Savior on the Spilled Blood

Mentioned on
Church
Sights & Landmarks
This is a multicolored church that was designed in traditional Russian medieval style. It took over 20 years to be completed and it features 7,500 square meters of mosaics on the walls and ceilings. The building is impressive for its strict architecture, but it seems like a toy from afar due to its bright colors.
Cathedral On the Spilled Blood, Saint petersburg This place is one of the main center of Russian orthodox Christianity. The orthodox Christianity is bit different from roman catholics. Different rituals, different patriach and different design of church. This cathedral is one of the most cathedrals in the world. The decorations both inside and out are beyond anyone's imagination. The mosiac walls are common in middle eastern churches but it's interesting to see this art reached far north in russia. Its very interesting to how they make an image with small stones of different colors. Its a pain staking job and the final result is breathtaking.this is something like pixels on lcd screens. Origins of orthodox Christianity is in Israel (Infact Judaism, Christianity, Islam all have roots in jerusalem) then to holy roman empire in istanbul and eventually found its way to Russia. My effort to capture the beauty and detail with a mere mobile phone is definitely futile as nothing can compensate the beauty of this place but the human eye.

A historical, beautiful and must visit place whenever you're in Saint Petersburg as a tourist or just for the day trip. It's not too crowded on weekdays.

One of the most beautiful churches in the world. Audioguide is available for a small extra charge (2.5 EUR), however fully worth it to get to know the story why this church was build and what the purpose is of the interior
Chirag Bhoraniya — Google review
Excellent facade of the church which was grand and exquisite. Unfortunately the church was not open to visitors at the time of visit. The church was erected on the site where political nihilists assassinated Emperor Alexander II in March 1881 and that gave rise to the name of the church
CK Cheong — Google review
As this Church much reminds on St. Basil's in Moscow it's not that old (neither is St. Pet as a city), but it has a very interesting history and breathtaking interiors which make it a must visit site. History facts: - it was built in 1883 to commemorate the place of Tsar Alexander II assassination in 1881 - therefore "spilled blood", - the Romanov imperial family funded the project, - in order to house the exact place of assassination inside the Church, they narrowed the canal, - after the 1917 Revolution overthrowing the Imperial regime, it was looted and semi-destroyed, - WWII and Leningrad siege brought further destroy and it was turned into a morgue, - after WWII Communist regime banned Church services likewise in all Russia, making it a warehouse, - it was rebuilt during the 90's and reopened in 1997 - toady it's not a working Church, but the world's biggest mosaic museum with over 7.500 sqm of amazing artwork. - photography is allowed, entry fee around 8$

The exterior is incredible. It fits that Russian Orthodox look that is so iconic. Truly a beautiful work with great architecture. The interior was... eh? Very crowded, there wasn't much successful work done to preserve the walls and ceilings. It is sad honestly.

i visited this church in happier times. Built on the spot of the bombing assignation of Alexander II. Construction began two years after the assassination in 1883 and was complete in 1907. Although not very old (even by American standards) the church is breathtaking and an important place in orthodox Christianity.

Peterhof was unbelievable. Some of my friend told me to visit this place. I was in business trip in Sankt-Petersburg and on my first free day I catch up a ship to taxi here. We walked around more than 10 kilometers. You can feel the nature here. Must visit if you are in Sankt-Petersburg believe me. There was holiday in Russia so there are so many people but they were calm. I fall in love here. 🥰🥹🇷🇺

This was one of the worst trip, this was during winter time everything was covered in snow and as expected not a lot of tourists were there. I took a ticket to the museum, the lady who took my belongings was mocking me in Russian. I felt really uncomfortable and unwelcome there. So I ignored and went ahead anyways, there were just 2 guided tours. So no rush of tourists, still they would come to specifically to hurry up and move ahead. One of the lady even told me do not stop and go towards exit!!!!!Absolutely ridiculous. At least let me read what am I standing in front of. Waste of money and waste of time.

The Peterhof Palace and Gardens, located just outside St. Petersburg, Russia, are a testament to the grandeur of Russian imperial architecture and landscaping. As a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Peterhof complex offers visitors a glimpse into the opulent lifestyle of Russia's tsars. The palace itself is a stunning example of Baroque and Neoclassical architecture, adorned with intricate details and gilded decorations. Inside, visitors can explore lavishly decorated rooms filled with historical artifacts and artwork, providing insight into Russia's rich cultural heritage. However, the true highlight of Peterhof lies in its magnificent gardens and fountains. Designed by renowned architects and landscapers, the sprawling gardens feature meticulously manicured lawns, vibrant flower beds, and a network of cascading fountains. Whether strolling along the pathways lined with statues and sculptures or marveling at the synchronized water displays, visitors are sure to be captivated by the sheer grandeur of this historical masterpiece. In conclusion, a visit to the Peterhof Palace and Gardens is a must for anyone interested in Russian history, architecture, and landscape design. Its beauty and magnificence leave a lasting impression on all who have the privilege to experience it firsthand.

Amazing place, Official tour in 2016;One of the most important sites of cultural importance in Russia is the Peterhof Palace. It is a series of palaces and gardens which are located in Peterhof, St Petersburg. One of the best features of the area that catches the eyes of the many tourists who come to visit the area is a 16-metre high cliff. One of the best features of the Palace is the Chesma Hall. The Hall is decorated with painting from the Battle of Chesma, where Russia won a naval victory during the Russo-Turkish war.

One of the must-sees in St Peterburg. The Peterhof Palace is stunning, magnificent and majestic externally and astonishing, grand and remarkable in the intricacies and opulence internally. In addition, the well manicured gardens accompanied by the hundreds of exquisite fountains are definitely worth a visit

Peterhof Palace, often dubbed the "Russian Versailles," is a mesmerizing testament to opulence and grandeur. The sprawling palace complex, with its meticulously manicured gardens and glistening fountains, is an architectural marvel that never ceases to amaze. Its sheer scale and beauty are boundless, offering visitors an enchanting glimpse into Russia's imperial past. One of the palace's standout features is its accessibility. The easy commute from the city center allows for a seamless transition into this world of regal splendor. The journey is well worth it, as every corner of Peterhof holds a new marvel to discover. When planning a visit, it's worth noting that there are different tickets for the upper and lower gardens, the palace itself, and Alexander Park. To maximize your experience, consider taking the little train to access Alexander Park. This charming ride not only adds a touch of whimsy to your visit but also allows you to navigate the park effortlessly, ensuring you make the most of your time. Peterhof Palace is a quintessential Russian treasure, offering an unparalleled blend of architectural brilliance, natural beauty, and historical significance. It's a must-visit for anyone seeking to immerse themselves in the splendor of Russia's imperial past. Be prepared to be captivated by its allure, leaving you with memories to cherish for a lifetime.

Beautiful place which is just 30 min away from the city. There are plenty of food spots inside, and the view on the Gulf of Finland is nice. Highly recommend to purchase entry tickets online to avoid the queues. The park is so lovely in autumn!

I visited Peterhof during a rainy summer day. When visiting Russia pay heed to the fact that Russia has rainy summers, not that sunny as one may expect. I take my hat off to this well preserved palace! Everywhere you look one can spot glittery statues, breathtaking fountains lavish salons, and so on. I’ve visited many European palaces, however, I must say they pale into comparison with the Russian ones. Getting there may not prove easy depending on the weather. We took the hydrofoil which you can find just on the banks of the Neva River, right behind The Winter Palace. It’s worth taking it, but, in our case the service stopped on our way back due to the heavy rain and wind. Plan ahead second routes should you end up being affected by unexpected weather conditions. Visiting the palaces requires paying at least three tickets. You may decide the sections from the palace you wish to see and wonder about. If possible purchase your tickets prior to your visit as the lines may be quite long and you may end up making a time consuming line under the rain or the bad weather. May you be lucky as to be there on a bright day, do share your beautiful pictures. On the bright side, one can bump into many squirrels mingling with the crowds; they love being given treats, have fun with them !

The Hermitage Museum is the largest and oldest museum in Russia, housing an immense collection of art spanning from ancient Greece and Rome to contemporary times. It's a popular tourist destination, with queues often stretching down the street, but is well worth the wait.
You have to take a few days to see everything on the Museum, it is huge! It is not by chance that the people took power in the past, the palace is huge and very incredible, with a wealth of details. I strongly recommend the visitation, just includ in your tourists plans and go!

It is the best museum in the world. I was there 4 days. But you need 3 months to see all. Painting is like magical. You can not stop looking. I can say the best experience I had.

Perfect for spending a cold winter day indoors, immersed in art and history! The tickets can be purchased online. Need separate tickets for separate buildings though... Or a combined ticket for the whole complex. Excellent service, old ladies sitting on chairs in the corners of various halls are very helpful. Lavatories are very clean, the Hermitage Cafe is a bit pricey, which is normal. The gift shop has a wide variety of products related to the museum and the art. But you need literally 10 years to enjoy each and every one of the art pieces exhibited at the Hermitage, so wear comfortable shoes! 😁
Daria Or — Google review
We visited the Hermitage just because it is one of the most known places in the world. It is truly grandiose, though. The exhibition is marvelous and everything is organized. It is very hard to find parking there, and we had to drive around for a long time to finally snatch a spot, so make sure to arrive earlier before your time to go in. Buying tickets online was super easy and the website in general is very website user-friendly.

One of the largest museums in the world, if not the largest one. There are collections from all over the world from ancient times to modern. It takes at least 3-4 hours just to finish the ground floor to the full, even if you skip some of the exhibition rooms just taking a quick glance. It's worth coming to St. Petersburg just to visit here. Magnificent!

Came as early as 1000H, and we waited til 1100H before acquiring a ticket. It is recommended to have a ticket in advance. The museum is enormous. We only lasted 1 hour inside due to sensory and information overload. 🤦🏼‍♂️😂 The toilets are located on the ground floor only.

This is the very first place we visited when we were in Russia. I saw a mummy here. I remember thinking of a game to play so my son wouldn't be bored. We hunted for the works of the teenage mutant ninja turles (Michael Angelo, Rafael, Leonardo and Donatello (he's in the building across unfortunately). I was already in awe when we found the Raphael... then we saw a Leonardo. It was soooo surreal. I never imagined I'll be seeing a Leonardo in my life time. This trip was really awe inspiring. I feel so blessed having been able to visit.

To be honest, It is the biggest and the most elegant museum. In my opinion it is superior than Louvre in Paris, British Museum in London. You need to spend minimum 4-5 hours just to have a nice museum tour of the most remarkable places of the art pieces. There is an option while entering to buy an excursion with a museum staff. She was an awesome lady, with crystal clear English, strongly recommended to use this option.

The Hermitage Museum in St. Petersburg is an unparalleled treasure trove of art and history, a must-visit for any cultural enthusiast. Spanning vast corridors and countless rooms, it's imperative to allocate a full day for this immersive experience. The sheer scale and richness of the exhibits demand time and attention to truly appreciate. One crucial tip: ensure you're well-nourished before embarking on this artistic journey. The museum doesn't offer on-site dining options, and the extensive exploration can be quite energy-consuming. From the opulent Winter Palace to the awe-inspiring art collections, every corner reveals a piece of human creativity and history. Don't rush through; take your time to absorb the magnificence. The Hermitage is not just a museum; it's a testament to the depth and breadth of human achievement. Visitors seeking an unforgettable encounter with art and history should prioritize the Hermitage. Plan ahead, indulge in a hearty meal, and be prepared to be transported through centuries of human creativity and ingenuity. This museum is a true marvel, deserving of every moment you invest.

It has a unique design that combines Neo-Byzantine and Romanesque architecture with Russian features, such as its chandeliers and mosaics.
Worth visiting 30 minutes on the bus from Peterhof. 1km. slow walk from ิus stop. You may be could not find any better than with exception for St.Isaac Cathedral. This remains a functional church, also with a second floor (no tourist access) meaning the interior is less grandiose and relatively small, however no less ornate than other churches you may visit. Worth a visit of you have some extra time, the most beautiful views are from the exterior with the baby blue facade.

The Naval cathedral of Saint Nicholas in Kronstadt (Russian: Морской Никольский собор, Morskoj Nikol'skij sobor) is a Russian Orthodox cathedral built in 1903–1913 as the main church of the Russian Navy and dedicated to all fallen seamen. The cathedral was closed in 1929, was converted to a cinema, a House of Officers (1939) and a museum of the Navy (1980). The Russian Orthodox Church reinstalled the cross on the main dome in 2002 and served the first Divine Liturgy in the cathedral in 2005. In 2013, the Patriarch of Russia, with Prime Minister Dmitriy Medvedev and his spouse attending, conducted the ceremony of grand reconsecration in the now fully restored cathedral.

Beautiful church. It offers to buy candles and other souvenirs from this church. It is close to parks and the harbor. Definitely worth a visit. Dress modest when visiting. Best is to bring a shawl for ladies, because they require the head to be covered. They provide shawls in case you do not have one. No restroom inside, but there are restrooms closeby, you have to pay though.

Cozy homey café / restaurant that serve really great quality food in very reasonable price. For the main dishes, the salmon steak and codfish are fresh and pan-seared to perfection, and the stroganoff was spot on! The waiter and waitress are all speak fluent English and they are very nice. Truly one of the best restaurant I've went in my days spent in St. Petersburg. Worth every rubles. I would return again in Summer! : )

After viewing the St. Isaac's Cathedral we google searched to find restaurants nearby. Teplo gave a rating of 4.7 and a 5 mins walkable distance from the Cathedral. It feels like a quaint little place. The dining furniture and the chairs are different for every table. It may look like a small place when you enter. But it's quite large with a dessert counter and a small play area for the kids. We surely missed the entrance:) We ordered the Bruschetta with mashed chickpea and avocado, Mushroom soup with sour cream, Fried codfish with stewed spinach. All were delicious and the presentation of the dishes were also good. Red Berry drink was yummy. Our 21 months old son also enjoyed it. The staff was friendly and helped with choosing the dishes as per our preferences. There's a small courtyard outside the restaurant with toys and games for the kids to play. It's a great place to be. I would definitely recommnend it and will visit again.

This was my favourite restaurant in St Petersburg. All the food I tried here was delicious, even surprisingly so. The interior is unusual but cosy. The waitresses and waiters are students from a nearby university, they are cute and funny. And they speak many languages, which is handy considering the number of foreigners who seem to frequent to this restaurant.

The food here is truly fantastic and extremely reasonably priced. A tad bit bland for my liking but otherwise the food is great! A small and cosy restaurant located near St. Isaac cathedral. Small indoor seating with more seats outside. There's a playground area outside. Recommended: Pumpkin Soup, Beef Stroganoff with Buckwheat, and Spanish Hot Chocolate with Cointreau

Loved the place - we went for the whole line-up of their house beers and plenty of different seafood and fish meals: absolutely delicious smoked mackerel and some baked whitefish with barley, as well as a grilled squid, aubergine rolls and pan-fried potatoes with forest mushrooms). Everything was just great and served perfectly (the waiter's name was Alexei - he was knowledgeable and courteous). Given we've paid less that 30 quid for the dinner - the place is a real marvel of Kaliningrad fine dining. Strongly recommended!

🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟 Review for Gogol (Гоголь) 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟 I recently had the pleasure of dining at Gogol (Гоголь) and I must say, it was an absolutely delightful experience! From the moment I stepped through the door, the friendly and attentive service made me feel right at home. 👏 The highlight of my visit was undoubtedly the traditional Ukrainian Борщ борщ with Сало. 😋🍲 The flavors were absolutely mouthwatering, and the presentation was a feast for the eyes. The rich and hearty broth paired perfectly with the tender pieces of Сало, creating a truly unforgettable culinary experience. 🇺🇦🍽️ To complement my meal, I indulged in a refreshing Компот. 🍹🍒 The fruity blend was the perfect balance of sweet and tangy, and it added a lovely touch to the overall dining experience. As if that wasn't enough, I also had the pleasure of trying their baked liver with baked apples. Oh my, it was a heavenly combination! The liver was cooked to perfection, so tender and succulent, and the baked apples added a hint of sweetness that perfectly complemented the savory flavors. 😍🍎 The entire dining experience at Gogol (Гоголь) was simply outstanding. The friendly staff, cozy ambiance, and exceptional service made me feel like a valued guest throughout my visit. The attention to detail and the passion for traditional Ukrainian cuisine truly shines through in every dish. #DeliciousFood #YumYum If you're looking for an authentic Ukrainian culinary adventure, Gogol (Гоголь) is an absolute must-visit. Whether you're a fan of Борщ, Сало, or simply want to explore the rich flavors of Ukrainian cuisine, this restaurant will exceed your expectations. 🥰🇺🇦 I can't wait to return to Gogol (Гоголь) and indulge in their delectable dishes once again. Can I give this restaurant a 6 out of 5? The food tastes amazing - special highlights for the beef stroganoff (I want to have it again!!!), the duck breast (very tender, crispy on the outside, and flavorful with a fruity sauce), the Saint Petersburg ice cream assortment and the chocolate sponge cake with raspberry sorbet. If I had to choose one I would definitely recommend the beef stroganoff with no hesitation :))!!! The waitress was so friendly and energetic and speaks fluent English. On a side note, I was impressed on how she memorized all the menu we ordered and even who ordered what - without even a note! Love the ambiance of the place as well, with a decor (including a bell for when you want to order smth) and background music that makes you feel like you're in the 19th century. I want to visit here again :)

Great Russian experience. Quality dishes with classic-style old-school fancy service. Make sure you taste the dumplings. See pictures below. For more experiences like this, follow @quiquinnv

Excellent place for a dinner, with great ambience, decore and service. The decore is very old fashioned and as someone else commented grandma's house. We really liked the salads. Price is above average for local food, but cheap compared to rest of Europe. Book in advance to avoid dissapointment as the venue is smallish.

Somebody described this place as a hidden gem, and I agree. It’s a wonderful old-timey restaurant with a distinct pre-revolution era atmosphere. The waiters wear costumes and are extremely nice and welcoming. The food is fantastic, with a good selection of both Russian and European dishes. In the evening you can hear live piano renditions of rock ballads and other songs. Honestly, it’s the best Saint Petersburg restaurant I’ve visited so far. Shootout to the amazing hostess that was beyond nice!

Refined Russian cuisine. Small delicate dishes, and lovely staff! Book a booth for an authentic 18th century atmosphere.

Gogol is one of my family’s favourite restaurants. In the 2 years we have lived here we have not found more gourmet Russian food. They have the BEST beef stroganoff and a wide variety of Russian dishes, this is a must go for tourists who want to experience authentic Russian food. I recommend Kvass to drink (which is less alcoholic than beer).

Russian restaurant
Katyusha is a cozy Russian restaurant located in the city centre, close to the Kazan Cathedral and the Hermitage. The prices are average and speciality are Russian and Soviet dishes. The decor is 70-80sRussian with music and dishes are delicious. In summer they have a tent outside for dancing/singing performance. Highly recommend to reserve in advance for dinner time in the summer - it tends to get really full. In winter its easier as not many tourists go there.
best russian food I've ever had in my life. the restaurant is quite affordable located in a great place the seating is spacious, beautiful vibes, with waiters dressed in traditional russian clothes. i came we the crew as we work as flight attendants. but some of the highlights in my opinion were the borscht, the stroganoff, the syrniky were to die for, and my favorite, definitely the medovik please do not skip it. the restaurant is quite affordable.

This restaurant has like 3 big rooms. Interior is very nicely decorated. I ordered the traditional fish soup and the chicken & mushroom dish. Both were really good. I also had the 4 set Vodka tasters. My favourite being... Hazelnut Vodka. I've got no complaints with/for this restaurant.

When I visited Russia for the first time, my tour guide recommended this place, and I was NOT disappointed! I can Honestly say this place had the BEST food I ate on my entire trip! Not only delicious and tasted like a home cooked meal, but also very reasonably priced, and the atmosphere is so comfortable and inviting and beautiful. #🇺🇸💗🇷🇺

Amazing place. Accommodating and friendly staff. 70-80s Russian decor and music . And the food is so tasty! Don’t forget to have herbal tea - healthy and tasty. The presentation of dessert is cute… In the summer they have tent outside and dancing/ singing performance. Highly recommend to have reservation for the dinner time in the summer - tends to get really full. In the winter it’s easier as not that many tourists.

I found this place accidentally, and even didn’t think about the charming view, which it has, to the cathedral. Well inside, we were on the terrace, you find the beautiful and cozy interior with friendly staff. We didn’t book anything and got a nice table. A menu has pretty interesting dishes and drinks, but I was personally impressed by matryoshka cocktail, technically it was called with another name, which I forgot. The food was very tasty. No idea about WiFi but definitely there is no parking.

The wines are quite overpriced, but all the service, all the staff are incredible. The food is perfect and nicely served, we got our food really fast. Our coat was taken at the entrance, and we were helped to get them on when we left, I was truly amazed. The music is awesome, we really liked the Russian and Western European 40s and 50s jazz and dance-, ballroom music. The rooms of the place has various nice atmosphere from the granny's kitchen to the overdecorated guestroom, waiting room, nicely placed kitsch all over everything, that serves the best. The service design of the place is well-thought, the menu, the dresses of the staff, the tone looks and feels nice, the number and style of the dishes are well balanced. Humorous, welcoming, warm, cosy place, great experience, I couldn't ask for a better restaurant to go.

Thou the staff were lacking of smiles but they were actually very friendly when you talk to them, the service was excellent and they were very professional. Tables were cleared promptly after each dish, and the staff set the tables and presented each dish gracefully. Food was fantastic! Each dish were plated beautifully and it was a joy to look at. Will definitely recommend to anyone who is visiting!

Arrived Saturday 5th October 2019 (luckily quite early) and got a table without reservation... The restaurant is in the basement. The staff is friendly, the menu offers good choice of upper Russian cuisine... All dishes were great!! The prices slighly high, but compared to quality, quite fair!

Place is very cozy, nice decorations and ornaments. All the waitresses are dressed like dolls and rigorously on flat shoes. It feels like you're dining in a doll house. I found it interesting but I wouldn't go on a regular basis, it's a bit over the top. Food is quite good but not incredible, I've had better. I say it's a bit too salty for my taste. It's located in the city center right next to the Kazan Cathedral, so super easy to get to. I recommend going there once at least to get an interesting experience, then go somewhere else next time to see what else the city has to offer. Prices are a bit over the average but it's understandable due to the location and how the restuarant looks like. Service: could be better, I felt intimidated a bit by the guards at the reception. Waiters are very young so a bit unexperienced. 3 stars seems fair

Sevyyanin is a luxurious restaurant in the historic center of Saint Petersburg, Russia. It is inspired by 19th century Russia, with an antique furniture and decor, and a light style reminiscent of that time. The food here is Russian classics served elegantly in an apartment styled after the period. Chef Aram Mnatsakanov is known as Russias answer to Gordon Ramsay with seven restaurants across Russia and Germany.

Nice service and exquisite traditional Russian cuisine. It would be better if the customers could be informed of the tips which were automatically added to the bill in advance, so the customers could tip correctly.

The beef stroganoff with porcini and truffles oil was absolutely tasty! Service was very kind and attentive. I was careless with the bill’s total amount, underpaid and left. Luckily the waiter found me and he was completely kind about it and laughed over it. Loved this restaurant. Would love to revisit again when I come back to St Petersburg in the future.

Absolutely loved this resto in St Petersburg! The service was impeccable (the waiters are multilingual and spoke good English). The ambiance was cosy and very homey. There was even live music during the evening. All the food we ordered were amazing. Try the caviar with homemade pancakes and pike eggs! Will definitely visit again.
