Miharu Takizakura

Mentioned on
Historical landmark
Sights & Landmarks
The Miharu Takizakura is a famous cherry tree in Japan that has been standing for over 1,000 years. This iconic sakura blooms from mid to late April and was declared one of Japan's three great cherry trees in 1922. The tree is located in the Miharu community and has been protected and preserved throughout the years. It continues to stand tall today, offering a breathtaking sight for anyone who sees it.
The most amazing cherry blossom tree I have ever seen in my entire life!!! The tree is HUGE and it is over a thousand years old. It is 100% worth staying until after sunset to enjoy it also during the night since it is illuminated. The entire area around the tree itself is also really enjoyable with plenty of other beautiful flowers to view and many food options. I went there on the 15th of April 2024 and the flowers had just started to wither away, but it was still beautiful. A 500¥ fee is charged from entering the area.

No doubt on why this place has become no.1 sakura spot in Fukushima prefecture. Lot people, lot of vehicles and rush during the peak season. Entrance ticket is ¥500. From some car parks, there was a shuttle bus service, difficult to find nearby car parks. Lovely place, unique beauty. Worth seeing historical Takizakura tree. Few snack shops around, can try several snacks such as ice cream, takoyaki, curry bun etc.

It was exceptional, very very exceptional place to visit!! Even it was in late blooming already when we visited, we still very much impressed of her ☺️☺️☺️ I wish to go back again.

Stunning tree, a must see!

It's worth a 15 min detour trip which costs 300 yen per person. The ambience is nice with spring in full bloom. The place is the site of a big and old sakura tree surrounded by eateries and you can buy sakura plants from here as well.
Divya D.A.K — Google review
Amazing sakura, one of the three oldest and probably the most beautiful of those three. So of course, it's... utterly popular and surrounded by the crowds. Beautiful sight though, but minus one star for the amount of people, that kills a big part of its magic.
Jordy Meow (Japon Secret) — Google review
Amazing! This 1,000 year old sakura, which is declared one of Japan’s 3 great cherry trees in 1922, still stands big and tall as of today. It’s such a moving and awestruck experience when you see this tree before your eye. Many thanks to Miharu community and those who have supported to protect and preserve this amazing cherry tree! I wish this sakura another thousand years to come.

Beautiful place. Feeling grateful for the takizakura to warming our hearts for 1000 years

What a magnificent Historical place to visit! OBVIOUSLY you'll want to time it right to see this extraordinary tree in full bloom. We were a bit off but we at least got some blossoms! It's beautiful during day but can be quite crowded (go early!). At night when crowds disappear, it's a lot more tranquil and peaceful to soak in all in! It is a bit difficult to manage the hills in a wheelchair but at least the paths are paved. You'll need to be fairly strong/independent to push up hills or you'll need an assistant. Prepare for a workout to navigate the entire site. If you do manage to go up the hill behind tree you have to go back same way for there are a lot of stairs to go full circle. The market area has a great variety of vendors for food, souvenirs and drink. Lot's of varieties of great Sake (not to expensive either!) with free samples to taste.
watashi wa Steve desu (TokyoGaijin) — Google review
We missed the full bloom by a week but still a blessing to be here to see the oldest cherry tree. There is a cafe and a few souvenirs shop. Toilets are clean.

Mount Adatara

Nature & Parks
Mountains
Mount Adatara is a stratovolcano peak located in a range with hot springs, hiking trails, and a summit crater. The summit offers impressive views but caution must be exercised due to the windy conditions. It is an ideal location for beginner hikers as it is relatively easy to hike and offers picturesque autumn leaf views during October. A visit in May presents a wintry experience with otherworldly views. Nature enthusiasts will also appreciate the mossy environment of the mountain peak.
This mountain can be done fairly easily if you use ropeway to the middle of the hiking route which will shorten the route by 1.5h one way. If not then add 1.5h one way to climb up. There is a discount coupon on the official website. From the ropeway station, it takes another 1.5h or less to the summit. You can also go along the ridge to try different hiking route too. Lots of bugs and green so highly recommend to wear long sleeve’s especially in the summer. Parking is free.
Sayaka S — Google review
At first I was worried since it’s my first time hiking but it was really easy! Like walking 1 and a half hours in the park. But the view was impressive! Perfect for beginner I guess. Might be interesting place for those who love moss.

Awesome hike to the peak. Ropeway also available

Amazing views! Especially if once you reach the top you carry onto the volcano 5 minutes down the path. It's a bit of a hike to get to the summit, but if you rest and take water and food you'll be fine.

On Sep 28,2019 I had a chance to hike Mt. Adatara. Here is my notes for those who are planning to hike. Adatara Kogen Ski resort is the easiest trailhead. You can come here by your car or use public bus. There is free parking area. The trailhead is very well maintained. It has shops, restaurants, public hot spring etc. bathrooms are good. There are vending machines as well if you need some drinks before the hike. The cable car stars at 8:30. I took the cable car one way (1000 yen) since I planned to come down from another trail. It takes 10 min to get 1350 m altitude. From this point it is just an easy hike. The path starts right in front of the ropeway exit. It is a well maintained path but a bit narrow for most of the time. It was very crowded since it is autumn colors-season (koyou). There are lots of resting area but no water supply. Luckily it was such a clear and nice day. The scenery was spectacular. As you go up the height of the plants get smaller and you will see mountains lined up perfectly. The autumn colors were fantastic I believe it will get better in October. The suggested time was 90 min but it took us 55 min to get the summit. Altitude is 1700 m here. Once you get the peak you will see a path goes to the other peaks. We visited them as well. It takes 15-20 min each. You will see bleached rocks because of the volcanic action in the past. On the way coming back we decided to challenge ourselves with a different path. Suggested time was 120 min but it took use 105 min. After the peak of Adatara just keep walking to the right where you will see the path clearly. You can go all the way to the Kurogane Goya Hut but we decided to turn from the second peak. After about 15 min the route goes towards left and split into two. We got confused but thanks to the people there we figured it out that both end up with where we started. We followed the right path. After about 45 min walk through slippery and narrow path we came across with the connection point with the other path. From this point the path is very easy. You are like walking in a village. It is called “bashamichi” - horse road. However this part is a bit long so we decided to take the shortcuts. You will see the sigs of the short cuts which goes through bushes and trees. Both paths cross each other several times. At a point you will see a wooden bridge over a creek. It means you are almost there. The horse road just goes straight but on the left you will see a path that goes along with the creek. We decided to take this one as it looks more fun. It was indeed. The nature gets amazing if there is water. After 10 min walk we found the waterfalls. It was spectacular. We were happy with our choice. After a short walk we reached the cable car where we started. There is a public hot spring welcoming you. It was a great hike with lots of discoveries.

Nihonmatsu Castle Ruins

Castle
Sights & Landmarks
Nihonmatsu Castle Ruins is a picturesque park famous for its spring cherry blossoms and an enchanting chrysanthemum festival in the fall. The ruins of a 14th-century castle are also present here, albeit some distance away from the main entrance. Although not a complete castle, Nihonmatsu Castle Ruins continues to attract visitors with its stunning natural beauty and rich history that dates back several centuries.
I was not expecting much but this place was breathtaking in Autumn. They also had a flower festival on and fresh food/market strip with shoyaki taiyaki and more. English signage is available for all the notable ruins etc.
Maxim Allen — Google review
Not a good place to visit if you are not driving. I drove all the way up to the public parking which was a rather small patch and the roads going up was narrow as well. There wasn’t any castle structures left and some of the pics displayed here referred to another castle park nearby. Good views even when it was a rainy day when I visited.
Alan Yeo — Google review
We only saw the ruin, no castle-like building
Yohana Kho — Google review
Beautiful chrysanthemum festival in the fall. But it's not a full castle. The ruins are a bit away from the front entrance.

When I got off the ropeway, it was thrilling and scary at first... However, it was a very enjoyable and relaxing trip where you could see the autumn leaves and the view was great! Visitors can also partake in the Team Orange drifting school, where they receive comprehensive training and guidance in English.
I finally made my childhood dream come true with making the 7hr journey to see summer matsuri and it was everything I imagined. Hopefully I can come back and actually drive instead of spectate. If possible make sure you have a vehicle to get around since some tracks have a high grade and is a pain getting from track to track.
