Churches & Cathedrals
Grote Kerk Naarden, built in 1380, is not just a church but also served as a lighthouse and hiding place. The tower walls bear cannons as reminders of past occupations. Naarden itself is one of the best-preserved fortified towns in the Netherlands with a unique star-shaped design and double fortifications. It's part of the Hollandse Waterlinies (UNESCO World Heritage).
It's rather unique experience to visit The 'Grand Church in Naarden Vesting. The ancient history of the Netherlands and specifically the province of North Holland can be seen in and around this landmark church dating back to the times when Charles V reigned this land. Many events, socially, historically and musically take places here the whole year around including the 'Mattäus Passion'.

(Translated by Google) Attended a concert here by the Handel Choir. A beautiful concert in a very beautiful building. You're short of eyes. Since 1922 you can listen to the Matheus Passion here on Good Friday.

I invite you to visit the paintings from the 17th century in the church in Naarden.

This is very well maintained church in Naarden. The architecture is simply magnificent. The structure is huge and has an imposing presence on the square. At the church entrance you also get pamplets in various languages at free of cost. These pamplets contains the detailed description of the objects and artefacts that are kept there. There is no entry fee and can be accessed by anyone. The church has been well maintained and preserved. The medieval irgans are definitely one of the main attractions. Definitely one can visit this place after a trip of the vesting museum.

Nice church, playground behind and Commenius statue on the side. In the historical center of Naarden. We hope to return here soon.
Jana Schnaubeltová — Google review
The great church of Naarden is special to me because years ago I attended the Mathews Passion. An event with royals and politicians and the most beautiful music ever written. So every now and then I undertake a small a pilgrimage to this 15th century church. This visit I was struck more than before by the paintings on the wooden vaults. I had not seen them in this splendor before. The light from the windows on this sunny day was perfect. The paintings were finished in 1518. They were re-discovered during the latest restoration. This is unique because much of the art in Dutch churches were destroyed during the reformation. In the middle of the church there are large mirrors that can help you to look at the drawings on the ceiling.

Very nice museum experience. It takes you back to war era. Beautiful city surrounded by water, greenery, tunnels and warfare history. Good walk, lush green gardens, small cafe with snacks and coffe available. The dutch and english tour audio is available. Pre booking of tickets is recommended and with museum card its covered. The long underground tunnels make you stunned!

Exquisitely designed small museum with great amounts of information down in the bottom of the casemate, nice eatery, delightful staff and resident goat herd. Kudos again to the designers.

Super interesting. The Dutch know (knew) how to construct their forts. Maybe a bit pricey, but staff was friendly and we had an interesting hour there.
Sebastian Vikkels?e-Engelbrecht — Google review
just a nice museum not big . take the audio tour that’s really interesting.
Ewout — Google review
An excellent museum. The staff were super friendly and helpful. The audio guide was decent and the museum has a good mix of outdoor and indoor exhibits. It is good to go when there is no rain, as some outside walking is needed.
Mark van Zon — Google review
I finally also visited the museum inside after having visited a few times the outside part of the museum. While I really like seeing the star shaped fortification which you can walk over, get a very good impression of how it was build and why, I thought that the level of the inside museums was a bit lower. Especially if you have to pay for the ticket. Nice is when you go on a day there is the cannon demonstration.

A wonderful place located in the historic fortress walls and grounds of the ancient city of Naarden Vesting. The museum portrays the environment of the military defense force that was located here in all aspects.

Beautiful and peaceful place. We really wanted to do the boat tour but there were no shipmates available on the day we went, which was unfortunate. They showed the history really well, and were more than happy to give us explanations. Great experience!

This is a pearl in Naarden. We discover something new in every visit. Today we could enjoy of the shooting of the canon, beautiful show done by 3 soldiers (volunteers) who gave a detail explanation of each step at the shooting. Great place for all ages, specially on a sunny day :)

Very cool place. You tour under the citadel, in the tunnels, and walk above the top. Really nice view, and very interesting. Not super big so it doesn't take a lot of time. Should see it if you're in Naarden!

Interesting place to visit, both in and outside the fortress. Lots to learn about military defence in this low lying country. No videos, but interactive displays with wartime audio. Nice temporary exhibit of the Napoleonic era. Lots to be learned. Also good for a visit with children.
Cynthia Lammertsma — Google review
Its a nice place to explore with children. It has a beautiful water canals running around the casle. It has lots of green area and play parks for kids. One can have boating to do in to the canals. Saturday farmer's market had the variety food. A big church with a kids play area in front. A big statue behind the church. An ancient city hall with a guide to tell you about the history of casle. Some remains of old casle. Hobbit look a like houses around the canals. Ohh I forgot to mention there a a small zoo area at the corner before you enter the casle with animals Beers, sheep's , goats, peacocks, Emu etc. In stort is a great place for a day trip for a family.

VVV Naarden is located inside the Utrechtse Poort at Ruijsdaelplein 6 and is open from November to March, Tuesday through Sunday, and daily from April to October. The office provides tourist information as well as details about the fort and other forts in Holland. Visitors can enjoy strolling or cycling through Naarden Vesting, with charming terraces near the Grote Kerk for a relaxing break.
It's a pity that Marktstraat is not on Google Maps as this is a very nice street with a pleasant appearance including cozy restaurants and eateries. A very beautiful combination of landscape and history. Don't miss the video available in tourist information office of the city. It briefly explains the history of waterline of Netherlands in 6-7 minutes. It lets you to better understand the relationship of Dutch with the water, how they use it for different purposes.

XZK for You Media (Translated by Google) It is a pleasure to cycle or walk through the Naarden Fortress. There are nice terraces at the Grote Kerk. An asset for those who want to enjoy a cup of coffee or a glass of wine under the sun, if there is one of course. There is a lot to see and relatively little to do. And that makes the Fortress interesting. It's also nice to just look around and not always want to be entertained. The best thing would be if the Fortress would one day become car-free again. XZK for You Media

Nice clean station, no check out gate so don't forget to check out by tapping on the chipcart-receiver just after go out from the train (it is near the stair). Wide parking + pick up site too.

I use this station quite a lot. Beautiful architecture and the station is more and more integrated with the nearby area due to the new construction. One side directly some bars and restaurants. Other side an action store and villa area. Some buses depart sometimes for onwards connection but the area is not well known for good public transportation. Walking distance to "het Naardermeer" nature area for walking or biking. Easy access to Amsterdam, Schiphol, Almere and my favorite city of Utrecht. Feels relatively safe station, compared to other stations. Downside is there is no 10 minute service, so sometimes you have to wait a bit for the train. Shops in the station are often closed even at normal daytime (afternoon) times. You can walk to Bussum city center in 5-10 minutes. Naarden city center (the old town) is a bit further away by foot, around 20 minutes.

The Stichting Comenius Museum in Naarden, The Netherlands is dedicated to the life and works of Jan Amos Comenius, a renowned Czech philosopher and educator. Comenius had progressive ideas about education, advocating for the education of girls as well. The museum showcases exhibits on his life, teachings, and his influence on education and philosophy. Visitors have noted the friendly reception by staff who are passionate about sharing insights into the museum's subject matter.
Fifty years ago, in 1968, the 'Prague Spring' abruptly ended because of the brotherly help from the communist neighbours of Czechoslovakia. Quite a number of people choose to live in exile, by which the followed the example of Jan Amos Comenius, a pansophist pedagogue, who is buried in the church that is now part of the Comenius museum. Actually, this church happens to be Czechoslovak (Czech) territory. People who fled for the communist repression still could set a foot on Czechoslovak ground here. It's a nice tiny museum in the beautiful setting of the star shaped fortifications of Naarden Vesting.

The brasserie Arsenaal is an extraordinary establishment with a friendly and hospitable staff. The cuisine is delectable, offering a diverse menu that satisfies the preferences of all patrons. Unfortunately, due to unfavorable weather conditions, dining on the terrace was not possible; however, the interior is equally cozy. A revisit to this remarkable place is absolutely warranted. Gratitude goes out to the entire team at Arsenaal for their exceptional service.
First and foremost, this is an outstanding restaurant! The brasserie is beautifully decorated, creating a cozy ambiance, and the food is not only diverse but also meticulously prepared and absolutely delicious. However, the highlight is the exceptional service. The host is adept at recommending dishes tailored to each diner and welcomes guests with incredible warmth. It's a delight to encounter such genuine hospitality—we thought it had vanished! We will certainly return!

An Italian restaurant, serving a variety of Italian and international dishes, with wines from all over the world. We enjoyed lovely hospitality during the quiet early evening here and great food, prepared with a good eye for detail. We found the prices a bit on the high side. A tip to the owner: if you decorate a big part of your restaurant with Jesus crucifixes, take the time to explain to your staff why you do that and what the meaning is. And remember: death by crucifixion even the Romans ended up abolishing, as it was a too horrible way to be put to death. The cross of Jesus stands for something, something big!

Visited this place on the 10th of September. Got "politely" kicked out. Me and my family were told that ALL the tables were reserved for a half and hour later. I was sitting at the restaurant nearby and noticed that nobody arrived even in an hour. I suppose that this place promotes xenophobia against some groups of people and I really want to find out why were we asked to leave.

( het naar de kassa lopen ) (Translated by Google) Received a gift voucher from the boss as a Christmas present. The very first thing was the reception was neat and friendly. We were early (6:30) and therefore the first. After receiving it at the table, it was immediately noticed that the music speaker was placed right on your ear line, so that was not very pleasant. It's quite cozy, so if you can't stand prawn cracker chewing noises, it may be a bit of a challenge in the beginning. (the first guests were seated next to us) There was also a loose plank on the floor under my chair leg. Every time someone walked by it felt like your chair was being grabbed, which felt a bit strange. Considering the prices, you really expected a wow feeling from the quality of the food. This was a bit disappointing, it looks nice and chic, but I didn't think it tasted very good. The dishes were uniquely composed. 1 drink PP and a total of 8 dishes 112 euros. There were also a few dishes not available on the menu. There were replacements for that, but we only heard this when a table next to us was helped where this was told. After eating everything and waiting for the receipt, I wanted to pay. I had to wait about 15-20 minutes for that. I ended up walking to the cash register to pay for the gift voucher, which I thought was not entirely the intention. (walking to the cash register)

Nice environment and lovely atmosphere when you walk into the restaurant. Someone put a lot of thought into the decor of the building to make it stand out and there were even two love seats near the fire place for eating. A lovely spot to take a friend or two to sit and eat. Bigger groups are welcome as well but I would probably call ahead. The quality of the items is amazing. Fresh products in every dish. Remember the name of the restaurant when eating so you thoroughly realize that this is a tapas bar and the portions are smaller but the items you receive you havent thought of and there are very limited people that serve you these type of tapas. The only one in the area that I know of. Check it out and enjoy. Prices arent that cheap but at some restaurants you pay for the atmosphere, food and clientele.

Great fusion restaurant, very well balanced dishes with diverse flavours. Warm atmosphere and good service. I urge you to try the fois gras beef sushi, it is absolutely fantastic (for the ones open to it)

A unique place to have good Asian fusion food in Naarden-Bussum. Salmon Nigiri with Gin was perfect! The 🍣 rolls are their strong areas to test and experience. Definitely will come back soon ->

Dutch restaurant
De Goede Gooier, a Dutch restaurant established in 1984, has witnessed the turnover of numerous chefs and owners over the years. While maintaining consistently good standards, there were occasions when it stood out among others. However, recently there has been a decline in the frequency of dining at this establishment. Unexpectedly invited to dine there last night, it felt as though Escoffier himself had been reincarnated.
Such an elegant and beautiful restaurant. Had a nice selection of food and wine. Waiting staff were wonderful, informative and well versed in Dutch and English in addition to perhaps several other languages 😀 This place has a great location and is ideal for intimate and private events. Slightly on the pricey side but well worth the visit.

No vegetarian or vegan lunch options (unless you count the side of fries). Even the gazpacho contained meat, they ended up throwing mine away. Gazpacho!? Come on, it is 2021, you can do better than that! Very pricy for for what it is.

Lovely place and location. Beautiful view and Terras. It can be very crowded so do make a reservation before you visit this restaurant. A good menu and wine card. The service can be slow because of the crowdy moments.

Very nice food and location. Make sure to grab a spot on the terrace overlooking the meadow, it's beautiful. Bit on the pricey side though

I came here already in 1984 ! Have seen many chefs and owners go bye. The standard was always good and sometimes stood out. The last years my frequency of dining out here became somewhat less. By surprise I was invited last night and it was as of Escoffier was reincarnated ! A warm ambiance and friendly and swift service with a great sense of humor ! Faisant & Sauerkraut, Sole meunière, Bisque d'Homard ..Big home made fries and home made Mayonaise, Dame Blanche and or 'Oma's Cake met Peer' (Pear). The exceptional Weiss Burgunder (German white) can easily compete with the best French or South African contenders. Even the wooden toothpics were better than mine at home! Bravo it was fan f...... tastic-tasty as Chef Ramsey could have said!

I wanted to come in after work to drink beer and order snacks, but they kicked me out of there and said that this is not a bar and they won’t serve me. I don't recommend this place, the service sucks

We went for late lunch on a Monday given that most restaurants in the area are closed on Mondays. What an incredibly good experience, we tried the 2 and 3 course menu and were delighted with everything we were presented with. A must try!

Aperol Spritz costing €12,50. Not any special about this drink (not any effort to make it look like a nice aperitif) and unfriendly staff (leaning on furniture/sun umbrellas while taking to guests and having them taste their wines while looking around with uninterested face). I had to ask for extra ice cubes as only a little piece of ice was added. Staff didn’t really care and reacted in an uninterested way. In other nice places nearby (Blaricum/Laren), exactly the same drink costs €8,50 coming with smiles and sometimes even a little extra (little nibble) and lots of ice. No idea why it should be €4 more at this place. Not my first time experiencing unfriendly staff here and pretty high rates. A real pity for such a beautifully located venue.

This is a very, very good place to have lunch or dinner (or just a coffee). Not very expensive either - considering the standard - with spectacular views and very good atmosphere. The meals are interesting, made of high quality ingredients, and fresh - you will get that good feeling of eating something good, feeling satiated - but not overly full. Even if you take a dessert. The coffee is good too and good enough reason to come - assuming you can get a table. The place is busy and on the weekends a reservation is highly recommended, if not a must. The best time to just get a coffee and enjoy the views is between 11am and 12pm. For high quality service and a full house the service is quite efficient (and very friendly). They forgot to serve me coffee today and without me asking or them as much as mentioning it they provided me with a complementary dessert alongside. Classy!

Located in the historical city of Naarden, Restaurant Acquavite is a stunning Italian eatery that offers a unique dining experience. With its elegant decor and exquisite furnishings, this restaurant provides the perfect setting for special occasions, business meetings, or family gatherings. The interior design is both beautiful and captivating, with tasteful decorations adding to the overall ambiance. Situated in a romantic binnentuin (inner courtyard), guests can enjoy their meals while surrounded by a charming atmosphere.
Had dinner here with a friend, started with the mozzarella in carozza. Well presented and tasted great! Onto the main course I had wild boar cheek with tenderloin and sweet potato. First time I had wild boar cheek, the taste was good and very tender. As desert we had tiramisu, not the way I'm used to it but it was good nonetheless. All while dining in a picturesque old hospital base. It was a bit noisy but thats to be expected here. We were waited by a lovely ladely whoms name I sadly can't remember but her service was amazing! Overall a great experience and looking forward to coming back in the future

A nice restaurant, slightly to formal for my taste ( but that's personal, if you like formal, you'll like it here) the deer steak tartar I had as a first course was delicious and the salmon my mom had too. As a main course, my mom had the vegetables dish with crispy mushroom and coleflower, also a very nice dish. I ordered the lapwing (small bird). I have to say that I'm not a difficult eater, there is really nothing I don't eat, but the lapwing was such a disappointment that I gave some to my mom (who also didn't like it) and left the rest. The taste was weird, to much wild earthtones, the structure very spongy and nothing like a lapwing should taste. When I made a (kindly said) remark, I didn't get a response. Again, nice restaurant if you like formal, but don't order the lapwing if you like lapwing.

Friday evening, 6 May 2022:Everyone there was very rude, unfortunately !!!! From a short lady to the girl at the bar. Also the young man, a very thin man. We are a group of friends, around 8 persons, who came on vacation to our beloved Netherlands for the 3rd time. Our Dutch friends live here. We visited Naarden for the first time in order to visit this restaurant and book a table for one night. We will stay in the Netherlands for a month. So, at that night of our dinner we had plan to make our business deals, also to relax with a nice dinner. In order not to disturb the staff, because we were a lot of people, I went in the restaurant. One of the 8 people. To check the place, to have a first connection with the staff e.c.And of course to book a table for any night in the next month. I got excited about the place and took 2 photos. If this was wrong then we apologize for that. But before I took the photos, everyone there was not polite with me.From the first time!!! Why??? Perhaps I was wearing casual clothes? We are tourists and yes. We wear casual clothes all day to be comfortable. But even all that, I was smiling and polite. In fact, I told them how beautiful is their place. And the short lady told me in English "Buy it". And the girl at the bar showed me the door and kicked me out !!! How Rudeness and Inhospitable my God ???!!!!! We were all shocked !!!!!!Because we know that all Dutch people are so sweet and very polite persons!!!!!!! I continued to be smiling and polite, but my heart was cracked!!! I didn't want to make it an issue and I asked them about a reservation. But NO!!!!Never again there!!!!!!! Sorry guys!!!!! If I were more courageous I would ask to talk to the owner of the restaurant !!!!

The gorgeous outdoor setting feels like you are sitting in a magical fairy tale. The food is delicious and staff are super professional and kind. Can’t think of a better place to have dinner on a terrace this summer - would definitely recommend stopping here

Quality of the food terrible. Very expensive for what you get. Complaints are ignored. Drink measures are too small for the price asked. Not a restaurant I recommend for someone that likes good food.

This is a restaurant that has a vintage feeling. When you walk in, the stone-made long corridor gives a very historical feeling. There's possibility to dine outside and enjoy the sunshine. The staff are very friendly and attentive. Service is prompt and they care for your feelings. Since I was in a cycling trip, I just had a pizza, but it's truly delicious! Made with fresh ingredients and then wrapped close, quite unlike typical pizzas that are just flat. After the dinner the waitress served me with a full plate of candies. I tried one and it's definitely better than the average mimt candies from other restaurants.
