Basilica of Notre Dame of Fourvière

Mentioned on
Basilica
Sights & Landmarks
The Basilica Notre Dame de Fourviere is a neo-Byzantine religious confection of Roman columns and religious iconography, located in Lyon, France. Its towering exterior is meant to impress with its gleaming marble, gold gilt, fantastic stained glass and hallucinogenic ceiling, making it one of the city's most popular attractions.
Our Lady of Fourvière is an imposing church on the top of the hill with panoramic views of almost the entire city of Lyon. Inside, the rich decoration gives a grandeur to the temple that fixes you. I believe it is the most important attraction of the city without this meaning that this beautiful city does not have many hidden beauties for the traveler. Also for the climb to the hill I highly recommend the picturesque wagon with the cog railway.

The church is located up the hill of Lyon city, the view is spectacular. You can see almost all the building in Lyon. Also the church and art are beautiful both in and out. It is not crowded by the time I visited. It is easy to get here by train. Recommended to come as it must be the bucket-list for Lyon city!

Very beautiful place. Just outside is the splendid view o of the city. Try to get the timing. Right so you can see the sun setting over the city. It’s really breathtaking.

Great view from this hill. Take F2 line up and enjoy the long downhill stroll through old town. Also check out the amphitheatre nearby before you head down.
Jared Larson — Google review
The Basilica is beautiful inside and out, especially when seen up on the hill. The view looking out over Lyon is even better, you can see for miles and look down on all the other landmarks that you probably walked past on your way to this one. Stunning.
Evan Strain — Google review
A beautiful piece of art. A great location to enjoy the view of city from the height. It is an equivalent of scare couer of Paris but maybe slightly better I feel. You can either walk uphill to this place, or can take a cable train or even a car since the place is well connected with roads.
Shreyansh Jain — Google review
Impressive cathedral overlooking Lyon from the top of the hill. Very particular architecture design. It is quite impressive from both outside and inside. The entrance is free and not much to wait to enter. You can visit both the cripta and the main church.
Luca — Google review
Mosaics, stained glass and paintings are more impressive than many places I have seen architecturally and artistically. The location is very good and you can see Lyon from a bird's eye view. We went on foot, I recommend everyone to go out by walking.
Oguzhan Kocabas — Google review
I think it is the most beautiful place of worship in Lyon and I think it is difficult to say otherwise. It is definitely a place that amazes externally and internally indeed and it can be seen from literally every corner of the city center of Lyon! It can be reached by funicular and from the hill you can enjoy a splendid view! Admission is free and it is possible to take photos.
Andrea Nori — Google review
A beautiful, ornate cathedral that I would highly recommend visiting for anyone who appreciates such places. It probably won't be quiet, as it's a big draw in the city, but it won't matter. And there is a great view from just outside the cathedral as well as a restaurant and café. Parking your bike isn't super easy, is my only criticism, as there doesn't seem to be any dedicated spaces for them. However, I was pretty easily able to put it somewhere.
Alex Jakeman — Google review
Visiting this magnificent cathedral provides an opportunity to appreciate the exquisite beauty of architecture, transcending its purely religious significance. It is highly recommended to maintain a sense of decorum, refraining from raising your voice, and respecting the solemn atmosphere during Masses when exploring the cathedral. Upon concluding your visit, you can savor a splendid panoramic view of the city from the nearby lookout point and indulge in a delightful coffee and snack at the outdoor café in close proximity.

While spending the day in Lyon we saw this beautiful white church high on a hilltop. We found an old funicular (one of the only four in the world) to take us to the church. The ride was unique but sadly passed through tunnels without any views. Once we got out, we saw this beautiful church both inside and out. In the crypt area, they had an exhibit about the cloth of Turin. There are also spectacular views of Lyon at the backside of the church. Definitely worth the visit if you're in the area...

This is an amazing Notre Dame! One of the best I’ve seen in France. There’s a few way to reach it, there is a metro station stop directly in front, you can climb up the steep steps and the steep hike they Jardin de rosary (which we did) or you can drive up and park nearby. Highly recommended.
Dan Ho — Google review
Very beautiful church. The priest passing by greeted my family and I sitting in the pews and struck up a conversation in my native language, my children loved it. It was a great heart warming welcome for the children as it was their first time in Europe and inside a church. A side note, as a visitor to any holy place, please be respectful, keep your voice down and control your children. Always make sure you are aloud to take pictures (never assume you are allowed to take pictures just because there are pictures online). While we were there there was was woman who thought that everyone in the church couldn't hear her.

Just had an incredible experience at the Notre-Dame Basilica Fourvière in Lyon! 🙌✨ The journey to reach this magnificent landmark was absolutely worth it. Climbing the steps up the hill, taking in the stunning views of the city along the way, and finally standing in awe of the basilica's beauty – it's a memory I'll cherish forever. Lyon, you never cease to amaze me! 😍🏰 #NotreDameBasilicaFourviere #LyonExploration #UnforgettableViews

An absolutely gorgeous place to visit with some incredible architecture. A great view of Lyon from above at the back of the basilica. It was quite busy when we visited in the middle of the day, so it was not the best time to appreciate everything in a peaceful atmosphere.
Shannon T — Google review
About 15 mins after you cross the bridge into Old Town. It’s a long upward ascent to the Basilica, but the view at the top makes it all worth it. The architecture is beautiful and the Priests were also very welcoming when we went inside. Recommended to visit.
Terence Israel — Google review
This is quite simply one of the most beautiful cathedrals in the world. The Stained Glass windows are wonderful, especially around the altar. The mosaics around the knave are incredible. The views are spectacular. The external building is so well cared for.
Sean O'Neill — Google review
One of the most spectacular places to visit in Lyon during the summer. You are able to see the city of Lyon from the terrace of basilica and in the middle of the summer this place can be quite crowded. If there is no clouds the view can be amazing as most buildings starts to reflect the sunlight, making a unique view. Inside the basilica is spectacular with French architecture is showing its best of times. Good place to pray as well if you are keen on doing so.
Tharindu Athauda — Google review
Absolutely beautiful with amazing views of the river and the city. The funiculaire was quite busy to go up, so I walked instead. The walk was moderately challenging with lots of steps. I took the funiculaire back down, and it was much less busy on the way down. There is so much to see at the Bassilica. Check out the crypt and the chapel for Mary, too. Beautiful

A beautiful cathedral overlooking the city of Lyon. The church is a functioning place of worship so please treat the area with utmost respect. The intricate details on ceilings and walls show how much the people cherish their religion. Downstairs there's a crypt that one can visit. Don't forget to go behind the church to see a beautiful panorama of Lyon. Best way to get here is to take the furnicular.
Ryan Chua — Google review
We walked through both floors and around the Basilica and it was very amazing. Tons of extremely impressive mosaics and lots of gold. A very amazing and dramatic view. They very well explain all the mosaics and art in the hall. The descriptions are only in French so make sure you either have your translating camera or someone to read the descriptions to you if you need as they are quite interesting. The lower floor was super unique showing different countries views on the church which isn’t super common it feels.
Dorian Munro — Google review
Magnificent basilica and not a castle as it looks from afar. Also spectacular view from the monument's terrasse. A view only beaten by Mont Martre towards Paris in my book so far. We had the pleasure to participate to the mess on Sunday and it is also breath taking as it is full of visitors participating in the singing.
Hristo Shishkov — Google review
Just stunning - the highlight of Lyon for sure. They call it 'the upside down elephant' because it resembles an elephant on its back and it's strangely apt. The inside is beautiful and FREE to enter which is nice. Also really enjoyed the innovative contactless votive candle payment system. Great gift shop across the street too. Just beware the very steep hill and stairs up to the Basilica - they're no joke!
Nicholas — Google review
This basilica is located in the most strategic point in Lyon to get a great view of the city. Just walk around the basilica to the other side of the plaza and you will see all of Lyon in front of you. You can see the two rivers, and all the areas up to the far mountains. For the basilica itself, I really liked the lion statue at the entrance, it's a great piece of art. The candle stands inside are so beautiful with all the colorful candle cups. I also liked the stained glass and paintings. I'll share some photos here.

Musée Cinéma et Miniature

Specialty Museums
This museum is devoted to hyper-realistic miniature scenes and movie props, as well as special effects exhibits. It is another unusual attraction that many tourists find fascinating. The museum has over 400 pieces of movie memorabilia, including costumes, accessories, and sets. Additionally, the museum houses a collection of 120 miniature movie sets meticulously created by artist Dan Ohlmann. Visitors can enjoy posing in front of dinosaurs or walking through a miniature version of the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
A really great museum and fantastic way to spend an hour or two in Lyon. The first few floors are props, costumes and other items from major films. These are all pretty interesting, but the highlight is in the top floor. A series of absolutely incredible miniature scenes painstakingly created with astounding details. I could look at them for ages, marvelling at the skill. Never seen anything like it. My photos here are all models, no more than 2 feet across.
James Richardson — Google review
A fabulous museum. I last visited in 1998 when it was miniatures only and the highlight was Bible verses on a grain of rice. Now it has a wonderful display of cinematic props and models, costumes, prosthetics, weapons and other artifacts. Wes Anderson has his own gallery. The miniature rooms on the top floor are simply amazing, both intricate and beautiful. Well worth a visit.
Ian Davis — Google review
This is one of my favorite museums in France and is a great museum for a movie fan. You could spend a lot of time there without being bored. There are a lot of nice props, costumes, and film technologies, etc that are amazing. My favorite part of this museum is the miniature part. The miniatures are so incredible, and painstakingly created. I can visit and spend ages looking at all of them, and still not be bored at all. Dan Ohlmann and other artists have done a wonderful job, and I would like to thank them for creating such an amazing museum like this. I highly recommend visiting this museum when you are visiting Lyon.
Mandy my PHN — Google review
Visited this place a little bit before closing and I had to fight myself to believe that it was miniature. The first floor is major film props like Harry Potter, but the top floor is the main standout, A collection of incredibly detailed miniature scenes that were meticulously built. You could be amazed at the skill for a very long time, next to nothing you've ever seen. All of the images of the sets are pressed to the window, no more than 15 cm.
Prince Andrew Ardayfio — Google review
I came to this museum because I had access to it with the Lyon City Card pass (super easy to use when visiting Lyon). I really enjoyed this museum; it had 4-5 floors with 8-9 different exhibits. It’s a nice tourist attraction for cinephile and families that enjoy looking at movie props. I spent probably 1h30 doing all the floors and could’ve spent much longer if I wasn’t on a tight schedule. There is lineup to get in here, but it wasn’t long (probably 15-20 mins wait). I recommend this museum to all that visit Lyon, especially if you want to escape the afternoon summer heat.
Alex — Google review
A privately owned museum that will delight film buffs and newbies alike! The ticket paid for itself with the ground-floor Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade sidecar (a reproduction that you can get in and photograph), as well as the idol from Raiders (that you can also play and photograph yourself with). I won't spoil your fun with more details: just know it is totally worth visiting 😊
Diana Duque — Google review
It's rare that you go to a museum that's truly different and spectacular at the same time, but this is exactly what this is. You start with visiting various parts of the set of the movie Perfume. Then there are a few floors containing various items used in many popular movies. You finish at the top floor containing lots of absolutely stunning miniatures used in films. Overall a brilliant experience and I'd say this is a must for any movie fans visiting Lyon.
Vlad Schnakovszki — Google review
Brilliant if you are a movie fan. Real sets, props and costumes from some the biggest movies in history. Some of the displays maybe a little upsetting for very small children, but otherwise very family friendly. The building is very old and atmospheric. Loved the Alien Queen as used in AVP and the Predator costume.
Shaun Morgan — Google review
From the outside, the museum looks very small. This place has nine floors, stacked in a beautiful building in Lyon's old town. The miniature exhibits are out of this world. They are meticulously designed and illustrated with lighting. The cinema part of the museum is also fun. Do not miss this place if you are in Lyon.
Fawad Hussain — Google review
A very nice place, located in the center of the old town in an old building. The museum presents many interesting fragments and costumes from different films.
Anna Fedorova — Google review
4 floors. 9 rooms. More than 500 items from Hollywood film studios and other studios from the world! Incredible experience. I literally saw decorations and costumes from original Star Wars, Back to the future, Batman, Spider-Man (all movies that were made before the digital era) - all these amazing things! These emotions and feelings have to be experienced. Thanks to Dan Ohlmann for collecting it!
Kirill Maksimkin — Google review
This museum was so incredibly amazing, we loved it! So many great movie props, costumes and prosthetics from the actual movie productions - what a collection! I was especially blown away by the miniatures collection on the top floor. I could have spent all day looking at each scene; the talent of the artist who constructs them is otherworldly. Definitely check this one out!

When visiting Lyon, I didn’t have the intention to visit this museum. It was the beautiful reddish building that attracted me and I am very thankful. It was a beautiful experience, many interesting surprises and mesmerising pieces. Totally recommend
Douae Ahmadoun — Google review
Came here over 7 years ago and I returned today. Such an endearing place, a Lyon must and, if you love films/design, you will enjoy it so much. My only comment is that it lacks accessibility; the elevator was not working and the exhibitions are inaccessible unless you go up and down some slipper stairs over and over again. Love place!!
Issa Herrera — Google review
Fantastic! Set in an amazing multi story building. Lots of neat movie props and history as well. Information signage is English too. The miniatures on the top floors are lifelike and excellent in the recreation. Well worth the cost of admission and set inside the old town so lots of great stuff to see nearby too. Highly recommend!
rodvac — Google review
An enjoyable museum with displays of props and costumes from film and a lovely exhibition of miniatures. The Lyon City Pass allows discounted tickets at €5 instead of €16.

What a lovely museum. I did enjoy it more than I thought that I would. You need at least 2hrs. Recommended when in Lyon.
D L — Google review
Definitely a larger focus on older movies in this museum which is only natural. I’d say you need to be 25 or older to understand everything but it’s easy to appreciate for movie fans. Lots of cool props, the sets are rather niche but cool as are the miniature sets.
Evan Strain — Google review
An amazing museum with so many items that would turn the heads of movie addicts. Real items that were used in blockbuster movies. The miniature part of the museum is really unbelievable, the level of details is incredible. A highly recommended destination whenever in Lyon

Interesting memorial of the former prison. Leaflets available in French and English. No admission fee. We had very informative and interesting talk with the receptionist - thank you again for sharing your knowledge, stories and answering our questions.

Warning: this is not a pleasant place to visit. Though I don't understand French or know much about European history, my heart felt heavy and depressed when looking at the exhibits especially those relevant to Holocaust. It'd beyond my imagination the hardship and suffering people endured here. Salute and 5 stars to those who make the efforts to preserve this piece of sad and dark history so that people can learn from it and avoid repeating the same mistake in whatever form and shape.

I disliked this place as it was gloomy and made me feel uncomfortable in such an atmosphere (personal feeling). On the other hand, some cells did provide good information like which well-known figures were inside there before. The tour guide did a good job by explaining the history very well!

(Translated by Google) This prison is chilling. The explanations are all harder to read than the others. The hell that the prisoners experienced seems unreal as it is sadistic and monstrous. We were not able to follow the guided tour, the self-guided tour is quite short but does not lack reading material. Each cell contains information about important people from this dark era. Despite everything, there is still a lot of reading and it can be boring. The guided tour is surely to be preferred.

(Translated by Google) Went here for dinner with a group of 6. The food was fine, but I missed some extra flavor, I felt like everything was a bit flat, I personally prefer a stronger flavor. I had the mushroom and deer cappuccino. Couscous was served with the venison, which is a shame, a potato gratin/mashed potato or even boiled potatoes would have been a better accompaniment. But good tastes are personal.....

Recently went for a team dinner. Big beautiful well-done space , ambience was classy and relaxed. They have a good menu that changes often and there are wine pairings with each dish. Loved that. They had fresh gluten free bread, risotto and even modified their dessert to suit my allergy issues. All other dishes had gluten, as their sauces contain flour. Would be great to try these if they replace with maizena or alternative flours. My colleagues liked the other dishes like chapon and the chartreuse dessert Would recommend.

great service from start to end. takes the jacket, explains the dishes, attentive to the needs. keep it up! food was as expected, classy and of good quality but just shy of being amazing though. the amuse-bouche was nicely done and tasty. my poached oysters entree was really delicious(which is a big deal to me because i usually like oysters fresh and raw and seldom like it cooked). my iberique porc main course was reasonably ok, the quality of the meat itself was good but the sauce and accompanying items was not good enough for me(esp the lentil cake). finally my entremet cappucino dessert was just about right for me, not too sweet. Prices could be viewed as a little on the high side but it was a good french cuisine experience nonetheless and therefore still deserve a 5-star rating.

Excellent service. Friendly and professional staff. The people in the reception spoke English well. Very clean and my bed was so good. I woke up refreshed and ready for a new day. Breakfast has a choice for most people. Location is spot on as it’s a few steps from the old town. Don’t worry when the taxi stops in front of the hotel. The exterior is plain compared to interior. We stayed in Le Phenix hotel the 1st weekend in October at the last minute after our Airbnb had an issue we couldn't resolve. We checked in on Friday afternoon about 30 minutes after making the reservation online and everything went very smoothly. They room was very spacious and lovely. Very clean and the bed was comfortable. The tub was jetted and so we tried out a bath. I would recommend this hotel to anyone. I did not include the breakfast in our reservation as we like to walk around and try local bakeries. But it did look very appetizing and I wouldn't hesitate to eat it. highly recommend.

Located at a perfect spot for Vieux Lyon/Old Town right around the corner - also has a wonderful view of the quai on its front door! The hotel is really well done up as a refurbished older building, very boutique - some really nice courtyard areas throughout too. The top floor rooms are super spacious even with the angled ceiling - the jacuzzi bathtub was a treat after a day walking the city. Super comfy double bed too! The room/hotel is considerate about electricity usage and reducing plastic use - they offer free water refills in glass bottles which was great! A big thanks to the wonderful staff - always welcoming, always charming and always lovely to chat to whether heading out or home for the day.

Located adjacent to the lake, this elegant and opulent dining establishment serves as an ideal venue for special occasions but may not be suitable for casual outings. Undoubtedly, it is rather pricey (with an average cost of 25 euros per meal), particularly considering the modest portion sizes, thus it may not be the best choice if you are famished.
Perfect place for a family lunch or a nice dinner. The waiter was really friendly and made the hole experience even better. Food really delicious

A wonderfully located restaurant with a great view of the lake. Pleasant and attentive staff. They offer a mid-week formule which in this occasion wasn’t what we wanted so we ordered a la carte. The food we had was delicious but just one observation - when trendy restaurants describe their course with only three nouns, it doesn’t necessarily prepare you for what is to come - my partner had the “Gambas / Avocat Citronnée / Sésame” to start but there was no hint that it was raw or ceviche prawns which unfortunately are not to her taste. It was fine - I’m sure they would have changed it but we ended up just swapping starters, but if they aren’t going to put something like that in print, they really should tell you when handing out the menus.

Situated right next to the lake, this fancy, pretty luxurious restaurant is a really good place for special occasions, but not so good for a casual outing. Indeed, it's pretty expensive (25 euros on average for a meal), especially considering the meals themselves are quite small, so don't go there if you're really hungry! The food itself, however, is really good and the place is very stylish (definitely the prettiest restaurant in the duingt/st jorioz area), which is why I'm still giving it 4 stars.

Well located and fairly priced modern bistro/restaurant by the shore of Lake Annecy. The food was well presented and delicious; good selection of wines too, however my girlfriend was inadvertently given a glass of dessert wine to accompany her main. Would definitely recommend, I would imagine their terrace is delightful during the summer!

(Translated by Google) The service is slow at first but the staff is pleasant and knows the menu and the composition of the dishes well to guide you. The cuisine is excellent, refined and with fresh quality products. The cooking is controlled and the seasonings just right 👌. The chef deserves a Michelin guide! Nice wine list.

Very cozy restaurant with medieval architecture of the spaces, loved the vibe around it. The service is good - attentive and fast. Are the menu which for the quality you get is quite cheap for 39 EUR. Can say that all of the food was of a great quality and enjoyed every bite of it.

Good damped room acoustics made conversation easy while it was hard to eavesdrop on the neighbouring table. The lighting and interior was romantic and cozy without being cramped. The staff was professional. The food was presented in a great way and had an exotic taste and texture.

Amazing little restaurant in the older part of Chambery. We used to use it when we used to stop at Chambery overnight on way to the Alps. Recently revisited and had the most fantastic Plat du Jour 20Euro lunch - 3 courses, 1 glass of good wine and coffee. Very good food, lovely ambiance and service. Thoroughly recommended.
