Hillerod

Hillerød is a city in Denmark, north of Copenhagen. The 17th-century Frederiksborg Castle lies on 3 islets and has baroque gardens. Inside the castle, the Museum of National History evokes 500 years of Danish history with portraits and furniture. To the east, Hillerød Town Museum has vintage printing presses and replicas of 19th-century streets. North of the city are the trails of Grib Forest.

Nature & Parks
Frederiksborg Castle is an impressive 17th-century fortress-palace situated on the banks of Slotso lake in Hillerod, Denmark. The palace boasts stunning Dutch Renaissance architecture and features Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque elements. It now houses a museum of Danish and royal history showcasing over 80 rooms filled with beautiful furniture, tapestries, historical paintings and art pieces. The central courtyards are accessible for free along with the beautifully manicured baroque gardens.
A little bit off the beaten path, but easy to get to by train, especially with the Copenhagen Card. There’s a nice walk through the park to get there from the train station, and a gorgeous lake and gardens, too. The castle itself is impressive! Definitely worth the trip, especially if you have the city card.

Spectacular castle experience. The audio tour was informative and not too long. Bags are not allowed inside, but they have lockers available. The building is cold and quite dark, so keep your coat on. Staff was friendly. Organ concert was at 13:30 and quite cool to see. We spent 3.5 hours there. We recommend that you get there right at opening, because you can definitely use all 4 hours they were open. (Limited hours in January). Take a spare battery to be sure your phone stays charged for photos and audio tour. Keep your coat on, because the castle is relatively cold. The museum offered flashlights which came in handy. The castle store was pretty good. After we were kicked out at closing time, we enjoyed walking down the town’s walking street and getting something to eat, on our way back to the train station.
Ivan Wolthuis — Google review
So many rooms to walk through, so many paintings and decorations and everything is in very good shape. The chapel is top notch and the original Carl Bloch paintings hangs in one room. They are stunning! The castle garden is also well worth a visit.
Mattias Norin — Google review
Definitely worth the visit. It’s such a stunning castle with so many rooms and paintings. Has so many history for many centuries. You can take the train line A from Copenhagen central station for 38 minutes with around 10€ and you will then walk around 17 minutes to reach the castle. The scenery from the lake is breathtaking. I definitely recommend visiting it as it’s a must see while you are visiting the Denmark.
Noha Afifi — Google review
Gorgeous Renaissance castle located in Hillerød, a city just outside of Copenhagen. Very easy to get there with train. You can visit the castle inside but outside with its gardens is imperdible.
Lorena Olvera — Google review
One of the best castles in the area. Excellent art and history. Worth the trip!!! Well preserved historical site with beautiful grounds to explore too. I used the Copenhagen Card to enter, a worthwhile investment.
Keith Flynn — Google review
The Castle is very impressive and the exhibition about the Danish royals is great too. It rained, so we didn't explore the garden but I really liked the 3rd floor with more modern art.
Svend Nielsen — Google review
This was the best castle we visiting out of all the castles in Copenhagen - it is beautiful and well maintained - and the gardens were lovely! We are so glad we chose to do a day trip here. Very pleasant. Make sure you check out the cafe on the grounds for lunch, it was delicious.
Kailey Parks — Google review
Nice castle in small town 40 minutes from Copenhagen. A little bit expensive, but I guess a lot goes into maintaining the castle and the gardens. The gardens are free, so that’s great. The castle itself has a lot of paintings and beautiful woodwork. Recommend if you have a free slot in your time here in Denmark.
Victor Correra — Google review
Beautiful castle with a wonderful mix of both modern art, photography, sculptures and historical paintings. They got a few activities for kids - and an audio guide to the museum. I really recommend it and would suggest that you spend at least two hours there.
David Rasmussen — Google review
Amazing castle! Full of stuff to see inside and outside. The rooms are filled with historical furniture, paintings, etc. I personally loved the church. I think the entrance is about 75 dkk so great price! You can still go around the castle in the beautiful gardens and around the lake for free though. Plus, I love the square with the restaurants; always end up there after our stroll!
Christoforos Barakat — Google review
For sure 5 star! The castle itself is glorious. But the garden..it is just fantastic. There are a lot to see there. We spent about 3.5 hours there and still, we were not tired of it. Will definitely go back to this place
Fatemeh Makouei — Google review
What an extravagant castle. There are countless small details to note while walking through here. The chapel was gorgeous I could spend hours just looking at it. There’s also a nice ferry ride behind the castle that you can take.
SiQing Xu — Google review
This is a really opulent castle and it was very beautiful to walk around. The building and its decorations were very intricate. But the museum plaques will only teach you about the portraits on the walls, and most rooms are empty except for the paintings.
Priscilla Zhang — Google review
Absolutely worth the visit. Can take the blue line, included in the large metro ticket. Lovely setting, fascinating architecture. The great room and chapel really stand out for their grandeur. The original Carl Bloch paintings were moving and the amount of history contained in the castle delightful. The grounds were lovely to walk. Situated close to shops and restaurants to make a whole day of it

Beautiful castle. I biked to Hillerød from Copenhagen and I found this hidden jem. Definitely worth of visiting if you are visiting Zealand. Also the city center seemed inviting for a lunch or a coffee.
manos dimogerontakis — Google review
Highly recommend visiting the castle, it’s a short trip from Copenhagen. Ticket prices are very reasonable for what the landmark has to offer, and it’s a beautiful, interesting place. I’ve especially enjoyed the sensory rooms because I found them quite unique, I’ve never experienced such an addition in historical spots like this one. Staff was super friendly as well. Great experience overall!

Lovely day trip from Copenhagen! This is worth going to see, paid £10 to get in. Loads of history here and the walk around the castle is so worth doing. We really appreciated the doorman who was lovely.
Posie Grotier — Google review
An amazing castle that takes you to the past. Preserved in an excellent way, combining Danish History and culture, great facilities in all aspects...
Tony Papanicolaou — Google review
The place is amazing, magnificent, with a nice, peaceful walk around the castle and the gardens. But there is a bug negative for us. Even though they have an audio guide and an app, there is so little history told in these guides. All they talk about are various personalities from Denmark and their paintings, whereas they should talk more about the great history of Denmark and of the castle. The rooms are a bit empty, filled with paintings mostly. Feels a bit like gallery.
Jaroslav Mida — Google review
We came to see the original Carl Bloch paintings of the life of Jesus Christ, in the King’s Chapel. They are beautiful. The Castle is amazing. The Great Hall is covered with beautiful tapestries.
Chris Cummings — Google review
Must visit!!! a place with breathtaking architecture and a rich historical background. It is advisable to familiarize yourself with its history beforehand and engage with the knowledgeable guides available on-site. The guiders are known for their patience and willingness to provide detailed information upon inquiry. Additionally, make sure to visit the gallery located on the top floor and explore the offerings at the shop during your visit.

I would like to say, this castle is one of the beautiful castles in the world, Situated on 3 Islands and surrounded by a lake and beautiful gardens, it's simply spectacular and breathtaking. Unlike other other famous great castles I have visited in Europe, we were able to get as close as to the display, artworks, furniture etc...free to roam and explore at our own pleasure. This castle is absolutely worth a visit or must visit while in Copenhagen, it's really something!

Lovely camping in the city of Hillerød. The castle is a 15 minute walking distance and absolutely worth it. Train to Copenhagen 20 minute walking distance. Camping has a neat clean kitchen, clean sanitair and our dog was welcome. Although you are in the centre, the camping itself is peaceful and quiet. Would definitely go there again.

(Translated by Google) What a wonderful, spacious spot we had (selected in consultation with a patient owner on a golf cart). Dog Pien was also allowed to join in 😀. Unbelievable what peace, space, cleanliness, friendliness and, above all, atmosphere we experienced, so close to the town and the castle (both within walking distance). It can rightly be called a paradise. Thanks for this great experience. Kees, Tineke and dog Pien from IJMUIDEN.

What a relaxed and easy stay in Hillerod camping. Our daughter spent the whole stay playing at the play area with other kids. It is so nice to have all facilities to cook and eat at the common area. Outside shower is just great. Bathroom and toilets are new and well taken care of. The owners are giving a full attention to the campsite which makes it one of the best campsite in Denmark.
Cem Ozlem — Google review
(Translated by Google) The atmosphere at this campsite felt a bit mixed; So much care was taken in how clean and beautifully cared for everything is, that we felt a little restrained from possibly accidentally making something dirty. On the other hand, the decoration was very cozy. We really liked the common areas, both the kitchen and the living room. The kitchen was very complete too! It was also very nice to sleep in the hiker's hut on good, clean beds, with blackout curtains! An absolute negative is the shower, which turns off every half minute, after which you have to turn it on again ... luckily there were also family showers where this was not the case.

Great campground with beautiful touches and details hard to find in any other campground. The service is very friendly by the family that owns it. The value for money is definitely worth. The town is very nice and the castle was another surprise for us. Good food, good places and friendly people. On one night a local musician played nice music for all the camp. Very clean, very convenient. Grear kids playground. Much recommended for a short or long stay.

Geweldige camping! (Translated by Google) Great campsite! Taken care of down to the last detail. Heerlijke camping! (Translated by Google) Wonderful campsite! Beautifully cared for, beautifully situated in the town, yet a green oasis of peace. Beautiful plants and flowers everywhere. (Translated by Google) We stayed here for a week (we will definitely come again!), a quiet, nice campsite with a range of beautiful plants and very friendly owners/employees! To create atmosphere, the candles were lit on every field, near the toilet, etc. around 8 p.m. The town of Hillerod is beautiful, also because of the castle and the beautiful gardens. In the vicinity of several castles. Good to explore by bike. Day trips to Helsingør / Copenhagen are easy. Thnx for the nice stay and see you again!

Wow, this is the nicest camping I have ever stayed on. Immaculately clean washrooms, (indoor and) outdoor showers, well kept grass to camp on, free electricity. But what makes it special is the large amount of tropical plants and flowers on the camping, all the seats and tables between them that you can use to eat your meals, the large and nicely decorate kitchen and living room where you can eat, sit, play games or watch television. There is also a community pool nearby where you can get a free entry for. The owners (Danish and Dutch) really have an eye for detail. One playground for kids with two trampolines. I didn’t see any ‘fixed’ or seasonal residents (I never like it when campings have fixed year-round residents). Stayed here for three days, loved it!
(Translated by Google) We chose this campsite because it was a maximum half-hour drive from Copenhagen and had good reviews. We had a cottage for 4 nights. The house was immaculate and spotlessly clean and fully equipped: dishwasher, TV, radio with Bluetooth, induction hob, oven, WiFi, two bedrooms, comfortable beds, and bathroom with underfloor heating (but we didn't need it). Location was also great. You can walk to the city center or to one of the enormous supermarkets in ten minutes. The town has a nice cozy center with terraces and a great view of a beautiful palace. That palace is great to visit and you can enjoy yourself for hours inside. We ended up liking this even more than Copenhagen itself. Furthermore, there was sufficient space to play on the campsite, which is medium in size. The children had a great time around the sandbox and trampolines. Just outside the campsite there is also a large football field where you have plenty of space to play. Owners/staff were also very friendly. The house was really very expensive. Including bed linen and towels we spent over 225 euros per night (high season). That is a choice you make when you book, of course, but it was also noticeable that (perhaps because of this?) not all houses seemed to be rented. In addition, we were asked to pay the electricity costs separately, only a few euros, and you think why isn't that just part of the price? Small possible point for improvement: they have a nice terrace where you can sit. If they had turned it into a catering place, we would certainly have used it. In addition, the WiFi was unstable and continuously dropped out for us. Nevertheless, we had a great time here and the 5 stars are well deserved.

Very good camping. Clean and well organized. The owners really take care of the place and that’s visible in all the details.

(Translated by Google) First of all: Make a reservation if you want to camp here. Otherwise there is no room! Very difficult to give a review, because the owners run this campsite with a lot of love. And a bit too much. For example, you will be taken to your spot and the owner will decide where you should stand. She means this helpfully, but it is somewhat patronizing. There are many places without any form of separation. The sanitary facilities are far from adequate for the number of guests. So that means waiting, a lot of waiting... Or in the outdoor shower🧊❄️ However, the sanitary facilities are spotless and smell wonderful. The showers are nice, spacious, and wonderfully warm. The environment is cozy and there are nice things and flowers everywhere. You have to love that, my husband finds this very disturbing on the counter near the dishes😏. You have to take off your shoes in the sanitary facilities... That's something you have to like. Or should be possible, if you have difficulty walking... Tip for the owner: Make more sanitary facilities and give your guest some 'space'. For us, once was more than enough!

Really attractive place in Hillerød locality. Nice infrastructure with all the needed amenities. Spacious parking available also charging stations. Royal stage contains larger halls and it can easily handle thousands of guests in a day. Location contains multiple business in site such as gym, club, restaurant etc. A cozy place and a great choice for any events. Recommend to choose royal stage if you’re looking to find a place for indoor events.

Adequate, but not particularly comfortable facility for hosting plays. The auditorium was stifling, there was either no air-conditioning or it needed servicing. It did the job, in the same way a school hall would do the job but isn't a patch on a purpose built theatre.
