Podgorica

Podgorica is the capital city of Montenegro. Its rivers and bridges include the modern Millennium Bridge over the Morača River, and the stone bridge spanning the Ribnica River. The centuries-old Clock Tower, built by the Turks, dominates the old town. In the Zeta-Skadar valley south of the city, Lake Skadar National Park is home to medieval monasteries, beaches, and birds like the Dalmatian pelican.

Bridge
Sights & Landmarks
The Millenium Bridge, a renowned cable-stayed bridge stretching across the Morača River, was constructed in 2005 and is 173 meters long. Located in the heart of Podgorica, this modern and splendid infrastructure serves both vehicles and pedestrians. For an optimal view of the bridge, one can visit the adjacent pedestrian bridge or take a stroll through the surrounding parks. The nocturnal ambiance is especially captivating as colorful lights illuminate the structure while spotlessly clean waters flow underneath it.
One of the attractions of the Podgorica city, a place where Millennium run participants start and finish their races. The Bridge has its functions during the other days. Construction is interesting in terms of how it is made and how it looks. Nice to see it if travel in Podgorica.

Nice to see the bridge in real. Some issues to find a parking place ( don‘t understand how to pay because service was down) but loved to see it also from lake side

Really nice view on the bridge. But nothing too special about it.

Modern and magnificent bridge in the new center of Podgorica. It is relative big and used for cars and pedestrians. Better view is from a pedestrians bridge just next to. It also worth a visit at night to see the bridge lights. Quite colourful. River below the bridge looks clean.

I wanted to share with you these images of the clouds dancing with the sky. It was beautiful. If you are in Podgorica, don't pass by without stopping by.

Beautiful bridge, it's 10 to 20 minutes walking distance from the old square

A symbolic bridge that also offers great views on both sides.

Cool bridge, hasn't collapsed so it's doing its job 👍

Beatiful bridge on downtown. There are several small bridges near this bridge. Most locals use small side bridges for walking.
Tom Wilson — Google review
The bridge was designed by Marjan Pipenbaher from the Slovenian company Ponting Bridges and Mladen Ulićević, a professor at Faculty of Civil Engineering in Podgorica. It was built by the Slovenian company Primorje, and opened on 13 July 2005, Montenegro's National Day. It quickly became one of the city's most prominent landmarks. The bridge is 173 metres long, and the pylon soars 57 m above the roadbed. Twelve cables support the roadway deck, while twenty-four more are attached to the counterweights, creating an imposing image. The construction of the bridge began in 2005, and the building cost was approximately 7 million euros. The roadway carries two lanes of traffic and a pedestrian walkway in each direction. The bridge connects the Boulevard of Ivan Crnojević in the city centre and July 13 street in the new part of city, thus relieving the other congested bridges connecting the city center with the densely populated districts over the Morača river.

Monastery
Sights & Landmarks
The Dajbabe Monastery, a Serbian Orthodox Christian monastery established in 1897, is situated within a cave on the Dajbabe hill. Despite its significance as an important landmark, there are no signs leading to it from Podgorica and one must navigate through narrow suburban roads. The exterior of the modern-looking house belies the impressive catacombs within which hold a great deal of history.
Very nice place! U have space to walk everywhere, and the caves are just absolutely brilliant. Really a fantastic place!

A really unique monastery. Easy to get to from Podgorica. They have a small gift shop as well on the premises. You enter a foyer before entering a series of caves. The caves form a cross and there is a great legend about you can easily find online. Truly a unique and breathtaking experience.

The Dajbabe Monastery was dedicated to the Assumption of Mother Mary. The monastery was founded in 1897. In the beginning, only the space of the cave was used as a sanctuary, with the plan to be expanded later with chapels. The visible part of the church is situated outside the cave, depicting a spacious entrance porch with two belfries. The Dajbabe Monastery also possesses a reliquary with the relics of St. Simeon of Dajbabe. The monastery itself is beautifully maintained. One can't help but feel peace and quiet there.

Only a 5 minute detour if your destination is podgorica after landing. A must see if you're close in my opinion. Very fascinating way of building a small monastery literally into rock. Also the garden is vey well kept, beautiful and cozy.

From Podgorica there are no signs to this monastry whatsoever. You get there with narrow suburban road and there is nothing along the road that indicates an important landmark is nearby. Once there a house among hundreds of olive trees emerges, looking quite modern and uninteresting. Inside however there are impressive catacombs that hide a lot of history. A guy working in a shop was polite enough to give us 15-minute history lesson of the place.

It is a bit difficult to get there but it is a nice place. Go inside the church and you can enter the caves with old paintings on the wall.

Beautiful ... Saint Simon and Saint George

Monastery Dajbabe is located near Podgorica and is dedicated to Holy Mother of God. The monastery is situated on hill in the village of the same name and has a very interesting history. The monastery interior is buried in the ground, and its interior space is made up of caves. In the monastery are the remains of the saint Simeon Dajbabski. There is a legend about how the monastery was made. In 1890 a Saint came to a boy and told him to move with the sheeps, because he stands on a holy place, and that in one cave there were his relics and remains. He also told him to build a church in that place. The boy told him that he was orphaned without a father and mother and that he was not able to build a church. The saint told him to talk about this miracle, which he did. He goes to the monastery Ostrog, and there he met the monk Simeon who believed him. Simeon came to Dajbabe in 1896., and in a half a year makes Monastery. The bones of mysterious Saint where never found. But he spoke to Simeon and told him not to search for them, because when the time is right he will show the place of his rest. It is believed that these are the remains of the monk Ilarion, first bishop in this region.

There is a cave inside that splits into different arms each serving as a chapel.

Very interesting, however to be honest I was surprised with poor quality of frescoes on walls of Cave especially in comparison with other monasteries like Ostrog

Arenas & Stadiums
Podgorica City Stadium, situated 8km southeast of Podgorica, is an intriguing wine cellar operated by Plantaze, Montenegro's largest wine company. While not as expansive as Western European stadiums, it still serves as a commendable venue in Eastern Europe. The stadium features bars and a souvenir shop on the western side. It holds significance as one of Ex-Yu's iconic stadiums and is renowned for its attractive and compact design.
One of the iconic stadiums of Ex-Yu.
Sinisha Pavleski — Google review
very bad stadium and old and dirty !! the seats are completely dirty inside ! no renovations at all and no maintenance at all. Don't get surprised if one day the whole stadium will collapse from the crowd...Safety and security is Zero here. the organizers of the matches are terrible in organization ! I was in Montenegro Serbia match one time and all gates are closed and they open only one gate before few minutes and all people get queezed from the crowd and enter from one Gate only...terrible organization! Balkan organization....no surprise! Plus all restaurants and coeffeshops in that street close during and before the match as they are scared from the other supporters ! catastrophic really ! it's like we are on war or invasion...honestly I never see in many countries and towns where the stadium is in the heart of city and where all traffic got blocked !! only in Montenegro! this Stadium should be destroyed and make new stadium in area far at least 5 to 7 KM from the center !
Peggy. P — Google review
Nice reasonably sized stadium with glorious views from the west stand. Only issue was very dusty seats and lack of open club shop to buy merch.
Niall M — Google review
Small stadium that is not really comfortable for crowded events - not enough seats and tickets. Seats were very dirty and some fans were also too impolite.

Churches & Cathedrals
The Church of the Holy Heart of Jesus in Podgorica showcases communist-style architecture, also known as brutalist architecture, which predominates due to WWII bombings. This architectural style emphasizes minimalism by utilizing bare materials and angular geometric shapes for a simplistic and structural look. The church exudes a grotesque ambiance akin to an industrial setting, resembling an industrial church.
Really special church in brutalist style, nice play with warm light and cold concrete contrast. The front door was closed when we arrived, we rang the doorbell on the other side, they let us in and kindly gave us information about the church.
Azur — Google review
Definitely worth going! The whole place has a grotesque feeling, you could call it an industrial church! The people running the place are really nice and the children that are at the area are very nice, talkative, playful and seem to have a good time living here too! Must visit in beautiful Podgorica!

We couldnt get inside the building.

Really interesting building - brutalist style cathedral. Situated in between a busy road and railroad tracks. Didn’t look open so wasn’t able to look inside.

Hidden brutalist church in the city. Worth a visit!
xavi galindo — Google review
The church is worth a visit if you are a fan of Brutalist architecture. It may or may not be open to look inside and it is a 20 - 25 minute walk (each way) along a busy, noisy, non-scenic road, from the Karver Bookstore. I think it was worth the walk but be aware. You should be able to get into the yard and walk around. I was not able to get inside. But maybe I just needed to try more doors. Part of it was a school and I didn’t want to bother the teachers.
Ian Strain-Seymour — Google review
Miss the Church of my childhood!! Never forget all the kids used to get gifts on Christmas Eve!
Rolind Nikprelaj — Google review
I don’t like the architecture of the church, it looks like a Titanic. It is not finished yet. Inprefer traditional catholic churches
Edin H. — Google review
Very kind Salesian priests explaind, it is one of the first churches built in Yugoslavia, and the government did not allow traditional style. So the brutalistic churc is a reminder of the time and regime of the past. It is amazing to see how much work has been done since the Salesians came in town.
