Steak house
American restaurant
Cattleguard Steakhouse & Saloon is a remarkable establishment renowned for its exceptional cuisine and top-notch service. The amiable mixologist skillfully concocts delightful beverages, while the delectable food is so irresistible that patrons often forget to capture it on camera. One fortunate guest managed to snap a picture of their exquisitely cooked steak, perfectly seared on the outside and medium rare within. Fresh and chilled salads accompany an assortment of warm rolls in a charming breadbasket.
This is from JUNE 25, 2021 This may or may not reflect the current state of the restaurant as of June 25. 2023 I am in town for a convention down the road and had an amazing meal out with my wife at Winchester Steakhouse in Buffalo WY. This is the first time it has ever happened to me- someone paid for our meal - a total stranger. We couldn't thank them as they had already left. I asked the waitress if they were a regular and they are, so I asked her to convey how much it meant. If you are reading this, I appreciate it more than you could know, truly. About the restaurant-The food was amazing, the people were genuinely wonderful, and honestly friendly. Steak cooked to perfection, well seasoned. Huge chicken parm portions. Service was very friendly and greatly appreciated. The manager was incredible too, he is a fellow vet and it was like talking to an old friend. He made my wife and I and I feel welcome in a way like we were at home. WELL DONE!

Our server was over the top professional and was very understanding with our food allergies steaks especially the prime where cooked perfectly to out temperature likes. Will definitely be here again. Just remember this is a steak house expect to pay a little more for a perfect steak well worth it.

We were visiting Buffalo for 3 nights and randomly chose this restaurant. We enjoyed our meals so much we came back again and we’re not disappointed. My husband’s steak was cooked to perfection. I had the halibut both nights and it was spectacular! We especially loved the scones that came in the breadbasket - nice touch! Would highly recommend this restaurant.

I'm editing this rating because I just found out there is no take out on Fri or Sat nights!!!! That's ridiculous!!!! Plus there food quality has gone down!!! Not a happy local!!
Sheryl Ridens — Google review
A+ for phenomenal service! The host and server were professional, friendly and quick in honoring my requests. I was happy to leave a good tip. My meal, however, barely rated a D. Brussels sprouts were abysmally mushy and my steak entree was tough, flavorless and grossly overpriced for the quantity and quality. The bottom shelf wine selection was also overpriced.

I had a birthday meal this evening and got the special Filet and lobster tail. I ordered a medium rare steak and got a medium well done steak and my daughter ordered corn dogs that were served cold and then the fixed reheated came out with the batter not completely cooked. For a steak house and a $75 special this was not a good value. A great atmosphere but not good value on food.

Just had a great dinner there. Husband had the porterhouse steak and I had prime rib, cooked perfectly. Our appetizer of fried green tomatoes with crab on top was terrific. Wait staff was on top of things and no waiting for anything. We’ll run restaurant. Place opened at 5:00, we arrived at 5:15, and by 5:30 the place was packed (on a Saturday night). Highly recommend.

VERY disappointed in our visit tonight! It took forever to get our food and when we finally did, my halibut was luke warm (at best) and I found a hair in my sweet potato (on my second bite). My husband had a NY strip, medium, and it was overcooked. My son-in-law had the chicken fried steak and there was absolutely no flavor to the steak/gravy. When we asked to speak to the manager, we were told told they were unavailable because they were in the kitchen cooking. He did end up coming out to talk to us and was EXTREMELY RUDE, ACCUSATORY AND UNPROFESSIONAL! We have eaten at this establishment for year. We will never return!!

Our steaks were delicious though my partner's was a little undercooked. I loved the cream of mushroom soup and the biscuits were amazing. We didn't make it to dessert but the next table's looked decadent. Service was friendly and efficient. The decor could use some upgrades. The fireplace was really cool. The wallpaper and floors look dated

Heavy cream in the cheese and broccoli soup. Taste pretty good. Steak and bake potatoes are GREAT. Atmosphere is real good. It’s a really good restaurant. I’m impressed for Buffalo, Wyoming.

Fantastic food and service! Friendly bartender that pours a great drink👍 The food was so delicious I forgot to take photos! Managed to take one of my perfectly cooked steak! Salads were fresh and cold. Served with a basket of assorted warm rolls. We had the 10 oz ribeye Perfectly seared on the outside and medium rare on the inside. All in all we were very pleased! I highly recommend you try this restaurant.

We were in town for the night and decided to stop here for dinner. We ordered the 16oz ribeye and the grilled Mahi Mahi. Before our dinner came they bring a basket of bread to the table. There were scones (biscuit like bread that was slightly sweet) and sesame bread that had a sweet glaze as well. This was freshly baked bread and it was outstanding especially with butter. It was a delicious beginning to our meals. Steak was seasoned ideally, a perfect medium rare and very tender 😋 👌 Mahi, Mahi was cooked perfectly and had a tasty herbal butter. Salad and soup were great as well and come with an entree. The only two complaints I have is that my baked potato was not hot. It was not hot enough to melt butter on, it also could have been cooked longer and my diet Pepsi was flat. Great dinner nonetheless, Thank you.
Jillybilly — Google review
Everything was so good! They were so busy, but our server (Shay) did a fabulous job! The bread and scones were a great start. Then they bring you a REAL salad - not that iceburg mess! I chose the 12oz sirloin (med rare) with a sweet potato and it could not have been any better! My son got Mahi Mahi and loved it! My wife and daughter ordered the chicken and said it was great! Thanks for a great experience in Buffalo!
Kevin B Price — Google review
Food had no flavor and was very bland, halibut came out cold and a hair was found in the sweet potato. Tried to offer up some constructive criticism to the owner who was also cooking last night. He got very upset and said he didn’t believe any of it. The customer is wrong. We were starving after waiting for the main meal for over an hour so we ate half of it. That was good enough for him. Very sad the new owners have turned this in to the worst place in buffalo when it used to be one of the best. Stay away from here if you are looking for a good tasting meal.

The Bozeman Trail Steakhouse in Buffalo, Wyoming is a stunning and friendly restaurant that offers excellent quality food and exceptional service. The staff, especially the waiter, go above and beyond to ensure a memorable dining experience. Along with their great sense of humor, they also provide recommendations for exploring Wyoming. The menu at this steakhouse is extensive and the food is served quickly after ordering. While some may hope for more affordable steak options, there are other dinner entrees available that come with two sides.
Never been to Wyoming before today. Absolutely beautiful ! Very friendly. Stopped in at Buffalo Wyoming to rest and grab a steak dinner. Went to Bozeman Trail Steakhouse and was Absolutely blown away by the excellent quality of the food and exceptional service by the staff. especially our waiter who not only provided above and beyond service but also had a great sense of humour and recommended some sites to see in Wyoming. Thank you Bozeman Trail Steakhouse . My wife and I highly recommend this restaurant ! we had the chicken fried steak and the ribeye steak with several coors banquet. cheers 🍻👏✌️

Service was good at first. Server misheard what my order was and when confronted she became snide and short with us. Did not say sorry or ask if i would like to have my correct order in, she wanted to argue saying that she wrote down a New York strip for my order so…but I had asked for “the usual” burger. I had to them ask for my correct order and had to wait an additional 20 minutes for my food and by then my kids were done eating so I just asked for to go boxes. We had desserts and they were fine, they need to make a brownie for their brownie sundae not a cake and call it a brownie. The peanut butter cake was flaky due to being in their freezer. The cheesecake was great. When it was time to pay the server still wanted to charge me for an “extra” side due to her mistake there was no discount for the mistake made just more sass and attitude. So rating the food as okay and service poor. Train your wait staff with the correct way to handle mistakes. We were not rude or had a mean tone at all but she sure was dismissive and rude. Would not recommend coming here unless they did retraining with staff on how to deal with when they make a mistake and to push mistaken food to the front of the cooking order. This is what my husband and I did when we were in this industry and because of this I still got great tips from the table and happy customers…not the case here and i for once did not leave a good tip at all.

Stopped here on our way to Billings. First of all, it is a nice place, a welcoming atmosphere and friendly staff. Now, onto the food. My fiance and I both had the cheesy broccoli soup to start. It was ok, but seriously lacked seasoning and tasted more like it was from a can. We then both had the 8oz Bison Sirloin at $35 a piece. This is where it went downhill fast. Upon ordering, the server asked us if we wanted any seasoning on our steaks. She offered Cajun or Montreal seasoning. Well, as someone who eats steak often, I assumed these were just optional from the basic seasoning you would expect with a steak. We didn't want either, and we both said just as it comes from the grill. Well, hell, if both steaks didn't come plain as plain can get. No salt or pepper or basic seasoning of any sort. It was like biting into a hot piece of bloody flavored meat. The server/ menu should have stated that the steak is very much seasonless unless you choose the Montreal seasoning, which I found out after the fact was the basic salt pepper, etc, seasoning. Not impressed. Also, I have had Bison before, and to be honest, this tasted like a regular steak. Bison has a distinct flavor, and this didn't have it. The fries were probably the best part of the meal. My fiance refused the steak and went hungry, and I dumped half the salt and pepper shakers on my steak to try and get some flavor with minimal results. Now, I would try this place again as it has potential, but there should be more disclosure on how the steaks are prepared/ seasoned. Telling me after that you don't season the steaks at all and you keep it optional because too many people complain about the seasonings, it's a pretty poor excuse. Would recommend, but be sure to ASK IN DEPTH ABOUT THE SEASONINGS on anything you order.

Prices didn’t match expectations of food, burger tasted good but looked like a frozen patty that took 45 minutes to make and get out by which point my wife’s loaded potatoes, became cold when served. Just thought for that price homemade potatoes, and not frozen pattie’s. $19.50 pictured. High note, their holiday dip tasted amazing.

Had supper here and the meals were good and service ok. Like everywhere else we have gone, they can’t employ enough staff. We had Ribeye and Filets with baked potatoes. Nice covered patio.
Ken Davis — Google review
Very good food and large portions! Reason a star was lost was because of the cold loaded baked potato that came with my main course...I didn't complain because all the other food was filling.

Montana is my home and this restaurant was very cozy and had that wonderful western aesthetic. Tracey was out server and she was so amazing a patient with us. Very, very attentive. We had just gotten done with a 10 hour drive and my two daughter and nephew where very disruptive and she didn't skip a beat. We didn't take photos of our food but dang, those steaks (prime rib and ny strip) were delicious. Please remember to order one of the seasonings they offer as the do not pre season their steaks before cooking unless you select either Montreal steak or Cajun season. It was a little disappointed that they wouldn't accommodate my request to have salt and pepper applied to my steak prior to cooking as that is a pretty standard procedure for most restaurants and home across the world. I had a side of the loaded mashed potatoes and my mother had the sweet potatoes fries. Both were some of the best I've ever had. Would visit again!!!

I been stuck in the storm (like always happen to me), and this caratteristic place has catch my eye. The animal on the wall almost talk to you 😉, the waitress has been very nice and did all the best to make me comfortable, the BISON STEAK has been a pleasant tasty surprise, ( TRIED FOR THE FIRST TIME IN MY LIFE ) and I can't say anything bad about this place. Good way to kill time waiting for the road to reopen!

I got the elk burger w/ pepperjack and all the extras, as well as a beer flight. Thr staff can recommend good beers, I recommend the huckleberry hefeweizen and the saddle bronc brown, myself. The burger was excellent! That's what a real burger should be! Lastly, the ambiance is very relaxing and spacious. Definitely come here! 5/5

Dinner was decent and the menu was large. The food came out quick after ordering. We were hoping to see more reasonably priced steak options, so we both ended getting a dinner entree instead (came with 2 sides).

The service here was excellent and our waitress was very attentive. The food selection was great and it took us time to figure what we wanted. When the food arrived we were surprised at the amount of food that was on the plates. The food was excellent and very filling.

The Busy Bee Cafe is a charming, vintage restaurant with a cozy and welcoming atmosphere. The friendly service adds to the overall experience, making guests feel right at home. The food is described as above average and reasonably priced for its quality. Dishes like the breakfast sandwich, hash browns, hamburgers, fries, Reuben sandwich, grilled chicken salad, biscuits and gravy are highly praised for their delicious flavors and generous portions. Visitors also appreciate the accommodating service and local flair from the staff.
Only 4 minutes from I-90, well worth it for great food, great prices. Breakfast and lunch, 7 to 2 every day, no worries if you order before 2 they won't kick you out. Restroom Inspection: Unbelievably clean. Waitress Shana is fantastic PS: came back 4 days later and stayed in the attached 1908 historic hotel Occidental, $100 rooms and really neat

If you are in Buffalo you should definitely stop by this place for breakfast or lunch. It has the old west vibe and it is right along side the river. I had the Reuben and it was good. I will be back next time I am in town. 6 months latter and still an awesome place for breakfast. The staff is extremely friendly and welcoming.
Dorman Land — Google review
Amazing! Very cool historical/vintage feel to the Cafe. We were made to feel right at home. The food was above average - hashbrowns were just as ordered and perfectly made. The breakfast sandwich was well proportioned and not tough - Service was being trained - so delays were understandable and completely reasonable. The food was underpriced for the quality- Breakfast sandwich, hashbrowns, 2 scrambled eggs, large toast (larger than normal portion/size), and a orange juice total <$13
scott wagg — Google review
The location is iconic and historic but the quality of the food and service doesn’t meet the hype. I had the “Walt Longmire Chicken Fried Steak” sandwich. It seems to just be a frozen patty with a couple of pickles and a squirt of mustard-was not impressed. I, also, found the staff to be inattentive. I had to ask for coffee refills which was in a 6 oz cup and they never came by the refill my wife’s water. The restaurant is only open until 2pm but they stopped serving breakfast at 11am even though there was no indication of that on the website. Overall, a disappointing experience!

The service here was great and the restaurant had a beautiful view of the creek outside. The cinnamon roll was huge with lots of frosting, and the homemade biscuit was also amazing. I would also highly recommend the O’brien potatoes!

What a cute Mom and Pop restaurant! Was recommended this restaurant by Big Horn veterinarian staff caring for my dogs while they were getting their teeth cleaned. Really good food, fast, friendly, courteous staff. Fair pricing on the food. I will definitely come back to eat at this place again.
Melanie Mosley — Google review
On our way through town, we stopped in for brunch. Parked across the street and enjoyed the murals and river/creek as we walked over. We were greeted with a "sit anywhere" and a smile. Our server had coffee on the table and our orders quickly. She refilled us a couple of times as we waited what seemed kind of a long time for an omelette and a burrito. But it was worth the wait, the food was very good! The biscuit tasted freshly made and was buttery, my omelette was made as requested and my husband's burrito was huge and very tasty. Our only critique would be that the server never checked in with us to let us know there was a delay with the food. It wasn't super busy and there were 3 servers on duty with about 8 tables total. But she was very pleasant and our coffees never got cold or empty. We'd definitely stop in again, we know things can happen that slow down service, and the food was worth a few extra minutes.

Quiet, cozy, friendly place. Window view of clear creek, good bar seats. Excellent breakfast. Kind staff. Would go there regularly if I didn't live 3000 kilometers away

When you come in you're greeted with a friendly "sit anywhere" atmosphere that instantly puts you at ease. The service was friendly and very accommodating. Our server taught us local slang and it was a very fun time. The food was seasoned perfectly, to the point that I believe we had the best biscuits and gravy, and the best hash browns we've ever had anywhere, and as a sous chef that's saying a lot. The experience was such a good one that we opted to buy a commemorative mug so that we will always remember our time here. Buffalo Wyoming, Busy Bee Cafe, we will absolutely be coming back.
Alexander Ramirez — Google review
Quaint old time restaurant. Food was fantastic. I personally enjoyed the hamburger and fries. Fresh ground patty that was hot and delicious. I was told that the Ruben was equally as tasty as well as the grilled chicken salad. Friendly service at a reasonable price. Worth the stop in this small mountain town. Plenty to do in the town of Buffalo Wyoming in itself with the historic city and shops

Occidental Saloon is a hidden gem that offers excellent food and fantastic live music. The place is adorned with old photos and fun taxidermy, creating a visually appealing atmosphere. The bison burger and chicken fried steak are highly recommended, while the local beers add to the experience. The casual and relaxing ambiance, along with friendly staff and nightly live music, make it a must-visit spot in northern Wyoming for an authentic taste of the wild west culture.
I really enjoyed this place. Had fun taking to the bar staff, patrons, and lucked in on a bluegrass concert! Definitely recommend it. The food was good too.

What a gem. We stumbled in here for a bite to eat on our way through and had excellent food with fantastic live music, compliments of David Stewart. Too many bad reviews. We enjoyed our time here. Take a look inside the hotel while you wait for your food. Savannah took great attention to us while she waited on many other tables. Bison burger was a hit. The steak tips and wings were also decent. The ten sleep beers were delicious as well. Thanks for a nice meal and a taste of the local flavor

This is the real deal. An authentic saloon operating to this day, but dating to 1880 and the Old West. It is not a re-creation, and, while friendly to out-of-towners, is not tourist oriented but a town watering hole. This place is the real deal. And they serve an excellent bison burger and have a nice selection of local craft beers on tap. If you are passing through Buffalo, WY, do not miss it.

The stars I did give are for the history and atmosphere. It is worth a stop in to look at the location. It appears as though locals get good service here. Food was ok. I would have had another drink but after we received our food we were not even looked at until we were done. My family walked down the street and I sat there for 15mins waiting for the bill (it was not even very busy at the time). Also, a little surprised to see dogs wandering around inside the restaurant (not service dogs). so it is pet friendly. If your looking for dogs to join you for dinner that part may be completely fine... just mentioning it incase you are allergic or prefer eating without animals.

The Virginian Restaurant provides an exceptional dining experience with impeccable service and delicious food. The meal is served in a proper sequence, starting with appetizers, bread, and then the main courses, allowing ample time for conversation between each course. It is recommended to allocate two hours to fully relish this remarkable dining experience. The menu boasts a variety of delectable options; the elk steak is particularly outstanding and has been highly praised.
Probably the best chicken cordon bleu I ever had. Lovely historic decor and friendly service that made sure everything was perfect from start to end.
Adil Yalcin — Google review
Given my experience I will preface with "all restaurants cut corners due to..." The elk bites weren't "bites" but apparently slices of elk. The slices were covered in an unusually sweet broth. I say broth because I expected a sauce. No. They were swimming in a sweet water. I tried to chew through them and I was reminded of when i chewed jerky as my dad showed me how to saw tree limbs. The "dumplings" on the menu were previously frozen and obvious. Show me a handmade dumpling and I will show every restaurant's dumpling bought from a distributor The prime rib was a disaster. Raw center medium middle and well done exterior. The prime rib doesn't deserve an explanation. The restaurant should be embarrassed
Christine Firth — Google review
Excellent service!!! They serve your dinner as it’s supposed to be - bringing appetizers, bread, and entrees in order and allowing good 30 minutes in between, so you can talk. Allow for 2 hours to really enjoy this amazing dinner experience. Food is great, elk steak is to die for!

The Virginian used to be one of my favorite restaurants. I come once a year to vacation in Wyoming all the way from Missouri. I always look forward to eating here. Unfortunately this year I learned that The Virginian was under new management and you can definitely tell. My favorite item on the menu is the truffle Mac N’ Cheese and prime rib. The new menu no longer has the truffle Mac n’ cheese. Instead you get the choice of instant mashed potatoes, baked potato or rice. My prime rib was tough and seemed small. The cheesecake was the only good thing. Oh and who charges for rolls!? My family unfortunately wasted over $240. We will not be back.

We had a reservation for 12 of us and the table was set and we were sat right when we got there. They had a very limited menu of 3 appetizers (one was out), 3 entrees and 3 desserts. They did allow us to order from the bar menu as we had three children with us and that menu had a lot more options. The ones that ordered from that menu had their food about 20 minutes before the rest of us. Four of us got the fettuccine Alfredo which was hot but boring. Four of us got the prime rib which three came out warm ish but one was barely warm with a cold baked potato. They seemed annoyed when asked to heat that plate of food up but it came back out five minutes later warmed. But they never cleared her plate until asked after the desserts had come out. The desserts were good especially the cheesecake with the strawberry sauce. We’ve been to the restaurant before and had great experiences but this time was not good and unless they get their stuff together we won’t be back.
Rachel Shassetz — Google review
Never seen such basically unfriendly service (ladies). At the beginning we thought whether they had „smoked something“. Any politeness we saw so far in the US was absent or at least could be perceived in this way. Later it got a bit better with one of the two, but the second was still and basically unfriendly. One service clerk, serving bread, walked around with a face if he is beaten every minute. Sad for the good food and nice room (not the saloon). But for sure we would / will not go in there again. I can spend my money simply better than there
