Nagaur Fort

Mentioned on
Fortress
Historical landmark
I stopped at Nagaur Fort with no expectations, just to break up the drive between Pushkar and Gajner. I was beyond impressed by what I saw. Within the defensive fortifications lie very impressive and well conserved palace and gardens. We were fortunate to have a very well-informed and thorough guide. The town of Nagaur does not make for a satisfying destination by itself as there appears to be no tourism infrastructure whatsoever (by which I mean a hotel which attempts to offer western standards or a cafe in a pleasant environment where a cold beer or a decent cup of coffee might be served) but, if driving through, I think the fort is well worth a stop!

Visited this majestic and beautiful fort palace in 2019. The name Nagaur stems from "Nag" meaning snake. The fort is said to be built by the descendants of the nagvanshi kshatriyas. The fort was conquered many times and the ownership passed on to several kingdoms. Ultimately the fort was reclaimed by the royal rulers of Mewar and now is under the Mehrangarh Trust. Nagaur Fort is among the most beautiful forts we ever visited. The efforts they have taken to restore the fort interiors with natural materials is noteworthy. The palace displays genius architecture of the ancient times including Persian water bath, underground fountain in an arid region and cooling systems, among a few. Haadi rani mahal, Abha Mahal, Deepak mahal, open fountain area and the gazebos are among the most striking structures of this huge fort. A part of the fort has converted into a luxurious heritage hotel. In spite of the maintenance and the efforts to keep it alive, the entry fee isn't high, unlike the Mehrangarh Fort of Jodhpur. Generally, you don't need a guide within the premises, but we did hire one, who was a staff member of the fort administration and showed us places that were closed to public. Do add this under rate gem to your travel itinerary if you are around Jodhpur or Bikaner. You will fall in love with history.

The Nagaur Fort, located in the city of Nagaur in Rajasthan, has a rich history dating back to the 4th century. Originally built by the Nagavanshi dynasty, it was later renovated and expanded by various rulers including the Ghaznavids, Pratiharas, and Ghurids. In the 12th century, it came under the control of the Rathore Rajputs. The fort played a significant role in the battles and conflicts of Rajasthan's history. It served as a strategic stronghold due to its location along the trade routes between Gujarat and Delhi. Over the centuries, the fort underwent several renovations and expansions, reflecting the architectural styles of different periods. Today, it stands as a testament to Rajasthan's rich cultural and architectural heritage.

There is a time to visit the fort it's morning 8:00 am to 11:30 am. It's a normal fort not too huge. There are 4-5 mandirs on the back side wall of the fort. There is no entry ticket. There is also car parking inside the fort. There is no restriction to take photos, we take our tripod with us to take photos and no one stops us. It takes max 1 hrs to see the fort. There is nothing inside it. There is no museum or antique it's just a normal fort. Outside the fort there is a huge market for shopping.

What an Bad experience at Fort! It's seriously well taken care of, kudos to the authorities for preserving it so well. And I totally appreciate the outside food rule – Not keeps the place super clean. Walking around, but they cannot be a bit pricey. Still, the views and vibe make it woristh it. The entry no fee is reasonable for Indian adults, and getting a guide is worth it for sure. They charge in group of 4. Audio guides are not available if you want to go with it. Sure, the initial climb is a bit steep, but they've got handrails to help out. Paid parking is available at the designated parking space.

Nagaur Fort is one of the best hidden gems in the City of Naguaur in the Jodhpur Bikaner Highway. The Kings Chanbers in the palace right in the centre of the fort is worth a visit. It would take approximately 2 to 3 hours to see the Palace and take a guided tour. There are options to stay in the palace as well. The best part of the fort is that even though it's in the centre of the city of Nagaur, it's very quiet inside the palace with almost no honking and distractions. The fort overall needs more restoration work, but the palace is a must visit.
