Cartagena

Cartagena is a port city and naval base in the Murcia region of southeast Spain. Founded by the Carthaginians around 220 B.C., the city boomed during the Roman period. Among its many Roman ruins are a 1st-century B.C. theater and Casa de la Fortuna, a villa with murals and mosaics. The Muralla Púnica (Punic Wall) interpretation center houses the remains of a 3rd-century B.C. defensive wall.

The Naval Museum Cartagena is a great place to learn about the navy history and see some amazing models of ships from the olden days. The staff are always happy to answer any questions, and there is also a little shop where you can buy souvenirs. It's well worth a visit for any family looking for an educational experience!
If you are in Cartagena and would like to know more about the history of this city, especially its naval past, don't miss the opportunity to visit this place. It would be equally interesting for the history buffs as well as ordinary tourists. The place is well organized and has very interesting exhibitions. Definitely recommend!

Great museum. Nice staff they will answer any question that you have. A little shop with a very nice guy that explained my son everything about the items in the museum.

A fantastic, very interesting place to visit. Free entry, although donations are welcomed.
Carolyn Bowen — Google review
Fantastic experience. There is no need to pay for entry but if you donate 3 euros you can visit the Naval Museum and the submarine museum around the corner. Lots of fantastic exhibits from Spain and around the world
L. McK — Google review
Always worth a visit. The staff are very helpful. The historical model ships are amazing.
Les Edwards — Google review
Great bit of Spanish naval history split between two buildings. Ensure you visit the second (and harder to find building) to see the first battery powered submarine commissioned in 1889. Entry by donation.
Shane Newton — Google review
Great experience. It is impressive to see the evolution of the Spanish navy and their great invention, the submarine.
Javier Ruiz — Google review
Friendly staff and although free exhibition recommend taking some cash for the donation box.
Road Less Traveled — Google review
Nice little museum about the Spanish and Cartagean naval history. Two separate buildings, the first is a bit more about the general naval history, the second mostly about the submarine that they have in the collection. Well worth an hour or two, payment is in the form of a donation and voluntary.
Sebastian Öberg — Google review
Small but interesting museum, could be better if some of the naval base was incorporated. Great collection of model ships. Don’t miss the submarine section just around the corner. Free to enter but can give a donation.
Chris Hart — Google review
Amazing experience. Really well laid out across both buildings. Closed Monday’s!
John Coyle — Google review
Took the opportunity to visit during the Museum Night weekend and was super impressed with the exhibits displayed. Overall a great exposure to the navy history with amazing range of ships and weapons from the olden days. Would definitely recommend families to visit as means of educational purposes!

Castle
Perched on a hill, Castillo de la Concepción is an iconic medieval castle offering stunning city views and housing a history center. Visitors can reach the site via a panoramic lift for a small fee or opt for a free uphill walk. The surrounding park area provides great vistas of the city and offers glimpses of the Roman Theatre from above.
We recently had the pleasure of visiting the Castillo de la Concepción in Cartagena, and I must say it was an experience that left us awe-inspired. This historic fortress, perched atop the Cerro de la Concepción, not only offers a captivating journey through time but also provides breathtaking panoramic views of the charming city below. Upon entering the castle grounds, we were immediately struck by the impressive preservation of the site. The meticulous restoration work has breathed new life into this centuries-old fortress, allowing visitors to truly appreciate its architectural grandeur and historical significance. The well-maintained pathways and informative signage throughout the castle contribute to a seamless exploration, offering a wealth of knowledge about the castle's rich past. The highlight of our visit was undoubtedly the stunning views from the castle's vantage points. The panoramic vistas of Cartagena and its surrounding landscapes are nothing short of spectacular. Whether you're a history enthusiast or simply seeking a picturesque spot to capture the essence of Cartagena, Castillo de la Concepción delivers on both fronts. The castle's strategic location not only served as a military stronghold in the past but also provides a perfect vantage point to appreciate Cartagena's modern cityscape, the bustling harbor, and the Mediterranean Sea stretching into the horizon. We found ourselves spending a significant amount of time simply absorbing the beauty of the surroundings. In addition to its historical and visual appeal, the castle's well-maintained gardens and courtyards offer a serene atmosphere for a leisurely stroll. The combination of lush greenery and historic architecture creates a peaceful retreat within the heart of the city. In conclusion, a visit to Castillo de la Concepción is a must for anyone exploring Cartagena. It seamlessly weaves together history, culture, and natural beauty, providing a comprehensive and unforgettable experience. Whether you're a solo traveler, a history buff, or a family looking for an enriching outing, this fortress on the hill is sure to leave an indelible mark on your Cartagena journey.

Interesting to visit, but nothing spectacular. The view on Cartagena, its port and both open air theatres (the modern and the ancient one) from the castle terrace / little train parking spot is magnificent. And the castle peacocks were amusing, but that's all. Save your castle ticket fees for a beer, you won't miss anything if you don't visit the castle top. Also, when we tried to enter the castle from the street (at the panoramic view structure with the elevator), the elevator was out of order, but you still needed to buy the ticket. So, go for a walk on your own from behind the Roman theatre, see the view of the city, say hello to the peacocks, and go for a beer / coffee / tea in the city. Enjoy!

Extremely impressive castle with epic views across Cartagena. Sitting atop a natural crag, this castle is like Masada, dominating the area and providing a safe haven for the defenders. Like Masada, the water supply is by massive cisterns rather than a well. This castle would’ve been extremely difficult to attack! Mostly level access with lifts and ramps.

Do you have a prior reservation!!! The lift is closed!!! I wonder how can People with wheelchair though have reservation or tickets get there if the main entrance, I mean the main road which is the only entrance where you can drive in with your car, is closed!!!!! I was sad because I couldn't see the castle along with the disabled man who was with me due to these sircumstances!!!!! Well I hope that you won't pass such uncomfortable feeling.... Sorry again for the negative feedback... I hope you the best of luck

A hilltop spot with great views of the harbor and the Roman amphitheater. You have 270 degrees views of Cartagena and many of its sites. The view of the old and new amphitheater is very impressive.

amazing views of the city. there’s a small museum in the castle about the history of cartagena, costs a few euro. it’s a quite a trek uphill there’s a panoramic lift up to the castle that you have to get tickets for. peacocks live on the castle grounds too. lovely walkway and murals

It's worth a visit. Beautiful view and lots of history. The park is well kept and maintained. It's a lovely venue to leisurely walk around coming off a cruise. Not much to do except to learn about history. We only wish there were some bars or bistro shops. There's a bending machine to grab snacks and water. The bathrooms are clean, and overall, we had a lovely day.

Not sure if the museum and the castle itself are worth the fee collected. Descriptions to some of the exhibits are something to be frowned upon. Hopefully it's a bad job of a translator. The views are definitely worth climbing up though. Also there's a gorgeous peacock that can be spotted around: probably the largest one I've ever seen ;) And it's not afraid of people.

This attraction is high up on a hill and it's a uphill walk for at least 30 min. It is a fairly strenuous hike up the road and sidewalk up to the castle. You can see all areas of the city from the top of the castle tower. You can see the old Roman Theater and bull fighting ring from the castle.
Stephen Arlaud — Google review
Incredible views to the port of Cartagena, the city and the Roman Theatre. You can see interesting ships that drift away from the coast - rescue, military, and also expensive yachts. Don’t miss the 3D shows inside the castle, they are fun). I recommend to visit the castle before Halloween - it’s a chance to see how the it is decorated for celebrations.

The Palacio Consistorial de Cartagena, located on Plaza del Ayuntamiento, is a stunning modernist architectural gem that has stood for over a century. Built in 1907 to replace the former town hall due to the mining boom, this triangular palace boasts a unique design with rounded corners. The building underwent restoration in the past decade and continues to be in use today.
Very nice modern Architecture building with interesting history and great story about each corner in its interior I recommend visiting it , tour guide are really nice and can speak different languages and the tour cost only 1€ they do one each hour

Dated 1907, this historic building is in constant use to this day. Built and designed in an art deco fashion, the building is full of grand staircases, crystal chandeliers, light fixtures and intricate plaster and wood work. The marquetry is phenomenal! A guided tour is 1€ per person and is well worth the time.

I love this place. It has been recently restaured, which took years and years. It's beautiful both inside and outside. The staff isn't too kind, though. Even if you are celebrating a wedding ceremony there, they won't make an effort for you.

The Gran Hotel de Cartagena is a stunning example of Art Nouveau and Art Deco architecture from the late 19th and early 20th centuries. It stands as an elegant monument to the area's economic development, reflecting the opulence of the bourgeoisie during that time. Inspired by modernist Viennese and French architecture, this beautiful building is just one of many notable Art Nouveau masterpieces in Cartagena.
