National Museum - Butuan, Eastern-Northern Mindanao Regional Museum

Specialty Museums
The Eastern-Northern Mindanao Regional Museum in Butuan is a charming and compact institution dedicated to exhibiting archaeological discoveries and cultural artifacts from the surrounding area. Despite its warm and accommodating staff, visitor numbers remain disappointingly low. The museum offers an opportunity to explore the rich history of this region, yet it appears to be overlooked by many potential visitors.
A small but beautiful museum in Butuan. Very friendly and helpful stuff. Unfortunately, not many people seem to be interested to visit this museum. Always when I am there, my family and I are the only guests.

I loves how the place was so clean and tidy. The glass barriers were so clean and clear it's like you're not looking through the glass. However, the lady guard wasn't very friendly and looked like she would eat me alive if I do something wrong, but I understand that she's just doing her job in a strict manner. And also, there's not much places to go inside the museum. Overall it's 4 stars for me. Not the best place I've been to but definitely not the worst.

It has some artifacts which can somehow describe the history of the place. But I just feel there's a need to add up some artifacts and or documentations that could really show Historical Events in Butuan City.

We were accompanied by a very knowledgeable and warm museum guide who happily explained and provided context to the museum exhibits. The warmth of the employees made the whole visit enjoyable and we probably wouldn't have as good a time if we just walked around without a guide. We offered to give a tip or a donation but we were declined and were just asked to provide feedback. The location is convenient and has nice places for photos.

Very informative. The guide was very knowledgeable about the items inside the museum. Worth it talaga

The museum layout is pretty simple and orderly. I liked that it's a single story building and it's outdoor landscape was a great place to hang out or have snacks, get to know some of the other folks on the photowalk with us like we did. The interior has a similar feel to Cebu's national museum; Sugbo Meseo. And a bit of the National Museum of Fine Arts. Galleries are also distinguished by plain colored walls to compliment the artifacts or art pieces. I liked the introduction done by the museum host when we visited; of it's importance to the city, the province and the whole of Mindanao. When we were there, there was also an exhibit of colorful paintings on tapestries by Bert Monterona which advocate protecting the environment, anti-war and culture of peace campaign.

Free and educational venue to revisit historic Butuan, home of the balangays and the first mass of the Philippines!

It was spacious where students even use it as their practice place. I also see a lot of people enjoying them selves and just chilling under the shades.

Great place to visit, a little on the small side for a museum, but they have some very interesting native artifacts.
Jamone Thomas — Google review
The curator is knowledgeable and did very well in explaining the history of Butuan during the Pre Hispanic Colonization. The museum also displays Burial coffin jars, potteries, jewelries and the main feature is the balanghay boat remains. The museum is very informative and I recommend it as one of the places to visit when you're in the Butuan and Caraga Region. The museum is neat, well organized, and the restroom areas are well maintained. Outside the museum has a pond and garden where you can hear the birds chirping and see beautiful flowers blooming. Surely it's a worthy place to visit.

Certainly! Here's a review: "The museum in Butuan offers a captivating journey through the region's rich history and culture. From ancient artifacts to interactive exhibits, visitors are immersed in Butuan's fascinating past. The well-curated displays and knowledgeable staff make it a must-visit destination for anyone interested in local heritage. Don't miss the opportunity to explore this treasure trove of Butuan's history."

The museum was closed when we got there due to an electricity problem but the park was open. Maybe next time. 🥺

Although the museum was closed due to an on going renovation, but we enjoyed the beauty of nature in the area. Some students were there studying. Nice place to contemplate and rest

Suggestive and characteristic place where you can see beautiful sunsets over the ocean
roberto b. — Google review
Although the area was reasonably clean, the statues were in disarray. One of the statue's arms has broken off, and the others are just neglected. Sad. Besides that, the area offers good swimming, sheltered eating for family events, and even low-budget accommodation—street food vendors plenty. The air is filled with BBQ smells, making one hungry for the excellent food the vendors offer. If you're coming for a visit, then the historical site is the least attractive. Locals visit to swim and have good food. We came on a Sunday, which was pretty busy—plenty of kids in the calm waters. Just watch out for solid offshore currents during high tide.

The story of the great explorer Magallanes deserves better than this ugly, unkempt monument on a dirty beach.
Guido Vo — Google review
A site claimed Magellan landed in the Philippines. Also reliable search for a beach, a lot of cottages there. You can also buy foods if you don't have "Baon" like grilled meat, fish, camote and etc.
Belle Sumz — Google review
One of the several disputed landing sites of Magellan, this is a nice black sand family beach with cottages and karaoke populated by locals. A festive place for a weekend hangout. The monument itself is broken and sad, so don't go for that. Beach is 4 stars. Monument and any historical significance, 2 stars.
Balay Amarilyo — Google review
What happened to this tourist spot? The place is supposedly monumental but the surrounding area looks unkempt. There is a toilet nearby, however it is unclean. I just wish that the local department of tourism of Butuan as well as the local townsfolk take pride of this place as this is part of the country’s rich history by doing the necessary cleaning and maintenance.
Issa Torres — Google review
It's a public place where everyone can enjoy the beach. They have cottages, food, drinks, karaoke and a lot more. All you need to so is to bring clothes, money and yourself. One thing I would like to request, please implement a strict policy to do "Leave No Trace". I can see a little trash but I know it can be worked out. ^_^
Mysterious X — Google review
Fun beach community just 20 minutes from Butuan. Love the atmosphere here. Just needs a little cleaning up occasionally and it would be perfect for quick getaways from town.
Jeff Sharpton — Google review
For an important historical space, this place is in utter sorry state. It is neglected and has not been given the dignity it deserves. It can make you cry. But I cant expect that of the Philippine government at this point in time.If the local government does not push for care and dignity of historical spaces... vis a vis priority given to business centered profit Malls in the city. The children of the next generation will not have pride in their country's pride.

The best place for weekend "getaways". Can truly relieve stress with their relaxing ambience. Not only for adults but you can definitely tag the kiddos and surely they will love their child friendly ammenities! Their landscape and architectural designs are truly a masterpiece in sight. So beat the heat and boredom and head to this wonderful place. 😉

A good place in Butuan for weekend family outings. The kids will surely enjoy the kiddie pool. The waters in the kiddle pool are not sparkly clean but is not that dirty as well when we visited. We did not have the chance to try their adult pool but the slides there were not really giving when we watched others try it. The toilets and changing rooms need improvement as well. Dont bother bringing hard liquors, they have very expensive corkage fees for that. Buy beers from inside instead. The cottages are free of chage. Tha place is actually breezy and shady. Will come back again in the future. We came on a normal weekend and the mumber of people were tolerable. It is recommended to book beforehand if on rush weekends/holidays, the place will sureply be packed.
Barbie Ross Villaplaza — Google review
We were there yesterday. The ambience is pretty (it has a lot of trees) which we prefer of a theme park. Life guards are available in all 3 pools, which is a plus. However, the management should consider creating a cleaner and more accessible bathrooms and shower areas. The ones there are not well-maintained. The surrounding corners should also be cleaned thoroughly as there were a lot flies around. The water in the pool needs constant cleaning, especially that there are a lot of kids loving to play in the water. The place really has a very good potential if well-maintained.
Ana Vess — Google review
Pricing is not bad considering you can stay as long as you like. Its a water park with 3 main areas for children and adults in the back. many main event tents for picnic and special events as well as a small gift shop. None of the slides were operational and the water is very dirty. Maintenance is the main issue here it would seem. However, the kids still had plenty of fun running around and swimming in the smaller kiddie pool that had a little slide and dumping water. Worth a visit to cool down. Thanks for reading and if this review helps give a thumbs up.

Before saying something, please don't mind the 6 photos with dark blue sky, because that's in Ultra Winds, and because IDK how to delete it. Thank you. I give this a 4 star because it has a lack of shower rooms because they're still renovating the place. But it's still so nice and the view melts your heart and eyes. It has new pools. It has a pool for kids, teens and of course adults....I prefer going here in vacation, I swear you're gonna crave to swim, lol just kidding. Visit there and Swim your heart Out...

It's not easy to say something about this park. Yes, it's a beautiful swimming pool. There are many places where you can sit and eat your food. It's clean but the fee is with 160 Peso per person (children and addults) quite expensive. But when I was there, I made some bad experiences. So it was not allowed to my 10 years old son (who is a good swimmer) to use the big slides and the big pool. When I wanted to slide with my son in the middle slide, it was not allowed to ME. But the slides were the main reason to visit Sprinkles! Then the middle pool was closed cause 2 kids made there their swim exercises. So my son only could use the little pool who is actually for little children. And on another day some months later, I made the experience that the whole time the guards are making trouble to guests for very small reasons. It was not allowed to jump, to have fun, to use the slide... Hey guys, guards are there to save people, not to make terror! So I cannot give more than 2 stars.

As an American visiting from california. Sprinkles water park and even center didn’t fail to put a smile on my face. I visited the site in 2013 and now 2023. Don’t expect it to be as clean as it was before in terms of tiles and flooring, you can see some cracked tiles and floors but, who cares? For the entrance fee where can you find a resort as nice as this? Keep in mind, Philippines heat and humidity ruin a lot of buildings and paint. It’s not cheap to replace. However, sprinkles after 10 years still holds up and my kids enjoy it!

I spent 2 days at this hotel. The shower filled with water and would take all night to go out.. The food was ok. The rooms was good. I was charged 75pesos per day to use a face cloth. I have never ever experienced that before. For the price, I'm expexting more.

If you're coming to Butuan, this is the place you want to stay! Excellent service, and cleanliness! The only downside is the parking. I don't recommend driving here looking to park. You will have a hard time. They have an attached restaurant (Lime Zest) that serves good food. And there is the Fulcrum bar/cafe upstairs in the plaza that is good too! Easy access to surroundings makes this place outstanding! I will surely stay here on any future visits to Butuan.

I think their selling point is the pool. Stayed here before driving home to Cantilan. Maybe some other rooms are okay but ours was too small. Staff are nice. To connect to WiFi is a struggle. Maintenance has to come to the room and do something on your mobile phone but ended the same- No connection. Our rooms has pool view which was not exciting. It was foggy in the lobby and breakfast area.
MyraBelle Ignalig — Google review
Well first they chose to paint the hallways while people are staying there and the smell of paint/kerosene never went away. Only bath towels no hand towels or washcloths. No slippers, they require a 2000 pesos deposit for what I have no idea. The Wi-Fi requires strange code coupons. The tv reception was the worst I have experienced. The breakfast was average and although the staff was somewhat helpful they really aren’t friendly. After reading the other reviews I have to think they are manufactured because this hotel is not good at all.
Dan Myers — Google review
Centrally located, so you don't have to travel far to get to any of the malls. Staff was outstanding! They're constantly cleaning and very friendly. The rooms are quite modern and have pretty much all you need. I stayed in the double bed room. They have suites that look incredible on the poolside. $$$ The only criticism I have is that the hot water was difficult to control in room 113, and parking on-site could be very difficult because of the lack of available spaces.

We attended a FINANCIAL ADVISORY Orientation of SUNLIFE @Watergate Butuan City. The space of the area was so big that they can occupy so many attendees. They have enough airconditioner for the guest. Overall, I like this place 😊 Recommended for Seminars & Orientations having a huge number of occupancy 😊🥰

From the moment we walked into the hotel we were warmly greeted with smiles and a can do attitude from all the staff. The hotel room was excellent with a nice view over the swimming pool. The pool was nice and relaxing as well as refreshing. The restaurant was amazing with the selection of foods and drinks as well as the quality of food and the staff were amazing and accommodating. Every area of the hotel including all the staff we had met I would definitely recommend staying here again. We shall return or should I say we shall definitely return.

My favorite hotel in Butuan City and one of the best place to dine in from their buffet breakfast until dinner. Well maintained and clean swimming pool. Great customer service. However, they have limited parking spaces.

Beautiful hotel with great service. There was a beautiful poolside area, but unfortunately the pool was drained for re-tileing. Nice clean sheats. My only demerit is the hot water was a bit iffy.

Perfect for a couple of days stay at the heart of Butuan City. The place is very cozy, they serve great food for breakfast and the room is very neat and clean. Plus you can easily find a ride outside the hotel everything is very accessible.

A really good hotel. The quality of the beds are high. It's clean and you have a nice bathroom!
John Möller — Google review
Love the interior design of the rooms. Staff are friendly and super accommodating. Food at the breakfast buffet is good. Gets a bit crowded during breakfast time esp when the hotel have a lot of guests. Parking though was a bit hard when there are several guests who brought their cars too. Kudos to the SG during the evening shift who was super nice to me and made sure that I get to park easily when I got off work (I stayed 3 nights), would have wanted to extend my stay but they were fully booked already. Overall, my stay here was really good.

Very informative staff and display.Mario the guide is a gem😊 Boat number 1 of the 11 boats excavated are here. The shrine displays the Filipino's skill in engineering, carpentry and design way long before Western colonizers came to ravage our country.

In HEKASI, that's a few years back, we were taught that the Filipino word "Barangay" is derived from the "balangay" or "balanghai." Do you know what these words are? Its an ancient watercraft used by the natives of the Philippines for transportation and for trade. These are large boats built with wooden planks and pegs. The "balangays" have been declared as National Cultural Treasure by President Corazon C. Aquino.
