Le Sentier des Ocres, also known as the Ochre Trail, offers two marked paths through a stunning area of red and yellow cliffs in a former ocher pigment quarry. This colorful treat for the eyes is located in the charming town of Roussillon, part of the Luberon region in Provence. The area is accessible by car and is about an hour's drive from Aix en Provence using highway A7.
A short loop walk perfect for all people of abilities and ages! 3€ entrance fee and free for children 10 and under. The bright red landscape is magnificent! We went in December and it had snowed the night before, so the sight was even more amazing! If going in the cooler more wintery months I would recommend wearing snow boots and bring a warm jacket too! After the walk we strolled into Roussillon (literally a 2 min walk) and had a look around the beautiful town. Parking was free when we went, and located right at the entrance of the walk. There are toilets at the carpark which were well looked after and free of charge.

The ocherfields are a nice place to visit if you're in the neighborhood. It is an old mining site where they would mine ocher colored rock. The fields stretch quite far and make for some beautiful landscapes. The nearby town is also worth a visit, as it is very colorful, with all building being made out of or being colored with the stone from the fields. Do keep in mind that the walking routes through the fields are relatively short. These fields are also a big tourist spot, so you'll want to keep that in mind when visiting. If you visit early in the day and outside of the tourist season, you'll probably have a better time enjoying the ocher fields.
Fr?d?ric Hannes — Google review
A fun trek good for the whole family and dog friendly. The bathroom was impossible and the parking situation is hectic. It costs 4 euros for the whole day, so you can leave the car there and go to the town for a walk.
Rony — Google review
Definitely worth a visit. No wheelchair access. Wear shoes you can wash afterwards. Thus journey through the old ochre quarries is charming and interesting. As opposed to many tourist sites (just because there's just too many of them) this has great signage, kids games and arrows to follow, depending on the difficulty of the trail you have chosen
S. Ilona H. — Google review
Just stunning! As the sun comes up the whole place just comes alive. The long walk is very easy, and definitely worth the little bit of extra effort. A must see if you're in the area.
Sheridan — Google review
Gorgeous!! So fun to walk around in nature for a bit. Wear closed toed running shoes to avoid getting the orange sand all in between your toes. It was hot, but there was shade from the trees. Easy hike, but there is a long staircase that you must take to do it. A few local touristy shops at the top sold fun Provence keepsakes & water bottles. There’s also a potable water fountain at the top. Parking was an outdoor lot just before the hike (there were signs) for €3. After the hike, we walked around the town of Roussillon with more unique shops & narrow, red-walled walkways. Definitely recommend adding this to your itinerary!
Zoe Marans — Google review
There are two walks; the longest will probably take 30-40 minutes, I wouldn’t take the shortest one. Expect a few stairs, nothing strenuous though. The soil is sandy and its colour will stay on your shoes a while. We visited the place in June in the second half of the day and that was perfect.
Marcel Molendijk — Google review
This is a really cool place. If you are near, please do not hesitate to visit. The red rocks and soil give almost mars like vibes. Great place to walk around and take awesome photos. It takes around 1,5h to do the bigger circle. Do the big one as the small is almost all forest.
Jacek Głąbica — Google review
Roussillon is my favorite village! I went hiking to the old quarry, I shouldn’t have worn light colored shoes. I had to throw them away afterwards because the stain from the soil won’t come off. The village walk is beautiful, and the view is amazing!

Impressive location. Mont-Ventoux in the background.

Colorado in Provence as they’re commonly known is indeed a colourful treat to our eyes. The combination of several coloured soil types in one little place accessible by hiking is an interesting experience in itself. Located in the cute town of Roussillon, they’re one of the tourist attractions in the region of Luberon. The town is pretty cute as well. All houses are coloured with the same local pigments. One can reach there by car easily. Roughly an hour drive from Aix en Provence using highway A7. Dedicated parking is available for cars and camping vehicles. Be aware that reservation required in the month of July and August to visit this place. There are little lavender fields in the town at a walking distance. Dont Forget to buy colour pigments if you love to paint. There are many vineyards in this region to explore. Note: the place becomes really hot in summers so be prepared for such weather and carry a lot fluids and fruits for hiking trail. Hiking trails are well marked (yellow or red).
NITENDRA SINGH — Google review
A must visit place.. you canvisit the ocres and the village in an afternoon. The tracks are very easy to do you. You can visit the sentier in two hours. However prepare yourselfs with water hats and a good pair of shoes. I do not recommend this palce during summer.. it can be very hot and dry during summers
Ansiya C — Google review
It was wonderful to travel to this place surrounded by nature like this. The color palette of red was everywhere in this valley, every view had something to give you like a framed painting. The walk itself is not too difficult, but if necessary, it can be divided into a longer (50min) and a shorter (30min) tour. We didn't wait long to enter, there is a nearby car park which allows you to park your car for the whole day at a modest price (€4).
J_Gogo — Google review
Such an incredibly beautiful place! This might be my favorite spot in Provence. It’s like nothing else in the world. A magical rainbow of natural colors! I was worried that it might be too crowded, but we arrived around noon on a Friday in early November and had much of the (longer) walk all to ourselves. The path is very interesting and well-maintained. Convenient parking and excellent value.
eve prime — Google review
Its a fun stop and a nice walk around the rocks and learning about the history of ocre. They have two walks and we took the longer one—if you walk at a decent pace you will definitely do it quicker than they say. A nice add on to visiting Roussillon which is definitely worth a stop while wandering the Provence.
Steve Hartig — Google review
Beautiful walk in the old ochre surface mine. Easy walk though not accessible.
Magnus Ohman — Google review
Beautiful town. The colours of the buildings come from the ochre in soil that is used in the building materials.
Peter Bowman — Google review
Spectacular place to visit. Best to park just outside the village and do the short walk but parking is available in the centre. Fairly busy places but that's too be expected given the scenery and great little shops. Nice sleeveless of eateries too.
Troy Doyle — Google review
Worth the drive. Great colors all around. Go as early as you can. Avoid the heat and the busses. The hike times are much shorter than posted.
Chris Peck — Google review
We love the sand of many different colors. Astonishing view, also back to Roussillon. Good descriptions. Nice loop to go around the site, also for children. Trees spend needed shadow during summertime.

Located on the western border of the Luberon's ochre region, Roussillon presents itself as a russet-red village perched upon a hill, situated approximately 10 km / 6 miles east of Gordes. Regarded as one of France's most stunning villages, it captivates visitors with its charm and plethora of delightful spots. Its enchanting old town showcases a unique hue derived from the presence of ochra, creating an extraordinary visual experience.
This place stole my heart, very cozy place with lots of nice places.

Underground complex of tunnels & galleries in a 19th-century ocher mine, now open for guided tours.
Very nice place and an amazing experience! The tour is very good and the guide explains the whole story about Ocre. The guide Julie was super kind and we could really tell that she liked what she was doing and explaining. Would recommend to visit.
Matheus Meyer — Google review
They have their reasons. Probably commercial, but they claim Health and Safety but you cannot take photo’s in the tunnels. Having said that the staff are very very nice, look after you and they provide a tablet as a guide if you are a minority in a French speaking group. I thoroughly enjoyed this educational one hour trip.
Simon Colliss — Google review
Nice and interesting visit into the story of the mines.. unfortunately, guided tour is on French only. But they can provide a tablet with some info.

Very interesting mines! Worth to visit in hot sunmer days to cool down and learn history. Reserve the tour before visiting! I got lucky and was able to join the french tour. BIG BIG thanks to the staff for enabling this, providing englih tablet and even bigger thanks for the guide who took the time to explain in englih just for me, very nice people. There are also event here becouse of amazing accustics. Unfortunately didn't take the time to stay longer. Thank you

Really interesting, informative and fascinating tour. The mines themselves are awe inspiring and beautiful and the tour guides are very welcoming. You can book a midday English tour or if you come at another time, they give you a tablet with a translation!
Anthea Hill — Google review
A beautiful site to visit, very unique and very well maintained. Just a pity that the guided tour was exclusively in French. Very low price. It is essential to book in advance.
Stefano Bertini — Google review
Only guided tours which are usually done in French. Tours in other languages are available, but only if a guide for the target language is available on the day you want to take a tour. Reservations for all tours are recommended so ask for a foreign language guided tour at the time you make the reservation. If there is only a French tour available, the ticket office will give you a nice 4 page summary in your chosen language to read before the tour starts. I recommend getting to the site a half hour or more in order to read the guide and take photos. No photos allowed inside the mines for security reasons. Great tour for anyone over the age of 10. Younger kids might not enjoy it too much. Bring a jacket or sweatshirt. It's around 9C inside. Our tour guide was great. She did some fun and interesting question and answer sessions and had great stories to tell. Well worth seeing. The ochre galleries and history of the site are amazing.
Ashley — Google review
40km of the old mines. Exciting tour that will open eyes on the production of the rubber, paint and mushrooms. Yes yes, mushrooms. If your kids like Minecraft, they will enjoy it. Tons of true stories and legends that goes through the 90 years and beyond. The place is must visit during the very hot day to take an advantage of the 10-13 C stable degrees right inside the hill. The excursion will take around 1.5 hours. For a left handed person there is a special benefit :-) Go there to know, why :-)
Stanislav Degtjarjov — Google review
Our visit to the mines was definitely memorable. The guide was incredibly friendly and was able to answer all questions in flawless English. We learned a lot about the process of extracting ocher from the ground. I would recommend this attraction to everyone. It is fun for all ages, and is relatively inexpensive.

Wonderfull artist, experience and pieces of art. We bought a little painting to bring home with us. I love electronic and mechanic components stuck on the canvas and the use of colors from Roussillon caves. Thanks a lot Tapiezo from your time with us. Bon Voyage.
Davide Rosato — Google review
What a wonderful little gallery right in the heart of beautiful Roussillon. Tapiezo is so warm and welcoming and we loved his take on life - ‘don’t limit yourself with unnecessary rules and restrictions’. Bought a gorgeous clay dog who is winging his way back to Aus.
Kathy Chapman — Google review
Tapiézo is a really accomodating and hospitable artist, his shop in Roussillon is stunning and one peculiar thing about his art is that it can be touched, photographed and played with, which is pretty uncommon in most places. We had a lovely talk with him and he's a really lively person who enjoys explaining his art to others and listening as well. Thank you Tapiézo for the lovely visit
Folco Ferraris — Google review
Today I walked into Tapiézo's art gallery by chance, and it was the highlight of my day - maybe the highlight of my week! His art is lively, unique, vibrant, and has a point of view - just like Tapiézo. And talking with him is just as much fun as looking at and appreciating his art. I highly recommend a visit to the gallery - you will leave feeling more joyful and inspired than before!

Ôkhra - Écomusée De L'ocre Roussillon is a fascinating place to visit, offering an exciting and enriching experience. Visitors can explore the old buildings and learn about the collection of ocher, guided by passionate individuals. The museum also features a painting workshop that is both interesting and informative. Families with young children can enjoy a short circular route around the factory, which is presented clearly with detailed information provided in a binder.
Wonderful site to learn about the industry that shaped the area. Mostly self-guided, so lots of opportunity for reflection. They are keeping the ochre heritage alive by working with young artists. The gift shop is a must-see for anyone who works with pigment and mixes their own colors. So glad we happened upon this place while visiting Rousillan.

The location is beautiful and the service professional. However, the food is below average and very overpriced. I returned nearly my entire main course (squid) and explained to the waitress that there was far too much vinegar in the dish. She took it back, but I wasn’t offered an alternative or any form of „compensation“. We were fully charged even for the poor main course. There are too many excellent restaurants in the region to choose this restaurant again.

But little lack of regularity overall (the cocktails all deserve a nice presentation at 20 € the glass), other than that, very good place for dinner or casual lunch;) (Original) Très bon service, et cuisine convenable. I very rarely leave reviews but I feel compelled to share some feedback on this occasion. The view is superb and the service is courteous and professional but the food is well below par at best. The poulet de Bresse was extremely rubbery (significantly overcooked) and the sauce tasteless and way too liquid. Absolute amateur hour. The starters were forgettable at best and only one desert (the olive oil ice cream dish) really stood out out of 6 dishes. I would strongly recommend you avoid this restaurant, there are many phenomenal establishments in the Luberon and this one is nothing short of a disgrace food wise (la Table du Mas is a 20 min drive and I can assure you you will leave this restaurant with memories to last you a lifetime for the same price). This hotel should really consider hiring a proper chef.

The restaurant is beautifully situated in the Luberon valley. I got the Provencal menu and enjoyed every course except for the lamb. It tasted like - well - nothing. It literally had no scent or taste. The thyme sauce helped. The service was professional, but it took until the end of the meal for the staff to become more friendly and personable. Overall, we had a lovely evening.

Our hotel’s concierge recommended this gastronomic restaurant and we were extremely pleased by our experience. We went for the menu and were delighted and surprised. So many great new things to try. Note: this is a gastronomic restaurant so the point is to go and try new things in new ways. If that doesn’t excite you, there’s also a more “brasserie” type restaurant just right below — a bit more accessible and less pricey. The view was lovely (lovely views not in short supply in Provence) but what stood out for us was the service — so much staff, so skilled and experienced, everyone taking pride in their work but not stuffy at all. I would absolutely return and I’d absolutely recommend to a friend.

Frankly, after 4 days, eating out at a range of 4.6 plus restaurants that we enjoyed without exception, this restaurant disappointed in all the key areas and left us with a deflated feeling. Elements of the food were superb, but then it was marred by incredibly tight portion control. 4 small to medium size prawns for an additional 20 Euro per person, and veal stew as the main course but very short on veal. The service was marred by a total inflexibility typified by "No you can't have cheese rather than a desert even if you are prepared to pay a little extra because the meal of the day includes a desert that you can't change." There were two boys serving who had obviously had their training at Burger King. As for the atmosphere, the terrace sounded great until you realised that it was surrounded by a wall that was higher than the eyesight of everyone sat down eating so the veiw was only of the hill tops some distance away. To cap it off the house wine by the glass was undrinkable. In summary, despite some nice tasting food, the restaurant failed in its primary goal of making the evening enjoyable

Lovely people but busy/very slow service. Veal cassoulet super tasty but starters didn’t match this experience. Overall a tad overpriced for the experience compared to other restaurants in the area.
Peter Bardsley — Google review
We had the most delightful day roaming Luberon and visiting the wineries & small quaint villages, meeting amazing & gracious locals. Unfortunately that could not be said of the hostess (?owner/maitre d) & the young man helping her tonight. We arrived around 9:30pm, without a reservation. After a little hesitancy by the young man, the hostess seated us to an outside table. So far so good. The minute they knew we didn’t speak or understand the French menu, it was apparent the service degraded terribly. Food was mediocre at best, no offer of water at the table with the meal, no salt/pepper on the table, ate a steak with a regular table knife, no steak knife given. I asked for a glass of rose wine, but no offer to replenish with another glass with the main meal. Would of asked for water or a steak knife if they came after dropping off the main dishes, but they never came back. Restaurant was not busy at that time, so no excuse for not checking up on us. I gave it 2 stars because the location & view were superb, service -2, food average. As the tourist season begins, Americans & non French speaking guests beware, you will not be welcome. Avoid this establishment, it’s only for French speaking citizens. Dr. Ashish Sanon

Servers were very nice and accomodating! Their food was execellent. We had ram steak and the day’s special, cod fish. I highly recommend.

Wonderful covered restaurant on the 2nd floor with a nice breeze. Helpful and nice staff with adequate English.

Came right around noon on a Tuesday without a reservation, and were seated right away. It’s not a big restaurant and it got quite busy given that there aren’t a ton of food options in the area, but turnover was relatively fast. It was an extremely hot summer day so we appreciated the mist sprayers on the rooftop terrace to help keep diners cool. Service was friendly and quick, they could speak English and had menus in English and German as well. Ordered three of the two course formule to share. To start, had the house salad, deviled eggs and ham and fig tartine. Mains were a pork tenderloin wrapped in puff pastry, cod fish in garlic crust and rump steak. Dishes were simple but all very tasty. Really liked the potatoes and sauces that accompanied the proteins which were cooked very well. Good food, good value and a solid no-frills spot if you’re in Roussillon.

The outside terrace is a lovely place to sit and watch the street activity below. The place filled up very quickly with families and couples. Service was fast and friendly. The food was excellent and plentiful. Good house wine. Dessert was decadent!

I never write reviews, but this restaurant deserves one. We were unsure where to eat in Roussillon but luckily found this amazing restaurant after searching on Google and actually sitting right in front of it. Homemade French cuisine with no unnecessary fuss. Just pure taste and very friendly service is exactly what we asked for and what we got. I had a steak well done (I thought well done was rare, but it was not a bad decision as it was crispy and juicy at the same time) and my girlfriend had a filet wellington, which she also liked very much. For dessert we shared a crème brûlée which was the best we had. Highly recommended place.

Outstandingly friendly restaurant, highly recommend for families. The staff are friendly, service is quick and the kids meal is fantastic. What stood out as well were the desserts - slightly retro orange sorbet inside an orange and a baked apple. We loved the orange so much that we made one at home after.

We loved this place! We had a reservation for 8 pm on a Thursday and are glad we did because it was bustling- always a good sign. The crusted pork was to-die-for. It was almost like a pork wellingnton with onions instead of mushrooms. The desserts were amazing too- I’d go back just for them. We don’t speak French but had no issues ordering or communicating. Highly recommend!

Nice spot for dinner in Rousillon. My wife and I went there on a Tuesday night (make reservations) and had the salad and goat cheese for starters and both had the cod for dinner. Everything was nicely done. Solid restaurant at a good cost. Service was great and friendly.

Restaurant Omma is a top-notch dining spot that serves breakfast, lunch, and dinner while providing a stunning view of the ever-changing colors of the ochre cliffs during sunset. The menu offers modern cuisine with inventive dishes and delicious sauces. With a limited selection of entrees and main courses, each dish is well-elaborated and paired with excellent wines. While slightly pricier than other local restaurants, the exceptional regional food, delightful atmosphere, and breathtaking valley views make it worth every penny.
Excellent meal. Fresh and tasty ingredients, very well prepared and presented. Great associations of tastes and flavours. Friendly and efficient service. Highly recommended.

I love this restaurant very much. It deserves a Michelin Star. I visited couple years ago but still remember the ambience very well with the view over the Ocher Trail. The food was amazing; fresh and delicious. Service was good. We had such a great lunch here.

Gorgeous restaurant with incredible food. We had the lunch menu and everything was incredible. The staff were so kind and helpful. They spoke both French and English. We brought our young baby in the pram and didn't have any problems. There were also two other families with young children there.

I almost never give five stars but the five stars aren’t even enough in this one. I will briefly describe my experience and tell you guys what we had. First we were greeted in a really nice way and were asked where we want to sit. Due to the fact my grandfather is a smoker we wanted to sit outside and they allowed him to smoke as long as nobody was sitting there. Then they had an English menu and we went for the three course meal with cheese. As a starter we had escargo and foie gras and the main dish was sweetbread and mishroom sauce. The dessert was a millefeuille with raspberries. All in all it was incredible delicious. Waiter were super attentive and the price was with 52 Euros for the full menu also okay. Including wine and Kir Royal we paid 304 Euros. But so far the restaurant only deserved 4.5 stars. The 0.5 and more comes from the breathtaking view ;) Only sad thing is, they only had Heineken and Kronenbourg. Guys, just get some good beers.

It locates in the small hotel we stayed in the center of Roussillon. I am amazed how good the food was. Both dinner and breakfast are super satisfying

This was the best meal we had in Provence. Inventive food with delicious sauces and layers of textures. I normally don’t order chicken in a restaurant but the description sounded so good and it was exceptional. We loved the trout gravalax, grilled octopus, and the desserts, too. Great service and spectacular view of the colorful hills. Not to be missed.

Lovely owner and management. They do great lunches that are fresh, easy on the eye and delicious.

The food was delicious, especially the lamb. Good service and attitude from the staff too. The reason the restaurant doesn't have a Michelin star is because the restaurant opened just 3 months ago, but the food is definitely Michelin level. Pleasurable experience. Definitely worth going.

Great food but very, very slow and unprofessional service. Our lunch went on for over 3 hours and they took forever to clear our plates. We asked if there was an option for children to have pasta, our server said no, and then we saw another table having pasta for their two kids. Beautiful view, great location, however the service needs work.

Amazing regional food , slightly reinvented . Just 3 entrees and 3 main dishes to chose from . All very well elaborated and paired with excellent wines . More expensive than regular restaurants in the area but food , atmosphere and amazing views over the valley make it very worthwhile . A place to come back for sure .

This restaurant, located inside the hotel, has a fabulous view of the multicolored cliffs that Roussillon is famous for. Happily, the food is as fabulous as the view and the dishes on the men are innovative. Unfortunately, the hotel reception person / restaurant hostess was unhelpful and rigid. Despite her, this restaurant is worth visiting.

Went for lunch during a workday. Service was extremely slow. Took ~15min until serving water; then another 15-20min until food; no bread in the meanwhile. We were starving. Received little attention from our waiter. Food came in small quantity, A- quality. A+ for view. Overall overpriced. Would expect significantly better service for supposedly the best restaurant in town.

The restaurant is under new management and it was a wonderful dining experience. From start to finish the service and the food were impeccable. Can’t wait to come back and try again and again the food. I really appreciated the emphasis on local products. Don’t miss out on the views!
