Kelaniya Raja Maha Viharaya

Mentioned on
Buddhist temple
Sights & Landmarks
The Kelaniya Raja Maha Viharaya is an important and ancient temple located in the Kelaniya area, just a short drive from Colombo City. According to Buddhist tradition, it was visited by Lord Buddha himself on his third and final visit to Sri Lanka. The temple boasts stunning paintings by a renowned artist and offers a peaceful and relaxed environment for visitors. However, the presence of vendors selling religious items may be disruptive to those seeking quiet reflection.
Very nice temple. You may observe all the rituals while being there. The only problem for tourists is that there are no English translations there (except "toilet", which is good), everything is written in local language and alphabet. Remember - if someone brings you flowers, you cannot take them. You just put your hands on them. Also you can buy flowers nearby (in the same territory) and put them near the statues of Gods (there are many there). If you put the flowers, you have to hack the stems and put only the flowers' blossoms. Also you may take a colorful pitch and water the sacred tree. Don't forget to take off your shoes before entering the area of the temple (near the gates, just look when the locals do that). But it's worth to take socks with you as the sand may be hot, also your feet will stay clean.

Kelaniya Raja Maha Viharaya, also known as Kelaniya Temple, is a renowned Buddhist temple situated in the city of Kelaniya, Sri Lanka. With its rich history and cultural significance, the temple holds a special place in the hearts of both locals and visitors alike. Believed to have been built over 2,500 years ago, the Kelaniya Raja Maha Viharaya stands on the banks of the Kelani River, adding to its scenic charm. According to legends, the temple was visited by Lord Buddha himself during his third and final visit to Sri Lanka, known as the "Dakkhina Vibhanga Sutta." This historical connection has made it a revered pilgrimage site for Buddhists around the world. As one enters the temple premises, they are greeted by a magnificent white stupa, standing tall and radiating a sense of tranquility. The stupa, known as the "Mahachaitya," is said to enshrine sacred relics of Lord Buddha. It is a focal point for devotees who come to pay their respects and seek blessings. The temple complex houses several other structures that showcase the brilliance of ancient Sri Lankan architecture. The "Viharage" or the image house is a beautifully adorned hall that houses numerous statues of Lord Buddha, depicting different postures and gestures. These statues are skillfully crafted and hold great artistic and religious value. One of the most significant attractions within the temple is the stunning murals that adorn the walls of the Viharage. These vibrant paintings depict scenes from Buddhist mythology and the life of Lord Buddha, showcasing intricate details and vibrant colors. The murals are considered to be masterpieces of Sinhalese art and provide a glimpse into the island's rich cultural heritage. The temple also features a Bodhi tree, believed to be a sapling of the sacred Bodhi tree in India under which Lord Buddha attained enlightenment. Devotees gather around the tree, offering flowers and lighting oil lamps, seeking spiritual enlightenment and guidance. Throughout the year, Kelaniya Raja Maha Viharaya hosts various religious festivals and events, attracting devotees and tourists from all corners of the world. The most significant celebration is the Duruthu Perahera, a grand procession that takes place in January, featuring traditional dancers, drummers, and adorned elephants. The temple comes alive with vibrant colors, music, and the devotion of the participants. In addition to its religious importance, the Kelaniya Raja Maha Viharaya serves as a center for learning and meditation. Monks reside within the temple, guiding visitors in their spiritual journeys and imparting teachings of the Buddha. Visiting the Kelaniya Raja Maha Viharaya is a mesmerizing experience that offers a serene escape from the hustle and bustle of daily life. It allows visitors to immerse themselves in the rich Buddhist heritage of Sri Lanka, marvel at the intricate architecture, and find solace in the peaceful surroundings.

I recently visited the Kelaniya Raja Maha Viharaya, and it was a truly breathtaking experience. This ancient Buddhist temple, just a short distance from Colombo, is not just a beautiful landmark but also a haven of peace and spirituality. What I loved: Stunning architecture: The whitewashed buildings with intricate carvings and the iconic stupa overlooking the lake are instantly captivating. Stepping into the temple complex felt like stepping back in time, enveloped by centuries of history and devotion. Serene atmosphere: The temple grounds exude a profound sense of calm. The gentle chanting of monks, the fragrant incense, and the soft clinking of prayer bells create a truly meditative atmosphere. Rich history: Kelaniya Raja Maha Viharaya is believed to have been visited by the Buddha himself, adding another layer of significance to its sacred aura. It was fascinating to learn about the temple's long and storied past through the informative plaques and exhibits. Beautiful details: Everywhere you look, there's something captivating – intricate murals depicting Buddhist stories, vibrant statues, and delicate lotus ponds. I spent hours simply wandering and taking in the beauty of the place. Things to keep in mind: Dress code: Remember to dress modestly, covering your shoulders and knees. You can rent sarongs at the entrance if needed. Footwear: Leave your shoes outside before entering the temple. Respectful behavior: Maintain silence and be mindful of the sacredness of the site. Overall, I highly recommend visiting the Kelaniya Raja Maha Viharaya. It's a place that will leave you feeling serene, inspired, and connected to something greater than yourself. Tips: Visit early in the morning or late afternoon to avoid the crowds, especially on weekends. Consider hiring a guide for a deeper understanding of the temple's history and significance. Take some time to meditate or simply sit and soak in the peaceful atmosphere

The origin of the Church is accorded to Fr. Antonio. He was a companion to Joseph Vaz and had been assigned to minister to the religious needs of the Catholics in Colombo. He resided in a small house near Philip Neri's Church in Pettah and whilst working as a labourer during the day, in the nights he held service for the faithful. One day on hearing that the Dutch soldiers aware of his residence were coming to arrest him, Fr. Antonio fled towards Kotahena. Some fishermen recognized him. The erosion of the sea, which prevented them from drying their nets, and promised him protection, if he could intercede from his God forth sea to recede, frustrated them. The priest surrounded by the fishermen and the soldiers who had by then arrived, prayed and the sea receded. The Dutch soldiers reported the incident to the Governor who gave the priest the land. He built on it a small hut and since the priest was from Cochin, the land was referred to as the place in which the Cohin had a shop hence the name Kochchikade.

Cool place to hang out. The square has a nice feeling of openess. I reached here on a hot day around noon. There was a nice breeze blowing and since the pavilion is at a slight height with open sides it was perfect. The pavilion is made of stone which adds to the cooling effect. Lots of open space, water bodies and greenery around. Fww people were sketching various scenes here and it was a very plesant 1 hour visit. The independence arcade shopping complex is next door but looked quite empty and deserted. The place has significant historical interest. The top panels have various carving depicting what appears to be scenes from Lord Buddhas life. There are stone sculputures of lions around the periphery which give the pavilion a nice aesthetic.

Independence Square in Colombo stands as a splendid testament to Sri Lanka's journey to independence from British rule in 1948. Its enduring beauty, characterized by classic Sri Lankan architecture, is a sight to behold and a tribute to the nation's history. The architectural magnificence here is truly awe-inspiring, with intricate details etched into pillars and an overall ambiance of beauty. The open and green expanse, flanked by wide roads, offers an inviting environment. A visit to this national monument is a must, as it encapsulates history within a serene setting. The pavilion, constructed from stone, contributes to a cooling effect that adds to the comfort of the experience. The spaciousness, water features, and lush green surroundings enhance the sense of tranquility. Stone sculptures of lions gracing the periphery provide an aesthetic touch. What's remarkable is that there's no entrance fee to explore this historical gem. On the opposite side, the luxurious shopping arcade offers yet another elegant architectural marvel, akin to a small palace. Independence Square is a journey into Sri Lanka's past and a celebration of its progress. As you wander amidst architectural splendor, you'll not only immerse yourself in history but also experience the harmony of open spaces, artistry, and greenery.

This monument, built to commemorate Sri Lanka's independence in 1948, is clearly a testament to the nation's history and beauty. The fact that it's well-maintained and a popular spot for locals to relax is a testament to its significance in the community. Additionally, the nearby arcade, formerly a mental hospital, has been transformed into a modern and pristine space where both locals and tourists can enjoy Western shops amidst unique architecture. The morning and evening walks at Independence Square Colombo is my favorite of all the walking tracks available. It is full of greenery and you can take different routes every time. You’ve got architecture to admire, Colombo skies, beautiful trees and overall a beautiful view. You get a free gym facility maintained by the government. A few healthy food stalls that offer herbal porridge, king coconut and even snacks to fulfill your thirst and hunger. Children can ride their bikes or roller skate/ blade around the area. Their is a special cycle track and you can find a little shop that hires bicycles for a very reasonable hourly rate. A nice place to visit for both foreigners and locals.

It features a striking blend of modern and traditional architecture, with highlights including the Simamalka Shrine, the Vihara, the Relic Chamber, and an array of colorful Buddhas.
The best place to visit in Colombo is this beautiful temple of Lord Buddha. The architecture is stunning, and the decoration, the ambience and the interiors are breathtaking. You will find a lot of calmness and peace in your heart when you are there. We ended up sitting there quietly in front of bow tree inside, for 2 hours, appreciating the beauty and feeling grateful for just being there. A must visit for everyone!

A good Buddhist temple to visit in the city centre. Therefore regular Buddhist teachings to run for those who are interested. Unfortunately that's only for those who speaks Sinhalese. Look at the picture I took in my last visit and you'll see how different it is from other temples.

It’s more of a museum/ personal collection than a temple. It’s still nice to visit and see items they have there. Some quiet zones are there if you’re Buddhist and want to find a corner to pray or make merit.

One of the most beautiful Buddha temple I have ever been to. Can easily spend an hour or two in this serene place. There is a museum of antique with statues and artefacts from around the world where Buddhism is practiced. The whole place is divine and made my mind calm. After I visited this temple there is another one opposite to Court Marriott which is also beautiful. Entrance is free when you show the temple tickets.

It is one of the most beautiful sights in Colombo. The church consists of several small rooms with various sculptures and decorative elements, a museum section. Attached to the church is a souvenir shop made of carved wood that used to be a restaurant. Admission is 400 RPS ($ 2).

We really love this temple, very lively and a lot of pieces on exhibition as this seems partly a museum as well. Very interesting architecture, especially nice while the drumming ceremony

Gangarama Temple is an important Buddhist spiritual place located in Colombo city. This temple, which is revered by all Buddhists and non-Buddhists, has also attracted tourists from home and abroad. As well as the beauty here, one can get great knowledge from the museum here. Come and worship this temple with your extinguished lamps in mind.

Colombo's Buddhist temple is a must-visit. It's an old and captivating complex with a main temple, a museum, and a serene lake. You can explore various artifacts related to Buddhism in the museum. The admission fee for adults is 400 rupees, and it can be combined with access to the meditation space in the middle of the lake, which is a unique experience. If you visit on a Poya night, it takes the experience to a whole new level. The temple is conveniently located near Galle Face Green and can be reached by walking, taxi, or tuktuk. There's also a nearby lake and a bus stop within a short walk. Enjoy the beautiful evening lights and the surreal atmosphere of this place.

Such a great temple that has different influences from other architectures from different countries like China, India and Thailand. The statues were so detailed and it was like the European churches but this in a temple with Buddha statues. Don’t see this in every other countries if you’re from outside of Asia. Definitely worth visit! I paid LKR400 at the door and went early in the morning around 7am and only local people were here. I was the first tourist and had the chance to take so many pictures and videos. The traffic was smooth to get there too because it was before the peak hours. Make sure that you cover your wear or bring something to cover your shoulders and knees before entering the temple.

A place to visit once you are in Colombo. Nice historical places where you can meditate and be thankful to GOD for all the good things that happened in your life. And just a reminder to, Take charge of your life by avoiding toxic people and neutralizing their toxicity. Protect your peace, don't let toxic people pollute your world. Be safe and God Bless

This temple was my fist ever Buddha temple and i was amazed at the statue room and the details and colors inside this room. There are several other things to see too like a small museum and other statues and stupas around the property. There is an entrance fee for foreigners.

One of the most beautiful and interesting places in Colombo. The decorations, artifacts, ornaments and the architecture are amazing and calming. There are several buildings in the premises. One holds the relic, one a museum, a few halls, a Bodhi, and many more Are there to been seen and worshipped. Will need around an hour or more to appreciate all the segments in it.

As a temple - definitely worth seeing. The sort of museum is... funny. Authentic Indian figurines are mixed with toys like Transformers 😂. Overall positive. You'll walk barefooted. Entrance fee is about a 1 USD...

Gangaramaya Temple in Colombo, Sri Lanka, emerges as a captivating blend of modern architecture and cultural heritage, making it a cornerstone of spiritual exploration. Situated gracefully on the shores of Beira Lake, it stands as one of the city's most significant and visually stunning landmarks. This temple is a marvel to behold, adorned with endless sculptures of Lord Buddha and a wealth of Hindu relics that harmoniously coexist. The amalgamation of these elements renders an almost surreal ambiance within the bustling cityscape. The sculptures and resplendent golden viharas are truly captivating. One can't help but be drawn to the lifelike concrete elephant, an almost realistic portrayal that stands as a testament to craftsmanship. The temple's policy of unrestricted photography allows for capturing every intricacy within its sacred halls. A substantial museum within the temple complex holds a treasure trove of gifts from devotees, including opulent offerings like Rolls Royces, watches, and jewelry. To truly appreciate its various facets, a minimum of an hour is recommended. Foreign visitors are required to pay an entrance fee of approximately 400 LKR, encompassing access to the meditation center as well. Gangaramaya Temple extends an invitation to serenity, offering a refuge for the soul amidst the city's bustling energy. This spiritual haven encapsulates an unparalleled aesthetic, beckoning exploration, and reflection. A visit here is an experience that nourishes the senses and enriches the spirit.

Very interesting temple, composed of several very different spaces. Admission for adults is 400 rupees and can be combined with entry to the meditation space in the middle of the lake. If you can visit on a Poya night, you will take the experience to a higher level.

Looks surreal in the city. Feels a bit like china. The sculptures and golden viharas are very beautiful. Concrete elephant was inside. You can take photos of anything anywhere inside. They keep your stuff safe outside, even your helmets. Parking was on the road. Evening lights were great.

A massive Buddhist temple in the middle of the city. Don't be deceived from the outside. The complex is very large inside with plenty to see. Worth the price of admission. Be aware that it's shoes off inside and can be quite dirty. There isn't any proper footwash anywhere, find a nearby tap is the best you can ask for. If you buy a ticket here, make sure you go visit the smaller temple floating on the riverside down the road which is included in the price of admission.

Many thanks to our tour guide who was nice enough to take us to this temple even though it was not part of our travel itenary. Truly amazed and mesmerized with everything they have inside the temple. U need about half a day to see everything in it. We spend about an hour inside the temple It's more of a mesuem and the collection is just amazing. It should be a must visit if you are in Colombo. Appropriate attire is mandatory. You are given a wrap around skirt if you are wearing short clothes :)

Gangaramaya temple is located near the famous lake Beira right in the center of the city in Colombo. This is one of the most ancient temples in the city and has the smallest statue of Buddha (termed as number 13) on the left hand side of the entrance in the main building. The temple has a mix of old and new architecture and cultural essence and is typically crowded by the tourists as it's in the middle of the main hub and busy area.

Visiting Gangaramaya Temple was a serene experience. The expansive compound surpassed my expectations, and the tranquil atmosphere around the sacred tree, where devotees pray, was truly calming. Remember to remove your shoes before entering the temple. Inside, a fascinating museum-like corner houses a variety of Buddhist deity statues, adding depth to the spiritual journey.

A very interesting Buddhist temple right in the center of Colombo in a quiet and peaceful location. The facility is large and spacious. There are many beautiful rooms, impressive sculptures, beautiful decorations and numerous Buddhist exhibits to see. Shoes must be removed before entry. You can enter the temple barefoot or with socks. Men and women should not dress revealingly. Clothing on the legs that is at least knee length. The arms may be exposed. An excellent place to visit!

Beautiful place, more of a museum than a temple. There is a charge of 400 LKR for foreigners. The temple is primarily a Buddhist temple with thousands of statues of lord Buddha but you can find some other Hindu gods as well. The place is very well managed and huge collection of various antique pieces. A must see for tourists.

Serene Temple when there's not a tour happening. If a tour is going through, wait it out and sit in the peace in the garden and bathe in good energy. Long history here, doubles as a museum. 400 lkr per person for foreigners. They have lockers if you need and can provide wraps if you're wearing shorts.

Quite unique temple as it is temple as well as museum. It is very big and has different sections to explore. Definitely worth visiting in your day trip to explore Colombo city. Opt for more guided tour to know the history behind the temple.
Mansi Oza — Google review
It is more of a museum rather than a holistic place. It doesn't have the same religious vibes as other temples. It is worth checking. You pay 400 rupees to keep your shoes outside. Remember, you need to cover yourself. It is preferable to have a guide to explain things around. I went without a guide as no-one offered the same which didn't give the best experience (in my opinion)

Restaurant
Ministry of Crab, founded by Sri Lankan cricketing legends Mahela Jayawardene and Kumar Sangakkara along with culinary expert Dharshan Munidase, is a seafood haven that pays homage to the country's delectable crabs. The restaurant, which opened in 2012 in a restored old hospital building, has quickly become a favorite among locals and tourists.
Great service, friendly staff. Crabs were fresh and delicious! I ordered the oyster sixers, claypot curry prawn, pepper crabs, garlic chili crab, ice tea sodas. Everything tasted great! No doubt the price is on the steeper side but I think it is worth a visit considering the great service and lovely ambience. Check out their cute crab nut cracker! I bought 4 of them home! It’s simply cute and easy to use!

The service is very fast and professional. The food is good...reminds a gourmet cousin with asian flavours. To be a franchising I have to say that the experience was better than expected. The crab avocado salad was great. The fresh water prawn was also satisfying. Tiger prawns were normal and the big prawn was good. Prices are a bit higher than other restaurants. I would go back.

What an incredible experience at Ministry of Crabs in Colombo! It absolutely lived up to the hype. The crab here is simply outstanding, the best I've ever tasted. A definite must-visit for any seafood lover!

We were in Colombo for just over 24 hours and definitely couldn't leave without having a meal at the Ministry of Crab. The OG. We were lucky to get a lunch slot and yeah - at the Captain's Table. We were graciously greeted and seated by smart hospitable professionals who gave us relevant suggestions. The food was mind blowing. Loved the oysters, the clay pot prawn curry, the chili garlic crab, pepper crab and the button mushrooms. The crab and prawns were aptly flavoured and cooked to perfection. The staff in the kitchen and restaurant worked with clockwork efficiency. Loved every dish and the whole experience.

Highly recommended in Colombo and I sea why! Had a booking at 7pm wouldn’t recommend much later as they do run out of crab sizes through the evening. The coconut creme brûlée is a must.

Nice place to stop and have some crab or prawns. Nice friendly staff goes over and beyond to make sure you are served well. Expect to pay a bit more. I don't expect people to go here every day. It is much more once in a while dinning experience. Very spacious and well organised.

Both the food and service inside were perfect. The price was a bit high, but the food was delicious nonetheless. I have a strong desire to visit again. If you visit Sri Lanka, you must come here. I highly recommend this restaurant.

I ordered the half a kilo crab with garlic chili and the presentation of the meals was very impressive, However, it was drenched in oil- there was way too much oil in the meals that I couldn’t really enjoy the flavors. The crab itself was good quality. For the hefty price that I paid, I expect the food to be near flawless. I’m only awarding three stars due to the excellent service that I got, but I know I can get much better value for money elsewhere. The place seems a bit but overhyped and I’m disappointed to say the least.
Michie Will — Google review
I'm baffled by the popularity of this restaurant, as I couldn't find anything remarkable about their crabs. The chili crab, in particular, was a disappointingly bland and uninspired dish. While I initially enjoyed the oysters, I was struck with food poisoning shortly thereafter, experiencing severe diarrhea and vomiting for about three hours. While taste preferences vary, I cannot recommend this establishment to anyone. My dining experience left me utterly dissatisfied, and I will not be returning.

Great place to savour seafood, especially crabs in colombo. Housed in a 400 years old Dutch hospital building that has been converted to food court, it is a must visit place for crab lovers. Dishes are priced according to the size of the crab. Assortment of breads and rice preparation serve as accompaniments. Reserve a table before your visit as it is quiet a busy place with tourists.

The restaurant is located inside a 400-year-old hospital built by the Dutch, providing a fantastic ambiance. The staff is exceptionally friendly. The crab is among the best I've ever had, and don't miss out on the prawns – they are large, with a delightful texture, making the dining experience truly enjoyable.
Zach Yao — Google review
The overall food quality won’t let you down. The signature garlic chilli crab is of high standard, but what surprised me was the butter soy prawns. Bread is provided and it goes really well with the “butter soy” with the prawn essence. The down side though will be pricing. You can expect first world pricing or I would have rated it 5 stars. Feel free to browse the menu price change over the last few years, you will be shocked how much it went up.

Incredible place with incredible food! The prawn curry is hands down the best curry I’ve ever had! The pepper crab was delicious too! If I can recommend two things here they would be the prawn curry and the crab fried rice! Highly recommend the ice tea carafe too! Refreshing drink! Definitely worth visiting.

I usually don’t bother with reviews, but this travesty of a dining experience can’t go unmentioned. Despite the sparse negative reviews, I decided to give this place a chance, hoping they weren’t accurate. I was wrong. Don’t be fooled by this establishment. The pictures? Pure deception. The reality? A grossly overpriced mockery of what quality dining should be. We were lured in with hopes of a top-tier meal, only to be served with the sole decent item, an Italian Prosecco. Ordered medium crabs that were supposed to weigh 700-800 grams each? Expect to be served pathetic remnants barely worth mentioning. Their so-called crab salads? Just half an avocado with a pitiful amount of crab. And while the oysters were passable, it wasn’t enough to save this disaster of a meal. Shelled out $228 and for what? The illusion of quality in Colombo. We walked out, wallets lighter, stomachs still empty, and regret heavy in the air. Consider this a warning: steer clear unless you want to throw money down the drain!

The restaurant is beautifully decorated. Atmosphere is nice and cool. I ordered the curry crab / chilli crab and a garlic chilli prawn. Crabs and prawns were fresh and delicious. The price was a bit high. Recommended for all seafood lovers.

We had a pleasant dining experience here! Crabs are fresh and have lots of meat. We ordered 2 crabs (1.3 kg each) which are more than enough for 4 people. Chilli garlic flavour is the most popular but they’re not spicy and very buttery. Not too fond of this but others like it 3.5/5 Curry flavour is a bit spicier and more flavourful 4/5 Prawn fried rice 5/5 love the rice but it’s kinda small (portion for 1-2 people) Must get the breads to dip in crab gravy. 5/5 Garlic fried rice 5/5 (for 1-2 people) Pol sambol is great 5/5 Servers are attentive and professional. Price point is definitely much higher than other restaurants. You either know this place from Instagram or other social media. Customers are mostly tourists. We paid close to $600 for 6 adults (our kids don’t eat anything).
Vivian Jey — Google review
We decided to see what all the hype was about at this restaurant, and we left with mixed feelings. Let's start with the positives. The service was truly exceptional. What added a unique touch was the use of wireless headphones by the restaurant staff to communicate with each other, which added a certain level of sophistication to the dining experience. However, when it came to the food, we were slightly underwhelmed. In the menu at that moment only three options: small, medium, and large crab was available . We opted for the large crab, which had a decent flavor, but we couldn't help but feel that the price was quite steep for what we received. We had previously dined at other restaurants with similarly sized crabs at a significantly lower cost. One redeeming aspect of this restaurant is its commitment to a noble cause. They mention that their profits go to a non-governmental organization (NGO), which gives some justification to the higher prices. In conclusion, if you're looking for a unique dining experience with excellent service and don't mind paying a bit more for a good cause, this restaurant might be worth a visit. However, if you're primarily seeking value for money in your crab feast, you might find better options elsewhere.
Nikhil Kalladithodi — Google review
Overrated, which our local hosts warned us it would be. How this is one of the best restaurants in Asia I will never understand. The service was responsive but so quick that we felt we were being rushed to turn the table. The avocado crab salad was bland and only tasted like honey mustard, the baked crab was tasty but I probably could have made better at home, and the garlic chili crab was positively soaked in oil and had mediocre flavor at best. Worth $170? Definitely not

We had an unforgettable experience here at the Ministry of Crab. The crab is of excellent export quality, and the size of some of them is insane. Just an amazing place. Not cheap but not overly expensive. Situated in the old Dutch hospital the restaurant has great atmosphere and charm. Over 400 years old. There is a constant buzz of excitement in the air with everyone enjoying the food and great service. You will need to pre-book and you get a two hour slot for the tables as many are waiting to sit for an experience. If you are visiting Colombo we think it's a must to experience.

It's worth trying while visiting Colombo. The price is pretty expensive (spent around US$100 per person), but the food is great. The crab avocado was fresh as an appetizer. The crab was a good size and nicely seasoned—though the oil could be slightly reduced. The garlic bread was a bid disappointing as it had no garlicky taste to it. But the coconut creme brule was a winning dessert.

Delicious fresh and alive crab, made with their special spicy sauce. We had 1.5 kg for three persons, more than enough! Additionally we had fried rice and other side dishes to complete our meal. The iced tea is a must have, so is the crab. The clams were not well cleaned so they didn't charge us for it. Overall, a great moment with delicious food and 225€ bill :)

My friend gave me the BEST tip ever when he recommended this incredible restaurant in Negombo! Just walking in, I knew it was going to be something special. They have a huge menu with all sorts of yummy choices, but their seafood is seriously next-level. We went around the last week of December, and they were celebrating their anniversary with awesome traditional dances and events – it was such a fun vibe! The staff was also fantastic, super friendly and attentive. If you're looking for an absolutely amazing place to eat in Negombo, look no further! From the menu to the service to the food, everything is on point. Even the owner of the restaurant came and greet to us which is very nice thing to do. Salute to the staff for the very well customer service. Also can’t forget the chef. The food is heavenly tasty. Can join for the live music. You also can get a complimentary free fish foot and hand spa as well. Very well cleaned and very spacious. Car park is also available. This is a very vibrant place, and we are not the targeted age group, but we went for dinner as had great reviews. Staff friendly and helpful. But the food was not as good as we anticipated. It was nice, large plate, small portion starter. The main was a generous portion with side dishes, that were well presented. This is the most expensive meal we’ve paid for since being in Sri Lanka, but I understand some of the profits go to help stray dogs, so that helped

Great Food, Poor ServiceI recently dined and had a mixed experience. The food itself was delicious, earning a solid 9/10 rating. However, the service left much to be desired. Despite the presence of numerous waitstaff, they seemed oblivious to our needs, leading to frustratingly long wait times. For starters, our group experienced a significant delay in receiving our orders, with one dish even going missing altogether. Despite bringing this to the attention of the staff, the issue remained unresolved by the time we finished our meal, prompting us to cancel the missing order. Even when we opted for dessert, the ordeal continued. Waiting over 30 minutes for simple items like frozen yogurt and ice cream was excessive, and to make matters worse, my order was prepared incorrectly, requiring an additional 20-minute wait for syrup.

It is situated in the Gall Face hotel. You have to walk and it is in downstairs from the Travelers bar and lounge. It is a bit hot and you may feel sweaty however they serve tasty cocktails and variety of side bites and meals are there. Prices are in par with other same rank pub and bars around Colombo. A must go place if you like Latin American or jazz themes. Great place to hangout and chillax with friends and gangs. Service is a bit slow when it is crowded and during peak hours.

Best food I had in Colombo, best view and excellent service. Loved it. Must recommend this restaurant in Galle City View Hotel. You can enjoy a wonderful sundowner with your loved ones. The staff is very attractive and courteous. The view of the sunset is mesmerizing. We tried the lamb lasagna and it was mouth watering.

King of the Mambo is a restaurant and bar that is attached to the iconic Gall Face Hotel. Its location, by the water, with a gorgeous view of the ocean is a big pull to night owls (open from 5 pm till 2 am the next day). The theme of this restaurant is Latin American, with an accent on Cuban fare. The concept is great, but the execution fails to deliver. To begin with, the hard menus sticky and worn out. For appetizers, I ordered the Grilled Oysters Rockefeller (they needed to brown the top) hence it felt short in flavor. After that, I had the Fried Oysters. This was good and the fried part sat on a small salsa rojo bed inside the oyster shell. Music was from the king of bachata music, American born singer, Romeo Santos, who is well known for his multiplatinum awarded hits. What killed the whole evening was the cigarette smoke that was pervasive all over the open dining/sitting area. Every breadth, every bite also had smoke to it. And just so you know, smoking is allowed. Why? The two tables in front of me were puffing away. And to add insult to injury, the servers were unresponsive and slow. At that point I scrapped my plans to order dinner and headed home.

Great ambiance with nice music and attractive interior. It is open to the sea on one side but is covered throughout with a roof, so need to worry about rain. It can get quite windy though, but that is not much of a problem. The staff is well trained and helpful. Food was excellent but make sure to ask and know what the dish is exactly. The pitchers are of nice quantity and the choices are very good. Food can take some times to be prepared. Great place for a convo and a little dance towards the later at night as well.

If you are looking for a place to enjoy some Latin American cuisines, liquor beverages and other Italian cuisines in Colombo, you might want to check out the restaurant I visited three weeks ago. It is called King of the Mambo and it is located in a cozy and elegant building in the Galle Face Hotel. The restaurant has a spacious and comfortable dining area, with a warm and inviting atmosphere facing towards the beach with a mesmerizing sunset where you can observe in the evening. The staff are friendly and attentive, and they make sure you have a great experience. The menu offers a variety of dishes, from appetizers and salads to pasta and many other items. Service is a bit slow when it is crowded during peak hours. I ordered the ALBONDICAS CON PASTA, PASTA DEL MAR, with fries, and a Mojito. The ALBONDICAS CON PASTA was served with tomato sauce and lamb meatballs consisting of spaghetti whereas PASTA DEL MAR was served with the freshest seafood consisting of spaghetti mixed with tomato sauce. The fries were crispy on the outside and soft on the inside, and they came with ketchup. The Mojito was smooth and refreshing, and it complemented the meal perfectly. My friends and family ordered many varieties of Spaghetti with refreshing beverages. The ordered beverages were cold(perfect), and it balanced the spiciness of the meals my friends and family ordered. We enjoyed our food and drinks, and we were satisfied with the portions and the prices. We had a wonderful time at King of the Mambo, and we would definitely recommend it to anyone who loves Latin American food. The restaurant has a great ambiance, service and food quality, and it is suitable for any occasion. Whether you are looking for a romantic date night, a family outing or a casual hangout with friends, you will find something to suit your taste at King of the Mambo.

The Gallery Café is a unique establishment that serves as both a restaurant and an art gallery, providing a platform for emerging talents and established Sri Lankan artists. Housed in a colonial bungalow that once belonged to renowned architect Geoffrey Bawa, the café has retained its charm and original vision.
Had a wonderful experience at the Gallery cafe, exceptional food and service. Surprisingly they were super quick with the food. Great service. Ideal location about 10car parking space. Ample space for dinning. Usually crowded with foreigners. Bit on the expensive side but believe me its worth it. True cafe experience in colombo.

My recent visit to the cafe-gallery was an enriching experience that tantalized both my taste buds and my love for art. The ambiance was precisely what one needs for a serene afternoon retreat - a perfect blend of relaxation and cultural enrichment. The cafe-gallery stands out with its exceptional display of modern art. The collection of unique pieces created by contemporary artists adds a vibrant and inspiring dimension to the space. I was particularly captivated by the artwork on display, and the delightful surprise that these pieces were available for purchase only added to the charm of the experience. I am now the proud owner of a stunning art piece that I will treasure for a long time. From a culinary perspective, the food was nothing short of astonishing. As a vegan, I was pleased to find vegan options on the menu, which were as delightful as they were thoughtful. However, I believe that expanding the vegan selection and clearly marking these options on the menu would greatly enhance the dining experience for patrons with plant-based preferences. While there were some challenges in communication due to the language barrier with some of the wait staff, their friendliness and eagerness to accommodate were commendable. It's these human touches that add to the welcoming atmosphere of the cafe-gallery. In conclusion, this cafe-gallery is a gem for anyone seeking a unique and tranquil experience. With its combination of excellent cuisine, an inviting vibe, and an inspiring art display, it offers a truly exceptional visit. A few improvements, like an expanded vegan menu and clearer communication, could elevate it to new heights of excellence. I wholeheartedly recommend this cafe-gallery for an experience that is both gastronomically and artistically satisfying.

Can’t recommend highly enough. We recently dined him as overseas travelers and adored the experience. The house itself is phenomenal. The extensive and well thought out menu and food were truly world class. The food was outstanding with unique combinations of flavours extremely well executed. We particularly loved our fish and pasta dishes. There is something for everyone and the only struggle is the ability to choose! Would happily try the whole menu. We are lovers of dining out and this restaurant far exceeded our expectations and has remained with us. We can’t wait to be back. Service was typically Sri Lankan - being outstanding and above hospitable. Cannot fault anything and highly recommended.

Went here for some quick lunch and had a great time. The food was excellent. Definitely get the garlic shrimp, we ordered it multiple times. The mains were great as well! Great place for lunch in the city and the ambience was great as it provided a quiet secluded vibe from the busy city streets of Colombo. Looking forward to coming again on my next visit to the island.

The Gallery Cafe is on the high-end of restaurants and lives up to its reputation with exceptional service and excellent food. Our selection for this evening was fantastic. We chose the Sweet Pumpkin Soup with Pesto and basil to start, mains were Chicken stuffed with cheese and bacon and the vegetarian Brocoli and Mushroom Risotto which were all delicious and hearty portions. And of course for dessert my favourite 'Chocolate Nemesis' a light yet textured mousse that Gallery Cafe does best. I've heard glowing recommendations for all their desserts and some people choose to even drop by after a meal for only dessert. All in all a place for a special dinner or if you're feeling indulgent. A must try.

The mood, the yellow leaves quietly falling in the afternoon sun, the calm oasis feel after a busy day out in colombo. This is a slice of paradise, both in the setting and in their food. I tried their cheesecakes and they were all incredible, I would just suggest eating your way through the menu. For dinner I tried the tandoori salmon and it came on a bed of pesto risotto and the entire dish melted in my mouth. Would definitely recommend coming back again and again to try out their entire menu, and experience different spots to sit at.

We had the most incredible dinner here. We loved the cute, fairy light it square. The food was absolutely delicious. We both took curry’s which were fantastic Cocktails were perfect. We had great service in general but felt rushed out quite early as soon as the majority of people had left (before 10) they kept bringing our bill and hovering around for us to pay which we didn’t appreciate and was the only thing that we didn’t like about the restaurant.

A pleasant place to enjoy a quiet dinner in a good atmosphere. The children's menu is without spicy food. Delicious cocktails and cool beer not available in standard eateries. In the evening, with the onset of darkness, torches and living fire chandeliers are lit, which add a romantic and exotic note to the place.

This spot is an absolute must-visit. Housed within a stunning traditional building, the restaurant boasts a charming courtyard leading to its interior. The outdoor ambiance is superbly designed, offering a plethora of tables with both covered and open seating options. One dish that stands out for me is the delectable baked crab and prawn curry served with rice, although their other menu items are equally delightful.

This place is an oasis of calm in a busy, modern city. The moment you enter the property the elegance and soothing aesthetic of Geoffrey Bawa's style makes you smile. I have visited many times over many years and will return. The staff are friendly & attentive without being intrusive, the food is good and very reasonably priced. If you are in the area, go there it's a beautiful place.

The first time also the last time for me to come here. Because I like Geoffrey Bawa’s architecture and have heard about this restaurant, I came here for the first time. Atmosphere, vibes, architecture, layout, etc. All were good but only one thing that made me so disappointed. It was the service, especially the waiter who served me on that day. First of all, I ordered charcoal chicken papaya salad. But he gave me charcoal beef instead 🙂. Then, I told them that I had not ordered beef because I did not eat beef. I had ordered chicken. But I was shocked when he tried to fight back to affirm that I had ordered beef , not chicken. Oh my goodness!!!! He was wrong and showed as an unprofessional bad waiter at the beginning when he had not reconfirmed the customer’s order after taking my order. I did not know what his name because all of them did not wear the name tag. Secondly, the papaya salad was okay but there was papaya peel in it.. the food was prepared very carelessly The price was expensive as a fine dining restaurant but I think it was not worthy of what I paid. Bad service! Bad server! Bad food preparation!

Food is awesome. And they have a good mix of all varieties of foods. Service is amazing. The staff there treat us like their own people. Atmosphere also is awesome. But unfortunately we've been here for a dinner, and so couldn't enjoy the environment very much in blurry candle light. Best place to have a cheat but a healthy meal during a daytime.

I've been a regular visitor to the Gallery Cafe, but my recent experience was incredibly disappointing. I had made a reservation to host guests for afternoon high tea, but the service was beyond horrible. Firstly, there was a mix-up with the menus, and we had to repeatedly request the high tea option. Even when we ordered, the server struggled to understand our preferences, despite using both Sinhalese and English. The beverage order was completely wrong after waiting for more than 30minutes. After a long wait of over an hour, we received our food little by little, and even then, it was a challenge to identify the dishes. It was important to identify the food as half of the people were vegetarians and a fact that we have informed them in advance. While the food and beverages were delicious, the level of service quality was unexpected at Paradise Road. The experience was uncomfortable, and we didn't feel welcomed due to the mishandling of our order. I hope steps are taken to rectify this situation.

Seafood restaurant
The Lagoon, located at the Cinnamon Grand Hotel in Colombo, is renowned for its exquisite Sri Lankan cuisine and seafood offerings. With a focus on perfectly cooked fish, lobsters, and shrimps prepared in over 150 ways with 30 different sauces, this restaurant offers a diverse and delectable menu. The two skilled head chefs ensure that only the freshest ingredients are used to create an unforgettable dining experience.
The Lagoon at cinnamon grand is one of my favorite seafood restaurant. Family friendly place very clean and with good service. Good ambiance and flavorful food. Although bit on the pricy side for a 5 star hotel restaurant it’s reasonable for the quality, service and the fresh seafood you get. If you order send I lay you can eat well for a very good amount. All seafood prices are mention per 100grams you should then select the preparation. And there appetizers are good too. I make sure I always order the sushi platter and the oyster platter. Of course I personally prefer the fresh oysters with lime and the hot sauce but when I go with family I order the bake oyster versions which is also greatly good with Parmesan. Another must is the peeled prawns in Thai red curry, then small cuttlefish in tamarind sauce, fish fillet in Thai green curry sauce and others depend on the day and mood as they have a huge variety of seafood and some days they have special stuff like lagoon crabs which are really good and then lobster and many more. Price 4:5 Place location and ambiance 5:5 Quality 5:5 Service 5:5 Taste 5:5 Overall 4.9 out of 5 Highly recommend to anyone who loves seafood. Tip: order sensibly don’t rush or get too excited study the items and order in proper quantities and limited items if you want to have a good meal for reasonable price. If your not on a budget you can enjoy without a concern.

The food was good, unfortunately that was the only positive thing about this restaurant. It was so noisy inside so we couldn’t hear each other. The biggest surprise came with the bill where they charged us 31% more for “taxes and service “ !!!!!! On the menu they say charges are 10% + some other taxes but cmon guys 10 and 31 is a huge difference! We confronted the waiter and he says charge is 15%, but we argumented that of you do the math, this is not 15%. He said that the machine just printed the bill like this. So I advise you to avoid this scam. You can get same good seafood in other places 10x cheaper.

Delicious sea food cuisines. You will simply love all the dishes here. There's a wide range of varieties. First, you are served with a welcome drink and a starter till they prepare the ordered food. Great selection of fresh seafood, many types of preparations. They have a lot of different types of seafood, we went for the steamed red snapper. Prices for fish are all around 1000 rupees for 100g. You can choose many different kinds of preparations like European, Indian, Sri Lankan and Chinese style. The fish was very good, but they could have added more lemon sauce. The side dishes are also great. The seafood pineapple fried rice was outstanding, the fried vegetables in a butter, garlic and oyster sauce was great as well. Pasta in cream sauce was alright for a side dish. Add a fresh Lion beer and you are all set. Be aware of the added tax and service charge at the end. The food is not cheap, but totally worth the price. And the chocolate you get at the end is worth 1000 rupees.

I definitely did not have a good experience. The only good thing about this place is the taste of the food. They were really tasty. If it wasn't for that, I will not consider returning. Ambience: no decor to indicate it's a sea food restaurant. The background noise was so loud and ugly, we felt like we were in the haunted house at carnivals. Since diners couldn't hear what they were speaking, they were all speaking loud giving the feel of a fish auction place. Definitely not an atmosphere that induces appetite. Customer service: Needs great improvement. Since their ordering system is different, first time customers don't get guidance on how to order. The servers only take orders for appetizers. We are told to give the rest to the fish counter. Here too they do not tell us that mains, sides and or deserts have to be given to them. We are left asking around and waiting for people to come our way to ask whom to order what. There is NO transparency. Although they say they charge by the weight, they actually charge by portions. Even though my daughter took half the quantity of prawns ordered by me, we were charged for 2 portions, which was quite misleading.

My new favorite restaurant. The food and service are outstanding. My favorite was the Modha (Barramundi) fish. It comes filleted, and we had it steamed with chili and lime, upon recommendation by the gentleman who was taking our order. Had to try this place for the Lobster. Prices were the standard for a 5 star dining experience. You pick your seafood and tell them how you want it cooked. The waiters give good recommendations as well. Lobster Vietnamese style, snapper Thai and butter cuttlefish all hit the spot with some fried rice. You will need to book ahead as it gets busy. The indoor and outdoor setting was stunning to say the least.

I came to the Lagoon restaurant to try their lobster. I managed to clinch a reservation for around 8 pm and they seated me at a corner table (since I was solo), away from the main action (I was not too happy). The seating areas are spread out, both inside and outside (by the water). The entrance to the restaurant is one floor below the main level, by stairs, and the outside within the hotel complex. I started with an appetizer of spicy fried sprats. It was superbly cooked, a nice balance of optimum crispness outside and tender meat on the inside. Came with a spicy sauce, which I hardly used because I preferred the flavor of the sprats by themselves. To order your main selection of seafood, one walks over to the main display of various varieties of seafood on ice. The selection is less than this restaurant’s main competitor (I will leave you to guess which one). Choose what you desire, it is weighed in front of you and you can get an idea of the cost. Then choose how you wish it be prepared. Numerous options in style, with suggestions on which type of seafood is best for which choice. I had selected a lobster to be prepared Thermidor. The meat was tender, and the sauce thick, with a mild flavor. But. I do not think the dish was completed. Top grilling is needed to provide browning or slight charring on the top, so that there is a contrast in textures and a heightened flavor. This was absent. I ordered mashed potatoes as the accompaniment. It had the consistency of a thick soup with no taste of potatoes. I could only have one spoon of it. They overdid the consistency. Service was very slow, but good.

Since arriving in Sri Lanka I had been looking forward to eating lobster prepared by an expert chef. So a trip to Lagoon, a restaurant the specialises in seafood preparation was made in eager anticipation. The restaurant is large and was busy on the night I attended. The seafood display and open kitchen were impressive. I ordered crispy spicy sprats to start and a 600g lobster prepared, in accordance with their menu suggestion, in a Sri Lankan spicy, thick coconut sauce. The starter was acceptable, hard not to deep fry some sprats well. Sadly it went rapidly downhill after that. The lobster was overcooked and rubbery, the sauce tasted ok but was watery. I politely pointed this out to the Maitre d'hotel and he informed the chef. I still had food in the serving bowls and offered them to sample it, the offer was not taken up. The Maitre d took my feedback well, the chef's expression (I couldn't hear the conversation) looked like he couldn't care less. My verdict is style over substance, maybe the kind of place people go to be seen or can talk about at parties. I'm pretty sure you can get better seafood elsewhere. I will not return.
