Madhav National Park

National park
Madhav National Park is a natural reserve that comprises of forest and grassland, providing a habitat for diverse wildlife such as deer, jackals, wild boar, and birds. The park is located near George Castle which was constructed in 1911 with several turrets offering an exquisite view of the Sakhya Sagar Lake at dusk. The forest seems to be still during sunset giving the impression that even animals rest and enjoy this moment.
Mystery and beautiful scenery are the two things that come to mind when someone says the word, castle, and these two are the things that define the George Castle. Constructed in 1911, the castle has several turrets. The best time to visit the castle is at dusk. The view of the Sakhya Sagar Lake from these turrets is just mesmerizing as the color of the water keeps changing till sunset. The forest seems to be at a standstill as if the animals also rest and enjoy the sun setting down. Located 2.7 km from the main entrance of the Madhav National Park, Shivpuri, can be visited from 8 AM- 6 PM any day of the year.

Madhav National park is situated in Shivpuri, Madhya Pradesh. I visited the park recently and i was charged with 750 ruppees for my car entry charges and then 360 was charges by the guide . For this amount i expect to see animals other than neelgai , deer or cattles . The park was not well maintained and the prices were steep . The park is huge with beautiful scenery yet not much to see

It's a really really really good place ! You must visit this place, this place has many animals and you will never get bored. Animals like tigers, bears and panthers are a bit rare, but still you will get to see animals like monkeys, peacocks, deer, and nilgays . Taking their vehicles is recommended if you don't want to damage your vehicle. There are trees of many types too, there is a castle called George Palace inside the forest. A place worth visiting 5 star ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐.

Went in winters. Not many animals to see. Basically a deer family national park, but there weren’t enough deers too. Also, there was not much greenery as I’ve seen in other national parks/wildlife sanctuaries. Although George Castle was nice.

The Madhav National Park is situated on the northern fringe of the Central Highlands of India forming a part of the Upper Vindhyan Hills intermixed with plateaus, and valley sectiions. The slopes are generally gentle and rarely steep. Spreading over an area of almost 355 Sq kms, Madhav National Park is a fascinating mix of natural splendours of history and architectural wonders. Madhav National Park is situated in the northern part of Madhya Pradesh in Shivpuri District, very close to the Shivpuri township This was notified as a National Park in the year 1958. The Park is unique in having both lake, meadow and forest ecosystems. Sakhya Sagar and Madhav Sagar are the two lakes in the southern part of the park, providing the aquatic biodiversity and lifeline for the terrestrial species. These lakes not only add to the natural beauty of the area, but also provide a permanent source of water to the wildlife, and a fine wetland habitat to the aquatic fauna including thousands of migratory waterfowls. Marsh Crocodiles are in abundance in Sakhya Sagar lake. Due to this, the lake looks like a "Crocodile Safari" and attracts special attention of tourists. Madikhera dam is situated in the North Western part of the Park.

Madhav National Park is situated in Shivpuri District of Gwalior division in northwest Madhya Pradesh, India. Two national highways pass through the park, the Agra to Bombay former National Highway 3 and the Jhansi to Shivpuri National Highway 27 (formerly N.H.25). The park was first noticed in 1956, at 167 km2, as Shivpuri National Park. In 1958, it was renamed Madhav National Park after Madho Rao Scindia, the Maharaja of Gwalior belonging to the Scindia dynasty of the Marathas, and was finalized the following year. Sakhya Sagar, a man-made reservoir within the park, has been designated as a Ramsar site since 2022. There are several small ponds in this national park, but the largest body of water is Sankhya Sagar, a reservoir, constructed for Madho Rao Scindia when it was still his hunting grounds. He also had constructed a second smaller reservoir by damming Manihar River, Madhav Sagar, known as Madhav Lake.A third reservoir was not included in the park. Located in the ecoregion of Khathiar-Gir dry deciduous forests, this national park has a varied terrain of forested hills and flat grasslands around the reservoir and is thus rich in biodiversity. The average rainfall is 816 mm. Shivpuri town in the state of Madhya Pradesh was formerly the summer capital and a much larger park was the former hunting preserve of the Scindia maharajas of Ujjain and Gwalior. After the independence of India, the area suffered degradation.[2] Agriculture and mining encroached on the former hunting grounds. Although the park was noticed in 1956, at 167 km2, as Shivpuri National Park and became the renamed Madhav National Park in 1959, degradation continued.[2][5] The last of the resident wild tigers were seen in Madhav National Park around late 1970. In 1982 a plan to add a new part of the park along the Sindh River was proposed. This expansion area included a corridor joining it to the original 167 km2,[2] which when completed would bring the park to 354 km2. (See map below in external links.) As late as the 1990s there was little effort to improve the conditions in the park. Illegal mining and questionable mining permits led to significant degradation in the park, so that in the 1990s conservationists took the matter the Supreme Court of India and by 1998 received an injunction terminating mining in the area. On the shores of Sakhya Sagar lake which edges the forests, is a boat club, from where the park visitors can see a number of migratory birds especially in winter, when many migratory waterfowls visit the area. A viewing lodge constructed by the Maharaja called the Shooting Box, is situated above the Sakhya Sagar lake. In the older days one could shoot wildlife, both with a gun and camera from here. Visitors could sit under cover and watch a tiger at a kill. All around the lake (at suitable points), the Maharaja constructed boat landing areas, picnic shelters, watch towers, hides, etc. and a network of well laid out metalled roads.(citation needed) At the highest elevation in Madhav National Park, 484.0 m (1,587.9 ft), is the George Castle (Bankhade Kothi). In 1911, the local Scindia ruler Madho Rao Scindia built the castle in his hunting park for an overnight stay by King George V of the United Kingdom. George V had intended to go tiger shooting there during his visit to India. However, the king shot a tiger before getting there, and did not stop at George Castle afterall. Although in some disrepair, it is a "turreted English-style castle, with Belgian glass windows and Italian tile flooring."

A quaint forest in Central India.. steeped in medieval and colonial history. You can take your own vehicle or one is provided. Both are moderately priced. Our guide Mr. Baig is full of anecdotes..made our trip interesting. Do drop by to see Cheetal, Sambhar, Neelgai, Deer, Crocodiles and if you're lucky, a leopard might be lurking in the bushes. Do check the park timings they're different in winters and summers.

Sankhya Sagar, also written as Sakhya Sagar, is a lake in Shivpuri & also a Ramsar site. It is an artificial lake as it was created on River Manier in 1918. The Sagar is spread across a huge area & maintains the ecological balance of the Madhav National Park. It has a mix of marsh & riverine fishes as well as marsh crocodiles. One side of the lake is a hill. It looks lovely specially when it reflects the changing sky colors. Though, its few parts were layered with invasive water hyacinth. Given how critical it is to the overall biodiversity of the area, the authorities must look into this.

A major tourist attraction in Shivpuri is the Sakhya Sagar Lake which borders the forests of the Madhav National Park. The vast expanse of water is surely a treat to watch and its calm and tranquil surroundings have a very soothing effect on the mind. A large number of reptiles, marsh crocodiles, Indian Pythons and Monitor Lizards are to be found in the Sakhya Sagar Lake. The lake looks stunningly beautiful at dusk when it reflects the changing colors of the sky. There is a boat club on the shores of the lake. The boat club is a very delicate structure and has glass panels. The boat club is connected to the Sakhya Sagar Lake by a broad pier. If you stand on the deck you are sure to be overwhelmed by the beauty of the scene in front of your eyes. The vast stretch of water and beyond it the Vindhyachal hills with their dense forest cover looks absolutely stunning

Beautiful museum with lots of Jain idols collection recovered from Shivpuri.

The Shivpuri Museum is THE place to go to if you want to understand the historical significance of Shivpuri. An abundance of exhibits (coins, paintings, sculptures etc.) & a wealth of information on monuments, ruins & temples from centuries will make you appreciate how ancient the Shivpuri area actually is! Think Neolithic!! Yes, so from Neolithic to sixth century temples to Rajput & Maratha eras to as late as the Indian freedom struggle (Tantya Tope’s Memorial is in Shivpuri), I was stunned at the significance of Shivpuri on India’s cultural fabric. This Museum can give a run to any of the museums in India; that’s the kind of potential it has!

Do not visit this place in off-seasons, the place is best in rainy season that means you have window of couple of months. The surroundings are really clam so nothing comes between you and the nature. If you go in a car they’ll charge you 300/- as an entry fees. All over experience was good but could have been better.
