Grand Island

Grand Island is a city in central Nebraska. The sleek Stuhr Museum of the Prairie Pioneer traces the area’s early history. In restored Burlington Station, Tri-City Model Railroad Association exhibits a sprawling model of mid-20th-century Grand Island. Southwest of the city, Crane Trust Nature & Visitor Center offers trails, a butterfly garden and blinds for viewing migrating sandhill cranes along the Platte River.

The Chocolate Bar is a trendy establishment that offers customers a variety of delectable treats and refreshments. This chic cafe boasts a contemporary and sophisticated atmosphere, perfect for indulging in their homemade chocolates, light bites, espresso beverages, and cocktails. Operating from Monday to Saturday throughout the day, visitors can enjoy an array of freshly baked goods, sandwiches, wraps, or salads alongside an impressive assortment of coffee drinks such as the Cuban latte.
Awesome spot, the staff is always patient and friendly and the coffee is perfect every time. The lunch menu has good variety, today I tried their pesto bella sandwich and it was delicious! Highly recommend for anyone who loves trying local places, visitors and GI residents alike.

Very good food, and service was awesome. Highly recommend. It's not a low priced menu, at least for dinner, but the quality of food and drinks was very, very good. Will return.
Matt Redman — Google review
I loved the food. The presentation was great, the flavors complex and the dessert was decedent. It's a cute place with a back room for parties, but the front area where we sat felt crowded even though the restaurant wasn't busy. The decor is a bit plain, which added to my surprise how nicely our food and drinks were presented. Although the prices are on the upper end, it was all worth it. The service was friendly and quick. I will definitely return for the dessert and coffee alone
Brandy Ertzner — Google review
Hands down, the BEST blended mocha I have ever had in my life! And such a peaceful, friendly atmosphere. The Chocolate Bar is one of my favorite hangout spots!
Tori Hofrichter — Google review
I had the ham and cheese panini, it was amazing. The hot chocolate was also fantastic and had a lot of foam on top.
Kit Brooks — Google review
I hosted a book signing event at the Chocolate Bar just days before Christmas (2023) and it went fantastic. Jen was so amazing to work with. She was available for planning and willing to adjust to my needs. The room was set up just as I had requested. The event was a huge success, and the room was packed...the staff was so warm to all of the attendants! After it was over, I enjoyed a delicious meal from their menu in the dining area, where I received incredible customer service. Great Job, Chocolate Bar!

Delicious Tiramisu latte and shared chocolate cake with my daughter who had a Kinky Breeze. Will definitely go again, we both enjoyed it!

Enjoyed a nice evening with my wife. Friendly staff, great selection on the menu, food was great. I must say the cake was exceptionally good.
Frank Henderson — Google review
We love the ambience of the place. Coffee and food are very yummy. You got to come see…
Robert Waite — Google review
I'm really glad I stopped here. The food and my latte were absolutely delicious. It's not a super cozy place, which is what I usually look for in a coffee shop, but this is a little bit more of a restaurant vibe and they were busy enough to need the extra space.
Kendra Vanderbeek — Google review
We used the Chocolate Bar’s catering service to order wraps (Thai chicken, turkey berry & Swiss, and buffalo chicken) for a bridal shower this weekend. Their communication was very timely and they were so friendly to work with! When we picked up our order, the wraps were individually wrapped for added freshness. They were a BIG hit and I know that many of our guests will be visiting the Chocolate Bar to order more! Thank you!!
Sarah Haag — Google review
A surprisingly upscale and modern coffee bar that distinguishes itself from the typical offerings of the area. With a sprawling layout that includes a coffee bar, additional seating favored by locals, and an event area, it caters to a variety of needs and preferences. The menu boasts novel and bold coffee concoctions with unique flavors like tiramisu and salted caramel lattes, appealing to those seeking something out of the ordinary. However, traditional coffee lovers can still find solace in a well-made mocha or cortado, although the execution of these classics, particularly the mocha, might not meet the expectations of coffee aficionados due to issues with sweetness, temperature, and frothing. Despite these drawbacks, The Chocolate Bar offers a refreshing and modern take on the coffee scene in Grand Island, making it a noteworthy destination for both visitors and locals alike. It stands out as a vibrant spot in the city, providing a much-needed alternative to diner coffee and traditional "espresso" bars.

Much of the food was very good, but the prime rib was under-seasoned.

Vietnamese restaurant
The Noodle House is a Vietnamese restaurant that may initially leave you uncertain, but it proves the old saying "don't judge a book by its cover" to be true. Relying on previous reviews, we were not disappointed. As travelers passing through, we sought something unique and were pleasantly satisfied. The noodle bowls are sizable, flavorful, and satisfying. The menu offers a variety of options including delicious egg rolls that come with an enticing sauce.
My small beef pho was huge! I was served quickly, and the ingredients were very fresh and piping hot. It remained steaming until I finished. I made an effort, but I couldn't finish the whole thing. It was delicious! When you're done, you go to the front desk and close out there. The price was very reasonable too.
Kaitlin B — Google review
Friendly waitress and wearing mask; Foods was good; Cozy and vintage decor inside the restaurant.
Green Angel — Google review
Consistently good food and an always very friendly staff. The spring rolls are the best anywhere! Soups are always hot and full of flavor. The service is great too. The building on the other hand is old and in bad shape. No atmosphere whatsoever. The bathrooms are dirty and grungy. I choose to take out. Again the food is really good but best eaten in the comfort of your own 'atmosphere'.
eM — Google review
This place is soooooo delicious. I have only tried the pho Tai Nam but it is just out if this world. The broth is is so tasty, the vegetables taste fresh, and the meat has great flavor. This place is always busy and the service is phenomenal as well. Seat your self, pay at counter, closed on Mondays. HIGHLY RECOMMEND
Nicholas Rybicki — Google review
The food is always delicious, fresh and made to order. They have phenomenal customer service!
Griselda De Anda — Google review
Wasn't sure what to think about this place, but it's a clear case of not judging the book by its cover. Went off of some previous reviews for this and we were not disappointed. Being travelers passing through, we're looking for something interesting to fare, and this hit the spot. The noodle bowls are large, tasteful, and filling. We had a variety of things, including egg rolls and would recommend everything we had. The pork chops were also very good with an interesting Asian flavor.

First time trying this place out and it was DELICIOUS! They do not hold back on portions and everything tasted fresh. Definitely a fan now! Can't wait to go back and try other items on their menu!

Great food. Good service. Popular place. Loved the Pho and Spring Rolls.

Delicious pho, friendly service, generous portion size. Excellent! The egg rolls and the sauce they come with are very delicious. Highly recommend the pho, choose your favorite meats. A good value for the price.
Jonny Case — Google review
I had the beef Pho and it was great. The amount I got was way more than I could eat at one time. The veggies that came with it literally looked like they had picked them from a garden and brought them in fresh.
Matt Parlane — Google review
Very good food and a comfortable atmosphere. The staff is incredibly nice and helpful (never had pho before).
Drew Baker — Google review
Delicious food with really good portions. Food came out quickly and was so filling. The employees were super nice and helpful with answering questions.

Restaurant
A renowned lunch counter in Grand Island, Coney Island Lunch Room has been a cherished part of the local culinary scene for over eight decades. As a long-standing family-operated establishment, this nostalgic diner on the eastern side of downtown offers an array of classic American dishes. Its cozy interior boasts original decor from 1933, including an intact menu proudly displayed on one wall. Patrons can enjoy their meals at either the counter or in comfortable booth seating.
We LOVE Coney Island! The food and service are ridiculously consistent. Eat in or take it all the way back home, you’ll be happy you did.

Old world style hotdog stand. Been around since the early 30's. Staff was friendly and kind. The service was great. Atmosphere is very nostalgic, from bygone era. I had the chili, which I would say could have used more flavoring, but my own personal opinion. A co worker had the coney dog fully loaded and said it was delicious. So will definitely try that next time around.
Robert Mcclintock — Google review
Stopped by on our way to go watch the Solar Eclipse. Food and service was top notch! The gentleman that served was very friendly and speedy. Definitely recommended if your in the area.

Never had a bad experience here. Excellent food and gets ya back to a nostalgic place. Love it when we get chance to dine there. Everyone is friendly and is very upbeat. If ya get the chance, you absolutely have to try eating here. It may be a bit pricey but definitely worth it. Chocolate malts also a definite must

Amazing Coney dogs and chili. I eat here every Saturday. Love the food and the owner is an awesome guy. I can’t say enough good things about this place. Highly recommend!!!
Randy Hunt — Google review
George, the owner, is such a great guy. He runs the business very well and is kind. All of this on top of some amazing food at the best price you'll find anywhere. Definitely try the fries, the coneys, the burgers. Heck, try it all!
Ian Osborn — Google review
A local and nationally known, family owned restaurant. The traditional booth and counter seating bring back a nostalgic diner atmosphere. If you're a local or just passing through, I'd highly recommend stopping in for a great meal. Best coney dogs I've ever had.
Vinny G — Google review
Old school cafe with delicious Coney Island style chili dogs and shakes made by hand the old fashioned way. Decent prices! Old menu displayed on the wall takes you back a few decades with a price for hot dogs...15 cents! Managed to stay open during all the craziness over the last couple of years!
Joe Kasal — Google review
One of the worst places I’ve been to here in GI. Was the first time and the last time I have gone or will go to. The owner didn’t greet us when we walked into the restaurant. Apparently reading the newspaper was more important. The “waitress”?, was not personable at all! The hot dog was very hard, didn’t look cooked. The buns were probably store brand, like walmart - it just fell apart. They don’t serve their sink water with ice! Just an all around under horrible experience. I don’t know how this place stays open
Chrissy Perez — Google review
Love, love, love the coney! This is a busy lunch room first opened in 1923. It still has a 1933 menu up on display. Sit in a few booths or at the counter. I would recommend getting 2 coneys, french fries, and a chocolate malt.
Ginny Shueey — Google review
Ran by a man with an incredible memory, just like his father. The food, service, and atmosphere are the three reasons you pay Coney Island a visit. It hasn't changed and that's what makes it perfect.
Keith Stueven — Google review
This was an interesting pit stop, the burger was average and the shoestring fries were pretty good. My friend had the scrambled eggs which were thrown together and a bit dry. The bacon was super greasy and crispy.
Tom Gubernat — Google review
This place is a family owned business on the second generation. I've been going here since being a kid. Best coneys ever

Great food! Great attitudes! Fun to be in small town America and eat at a REAL Cafe! We were traveling through Nebraska with our family and there were 8 of us. Seated immediately and had a wonderful breakfast. Just wish we would’ve been there later in the morning to try the pie! Charla was the best, very attentive and did a great job! Food was excellent!

We stopped here in search of the best pie in Nebraska (Something we do in every state). We were helped by a lovely young woman who brought us 3 different slices of pie that were made by her grandma. We loved every single bite! We happily declare Farmer's Daughter Cafe to have the best pie in Nebraska and we plan to eat there again next time we drive through!

It feels like home. Lovely workers and delicious food. The chef was singing along to the radio, too. That was great! Happy in his work. 😀

Driving cross-country and stopped here. Very nice service with good good and phenomenal peanut butter pie. They even hurried the service and boxed up our pie and drinks to get us back on the road. TY

Step back in time: A classic American small town diner experience. Picture this: a quaint county diner in a sleepy small town, with locals that could easily be cast in a Hollywood western. The coffee is strong, and rough, just like the farmers who frequent this joint. And the hashbrowns? Well, let's just say that they come straight out of a package, but with a smile on the side. It's everything you'd expect from a classic American small town diner experience.
Cam (@EatArvada) — Google review
This was our first time here and we live 2 hours away but will definitely return. I had the chicken fried steak, which melted in my mouth, and eggs. My daughters had pancakes/eggs/sausage/bacon and that was also cooked to perfection. The pancakes were fluffy and big. Their bacon were very large compared to most breakfast diners so that was a very happy surprise. Their customer service was superb! All the waitresses were very courteous and on top of things and the kitchen staff had all our food done within 10- 15 mins. By far the best experience I have had at a restaurant!

I was greeted at the door with a friendly smile, and a quuck sit where ever you want. At 9:00ish the cafe was buisy but still had room. I ordered a chicken fried steak, eggs, hashbrowns, and toast. Very quick service. The waitresses were hopping. The cook was in the kitchen singing along to the radio, or his playlist. He was enjoying his day at work to its fullest. I will definately be back.

Wasabi Bistro is a contemporary eatery that offers a wide selection of Japanese and Chinese delicacies in a comfortable and casual setting. The restaurant prides itself on preparing exceptional Asian cuisine infused with the flavors of Japan, China, and Thailand. Their culinary team meticulously sources the freshest ingredients available, including daily deliveries of fresh fish, and crafts all their sauces from scratch.
We wanted to try out this sushi bar as we were in town for an event. We were seated immediately and our server Xena came by shortly after. The place is very clean and calming, not noisy. Our server Xena did a fabulous job, she was attentive to our table, made sure our drinks were full and kept us informed of the status of our meal. So the dining experience was excellent. The food was just as good as the service. I highly recommend if you are looking for quality sushi. I will definitely be coming back and recommending to anyone going to the area.

Awesome service! I had the seafood delight. They specialize in sushi... It was okay. Good portions. The Mocha mousse cake was an artistic masterpiece. Worth stopping in. Next time I will try the sushi.
Tom B. — Google review
YIKES. This place is struggling pretty badly from my experience. The staff was slow, stressed, and inattentive. A large collection of used glassware (at least 15 pieces) was allowed to steadily accumulate next to my seat at the bar where I was supposedly going to be able to enjoy my meal. For whatever reason, the guy making drinks never bussed these glasses and only continued adding to this mess along with the few servers. I ordered a hot and sour soup (the exact same foodservice-supplied version you find across the country at strip mall Chinese restaurants) and a dish called Red Curry Chicken. The actual "chicken" was either pork or chicken that had been frozen and thawed multiple times prior to being cooked. It was absolutely inedible. Texture and flavor were ghastly. Bummer. When I mentioned to the server that as a chef myself I found the chicken to be a form of inhumane punishment being served to guests, he just said "sorry sir" and didn't consider offering a partial refund or credit. Whelp. I would definitely advise against coming here or at the least ever ordering an entree with "chicken."
Josh L — Google review
Found out this restaurant after just stopping by Walmart. The place is very accessible and one of the only restaurants that's open late (until 10pm). It took a while for the server to get to us but it was a little busy that night so it's wasn't such a big deal. There were sooo many options but we ended up getting the Crispy California, Shrimp with Cream cheese roll and honey walnut shrimp. So far, this has been my best experience with sushi, everything was so delicious that we thought about coming back to try more! I would definitely recommend this to everyone even to those who hates sushi.

The calamari was really really good. The batter was light and airy and the calamari was cooked right…not chewy. Crab Rangoon has too much cream cheese in it. More crab would be nice. Shrimp pad nice was sweet and overflow with sauce makes it soggy. Shrimp tempura rolls was delicious and I wish they used a better “real” wasabi and ginger.

A must in Grand Island. Had a great dinner at the WASABI BISTRO! The staff seated us right away. The dinning area was spacious and clean, they have bar seating that faces into the sushi prep area too. We both had a sushi combo that came with soup & salad. The miso soup was good, the broth was excellent but the tofu was very mushy. The sushi was superb, they did an awesome job with super fresh ingredient and quality fish. The spicy salmon roll was great, along with the bbq eel (my favorite sushi). I had the sushi deluxe and my partner had the Chirashi which he said was excellent as well.
Tyson Doonan — Google review
It was a pleasantly surprising find for central Nebraska as we were driving through to Denver. The establishment offered a nice, warm, and welcoming atmosphere. Service was a bit slow, and our appetizer was served at the same time with our entrees. That said, the food was really good.
Gary Eisenach — Google review
The restaurant is a bit understaffed so be patient everyone is nice. The food was okay in flavor but lacked presentation and attraction. The Pad Thai was a bit pale in color and the noodles were soggy and overcooked. My sushi roll was lacking a little bit of rice and structure. It tasted fine but I've had better for a cheaper price. I'll give the place another shot but I'll keep my expectations low.

My husband I found a gem in Grand Island! This place was shocking and so underrated! We’re not from this area and surprisingly this amazing little restaurant can compete with the top 5 Asian Cuisines we’ve had thus far! Xena was our waitress, she was amazing, she listened, responsive, timely, etc.!! The food here was superb! Way to go Wasabi Bistro!

Came in with an open mind since I haven't been. Waiter was kind and just doing his job. I ordered a crunchy roll and they brought out a california roll. They argued with me that it was a crunchy roll when it was in-fact not. Other than that, food was great and good quality.

Oh boy. We came out for a date night. We RARELY eat out. The service here was absolutely HORRIBLE! We waited for our waters for at least 15 minutes (15 AFTER we decided to start keeping track). Waited for other drinks far longer. Would have understood if the staff had been busy, but the servers were hanging out behind the counter talking to the sushi chefs. We ordered several types of sushi to share; she didn't bring us plates. Sat with empty drinks and had to ask someone to bring our check. We were so frustrated! Do yourself a favor and get it to go.

Chaotic CF... We, 3 adults,1 teen and 1 older child went in at 4:20 pm. Restaurant was about half full. We were seated right away. Our server appeared about 10 minutes later with menus and then went about serving others. 15 minutes later she took our drink and appetizer orders. Another 10-15 minutes tick by, and she brought our iced teas. About 40 minutes later, she brought grandma's sushi. Another 20 minutes go by and she presents grandma and oldest grandson's orders. She then explains that somehow our appetizer order got missed and they were making it now. I asked her about the rest of our entrée orders. She said that she would be bringing them out shortly. We all received our orders, one-plate-at-a-time... my Happy Family order was room temperature. She then brought out the appetizer orders stating that the Manager is comping those (decent thing to do), thank you for that. We asked for extra napkins early in the dinner, but they didn't show up until she presented the check for $116.70. Not once asked if our drinks needed to be refilled. Seemed like nice atmosphere, but organization is not their strength. We have never been there, and will never go back. I left a small tip because I felt somewhat obligated to leave something...

Winner, winner, sushi dinner. Who wudda thunk? A great sushi experience in the heart of Nebraska. This is my second sushi surprise this summer in the Midwest. First, Ichiban in Dubuque Iowa. Now Wasabi in Grand Island Nebraska. What is the world coming to? We landed at Wasabi on a road trip West staying the night in Grand Island. Wasabi offers Japanese Chinese fusion fare in a wonderfully fung shue Asian atmosphere. We chose to eat a selection of small appetizer plates from the Sushi bar and Japanese side of the kitchen. Overall awesome! If the Chinese offerings are in the scale of our Japanese fare, this place is a hidden Asian treasure. Our starter of salt and pepper calamari was perfect. We were told the calamari rings are fresh and cut in house. The tempura batter is also proprietary to the house, and one of the best I've had in recent memory. Light, crispy, well attached, and perfectly seasoned and cooked to a golden glow. My wife had a Sashimi Salad which was a delicately dressed assembly of lettuce, tako, maguro, sake (salmon), and kani (surimi crab). She loved it. For me, Sushi in Nebraska? Hmmm? Ever adventurous, I ordered the appetizer sampler. It was perfect in every possible way. Fresh, portion, rice, and a very simple presentation. Right out of a no frills Tokyo bistro. A respectful bow to the chef. This plate led me to ordering an ala carte plating of tako, surf clam, and unagi. Equally delightful. We obviously loved our food, but it was the table service that made the whole evening memorable. Xena, our server was a true professional and made two passing strangers feel like we were at home with family. I'd hire this talented and gracious young lady instantly. All great dining experiences often have one detraction and Wasabi did have theirs by our tastes. Gyoza. We always try the gyoza at any new Japanese restaurant we visit. And my own are rave favorites among our friends. These were home made, cooked perfectly, but just didn't work for us. I anticipate a gyoza being a light skin containing a pork, Napa cabbage, and possibly shrimp mix. These were more like a large all-beef meatball in a pasta shell. They are great for what they were, and I am so sorry to criticize an otherwise AWESOME kitchen and sushi bar, but the gyoza just didn't work for us. Don't judge Wasabi on the one item we didn't care for. This place is a winner hands down. Yes, sushi and Japanese fare is being well represented in the heart of Nebraska. If I'm ever overnight in Grand Island again, I'm headed here. Thank you for a really delightful dining experience. (Photos don't do Wasabi justice)
