San Felipe de Barajas Fort

Mentioned on
Historical landmark
Sights & Landmarks
The Castillo de San Felipe de Barajas was built in the 1600s as one of Spain's greatest hilltop fortress complexes. It is still an impressive structure, with a complex tunnel system and stunning views. The fortress is also home to audio tours that allow visitors to learn more about the history of the site.
Very cool place. Admission is only 25,000 pesos ($6.25 USD) and you’ll spend about an hour walking around and enjoying the scenery. Like others have said, wear sunscreen if you’re out during the sunny part of the day.
Jim McConville — Google review
Nice stop first thing in the morning. We started our day here, trying to beat the heat. Very impressive fort built atop the hill. Steep walk up the ramps to the top of the hill. If you can get a tour guide, lots of information on the history of and importance of this fort. There are a couple of tunnels and walkways to go down as you explore your way around the fort.

Bueno... Mejor preguntar... (Translated by Google) Well... The commercial name is castle but once there the first thing they clarify is that it is a fortress and yes, you start walking through tunnels and dungeons and if it is a fortress, many places are very well preserved or remodeled and it is very nice to know the history and be there, it is worth the visit, if you can do it early when the temperature is more pleasant much better. The views are very good and the income is just under 30,000. I went with my parents and, being over 62 years old, they did not pay. Better ask...

If you love ancient architecture and history, this is a great place to visit in Cartagena. I purchased a ticket and wandered on my own through the castle, but I noticed there were many people with guides if that's more your thing. I recommend buying some water before you go in because you won't get another chance until you get to the store at the top of the castle that supports a local school for underprivileged kids in the Gethsemane neighborhood. There are great views of the city from the castle and many photo ops. The only downside of my visit was the two cruise ships that offloaded passengers right about the time I arrived, so it was crowded. There was a delightful man dressed in historic costume playing a trumpet who was extremely grateful for a small tip for enjoying the music. A dollar goes a long way for him.
Brenda Bindschatel — Google review
San Felipe is a must-see for anybody in Cartegena hands down. The architecture and the sheer size and just the strength of this entire place is absolutely amazing to see. The fact that you are in a place that is almost 700 years old is also amazing. Don't miss it!
Steve Dempsey — Google review
Must visit castle at Cartagena. The views of the city are outstanding, while heritage is well preserved. The tour takes about an hour long, and there are cool tunnels on the way. Street vendors could be somewhat annoying.
Jose Pablo Garc?a — Google review
I strongly advice not to waist your money and time here. Specially don’t come if the heat and sun are too strong. If you really feel you want to visit this place I would come very early or at sunset. The line to buy the tickets its usually long and slow but the worst part is the hundreds of street vendors trying to sell you and umbrella, a hat or water. They will be very very pushy and annoying. If you are already here you must have: a hat, big bottle of water and maybe they will ignore you. The ticket is not super expensive but the views are not cool, the museography is non existent, there are no tours unless you paid for private ones and the view from the top is super boring. This fort is more of you explore and google if you have questions. There are a couple of sign with information but it’s boring and not very helpful. I didn’t learn anything at the end. Skip this place and go to city and enjoy a cocktail, you will thank me later.

Touring the castle was amazing. Our tour guide Jorge did an outstanding job of explaining all the details of the castle's design and history. I would recommend this for anyone going to Cartagena

If you are into history (and you know before hand what happened in this area) then this is an interesting spot to visit. If your time in the city is short and you are not so interested in history then I recommend you skipping this spot and instead enjoy the old town streets. You will learn nothing by visiting this spot, unless you hire a private guide somewhere else . There are no historical explanations or remarks Even tho this is named as a “castle” it is actually better labeled as a fortress . This is a concrete fortress with some narrow tunnels , that’s it. Unless you are a history person the only thing to enjoy is to take some pictures at the top.I also feel that the balance of cost / entertainment is bad. Maybe more interesting than the fortress itself is the monument nearby which has a stolen coin made by the British empire to celebrate what they thought would be a victory . This one you can access for free

A very nice piece of history! It reminds me of the fort in St. Augustine, FL! A major downside, is that its not very accessible for people with disabilities. My husband has a lot of leg/foot pain from an accident several years ago, and to get to the top of the castle, you must walk up either very steep ramps, or many stairs. We rented a wheelchair for my husband, but the ramps were so steep, it was very difficult to push him up. My brother had to help, and a gentleman from New York also helped push him up one of the ramps! Obviously, we could not explore the tunnels inside the castle, because of the many stairs (which is understandable, as the fort was built many years ago, before wheelchairs, and they want to keep it as authentic as possible and in its original state), but at the same time, it would be nice to create some type of way to allow people with disabilities to explore and experience the castle in all of its beauty!
Amanda Persaud — Google review
Old castle with quite a bit of history in Cartagena. Was fairly crowded when I visited. Cool tunnels to walk through to get to or come down the top level. Good panoramic view of the surrounding area. Wide open area at top level, good to wear a hat or bring an umbrella

Nestled in the heart of Cartagena, the San Felipe de Barajas Fort is an architectural gem steeped in history. As an avid traveler, I was drawn to this fortress by its rich heritage and stunning panoramic views. From the moment I stepped foot inside, I was transported back in time to an era of colonial intrigue and maritime conquest. The sheer scale of the fortifications is awe-inspiring, a testament to the ingenuity and determination of its builders. Exploring the labyrinthine tunnels and ramparts, I couldn't help but marvel at the strategic prowess that went into its design. The interactive exhibits dotted throughout the site provided valuable insights into its military significance and the stories of those who defended it. One of the highlights of my visit was ascending to the highest point of the fort, where I was rewarded with breathtaking views of Cartagena's skyline and the shimmering Caribbean Sea beyond. It's a perfect spot for photography enthusiasts or anyone simply looking to soak in the beauty of their surroundings. The staff were friendly and knowledgeable, eager to share anecdotes and answer any questions I had about the fort's history. Additionally, the well-maintained grounds and facilities ensured a comfortable and enjoyable experience for visitors of all ages. Whether you're a history buff, an architecture enthusiast, or simply someone in search of unforgettable vistas, the San Felipe de Barajas Fort is a must-visit destination in Cartagena. I can't recommend it highly enough – be sure to add it to your itinerary when exploring this vibrant city.
Elias Chelala — Google review
It is a beautiful historic place, the views are fantastic from the castle. I only wish there were more people telling the history of it not just the bus tour guides as we did not arrived with them and so you miss a lot of the interesting facts about the place. One thing to keep in mind is that the street vendors will tell you to buy water or hats before entering, but you are also able to find and buy at the top of the castle at the store.
Bobby Andrea Burke — Google review
A must visit when in Cartagena. I would recommend going here as soon as they open so that the sun is not as harsh. The tunnels and architectural importance of the castle and its capability to defend the city is worth a visit. A very rich history and a great place to spend and hr or two
Darshan Shetty — Google review
Must-see place to visit with family or friends. You can do the guided tour. Wish we had done that, it would've been more fun. But as most folks will tell you, come prepared, get water, sun glasses, hat or else you will get cooked in the sun. We did it in 35° heat and it was almost unbearable. You may find relief as you go to the top, the breeze provides some relief (only if you are unobstructed). The flag and fort background is the most photographed spot in entire Cartagena. My recommendation would be to plan your visit such that you are there for sunset. Anyways enjoy!!!
Sanj Sukerkar — Google review
It was ok, but it's not stunning... There are no signs how to walk around and the tunnels are sometimes just without light and you have no clue where to go..
Thorsten Ueberschaer — Google review
Highly recommend a tour guide, as there is nothing to explain the history of this place once there. If you’re not into history, then I would skip it. The photos are fun to take with the canons. Bring water, no shade unless your walking through the tunnel.
Jacklyn Schniepp — Google review
Interesting history but it was the view that got me good in this place. Don’t worry about souvenirs. There’s plentry of vendors in the area they accept credit cards as well as for the entrance fee here. Lots of taxis waiting outside too
Nico Samneil Salado — Google review
The best part of the castle for me was the view and the walk-around. I personally am not fond of museums and historical places, although I like to get to know the story of something when it’s a castle or something like this. There is the story spread around, there is also some kind of labyrinth inside the castle which is kind of creepy if you walk in there by yourself, it’s dark with just a few lights and some tourists walking in. I recommend if you’re looking for a different experience than usual, but not if you’re claustrophobic, lol
Higor Ramalho — Google review
Interesting history and very impressive. In great views of the city and worth coming to visit. It's massive so you can take as little or as long as you want here. I would recommend bringing water up as it's pretty hot.
Cam Harper — Google review
We walked in without tickets, just bought here. Don't need to buy into the tour guide, they have a spot up at the top called "Hospital" where they offer an informative video of the castle/fortress. PLUS a reprieve from the heat! So fun to walk around the tunnels, they're not too lengthy. Just the right amount of panic before you hit a dead end or the way out. Great way to see the entire city of Cartagena, hence why the structure is here!
Maria A. — Google review
Don’t feel bad if you run out of time to visit during your time in Cartagena. It’s cool to walk around but nothing particularly interesting to see, there are a handful of boards with info and history on the fort once you get to the top but overall wasn’t mind blowing.
Ant Wirjo — Google review
A definite visit in Cartagena to learn more about the city’s history and take in beautiful views of the city. Lots of uphill walking at the beginning, and if there’s sun then I definitely recommend a hat or umbrella. There are vendors both inside and outside of the fort selling souvenirs, and inside at the top of the fort there is a store for souvenirs and refreshments (the juice was very refreshing on the hot day that I went). This is also a stop on the chiva city tour.
Reema Azar — Google review
Amazing structure. Totally worth the visit. Definitely recommend visiting this fort (Castillo). I also recommend going to the “Hospital” they have AC there which is great because it gives you a break from the heat and also you can learn more about the history behind the fortification.

Hotel Plaza de la Trinidad is a small, laid-back hotel located in the Getsemani district of Cartagena de Indias. The rooms are small but comfortable, with some featuring balconies. The outdoor pool and breakfast are also nice touches.
Perfect lover getaway. Right in the heart of the party that is Cartagena, but the hotel is quiet, tucked around an atrium with a tiny pool that is perfect to cool off in. The rooms are small and eclectic, comfy bed, clean, great staff, a nice simple breakfast. This is not a fancy place, but it has good vibes and feels homey. Nicely decorated, lots of artwork, peaceful. Perfect location. No hot water but there is air conditioning. Would stay there again.
Jane LeCroy — Google review
Everything was fine except that no one informed us that the hotel does not provide breakfast on Sunday. We had a long journey ahead of us after leaving the hotel, so this was a considerable inconvenience.
Ireneusz Pietryka — Google review
I stayed in this hotel for a couple of nights with my sister. We had a pleasant stay, the hosts are really friendly and helpful. The neighborhood is alive at night time with music, food and a lot of people. Cartagena was really hot and every time we returned to our room it was heaven to turn on the AC. The breakfast was simple but filling.

We arrived in cartagena without our luggage so we couldn't enjoy much of our stay. But the staff here at the hotel we're so friendly to help every day and try their best to help with the luggage. The breakfast was nice and the coffee......hmmm so lovely. There is a swimming pool in the centre and the hotel is near a very nice square with lots of food, music and people.
Daniel Brito — Google review
The beauty of the place is its location at the Plaza de la Trinidad which is a confluence of culture in Cartagena, Colombia. There are graffitis on the wall, and at the square close by, everybody gets together in the evening for a drink on the steps and to watch live performers or take a free zumba class on Sunday evenings. Its a great location to also walk to the old city or the nearest station. There is a vibe around this place that you'd want to be a part of.

The catholic church Santuario de San Pedro Claver is a must-see in Cartagena due to its beautiful facade and altar, housing the remains of Saint Peter Claver.
I didn't actually go inside but it's a beautiful piece of architecture just the same. Great to see and for some photo ops. Lots of shops and restaurants in the area as well. If you are walking around town this should be on your list.

A bit more expensive for tourists but something you should go see. Very beautiful church.

Visiting here is a must for understanding a very important person in Cartagena's history, Spanish history even. Read up on the man before you go. Spend the money on the guide.

Tour guide Nestor told me of Saint Peter Claver and all of his work. I was quite impressed by this story. Beautiful architecture inside and out of the church.

The Sanctuary takes you through the history of San Pedro Claver who dedicated most of his life to evangelizing slaves in Cartagena during the 1600’s. He was canonized as a saint in 1888 by Pope Leo XIII. You can spend a good hour or so touring the church, garden, artwork, and the rooms where Claver lived and worked. Highly recommend a visit if you’re in Cartagena.
Jay Clemmey — Google review
One of the historic buildings to visit in Cartagena. You shouldn't miss it.
Olivaldo Lima — Google review
The church of the Santuario de San Pedro Claver (1580-1654) in Cartagena, Colombia, was constructed of limestone brought from nearby Isla de Tierra Bomba. Originally a Jesuit church, it suffered serious damage during the republican upheavals of the mid 19th century. The remains of Catholic saint San Pedro Claver are beneath the high altar. The rose window depicts the Jesuit saint preaching to black slaves. The Oratorio contains a painting of Claver, the "Slave of slaves forever", of his death bed surrounded by black converts. Claver has been called the "Patron of Human Rights" for his work evangelizing the enslaved Africans of New Granada.
David Stanley — Google review
Check the opening time before you go. On the day when we were there the church was closed until the evening, so unfortunately I didn't get to see it inside. Enjoyed watching the busy and lively area surrounding it.
Laelia Milleri Photography — Google review
Not sure why the church is not open to the public. They charge foreigners more, but there is no guide available at all. Would have been nice to actually know the history of the place.

A truly beautiful church with an amazing courtyard in the middle. Not your traditional church on the interior.
Richard Schagrin — Google review
I have not gone to inside I so sorry for this ... The structure is great
Rojen Bajeryan — Google review
This is the church of San Pedro Claver de Cartagena. A Spanish priest Pedro Claver came to Columbia during the building of the fort. The fort was built by thousands of slaves shipped here by the Spanish. Pedro was appalled by their treatment and moved to help them. He dedicated the rest of his life to ministering to the slaves. He called himself “a slave to the slaves”. He is highly revered and the church conferred sainthood on Pedro in the 1800s. The church is beautiful. There are lovely stained glass windows. San Pedro himself is entombed in the altar in a glass coffin. The side rooms contain many wonderful paintings and carved statues. In the center courtyard, there large trees and plantings. It is a working Catholic Church and you can attend mass there.

Cuba 1940 - Plaza San Diego is a fantastic destination for a lively, cheerful salsa night with kids. The ambiance, female vocalist and music are amazing. The cuisine is decent, yet it appears to be too costly for its quality. Even the bottle service can be pricey despite being worth every penny.

The Rum Box is a Gastropub located in Getsemaní in Cartagena, which specializes in rum. They have a good variety of cocktails and mixers as well as complementary rum with any order, making it a great spot to try some of the region's best rum.
This spot is phenomenal! We listened to the other reviews and made the trek over. Boy did it not disappoint! They welcomed us with a shot and chocolate, followed by the best food we've had in Colombia thus far. In addition to great food and drinks, the staff was so welcoming and fun. Hecmary was a great attentive serve with wonderful recommendations. We'll definitely be back before our trip is over!

Had the opportunity to eat at The Rum Box a few times on this last trip. The food, service and atmosphere was stellar. Our waitress Jessi, was very patient with us as we used our translator to order our food and converse with her. She has a wonderful spirit to serve her customers. The rum was outstanding. Prior to you receiving your food, a shot of rum is brought to your table along with some chocolate as a chaser. We went multiple times in which we ordered a number of items from the menu as the prices and value of the food were perfect. Be sure to try to the Sea Bass with Creole Onion sauce. You won’t be disappointed.

My favorite cocktail bar in Columbia. Very unique experience. They start you with chocolate and a shot of rum. Cocktails are fabulous, food is delicious and service excellent. They ended our visit with another amazing chocolate and a rose for me. Which in turn made the evening of a little local girl when I gifted it to her later. Definitely do not miss this bar!

We stumbled across this restaurant and luckily they had a table available. We had the Passion Fruit Ceviche, the Carimañolas de Queso and the Salmon. In addition to the shot of rum, we had the Rum Rouge, Coconut Cream Dream and Te killer cocktails. Everything was delicious and the cocktails were very creative! Emily and Camila took great care of us and the bartenders were exceptional as well. We are so glad we found this place and can’t wait to go back. 5 stars!

I feel like they are the most underrated place for dinner in Cartagena! The staff are so friendly and helpful. I can’t remember the name of our server but her name started with an O and she was awesome! The food was amazing so were the drinks and the live music! We also loved how they put your name on a little sign on the table. They gave us some amazing chocolates as well. But we really loved the cute flower they brought out to my girlfriend with the bill.

Had an absolutely incredible tasting with Jesus last night! We were only expecting rum and chocolates, but the tasting also included amazing tapas. The tapas came from their own restaurant and we will definitely go there as well. It was some of the best seasoned food we had ever tasted. Jesus was extremely friendly and knowledgeable and made the experience one we will never forget. Yes the tasting was pricey, but worth every penny! Definitely a MUST DO activity while in Cartagena ❤️

I loved this restaurant so much. I made a reservation online and they had a table with my name on a led light cinema box (I think that’s what those are called?). We also received two rounds of free shots of their own rum with little pieces of chocolate and explained to us where the rum came from and why it tastes better with the chocolate. The servers were the sweetest!! I think they also gave us a complimentary sweet pepper, I was so drunk I can’t really remember.

My sister and I did a rum tasting with Adrian and it was the best experience ever!  During the tasting, we tried a variety of rums paired with small bites and/or chocolate.  Adrian was very knowledgeable and answered any questions we had.  He made the rum tasting fun and it's an experience we will never forget!  We also had dinner reservations immediately after and we were lucky to have Adrian serving us.  The experience was just as exceptional as the rum tasting was!  The food was phenomenal and flavorful and Adrian provided excellent dinner recommendations and always had a smile on his face.  Most importantly, he was very personable and wanted to make sure we were enjoying our dining experience.   Thank you to the chef for delicious food and thank you Adrian for making our evening a great one!

As all the reviews say, do not miss the rum tasting. We followed suit. And they were right. Do not miss the rum tasting. Koko our bartender, was knowledgeable on her rums, generous with her pours, and striving to give the best experience possible. The staff is truly friendly. They do make you try about 9-11 different types of rum. An truly enjoyable experience. The food: completely in sync with the rum tasting experience. Catch of the day filet would just melt in your mouth. Vegetarian options available as well. Great flavors, great rum. Time and moneys worth. Will come back.

Our favourite were the passion fruit ones and the coffee ones. Our favourite restaurant in Colombia! We've been to a lot of restaurants in Bogota, Santa Marta and Cartagena, and this is the most memorable. Thank you and keep up the good work!

Wonderful atmosphere, fun aesthetic, and great service. There was some confusion about the amount to pay in Colombian pesos since we usually use USD but the staff helped us figure it out. NOTE: Everything you taste at Saborarte - Live Lula (rum tasting experience) can be purchased here. This spot is definitely a local treasure to try out!

We were very well looked after by David, Andrew and Diego. Really enjoyed the complimentary rum / chocolate tasting / padrons and they kindly provided a non alcoholic cocktail for our teenager. A fashionable seafood restaurant with a rooftop terrace in Cartagena, Buena Vida Marisquería is a popular choice for dining. The restaurant's colorful and fun ambiance, great food and occasional live music make it a favorite spot for locals and tourists alike.
Really lovely food, great tastes in a dish. The salad starter was great, as well as the creamy garlic fish & seafood. The air con was bit too cold. Fastest service I've seen so far here! Thank you, hope to come again some day :)

Very nice restaurant with great ambience and atmosphere. Has different floors to dine in and the rooftop. Great decor. It's a seafood focused cuisine. Interesting selection of drinks. The food & drink presentation was great, but it didn't taste as amazing as it looked. Something was missing, the taste was underrated. I enjoyed the rooftop, had nice vibes. Staff were attentive, courteous & accommodating. Our waiter spoke great English. The view of the rooftop is nice but not extensive. Overall definitely recommend.

The atmosphere is very nice with lighting and a bar upstairs with live music (jazz when I was there) and a very calm and peaceful environment. The staff was great and very attentive giving annorlverall excellent service experience. The food was good but my fish was very salty so that was a bit tough to manage around but when I tasted the other dishes they were delicious and that is why I took one star off. Overall a nice place to come, I would rather visit more for the ambiance and drinks.

Buena Vida Marisquería & Rooftop is a vibrant & chic restaurant & bar in the walled city. We came at night and enjoyed some delicious food and unique libations that Buena Vida offers. Inspired by the Caribbean Sea, Buena Vida Marisquería & Rooftop is known for its seafood, so of course I ordered the ceviche and it was wonderful. My favorite aspect of Buena Vida Marisquería & Rooftop is the fun drinks we ordered. One was a sharable punchbowl that our server made in front of us with flames and sparklers coming out of the box - talk about presentation. The other was a delicious fruity cocktail that came in a huge conch shell as the cup. I absolutely love it - the creativity and uniqueness definitely made Buena Vida Marisquería & Rooftop memorable for me. Buena Vida passes the vibe check with the great upbeat music they play, they offer seating outdoors at the rooftop & also indoors on the first floor, and I love how colorful the restaurant is. The view of the historic architecture is gorgeous at night. I would love to come back and visit Buena Vida Marisquería & Rooftop during the day to see the beauty of the establishment and city views in the daylight.

Buena Vida was a very good First eating experience for us on the first day we arrived in Cartagena walled city. It was recommend by Jhordan who was the concierge at our Hotel. It was delicious and did not disappoint. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND!!

Jesus was one of a kind! He really made our night with his Surprise for our anniversary. He was very kind and helpful, he recommended the crab bowl and it was delicious, I do wish the portion was bigger, my husband got the fish burger and the plantain chips, which he said he enjoyed. The upstairs seating area is nice and the rooftop is even better! Definitely recommend to travelers visiting Colombia.

We booked a reservation here because it was offered on Resy. We were sat in a table for two that was off of a catwalk and it was a tight squeeze. I ordered the grilled octopus and my husband ordered the seafood rice- both dishes were quite good. However the seating arrangement made it hard to fully enjoy the experience.

This place had a very nice ambiance and my server was very attentive. The drinks were good too. The food was underwhelming. The appetizer with the corn and shrimp was pretty good but the corn was different than what I'm used to in the states. It kinda tasted like Peruvian corn... the shrimp tacos came highly recommended but were a big disappointment for me. I didn't care for the cornmeal taste that the taco shells had and the shrimp were cold. I normally love shrimp tacos but didn't care for these. It's a very popular restaurant though. When I'm back in Cartagena again I may give them another chance.

Great spot for dinner and drinks... The service was excellent, very attentive and helpful waiters. The food was also really great... The rooftop deck had limited food options but varied enough for you to find something you'd like. Great location, good and and service definitely recommend

The food and drinks were delicious. We enjoyed the ambience. The presentations were also enjoyable. Only caveat is we didn’t appreciate being stopped right at the door and weren’t allowed to even walk inside. They asked if we had a reservation, which we didn’t, and then they confirmed there was space and let us in. True customer service is to allow the patrons to enter the establishment and do those types of verifications inside. Still giving 5 stars as I don’t want to take away their ratings since everything else was great.

TL;DR - Decent The restaurant is beautiful.  Small table count with a large communal booth seat on the main floor, fun alcove seating on the second floor, trendy light fixtures, bold colors and patterns, rooftop patio, etc.  The staff are knowledgable and friendly.  English was doable, but spanish was easier.  AC kept the area pleasant, even with the heatwave outside. We were pleasantly surprised by the food.  Everything was perfectly the mixed-grill seafood plate done save the muscles (which were cold, dry, and generally not great).  The Encocada (Caribbean seafood stew) was also delicious, coming in as a close second to the well-prepared items from the grill.  Portions aren't huge, As expected, they charge tourist prices; but ad long as you're not buying a $7 bottle of wine that's marked up to $50, then the quality makes up for the cost.

We had a great experience here! The first truly fine dining experience we could find in Cartagena for a reasonable price that was worth it. A very pleasant and relaxed atmosphere with cool breeze & DJ on the rooftop. The Coconut Shrimp Bowl was our favorite, but everything we ordered was excellent! Our waiter, Eduardo, was very smiley and attentive throughout our meal. Fun drinks too!

We had a great experience here, we order ceviche and aguachille and they both were really good. Prices are reasonable. The atmosphere is really nice. The waiters were all very smiley and attentive. Everything we ordered was excellent. Overall we liked the experience and I would likely recommend

We came here for dinner and really enjoyed the time. The staff was freundly and helpful, especially our waiter Oscar, who made us feel welcome and was helpful with our choice. As started we shared the tasty Nachos, as main I enjoyed the mixed seafood platter and my partner had a huge and fresh bowl. Everything was very good and also the cocktails we had. Afterwards we went up to the rooftop bar to enjoy some more drinks. A really good place for dinner and drinks.

Restaurant
La Cevichería is a Cartagena restaurant that specializes in seafood dishes, including rice, pasta and soups. The no-frills eatery is popular with visitors because of its excellent ceviche.
Awesome food, great cocktails, excellent value and amazing service! We were so lucky to get there a half an hour before they were scheduled to open only to find they were opening a bit early and scored an amazing table outside. The line-up was already forming 15 minutes after they opened. And for good reason. All of the ceviches we had were outstanding...we all had a different favourite. The coconut lemonade with rum was absolutely delicious, and service from Rafael was second to none. What a great server and beautiful human. Shout out to Karina and Sandra for warm kindness and excellent service as well. This will be on the top of our list when we return to Cartagena.

All the food was delicious and flavourful. The portions are quite large so don’t over order. The staff were helpful with suggesting food and wine pairings. Reservations are recommended. The only negative was the restaurant was quite small so the tables are quite close together. I understand that they’re trying to fit as many tables as they can. It’s not an issue unless you can a noisy or pushing neighbour.

Nestled in the heart of Cartagena, La Cevichería is a culinary gem that seafood enthusiasts simply cannot afford to miss. From the moment you step foot inside, you're greeted with a vibrant atmosphere that sets the stage for an unforgettable dining experience. The menu at La Cevichería boasts an impressive selection of ceviche, showcasing the freshest catch of the day expertly prepared with a tantalizing blend of spices and flavors. Whether you're a fan of classic ceviche or prefer a more adventurous twist, there's something here to satisfy every palate. During my recent visit, I had the pleasure of trying their signature mixed seafood ceviche, and it was nothing short of exceptional. Each bite burst with the perfect balance of acidity, freshness, and seafood goodness, leaving me craving for more. In addition to their stellar ceviche offerings, La Cevichería also impresses with its friendly and attentive service. The staff members are knowledgeable and passionate about their craft, and they go above and beyond to ensure that every guest has a memorable dining experience. Whether you're a seafood aficionado or simply looking to indulge in some delicious fare during your time in Cartagena, I wholeheartedly recommend paying a visit to La Cevichería. Trust me; your taste buds will thank you later!

Wonderful place in the heart of Cartagena’s colonial old town. The food is absolutely delicious. We started with great Mexican-style Ceviche and a fantastic Paella that was prepared in a manner that throws shade on 99.9% of Spanish restaurants. The great Caribbean seafood helped tremendously. The staff was very kind and attentive and all drinks were great. Greetings from the kitchen of homemade potato chips began the night while various street artists rotated around the restaurant to enrich the atmosphere throughout.

I embarked on a journey to La Cevicheria, a famed establishment that has captured the attention of many. I was eager to delve into a tapestry of flavors that this coastal gem promised. Alas, my experience at La Cevicheria was a tale of highs and lows, with moments of delight tempered by moments of culinary disappointment. While the promise of ceviche was certainly enticing, I found myself underwhelmed by the offerings on my plate. The ceviche Douglas (shrimp in mango sauce) was my least favorite, as the flavors failed to resonate and create the anticipated burst of taste. The regular shrimp ceviche, unfortunately, lacked the vibrancy of flavor that I had hoped for, leaving me craving more. In contrast, the pulpo en salsa de mani (grilled octopus glazed with peanut sauce) was a high in the valley of lows, infusing the palate with its rich and tantalizing notes. The combination ceviche (drenched in a coconut and limon sauce) offered a tastier option than its counterparts, with flavors that stood out in the midst of an otherwise mediocre tasting experience. Regrettably, my overall impression of La Cevicheria was one of disappointment. While the refreshing cocktails provided a pleasant diversion, they could not salvage the food experience. The lack of flavor in some of the dishes and the overall forgettable nature of the meal left me yearning for the vibrant culinary sensations that Cartagena is renowned for. As much as I wished to be enchanted by the ceviches, the mediocrity of the flavors failed to ignite my palate. With so many exceptional dining experiences to be had in this city, I would be hard-pressed to recommend La Cevicheria as a must-visit destination. The wait and time invested would be better allocated to exploring the myriad other culinary gems that Cartagena has to offer
Gladys Leyva — Google review
The decor in this restaurant was cute but the food was really not that good. Like many other reviews, the ceviche was bland and the shrimp almost had no flavours. Seafood paella was a huge miss. The rice was extremely undercooked and the flavours were off. The seafood didn’t feel fresh either.

Food poisoning! We were up sick all night and most of the next day. You will need to make reservations to eat here. I recommend asking for a table inside to avoid the street beggars and performers. You’ll have a much more enjoyable dining experience. The pescado ceviche has a delicious mango sauce. The chocolate lava cake was amazing. My server was incredibly cool and I overtipped him because of his outstanding service.

Best ceviche I’ve ever had! So fresh!! Cannot recommend the good enough. Had to take away a star as the service was below average as the waiter was not attentive at all. Nevertheless, the food was delicious and the outdoor seating was lovely.

I have seen this restaurant on TV so many times. So this had to be one of the places I had to go to in Cartagena and boy does it live up to the hype. The shrimp ceviche with lemon and orange was so refreshing. After that I got the lobster pallea for two and definitely delicious and definitely for two even three. My one advice get here early it feels up pretty quickly.

As with most places that Anthony Bourdain touches, expect a long line before this place even opens. We queued up 15-20 minutes before it opened. Within a few minutes, the line was already around the block. And it was all foreigners (including us). I become dubious of a place when the place is full of non-locals and they are selling merchandise. Oh well. Such is the draw of Bourdain. That said though, we were there for the ceviche. We got a combination of ceviche so we can try different things. The seafood was definitely fresh. We also had a ceviche that was coconut based, which was also quite good. Ask your server for recommendations, they all speak english so you there's no problem talking to them. For 2 people, a combo ceviche, coconut ceviche might be enough. We were still kinda hungry so we ordered a grilled shrimp. What a mistake that was. The shrimp was so sad, and it really wasn't even grilled. Wished we just stuck with the ceviche. For parties of 3-4, get the lobster rice. The table next to us got it and it smelled so good. Overall, food was good. Stick to the ceviche and you'll be fine. If i had to wait for more than an hour, i don't think it would be worth it. There's plenty of restaurants in Cartagena that also serves fresh ceviche.

Truly impressed by this restaurant. The menu is extensive and it was hard to know what to pick with all the amazing options. So many varieties of ceviche, tartare, rice dishes, sandwiches and more. The setting is very cute with lovely decor and a lively open kitchen. The service was also fantastic. We had a mixed ceviche with shrimp, squid and white fish in coconut milk, lime, herbs and spices. It was absolutely fantastic. One of the best ceviches I have ever had. We then had a mixed fish and vegetable rice dish and a shrimp, mango and garlic butter sandwich. Both were also amazing! They also have a great drinks menu with good cocktails and a great wine selection. I highly recommend this place!

Decent food, wonderful service, but bad atmosphere. The outside seating will get you harassed by vendors every 5-10 minutes… it was never ending. Would recommend sitting inside instead. Would not recommend the vietnamese rice - it was not bad but not amazing. Fish sandwich was good and gambas al ajillo were also good but not amazing.

Disappointing! Other reviews discribe it very well..The quality is definitely there anymore. Taste is plain. Just a lot of lemon, overwhelming. Too bitter and sour. I’ve tried 3 dishes and they were all disappointing. Coconut ceviche was overall plain..Overpriced and service is not too attentive either. Spend your money somewhere else..!

Outdoor seating is a double edge sword here because you get some nice views while eating but it’s true that peddlers will badger you to death here. Food is good but I’ve had comparable ceviche in a lot of other restaurants in Cartagena so I’m not sure why I’d prioritize this place. Overall decent experience if you want to check it out.
Rovik Robert — Google review
We went here on vacation in Cartagena and it was a decent place. The main seating is outside but it wasn’t as pleasant because merchants interrupt our friend dinner frequently which lowers the vibe factor. The food was fresh seafood but it wasn’t super amazing in my opinion. I would try different dishes to see if that makes a difference. Service was okay but I didn’t appreciate the server offering a dish that we didn’t order in replacement of the dish we actually ordered. Please note the shared for two dishes is more like four people because they were huge portions. Overall, it was okay but not my favorite meal from restaurants in Cartagena.

The service, food, and staff at this establishment were exceptional. We had a wonderful experience, with everyone from the security personnel to our waitress Lina and Lucelis, the bartender Leonardo, and the manager Hugo being extremely friendly and attentive. This place is truly a fantastic option for dining.

The food was delicious! Ceviche is, of course, a ‘must’ here, and you will not be disappointed. The staff are friendly, polite and professional. The restaurant gets quite crowded and they do not take reservations, so you might have to wait for a table, but it is worth it. Keep in mind it is a seafood restaurant without many other options (only several meals without seafood are available).

El Burlador Gastrobar is a seafood, Mediterranean, Spanish, gastropub restaurant located in the heart of Cartagena. They offer a wide range of drinks including wine and beer, as well as vegetarian and vegan friendly dishes. Waitstaff are available to take your order and seat you at one of the many tables. The restaurant also has live music evenings which can be enjoyed by all.
I love eating out and always talk about writing reviews but never get around doing it. I can say that the food, service, & ambience was everything I was looking for and more (enough for me come back twice and take the time to write this review). Possibly our beat restaurant in Colombia! Everything was great, including the meat (a rarity in Colombia) and service. There was a live singer with a band as well. Only thing that was weird is that the waitress said a tip of 10% is already included but we could remove it and give it to her in cash instead.

I recently had the pleasure of dining at this fantastic restaurant for the second time, and once again, it exceeded my expectations in every way. From the moment I stepped in, I was greeted by the warm smile of Leonardo, our server, who made us feel right at home. His genuine hospitality and attentiveness throughout the entire meal truly enhanced our dining experience. Let's talk about the food, which was absolutely phenomenal. I decided to try the salmon this time, and it was cooked to perfection. The salmon fillet was tender and flavorful, with a beautifully crisp sear on the outside. Every bite was a delightful blend of succulent fish and subtle seasonings, leaving me wanting more. The shrimp rice was also a delightful surprise. The combination of plump, juicy shrimp and perfectly cooked rice created a mouthwatering symphony of flavors. It was a true culinary delight that perfectly complemented the main dish. What really sets this restaurant apart is the outstanding service and attention to detail. Leonardo's exceptional professionalism and warmth made us feel like valued guests. He went above and beyond to ensure that our dining experience was flawless, catering to our needs with a friendly demeanor and prompt service. The ambiance of the restaurant is another noteworthy aspect. It strikes the perfect balance between elegance and comfort, creating an inviting atmosphere that is ideal for any occasion. Whether you're looking for an intimate dinner or a celebration with friends and family, this restaurant provides the perfect backdrop. Based on my memorable experiences here, I can confidently say that I will be returning soon and frequently. The combination of excellent food, top-notch service from Leonardo, and the overall inviting atmosphere makes this place a true gem. I highly recommend it to anyone in search of a remarkable dining experience.

The ambiance and atmosphere of the restaurant is really quite nice. The bathrooms are super cool! They had a sign on our table to celebrate our anniversary, which was a nice touch. We ordered 3 half portions of appetizers (the croquettes, squid ink calamari & some egg, green pea, sausage dish) - I personally didn’t love any of them. I had the sirloin steak in a red wine reduction which was very good, but the side of fries were way too crispy and small, too crunchy (and I like crunchy fries). The max & cheese was average. My spouse had the bull rib (pictured) which he enjoyed but found it to be a bit too fatty, even for him. At a cost of $140 Canadian (I had one glass of wine), I would say it’s overpriced and I would not return.

I don't really advise to eat here …this place is absolutely overpriced and overrated like all the others places in Cartagena , i cannot understand why u love so much to fry and add oil for everything and on top of everything to add a lot of sugar! OTHER THING THAT bothered me was a lady there who tried to sing but she sang was out of tune…. i give u one star just for the services because your employees are struggling to work too bad that they don’t know a word in English!

Phenomenal time spent at El Burlador! The live music was incredible, food was well priced and the octopus burlador appetizer I had was one of the most excellent preparations I have ever had... Full of flavor, soft, creamy on the inside and with the right amount of seasoning and char on the outside -an outstanding dish! I was lucky enough to relay my gratitude to the young (and very stylish chef).

Very disappointing. Terrible service. The restaurant was mostly empty throughout my dinner - for good reason as I discovered. Very average food for the price, but what really disappointed was the service. I specifically asked for one of three tables with a decent view of the music band (which itself was below average), but the waiter denied me saying those tables were reserved. Which turned out to be a lie because they were all lying empty all evening. Unpleasant, avoid!

So happy me and my group chose to eat here. The service to start off was awesome from start to finish, nothing weird like we got during the rest of the trip but that is another story. The food was DELICIOUS and well portioned. I got the oxtail mushroom rice and was not what I was expecting at all...it was BETTER and creative and last it is on the small party street so be careful, both cab drivers dropped us off in different locations not knowing where they were going. Please try this place the inside was also beautiful and clean.

Our first day in Colombia (November 2023) led us to this gem of a spot after a day of exploring the city. What a fantastic choice it turned out to be! Seated at the bar, we opted for two mojitos, which were refreshingly unique. There was something special about them—perhaps a hint of bitters or a fresh juice—that made them stand out from any other mojitos I've tasted. Highly recommended! We chose the truffle eggplant chips, pork belly croquettes, and Mediterranean octopus. Each dish stood out, but what really impressed us was the incredible presentation. Our server skillfully combined the truffle chips on a grand platter right in front of us before serving them. The croquettes arrived atop dark, gleaming rocks nestled in an elegant box. The Mediterranean octopus was flawlessly cooked and presented with elegance. The attention to detail in both taste and presentation made this dining experience truly memorable. Unfortunately, we forgot our bartender/server's name, but his service was absolutely amazing! He added an extra layer of charm to our experience, contributing to the overall excellence of our visit. I regret not returning for dinner, but there's always next time!

La Mulata is a Caribbean restaurant that offers a great variety of traditional food from the coast of Colombia. You can find art on the walls and pictures of great artistic figures, making it feel like you're in an art gallery. The food is great and reasonably priced, perfect for a quick lunch.
Cute little bar a bit off the beaten path in the walled city in Cartagena. Good selection of cocktails, appetizers (we tried the ceviche) and entrees. They also have live musicians playing from time to time. Nice place to relax and have a drink just outside the bustle of the city.

We have been looking for a dinner spot just like this during our entire stay in Caratgena! Not only was the ambiance cozy, relaxing, and beautiful, but there was also a live sax musician performing for us in the main dining room. We were pleasantly surprised by the good prices as well as delicious and beautifully presented food. The fresh fish was buttery and I especially loved their coconut rice! They also gave us plantain chips, on the house, to start. The service here was also very pleasant, which made the experience even more enjoyable. Overall, if you are looking for a chill spot for dinner in the old town that is friendly and reasonably priced, you will find that here. The restaurant is also a lot bigger than you'd expect, making this ideal for large groups. Would recommend this restaurant if you want a more casual yet romantic date night. We spent 143 thousand COP, including tip, for 2 cocktails and 2 entrees.

The restaurant door is small, and only open a half when we arrived at 8:30 pm. We were not sure if it was open, but once we got in, it opened up a limited indoor space with good ambiance and inviting decoration. We ordered juice, kamarlon, shrimp rice, etc. all were delicious. The appetizer are cold shrimp with fried plantains. Their plantains are long and thin slices dipped with yogurt- very delicious and different from the other restaurants. I strongly recommend this Caribbean restaurant.

We first heard of La Mulata from another couple during an excursion. After seeing the great online reviews, we decided to dine there on our last night in Cartagena. It was a great choice! The restaurant sits in the heart of the walled city and is easily accessible by foot. The decor is catchy and the table layout allows for a cozy experience for dinners. Moving on to the food, this was definitely some of the tastiest food that we had on this trip. They served traditional regional dishes with great flavor. Our favorite was hands down the Posta Negra Cartagenera, which is meat slowly cooked cooked to a fall off the bone delicious delicacy. The food was definitely worth the bang for your buck. We at the Zasón Guide definitely recommend visiting if you are near the area. Extraordinary: Smell, Taste ÇÇ

yet another incredible seafood dining experience in Cartagena. we visited La Mulata for lunch and were seated outside. shortly after this we were all treated to a customary bowl of broth - which was very tasty and an unexpected treat. i went for the pasta carmones (shrimp) and was not disappointed. as per usual the Colombians went ham the portion size, with a loaf of pasta and prawns. I also had a bowl of cheese to top it all off. the prawns were perfectly cooked and super juicy. this made it into my top three meals whilst out in Colombia. the service was very good too. recommend for anyone in Cartagena!

I have eaten here many many times…. I just can’t get enough of the coconut rice… arroz de coco… yummy. Paired with vegetables, filet of a freshly caught fish, plantains and limonada de coco 🥥…. Do not skip dessert.

La Mulata was Absolutely DELICIOUS!! I highly recommend eating here while in Cartagena. I went to La Mulata 2x because of the Ceviche. I also ate Mojarra Fish that was very taste and left me feeling very contempt. Serves are very attentive and the Hospitality from the staff was Outstanding! Thank you la mulata 💛💙❤️.

Wonderful classic Caribbean food. A must try for the best version of the classics. The seafood is so so fresh and eveything tastes amazing. I got the fillet with shrimp which came with coconut rice and it was delicious. I also enjoyed the coconut lemomda.

Truly the best seafood I had in the whole colombia! The interior design is great, nice staff and real chefs are cooking in the kitchen. Best ceviches and lemonade coco! And they gave us free fish soup started one of the best I've ever tried، the fish broth was fantastic.

We came here for lunch and it had a local vibe. All the food came in generous portions, they gave a complimentary fish soup to start and between the three of us, we shared the shrimp cocktail (fresh and tasty), the filet camaronero (well cooked fish and sauce was light and flavourful), the prawn spaghetti (simple flavours but worked well) and the ensalada (good to break up meal). The service was polite and efficient.

Best margaritas I’ve ever had in the whole of Columbia Lovely mohito not with smashed ice but cubes of ice Lovely warm Bread with garlic butter served straight away Excellent food We somehow misread the “fish restaurant” menu and ended up with one chicken dish and one fish dish, which was absolutely fabulous. It gives us a little bit of a mix up - shake up. The fish was a little bit like a paella style with lovely fresh fish in there The chicken was a lovely chicken breast fillet with lovely chimichurri sauce over the top and a lovely dressed salad Next Door people had something that looked like a fish head with not very much meat on it, and I think if that would’ve landed in front of me I wouldn’t have been that impressed. All of the food we ordered was absolutely fabulous. Really cheap too in total for all the drinks and food came to less than £32 Well priced fresh fish restaurant would recommend this place to anyone who loves fish #fishrreataurant #cartegena #cartegenafood #bestcolumbiamcocktails #columbiancocktails #columbianfoodie #cheapeatscartegena

This is an amazing place with great food. The fried fish was so well seasoned and the coconut rice was the best I've had. The ceviche was so flavorful as well. My friend loved his dish as well. The staff were also very friendly and full of smiles. If you travel to Cartegena, this restaurant is a must! You won't be disappointed.

Free fish soup starter was amazing, shrimp ceviche was amazing, fish was amazing, atmosphere very nice, service great, not expensive food, light AC with fans was a good temperature. The best restaurant we've tried here, went twice in our 5 day trip! Was not very busy when we went for lunch or dinner, no wait for a table.

Looks like a small unassuming restaurant from the street, but there are a couple larger rooms in the back if you have a big group. Good for tourists with plenty of variety on the menu. Food is good and filing.
