Mount Amos is a stunning mountain peak in Freycinet National Park that offers rugged hiking routes and sweeping views. It's possible to walk up the Hazards Mountains saddle walk or climb Mount Amos for a view with some serious height advantage.
Absolutely gorgeous views and a must-do if you're in the area. The hike does involve boulder scrambling and steep slopes. I would recommend good shoes and plenty of water.
L — Google review
If you don’t have walking shoes / good grip footwear, stick to the shorter viewing platform. Lots of smooth rock that needs to be avoided. When it says scrambling it really means just that. Red rock areas have more grip. You need to be fit and not for the faint-hearted. Great views though.
Mike Hall — Google review
Really good, somewhat challenging hike that ends with stunning views. Would highly suggest good hiking shoes, runners maybe suitable on a dry day, however make sure they have a strong grip pattern. Gloves will help with the walk back down.
Brennan Ivanov — Google review
Best hike I’ve been on in ages, but not one for the inexperienced. Grippy footwear and a small amount of clambering experience is a must. All a very achievable ascent, but I wouldn’t recommend this to those not enthusiastic about maintaining three points of contact. A clear, dry day is best to get the most out of the views, but I think even a light shower would turn this climb into a much more dangerous task. Getting to the top is phenomenal, and even the vistas on the ascent are amazing. I’ll be back again
Baron Madschnapps — Google review
What an incredible scramble up to the top of this very sacred and stunning place. The pink granite is beautiful, the scramble challenging and playful, and the views (!!) incredible. Not for the faint hearted and would be treacherous in the wet or without a sticky rubber soled shoe - but if you tick those boxes a cracking hike! Took us 2.5 hours (I work in the outdoors and would consider myself very fit). Sign says - allows 3-5 hours think that’s correct.
Alice Kimberley — Google review
The signs saying you need to be fit are not lying!!! Absolutely worth it when you make it to the top. Absolutely no way at all you should attempt this in the wet. There are very steep rock climbs with nothing much at all to stop you if you slip. Not for the faint hearted.
Jeremy Iles — Google review
Best hike ever. Lots of fun with the scrambling. Gorgeous views. Definitely do NOT attempt in the rain.
Charlotte Cockburn — Google review
One of the tough trails although just 4km to and fro, elevation 395m (rated as 'difficult' walk). Quite a lot of rocks scrambling. In additions to good grip shoes, advisable to wear glove if you are using all four limbs like me (I had to use my butt during descend lol, some rock surface can be slippery even when it's dry), definitely a place to avoid when it's wet. Nevertheless , the reward is absolutely amazing, breathtaking view makes it all worthwhile. It has both the wineglass bay and colesbay lookout, the beauty of freycinet's panaromic / scenic viewpoints 😊
WS Chan — Google review
Gruelling but worthwhile hike to get up to the top. Would definitely recommend shoes with some grip, but I did manage to get up using my Nikes. The view up top was amazing. Took me under two hours return going solo.
Ashan Bandara — Google review
Absolutely worth the effort!! - 2-3hrs return (depending on fitness), total 4km with about 400m elevation gain - Ample parking available (went during PH) - Grippy/hiking shoes recommended for comfort, but not absolutely necessary if it has been dry. Do not try this hike when wet. - Seen plenty of young kids (~8-10yrs) do it happily and easily. A few young families here and there. - Not recommended for folks with bad knees as a lot of big steps/scrambling - Don’t wear your favorite yoga pants as you’ll probably rip it on the way down It’s not as hard as everyone says it to be! Just take your time; there’s plenty of places to catch your breath and enjoy the view :)
Calvin Yeo — Google review
My suggestions: Don’t walk in wet weather Avoid white rock & stick to red as it has more grip Doesn’t need any hiking shoes as many people mentioning(did in Nike running shoes) Go earlier rather than mid day (in summer months) as track won’t be as busy All in all, great hike/climb, a lot of rocks and basically you need to be coordinated/fit/well balanced for that.
Gediminas Krusa — Google review
If you are just a casual hiker, I would describe this hike as "difficult," if you are experienced and recently came from Mt Anne, it's actually quite short and moderate. The day we went to Mt Amos, a Park Ranger stopped us and warned us about the walk; the Ranger advised the trail would be slippery "like glass." Of course, having a thirst for adventuring, we decided to give it a try anyway. The walk is about 6 - 7km return with quite a hefty Elevation. Even if you are an experienced hiker, you'll be on all fours for sections of this trail. We hiked the day after a lot of rain, and when the slope is wet, the traction around the lower to mid section is quite poor. The next section mid-way toward the top of the summit is a bit of a rock scramble that may require you to have three points of contact in the rock crevasses due to the steepness. Despite having a bit of a cardiovascular workout as you navigate the slope up, turn around and you are rewarded with absolutely breath-taking views of the bay behind you. When you get to the top, you are rewarded with possibly the most amazing views Freycinet has to offer. The main walking track that leads to the popular tourist lookout is about 200m Elevation BELOW you. This is the moment you realise that your efforts having given you an experience most casual walkers just won't ever understand. The walk down is more like a "slide" in sections. Be prepared for this by wearing hiking pants that are hard-wearing or exercise pants you don't care about. I'd recommend steering clear of trail runners and wearing hiking shoes for this one. The surfaces are very rocky and you'll feel like your trail runners are ice skates.
The Local Guide — Google review
An exhilarating challenge for adventurers! This mountain hike offers stunning vistas and a thrilling ascent. Be prepared for steep inclines, rocky terrain, slippery slopes, and unpredictable weather. The sense of accomplishment at the summit is unmatched, with panoramic views rewarding every step of the journey. Best place to view the entire Wineglass Bay.
Chayan Jain — Google review
One of the most challenging hikes I have done, but the end result is so worth it - just look at that view!

The area offers a range of walking tracks suitable for different abilities, from leisurely strolls to multi-day treks along the peninsula. Nearby Coles Bay provides amenities for visitors preparing for their outdoor adventures.
A nice walking track. It did remind me how important to keep active and fit. Nice view through the 90 mins walk.

One of the most iconic beauty spots in all of Australia, it's everything the photos promise. The walk from the carpark to the lookout is well formed and easy for anyone with even a basic fitness, it's definitely worth pushing yourself and walking down to the beach, even on a busy day, it's relatively quiet on the beach. Get to the carpark early and you'll miss the crowds.
Dean Hobson — Google review
Absolutely gorgeous!!! I loved the view!! my friend and I went to the short walks, which took us about 40 mins to go to the top and go back down. we got there a lit late around 3pm, next time will go there earlier so we can try the day walks. We drove from Hobart to Wineglass bay, there are many beautiful spots along the way, would be good to stay a few nights to get to see more sceneries.
Ping Z — Google review
It's quite a hike but well worth it. The view is stunning and if you go on the longer hike down to the beach you could spend time on one of Tasmanias most pristine beaches. Take some water with on this hike as it is mostly up hill.
Johan Scheepers — Google review
magnificent view the hiking trail is also relatively easy and basically suitable for people of all ages
Gavin Tse — Google review
One of the best places to visit in Tasmania, the scenery is stunning and the track up to the look out is well formed and relatively easy to the 1,000 steps to the magnificent beach is challenging but worth the effort
Berns Moloney — Google review
Stunning place. The water colours are amazing. You could easily believe you're in the Tropics, if it's a bright ,sunny day.
Don Finlay — Google review
Amazing lookout. The hike took about 45mins. Can be difficult in the rain.
Charith Witharanage — Google review
Great view of the mountains. Cute little beach. The facts about the ants are cool but we didn't see any in may.
B Adams (Adams family) — Google review
Just stunning! I didn’t have time to do the walk to the lookout but got some incredible views from the Cape Tourville lighthouse which is an incredible stop if you’re short of time (the walk to the lookout is about an hour to 90 minute round trip) or less mobile as it’s a flat track/boardwalk around the lighthouse. An area of outstanding beauty and well worth the stop
Bhavesh Trivedi — Google review
Beautiful hike around the wineglass bay. Some amazing views of the beach down below. Tend to get very windy on the walkways.
Hansaniee Kora — Google review
Beautiful as expected and seen in the pictures. The track to the lookout takes around 20-30 min, easy to follow and accessible. The beach of Wineglass is totally worth visiting and spend a bit time there just chill and relax. Takes another 30 minutes one way for the 1000 stairs but it’s worth it
Chloe Wu — Google review
Parking could be a bit rough but definitely worth visiting to see this amazing view! Lots of tracks you can walk but I just took the 1,5 return walk to see the view. You can also extend your walk at the lookout to go to the beach, it will add another 1,5 hour.
Daniel Berkhof (DaanLex) — Google review
You do have to pay to get into the park, just a heads up. The walk down the stairs is a good workout, but worth doing as it takes you right onto the beach. We saw a mother wallaby in the parking lot, very sweet treat for our new travellers.
Paige Hutchinson — Google review
Freycinet National Park is spectacular. The walk down to Wineglass Bay is challenging with the 1000 steps but absolutely worth the effort. NO GUTS, NO GLORY!!! Swim in the refreshing blue water will invigorate for the walk out.

A beautiful hike with giant rocks on the way, fresh air and amazing views.

4Cape Tourville Lighthouse and Lookout

Cape Tourville Lighthouse and Lookout is a must-visit spot for breathtaking coastal views in Freycinet National Park. Accessible via a sealed road, it offers dramatic vistas of the rugged coastline and Thouin Bay. The lighthouse, built in 1971, replaced the inaccessible Cape Forestier Lighthouse. Visitors can enjoy an easy walk on a boardwalk to Sleepy Bay and take in the impressive kelp-covered rocks.
This is a nice short coastal walk. When you walk to the lighthouse, please be careful of the stairs, which are a bit steep. Very scenic walk
Kathy W — Google review
Was hoping to get close to the lighthouse but the trail around it just leads back to the car park. There was a track as we arrived but tge gates were shut. Only managed a quick walk around the track, great views. Good wheelchair access. Drive up was gravel road beware of huge pot holes. Visit is free. Spots for approx 20 cars. No toilets.
Szerenke Zanca — Google review
The drive to Cape Tourville was a bit of an adventure, winding throughFreycinet National Park on a dusty, unsealed road. But let me tell you, the moment I stepped out of the car and saw the view, it was all worth it. The walk to the lookout was easy, a well-maintained path that even my out-of-shape self could manage. And then, bam! There it was – the vastness of the Tasman Sea, framed by the dramatic peaks of The Hazards. The air was crisp and clean, carrying the salty scent of the ocean and the distant calls of seabirds. The lighthouse itself was pretty cool, a squat white tower standing sentinel on the edge of the cliffs. It wasn't the most impressive lighthouse I've ever seen, but it fit perfectly with the rugged beauty of the landscape. But the real star of the show was the view. I spent ages just standing there, mesmerized by the ever-changing colors of the water and the clouds scudding across the sky. I even spotted a pod of dolphins playing in the distance, which was a real treat. If you're looking for a quick and easy way to experience the stunning scenery of Freycinet National Park, the Cape Tourville Lighthouse and Lookout is a must-do. It's perfect for families, couples, or anyone who appreciates a good dose of natural beauty. Just be sure to wear comfortable shoes and bring a camera – you won't want to miss capturing this view!
Thanh Hảo Lê — Google review
It’s a beautiful place but didn’t got the chance to get into the light house and see the view from the top, but overall it’s a nice and peaceful place. Very close to car park and wasn’t busy at all. If you are in that area, it’s a quick place to visit.
Akash Saha — Google review
Recommended for family with young kids. It's better to visit Cape Tourville than Wineglass Bay walk, if you have kids smaller than 10 years old. Breathtaking views, chances to see dolphins and good facilities.
Angelina Tjandra — Google review
Currently works for upgrades are going on, but everything is still accessible. Excellent short wall around the light house (about 20 mins or so) amazing views and photo opportunities 🙏
Danny Stephenson — Google review
What a view! Must visit location in the Freycinet National Park. It’s only a 600m round trip to see it all but the views from up that hill are the best in the area. The pathways are beautifully laid out, an overall great place to be. Can get very windy if a storm is in the area, so hold on to your cameras, hats and other belongings while up there.
Daniel R. — Google review
Hidden gem with stunning views! Cars can be parked very closed to the lighthouse so it can be a quick stop. Breathtaking views with a cute little lighthouse are what to expect.
Vivian — Google review
Beautiful view and well worth the drive to see, only a very short walk from the car park to the lighthouse
Adam Smith — Google review
Nice little stop to get some great views over the coast line. Very easy stroll. Be sure to take a look through the binoculars to try spot some birds on the island.
Isabella Galka — Google review
Nice easy walk from car park scenic views to wineglass Bay could see a school of dolphins from top viewing area.

A short walk to the lighthouse and lookout. Easy parking available. Beautiful views all around. There are spots to sit along the way.

What a massive surprise this was. We almost didn't put it on the list to see but I almost think it was the highlight of Freycinet for me!!! The views are incredible. It's a boardwalked path so super easy. Lots of spots to sit. Bring binnoculars. I could have stayed there for hours!!!
Team Thomas — Google review
The lighthouse is really small. Was not expecting that. The walk to the lighthouse is pretty easy. It was very windy when we visited and saw one wallaby too!
illion — Google review
If you do not want to do the wineglass bay walk and have young kids come here and do this circuit. This is a wheelchair and pram friendly circuit and only takes about 15 mins. Well worth the visit with 360 degrees views of the Feycinet National Park. You can also have partial views of wineglass bay and honeymoon bay. We spotted a wallaby in the car park as well.
Rabail Abeer — Google review
Very nice coastal walk to the lighthouse. Just about 20 mins return. The walk itself is very nice but the lighthouse was just ok. Lots of information boards along the way. Very easy walk.
Elsa Watson — Google review
If you're visiting Freycinet, you'd be remiss to skip this short viewpoint. It's one of the best along the coast and there are friendly wallabies in the parking lot awaiting your attention

Freycinet National Park is an old national park in Tasmania, consisting of Freycinet Peninsula, Schouten Island and Friendly Beaches. It boasts of its stunning pink granite mountains, clear blue bays and white sandy beaches like the renowned Wineglass Bay. It was named after French navigator Louis de Freycinet and was established in 1916. Visitors can enjoy camping facilities, a visitors' center and different walking trails to explore the park's breathtaking views.
Magnificent national park! Huge mountains by the sea, great trails, lighthouses, beaches, vehicle and car access plus camping spots. The bathrooms were great. Some of the hikes like wine glass bay had a huge payoff. My favourite was the lighthouse, walk, seeing the seals play and all the sea birds and penguins on the nugget islands. Listening to yellow tail cockatoos fly past and eating delicious seafood from the Freycinet bay paired with local wines. Magnificent place to indulge and enjoy.

Absolutely beautiful place, its a MUST see if you come to Tassie. We did the 1.5hr return walk. There are lots of steps (& places to sit & catch your breath!) But well worth it. You need the National Parks pass also.
Tonia Barbera — Google review
The Wineglass Bay cruise was fabulous. Pay the extra money to be on the top deck it is so worth it. The skipper Noah, is Tasmania’s own Steve Irwin, and had a ball finding wildlife for our viewing pleasure. His love of the area is obvious, he really knows a lot about the area. Sarah, was a brilliant hostess for the sky lounge. She’s so over qualified to be a hostess but my golly gosh, she was great at taking care of everyone. I just wish we had been able to walk on the sand after lunch.
Roslyn Huri — Google review
We completed the Wineglass Bay and Hazards Beach Loop which was approximately 12km total. This walk had everything that you could ask for - incredible views, changing scenery and terrain, and close encounters with native flora and fauna. A brilliant way to unwind and get back in touch with nature.
Jasmin Strobel — Google review
Easy walk, but budget 1.5 hours due to photo taking time and navigating around people). Realistically about a 25 minutes walk up and about 10-15 return without too much exertion (at least for us - middle age but fit). It's meant to be a one way path (way up is different to way to car park), but we saw a number of people go the wrong way around... Well worth the views but no one was at the beach so we gave that a skip.
Karl Chong — Google review
Absolutely stunning scenery and bushwalking. Tracks are well maintained . Wineglass Bay was beautiful, it was too windy and cold to swim...but a few people were. There were quite a few steps to get up. We also went to Hazards Beach which was a bit more exposed .highly recommend
Mia Barry — Google review
Don’t miss this place if you like trails, bushwalking, scenic views, mountains, birds and wildlife. Long walk but not hectic. Heaps of spots to stop and rest. Kids friendly, as you will see walkways built with high railings for safety. Great views all around the walk. Doesn’t take long time to complete the circuit but make sure you carry water bottle. No issues with parking. Saw heaps of aged people also enjoying the walk. Carry jackets as it can be windy and a bit cold, if you are not used to typical Tassie climate.
R D — Google review
I can’t understand why this place isn’t more famous than every other national park in Australia. It’s so well maintained by Parks & Wildlife Tasmania, and has the best views and scenery in the country. The walks vary from quick and easy to long and challenging so there’s something for everyone. With views you won’t get anywhere else in the world.
Reis M — Google review
Wineglass is one of the most beautiful lookout and beach I have ever seen. Great walk through the forest and the mountain, besides you can visit more bays
Camilo Pinto — Google review
Let me start by saying Freycinet National Park is everything the postcards promised and more. The granite peaks jutting out from the crystal-clear water, the impossibly white sand at Wineglass Bay - it's all true, and it takes your breath away. But what surprised me most was how quickly you can trade those picture-perfect scenes for hidden coves and deserted beaches. One minute you're elbow-to-elbow with fellow tourists snapping photos, and the next you've wandered a bit off the beaten path and stumbled upon a beach all to yourself. It's like the park has a secret compartment - a place for those who are willing to do a little extra exploring. Don't get me wrong, the hike to the Wineglass Bay lookout is a must-do. The views are panoramic and unforgettable. But I also highly recommend checking out the Friendly Beaches. The walk is shorter and easier, and the reward is a string of beautiful little coves, each one seemingly trying to outdo the other in terms of serenity. I stayed in a cabin near Coles Bay, which was a good choice. It was comfortable and close to the park entrance, but next time, I think I might try camping. Waking up to the sound of the waves and going to sleep under a sky crammed with stars would be an incredible experience. Overall, Freycinet National Park is a place that will stay with you long after you leave. It's wild, it's beautiful, and it offers something for everyone, from hardcore hikers to beach bums like me.
Thanh Hảo Lê — Google review
Just go if you can, lives up to the hype. Now that the track has been updated , the walk to the lookout is definitely manageable for anyone with a remotely average fitness. If you have time I'd recommend doing the full hazard walk one day (Nice mix of beaches) and then Mt Amos another day (best view) We only took ~3-3.5 hours for the hazard circuit including stopping for a light lunch and a swim at wineglass.

Freycinet is a gorgeous national park on the East Coast of Tasmania. The place boasts magnificent views with some brilliant hikes. If you enjoy a solid hike, give Mt Amos a try. The summit of Mt Amos is spectacular!
The Local Guide — Google review
It's a bit of a drive in and out, but of you love good nature scenery then this is your place. Visit the lighthouse, it's worth the drive and just a short walk from the carpark with great photo ops. Wineglass Bay lookout is an uphill walk and even if your mildly fit is doable for the fantastic views. There's a better view from the other walk but you do need to be fit and have good weather.
Bluey Roy — Google review
A stunning place! The trees, wildlife and beaches are all amazing. So many different environments to explore. If you can, do the 11km Wineglass Bay, Isthmus Track and Hazards Beach walk loop. It's well worth the effort.
David Owens — Google review
We've been wanting to hike Freycinet National Park (Wineglass Bay) for years, and it was indeed spectacular. The views of the crystal clear waters and curved white beach were worth the 5-hour return road trip from Hobart. We took the simpler hiking route to Wineglass Bay lookout and Coles Bay lookout (which requires a reasonable amount of fitness. For trekkers wanting a bit more adventure, the Mt Amos track is much more challenging, and some boulder scrambling is required. The drive itself was quite the stomach churning experience - we have never seen so much roadkill before. We hired a Tesla for the day and located a charging station on Noyes St, Swansea, for re-charging during the road trip.
Amy — Google review
Tracks are very well maintained, several options for walks, there are options for a short walk to viewing points or a longer half day hike. I’d recommend doing the loop to Wineglass Bay then Hazards Beach, took us about 4 hours to complete. Nice beaches to swim in too! Lots of wallabies around.
Julian Seow — Google review
An excellent National Park located next to And around Coles Bay. It has a lot to do. Bush trails, hill climbs, beach walks etc. lots of accommodation options from camping to a resort. You must have a National Parks pass for entry. Ample parking and toilets available at major highlights like Wine Glass Bay lookout. Make sure you allow a few days as there is so much to see and do.
