St. Basil's Cathedral

Cathedral
Sights & Landmarks
The cathedral of St. Basil is a 16th-century former cathedral that now contains a museum of the church. The cathedral is beautifully designed and features colorful domes. It is a popular tourist destination and can be found in the center of Moscow.
I walked from Borovitskaya metro station on the grey line 9, skirted the Kremlin along the banks of the Moscow river before ending up at St Basil’s on the edge of Red Square. It was a truly breathtaking sight to see it in the flesh. Unfortunately I did not have an opportunity to go inside. A very special place where there are so many fascinating buildings and statues to see.

I'm grateful to visit this cathedral because it has a lot of historical stories under this beautiful architecture which I rate as top of the world.

The cathedral's history and architecture make it a must-see attraction for anyone visiting Moscow. Its location in Red Square makes it easily accessible and convenient to visit. Its unique design and stunning interior make it a memorable experience for all who visit.

A really beautiful place as on the outside as also on the inside! The Cathedral was build around 1500's. The awesome part is that you can go INSIDE the Cathedral, can get an audio-guide to listen about all the artifacts there, just as take pictures with and without flash! Because it is not an "active" Cathedral - rather a museum- you have to pay for the tickets to get in. The main theme of the Cathedral is obviously Christian Religion. But let me tell you - it is BEAUTIFUL! Knowing that the place is old, that Russian Zars were going there to worship is really amazing! People who go there are tourists, so it is normal to hear English, German, Spanish. The workers are really sweet and nice, always trying to help and navigate you. You can get a lot of cool pictures there!

St. Basil's Cathedral in Moscow Visited on 5/10/2019 Any tourist comes to Moscow must not miss visiting St. Basil's Cathedral. It is an Orthodox church in Red Square near the Kremlin. St. Basil's is a cluster of buildings - a central church surrounded by nine auxiliary churches, eight dedicated to Ivan's eight victories over the Tatars. The cathedral’s original colour was said to be white to match the white stone of the Kremlin, while the domes were gold. In the 17th century, the façade and domes began to be painted in multi-colours like what are today. They look very "cute" to say the least. The Red Square is big, but mist of the visitors gather around the section near the St Basil's Cathedral to have a memorable snap shot. The building is now a museum, but my wife's and my nain objective is have close encounter of this unique architecture in the world. I encourage those who can spare more time, do explore the interior and the museum.

At Christmas they use new decorations at St basil’s cathedral. The red square is really close to it. There are many restaurants near this cathedral. The inside has old arts and paintings. It is near to the most known shopping mall in moscow “gym”.

Absolutely stunning exterior and well preserved interior (and artifacts). About £10 each to get in - you can get a free COVID test at the GUM across the road which allows you to enter as a foreigner. (Top floor of the GUM - you can't miss it). English and also Russian text descriptions of everything.

A must see stop for a traveler inside and outside. Carrying cultural and religious significance this place is a great historical monument. Nothing compares to the expirience of walking through the narrow hallways and larger open chapels within or seeing the marvelous architecture from the outside. Beautiful by day and night!

Just magnificent! Gorgeous and beautiful. You just have to see it with your own eyes. The cathedral has been a historical and tourist attraction. From afar it is iconic to be seen from red square and the amazing view. Everyone who have been to Moscow knows about this cathedral. One of many great cathedrals in Russia. St.Basil's Cathedral is the iconic image of Red Square and rightly so. If you climb the steep stairs to the top of the central tower there is a small Nave. On the day I visited I had the good fortune to see the monks chanting a prayer which everyone stopped to listen to. The chant reverberated round the central dome and sounded magnificent. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐👍

Dom-Muzey V.m. Vasnetsova

History Museums
The Dom-Muzey V.m. Vasnetsova is a hidden gem of an art museum that showcases authentic Russian architecture from the past 1,000 years. Visitors can admire early religious paintings and modern art, including breathtaking fairytale paintings by one of Russia's best painters. This painter played a vital role in promoting Russian culture through his work.
This was a place I'd have never discovered on my own. It was located at the centre of the city but slightly hard to find. My friend took me there and I was honestly less than excited about it but I tagged along. I found potraits of different people and although they were good I didn't get a sense of wonder or awe. I found the woodwork by his brother to be more detailed and really well made. This was all until I went upstairs which is where I was witness to the brilliance of this man named Vasnetsov. The whole room was filled with large paintings that are scenes from Russian folklore. The audio information provided may not be the most captivating but it is informative and interesting. Some of his works were utterly brilliant. Through imagining a scene in a certain way and placing the various conjured characters perfectly coordinating with the rest of the story, this person has brought a new dimension to this form of art. Loved the experience and it was inspiring. The museum also requires more funding in my opinion.
Megha Venugopal — Google review
One of the best Russian painters, he did a lot to promote Russian culture. His paintings of Russian folklore stories are absolutely amazing.
Nataliya Lev — Google review
The two-story building, built at the end of the 19th century, is recognized as an architectural monument. Vasnetsov's drawings formed the basis of the architectural project. Residents of the capital affectionately call the house-museum "Teremok" for the exterior decor in the neo-Russian style - a combination of modern and old Russian traditional style with details from northern architecture. Different parts of the house have different styles. So, the living room looks like a boyar room of the 17th century, while the dining room resembles a peasant's house. On the first floor, which was residential, there were rooms for the Vasnetsov family, a dining room and a living room. It was here that the so-called "Vasnetsov Wednesdays" gathered, which were attended by the entire Moscow intelligentsia. The Vasnetsov Memorial Museum was opened in his house in 1953 at the initiative of the heirs, who transferred the building to state control. Since 1986, the Vasnetsov House Museum in Moscow has been part of the State Tretyakov Gallery museum association.

Art museum
The State Tretyakov Gallery is a museum in Moscow, Russia, which has the largest collection of Russian art in the world. It was built using beautiful red and white colors from classical Russian architecture, and it houses significant art pieces dating back to the 15th century.
The State Tretyakov Gallery Visited on 8/10/2019 In front of The State Tretyakov Gallery stands the statue of Pavel Mikhailovich Tretyakov, a Moscow merchant who acquired the works by Russian artists of his day. His collection of about 2000 works was later presented to the city of Moscow as a gift. The Tretyakov family acquired this house where The State Tretyakov Gallery is standing. As Tretyakov's collection grew, more and more extensions were added to the original house. The State Tretyakov Gallery is now an art gallery, houses an exposition of Russian art of the 12th - early 20th century. It occupies 62 rooms on two floors. The collection contains more than 130,000 exhibits. Although I am not an artist or art enthusiast, I cannot deny that I am very impressed by the paintings, some are gigantic in size, depicting portraits of prominent figures of Russian culture.
Sin Fong Chan — Google review
A very big gallery with great artwork (if you're a fan of it). You need at least a couple of hours to see all of it. The ticket is 500 rubbles for adults. But I'd recommend the Shimov gallery. Much more impressive.

(Translated by Google) During the day, there are many people around the popular and famous paintings, so it is difficult to appreciate them, so it is better to go right after the opening hours. It's not as large as the Hermitage Museum, so it's not enough to research the location of the paintings you want to see in advance, but it's fairly large, so be sure to get a map of the museum when you enter. If you have that, there are staff in each room, so you can ask them where you are or how to get to the room with the picture you want to see. Most of the staff speak only Russian, but if you have Google Translate and a map, you can communicate, and even if you don't speak Russian, they will gladly help you.

What an amazing memorable place when i went in i wasn't sure of the amount of beautiful Art present at this gallery my original plan was to spend couple of hours only but i ended up being mesmerized and deeply lost in the beautiful paintings and lost track of time. Below you can see some of my favorite paintings at the gallery. I would highly recommending this place if you are Art lover like me.

Obviously it was raining and cold when we were waiting in line to get in (we visited Russia in fall). There were a lot of tourists and guide groups inside as it is a famous place. Basically, if you know something about paintings, art, or History - you will find at least one paining you are familiar with. Take a guided group obviously so you know what's where and learn something new and interesting. Some paintings are as old as from 1100's all the way till now modern time.
Maksim Krigmant — Google review
There are some points which must precisely be considered. 1) It is a MUST to go there in the morning, unless you cannot cover all its parts. 2) You definitely need to have an English map to figure out how the gallery has been organized. 3) Do not miss any part. If you are in short of time or sth else, plan to come again. The gallery is really a dynamic ocean of art.

Stunning museum featuring all Russian painters! I usually get bored at museums but I found myself absorbed into all the paintings and went to every room here!

It has day off on Monday. They close at 21 but it has a lot of arts in there so if you want to look around all you should visit early for looking all of them. If you visit Moscow then you have to visit here. It will take almost 4-5 hours to look around normally. You should check it. The entrance price 400 ruble as i remember with this price can enjoy the art? There is no reason to not visit here.

It is one of the most outstanding Russian monastery of 16 century. Unfortunately, it has been brought into a poor state be commy-coop in 1917, and remained in that state for all 70 years under communist rule. Therefore, now it takes years, if not decades, to restore immense treasures in it, such as icons of 16 century and on, frescoes all over the walls and ceiling, altar, and most of the structures inside the the cathedral, monastery walls and walls themselves. Most of the central cathedral and it's yard is closed to public and eyes, inside and outside.

Overall this place is getting a five star even though the particular dish I ordered what's it like out there wasn't stunning but it was still pretty good. The big thing for me is the environment and the service and violinist and harpists. It takes you back to a very different time and makes you feel like you're royalty enjoying a dinner at court.

Nice atmosphere, so quite and peaceful place, and the waiter was glad to serve us. I ordered a crepe with sour cream and berries, it was so tasty !!

The cafe offers a nostalgic journey with its historical ambiance, though our experience was tempered by a bit of a slowdown in service. The beautifully designed surroundings exude an old world charm, providing a unique atmosphere. The menu features a nice array of options from Russian cuisine. Our choice of the honey cake was okay, not quite reaching the heights of expectation. On the other hand, the Napoleon cake was a standout, delivering delightful flavors that surpassed our hopes. It's worth noting that the service was a bit slow, which slightly affected the overall experience. The coffee, a well paired companion to the desserts, was enjoyable. Despite the varied dessert experience and service pace, Cafe Pushkin remains a decent choice for those seeking history and sweetness.

A nice and chique restaurant with a rich history located near Pushkin Square. Ambiance and location is ofcourse fantastic. Food is good too like in all 4+ star restaurants in Russia. On a more negative note you Really notice the difference if you are with locals or only with foreigners visiting this restaurant. Let me give you an example: I have been here many, many times and when I am here with locals the service is much better. When I am alone or with business partners, they default place us on the ground floor and not in the library l, second floor. Also the borsch is serviced without bread and cream (duhhhhhh) why is that?!? This didn’t happened to me when I visited it with locals, too bad…. Last time I was here service level was much higher, that’s why I have a 4 star! Shout out to the live music players , violins and harp, excellent!!!!!!!

Had a dinner here with my daughter couple of nights ago. We were greeted by an unfriendly hostess and led to a table in an isolated and absolutely empty part of the restaurant where we remained alone through the rest of the evening. Our table’s view was blocked by a decorative sculpture outside. We were offered a seating at the bar table along the window with a view but found that inappropriate. There were tables for 4 with a view all empty and it would’ve been nice if we were offered to sit there. We were asked to open the menu on a phone. The food was good but nothing special. My daughter ordered a salad and asked for a dressing on the side - it came drenched in dressing. Will not return or recommend this place.

I don't think there is anyone who was in this restaurant and could leave without wanting to return. Fantastic atmosphere from the times of the Soviet Union. The authors recreated everything, down to the asterisk on the lapel of the waiters. The portions are very large, so to touch the chicken was complicated, but we took it with us. It was delightful. The Pozharskaya cutlet was juicy inside and crispy outside. Dumplings, vareniki and pancakes - everything, absolutely everything is very tasty with a beautiful presentation and well-trained waiters. I had an absolutely wonderful experience at Grand Cafe Dr. Zhivago! The atmosphere was elegant and sophisticated, the service was impeccable, and the food was simply divine. I started with the Moscow-style borscht, which was hearty and flavorful, with just the right amount of tanginess from the beets and a rich beef broth. For my main course, I had the pelee stuffed with carp, a traditional Russian dish that was both savory and satisfying. The pelee was cooked to perfection, with a flaky crust and a moist, flavorful filling. The carp was also cooked perfectly, with a delicate flavor that complemented the pelee. And for dessert, I couldn't resist trying the black caviar, a luxurious and decadent treat that is often served as an appetizer. The caviar was perfectly salty and briny, and it melted in my mouth. Our waiter was attentive and knowledgeable, and he made sure to recommend the perfect dishes for our taste. He also helped us pair our meal with a delicious Russian wine. Overall, I had an unforgettable dining experience at Grand Cafe Dr. Zhivago. I highly recommend this restaurant to anyone looking for a truly special occasion

Excellent food and nice atmosphere. Absolutely loved the stroganoff and Siberian dumplings. Also the serving size was good, so that you don’t feel robbed like in some places. Would recommend and definitely would return :)

Starting off with the group of ladies who were on the reception, they were so impolite and rude as they were laughing at us when we asked them if the could speak English and about our reservation. “They were laughing in a loud voice”. We were seated after that, and the worst experience starts then. The waitress who served us was ARROGANT , RUDE, and I believe she didn’t want to serve us. I won’t mention her name to respect her privacy although I could if I wanted. Although we were so respectful when we asked for whatever we wanted. She literally ignored us when we were calling her. She was also serving another table who were (not tourist) and her smile didn’t part her face! The breakfast meals were the worst ever, but I won’t consider that because everyone has a different taste. She brought a meal that we didn’t order , and when we wanted to explain that’s it’s not what we have ordered, her tone changed and she said that she understands that it’s wrong and she will get the right meal. After all that, we decided to leave and not wait for our other meals. We asked for the receipt and her facial expression changed and she went mad. The waitress was literally RUDE. We are familiar with good service and restaurants so we are not in need to go to any other place that doesn’t respect us when we do respect the other party. We visit the restaurant by our choice and we attend respectfully and we PAY for our meals not the waitress nor the manager nor the chef pays for our meals, so we expect the bear minimum of respect. ‎جماعة لحد يسير المطعم لان خدمتهم زفتة و رافعين خشومهم على ولا شي Apologies not accepted and be sure that this review will be passed over to others.

I simply love this place: the food, service, atmosphere and location. Till now this place has very good reputation. It’s quite busy so it’s better to book a table in advance. Had breakfast there with my best friend and definitely will come back again🫶

Beautiful a d pleasant atmosphere. Delicious food. A must to go place while in Moscow. The blueberry cake is not to be missed. Also, the Napoleon cake is so delicious. Quite busy so service could be disjointed.

I trusted all the other reviews about the blueberry cake and napoleon, and I don't regret a single bit of my decision. The napoleon was the best I had in Russia, and the *blueberry cake* is A MUST TRY‼️It's very soft and delicate yet crunchy, ultra refreshing and perfectly sweet🤭 I never had anything like this before. The waiting was really long just for two cakes (20 minutes) but their tastes forgive the waiting xD The price is also reasonable for such an amazing and delicious taste :)

Had a great time in this very authentic soviet spirit atmosphere restaurant. Exceedingly wide range of delicious dishes. Positive and responsive staff. Lovely music from 70-the 80s, incredible views of Kremlin, and definitely the best tarhun drink I've ever had.

If you're looking for a cheap and simple meal in the heart of Red Square, Stolovaya 57 is the place to go. They serve Russian classics like pelmeny (dumplings) and zapekanka (a casserole) in accordance with government standards of quality.
I believe ALL TOURISTS must visit this cafe Stolovaya 57 inside GUM Mall, in the Red Square Oh yea I realize the price is also a bit touristy. Which is normal. But the experience to have this kind of buffet, and try all the Russian local dishes, and drinks, is the only thing you need after a visit to the Kremlin The place is so clean and luxurious. They speak English too little but you can find all the English name (and price) on each tag. So just take everything that attracts you and pay at the end of the line. I can say almost everything taste good!! My personal favorite: - borscht (well its a must) - fried cutlets. Any of them - all of the salads are great - cranberry drink - the creamy mushroom sauce. OH MY GOD

The price is a bit expensive and the taste is average. A lot of local people eat in here, everything in No.57 like the worker’s canteen in USSR. If you are a tourist, is a place worth for you to visit and have a lunch. However, be careful you need to wait in a long queue! And although here in the centre of Moscow and Russia, the staff of the No.57 can not speak English, they just speak Russian.

Afforable soviet kitchen. I suggest chicken products, salats and makaroni. Others are a bit weird for me. I didn't like pickles, I don't suggest.

I cannot describe how happy I am to have discovered this place!! Who would have thought that in a fancy mall with lots of couture brands you can find a modest and so worth place like this to eat?! I'm fascinated; decent prices, good options and literally fabulous food! Super tasty Russian food, the place is also kept clean all the time. I was eating there every day, it's too affordable and too good!

Yeah, food is decent, wouldn't really suprize you much, what you are really here for is for the experience, to experience the soviet dinning halls and capture the whole atmosphere, the whole key of the place it's located "GUM" is that no matter how much time goes, it never gets old or outdated, always remains it's own significance. Well, okay, maybe something has changed - the crowdedness

Affordable place for breakfast or Lunch, got me a two course meal with drink for 375 Roubles. Current photos of the menu are still valid having checked it when I arrived. Very busy during lunch periods though so queuing is likely. Remember comrades to clean up after yourself 😁
