The Maltese Cross Cabin is a historic log cabin that was temporarily occupied by President Theodore Roosevelt in the late 1800s. It was built for him after he purchased the Maltese Cross Ranch, also known as the Chimney Butte Ranch, and cost $14,000 including cattle and the cattle brand. The cabin has an interesting history as it was moved to St.
Did you know that Roosevelt considered himself a cowboy? You can see how he lived this lifestyle by visiting his cabin. This cabin is located behind the visitors center and gives you an accurate depiction of how things were back in the olden days as it is fully furnished. It has an interesting history and is totally worth the 5 minutes it would take you to explore it.
Joceline Lopez — Google review
The Maltese Cross Cabin is one of the things you have to see at the park. I is a well done presentation and informative. Visiting can really bring the Roosevelt story to life. I stop every time I am here.
Charles Bennett — Google review
My husband and I love visiting National Parks and historic sites and finally got to see TR’s cabin. It was very neat to see, especially after reading about Sarah Vowell’s description of it in her book “Assassination Vacation”, when she visited the TR National Park and this cabin years ago with her sister and nephew. Everything she’d mentioned about was accurate.
Jessica Lunt — Google review
The Maltese Cross Ranch is a great historical site..Teddy Roosevelt's Cabin is an example of preserved Americana..
Mark Badgett — Google review
So amazing to see one of Teddy's cabin restored to look as the original.
alex monsrud — Google review
The old cabin Theodore Roosevelt lived in while in the area, grieving from the loss of his wife. Most of the items displayed are from that period, but not actually his. The cabin is now right behind the visitor's center, moved from its original place.
Ana Mihaela Lucaci — Google review
It is a wonderful, peaceful place, and a must-see for all fans of TR. The exhibits need a bit of disinfectant at the moment, to rid them of their musty smell, especially with the concern for clean air! Very pretty in early fall with the view of the cottonwoods, buttes and river.
Elizabeth Barber — Google review
This place has a great historical representation. The place is still structurally sound even to this day and being moved from it's original site. This place has the rooms walled of with plexiglass. The furniture that Teddy Roosevelt had used at the time are still there. A must see place when visiting the area.
Bryce Hamblin — Google review
The cabin is right next to the visitors center and while it isn't much on its own (TR was living a Spartan life in ND) it is worth a stop as you explore this park and all its natural beauty. It's cool to see the bits TR carved by hand, such as his cattle brand, the Maltese Cross, which can be found hand carved on the cabin.

The Painted Canyon Visitor Center offers a stunning view of the expansive Badlands, making it an ideal starting point for exploring Theodore Roosevelt National Park. Located in the South Unit, this center provides essential amenities such as souvenir shopping and water refills. Visitors can also explore exhibits to learn more about the park before embarking on their journey. The center is adjacent to the Painted Canyon Overlook, which offers breathtaking views of the striated hills and rolling prairie.
So we decided to come up here today to do the paint canyon loop. It is only .9 miles but it was beautiful. Lots of parking for cars, truck or RVs. Has clean restrooms and the view did not disappoint. If you are just passing through and want to stretch your legs this would be a great stop

We really enjoyed this rest stop & national park visitor center. We arrived last afternoon after stopping in Bismarck to see the capital building & driving The Enchanted Highway with our 5th wheel RV. We rushed to see the Painted Canyon before dark & saw buffalo grazing below in the canyon I had read that overnights were allowed. What a find! We spent the night in the parking lot & woke up to find a small herd of buffaloes, including calves, right behind our RV. It was awesome - I grabbed the camera for a few pics. Then we left & found a great campsite at the Cottonwood Campground for the following 4 nights.

Information was available and gift shop had lots to offer. The grounds and building were under remodeling. The center was quite busy since it also served as a rest area for the interstate. We enjoyed the nature walk and views. I suggest you go counter-clockwise since it is easy to miss a trail marker in the other direction.
Tim Carpenter — Google review
The visitor center is on the outskirts of the Theodore Roosevelt South Point. You can pull off for the restroom or just to get amazing landscape shots of the park. Very accessible for wheelchairs and other mobility limits by having flat sidewalks along the area. Theodore Roosevelt does cost money to enter the actual park which is located near Medora, this does not cost any money to go to. We were able to see Bison near the entrance and also far into the distance. A very beautiful scenic pit stop!
Sarah — Google review
Beautiful majestic park! There are several trails to be hiked. I only wish the trails were pet friendly like other parks, but I understand why their not. The pathways around the visitors center is pet friendly. Please pick up after your pets. Bring an umbrella regardless of the weather as there is little to no shade while on the trails. Also bring plenty of water if hiking.

Stopped in here to get some information before we headed into the park. The two guys working behind the counter or somewhat informative but didn’t seem too eager to help unless approached…. I think it’s important to have “customer service” people when working at a visitor center; a little more outgoing and someone that wants to give out information or suggestions..
Sheri Lucas — Google review
Really nice Rest stop with beautiful views, nice trails to get a stretch and very well maintained by staff! I'm from Tennessee, first came to Teddy Roosevelt National Park in 2007. I was taking pictures of Bison with a wind up disposable camera, the ranger had to nicely come and tell me that the bachelor Bison can become aggressive without notice if I am that close ( close enough to get a decent photo with disposable camera , image) . I bought a couple biographies on Teddy Roosevelt then and really found some encouragement from the man , simple, fierce, tough, fair, loyal, and honest leader. I don't think he would tolerate much of what is in Washington today.
Happy Vagabond — Google review
Definitely worth the stop. Scenic views, a few trails, awesome gift shop! I was fortunate to see a herd move through. I'm not quite sure how unique that is but it sure made my day!
Heather Buck — Google review
If you are visiting Theodore Roosevelt National Park or just driving along the I94, this is somewhere you should stop. While its on the edge of the park, its right up on a hill with the most magnificent views out over the park. From here you can see just how incredible the park is and the diverse landscape. There is a good walk right along the edge, with views over the Painted Canyon and beyond. The visitor center itself is also really good, with an extensive gift shop, a lot of detail about the park and important things like rest rooms and coffee. You also do not need to pay to stop here, that is at the Medora entrance, so you can stop here and use the rest rooms and café even if just passing through. If you are visiting the park, I would recommend making this your first stop.
Andy Smith — Google review
This is such a beautiful park and a beautiful way to begin our 2 week road trip out west. The landscape is stunning and reminds me a lot of Badlands but not nearly as crowded. Keep your eyes peeled for bison, wild horses, and prairie dogs as we seen so many at this stop. Definitely take the time to go further into the park and explore. We planned on going to Theodore Roosevelt but for those who were just driving past, they could easily pull off the highway since this is pretty much a rest stop and take in the views while eating lunch or stretch your legs by going on a little hike.
Malori Thornsburg — Google review
A beautiful area. The visitors center tells a story of land conquered, and soon after, the conquerors learn that they need to care for the lands that they conquered. This place is likely why we have a national Forest and national Park system. Theodore Roosevelt set aside nearly 10% of the US as park/forest due to this place...
Scott Reimers — Google review
I love it here I've been here dozens of times. Everytime I go from east to west through North Dakota. It's so beautiful and there's so many Buffalo and a lot of nice hiking trails. Clean bathroom, a few places to sit also...
Sky Tripp-Schaefer — Google review
Just took a pit stop when we saw the rest room board , stayed here for the night seems safe and great place with views, sometimes car alarms went on like twice else no disturbance too
Vennamaneni Arpitha — Google review
Stopped here to rest overnight. There are signs stating to be aware of wildlife and keep clear of the wild buffalo. Woke to a beautiful sunrise and buffalo grazing in the parking and visitor center area. There are trails available for getting a good break from sitting. Plenty of parking for both large and small vehicles. It was quiet and not very busy on a Thursday night early Friday morning. Lovely views! I did not enter the visitor center as it was closed when I arrived and not yet open when I departed.

The Painted Canyon Visitor Center is a great place to stop if you're traveling along Interstate 94 and want to get a glimpse of Theodore Roosevelt National Park. The center has a small museum with exhibits on the park's history and geology, as well as a bookstore and gift shop. There's also an overlook with stunning views of the Painted Canyon. You cannot purchase ational Park Tickets here. The staff at the visitor center are very knowledgeable and helpful. They can provide you with information on the park's trails, wildlife, and camping options. They can also help you plan your visit to the park. I highly recommend stopping at the Painted Canyon Visitor Center if you're traveling through North Dakota. It's a great way to learn about the park and get inspired to explore it further. Here are some additional details that you may want to include in your review: •The visitor center is located at exit 32 off of Interstate 94. •It is open from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM, daily. •There is no entrance fee to the visitor center. •There are several hiking trails that start from the visitor center, including the Painted Canyon Nature Trail and the South Unit Scenic Loop Drive. The visitor center is a great place to see bison, prairie dogs, and other wildlife.

Always an amazing stop on way through ND. A great place for a short walk or hike. Sometimes you'll get lucky and see some fluffy cows (buffalo). PS Don't pet them!! Take some time to take in the views, breathe in all the fresh air.
Dave Malone — Google review
Unbelievable views at a free rest area. Place to fill water bottles and jugs with clean facilities! Nice store too for postcards and other items. We were lucky enough to see a heard of bison come through the park and down a hiking trail. Unbelievable!!!
Nick Esposito — Google review
This is probably the best visitor center I have visit. The views are enchanted and you want to stay forever! You can’t go wrong with the trail or the view from the top.
Dayana Gomez — Google review
Painted Canyon was a welcome reprieve from the long road trip we were on. Needing to get out and stretch our legs after hours cooped up in the car, we happened on this little paradise in Western North Dakota. The views were spectacular and the interpretive signs only added to the experience. The short hike down into the valley only brought the beauty that much closer to the fore. Definitely stopping again next time we'll be through that area!
Michael Tetrault — Google review
Worth the quick side hike. We ran into a buffalo at mid point of trail and saw a coyote. Not as ‘painted’ as hoped.

Oxbow Overlook, situated at the end of the North Unit's scenic drive in Theodore Roosevelt National Park, offers a breathtaking panoramic view of the landscape. Visitors can use binoculars to spot wildlife and enjoy the sight of steep, colorful canyons stretching across the horizon with the Little Missouri River in the distance. The area is known for bighorn sheep sightings, although their population has been affected by livestock infections.
Make sure to see even better views at Sperati Point or on the Caprock Coulee hike. The North Unit of Theodore Roosevelt has less people and better views than the South. A herd of bison was near the Oxbow Overlook when I was there on 10/4/2021.
James Waldecker — Google review
In the North unit of Theodore Roosevelt National Park this is the end of the road. From here there are a number of really nice hikes. The best one is along the rim, which gives great views back to Oxbow overlook. The only thing to watch out for is bison, who wander freely in this area. We had two come along the path toward us on the way back and had to go wait in the trees for a bit while they passed.
Andy Smith — Google review
This place is amazing. Park staff sure to remind you to stay on trails ++ vigilant about wildlife animals. Bring a coat/sweater. Every patron kept in mind social distancing practices/norms. But a sight to see!!
Patti Tanewasha (MakingItPatti) — Google review
Parked at the overlook and took the 1.2 mile hike out to Sherati Point. Great hike and well rewarded with the view. Amazingly quiet.
David Wagner — Google review
Friends I visited with have an annual pass for National Parks so no cost. Stunning spot at the very end of the road. Has picnic tables, benches and restrooms, we chose to take food there for sunset and did not disappoint. What made it super special was that is that was occupied by bison on our arrival. Much prefer the North rim of the park,

Amazing view of the river and park! A quiet scenic drive to Oxbow Overlook with tons of Buffalo along the way. Highly recommend

The view at the end of that drive was beautiful. Lots of Buffalo (bison) on the way out there!

Nice drive to the end of the road to Oxbow Overlook. We enjoyed seeing all the bison and the vast expanse of the landscape with the Little Missouri River winding through along the way. Vault toilets are available at the parking lot with ample parking.
David Lobree — Google review
Amazing view of the surrounding area and river. There is also a bench and restrooms. This stop is the end of the road unless you are hiking.

The north end of teddy roosevelt is worth the time to visit. Plenty of buffalo and views are wonderful.

A beautiful overlook at the end of a Scenic ride on the North Unit of Theodore Roosevelt National Park. Spectacular views of the Badlands with several hiking trails along the way, many of which offer some amazing views. Be on the lookout for local wildlife such as bison, deer, prairie dogs and more.

The Wind Canyon Trail in Theodore Roosevelt National Park is a short, easy to moderate 0.4-mile hike that leads to a stunning vista point overlooking the picturesque bend of the Little Missouri River. Despite its short length, this trail offers breathtaking views and encounters with wildlife such as bison and wild horses. The trail includes a relatively steep climb towards the end, but the effort is certainly worth it for the panoramic views of the river and surrounding landscape.
If people ask for the best place for sunset in the park, this could be one of the easiest recommend. Hike is easy and neat. The wind canyon itself is one of a kind. The open view of the little Missouri River is breathtaking.
Yang Song — Google review
I arrived just after sunset so I didn't take the full hike but the view was pretty good from where I stopped and took some pictures.
Steven Brenner (Steve) — Google review
A trail does not necessarily need to be miles long in exchange for a stunning view. The short Wind Canyon Trail is an easy hike until the last part that requires a relatively steep climb. You will not regret for the effort when you see the Missouri at a higher vintage point.

My favorite overlook/short trail in the park! The views are stunning. The trail itself is well marked and gains elevation. Great place to see the river flowing through the area
Morghan Townsend — Google review
Very easy walk. You can either walk out and back or loop around. The views of the canyon are phenomenal.
alex monsrud — Google review
One of the best short trails in the U.S. National Park system. The short trail along sandstone cliffs takes you to an excellent vista of a bend in the Little Missouri River. Bison frequent the area and often you have a view of a massive bison herd. The views are especially breathtaking at sunset. There is a little elevation gain on this 0.4 mile loop, but the views are worth it.
Ken and Alicia Lund — Google review
The reward to effort ratio for this hike is amazing. For a fairly quick incline you get this beautiful view of the river. Even on a slightly cloudy day you can get some amazing views and shots. Definitely worth stopping

Nice, short hike. Amazing views of the park at the peak.

Very easy hike with a very rewarding view. Definitely the place to be for sunset 💯💯

The South Unit Visitor Center is the largest and most popular section of Theodore Roosevelt National Park, covering 48,000 acres with a 36-mile scenic loop road. Situated in the charming town of Medora, the visitor center provides comprehensive information about the area's attractions and activities. Visitors can explore a small museum, watch a film about the park in the movie theater, and even see Theodore Roosevelt's original cabin.
This is a great first stop if you are coming into the park. They have a wonderful video and are very helpful and can answer all your questions about the park. There is also a wonderful gift shop area.
Donna Smith — Google review
This is one of the hidden gems of the US National Parks system. We highly recommend you go here for a visit. There are wild horses, bison, incredible rock formations, and hiking trails!
Owen Schwaegerle — Google review
Very educational and the bathrooms were clean and modern. The cabin was quick to walk through and look at all of the items.
Jess Renderos — Google review
Theodore Roosevelt was a must stop for us on our drive through North Dakota. Our original plan was only to come to the south unit, but at the Painted Canyon visitors center they told us that the north unit had more impressive views, so we went there first. We still came to the south unit though. There's a $30 entrance fee. The entrance is right off the highway. There's a 36 mile scenic drive that we did part of. Unfortunately, the end of the loop was closed, so if you did the whole thing that was open, you would have to turn around and drive back. There are a lot of overlooks to stop at along the way. We ended up only doing a very small portion of the drive. We got to see several prairie dog towns which were awesome and you couldn't see at the north unit. The views were pretty, but just not nearly as good as they were at the north unit. I think it's still worth stopping by, but definitely make time for the north unit too.
Jacqueline Telljohann — Google review
The rangers here are friendly and answered all of our questions. The museum is small but worth visiting. They have a movie theatre where you can watch a film about the park. You can also visit Theodore Roosevelt’s actual cabin here as well.
Joceline Lopez — Google review
Really pleasant experience. April was a good time to visit, not many other people in the park but there were lots of critters that showed up. It was windy and cold so I didn't hike much but the hiking would be great.
Christine Angelo — Google review
Take advantage of the hikes long or short, you'll discover more treasures! This will enhance your experience!
Michelle Marie Paul — Google review
The Teddy Roosevelt talk was entertaining and interesting. Park is beautiful.
Jim Nowlen — Google review
The scenic drive was nice but I liked the north unit better. I saw a couple Buffalo and some prairie dogs. The north unit was less crowded. The town at the entrance was a madhouse.
