Lake Biwa Museum

Aquarium
Lake Biwa Museum, located on the edge of the lake in Otsu, offers a fascinating collection that delves into the history and natural wonders of Lake Biwa. The museum features exhibits showcasing fossils, taxidermied wildlife from the lake, artifacts, and even a replica of a 1950s rural lake village. Visitors can also explore geological and cultural displays as well as enjoy a freshwater aquarium at the end of the museum.
Neat museum in Otsu located on the lakes’ edge. It’s only 500 yen of adults but 300 with student discount. Its full of exhibits displaying fossils, taxidermies of lake wildlife, and artifacts. I especially enjoyed the replica of a 1950’s rural lake village. Sadly the aquarium was closed when my friends and I visited in late April. Maybe it’ll be open on my next trip. My only recommendation for the museum is to add more English descriptions. There was limited English, so I only was able to understand about 5 percent of all the descriptions. It may bring more tourists. I did however increase my knowledge on Lake Biwa by a lot today.

It's an exciting place. The most exciting is the aquarium. The expo is also great. Got some really historic Edo era Japanese setting. A visit with kids is highly recommended.

Large museum with a lot of exhibits, ranging from geological to cultural. It also has a pretty decent freshwater aquarium at the end of the museum. Currently undergoing facade renovation and the outer part is mostly scaffolding. You currently need reservation to enter. Access is quite difficult and it is recommended to use your own car.

The museum is a must visit place in Japan. I describes the origin till date of the great Lake Biwa and not just that it also features the evolution in technology and lifestyle of Japanese. The museum also has Large fish tanks with 1000s of fishes. The Museum also has a section where we can touch the fishes. The Museum also features various types of rocks in Japan and also the evolution of various species of animals.

The museum was very interesting, and the overall experience was definitely worth it! However, some animals had very small containers and were clearly distressed, like the gull and the seal, which kind of spoiled the experience

Mizunomori Water Botanical Garden is a tranquil oasis where you can stroll along trails surrounded by flourishing trees and flowers. The entrance fee is reasonable, and there's ample parking for both cars and bicycles. This popular spot is frequented by locals and offers a refreshing experience next to the Biwako Museum. Visitors can explore outdoor lake viewing points, a greenhouse showcasing water lilies, an indoor plant exhibition, and captivating lotus flower varieties.
Such a cute garden! There’s so much to see outdoors and you also have a few lake viewing points. There’s also a green house with water lilies and an indoor plant exhibition. It was only ¥300 when we visited. Well worth a trip when you’re by Lake Biwa and want to be surrounded by nature!

Sights & Landmarks
Kusatsu-juku, the former headquarters of Tokaido and a crucial transportation point linking to Nakasendo, is a historical landmark housing various ancient relics such as old costumes, woodblock prints, and documents documenting the Edo-era Kusatsu. The site was frequently used by daimyos due to its strategic location. Visitors can enhance their experience by using the "Pocket Curator" app on their smartphones for commentary at important spots in the facility.

It seems that many daimyo used it because there was only a key point of transportation called the junction with the old Nakasendo. If you put an app called "Pocket Curator" on your smartphone, you can listen to "commentary" at the highlights of this facility. I had it installed when I visited other museums before, so I could use it as a dedicated guide here as well. By the way, this app can also be used at "Kusatsujuku Kaido Exchange Center", which is a few minutes walk from Kusatsujuku Honjin. Here you can hear stories with the motif of Yaji Kita Dochu. The main shrine remains in Kusatsu, which was a post town on the Tokaido and Nakasendo routes. Honjin is a 5-star luxury hotel where Daimyo (feudal lords) and later historical figures stayed. The name of Takumi Asano, the Shinsengumi, and place cards remain in the guest book. It is a Japanese-style room with a hallway, and when there are many guests, the hallway also becomes a room. The accommodation book remains for 181 years, and it seems that items left behind 150 years ago were also stored in the storehouse, and some of the items have been released. "Where is Hijikata Toshizo's kissel displayed?" "Hi, I'm taking a break today." From the dirt floor of the kitchen, I put on my sandals and headed to Rakuzakan. Since it's located on the Tokaido Route, I thought it would be a normal inn even though it's called the Honjin, but since it was only used by VIPs, it was built like a castle to protect it from enemies.
