What an ancient Marvel. It's a small temple carved out of a single rock. It's more than 1000 years old. It is under the archeological survey of India. They are maintaining the property very well and that must be said. The lawns are beautifully set and maintained. There is no entry fee. Just enter the visitors name in the register. But I don't know why there are no people to visit. It is less crowded all the time. Needs more publicity for the place. There is no dedicated parking area. But there is space outside beside the road. It's easily findable and very near to vizhinjam junction and ksrtc bus station. Just walkable distance.

Vizhinjam Cave Temple is an 8th century AD Hindu temple at Vizhinjam, near Trivandrum in southern Kerala, India. The granite cave encloses a one-celled shrine with a loose sculpture of Vinadhara Dakshinamurti. The outer wall of the cave depicts unfinished reliefs of Siva as "Tripurantakara" on the left and as "Nataraja" with Parvati on the right (the unfinished Pallava dvarapalakas. The temple is located about 17 kilometers from Trivandrum city centre. Vizhinjam served as headquarters of the Ay kings who ruled the southern parts of Kerala in the 8th century. Considered to be the smallest rock-cut shrine in southern India, the Vizhinjam Rock-cut cave is dated to back to 8th century. The shrine has a central cell with an independent sculpture of Dakshinamurthy and on either side of the cell are unfinished sculptures of Siva and Parvathi. It is believed to be one of the earliest rock-cut cave temples in Kerala. This rock cut cave is now a protected monument under the control of the Archaeological Survey of India since 1965. Southern Kerala’s most beautiful natural rock formation can be found at the Vizhinjam caves in Thiruvananthapuram district. These rock-cut sculptures date all the way back to the 18th century and are located to the south of Kovalam junction. The temple is believed to date back to the 8th century, constructed by carving into a single rock. Visitors are required to fill out an entry book before entering, with no additional formalities. It is noteworthy that this historical site falls under the purview of the Archaeological Department of India.

Nice and calm place. Its a simple park like space with a great historic monument. A temple carved in a single rock. Built in 8th century AD. Maintained so well. If they gave colour or change the information board, it will be useful to read and help a lot to understand the history and importance behind it. Now its too difficult to read.
Nithin Raj — Google review
It was built around 7-8 century. Carved from a single rock, and it's incomplete. Usually no one notice this place very much. Well protected historical place. No entry fee, the entry is totally free. Situated near the road side so there is no place for proper parking.

The Rock Cut Cave Shiva Temple is an architectural marvel nestled in the heart of a rocky landscape, providing a unique and spiritually enriching experience. Carved into the natural rock formations in 8th century, the temple's intricate design and historical significance make it a captivating destination for devotees and history enthusiasts alike. The temple's location amidst the serene surroundings adds to its charm, offering a peaceful retreat for meditation and worship. The cool, dimly lit interiors create an atmospheric and contemplative space, enhancing the spiritual ambiance. The ancient carvings depicting various deities and mythological scenes showcase the craftsmanship of a bygone era, adding an element of cultural richness to the temple. The well-preserved nature of the rock-cut architecture speaks to the enduring legacy of this sacred site. However, for those willing to make the journey, the Rock Cut Cave Shiva Temple offers a unique and rewarding experience, blending spirituality with architectural excellence in a setting that resonates with tranquility and historical significance. Vizhinjam Rock Cut Temple is a unique piece of 8th century history which all South Indians can be very proud of. The small site is fenced off by ASI and maintained well since 1965. Not sure many Trivandrumites might know about this 1200 year old monument next to the Vizhinjam junction. During the Ay dynasty which ruled from Pampa to Kanyakumari from early Pallava period to 10th Century. There are very few monuments left today for this period. So the small Vizhinjam Rock Cut temple is very important site to appreciate their art and architecture. The granite outcrop, part of which is destroyed by the later generations, has the relief of Lord Siva as Kirathamurthy on one side and a unfinished relief of dancing Lord Siva and Parvathi. The temple faces east and enshrines a loose sculpture of Vinadhara Dhakshinamurthi. One wonders this amazing reliefs on granite have some resemblance with 7th Century Pallava monuments of Mamallipuram. Amazing place and a must visit site.

An amazing relic dating back half a millennium to the time of the Ay kings. Peaceful stands the rock temple in silent testimony to the faith of the kings who built it. Perhaps the did not have time or anticipated no long stay the place for anything more elaborate.

Prior to the ASI taking control and maintaining this old temple, an eight century monument was kept buried. Many of the earliest architectural remnants can be found in this seashore community. Although this location is immaculately kept, there are sadly few signboards and no allocated parking spaces. There isn't much to see here, but if you're passing, take a peek.

The Terrace at The Leela, Kovalam has to be one of the best places for buffet in Trivandrum. The Hotel is located on a cliff overlooking the ocean. Ask for a table near the window for an interrupted view. Food is great. A must visit if you are in Trivandrum.

Went with high expectations for dinner at the Terrace in Leela Kovalam for our anniversary . Unfortunately it was a disappointing experience . The minestrone soup we ordered was slightly cold and very tangy to the point of being unpalatable. The chicken again based on recommendation was overcooked to the point where we were finding it difficult to cut through, mushroom risotto too cheesy. The reason for two stars are the mocktail which was refreshing and the courteousness of the staff who was kind enough to get another batch of soup . We skipped ordering the mains and left the hotel disappointed. Unlikely to recommend to friends or family again . Please improve and add on to the ala carte menu and quality for a hotel in a five star restaurant. Regards

Kamal Saroha — Google review
The location and ambiance were undeniably fantastic, and there's no doubt about that. I regret to say that the restaurant team let down the show. The restaurant staff appeared disengaged and lacked enthusiasm. Smiles were scarce, and there was minimal interaction with guests. For an establishment that offers premium services, I expected a higher level of attentiveness and engagement. Unfortunately, this was not the case during my visit. Additionally, I noticed some areas that need improvement. The tables were not as clean as I would have expected, with visible marks. The silverware on the table also bore water stains, and the coffee cups were far from spotless. I did bring these concerns to the staff's attention, but instead of a prompt resolution and an apology, I encountered excuses. Considering the elevated prices associated with a restaurant of this caliber, I believe it's essential to deliver a flawless service. The current lack of interest from the restaurant staff is tarnishing the overall experience. I urge the management to consider investing in training that rejuvenates the staff's enthusiasm and encourages more interaction with guests. Furthermore, cleanliness should be a top priority. Restaurant glasses and guest restrooms must be immaculate, as they directly contribute to the patrons' impression of the establishment. I also found that the SKI bar area fell short in conveying a sense of luxury and sophistication. While the food quality was commendable, I find it difficult to justify the premium cost given the shortcomings in the restaurant service. I believe there's ample room for improvement, particularly in ensuring that the service matches the premium pricing.

I had visited the restaurant for a family get together. The expectations were really high for a restaurant in a 5 star hotel like Leela palace. Unfortunately my experience was absolutely horrible. First and foremost, I don’t think the staff has any coordination between them. My table was not attended multiple times and had to wait and go after staff to even get some water. Now that is fine for a normal restaurant. But experiencing something like this in a 5 star restaurant is not acceptable at all. The other factor is kid friendliness. While doing reservations we were told that feeding the baby wouldn’t be a problem and they would arrange for it. Once we got there, the whole episode was very confusing and frustrating. When we asked the staff, they told the only place is a play area and when we went there it was crowded and noisy with no place to feed the baby. Then the staff said us that the only other private place is the restroom. I was stunned by this response. How on earth can someone tell you to feed the baby in a restroom. That too in such a prestigious hotel. Finally some staff proved out to be useful and they provided a meeting room for feeding the baby. The only good thing was they provided a cradle near the table for the baby. I believe that all of this could have been neatly managed if all the staff had an informed plan and coordination for all the those requests that the guest would make. Next is the food. The food was as disappointing as the service. First of all I had to wait multiple times on dishes for the refill to arrive. The refills are again not sufficient for fast moving dishes. The refills tasted different from the previous fills. The spread was very thin. Most curries were very watery. The taste of the dishes were really mediocre and not anywhere near for the standards of a fine dining restaurant. The ambience is ok and has some traditional looks. The sea should be visible from outside the restaurant hall, but since it was night couldn’t get any view.

Food was the biggest disappointment only satisfaction was the dessert section . There was not much options available. Definitely needs a big improvement we are regular customers of The spectra in The leela palace chennai and we were very much satisfied and expected the same but great disappointment😞

Seafood restaurant
Curry Leaf Restaurant is a seafood restaurant that has excellent food and perfect location. The atmosphere is relaxed and the service is superb. The food is local and authentic, with fresh king prawns being a particular highlight. The sunset view from the restaurant's balcony is perfect for relaxing and chilling out.
Enjoy sunset, with 🍺 & sea food. Close to Leela & interesting trek to the resto. At the entrance you will have peaceful feel like yoga space & at the balcony flirt with sun. Enjoy the wind & waves. Perfect spot to chill out. Go for lunch & chill till sunset. Stress free go. Calm & quite. I had a great time. Chilling @ Kovalam, one & only Curry Leaf

Excellent seafood served here, with a pleasant and chilled out view. Tried prawns, snappers, chilli chicken, kerala porotta. Everything was well made.

Excellent restaurant, staff are great and the views are lovely (always a nice breeze too) we had tiger prawns which were amazing and there is a good selection of dishes to try, ice cold beers too. It’s a little more expensive than most restaurants but still cheap by Uk standards. Great place.

Shady place .. difficult to find and it took almost 2 hours for preparing food .. five star for location and 2 star for food

Located in the breathtaking setting of Kovalam Beach, The Curry Leaf is more than just a dining experience; it's a sensory journey. With its panoramic view of the ocean, this restaurant offers a serene ambiance that enhances every meal. What truly sets The Curry Leaf apart is its owner, whose genuine humility and kindness radiate throughout the establishment. From the moment you step in, you're greeted with warmth and hospitality, making you feel right at home. As for the cuisine, the Chicken Biryani and the Squid are absolute must-tries. The flavors are rich and authentic, leaving your taste buds longing for more. The chicken in the biryani is remarkably tender and juicy, showcasing the culinary expertise of the chefs. Whether you're a local or a traveler seeking an unforgettable dining experience, The Curry Leaf promises a delightful combination of delicious food and stunning scenery, making it a gem along the shores of Kovalam Beach.

Amazing food and amazing location! Highly recommended: 10 out of 10! The atmosfere was very relaxed. Great service: the restaurant can arrange a tuck tuck to pick you up, and super fresh food: very local and authentic cuisine at its best. We had king prawn molee curry, we choose the fresh king prawns, they were super fresh just caught by the fisherman, super juicy. And a White snapper in banana leaves: so good!

Some things are not what they seem to be. In the little Kovalam city many fancy restaurants can be found, food is expensive and really mediocre. Looking good but no quality. Now little bit outside of the man beach, if you climb a little hill, there is a hidden gem. This restaurant looks like a clean local simple Indian restaurant, but there are some surprises. There is a nice chill corner where you can chill-out, or like we, sing some Vedic Chants with a Shruti Box,. They loved it. Than the food: totally optimal, in flavours and spiciness. Best balance ever. Moderate prices. In short: a must go!

We discovered this gem during our recent trip to Kovalam. The cafe is located on a cliff overlooking the beach, and provided excellent view of the ocean and the cliff. We ordered fish from their fresh catch, which was grilled to perfection, and served with a side of salad and fries. We also had scoops of vanilla ice cream which tasted refreshing. The drawbacks are its location in a less accessible place with no adjoining parking space. The road leading to the cafe is across the beach, and up the cliff, which is atleast 200 meters from the parking space. For kids and elderly, it may not be easy. The hotel is farther from the main kovalam beach, and not accessible, unless you are staying in one of the resorts nearby. It's better to visit the place in groups, so that the food can be shared.

Took seafood platter it was fresh and delicious. Service was really good. If you travel by public transport then round way taxi is recommended from trivandrum.

Absolutely amazing place to eat! We are staying at The Leela hotel nearby to this place and come here to eat every afternoon. Very authentic and tasty food, everything is always prepared perfectly in the traditional way, serving all the local dishes! The owner/manager Salim is brilliant, offers an amazing service, he couldn't do any more for us, always wants us to have a nice time and sets everything up for us! The views and sunset from this restaurant make it a special place to eat. We came all the way from the UK to this restaurant and I highly reccomend to any tourists and visitors to this area

We were looking for a local restaurant with fresh & good fish. Curry leafs is a great one if you look for charm, friendly yet quick and polite service. Fish fry and prawns really tasty as well as the other choices. Good quality/price! Dharma and the rest of the team have been attentive, but also very respectful, giving us space while ensuring we did not miss anything. Thanks!

Above average price (1400rupees for a big fish enough for two people) but the grilled red snapper fish tasted really great. Cash only accepted. At this price range of the fish I hope they will accept card payment soon.

Great little restaurant right off the beach, you'll hear the waves break softly while you eat! The staff is very friendly and the service is impeccable, we didn't have to wait long to get our starters, a great veg hot and sour soup. The main dishes (kingfisher made in two different ways, fish fry and garlic butter )were recommended by our host and were both very tasteful, fresh and the portions were great, my partner couldn't finish her dish! Great experience, would definitely recommend if you are in the area.

It was raining and we went for a late lunch/early dinner. Staff was very friendly and accommodating and we were surprised that they offered gin and tonics in this mostly dry state. Delicious seafood platter for two, including two lobsters, tiger prawn, calamari, fish, and shrimp, all for about 80 dollars US. Sali kindly let us out and back to our hotel along a better route than we had taken. Highly recommend.

One of the boys found me on the beach during the day. At first, I was skeptical that this might be a Gee-up. But then I read the reviews. The food was delicious. I had the fish in a Kerala traditional curry (fish Malabar). Was delicious. The waves can be heard and the wind felt. November rain playing in the background Price is a bargain. If you’re in the neighbourhood definitely worth it.

Sali was an amazing host, very friendly and welcoming. I felt very looked after. The restaurant has a perfect view of the ocean which is absolutely stunning. The food was delicious and I had the tikka masala and kingfish which was made from fresh ingredients. The prices are very good especially for the quality of the food. When I next come from the UK I will definitely be returning, and recommend others to visit.

The German bakery has a lovely, homey feel with great food and an amazing view of the beach. Pricing is reasonable and the service is excellent.
I believe the view is the highlight incredible overview of the beach. We have the salad there. It was good

Nice ambience. Good food. Great view. Having breakfast hearing the waves and watching the ocean... Pure bliss! We ordered an American Breakfast and an English Breakfast. It was good.

The vibe and the view of sunset from the table is worth going there with some candles blowing on your table. We stopped for snacks break after visiting the beach. We had chai and pancakes with sunset view. The food was okay and service was bit slow. The crowd was good unlike the beach crowd. Overall good option to explore during sunset in the Kovalam beach area.

Beautiful rooms, feels like home. Zero plastics, not your normal hotel. It has ample space, a small sit out, a big bathroom, outside shower, and even an outside wooden hanger for your wet clothes. Everything is well organized.

We had coffee and cakes from here. Both of them are great in taste and worth trying. Price is almost reasonable. Ambience is the winner, facing beach and relaxing while eating hits different 🙌🏼

Their service is great! We ate here to have a small break from the gravy based foods, and we were happy to return. I could order a lobster for the following day, and they presented me a choice for it, fresh that day. Their pomegranate juice is amazing! Did I mention the staff was nice? Edit: their view of the sea from the first floor is also nice

The restaurant has a great view of the kovalam beach. The sun was a bit harsh while dining in the evening, but then the sunset view was really wonderful. The seating of the tables improved our view. The food seemed good and tasted nice, but the delay and price was a bit too much. The people working there seemed really friendly and helpful.

Definitely the best eatery / hangout spot in Kovalam beach area. The vast open terrace is bang on the beach with a view to die for. The menu is quite extensive with a lot of continental options which seems to be a rarity in this area. We ordered a portion of Fries, a Bruschetta and a Crotini. The fries were fresh and hot. Bruschetta was fresh but the Crotini was the best. We also had slices of Chocolate and Lemon cake which both were fresh and with just the right amount of sweet. I highly recommend this place and would definitely be coming back for a proper meal.

Located above the beach hotel on the first floor, the German Bakery and Wave restaurant provides an extensive menu. You can choose authentic German cuisine, seafood, drinks, tea, and desserts. The food is served fresh, although it takes a long wait. The sandwiches and grilled fish are a must-try. The view overlooking the Kovalam Light House and the sea is spectacular. Enjoy the candle light dinner with the sound of waves.

The restaurant is excellent, with friendly staff and a delightful location overlooking the ocean. The cocktails and fish dishes are of high quality. It is an attractive establishment that attracts a steady flow of customers due to its pleasant atmosphere by the seaside.
Best espresso in town by far! Most of the good I’ve had here was excellent: Buddha Bowl, peas on toast, Fusion breakfast, Beet Gazpacho, etc. very nice spicing and clean feeling. Tofu potato stir fry was disappointing not much tofu and oily. Very pleasant environment and service. Great wifi.

Fusion is one of the luckiest restaurant on a beach; impressive sea view, great vegetarian and Ayuravedic foods options; accommodative stuff. Special thank you to Ajith; I was coming back to beach very late, and he was very helpful getting me food even after hours.

Decent service and decent food. Nothing was bad and nothing was worth mentioning at the same time. We had the regular kerala fish curry with rice. The quantity of curry was good for two people, but we had to buy additional plate of rice. I found the curry to be decent, but my husband didn't like it that much. Overall you can go probably go once. They accept only cash.

We were a group of 13 ladies staying at this hotel for to weeks. Doing yoga on the roof terrace every morning. The staff were very friendly, helpful, service oriented and always had a smile on their face😊 We had a great waiter: Àjiťh Kàbådďi, he was there for us from breakfast to dinner. The rooms were clean and comfortable, with the best view to the beach. I really enjoyed staying there.

Food was not good, we took pizza, french fries & fresh lime sweet salt soda, Pizza was horrible absolutely tasteless French fries was plan & blunt Fresh lime was over dozed with lime had no salt or sweet Best worst part was water bottle which MRP is 20 & billed for 70, when asked how can you charge more than MRP, the hotel manager answers "it's legal for us to charge more than MRP as we are 4 star hotel" It's a over priced restaurant with below AVG food

One of the loveliest restaurants on Kovalam Beach. The view is splendid especially for Sunset. The Budda bowl is absolutely delicious. The staff is very welcoming and pleasant. The prices are reasonable, and the restaurant offers traditional, fusion, and some western dishes as well. It’s my favourite restaurant on the beachfront.
Stephan Cohen — Google review
The dosa was disappointingly bland, the upma lacked any flavor whatsoever, and the coffee tasted like sweetened milk with no hint of coffee flavor. The service was painfully slow, making the whole dining experience frustrating. The only saving grace was the view, but unfortunately, that couldn't make up for the lackluster food and service.

Didn’t eat but enquired re using pool, told in person 10,000 per person!!! Thought must be a scam and so messaged them the same question after 2 days no reply and my hotel overlooks the pool with no one in it day after day. Found other very nice pool to Use for 200 per person. My experience of this establishment 🤷‍♂️ .

I didnt eat at the restaurant here but please don't miss out on the small gelato shop round the side. Excellent home made icecream. And there is also a fabulous coconut one for anyone who is lactose intolerant. Came here each day!
