Bukit Lawang-Jungle Trekking

Mentioned on

Nature & Wildlife Areas
The Bukit Lawang-Jungle Trekking tour operator provided a remarkable hiking experience with abundant wildlife sightings, including several Orangutans. The trek was exceptional and allowed for the observation of various species in their natural habitat. The venture was a great opportunity to explore the lush greenery while encountering multiple animals along the way. Overall, it was an outstanding adventure that offered a glimpse into the beauty of nature and its diverse inhabitants.
We had an amazing time with the guys from Bukit Lawang-Jungle Trekking. We booked a 3 days/2 nights tour and they also organised an airport pickup, a second transport and a room for the nights before and after the track. We started in the morning with the hike which was exhausting but we had enough breaks (with plenty of fresh fruits). We've seen 4 orangutans, leaf monkeys, gibbons and macaques. Furthermore a peacock, a snake, birds and insects. The second day hike was pretty demanding but also rewarded by 4 more orangutans, nice views and a nice campsite. In the evening we always got fresh in the jungle cooked food (rice with about 4-5 different main dishes and snacks). Both campsites were located at a river, equipped with sleeping mat, blankets and pillows and a mosquito net. On the last day we took a bath in a cold pool with a waterfall and finally tubed back (tire rafting) to Bukit Lawang. Our guides (both English speaking) were very courteous, answered a lot of questions, made some jokes and and our tour unforgettable. Thank you so much Didi and Baju for guiding us through the jungle and Janine for all the quick and easy organization. I hope we can come back to Bukit Lawang any our jungle friends - and if we can't you have to. 😉

We had a great time on our two-day tour in the jungle. The guides were really helpful and even got up earlier and helped us get back quickly because our flight got rescheduled. Overall, we are really happy with our experience. We got to see a lot of different monkeys including orangutans. The rafting back to the village also was a lot of fun. I would only recommend doing the two-day if you are in good shape as it involved a lot of climbing up and down in the jungle. Also don't underestimate the humidity. Make sure to bring spare clothes (one set to relax and one set for the next day) if you want to enjoy the tour to the fullest. Also bring s rain cover for your backpack. I would bring a silk liner for sleeping bags as the night is really warm. Other then that, stick to the packing list provided on the website.

Totally recommend them. We were in Medan with no plans, all solved by phoning Janine. She sorted our transfers, accommodation and jungle trekking - all were excellent. Great location, nice restaurant with wide selection, lovely rooms (a handful with a/c and beautiful throughout). Our guides were Adi and Yahya, top guys, superb jungle friends. Big thanks Janine and Dodi 🙏

Rather disappointing and overly touristy! In January, we took the 3-day tour with 2 overnight stays. From the beginning, it felt as if we were not genuinely welcomed. The person who picked us up and took us to the hotel didn't even crack a smile. Our tour guide appeared more irritated, making it necessary to extract information from him. This is not what I envision for an informative jungle trek. The second overnight stay is entirely unnecessary, as nothing significant happens on the last evening and day. We saw orangutans and other monkeys, but a day tour would have sufficed, as they were in fixed locations where animals were fed. The jungle trek itself seemed well-trodden, resembling a regular forest more than a jungle. Constant village music drowned the true jungle experience, and the trek involved continuous steep ascents and descents, making it incredibly strenuous with little time to enjoy the jungle. The website promised much but delivered little. We didn't see a single waterfall, there were no campfires, and information about various plants and herbs was only provided upon request. The entire experience was monotonously and poorly organized. The quality of food declined each day but tasted good though. Furthermore, our tour guide had a cold, constantly spat in the forest, and didn't wash his hands before preparing meals, despite us offering him soap (we now have a cold too, thanks for that!) And the guesthouse was a joke. Though not expensive, basic cleanliness (room 11) and soap should be expected. Trying to wash clothes after the trek, they wanted to charge for each item, and even refilling water came with a cost. Terrible. Book a different tour, preferably with a single guide, to ensure transparency in spending. Consider traveling to Ketambe for a more affordable and less touristy experience.

Adi and his team were recommended to us beforehand and it was very easy to get into contact with Adi via Whatsapp a few days ahead and reserve a date for a trekking tour. Overall, it was an amazing experience I wouldn’t want to miss and still think and talk about to this day. Adi and his wife welcomed us in an incredibly friendly way and he took much time out for us to explain the tour and the available options. We booked a 3-day trekking tour including two nights in a jungle hut for ~ 120 $ - a great price given the incredible experience. Adi and his assistant Ian guided us through the jungle in a very professional, cautious, yet very cheerful manner. Ian usually went ahead of us spotting the animals, while Adi was sharing his in-depth knowledge about the jungle-life and the native Orangutan population. The trekking itself is quite challenging in this humid environment (at least for a bit of a couch potato like me) but so much fun! I would definitely recommend long comfortable stretchy pants, socks (to keep out the leeches) and sturdy shoes/sneakers, no flip flops! We took breaks regularly and had little “picnics” with sliced pineapple and watermelons our guides brought along (I can’t even imagine trekking the jungle with a watermelon in my backpack, so we greatly appreciated this effort!). The rich wildlife we encountered included Orangutans of all ages (wild/semi-wild; incredibly impressive animals), Thomas’ Langurs (very friendly, they follow you around), Black Gibbons, Macaques (they did try to sneak up and steal everything food-related), jungle peacocks, turtles, long termite trails, praying mantis, and many more! In the evening we hiked to the jungle hut, where we had an amazing dinner (prepared beforehand by Adi’s wife) and spent the rest of the night playing card games in candle light and telling stories while listening to the intense jungle sounds all around us. I absolutely loved the atmosphere up there, I am sure you will, too. Adi provided us with a mosquito net and a mattress and we had a good night sleep, waking up to fresh tea and coffee prepared by Ian over the open fire and ready to start trekking again the next day. On our last day we did a rafting tour back to the village and even saw another Orangutan in the trees along the river. We had so much fun with Adi and Ian – you can really tell that they care about you as a visitor not just as a customer. The two main differences that clearly set Adi and his team apart from other providers is the very responsible way to treat and take care of the encountered wildlife (unlike other guides they do respect the nature of the animals – keeping a distance, no feeding, no provoking!) and the incredible option of sleeping in the middle of the jungle in a self-built hut (other providers operate a camp site near the river which is apparently quite crowded and not entirely rain-proof). Next time – if my fitness level allows - I would book an even longer tour with Adi where they take you far into the jungle and you get the chance to see tigers. I have to say, out of several months of travelling Asia – this was definitely a highlight! Strongly recommended :)

Our tour was very good! We enjoyed the 3 days with a little group in the jungle with Andi and Ling 😊. We were very lucky to see Orang-Utans and other animals. Lot‘s of delicious food and fresh fruits also gluten intolerance was no problem for them. The boys took very good care of us and showed us the beautiful sides of the jungle! We highly recommend to do a jungle trekking with them :)

Trekking in the Sumatra Jungle was an amazing experience, especially due to the awesome people from Bukit Lawang Jungle Trekking. I cannot recommend this place enough! I needed to change my tour last minute because I was not feeling well and they adjusted everything according to my needs. The tour itself was great, we saw many different animals, also some Orangutans. Everyone was extremely friendly, caring and fun and made me feel safe during the trip. Special thanks to Andy :) hope to be back soon for a longer trekking! I also stayed in their guesthouse for 4 night which was a nice place to hang out, eat delicious food an meet people from all around the world.

I would like to thank to everyone from Bukit Lawang-Jungle Trekking and especially to our guides for having such a wonderful time in Bukit Lawang. I knew that it would be a big experience for us, but when I was planning our vacation in Indonesia, I didn't expect it to be as awesome as it was! Even though we spent some time in Bali (which is truly an amazing place), this jungle trek with your amazing guides, Didi and Martin, revealed itself as the true highlight of our stay and when I was reflecting about my stay in Indonesia with my boyfriend, we agreed both, that this was the best part of our vacation :) I'm truly thankful to our guides, who made our jungle trek a real adventure and they took such a good care of us! You are lucky to have such an amazing staff :) Didi was super fun person and with Martin we had a deep talk about life in Sumatra (and Bukit Lawang) and about his life. He even told us how hard it was to find a job where he could be happy and that you gave him the opportunity to work here as a guide. That's a very nice thing, because he is an amazing person :) We learned a lot from our guides and we wish them all the best! We will certainly talk about your agency to our friends and we will recommend them to do this trek :) So, thank you again, I hope you will have many tourists in the future, because not everyone takes such a perfect care of their customers as you guys do. BTW: I was afraid of what I will eat in the jungle, because I'm very picky about what I eat, but all the food, that our guides prepared to us was delicious and I never ate so much in my life, haha.

We have been trekking in the jungle with Bukit Lawang Jungle Trekking. Our guides - Didi and Faris - were just perfect! Expert, professional but also very warm and caring. The organization is flawless and full of surprises: comfort during the trekking and gourgeous dinner and breakfast at the camp. Seeing orang utan is something that cannot be described. Coming back down the river rafting was fun and relaxing after two days of trekking. The guesthouse is very very nice. We enjoied enourmously. Thank you!

Recommended by a friend and really glad we choose this trekking tour. We had a 3 day 2 night trek together with 2 other guys (in total 6 people, 2 guides and 4 tourist). We had an amazing time, saw loads of orang utang, other monkeys, animals, and beautiful nature. The guides, Didi and Wakka were amazing in looking after us, sharing tales about the forest and nature and spotting wild life. Would definitely recommend this tour company!

A must do experience! As a couple, we chose the 3D2N trekking tour through the Indonesian jungle. After a short briefing on the first day, we set off into the jungle of Bukit Lawang together with two great guides and four other participants. We were lucky enough to see orangutans, gibbons, macaques and other monkeys on the first day. During the trekking, the guides always had an open ear for us and were able to answer any questions about the plants and animals. We were also regularly provided with fruit and great tasting nasi goreng during the tour, so that we always had enough energy for the relatively demanding route. The first day ended in a small camp by a river. We were able to relax, swim in the water and spend the rest of the evening with our guides, who entertained us with a “magic show” after the tasty dinner. The second day consisted of a more challenging route through the deeper jungle. We were able to see orangutans, toucans and other animals again. It should be noted that the trekking tour leads over unpaved paths through the Indonesian jungle and is in parts dangerous. The second day ended in a slightly larger camp by a river, where we were provided with food and could regenerate in the evening. There were small covered huts in the camp in which we slept. On the last day, after a great breakfast and a trip to a small waterfall, we rafted back across the river to Bukit Lawang. We felt very safe and well looked after by our guides the entire time. They always paid attention, started breaks and constantly communicated with us to make the trekking as pleasant as possible. Thank you for this great experience.

Good experience trekking in the jungle and spotting wildlife with the help of our knowledgeable guides Nasir and Yakub! Will recommend a 2D1N for the experience of staying overnight in a jungle, but just note that you do not go out to find any wildlife or anything till 10 in the morning so don’t expect any trekking during dawn!

Life changing experience. 5 days in the jungle, it was honestly one of the best things I’ve done and I’ve been trekking all over. The tea lead by Pandi were incredible. I’d recommend this to absolutely everyone. 5 days is more physical than the 2 or 3 day but we saw the most wildlife on the 4th day. Best decision. If doing a 5 day get water shoes with straps rathe than flip flops.

I 100% recommend booking a tour with Bukit Lawang - Jungle Trekking. Really enjoyed our time with guide Andi! And on top of the good tours there's only good vibes in their restaurant Bukit Lawang Indah. Everyone there is so friendly, they make sure everyone (the tour guides & other tourist) connects with eachother. We ate and sang together as some of the tour guides play guitar. Having a good time is guaranteed here!

We had the most amazing experience on our 2 day / 1 night hike through the Sumatra jungle. Andy is the best guide with great storytelling skills, and good English, and Nasir's kindness and animal-searching skills were super helpful as well. We were lucky to have seen several Urang Oetans, gibbons, macacques, a horn bill and much more. Terima kasih for the new friendships and the one-in-a-lifetime experience!

Built in 2005, it features unique Indo-Mogul-style architecture, different from modern designs commonly used in churches. Visitors retreat to this serene and peaceful place to gain peace of mind and can enjoy the natural spring believed to have positive effects.
This magical church surprises because of his on of a kind building style. It really disliked my taste but this does not mean you can't enjoy it. The entrance is free but please wear appropriate clothes. (long and clean) There even is free parking in a lot on the other side of the street. Clean, unique, free and welcoming. You can't go wrong with the experience.

This is a really nice and peaceful place. You can look around and just sit in peace. Uodate on 7th October 2018- people weren't allowed to go up which was disappointing. There used to be wishing fountain but now I am not sure if people still throw the coins or no. There wasn't lights on like before. There is free candle provided inside the praying room so you don't need to buy candle from the shop. Just give money as offering.

Well preserved Chinese heritage in Medan. It’s a rather big house but it’s belong to a prominent rich tycoon at its time. The house is a typical Chinese with western influences. Good and interesting experience to walk and enjoy the old furniture and architecture. There’s a Rp35K or USD2,5 cover charge to enter.

When I paid for the ticket, the person asks if I speak English. I said yes but there wasnt any guide to bring me around, so I was kind of confused still.. the ticket mentions it’s a guided tour though 🤷‍♀️ when walking around the mansion, I saw 1 guide bringing a tourist around while speaking Indonesian. The place doesn’t have good ventilation and can get pretty hot. There also wasn’t much information about the decoratives/furniture in here 😅

A big yet very homely Peranakan style house with air wells and high ceilings and full of natural light everywhere. It is nice of the family to share and showcase their family house for all to appreciate and learn about the houses back then. Enjoyed the guided tour and the artifacts on display. We had the chance to meet one of the descendent and the sharing of some of the artifacts in the room gave it life. We arrived at 4pm which left us an hour to closing time, but it turn out to be a good choice, as we can see the house in a warmer light settings.

For you, lovers of cultural heritage....this is the right place to visit. This mansion is rich in historical relics of a blend of China, and Malay. Tjong A Fie himself is an immigrant from China, who had great success in his time to become the richest conglomerate in Sumatra. The mansion, which was built in 1895, was dedicated to his beloved wife, Madam Lim Koei Yap. we came here and got a tour guide offer, so we got a lot of information about Tjong A Fie's mansion and his family. there are lots of photo spots in this place, and the management of this mansion provides facilities for pre-wedding photos for a predetermined fee.

Located across the street from Tjong A Fie Mansion, Tip Top Restaurant is a long-standing establishment in Medan, dating back to 1934. This iconic restaurant features colonial-style architecture and offers a diverse menu of Indonesian and international cuisine. In addition to savory dishes, visitors can indulge in delectable cakes from the in-house bakery or enjoy ice cream from the parlor.
Service is fast despite full house. Food is good - chicken steak is crispy and peppery, nasi goreng had a zest of small shrimps, normally found in Singapore mee hoon. Fruit juice is fresh and refreshing. Environment is lively. Has AC and non AC seating areas. Non AC is a bit stuffy not to our liking. But Live bands entertained the guest in Non AC area. AC area is very comfortable. Staff is friendly and helpful with the menu and orders.

I guess they don't really take care the taste for ice creams and foods anymore. The omelette was literally telor dadar, so dry and not enough seasoning. Legendary restaurant! Tried the ice cream and it tasted like traditional sorbet ice cream instead of the creamy one. It tasted unique tho! The donut was quite surprising cause it was like 4 small balls with peanut inside which taste very yummy and savoury! Horen was great as well. Tarts were a bit too dry for me somehow. But the cake was so yummy, moist, and full of flavour. Definitely worth to try

The chilli not the extra spicy type, so it’s ok for chew and eat. The beef was a bit disappointed coz it’s was too thin and the black pepper sauce was not tasted good; need improvement for this meal. The beverage that we ordered was the sorbet, taste so so. Not my cup of tea. This shop famous due to the historical fact only.

4304 reviews today. Tip top restaurant is perhaps the oldest restaurant in Medan Town, it's building is artistic and historical style, built-in the days of the Dutch in Indonesia. There's another historical building just right across the street called Tjong Ah Fie. I don't read so much about Medan history, but I'm pretty sure this place was a place where people of those olden days came by for food and relaxing leisure time. I just couldn't imagine how and what kind of lifestyle people were living on that past long ago time. It must be fun, clean air, clean environment with lots of trees everywhere that produces more oxygen and convinced that time people were more friendly and caring. Yup, one of those days was the good old days. ❤️ God bless you all 🙏

Food and service were pretty good. Ordered the American steak. Was as thin and large as a McDonald's hamburger patty. I guess I was expecting something similar to a NY or porterhouse steak. Otherwise, pretty good. Just don't expect American style cooking. I've cream was good as well. They had live band in the front dining area.

Passed by and was intruiged, Chinese and Indonesian! Good Nasi Goreng Tip Top Special, Indo Nasi Goreng nd good Chinese chicken SUPER acar ketimun, I asked for extra! Has a shop with cakes etc, seems interesting too.

Guys, I was really looking forward to this. You have an original icon of a restaurant that has totally lost its way. The chicken soup was nice but that steak, it was really thin and way overcooked and the french fries, do you cook in palm oil? They were white with a horrible after taste. Also your gravy was very strange, it tasted half gravy and half mayonnaise. You really need to hire a Western Head chef. If you already have one then you need to fire them and get a new one. It really was the worst Western for I have had in Medan.

Tip Top Restaurants one of the legendary iconic place. No doubt the foods here is so good. Especially their mocca cake.. Love It!. The design, interior and furniture still looks the same. It's good to be back here.

The famous Nasi Goreng Special, I thought they serve the wrong one as the waiter said got prawn and chicken, finally I found the prawn! 😁 The live band very good too...

Cafe
The Thirty-Six is a cozy café located at Jalan Multatuli No. 36 in Medan, offering a simple yet stylish interior design with black and white tones and earthy furniture. One of its main attractions is the Italian-made La Pavoni espresso machine with four group heads, possibly the only one of its kind in Medan. The café has a European-style design and serves predominantly Western food.
Loveee the food! Everything tasted so good and the portion was alright. The beef salad was so good with the Thai peanut sauce, and the beef was so tender! The burger was so good as well. I love the spaghetti aglio e olio, the chilli one. There was 2 options either chilli or pesto sauce, but unfortunately the pesto was not available. But the chilli one was really good! Chicken quesadilla was cheesy and so tasty. You can taste dark chocolate in the choco mousse. Ambience was lovely and service was great. The little shop beside the cafe was cute and aesthetic as well
Winnie Felicia Gunawan — Google review
The Thirty-Six offers delicious culinary products. They offer mainly Western menu like sandwich, burger, steak, etc. But, they also have choices of Indonesia menu like fried rice. They also offer choices of coffee and non coffee beverages. Their oxtail fried rice and 36 Sandwich is delicious. Portion is adequate. Thirty-Six has numerous indoor and outdoor seats. It is quite crowded on meal hours. The crew members offer warm and hospitable service. Payment can be made by cash and electronic modes. Spacious parking slots are available in their compound.

• Taste : Were here for breakfast, there are 5 breakfast set which include hot tea/ hot coffee. My favorite is sausage+bun as always! • Price : breakfast set 55k/meal ;) • Place : cozy place to chat, open from 7:30, beautiful interior. Love this cafe so much.

The service is extremely slow with food taking up to an hour until it arrives. Ordered breakfast which took 50 min to arrive and a waffle which took 45 minutes. Not flexible with adjusting dishes to vegetarian either. Coffee is good and food is decent but the slow service really ruins it… the waffle came with ice cream that was already melted and refrozen. No manager to talk to. No responsibility from staff to change things when what they serve is simply bad. Came twice and had the same experience. If I can give zero star, I will definitely choose it for this expensive but not worth it restaurant!

I ordered carbonara chicken and it was delicious. However, the bread that came with it was too hard to bite. The pizza I ordered was also mid at best. They made up with the great ambiance of the place and the friendly staff.

So far, everything is good. I feel comfort the moment i sat down, specially the outdoor spot, my fave spot. Thank you for the (good things) 36. Keep up the good work.

The place is buzzing with the locals, if you didn't make a booking you are most likely have to wait or share a table with others. The menu is more western dishes, pasta, pizza, Buritos, and the like. On the day I visited, they ran out of pizza, not sure why, but even I can make it from scratch. probably running out of the pre-prepared ones, so we have to settle with others.

Wow! Stumbled in here very tired after a long travel day and the food was incredible. Staff was very nice and the coffee was one of the best I’ve had. Will be back (maybe for dinner) 10/10

Best coffee in town. Western food, descent kitchen produce the food and bake their own baking stuff like bread, sourdough and some cakes.

One of the best place in medan city, This place have great menu for breakfast, I tried breakfast with brioche french toast accompanied by a cup of warm capuccino. The coffee beans used are too sour for me, but they are still delicious combined with the steamed milk. The toast is complete with bananas, strawberries, dried dates and grapes, the bread is quite thick, but using too much caramel sauce makes the taste of the toast masked and the taste is too sweet. But overall this place has an attractive atmosphere for breakfast or just meeting colleagues. The staff are humble, they help me when they look i find the power outlet, they help before i ask them.

Open 24 hours a day, this cozy and aesthetically pleasing establishment provides a perfect spot for capturing Instagram-worthy moments while satisfying one's cravings. With various types of durians available, patrons can indulge in both sweet and bitter varieties.
Great durian place, better than the **** with representable and friendly staff, however they keep refusing when i ask and wanted to order the sidikalang ones, was it because it is cheap or it ia not good? If it is not good then why sibolang is put it on the menu?such ashame

Pretty big establishment here. A good place for foreigners who can’t speak the local language and just want to try out the durians. Cozy and nice set up. The durians are local and mostly sweet bitter. The seed is large. Overall good experience but pricey.

New concept of durian store. Very clean and we can customizer order of durian by our preference. The durian also quite complete, also provide drink and snacks. However live music too loud.
Fasa Aditya — Google review
This durian haven offers a variety of fresh durians, perfect for satisfying any durian craving. The ambiance is cozy and inviting, with live music adding to the delightful atmosphere. We visited on a weekday night and found it moderately crowded, with plenty of seating available. The knowledgeable staff helped us choose the perfect durian based on our preference for sweet and bitter flavors. All the durians we tried were fantastic - incredibly buttery, fragrant, and bursting with both sweet and bitter notes. Just a heads up, service might be a bit slower during peak times due to the limited number of staff compared to the crowd. Overall, despite the slight wait time, the quality of the durian, cozy ambiance, and live music make this a great spot for durian enthusiasts!

They have the best packaging method for take away of durian by airplane (with 30k IDR additional charge). So that in the airport you don’t need to wrap the pack. Reasonable price for dining in. There are 2 options for take away, premium and promo.

We were amazed when we reached this place. There were plenty of durians to choose from. We ordered two type of durian: sweet and bitter taste. Both durian were very good. Truly enjoyed the durian here.

My first visit here and I had the durian chendol. The menu had a fantastic variety of durian-based dishes, catering to both seasoned durian enthusiasts and those looking to explore the unique flavors for the first time. Whether you're a durian connoisseur or a curious foodie, there's something for everyone here. The pricing was reasonable considering the quality and freshness of the durian. Sibolang Durian is not just a cafe; it's a haven for durian lovers seeking an elevated dining experience.

Coming here just in time of the durian season. Outdoor cafe type. Just sit and ask for the durian to the server according to your liking: sweet or slightly bitter one. If you dont like it they will change. Open 24h. More clean than the competitor.

Who doesn’t know this place? Mostly…”durian lovers” know this place. “Si Bolang”…the famous place for “durian lovers” in Medan. This place is nicely arranged..big area…with live music..nice place to hangout with friends. We can order not only “durian”, but any other snack. The waiters are helpfull..in selecting good durian, split it at any time we need. For “durian lovers”…must try this.
Made Sumiarsih — Google review
Firstly, the choices of durians are very limited. The staff cheated us by saying they only have musang king durian. But when we ordered cendol durian, the durian they used was a local durian. We as Malaysians can identify the differences between a local durian and a musang king. When we ordered some musang kings to dine in,it was local durians. We were devastated by this! Not only that, the price is damn expensive.
John Smith — Google review
This place sell different kind of durians. The place was cozy, pretty and there was live music when we came. We came here on weekday around 10:30 PM, few tables were occupied but there were still many available tables. The employee asked our preference and we told him we would like to taste the sweet and bitter ones. Turned out all the durians were fantastic, they were very buttery, fragrant, with sweet and bitter taste. The only minus was they were expensive. Last time we bought three local durians for almost Rp 500k.
Vivi Tanato — Google review
The atmosphere is good for chill and staff when we dine in friendly. But when we want to take away the staff very very not friendly. When we try it so many durian not good so we ask to them and they ask because you already eat in here and your expectacion can not be same. They want me to lower the taste. Please correction your staff..

Food poisoning after Is Kendol. The durian pieces were obviously brown and had a rotten sour taste. When we complained a) they didn't speak English and b) they pretended it has to be like this, implying a foreigner (who lives in South East Asia) can't tell a fresh proper durian from an old rotten one. Tonight I had the worst diarrhoea, nausea and Vomiting experience of my life. There is other durian places around with better quality and cheaper rate - like Ucok. This place is just for atmosphere
Sou Matra — Google review
As a Malaysian tourist, I enjoyed the durian eating experience here. The service was great. One could request for preference for the durian taste and size. I chose bitter sweet taste. It was pretty good. Then we had a sweet one. It was very good. The waitresses helped to cut the fruit and were very pleasant. Prices were expensive as usual.

Food court
Merdeka Walk is a popular modern food court in Medan City, known for its diverse culinary offerings and vibrant atmosphere. It's a great spot for families to hang out, though it can get crowded, making parking a challenge. The place comes alive at night with beautiful lighting and offers a view of old architectural buildings while you dine. With its clean sidewalks and pick-up points for online vehicles, it's an ideal location to enjoy global cuisine and local delicacies with loved ones.
Modern and lively ambience in the heart of Medan. Many big restaurants and coffee shops. Also many lights under the trees. The guests chairs are being put both indoor and outdoor area. The sidewalk is clean. There are pick up and drop off points for online vehicles. A good place to spend quality time with family and friends.
Retta Sinambela — Google review
Too crowded. It truly felt like a battle royale, except it's happening every night. Foods are overpriced and overhyped, and the drinks are even more so. The only saving grace is the huge amount of pokestops and gyms for playing Pokemon Go. If you're considering hanging out here for a good night out with your friends, don't. There are much better and cheaper alternatives around in the area.
Lando Fortericho — Google review
Well known for hangout in Medan City. Good place for family. Because of its well known, many people come here and make it crowded, sometimes it is kinda difficult to find parking space if you get there by car. So I recommend you using public transport or at least motorbike. You can enjoy lunch or dinner here, but I recommend you to come here at night because they have beautiful lighting. Around there, you can enjoy the view of building with old architecture while enjoying your food.

A lovely row of coffee shops and restaurants under the trees (or indoors) along the main road. As first time tourists we found the place from Google Maps and enjoyed dinner outside, with a cold beer! At night though, take insect repellant. Probably a great spot for a morning coffee or catch up with friends.

Nice place to enjoy your free time with doing sports in the morning. You can do jogging, yoga, aerobic, or gym with the equipment around here. You can also find many types of food here, we call it jajanan. The famous one is egg-sausage, baked meatballs, and many else. In the night, especially Saturday night, the atmosphere is really crowded of people that hanging out with friends or families. They choose restaurant in Merdeka Walk because it's located strategically near Centre Point and another big place.

Good place to hang out with friends for dinner. There's a big park nearby so one can just walk around or play or do nothing at Al. As for food, there's nothing special for the place. You will find all of the restaurants on various parts of Medan.

Awesome little oasis in ugly Medan. We were so happy that friends recommended the place. Nice atmosphere to hang out and get really great food. The flavours have been exceptionally balanced, textures added to your dishes. Everything was well prepared and cooked with love. This restaurant visit was our highlight of 3 days Medan. Wide range collection of good quality books! Nice vibe, especially to sit, relax, ease your mind. The owner has great taste in arts. The whole area is so inspiring in its own way. I came when the restaurant actually is closed that day (Tuesday), but the owner saw me when I arrived and let me in to sit for a while. The owner also owns a theater and a piano club. He’s a kind soul. The whole place is so mesmerizing!

Very good all vegan food set in a nice decor. Tip: try the 'pecel', vegetables with chunky peanut sauce (even better than gado gado) The place is filled with an extensive book collection and interesting objects. We had a very pleasant conversation with the friendly owner, who even gave us some suggestions for our further travels in Sumatra.

Do yourself a favor and visit this cozy restaurant. Its located right in the center of the city and has left the best impressions. The ambiance is very welcoming and charming. The interior is sooo nice with several bookshelves and has a dim light nuance. They have hundreds of books; politics, novels, inspirational, philosophy, encyclopedia, tourism, even manga. Bookshelves are available in both first and second floor. The owner is very friendly and knowledgeable, I remember the first time I eat here, he and his wife were so friendly sharing their knowledge about vegetarian food and make great recommendations. Ah and plus, they speak english very well.
