Bezeklik Thousand Buddha Caves

Mentioned on
Historical place
Sights & Landmarks
The Bezeklik Thousand Buddha Caves, consisting of 77 caves adorned with depictions of Buddha, were constructed between the 5th and 14th centuries. The complex is situated in a stunning desert landscape and was known for its exceptional Uyghur Buddhist art created during the 11th century. However, most of the artwork was removed by German, Japanese, and British teams in the early 20th century. Despite this loss, a few caves remain open for exploration today.
Winter time the place is empty. Most paintings were destroyed, stolen. The remainings were beautiful. Cave 33 is the one that retained the most.

Beautiful paintings and golden statues .. Amazing and historic!!

Interesting setting, but the caves themselves have all been defaced from religious wars, so in truth not much to see.

Small place the surrounfing mountain id amazing. Unfortunately we are not allowed to explote beyond.

Another nature and man-made wonder. Awesome! Art relics and paintings on caves' wall. The caves were dugged out of mountains by monks where they lived and meditated. It was badly destroyed, paintings literally "scrapped" off the mud walls and carted out of China, with the rest that they could not take away defaced.

Ancient caves that provided by Buddhist refuge in the transition of religions in this area. Unfortunately the frescoes have been compromised and also pillaged by the Germans, but still worth a visit.
Nisha Ravindran — Google review
Supposed to be a rich history of Buddhism. But caves are destroyed, mural were stolen by a German, leaving empty holes... Not worth visiting
Christopher Chua — Google review
go to see what might have been until the statues and relics were taken away in 1900 by a German I understand and destroyed during the 2nd world war ... but impressive to think what it was like before modern transportation and the commitment and respect they had to do this for the Buddha

Ancient City of Jiaohe

Ancient Ruins
Historic Sites
The Ancient City of Jiaohe, located just 10 miles from Turpan, is a remarkable archaeological site that dates back 2,000 years. Situated on a leaf-shaped plateau between two river valleys, this historical city served as the capital of the Jushi or Gushi Kingdom during China's Tang Dynasty period. The well-preserved ruins offer insights into ancient earthen community life and are accessible by renting a car and hiring a local guide.
Easy to walk, needs around 1 hour to explore the ruin from the south gate till the stupa forest and back to the south gate

Well preserved ancient city. Not a spot for those expecting modern attraction. Historical ruins, well described, thought-provoking travel in time. Would recommend to visit in the late openning hours or early in the morning (when cooler and better light). There is no pleasure in walking open space in the hottest time of the day. Take water, wander freely and let imagination work.

10KM away from the city of Turpan easy access. It is located on a leaf-shaped plateau between two deep river valleys. We rent a car and had a local guider with us. You can learn a lot in this historic site and we believe a guider is an essential if you do not know much about the history of 西域. The tempurature is quite hot and would become terrible in the afternoon so be there early in the morning would be better as there is no cover at the ruins. Enjoy :)

Though not a single building is intact, visitors can still make out the scale and orderly planning of this ancient city.

Historical Archaeology site belongs to the Jushi or Gushi Kingdom's capital city, formed during late 2nd and early 1st century BC. That was China's Tang Dynasty period. Located atop a leaf-shaped plateau on a steep cliff between two river valleys. All visitor vehicles must park at the tourist center located at: 42°56'37.1"N 89°05'02.4"E, then change to golf cart to the main entrance to ruin city. Jiaohe ancient city is about 10km to the west of Turpan, you may bike there, or take a cab with approx. 10RMB, but it is a scheduled spot if you follow tour to sightseeing Turpan. MUST use sunblock cream (or bring umbrella or hat) as the sun are getting hot and hotter when reaching afternoon, also bring some water as the rest stop with selling beverages are located at the entrance only. So suggest you reach this ruin city early morning and leave at the afternoon. Entrance fee: RMB 40. admission combo: Ancient city + Ancient village + golf cart = RMB105, Ancient city + golf cart = RMB65 Must bring: Sunblock, hat or umbrella. Time to visit: Morning. Must see: Northern part of the city (Great Buddhist Temple, Forest of Stupas and Residential area) as most of tourist back to the south gate after visiting the government administrative spot because of the sun heat .

The remains of an ancient city, carved out of a piece of "mud", in the middle or the meeting of 2 rivers. They made homes, with rooms and kitchen etc out of this little piece of land, built centuries ago. Its slowly being eroded by the weather. A thunder storm could have possibly washed the city away, but it has remained standing. Nature and man make wonders!

A group of ruins if wihout reading the descriptions on the panels, you will wonder what is this all about. If have sufficient time, still worth to just take a look om the ruins.

beautiful mosque with great historical behind. interesting echo point.
Victor Osman — Google review
There is not much to see here. But it is quiet place away from the crowd and the mineret is somewhat unique and beautiful. If you happen to be in Turpan, it is probably worth spending half an hour here. There's not much you can do in Turpan anyway.

A mosque gifted to a local Muslim tribe head by Emperor Qian Long aa return for this tribe head's pledge to obey the rulimg of the Qing Dynasty. Now a worship place for the local Chinese Muslim.

So sad, this is a mosque where there should be freedom to pray to God, but you have made it into a tourist site, a museum.
Chrissie Br — Google review
These ancient historical structures were so well maintained that made you feel like yourself were living at that century.

Ask the locals, they are crazy about this place because a TV show about a legendary story of “Journey to the West” was shot here. Many Chinese from all over come here to visit this place, extremely touristy though- and there are airplane rides, camel rides, ATV rides and so on. You’d probably spend an hour or two here, and that’ll be enough.
Seth Lau — Google review
Busy, packed with tourists spot, with plenty commercial attractions for them, such as camel riding, quads, helicopters etc. In spite of irritating touristy chaos i would still recommend having a look. I have walked bit further and enjoyed mountains totally alone. Be prepared for extreme heat. Water and suitable head cover are the must.
