expertly prepared with a tantalizing blend of spices and flavors. Whether you're a fan of classic ceviche or prefer a more adventurous twist, there's something here to satisfy every palate. During my recent visit, I had the pleasure of trying their signature mixed seafood ceviche, and it was nothing short of exceptional. Each bite burst with the perfect balance of acidity, freshness, and seafood goodness, leaving me craving for more. In addition to their stellar ceviche offerings, La Cevichería also impresses with its friendly and attentive service. The staff members are knowledgeable and passionate about their craft, and they go above and beyond to ensure that every guest has a memorable dining experience. Whether you're a seafood aficionado or simply looking to indulge in some delicious fare during your time in Cartagena, I wholeheartedly recommend paying a visit to La Cevichería. Trust me; your taste buds will thank you later!

Wonderful place in the heart of Cartagena’s colonial old town. The food is absolutely delicious. We started with great Mexican-style Ceviche and a fantastic Paella that was prepared in a manner that throws shade on 99.9% of Spanish restaurants. The great Caribbean seafood helped tremendously. The staff was very kind and attentive and all drinks were great. Greetings from the kitchen of homemade potato chips began the night while various street artists rotated around the restaurant to enrich the atmosphere throughout.
El Patron — Google review
I embarked on a journey to La Cevicheria, a famed establishment that has captured the attention of many. I was eager to delve into a tapestry of flavors that this coastal gem promised. Alas, my experience at La Cevicheria was a tale of highs and lows, with moments of delight tempered by moments of culinary disappointment. While the promise of ceviche was certainly enticing, I found myself underwhelmed by the offerings on my plate. The ceviche Douglas (shrimp in mango sauce) was my least favorite, as the flavors failed to resonate and create the anticipated burst of taste. The regular shrimp ceviche, unfortunately, lacked the vibrancy of flavor that I had hoped for, leaving me craving more. In contrast, the pulpo en salsa de mani (grilled octopus glazed with peanut sauce) was a high in the valley of lows, infusing the palate with its rich and tantalizing notes. The combination ceviche (drenched in a coconut and limon sauce) offered a tastier option than its counterparts, with flavors that stood out in the midst of an otherwise mediocre tasting experience. Regrettably, my overall impression of La Cevicheria was one of disappointment. While the refreshing cocktails provided a pleasant diversion, they could not salvage the food experience. The lack of flavor in some of the dishes and the overall forgettable nature of the meal left me yearning for the vibrant culinary sensations that Cartagena is renowned for. As much as I wished to be enchanted by the ceviches, the mediocrity of the flavors failed to ignite my palate. With so many exceptional dining experiences to be had in this city, I would be hard-pressed to recommend La Cevicheria as a must-visit destination. The wait and time invested would be better allocated to exploring the myriad other culinary gems that Cartagena has to offer
Gladys Leyva — Google review
The decor in this restaurant was cute but the food was really not that good. Like many other reviews, the ceviche was bland and the shrimp almost had no flavours. Seafood paella was a huge miss. The rice was extremely undercooked and the flavours were off. The seafood didn’t feel fresh either.

Food poisoning! We were up sick all night and most of the next day. You will need to make reservations to eat here. I recommend asking for a table inside to avoid the street beggars and performers. You’ll have a much more enjoyable dining experience. The pescado ceviche has a delicious mango sauce. The chocolate lava cake was amazing. My server was incredibly cool and I overtipped him because of his outstanding service.

Best ceviche I’ve ever had! So fresh!! Cannot recommend the good enough. Had to take away a star as the service was below average as the waiter was not attentive at all. Nevertheless, the food was delicious and the outdoor seating was lovely.

I have seen this restaurant on TV so many times. So this had to be one of the places I had to go to in Cartagena and boy does it live up to the hype. The shrimp ceviche with lemon and orange was so refreshing. After that I got the lobster pallea for two and definitely delicious and definitely for two even three. My one advice get here early it feels up pretty quickly.
Rigo Romero — Google review
As with most places that Anthony Bourdain touches, expect a long line before this place even opens. We queued up 15-20 minutes before it opened. Within a few minutes, the line was already around the block. And it was all foreigners (including us). I become dubious of a place when the place is full of non-locals and they are selling merchandise. Oh well. Such is the draw of Bourdain. That said though, we were there for the ceviche. We got a combination of ceviche so we can try different things. The seafood was definitely fresh. We also had a ceviche that was coconut based, which was also quite good. Ask your server for recommendations, they all speak english so you there's no problem talking to them. For 2 people, a combo ceviche, coconut ceviche might be enough. We were still kinda hungry so we ordered a grilled shrimp. What a mistake that was. The shrimp was so sad, and it really wasn't even grilled. Wished we just stuck with the ceviche. For parties of 3-4, get the lobster rice. The table next to us got it and it smelled so good. Overall, food was good. Stick to the ceviche and you'll be fine. If i had to wait for more than an hour, i don't think it would be worth it. There's plenty of restaurants in Cartagena that also serves fresh ceviche.

Truly impressed by this restaurant. The menu is extensive and it was hard to know what to pick with all the amazing options. So many varieties of ceviche, tartare, rice dishes, sandwiches and more. The setting is very cute with lovely decor and a lively open kitchen. The service was also fantastic. We had a mixed ceviche with shrimp, squid and white fish in coconut milk, lime, herbs and spices. It was absolutely fantastic. One of the best ceviches I have ever had. We then had a mixed fish and vegetable rice dish and a shrimp, mango and garlic butter sandwich. Both were also amazing! They also have a great drinks menu with good cocktails and a great wine selection. I highly recommend this place!

You got to love it!! I made a quick stop for some appetizers and I ordered the shrimp with garlic and octopus with Mani and I love it; the artisan beer was also really good. Service and atmosphere excellent

Decent food, wonderful service, but bad atmosphere. The outside seating will get you harassed by vendors every 5-10 minutes… it was never ending. Would recommend sitting inside instead. Would not recommend the vietnamese rice - it was not bad but not amazing. Fish sandwich was good and gambas al ajillo were also good but not amazing.
Saif Billah — Google review
Disappointing! Other reviews discribe it very well..The quality is definitely there anymore. Taste is plain. Just a lot of lemon, overwhelming. Too bitter and sour. I’ve tried 3 dishes and they were all disappointing. Coconut ceviche was overall plain..Overpriced and service is not too attentive either. Spend your money somewhere else..!
Robin van der Zijden — Google review
Outdoor seating is a double edge sword here because you get some nice views while eating but it’s true that peddlers will badger you to death here. Food is good but I’ve had comparable ceviche in a lot of other restaurants in Cartagena so I’m not sure why I’d prioritize this place. Overall decent experience if you want to check it out.
Rovik Robert — Google review
We went here on vacation in Cartagena and it was a decent place. The main seating is outside but it wasn’t as pleasant because merchants interrupt our friend dinner frequently which lowers the vibe factor. The food was fresh seafood but it wasn’t super amazing in my opinion. I would try different dishes to see if that makes a difference. Service was okay but I didn’t appreciate the server offering a dish that we didn’t order in replacement of the dish we actually ordered. Please note the shared for two dishes is more like four people because they were huge portions. Overall, it was okay but not my favorite meal from restaurants in Cartagena.
Brian Copes — Google review
The service, food, and staff at this establishment were exceptional. We had a wonderful experience, with everyone from the security personnel to our waitress Lina and Lucelis, the bartender Leonardo, and the manager Hugo being extremely friendly and attentive. This place is truly a fantastic option for dining.

The food was delicious! Ceviche is, of course, a ‘must’ here, and you will not be disappointed. The staff are friendly, polite and professional. The restaurant gets quite crowded and they do not take reservations, so you might have to wait for a table, but it is worth it. Keep in mind it is a seafood restaurant without many other options (only several meals without seafood are available).

Colombian restaurant
Restaurant
La Cocina de Pepina is a Colombian restaurant in Getsemani, Cartagena that serves traditional fare such as stews and empanadas, plus beer and coffee. The restaurant is popular with locals for its fusion of Colombian and Caribbean cuisine. Reservations are possible but it's best to get there early in the evening to ensure a table.
This place was hands down my favourite restaurant in Cartagena. I ate here multiple times during my visit. The chef is amazing and the staff so friendly. Felt like an authentic home cooked Colombian meal every time! So delicious and fresh. It’s a MUST try!

We loved this place! Absolute best ceviche ever. We couldn’t get enough of the sauce. Everything we had was so good. This was one of our favorite casual meals. It’s pretty small so our group of 7 has to split into 2 tables, but it was worth it.

This is my go to place for Colombian food in Cartagena! The owner is super friendly and best of all the food is reasonably priced. Great value and great ambiance! I absolutely LOVE the location of this restaurant, which is nestled in the Getsemani neighborhood. Great arts scene nearby!

Seriously fantastic food, highly recommended going to this place. The food looks simple at first but the flavors are so freaking good. It has a great unassuming and cozy vibe too. So glad I read the reviews and went to this place, best meal I’ve had in Colombia.

Loved the atmosphere and service was great! Food was good quality, but the star of the night was the Mote de Queso. You HAVE to get it!! Get the full portion, it’s amazing with coconut rice :)

Visited this place with 4 friends. It's a small restaurant with a nice vibe. Food is good. I ordered the Copa SiI Si Si. The prawns and fish portions were generous. Would have loved to try the flan but they were out of desserts by the time we visited.

Tried the 6 appetiser taster and had a freshly cooked warm flan to end the meal. The food has been the best meal we have had in Colombia and the staff are very attentive and welcoming. Would recommend to anyone coming to Cartagena.

Service ✅ great , super kind ( they don’t speak a lot of English) but the menu is in English 😄 Food ! Wowowowowow amazing new Flavours! It’s new everything is like author food! Authentic and DELICIOUS! The place 🤩 wow the ambiance is cosy and makes you feel at grandma house, with comfort environment. The decor is very interesting, love the plates and the chairs! It’s a good experience to eat here! 🙌🏽 we love it

No frills restaurant with delicious homey food. Service was quick, and the place was low-key. We had the fried fish and fish filet. Both were good and were accompanied by rice, patacones, and salad. I would come here again as I like to keep it good and simple. Stars are based on flavour and simplicity in this unassuming little gem.

This was hands-down, the best place we ate in Cartagena the entire week we stayed there. We loved it so much we came back a second time. Every single thing we had on the menu was absolutely delicious. It’s like eating your grandma‘s comfort food. The service is also excellent. Highly recommend!

Cocktails are delicious, refreshing, and unique. The Mojito Jala'o is an instant hit! we had chicharrón and bolitas de nieve as appetizers: yum! And the calderete de camarones is delicious and filling. Highly recommended.

Came here for lunch on a blazing hot day and was surprised to learn the restaurant was running on no ventilation and lighting due to some works nearby. Was expecting at least a battery operated fan or something but the whole atmosphere was severely stifling. Staff were unapologetic and borderline rude sometimes, and there were lots of dishes not available during lunch. Seafood soup is admittedly good but not enough for me to come back.
Rovik Robert — Google review
Cute little restaurant that serves Colombian cuisine with 6 tables only. Recommend the Copa Si Si Si and soups!! They give generous amounts of fish and shrimp! Chicharron was disappointing and the pork was stinky. Pricey for what they’re offering.
Christina — Google review
Small little place with local food that’s out of this world! The staff is so friendly! The atmosphere was more of a local setting which I always prefer and adore! There is always a line of people wanting to eat there. Reservations are highly recommended!
Tamara L. — Google review
This was my least fav meal of my stay, the beef had a strange smell and a after taste, the fish was pretty good but small and wasn’t the fish we expected to receive since being here in Colombia. I did enjoy the balls filled with yuca & plantains as an appetizer, very small spot with 6 tables, so try to beat the crowds. I had high hopes since I read so many positive reviews, but it wasn’t my experience, the waiter was nice helpful, but he never came to check up on us after delivering the food.

Bar
Restaurant
Demente is a funky and up-and-coming bar in Getsemaní, on a corner of the Plaza de la Trinidad. It features reclaimed wooden tables and chairs, a serious rum cellar, Cuban cigars, and hints of weathered Havana. It's popular with cultured types who like to relax in an outside rocking chair and enjoy cocktails made with ingredients like green mango daiquiri and madre sucia. The friendly staff create delicious versions of signature drinks.
Cool spot right off the main plaza in Getsemani. Really cool vibe with delicious tapas, possibly the best tuna tartare I’ve ever had in my life. The drinks are great too! We were able to walk in without a reservation. Highly recommend to those visiting the neighborhood.

Lovely backyard! The waiter first wanted us to sit in the bar (probably to attract more people from the street), but make sure you ask to sit in the back. Food was okay the beer was cold.

Enjoyed this place for a few drinks and even had a pizza there one night. The Cuba Libres are fantastic. Not for anybody who’s on a budget type trip can be a little expensive.

We stumbled into this place last night without any expectation, except that we wanted a beer. And we got so much more! We sat at the bar although the outside is super cool. So don’t miss the back area. The bartender and all of the staff were so nice, friendly, chatty, and fun. The bartender let us give suggestions for music and we traded songs, sharing musical tastes and laughs without sharing the same language. It really was a magical evening! I’ll definitely come back next time I’m in Cartagena!

Great food and service. Pizza and drinks are tasty. Very laid back atmosphere but attentive to service. I personally really like their Mezcalote cocktail. Their margarita and zucchini pizzas were both good. Lots of entertainment out front in the square.

Did not get a chance to eat here due to completely wrong Google information. I had planned my whole sightseeing day around having tapas lunch here. On Google it said they opened at 1pm. At 1.30pm I could not find the entrance of where it was supposed to be indicated on Google maps and I thinking walked into someone’s living room. After asking around I was told the restaurant is somewhere else. When I got there they said they will open at 2pm and they would only start serving tapas at 5pm. So, I left angrily! All this can be fixed by just updating the Google information!

Excellent pizza restaurant in the center of Getsemaní. A great decoration that plays magnificent with the light of the rooms and the decorations of the bottles of rum, tequila, aguardiente, whiskey and others. In the inside room you have an open roof saloon where you can see how they do your pizza and who it comes fast from the artisanal oven to your table. Recommended 100% the tamarindo cocktail with mezcal and the lulo cocktail with mezcal. Excellent options. To eat the spinach pizza was my favorite.

Wow! Demente is such a cool spot. Great food and delicious cocktails! It’s perfect for a meal after sight seeing and looking at art in Getsemaní. I can’t stop thinking about the pork belly watermelon dish.

Tapas was so good and reasonable at about $10usd per plate (tuna tartar😋). Cocktails also delicious and my son loved the lemonade. The restaurant is right on the corner so you feel the music and energy from outside adding to the ambiance. The retractable roof on the restaurant is cool.

We ended up here thanks to a recommendation and why not a new place is an experimentation. I would have to say the night had a bit of frustration, well the food wasn’t why I expected didn’t meet my expectation. Don’t get me wrong, please, you have a variety of dishes from seafood to pizza with loads of cheese. Staff is wonderful and actually quite fun, just make sure to ask a few times for a table even if they say they have none. If you fancy a beer on tap, well make sure to find this place on the map. The music is extremely loud, not a place for a nap, and the price is fairly reasonable not a tourist trap.

Great food & service. We got the margarita pizza, shishito peppers, meat ball , shrimp dumplings & plenty of drinks. The margarita pizza & shishito peppers were perfect. The shrimp dumplings were very different. It reminded me of a ravioli. Overall great experience.

! Que rico! Delicious good; fast service; good beer and drinks selection. We got there early and the service was fast and friendly and remained so even as the place became packed. Food portions were small but more than compensated with quality. Tuna tartare was tasty, and the "French Onion Soup" pizza hit all the right notes, as they say. The grilled green peppers were good, but not great. I wished they had been smokier and more burnt, as well as saltier and more picante. The mango margarita's mango flavour was subtile, so to speak. It seemed like I could only taste it through the powers of suggestion. Finally grilled octopus was fantastic. Expertly grilled texture, which is easier said than done.

Celele is a new, innovative caribbean restaurant that has quickly become one of the top 50 restaurants in Latin America. Not only has it ranked highly on various review sites, but Celele is also known for its culture-rich cuisine which blends Spanish, African, Syrian, Lebanese and indigenous influences. The chefs have pioneered a unique food culture through Celele's rotating seasonal menu.
Absolutely hands down the best meal we've had in Colombia within the past 2 weeks. Strangely it hadn't come up on any searches I had done for the best restaurants in town. But I had stumbled across it, and then got a really good recommendation from someone. So we managed to get a table, and it did not disappoint! Amazing staff, very attentive but we didn't feel rushed at all. Cocktails were delicious.. And we had 3 courses. All of which were beautiful and also delicious! Our favourite was the chocolate dessert.. Oh my days, it was absolutely stunning. EASILY the beat restaurant in cartagena. Don't miss out! Also even if bookings aren't available on their website, do get in contact as they had some cancellations 😊

Delicious food and beautiful dishes. The food for me was like a fusion of afro Caribbean Colombian cuisine, so 90% of the time I wasn’t sure what I was ordering or tasting but it tasted really good. The prices are good for the food portions. The interior design is simple but nice. Every dish comes with the history of how or why it was cooked in that way. The staff was really helpful explaining the dishes and describing what things were in case you didn’t understand the food. My only negative comment is that the service is very very slow. Also, don’t forget to make a reservation because it gets really crowded !
Gerardo Guerrero — Google review
We booked a second reservation here as we finished our first meal. We had to have a second round and order everything we didn’t get the first time! A stunning display of innovation with taste, presentation, and local representation. Highly recommend. This restaurant was absolutely the highlight of our trip to Cartagena. And the servers, especially Juan - top notch! We love you all!

What to say about the food? This is the best place I’ve experienced in Columbia. The drinks options are also quite incredible. All the courses we took were tasty and super original. The service was good but a bit slow - something to improve! But worth the wait! I would go back without hesitation

Celele has been ranking as one of the top 50 restaurants in South America for 4 years in a row so we were excited to check them out to visit them during our visit to Cartagena. Luckily we were able to secure a reservation (they were booked for weeks out) and they do require a credit card during the reservation. They recommend two appetizers and two main dishes and dessert between two people but we were so excited that got 3 main dishes! Everything tasted amazing and also the cocktails were tasty and refreshing (we got 4). Definitely try to secure a reservation and come hungry!

Our dinner at Celele was absolutely outstanding. In terms of fine dining and gastronomy, Celele is the best in Colombia (better than El Cielo in Medellin). The dishes were stunning and the flavors took us on adventures. I appreciated the use of local and authentic ingredients. The staff was wonderful and the overall vibe was just perfect.

A Top 50 restaurants of the world, visited for a late dinner after making reservations. Great ambience and service. The cocktails were excellent. The service was detailed. The Salad of Flowers was the best part, presentation and taste. The prawn tartare was okay, I would have probably preferred something else. The main course of Pork Confit was different and had a unique taste. The crushed and cooked pulses added a different flavor. Overall a great experience and nice restaurant.

Wonderful experience at this restaurant. Waiting time was a bit longer than expected but so worth it. Our server was very kind and he explained every single plate that they served us, where the food came from and how it was made. They serve local and seasonal food. We got full course menu: entree, main and dessert. All the plates are colorful, exotic and full of different textures and flavors. The restaurant is small but comfy and prices are according to Cartagena's standard. Make sure you enjoy every single bite!

One of the best restaurants experiences I've had in my life. Food was amazing, from the attention to detail taken in the preparation and presentation, the explanation of the combinations used in the unique parings, and the way everything tasted. Definitely something you want to try if you can get a reservation. I can't wait to go back.

We came to Celele in on a recommendation and were blown away! The restaurant has a warm ambiance and colorful decor. The flower salad, with its mix of flowers and cashews, was a delightful start. We then shared the signature pork dish, impressing us with its presentation and flavors. The staff were incredibly accommodating, helpful and contributed to a memorable dining experience. It’s no exaggeration to say that this was the best dining experience I’ve had in Colombia so far!

Every dish was a multilayered masterpiece both in terms of presentation and fine flavours and textures. We had crab, flower salad, beef tongue, goat stew and coconut sorbet for dessert. It's impossible to pick favorites. Also, very friendly service and a relaxed atmosphere made this the most memorable dinner during our 3 weeks trip to Colombia.
Dmitry Dolinsky — Google review
I think I expected a bit too much from the existing reviews. First of all, the presentation for almost every dish was AMAZING (definitely points for the flower salad and smoked fish with arab spices). The crab dish was quite good as well, but I would’ve preferred for the dish to let the freshness of the crab shine through, as well as to eat it “deconstructed” as opposed to the recommended way. The main issue was that the taste wasn’t quite there; it seemed the bulk of the effort went to the actual visuals and plating itself instead of the flavors. I found the beef tongue and pork to be mediocre, though these are apparently ordered the most, but perhaps the goat or something else more unique would’ve fared better. Definitely worth a visit, but be prepared to have your eyes more satisfied than your stomach… Note: - portions are more filling than they seem! - our server Luis was super kind :)

Cute little restaurant in Gestamani. We enjoyed the appetizers more than the entrees or the desserts. The corn buns were excellent. Most of the food was unlike anything we had eaten before and presented like a work of art. The cashew salad was excellent and we were explained each course and how to eat it when it was served. A great experience
Sakina Huzefa — Google review
This isn't a mere restaurant, each dish on the tasting course is a work of art. The chef is apparently famous and constantly innovates incorporating local ingredients into explosions of flavour. Prices are very reasonable for top quality gastronomy. Service is also immaculate and accommodating. Would consider flying 25 hours across the world again to experience Celele again!

Just magnificent. The flower salad, the pork terrine, the burrata, the squid/mussels were all some of the most unique and inventive dishes I've ever had. The beef tongue pastrami was a slight miss due to the dominant sauce they paired with it. The flan was superb. The cocktails were fantastic. The server was great. Loved this experience.

Wow! I am a vegetarian and I have never experienced such a firework of different flavors with the interesting and never heard/seen combinations of foods/herb in my mouth! I was blown away! This was such a memorable meal maybe because I shared it with someone special but also because the experience was just lovely. First, loved the atmosphere. Vibrant and lots of colors but calming and relaxing at the same time. It’s a smaller space so felt intimate as well. Second, the apps were some of the best I’ve had ever. Appreciated the creativity and mix of textures. Clearly so much thought and love put into the menu. Third, service friendly! They gave a nice, short intro for each dish and checked in appropriately. This restaurant def landed in my top list of restaurants in general and I plan to recommend repeatedly! Thanks for a great time
Catherine P — Google review
I was really excited to try this once top-rated restaurant but I was reminded why it fell far from grace. First, they make you wait outside of a locked door until the exact time of your reservation. If you're early, you wait outside like a scolded dog. The drink menu was outdated and they gave a separate cocktail menu for the drinks they currently had. Sadly, the drink I ordered was not that good. The food was not any better as it seemed that the restaurant was more fixated on being different, and creative and highlighting Colombian flavors than they were in proper texture, flavor profiles, and balance. The flavors were very well developed and the plating was superb. The staff was very friendly and knowledgeable.
Manuel Aguilar — Google review
We are speechless! The food was excellent, and probably the best we have ever had abroad. Going to Celele is definitely a gastronomic experience. Everything is made with local, natural and fresh ingredients and all the plates are extremely creative and imaginative. The waiters are kind, polite and helpful, and it’s a place where if you are not a native or Spanish speaker, they will accommodate you by speaking English. Highly highly recommend, it is not to be missed! I would love to revisit in the future.

If you love seafood, then Mar y Zielo is the perfect spot for you. This restaurant borrows influences from chef Mariano Cernos homeland of Peru, with dishes that use local Colombian ingredients. The beautiful decor and stage make it perfect for a night out with your friends, and the punch-sized portions make it an ideal choice for groups.
Fine dining at its best. Located within the walled city, the restaurant and its ambiance is an experience in itself. The food, not only looks beautiful, it is absolutely delicious! A must in Cartagena if you enjoy great food and dining.

Alright friends, 🗣️GET INTO IT! This restaurant has been the IT girl of my Cartagena trip so far. Great complimentary bread, amazing atmosphere on the rooftop, and the food is 10/10. Bonus- they gave our table free mini wine drinks for Women’s Day 🥳 Luis was our server and he catered so well to us! Also, the building as a whole is just gorgeous. The bathrooms are pretty small but still very pretty and architecturally different from any I’ve been in thus far. Definitely check it out! NOTE: They do charge for water but in USD it’s only about $4/person, at least for us.

A 5 star restaurant! First impressions are immediately good, with the great decor and friendly staff. The menu is not extensive and that is good as it focus on the Colombian ingredients, and it becomes the stars of each place. We ate the catch of the day, the ceviche, and the fish croquetas and everything was amazingly seasoned and tasty. It was my wife’s birthday and staff were very warming with a beautiful happy birthday ice cream desert. We really enjoyed this rooftop experience, besides the food, the music and the vibe was spot on!

This place is an unknown Gem! Amazing food great service and the space is so beautiful and relaxing!! So glad I found it the last night with friends! If you have a larger party 5+ then you need a reservation but 4 or less we could do a walk in. I had the crab croquette best I have EVER had!! Then for main I had the Titote Mar Y Terra (pork belly squid, and shrimp) kind of like an Asian flavor but the squid had it the day before and was so chewy this was like scallops!! Our server was so great and gave recommendations and so kind even brought us a special dessert from the chief! For dessert we had the cookie dessert!

Had a really great time at Mar y Zielo. Our waiter, Alex, took service to the next level. He did so by answering our questions beyond expectation and, if needed, by bringing other colleagues with the knowledge. The cocktails were all a home run. All had a great balance, but one certainly stood out; Rosa. Unique with smokey but fresh tones. A must try, even if you don't like mezcal and/or tequila (like myself). The food was outstanding, too. All food is really well balanced. Their own twist to the 'Surf&Turf' is deliciousand stood out. The venue is beautiful. From entrance to the bathroom. Would greatly recommend this restaurant to everybody visiting Cartagena.

Beautiful place, the house has a fantastic atmosphere, nicely decorated, food amazing. My entry was much better than my main course, I ordered “ the coconut rice with with sea food” it was not outstanding. However, everything else was exquisite. Best part was the service, our waiter Marcos was well educated and super helpful. Overall, a great experience and a must to visit while you in Cartagena

Absolutely lovely! Our service was spectacular. It started raining and within seconds the staff had pulled out the rain cover and had secondary tables ready for guests in case they wanted to move. Good service and atmosphere, but food left a lot to be desired. The presentation was wonderful but the food was not that special in my opinion. They were trying to do too many things with the dishes and missed the mark. Bread was good though (but the amount of butter they gave for it…)

Amazing way to spend our last meal in Colombia. Great vibes, food, music, and drinks. I love the purpose behind the chef: featuring dishes inspired by matriarchs throughout Colombia. Kilber was a fantastic service, and also an amazing photographer. He knew exactly what to do.

We sat at the bar and had the most phenomenal experience - the watermelon drink recommended by the server was delicious and had wonderful herbal end notes. The bread and dessert was also incredible. The appetizers and entrees were definitely more than above average though I wouldn't recommend the burrata. The server recommended the goat to my friend who said it was one of the best dishes they ever tried. Lesson learned to just ask the server for recs!

Visited this restaurant during my vacation to Cartagena and it was good. Our appetizers were amazing especially this ceviche with almost Greek style Tzatziki sauce. My main dish was light and easy. The vibe was nice with the decorations. The lighting was a little too dark but then the staff adjusted which allowed everyone to see their menus. The music was not too loud which was nice because it allowed you not to hear the table next to you. The service was okay. I think the server could have been a little more prompt for offering us a dessert menu but he eventually came over after my friend called to get his attention. Overall it was okay.

The rooftop is lovely with a nice view of the church. The service was great and the food was just amazing! In the beginning, they offered some nice focaccia bread, which was a nice introduction to the dining experience. Came there twice, and I would definitely come again.

Food was incredible and the waiters were very nice. They also are more than happy to tell you the history of the building and the food, as well as talk about its local roots. The atmosphere was great with ambient music and comfortable seating.
