Guruvayur

Guruvayur is a pilgrimage town in the southwest Indian state of Kerala. It’s known for centuries-old, red-roofed Guruvayur Temple, where Hindu devotees make offerings of fruit, spices or coins, often equivalent to their own weight. Nearby, Mammiyur Mahadeva Temple contains shrines to the deities Vishnu and Shiva. South of town, St. Thomas Church is believed to have been established by the apostle St. Thomas in 52 AD.

Beautiful place and is nearby to Guruvayoor temple. Similar to Guruvayoor temple, we have to wear dhoti and no shirts are allowed. Doesn't require much time to visit as it's quite small and not very crowded most of the time. If visiting Guruvayoor temple, you can take out some time to visit this place as it's very peaceful and worth the visit.

Shiva is the main Deity here in the form of a two feet tall linga. When he is decorated with gold cladding, tiers of bright cresents, He presents a beautiful serene look. Next to Him, we have an equally beautiful MahaVishnu shrine. The butter cladding done on him presents an awesome look of the Lord. Reminding us of Guruvayoorappan himself. When we go around the outer parikrama, there is a Bhagavatha temple on the northwest corner. She looks so beautiful in her gold cladding that one stays rooted looking at her awesome face. Legend has that Sri Mahadeva offered the place where presently Sri Guruvayoorappan is installed and moved over here when Vayu and Guru bhagawan brought Sri Krishna's idol from Dwaraka. A must visit temple.

Near Guruvayoor are two wonderful temples Parthasarathy Temple, the Garba Griha is on a chariot structure. Then there is Sri Chamundeshwari Temple. Both these temples are very close to Guruvayoor Temple.

Originally called as MAHIMA-YOOR Temple (The City of Mahima/Greatness). . An amazing temple of Mahadev with comparatively lesser crowd than Guruvayur. . This is the place where Mahadev shifted along with Parvati Mata, after the Guruvayur (original place of Mahadev/Parvati) was given for keeping VISHNU's Idol (this idol Krishna & Family worshipped in Dwarka but after Dwarka destroyed it was brought in Guruvayur). . Due to this, it is said that, visit of Guruvayur is incomplete without the darshan of Mammiyoor Temple.

It's a temple dedicated to Lord Shiva, located at Mamiyur, which is 1 KM from Guruvayur. Lord Shiva has given the land or space for the Lord Krishna when Devathas Vayu and Prahaspathi approached him to install Lord Krishna. Uthava has obtained Lord Krishna's Vigraha when Dwaraka is submerged, Uthava handed over to Devathas Vayu and Prahaspathi. It's a must visit temple, and it has a parking facility on the sides. Temple has Sub Shrines dedicated to Lord Ganesha, Lord Krishna, Lord Murugan, and Sastha. It also has a Sarpa kavu and temple for Bagavati (if I am right). Those who visit Guruvayur must visit this temple is mythology. However, you have one place at Guruvayur temple, where you can stand and worship Lord Shiva as an alternate. Well maintained temple.

Punnathur Kotta is an elephant sanctuary located in the 10-acre land of Guruvayoor devaswom, known for housing around 60 elephants. This training and grooming center dedicated to elephants is situated in Thrissur, about 22 km from the city center. The sprawling 11.5 acres of green foliage surrounding this park make it a prime attraction for visitors who want to watch these majestic animals being bathed and fed.
It was a wonderful visit. There was countless elephants there. Keep a safe distance from elephants while taking photographs. There are guards we cannot fed them. The ticket charge for adults is ₹30 and ₹20 for children. There is a small store you can have tea snacks and ice cream. Good to go with children with your own risk.

It's a great place to roam around and to check out the habitants of elephant. The entry is charged at Rs 20 for an adult and even for using the mobile phone camera one has to pay a fee of Rs.25. Got ample parking space. But it felt pretty strange when I saw those beautiful mammals being tied up and kind of enslaved. They also deserve to live in this world peacefully. Some of those animals looked very sick as well.

This is one beautiful place with all these elephants around so close. You'd be amazed to see how dominating man could get looking at these mighty animals chained up. I do not understand how to describe the feeling. First time in life, so many elephants in 45 minutes however this wasn't what I had imagined. I thought they'd be left open with a barricade. Nope! They are chained. You need to go by yourself or educate the others that the elephants need not be disturbed.. It's worth the visit I sure would recommend only if it's not stressing the elephants. It is so sad to see them chained up to all four legs I wish it was different. There are people maintaining it. I saw them feed and give water to the elephants. I did not try to speak to any of the attendants as I was busy watching the elephants. From thrissur if you take a cab 7 seater it should cost you rs 2000 return to the station. 100 by local bus up and down. There are camera charges too, be nice and pay for your camera. If it supports the animal please pay for your tickets.

One of the most enjoyable experiences in and around Guruvayoor is visiting the elephants. During our visit, we were delighted to find more than 30 well-maintained elephants, each taken care of with great attention. A fun fact about these elephants is that they perform tricks and display their happiness when interacting with people. It truly adds to the joy of the experience. In general, this visit offers a delightful and entertaining time. The place is kept clean, making it suitable for families with children. You can easily obtain an entry pass at the counter, with a fee of Rs 20 for adults. Additionally, there is ample car parking available, ensuring convenience for visitors. Although there are no food options on-site, you are welcome to bring your own food without any issues.

I was here to see Elephants. There used to be 67+ elephants and now it has reduced to 40+. There's a paid parking lot and there's an entrance fee, for adults it's Rs. 20/- and kids it's Rs. 15. You can walk around as every elephant is placed separately, next to each other and it's spread across the property. It seems like the kingdom of Kozhikode Samudri King. It was open earlier for the public to visit inside the palace but it seems COVID changed that, and now there's no entry. However, it was good to go around and see the Elephants and their mischiefs. It's good to go on a weekday as there's not much rush.

This is a very nice place to visit with kids, you can see lots of elephants in one place. This place can improve a lot by providing a small recreation spot and play area for kids. Showcase there lifestyle create videos and documentaries to showcase in Facility. This will give a unique experience to visitors

A well maintained place dedicated to elephants only. It includes food, shelter, medical facilities, training of elephants. It is said that around 54 elephants are present in this facility and are taken to the Guruvayur temple during puja only No one is allowed to ride and touch these elephants and provide food. If you want to feed them then you have to buy fruits and vegetables from the center at this location only. I had the privilege of visiting this elephant enclosure in Kerala, and it was an awe-inspiring experience. From the moment I entered, I could sense the deep respect and care the staff had for these majestic creatures. The enclosure was spacious and well-maintained, providing a natural and comfortable environment for the elephants. What truly made this visit exceptional was the opportunity to learn about the elephants’ history, daily routines, and conservation efforts. The knowledgeable guides shared fascinating insights into the lives of these magnificent animals, which deepened my appreciation for their role in Kerala’s culture and heritage. I was also fortunate to witness a feeding session, where I observed the elephants up close. It was a heartwarming experience to see them enjoy their meals, and it left me with a sense of wonder and respect for these gentle giants. The highlight of the visit was definitely the chance to interact with the elephants. I had the opportunity to feed them, and it was a surreal and unforgettable moment. The staff ensured that the interaction was safe for both visitors and elephants, prioritizing the animals’ well-being. Overall, my visit to the elephant enclosure in Kerala was not only a memorable experience but also an educational one. It left me with a profound appreciation for these magnificent creatures and the dedicated efforts of those working to protect them. I highly recommend this experience to anyone visiting Kerala.

The place was clean and reasonably well kept. There were many elephants standing at various places eating or just simply standing. After the first few elephants we realized that all elephants were chained in 2 legs and some had chains on 3 legs. This is seriously inhumane. These are gentle giants that normally walk 20-30km a day in the forests being forced to stand in the same spot for hours. Few of them had severe chaffing on their legs having been chained tight with very little slack for movement. We can totally understand the frustration such treatment can cause, forcing them to act up occasionally. Our expectation that these animals would be treated better for they carry the gods on their backs was completely squashed. We returned sad and with an uneasy feeling in our stomach.

One of the first Churches in India established by Apostle St. Thomas. Church has maintained its history. I have been to this Church many times and you feel that history when you see the church and the altar. According to Saint Thomas Christian tradition, Thomas traveled from Muziris (Kodungallur) and landed at Palayur by boat through the backwaters. At that time, Palayur was a stronghold of the Brahmins and also of Jews. He came to visit the Jewish merchants at Palayur at Judankunnu (meaning the hill of Jews) and to preach the Christian gospel. The place has since become a dry land but its historicity as a boat jetty called locally 'Bottukulam' has been preserved as a monument to St. Thomas (see picture).[11][12][13] Of the seven churches traditionally said to have been established by Thomas, only three–Palayur in the Syro-Malabar Catholic Archeparchy of Thrissur, Kottakkavu in the Syro-Malabar Catholic Major Archeparchy of Ernakulam-Angamaly, and Niranam in the Malankara Orthodox Diocese of Niranam–claim continuity, while the remaining four churches have undergone several changes in their locations.[14] Palayur St.Thomas Monument Palayur Thaliyakkulam Historical legend records that when Thomas landed at Palayur, he witnessed the sight of Hindu Brahmins, after their ablutions in a local tank. They were offering prayers by chanting mantras (the Vedic tradition of India for spiritual transformation), hymns to god in the form of Argyam or Tharpanam (water held in the palms) to the Sun god, a practice also said to be followed in Harappan and Persian cultures. Amused by the sight of water being thrown up by the Brahmins, from the palms of their hands, which was falling back, he challenged the Brahmins stating that the water they were offering was not being accepted by the Sun god as it was falling back into the tank. He made a deal with them stating that his God would accept the offer of water if he threw it up in the same way as they did: the water would not fall back. If he proved this then his God was superior and the Brahmins would have to embrace Christianity. He performed this miracle (summoned the Holy Trinity, completed the sign of the Cross and threw water held in his palms up into the air, which remained still in the air at a height) and with this miracle he converted a number of Brahmins and Jews in Palayur to Christianity.[15] Thereafter he baptised the converts in a nearby water tank, now known as "Thaliyakulam" which is referred to as The First Baptism Pond, "The Birthplace of Christianity in India". The Brahmins who did not convert to the faith gave the epithet of the 'Shapa Kadu' or "Cursed Place" to Palayur and migrated to Vembanad to purify themselves.[16][14][17]

Churches often provide opportunities for members to connect with one another through fellowship events, small group gatherings, and community service projects. These interactions can foster a sense of belonging and support within the church community.Attending worship services is a central part of the church experience for many people. This can involve singing hymns, praying, listening to sermons, and participating in rituals or sacraments like communion or baptism.

Guruvayur Temple, located in the quaint town of Guruvayur in Kerala, India, is a place of profound spiritual significance that left an indelible mark on my heart. My visit to this temple was an enchanting experience that exceeded all expectations. The temple's mesmerizing architecture, adorned with intricate carvings and vibrant colors, exudes a sense of grandeur and spirituality. The atmosphere inside is filled with a positive vibe of devotion and reverence. The main highlight of the temple is its presiding deity, Lord Krishna, affectionately known as Guruvayurappan. The idol is believed to have a divine presence that radiates a unique energy, captivating the hearts of devotees. Witnessing the daily rituals and offerings to the deity was a humbling experience that deepened my spiritual connection. The temple complex also houses several smaller shrines dedicated to various gods and goddesses, each with its own distinct charm. The peaceful ambiance within these shrines invites visitors to reflect and find solace in their own personal moments of prayer. The administration and management of Guruvayur Temple deserve special mention. Despite being one of the most revered pilgrimage sites in South India, the temple staff ensured that the crowd was well-managed, and the sanctity of the place was preserved. The efficient queue system and helpful volunteers guided visitors through the temple premises smoothly.

On this particular Tuesday visit, the Guruvayoor Temple experienced fewer crowds, and the management efficiently handled the situation. While waiting in line for darshan, they thoughtfully provided drinking water to the devotees. Although I've visited the temple many times before, there was a gap after COVID, and I noticed a positive change: the demolition of the bridge inside the temple premises. This improvement allows visitors to navigate the temple without the hassle of maneuvering through crowds and steps. However, sometimes the waiting time in the queue can be prolonged, lasting an hour or more, which can be challenging for devotees.

Guruvayur is renowned as one of the largest temples in Kerala, attracting a substantial number of visitors on weekends, during festival seasons, and public holidays. You'll find numerous accommodation options in the nearby area. There are several shrines and temples dedicated to different deities, as well as a large pond. Heaven for all Krishna devotees..🙏 Really we get blessed by lord Krishna. Mostly crowded, preferable to visit at early morning or evening (can be able to avoid the crowd a little😊) . Enough facilities for devotees like Washrooms , restrooms ,Clock rooms, Hotels, Rooms etc are available. Recently opened Multi level Car parking facility by the devaswom board was really good.

Sree Chamundeswari Temple

Mentioned on
Hindu temple
Sree Chamundeswari Temple, situated on the Chamundi Hills, can be reached after climbing approximately 1,000 steps. The Hindu temple stands tall and boasts exquisite carvings that are meticulously crafted in rows.
Chamundeshwari Temple: Over a century old, the Chamundeshwari temple is one of the most spiritual Guruvayur tourist places. Hindu devotees consider the place a holy shrine to calm your senses and find some spiritual guidance. The temple is dedicated to Chamundeshwari Devi, one of the fiercest forms of Maa Durga. The temple complex is beautifully designed and the statue of the Devi is made of five metals - gold, lead, copper, iron and silver. Every year, thousands of tourists visit the place to get blessings of the Devi, as well as for meditation and achieving serenity and tranquility. The beautiful exteriors of the place are an added bonus. Location - Inner Ring Road, North Nada, Mammiyoor, Guruvayur Timings - 5 AM to 8 PM, every day Entry fees - no entry fees

Having visited Guruvayoor numerous times, I was pleasantly surprised to see the existence of a temple dedicated to Chamundeswari Devi not far from Mammiyoor Siva temple. It's located just about 1Km from the Outer Ring Road. If you're planning to visit this temple after praying at Mammiyoor temple, please do not use the route shown by Google Maps which takes you through E K Nayanar road unless you're on a two wheeler. The road gets very narrow and just about fits a car. Please go via an alternate route. There is no dedicated parking space within the temple premises, but you can park on the road: there's hardly any traffic along that road. The temple doesn't occupy much area: it's rather small. The sanctum sanctorum can be clearly viewed from the road. I felt great praying there especially since it has such a peaceful and quiet atmosphere. Thanks Maps for showing me this temple!

Not crowded and pleasant. As in any other Gurvayur temples - for men: shirt is not allowed and dhoti is mandated, for women: saree or other traditional dress are mandated. A bit lengthy walk from main temple, I would recommend hiring auto.

"My recent visit to Sree Chamundeswari Temple in Guruvayoor was an amazing spiritual experience. The temple's beautiful architecture and serene atmosphere immediately transported me to a place of reverence and awe. The temple's main deity, Goddess Chamundeswari, was beautifully adorned and presented, and the temple priests were welcoming and knowledgeable. They guided me through the rituals and traditions of the temple, which enhanced my overall spiritual experience. The temple's location is quite serene, and it is surrounded by lush greenery and a peaceful atmosphere, making it an ideal destination for anyone looking for a spiritual retreat. The cleanliness and organization of the temple were highly impressive, and the staff's dedication to maintaining the temple premises' hygiene is highly commendable. Overall, I highly recommend Sree Chamundeswari Temple to anyone seeking a spiritual and cultural experience in Guruvayoor. The temple's peaceful and serene atmosphere, combined with its stunning natural surroundings and beautiful architecture, make it a truly unique and fulfilling destination. I am grateful for the opportunity to visit this wonderful temple and will surely visit again."

we have had our meals after darshan and they have always been up to the mark in taste and good food, we cannot say anything about other food. they serve hot water and the delicacies for meals are good.

Poor Atmosphere. Always Crowdy. Near to Guruvayoor temple. Food is just okay. Good Coustomer Service. Not much clean.

Worst experience, average food. We sat at upstairs. Took more than 45mints to get food.

By seeing the name of this hotel, I decided to have lunch from there. Lunch was absolutely not worth the money paid. Sambar felt like water rather than curry. I got the seat at the entrance so the staff did not give any attention. Rasam and buttermilk were served almost at the end. Pulusseri wasn't even served at the table which was also available. The waiter came with an empty glass and nobody bothered about water. So I used it for buttermilk instead. A tiny cup of payasam was also served to me.The Staff needs better coordination. The veg biriyani which I took parcel was also below average in terms of taste and texture. Payment has to be made first before having food. Better to skip this hotel and go for other good hotels nearby. Cash and UPI payment accepted. Car parking is available nearby which was full most of the time.

Seems to a local hotel. Not keeping the taste of brand.tea is very poor. Much better hotels are available near.

Worst experience. Everybody including the person in the cash drawer was showing attitude. Initially they asked a group of us to go upstairs for the breakfast. The hotel people upstairs in AC informed there is nothing they can serve upstairs except puttu. Now why would anybody run AC for puttu. I think they were running AC for themselves. No dosa no Puri which was available downstairs. I told them that I'll volunteer to serve my group and asked them to just give 18 dosa but they simply denied. Now all of them including old age people had to climb down the stairs and we all gave our peace of mind and stormed out of this hotel and went to bear by Vasantha Bhavan. Very close is this Vasantha Bhavan hotel - though they also had difficult time serving they did not show attitude and served - took around 40 mins for 20 people to finish our breakfast is something ok.

Food was okay. It's not of Kerala style food but it's not much of so called Tamil Nadu style food Saravana Bhavan is famous for. Also staffs in the reception and waiters should have better communication skill atleast as they are in Guruvayur.

Very horrible food and worst ambience . Almost everybody in our family got food poisoned after having food here on 26th March This is not the original Saravana Bhavan of Chennai and these people are fooling people with substandard and unhygienic food. Not best as expected for the brand name. Hotel was full and not much neat. But A/ c room was well maintained which was neat. Food was average. Masala in masala dosa was a bit sweet, batura was good but chana was not at all tasty. Idli was average. Vada was superb but 1 costed Rs 20 ( may be as it was in ac room) which I felt was too costly. Puri and bhaji was really very tasty.
SARITHA UNNIKRISHNAN — Google review
Poor customer service. I asked for a bill after payment, and the cashier, a lady, shouted at me. Providing a bill after a transaction is a basic requirement; I can't understand what is wrong with it. Poor ambience & ventilation . Worst service and no response from owner or supervisor on food complaints they were casual and not bothered only focused on minting money
Sriram Narasimhan — Google review
Food is okay but always crowded. Gets very warm during summers. They have an AC section as well but was not open when we visited. Staff manages the crowd well though and ensures first come is allowed entry first. But once inside getting faster service depends on where you sit and how better you can get eye contact with a waiter. Prices are slightly above average for the ambience & service provided. The crowd will force you to have a quick meal. Municipal parking lot (paid) right in front of the restaurant but difficult to get an empty slot.

We visited here on 27th Jan 2024 afternoon. Very worst food. Rice not even boiled well. We informed the same to server & even in the billing counter. However, not even got proper response. Food is nice. Service is not too quick. Its not the preperation or the serving that takes time. Its the time taken to get the attention of staff to come to our table. I dont think there is a down time at this place. Always crowded. Very near the temple and a good place for a break. Do tey out their cutlet. This branch of ICH is pure Veg..

I recently dined at the Indian Coffee House near Guruvayoor Temple, and my experience was a mix of culinary satisfaction and service considerations. The masala dosa I ordered was delicious, featuring a flavorful blend of spices that added a delightful twist to the traditional dish. However, the service left room for improvement. The staff seemed a bit slow and inattentive, affecting the overall dining experience. Timely service is crucial, especially in a popular eatery where patrons may be on a tight schedule due to their temple visits. Despite the service lapse, the pleasant taste of the masala dosa and the cozy ambiance of the Indian Coffee House made the visit worthwhile. With a bit of attention to service efficiency, this eatery has the potential to offer an even more satisfying dining experience for visitors near Guruvayoor Temple.

This is regarding Indian coffee house located in fornt of Guruvayur temple east nada... I had a good experience before with other coffee house shops located in ekm, alley side.. but today after having the food from this hotel it gave a such a different experience.. Very poor quality of food served. tea coffee is watery. I didn't have the coffee and came out. Food that waiter was only interesting in serving masala dosa and ghree roast. The sambar/chutni watery. Very bad I felt after eating from there. No value for money for the food they serve.

I strongly advise against patronizing this establishment there are plenty of better options in the area.
