Shopping
Indoor mall featuring department stores, popular chain retailers & a food terrace for global eats.
So glad that this shopping mall was renovated over the past few years. The new shopping areas are clean and beautifully designed, including a large indoor food court area that’s significantly better than before, along with several new restaurant additions.

As shopping mall experiences go in North America this visit was just average. Good amenities including the Terrace Food Hall but the anchor shops looked tired and probably still suffering from post Covid issues. Good outdoor sitting area next to the relocated Apple Shop.

Love the new north end courtyard as a great place to hang out. Waiting to see how they update and remodel the rest of the mall. Glad they have some designer and luxury accessories to choose from.

First visit to Hillsdale Shopping Center post-pandemic. Was at their food court which is a great improvement from the old one! It’s so chic and clean! Self-service- so yes guys, clean after yourselves! Kudos for putting waste separation bins, there’sca water fountain to fill your personal wayer bittles if you brought them along! Mostly asian restaurants- japanese.

A very good place to shop. I will think twice to name this as a upscale shopping center. You can find some very reputed brands here. There are some very interesting shopping offers here. We visited during the festive season and were happy to see the several offers to choose from. We had a very good shopping experience here and found all that and more what we were looking for. Apart from shopping one can also enjoy a good meal here. There is a food court to help you to satisfy your hunger. We could enjoy hot food. Relax recharge and then continue shopping. I initially planned for a quick visit but ended up spending a whole day there. You must visit this place if you are looking for a decent shopping experience. Happy shopping....

This is unequivocally unique and the best mall in all of San Mateo County. There are every kind of store looking 👀 for. Its diverse and has huge collection of stores, outstanding atmosphere to spend time with your family and loved ones. Safe environment with multiple options. It does attract a lot of tourists too and lately affordable and friendly place. Big department stores like Macys, Nordstrom Highly recommended

A must see store when you are at Hillsdale Shopping Center. The Sock Harbor located on the first floor right in-front of Kiehls is a one stop shop for your gift giving ideas. The store has lots of fun sock prints and themes, fun slippers, Stance products, college team socks l, sports socks, dog magnets, souvenirs, name it 😊
Mafe de Jesus — Google review
Classic and classy mall. Large with many wonderful stores, huge new cinema, places to eat both inside and outside. Food court includes composting and two height levels for handwashing. And how many malls can boast Bufano sculptures? Improvement needed for accessible parking spaces. Difficult to find in the parking structure.

Great shopping mall well clean and neat👍👍. Nice to see all the stores are open again 👌👌. Also nice to see all the security gards 🧑‍✈️👩‍✈️👨‍✈️👩‍✈️ and police officer 🚔🚔 around to keep it safe. Great spacious food court 🥗🥙🍲🥘🍛.

Spent about a hour window shopping as our main purpose was to get our kids and experience Wetzels pretzels, which they enjoyed very much. While not as large as some of the mega malls being built these days, you can find just about whatever one needs here; Macy's being one of the staple department stores. UPDATE Oct 2022, revisited mall at one end is the Cheese Cake Factory which we ate dinner at and at the other end is a food court. Just outside the food court there is a colorful water fall with additional shops, a bowling alley and movie theater. Nice place to hang out.

I love to shop around in this place. It's not crowded. Parking was easy.
Juliet Joyee — Google review
I have been living in the Bay Area throughout my life and never heard of this mall before. I clearly don’t understand why nobody talks about or go to this mall, but this is one of the best malls to go to in my opinion. The mall has a very nice dining terrace where there are plenty of good food places to go to. As usual, they have Cheesecake Factory, Uncle Tetsu, and Panda Express. The design of that area pars with the one from Westfield Valley Fair Mall since to its modern design. Next to it is the exterior side of the mall. This is better than the one from Westfield Mall at Valley Fair because it has a bigger space for people to hangout and a place for children to play on the grass. There are good shops to go to such as Hot Topic, Macy’s, Apple Store, Zumiez, and GameStop. I am surprised that some shops sell anime products, which is something that doesn’t come across as usual. I highly recommend this mall to anyone who lives in San Mateo or closer to that city. There is plenty to do here!

Hillsdale Shopping Mall has been a delightful experience every time I visit. From its diverse selection of stores to its impeccable cleanliness, it's evident that this mall prioritizes customer satisfaction. Whether I'm looking to shop, dine, or simply stroll, Hillsdale consistently delivers. Kudos to the management and staff for maintaining such a top-tier shopping environment. A must-visit in San Mateo!
Daniel Flores — Google review
The older parts of the mall are underpopulated by relevant brands and run down (and serious hygiene issues caused by, for instance, Macy's claiming every women's restroom was out of order...). The newer parts of the complex - outdoors spaces, Apple Store etc. - are very nice, leading to a somewhat disjointed experience
王浩禾 — Google review
Typical American shopping mall. It's nice to have quite a few restaurants and shops.
Bab Bab — Google review
The shopping mall is a nice place to hang out with friends and family. Most of the time it’s not crowded. There are always some shops not in business every time I visit so it gives me a not-full feeling, as I’m used to the fact that all shops are opened every single day when I was in Asia (so active even on public holidays, and those are the time they get the most customers, always crowded) and Canada (except on public holidays, the Canadians close the entire mall). There are a lot of fun shops and restaurants to enjoy in the dining terrace.
Judy Margaret Chen — Google review
The newer, outdoor part of the mall is lively and beautifully constructed with ample seating and the requisite fountain and sculptures. Plenty of fun food options with indoor and outdoor seating. The indoor part of the mall is more basic and forgettable with the same old stores you see at every mall across America. The food court, which is the anchor that connects the new mall and the old mall, is expansive and inviting with colorful varied seating and decent upscale fast food choices. Very clean and chill on a Saturday July afternoon.

It is a beautiful picnic area where you can get panoramic views of SFO airport, Bay bridge, San Mateo bridge and the SF skyline. There are lots of picnic areas with restrooms which is surrounded by eucalyptus trees. It’s a really good place to view sunset.

Visited in Aug 21 and had a great time. Our visit was for fishing and hike and it was great for both. Looks like a great place for kids and sailboarding. They have a nice bait shack and snacks for purchase. Several bathrooms with running water are spread out. The parking fee of six dollars is well worth it.
Jeff B (Jeffery) — Google review
Great place for so many reasons. Beaches, bathrooms, playgrounds, CuriOddysey, boats, walking trails, launches for water activities like stand up paddle boarding, large grassy area for running, flat paved areas good for kids learn to ride bikes, picnic areas with grills that you can reserve, parking, informational signs about history and climate change. Entry is six dollars per car. If you get the San Mateo County Parks Pass you can visit any time and never pay to enter! Well worth it! Magic Mountain Playground - large double playground - part for older kids, part for younger kids. All fenced and gated so it's easier to manage littles who like to run. There is a gun range in the area so you sometimes here the gun practice which can be jarring, annoying, or triggering for some. Be aware that there is poison oak by the trails in the Eucalyptus Grove. Beaches are swim at your own risk - no lifeguard. Coyote Point is close to the airport - so you can watch planes fly in and out of SFO. There is a second playground close to CuriOddysey. Dogs are okay on leashes - EXCEPT - where marked "no dogs." Please respect rules regarding dogs! And pick up poop. Please don't encourage kids to have water balloon fights with those little balloons - they are hard to pick and worsen the micro-plastic problem in soil and sea - not good for people or planet! CuriOddysey is a WONDERFUL place - it has its own entry fee. Worth a family visit, for sure. Good for all ages to learn about enjoy science and nature. Mostly non-native plants - such as eucalyptus - but some drought resistant and native California plants have been put in. This is a wonderful place to spend time in - solo or with friends or family or a community group. Respect, care for, and enjoy this wonderful place.

Coyote Point Recreation Area including Beach area has been redesigned for flood aversion but what we received is a great beach front area, new bathroom, and wash station. The barbeque areas now have wash stations. The park is now transforming into a comfortable place to picnic.

SOUL STROLL 2014 - This was one of my favorite annual events. I haven't been in years after moving out from the Bay. I miss going every early in May. Sometimes the event was a conflict with Mother's Day plans but, for the most part I definitely went more than a handful of times. I love the interaction with everyone, the raffles, the prizes the option to walk 1, 3 or 5 miles. The fun warm up exercises, the guest speakers, the Annual t-shirts totes, and lunch, the booth giveaways, samples, and a lot of health information. Coyote Point is also a great place and a childhood landmark. It's always been a great place for events, gatherings and they have a lot to offer. Bike trails, Water, Trees, Grass, Exhibits, etc.
Kimberly Russell — Google review
It's ALWAYS a good time at the point. Been coming here since I was a child... The museum, fishing for stripers, walks along the protected environment, Beach with easy access restrooms for the kiddies to reach when theyre so busy playing they refuse to go until the last minute. Bring a kite! The wind perfect for that if you choose to hang by the beachy area. And it's safe, they've got a golf course and an on premises sheriff dept on site.
Tami Healey — Google review
Not worth paying for parking at the moment. Lots of trails and playgrounds are closed. Buff Trail is closed near Curiossedy so there’s no way to have a nice walk around. We ended up just walking in an empty parking lot near Eucalyptus. Go to Seal Point instead. It’s free

Hiking Trails
The Sawyer Camp Trail South Trailhead offers a picturesque and enjoyable hiking experience. This well-maintained trail features benches, restrooms, and beautiful views of the reservoir and surrounding hills. It is a peaceful and serene trail that provides opportunities for both walking and sitting to read or simply admire the scenery. However, caution should be taken with cyclists and roller bladers sharing the path, as well as avoiding poison oak along the way.
SIX miles long concrete road trail. Has restroom. The lake adds to the coolness. Good for walking and biking. Very soon it will be closed for maintenance. Please see the closure dates on the notice board picture that I am posting.

It's very pretty here. Lucky to have bathrooms, but they could be a little bit better with places to wash hands. Three stars for now since much of the trail was closed due to the bad weather this past winter. I understand there are only so many resources to clean up our parks and trails.

This is such a nice casual trail for if you're just looking for some fresh air and nice views. Even with all the rain when I was here, it was still quite a beautiful area to go for a stroll. I highly recommend it if you find yourself in the area. There is a nice paved trail, gorgeous greenery, and of course the reservoir itself. Makes for a nice relaxing walk, and some great photos!

Suburban Oasis. Being in the bay can be emotionally rough at times. This little spot is a great place for anyone to quickly get out in nature without having to drive super far from a populated area.

Excellent hike, completely paved, mostly flat.. you will find hikers, joggers, runners, cyclists. We started at the Sawyer Camp trailhead and went north till the Jepson Laurel tree which is 3.5m one way.. we started at 1130am and were back by 230pm (we had a baby and stroller and took a couple of breaks).. No dogs/pets allowed

Glad to find that this trail has finally opened up.The trail is paved and has a shoulder. You will see a few deers if you visit it early in the morning. But it's a nice tail to be on late evening in summers too. Nice view of the lake too.

My favorite running trail which is kind of close to the south bay. Out and back in exactly 12 miles. I went for a run early in the morning and it was so calm, serene and beautiful 😍 The trail is very well marked, with markers at every mile. There are also restrooms at both end points, and in other places in between too. There is a water fountain at the north trailhead. The trail is a bit hilly from miles 4 to 6 if you start from the south trailhead.

Best trails in the Peninsula. Very peaceful and beautiful. Stunning view at the reservoir. Safe and accessible. You can occasionally see deer on the hills and are surrounded by beautiful nature. Not a very long trail, maybe 30 minutes there and back. Go at sunset that way you can see the fog coming in from half moon bay. Stunning!
Anastasia Gonnova — Google review
The place is beautiful! Only the asphalt needs to be improved and the speed of cyclists monitored more. Sometimes it is dangerous to have an accident with cyclists sharing the road with pedestrians.
Sílvia G. G. — Google review
This is a really lovely paved trail along crystal springs reservoir. No completely flat but close. Lots of benches to stop and rest and enjoy the scenery. No dogs allowed. Restrooms available. I saw a lot of wildflowers on my bike ride. Google maps didn't seen to know exactly where it was coming from burlingame. It told me I was there about a mile to soon. Trail entrance is where crystal springs rd intersects 35. Not a huge amount of parking. I went on a week day about 2pm and parking was very full. No fee
Wendy N — Google review
This is a lovely easy trail to walk with benches along the way and three restrooms - one at the trail head and second one about 2/3 mile up and third one at the 3 mile mark. Beware of cyclists and roller bladers. The reservoir and the surrounding hills make this such a lovely spot to walk or just sit and read a book or gaze away. It is a quite trail and offers a lot. Beware of the poison oak. There parking at the dam and you can walk across the dam to the other trail head further south.

A beautiful garden sanctuary located inside the San Mateo Central Park. It is serene, zen, peaceful, thriving, wonderfully preserved and cared for. A nice way to spend time away from constant distractions and a step into calming nature to recenter, when needed. With respect to this amazing space, please observe rules and park guidelines: do not litter, play loud music or eat or drink inside. Sad to see a tree with people's names carved into it. Why do this??? Anyway, little guides are posted by the entrance and throughout the park to teach us about its origins and meaning. Also, it's a great space for photography, literally every corner is beautiful. We went in the early afternoon so it wasn't crowded, and very much appreciated everything. Cherry blossoms have also started to bloom yay 🤍🌸🇯🇵

Highly recommend coming here for a quick walk. It’s located inside the San Mateo Central Park. The garden itself is not big but it is very well maintained and looks amazing. It’s quite busy during the weekend They don’t allow ANY food or drinks inside, and they don’t allow strollers because the paths are quite narrow at times especially on the bridge.

A surprising beautiful Japanese garden in the middle of the bustling San Mateo. You don't see it from the outside as it is walled but also contained within Central Park. It is free to enter and although small, it is a lovely alcove of zen and peace. Go for a stroll and be happy.

Hidden in the middle of a residential/business small city within a centrally located Park is where you will find a gate almost invisible if not during "Open" hours that once you pass through (admission free) you will feel like everything around you except for the sky has transformed from a rare lovable city with in the States into a Japanese forest village not modernized by population for generations. Ever since I've discovered this Hidden Oasis, I've not only used it for occasional relatives & friends that come to visit from afar but at least once every couple of weeks as a perfect little meditation op to getaway to & recharge my mind 💆. The best part about it- Small area but very satisfying due to the couple of trails that have been perfectly routed within the mini forest with multiple areas to just sit & take in the comforting views from bonsais to the statues and the architecture of the landmarks , whether you decide to stay to they close or just do a quick stroll before dinner at one of the delicious restaurants on 3rd & 4th Street, this place will leave a very memorable impression on your Guests as well as have you feeling like you just stepped out of your favorite spa/massage center. If you go there for the first time soon.... Find the The Bird and The Turtle (Statues, not live) and let me know where they were that day?

Parking: on street. Hard to find empty spots. There's a few free spots.but most require paying at a machine, a few have a meter. The park is one of the best free entry Japanese gardens I have been to, it's not huge but is very well done. Better over all than the one in San Jose. Not as good as the paid entry for San Francisco. Nice pond, mini pagoda, little bridges, well groomed garden, very clean. Definitely see if you are in this part of the bay area

Laurelwood Park, the largest park in the city spanning 225 acres, offers a variety of trails that lead to Sugarloaf Mountain and provide picturesque spots for picnicking. This beautiful park features several hiking paths, playgrounds, and picnic tables with trellises. During Easter weekend, it witnessed the celebration of children's birthday parties.
Great local park for hiking, MTB, or just enjoying the playground. There are great views from the top and you can get there via 3-4 different trails of varying difficulty.

Laurelwood is one of our favorite places to hike with our dog. There is a large variety of trails to choose from and great views from Sugarloaf Hill. Some of the trails are very steep - take Natural Amphitheatre Trail for the easiest way to the top. At the base area there’s a nice kids playground and large grassy area that is great for picnics & lawn games.

This is a great place for Persian food. Great selection of meats and delicious dishes. I recommend trying to combo plate to get a few different options. They also bring out a basket of herbs, cheese, and bread to start is a complimentary appetizer. Recommend trying some Persian tea in the end of your meals.

I recently dined at this restaurant and was thoroughly impressed with the overall experience. The food was excellent, offering great flavors, and the portion sizes were generous, leaving me satisfied. However, I must say that the "kask-e-bademjoon" dish didn't quite meet my expectations; it lacked the same level of excellence found in the other dishes. Despite this, the overall dining experience was enjoyable, and I would still recommend trying their other offerings.

We had kashk-o-bademjan, koobideh and chenje. Kashk-o-bademjan had was so sour that was not any resemblance to traditional Persian one. I don't know what kind of recepie they are using. No fried onion, nor hot garlic. Chenje and koobideh were totally tasteless. The bread was good thought. The restaurant has potential but needs a lot of changes.

Delicious and generous portions. Lentil soup is the tastiest among all I've tried. They also gave a complimentary taste of delicious homemade cheese. The service is top-notch. The waitstaff is friendly. Thank you!

I'll be going over pros and cons of this restaurant, The Shalizaar Experience. The food was pretty good. I got a koobideh kabob, yogurt with cucumbers, chicken, and bread. You are firstly greeted with water and bread. You then can choose your option of beverage, which comes next. Lastly, you get whatever you ordered (chicken, koobideh, or others). Con: if you have a low appetite or have 2 or 3 people, ordering family style may be a bad option. This is because you get a ton of foods that just 3 people cant eat. One of the pictures lists family style. The atmosphere seems calm and classic. The food doesn't fit with the environment but it feels like your fitting the atmosphere with both styles of Italy and Mediterranean. Service is average. Service really helps and does every job appropriately but they don't seem in the mood of chatting or even smiling. It makes sense but it doesn't feel very warm, especially to the atmosphere. As a Persian, I've eaten these food, especially Iranian kabobs. They pretty much match in flavor.

We were in the restaurant in the evening without a reservation and still got a table. The restaurant is very well attended. The staff and the facilities are really good. My main course was beef kebap with Persian rice. Unfortunately, I found the food bland and was disappointed with the main course. My companion liked the food but it was not a highlight. In addition, there was free bread with cheese, nuts and spice leaves. This was really good.

Food is delicious authentic Persian / Mediterranean cuisine. Service is fine with attentive responsive waiters. Location is good with many dedicated parking spaces. Good for kids, groups and small parties. There is in house stone oven to bake fresh bread / naan. Try yogurt drink (doogh) for sure with Kabobs. Highly recommend this place for Persian food.

An unreal food experience for Sushi and Sake. Having grown up eating fish and various sashimi fresh from the sea in Hawaii, and working years on mixed fishing boats in Alaska, the preparation and freshness that we found here was beyond our hopes or imagination of what Sushi could be. The pairing with the various taster/selected sake was perfection, and the explanations that came with each tasting were wonderfully full. I could go on and on, but truly, the "About" section on their website accurately describes their goals, and man, do they exceed them: "[Chef Yoshi makes] sure the food he serves represents the waters he is surrounded by. Only the freshest and best ingredients, prepared with dedication, love, and passion, find their way to your plate....Whether an Edomae novice or sushi foodie, we hope you will leave with a feeling of euphoria." This was my families first outing like this since the Pandemic started, and it was so so so worth waiting for! Thank you to you both for the wonderful experience and food.

Easily the best sushi I've ever had. Subtle flavors perfectly complementing each other coming together for each course. Seeing Chef Yoshi's mastery up close behind the counter is just another perk of eating here. Reservations are tough, prices are high but the effort and cost are absolutely worth it.

You only realize why it’s hard to score a reservation at this 8 seater sushi counter until you try Chef Yoshizumi special sashimi and nigiri tasting menu. Nestled in downtown St Mateo, this Japanese oasis that looks like your neighborhood sushi joint have some of freshest & tastiest seafood I have ever tried. From the Japanese delightful Amberjack to buttery Kinki(Japanese rockfish) to delicious Bonitos nigiri to sea eel nigiri from southern Japan that literally melts in your mouth. Watching the knife action of Chef Yoshizumi was a real treat, he was kind, nice and always smiling. Service was on point and their Sake tasting and choices were delightful and complimentary to the fish courses. The egg custard cake at the end was scrumptious but we didn’t really like the almond custard dessert. Definitely worth the trip and worth another visit.

If you are looking for the best sushi in Bay Area, look no further. We have been to several different omakase restaurants (where the sushi chef decides what to serve you) in the Bay Area and yoshizumi is the best among all. Yoshizumi serves traditional edomae style sushi. He focuses on enhancing the taste of the original flavor of each fish, which is also the reason why we love this place so much. There is no fancy sauce and no fusion at all but he picks the best fish and all you need is some simple salt/soy/fresh made wasabi. This is a cozy and initiate restaurant located in downtown San Mateo. It’s easy to find parking across the street (we always park at the parking lot across the street). Currently, they check vaccination records and only accept 7 guest per night due to COVID concern, which means it’s harder to get a reservation now. They open reservation 14 days ahead of time and make sure to reserve on time(I believe their reservation opens at 0:00am). Food: This is the best part of this place. We are always impressed as soon as appetizer begins and yoshizumi never disappoint us (even not during Japan’s typhoon season when the fish selection is limited when we came here last time). This month’s tasting menu is slightly different than last month. Chef yoshizumi changed how he dealt with ankimo and several other appetizers. (We really like the difference in its taste and texture. We had 7 appetizers and 11 sushi this night. It’s hard to list highlights of the night because each piece is like an art performance and it has its unique and distinguished umami/texture that you can hardly find it in other Japanese restaurants. Sushi Yoshiumi’s pieces may look minimal , but believe me the taste is so unique that we could never forget and that is what makes us keep coming back to this place after a while. The most impressive part of the nightis how he cut the squid to make it so thin but still with so much texture when you eat it. We (my boyfriend and me) are always full by the end of the course but we always love to try 1-2 additional sushi just so we won’t miss this place too much. I almost forgot to mention their ginger is the best ginger we have had and we always ask for so much more to go with the sushi courses. Besides the best quality of fish yoshizumi selected, sitting in front of yoshizumi and watch how he prepared each course is fascinating. Tips: eat each course as soon as he gives it to you with your hand.

Probably the best sushi in the bay area. Update: Jul 2021 Indoor dining open again at Yoshizumi, but with a reduced capacity. The sushi is still just as consistently good. Perfectly seasoned and warm rice and gorgeous nato. Service was warm and attentive. Really a true sushi lover's place - uncomplicated perfection.

By far the most amazing dining experience I have ever had. Everything from start to finish was just exquisite. Considering that I am usually not as adventurous when it comes to sushi...this blew my mind. Definitely recommend this place. Its worth every penny and then some. It was tough getting reservations so you have to be ready and just take 1st available seating and make it work! It totally makes sense why it is so exclusive. The quality is beyond anything I have ever had. My life changed forever!

American restaurant
Vault 164 Restaurant and Bar is housed in a converted bank with high ceilings and original fixtures, offering an eclectic American menu. Located in the historic Crocker Bank Building built in 1925, the restaurant maintains its neo-classic exterior while featuring a swanky interior. The menu includes unique dishes, including options for fans of impossible meat. While some diners found certain dishes slightly disappointing, others praised the great food and friendly service.
Great food, great friendly service. Love that it is not only got kids friendly menu but kids get to eat for free on Sundays. Service is fast and seafood dishes are not overcooked. Parking are very easy to find on Sundays. You can park anywhere on the streets or covered parking structures.

Decent place to go out and at at. There are a number of unique dishes on the menu that certainly is worth a try. For those who are fans of impossible meat, this restaurant has a couple of dishes that uses that well. Slightly disappointed in the Ginger Braised Short Ribs because it was bit too chewy and the flavor was a bit bland, didn't penetrate the meat fully to give it a full marinated feel. I also wasn't digging the sauce, but the place is still good.

Lovely staff, nice portions. The sea bass was well prepared. Tasty cocktails and happy hour food offerings, too. The flaming birthday dessert topped off a great meal.

Indian fare from sustainable ingredients served in a polished bi-level space with chandeliers.
Wow! Food is delicious and presentation is great! We have four people, ordered four small dishes to share and two main courses: butter chicken, curry fish. Coconut rice and garlic bread. Everything is so good. My favorite is their appetizers and drink. Don’t miss it.

Last night, my friends and I celebrated a birthday at Saffron in Burlingame. We had a reservation for four through the Resy app, and upon arrival, we were promptly seated by the friendly host. Our table was situated right under a beautiful chandelier, and the service was both amiable and efficient. After being offered water and drinks, the staff was very helpful in guiding us through the menu and making recommendations. The food we ordered was delicious, and we may have gone overboard due to our excitement. To top it off, they surprised the birthday girl with a special dessert. Overall, we had a fantastic time and look forward to our next visit.

One of the best Indian restaurants I’ve ever tried. The food did not disappoint, in fact, it was really good. I walked in without a reservation but was immediately seated at the bar. I suggest calling for a table ahead of time because the place filled up in minutes after I got there and they also had people waiting outside as I was leaving. For one who doesn’t consume chili all that much, the spice level was perfect, so if you’re anticipating fire in your mouth, you might want to consider asking your server for added heat. ☺️ Staff were brilliant, by the way, they were all warm and friendly which one should expect from a more intimate space - and they did it just well. Absolutely recommend!

Best kulfi (Indian ice cream) ever within or outside of India. Food quality is close to delicious home cooked food with authentic taste which is rare to get in US. Everything including naan and lachha parantha were cooked to perfection.

Very tasty Indian food with plenty of creativity. All the appetizers and main courses were delicious. I ordered a drink that the waitress recommended but found it a bit too smoky and spicy for my taste. Definitely coming back for the food when in the area.

Outstanding dishes. The General tso's cauliflower, corn soup, beet berry salad, dosa, and sliders had rich and vibrant flavors. Very fast and attentive service. Patio seating was pretty, but a little loud as we were seated near some big groups. Will definitely be back.

Food: 5/5 Just outstanding. It’s clear that they have gone to the depths of indian cuisine. Vada pav was phenomenal. Amazing balance of different textures and overall flavours. Spicy flavorful masala with crisp and soft bun! Corn soup was again outstanding. Thick creamy texture and awesome flavor profile. The Saag was mindblowing. Again - great textures and well rounded flavors. Even the rice with hints of coconut and tempered daal and the lachcha parantha felt carefully crafted. The whiskey sour also was great. A tad bit strong but still good to have again. Service: 5/5 Such professional and helpful servers. Our little one was being cranky so they were very accomodating. Ambiance: 5/5 Awesome fine dining experience. Very well done interiors.

Every dish is so delicious. Perfectly spiced food. Non veg and veg are equally flavorful. Good that food is not Americanized like most fine dinings. Best Indian restaurant in Bay area.

Very nice Indian food with elegant flavors. Mangalore fried chicken was on point. Fish Moilee with coconut rice was fantastic. Kofta with Naan was also good. Highly recommend this place and would come again.

Japanese restaurant
Restaurant
Wakuriya is a compact and upscale Japanese eatery that offers multicourse kaiseki menus at specific seating times. It is highly regarded as the top Kaiseki style restaurant in the area, known for its impeccable food preparation. Some standout dishes include squid and whelk cooked on a heated stone BBQ, yamaimo gratin, and wagyu beef with Maitake mushroom. The combination of flavors is exceptional.
Last night, I had the pleasure of dining at Wakuriya in San Mateo, and I must say, the experience was quite remarkable. From the moment I stepped in, the serene and welcoming ambiance set the stage for what was an exquisite culinary journey. The service at Wakuriya was impeccable. The staff were attentive and knowledgeable, ensuring a seamless and enjoyable dining experience. Each course of the kaiseki menu was presented beautifully, showcasing a blend of traditional Japanese culinary artistry with subtle Californian influences. The highlights for me were the braised sea bass with its delicate yuzu gelee and the perfectly cooked Wagyu beef, which was both tender and flavorful. However, while the food and service were exceptional, I have some reservations about its Michelin star status. The quality and presentation were top-notch, but I felt that the overall experience, while delightful, did not fully align with other Michelin-starred restaurants I’ve visited in terms of creativity and culinary innovation. Additionally, considering the price point, I found Wakuriya to be slightly overpriced. While I understand and appreciate the quality of ingredients and the skill involved in preparing such dishes, the cost seemed a bit steep when weighed against the overall dining experience. In conclusion, Wakuriya is undoubtedly a great restaurant that I would recommend for those seeking high-quality Japanese cuisine in San Mateo. The serene atmosphere and meticulously prepared dishes make for a memorable dining experience. However, if you’re looking for a Michelin star-level experience, you might want to temper your expectations slightly, especially considering the price. Nonetheless, Wakuriya remains a gem in San Mateo’s culinary scene, and I am glad to have experienced its offerings.

Absolutely incredible. If you can get a reservation, you have to go. It's the best food you'll ever eat in a strip mall. Each dish was so thoughtful and delicious.

The overall taste of the food was exquisite, with a particular highlight being the second course featuring hotate scallops with turnip soup and sautéed Hokkaido cod 'kumoko' (soft roe). Love the chef’s selection of sake flights! Amazing service. However, I wished for a more substantial inclusion of sashimi/seafood in the courses, as the main course seemed to lean towards regular beef or pork instead.

Kaiseki experience was top notch with many creatively composed seafood dishes. The tai snapper with uni in spinach dashi sauce was the best savory dish. The yuzu milk mochi was a pleasant delight! The menu will change though. Highly recommend if you can get a reservation...only three tables per night

It's difficult to book an appointment but it's understandable because they are a Michelin star restaurant. I had a great experience here. Their dishes have quite creative decorations and equally unique flavors.

So good. Love this little place. Everything carefully prepared and you could just taste the thoughtful execution that goes into each and every dish. We thoroughly enjoyed our meal here and we're recommended to anyone looking for a romantic evening out. Apparently it's also a favorite for birthdays. I really hope the five cups of green tea tonight doesn't keep me awake at night tonight!

My friends and I had a wonderful night here. The best Kaiseki style restaurant in the area. I would definitely come back if I could get reservation again. Food is prepared to perfection. My favorites include 蛍烏賊(squid) and つぶ貝(whelk) on a heated stone BBQ, yamaimo gratin, and the wagyu beef with Maitake mushroom. The combination is excellent. Server is great, very attentive and introduced the sake menu pretty well. We ordered fruit flight (nigori, plum and yuzu sake) and premium sake flight and really enjoyed it.

This is my absolutely favorite Kaiseki in the Bay Area, also the only Michelin Star restaurant that I keep coming back to. My review is a little bit overdue (the last time I dined in the restaurant was 2019 but I did order takeout dinner during 2020), but I really want to share my experience. This restaurant is hard to get a reservation, the process is to call at midnight and leave a message on reservation detail. If you're able to secure a reservation, the restaurant will call back the next day to confirm. For all the times I have been here, I have never been disappointed by the food. I could really tell that the chef puts a lot of thoughts into each dish. Each dish was so intricate and so fresh. Their service was also exceptional. Their menus refresh from time to time, but I always get their Sake Flight! My favorite is their fruity Sake Flight. I can’t wait to come back and dine at this restaurant soon!

The service is good. Sashimi and other seafood are very fresh and nicely arranged like food art. However, wagyu is a little bit overcooked. The starters are the most impressive ones. Overall worth the money (so big size and all good quality and pricy raw materials).

Finally got in here again. Mostly as good as before. Overall I will say it is 3.8. First dish is sushimi grade shrimp and scallops. They are pre-flavored. You can eat them like sushimi or put them on the hot stone. Personally, I think just eating raw is good enough. It offered two egg dishes. One is steam egg with fish and the other is stir fried egg with mushroom over rice. I think one egg dish is enough. The whole set I think is missing fried stuff like fried fish or veggies. Most disappointed dish I think is the beef. It is very soft but no beef flavor. I think a little rock salt will bring out the flavor more. Most impressed dish is the fruit dessert. I am not a fruit fan so it is a surprise. The milky sauce made the desert a whole. It is light and you want to have more. Overall, a good dinning experience.
