Okavango Delta

Mentioned on
Wetland
The Okavango Delta is a vast river delta in Botswana, featuring the Moremi Game Reserve which boasts abundant wildlife such as hippos, lions, and elephants. Maun serves as the gateway to this unique wetland ecosystem. The delta is described as large and swampy, with a distinctive inland character. It offers visitors an opportunity for ecotourism activities such as mokoro safaris - a popular way of exploring the area's waterways.

Beautiful place to visit and find peace in nature. I enjoyed my visit contemplating the sunset.

The camping trip in Okavango Delta turned out to be more interesting than expected. The boat ride out to the camp site was the highlight of the trip as the local guides skillfully maneuvered the dugout canoes across the wetland. And then there was the bush walking to see the different animals in the delta. Totally enjoyed the local songs and dances performed by the local guides during the campfire.

To see the actual and honest representation of flora and fauna of a great continent. Helps me to know what’s going on there. And where help is needed and where I can send money to help the helpless.

Amazing experience! Simply out of this world! Beautiful faune, quiet and peaceful river cruising with lots of crocodiles, birds, and if you are lucky, hippos, elephants, impalas and pumbas...A once in a lifetime experience particularly if you can do bush camping on the river bank. Incredible experience!

The Okavango Delta is renowned for its incredible wildlife, with some of the most sought-after species, including elephants, lions, leopards, buffalos, giraffes, hippos, crocodiles, and many species of antelope. The delta is also a birdwatcher's paradise, with over 450 species recorded in the area.

The service at Qorokwe camp was out of this world. The place is so peaceful, breathtaking and so relaxing..the staff is so friendly and willing to make your stay memorable. We asked for picnic under the stars and we got just that...it was beautiful 😍 the game drives, the food ...the infinity pool ..we swam while watching elephants and other animals from a distance. Definitely a place to check out...Worth evert penny!

One of the miracles of nature - a bucket list destination. The Kgalagadi desert turns into a lush green wetland here in the largest inland delta in the world. It's the story of four geological faults - two of them, the panhandle faults, channel the Okavango river where it builds up against the Gomare fault following the seasonal rains in the Angolan highlights. For six months of the year the river breaks the fault and islands, floodplains, logoons and channels build up over some 100km because of a fourth fault line, the Kunyere fault. The Okavango Delta is one of the best preserved wild life areas in the world home to lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo, cheetah, the African wild dog, giraffe and countless species of antelope, small predators, birds reptiles and insects - not forgetting crocodile and hippopotamus. Enjoy viewing game right on the water from a Mocoro, traditionally a canoe made from a single tree trunk and now a more eco-friendly version made from fibreglass poled over the shallow flood plains. Stay over at one of the lodges in the area I recommend Jumbo Junction, a comfortable smaller one, run by couple Sue and Greg, at the north-western edge of the Delta close to Gunotsonga.

Moremi Game Reserve

Nature preserve
National park
The Moremi Game Reserve is a vast wildlife sanctuary spanning 1,900 square miles located on a river delta in Botswana. It is home to an impressive array of animals including cheetahs, rhinos, elephants and lions. The southern section of the reserve offers the best opportunities to catch a glimpse of these majestic creatures. The park is unfenced and offers prime nature viewing opportunities for those willing to brave its challenging road conditions with thick sand and water making access limited.
Wonderful staff. Great accomodations. Knowledgeable guides. Amazing sights.

When we visited Moremi it was early in the morning for a self game drive. We saw a few animals: elephant, hyena, impala, zebra, hippos and some smaller species too.

Awesome elephant encounters. Very large herds and very intimidating.

We made selfdrive day trip from Maun. There is alot of animals allready on transit road on a way to southgate. We had Suzuki Jimny and managed mediocre. Roads are pretty hard especially for rookies. One time we got stuck on mudhole but at the same minute awesome dutch/german couple saved us from the hole with their bigger vechile! Thank you so much!🤩 We saw lost of elephants, hippos, crocodile, antilopes, girraffes, cape buffalos etc. Be aware or mud holes and if you are not sure look always route around them. Also it is best to stay in the reserve since we spent half day on transit roads. We will come back later with better car, time and prepare :)

Lulama Mqilingwa — Google review
Poorly informed staff. No working toilets or running water at gates. Very few animals seen. Roads mostly flooded and staff had no problem directing people into flooded roads that we warned them about. Very difficult to navigate with limited roads and signs. Staff at gates couldt communicate with other camps since the power was down and even the solar didnt charge. We did not reach our camp within two days and had to overnight next to the roads because the roads were so poor and flooded. No one came looking for us. Real threat if poachers start roaming the park since no one monitors you.

All my trips to Moremi Game reserve were taken in the wet season...lots of mud...and of course lots of beautiful sights...the other time I enjoyed a pair of lions being scattered by a young elephant bull....amazing...Moremi is beautiful...
Thophi Tops — Google review
One of Africa's finest reserves. Unfenced, untamed, nature at its best. Limited access due to the challenging road conditions, thick sand and water, makes for a rewarding experience. Botswana has implemented a low volume high price model on Tourism, but in today's world I guess that's the price you need to pay in order to break away from the crowds and have an experience of a lifetime.
Neil Jansson — Google review
In the hands of a good guide, an experience that will remain a highlight of my life
Peter Damian Levy — Google review
The best reserve I've ever seen. There are animals literally everywhere, around every corner there's always something special that will leave you in awe. The roads are not well-maintained, they're sandy, but they definitely add to the adventure. Be cautious of the numerous elephants you'll encounter; they can be dangerous during your safaris.
Mattia Borromeo — Google review
Wildest safari we've been so far. Expect nothing but wild life (no wi fi, facilities, shops, even directions, no roads), with a difficult access (only by 4x4 and difficult road to access (2h from Maun)) but also true life and pureness. Exciting and exceptional place 100% recommended. We did a selfdrive safari so maybe that's why we couldn't spot lions nor leopards but we could enjoy plenty of other animals. Be aware that Department of Wildlife and Nature Parks in Botswana are increasing their fees so it is very expensive, we paid them at their office in Maun but we saw people paying them there at the gate. Furthermore, we were not given a map (it costed 300 Pulas!!!!, or more, depending on who is at the reception gate) and there aren't indications in the park (or they were damaged) so it is really easy to get lost. 5 stars because the place is really worth it but it need some maintenance taking into account the price that's paid.

One of the best true African Wilderness areas! Great for safari. We love exploring Moremi. Wildlife sightings are usually quality sightings with limited vehicles. We would recommend staying at least 3 nights exploring the Xakanaxa, 3rd Bridge as well as Xini Lagoon areas!!

I really enjoyed every single moment at the camp. The staff was very friendly and ever smiling. Food was awesome. I loved the way the presented the evening menu, mostly the wines. Big up. On the game drive, I was guided by Wise. The man has vast experience and knowledge about the wildlife. The man really made me love adventure more. The rooms wow. I enjoyed the morning birds songs. I have travelled on most on the camps but Camp Moremi I salute it. I can't to go back there again, and this time around for many more days.

The lodge offers a refined experience for guests who want to explore the African wilderness while enjoying luxurious amenities. With its polished facilities, Jao Camp is an ideal destination for those seeking comfort and adventure in equal measure.
The camp itself is absolutely stunning. Beautiful rooms with attention to detail. The staff were friendly and always happy to chat to us and assist with anything you need. Our guide, Rams, was super knowledgeable and has a genuine love for the reserve. 10/10 would recommend a stay here!
Nina Mancha — Google review
Jao was a bit of a disappointment. We visited during November 2022 and were excited to experience the camp due to the unique architecture and reviews we had seen. The camp was definitely unique and interesting in terms of architecture and layout, but the rooms were not well kept and the safari vehicle was in very bad shape. Staff were friendly but we often had to make requests 3-4 times before achieving the desired result (e.g. requesting certain refreshments for the minifridge, obtaining bug spray and sunscreen, asking for the plunge pool to be skimmed). The food was good overall. We saw a variety of wildlife on game drives but, in contrast to other safari camps we've stayed at, our guide often told us we could not go off road which mean that we were viewing wildlife from a distance. For us, the cost of the camp was not in line with the overall quality of the experience. Nothing was "bad" but it wasn't the high end experience we have had at similarly priced safari camps in Botswana and South Africa.

Jao was amazing. Visited there in 2016 and it was 5 star all the way. Food, wine, service were all amazing. Our guide TJ was awesome. David set us up a dinner out in the delta and it was spectacular. Listening to lions roar a few hundred yards away while having a candle lite dinner was something my kids will never forget. Simply amazing.

Marc's Eatery is a delightful restaurant located in Maun, just a short distance from the city center. Highly recommended by the hotel, this establishment offers a delectable dining experience in a charming garden setting off the main road. The proprietor, Marc, personally ensures that all guests are well taken care of and provides excellent service. The menu boasts an enticing selection of specials, ensuring that there is something for everyone's taste.
A nice restaurant in Maun, about a 5 min ride from the centre. It was recommended by our hotel, and we’re glad we followed their recommendation as it was a good meal, in a lovely garden location just off the main road. Marc (the proprietor) came over for a chat and to check all was well, the service in general was really good. The food was good quality and value, no there was an interesting choice of specials to choose from. Definitely worth checking out if you’re in Maun - we’d go there again over some other places we tried.

What a beautiful place. Nestled in a charming garden, away from the noise of the main road, you get not only great smiles and efficient friendly service, but such tasty food. Beet juice is so yummy! The ginger drink is delicious; they are not cheap on the ginger amount 😋 and I enjoy their cappuccino. We tried the beef, the goulash, the duck tagine, the tagliatelle and the eggplant lasagna. All were tasty, perfectly made. We have returned and will do again, just to get ourselves a treat. Marc is great and very present, which is always a bonus.

Nice atmosphere and everything looked clean. Service was very friendly and helpful, and the food was the best we've had in Maun. Also had tasty craft beer. We had one called King Fisher. Very nice! And the bill wasn't bad either. Right on the main road but set back far enough to be undisturbed. Five stars.

I have been coming to this gem of a restaurant with my safari groups for a few years, the team and the chef always delivers a memorable experience. The location is beautifully decorated, especially lovely at dinner, when the garden is gently lit and you can sit by the fire between courses or after your meal. The open kitchen invites you into the cooking process of the young team of African chefs directed my Marc, who is always in the house. Service is prompt and friendly, the selection of wines is carefully thought of and nicely paired with the food on offer. The menu is a very unique blend of African and modern food, my safari guests and myself count among favorites the game stews cooked in wine with sides of pap or sweet potato, prepared to match the western palates but still paying respect to the original. Marc, the owner and head chef, is himself a joy to meet, he has an interesting personal story and is always sourcing the best, most delicious local ingredients and builds inventive dishes around them: from home grown vegetables, which are so hard to find in this nook of Botswana, to Okavango grass-fed beef that literally melted in our mouths. I always call on the day to book our tables and ask for the day specials, because they tend to sell out immediately, they are this good!

Cafe
Motsana Centre & The Arts Cafe is a charming establishment, ideal for enjoying a meal or a cup of coffee. It stands out as one of the top destinations for an exceptional breakfast featuring delicious bread. The unique architecture complements the presence of small artisan shops, showcasing the rich craftsmanship available. It serves as proof that Maun offers more than just an airport or a starting point for exploring the Okavango Delta. Additionally, this venue boasts a spacious area suitable for hosting events and exhibitions.
This is probably my favorite coffee shop in Maun. The coffee is delicious, food and cakes are amazing as well, but the decoration and the feeling of community that comes together with it is my favorite part about it. They host different events each month, such as local markets or carnival festivals, and they also offer a variety of activities (dance, yoga, Pilates, hiit workouts, etc.). I discovered it in my trip to Maun last year and I think this year after the pandemic is even better if possible.

We ordered the Ginger drink that came without straws. When we asked for straws we were given metal straws that hadn't been cleaned out in i don't know how long. Of course we didn't examine the straws closely. On the 3rd sip, i got a mouthful of green sludge. I was almost sick on the spot. I'm not one to make a fuss, but the staff didn't give a damn. Staff is very nice, tents are very comfy and the view is great. Food isn't bad either, but perhaps a bit pricey. The kitchen is not much of a self catering kitchen, but more like a self supplying kitchen and cooking was therefore not easy to do. Having had good reviews about this place, my wife and l decided to take a family which had visited us. We got into a not busy evening and got ourselves a free table. The "only" lady waiter for the night apparently came in after 5 minutes, well we got the menus and told her to come back after exactly 5 min, which actually took 9.5 minutes, we ordered drinks, starters, and main at the same time. to our surprise we sat for more than an hour waiting for a single starter, after which we went to the kitchen to inquire and were told its coming, the starter came after 8 more minutes and no fame apology from the waiter. we asked for the mains which arrived immediately, and to our surprise, the table was still as wooden as we found it "nothing was set for the mains" when the orders came and dropped on the table mixed and not placed in front of each of us as ordered, we had to wait for the waiter to come back and explain which dish was for who, anyway we dug into the food. knowing l have serious stomach ulcers, l specifically told the waiter to make my curry not mild, and she emphasized their, mild was actually close to nothing, surprisingly when we tested the curries they were EXTRA HOT, we called the waiter and she agreed that was not mild, she then returned both and after a while came with the correct order, and trust me that was the last time we saw the waiter checking on us until when we asked for the bill after another hour which came over a while after she cleared the table. Not even the chef or supervisor of the manager came to us to apologize on this messy evening. l would NOT RECOMMEND THIS PLACE if you have visitors to show them Maun. Food is good but service entirely horrible

Such good food here with so many choices and flavours. We all had different dishes and shared so we could taste all of the food which was great. Good service too. Tanks Team
