Province of Bologna

The Metropolitan City of Bologna is a metropolitan city in the Emilia-Romagna region of Italy. Its capital is de facto the city of Bologna, though the body does not explicitly outline it. It was created by the reform of local authorities and established by the Law 56/2014, replacing the province of Bologna. Wikipedia.

Two Towers

Mentioned on
The Two Towers are a prominent sight in the city of Bologna that were built in the 12th century by noble families. These landmark symbols offer stunning views of the city and have become a popular tourist attraction. Meanwhile, an impressive religious site in Bologna is the Sette Chiese basilica, which is an atmospheric labyrinth of interlocking ecclesiastical structures featuring Romanesque, Lombard and ancient Roman architecture.
Super cool spot and really inexpensive for INCREDIBLE views of beautiful Bologna!! Highly recommend! It is 498 stairs and some are pretty steep! Wear good shoes and prepare to be winded. There are several platforms you can stop to rest at but once you get to the top there is a lot of room and incredible views (great photo ops)!!! There are some “holes” in the wall on your way up to see some sneak peeks! Highly recommend. Only 5euro. Buy tickets before!!

Better than Pisa, in my opinion! Less crowds, better story, feels more real. These towers let you really get hands -on and get some fantastic panoramic photos. Arrive at opening for easier access and less crowds. We had a very minimal wait in late November with the tickets we bought on mobile on site, about 20 minutes or so. Cost was very reasonable. This is a pretty intense climb of 500+ stairs. There are platforms where you can rest at intervals. It's roomy as European stair climbs go, though, so less of an issue for anyone with phobias, perhaps. There's a neat little art shop attached, just around the corner, too. It's a great stop after all those stairs!
Jaci Szczepanski — Google review
From the top of the tower there is a nice panoramic view. With a quick climb, the experience takes less than 10 minutes one way. In the tower, many stairs are really old and everyone should be careful, especially when going down.
Polya Pavlova — Google review
One of the cool attractions in Bologna is the two towers. Climbing the ~500 steps is no easy task, but the effort is really worth it. From the top of the Asinelli tower you can admire the city in all its glory. The other tower, Garisenda, is closed due to restoration work. Keep in mind that you'll have to book in advance for your ticket, as the towers don't have a front desk. You may be able to buy the tickets from a shop in the city center from what I've heard, but buying online was quicker and simpler in my case. On a side note, going up with a larger backpack is allowed, but not recommended, because one may get tired. We've heard that this is the tallest medieval tower in all of Europe. All in all, if you're in Bologna even for a day, you shouldn't miss this one :).
Mihai B — Google review
Full price for the ticket is 5€, student ticket 3€. The stairs are challenge for most of the people. But the reward on the top is priceless. Definitely recommend to visit once but only once. Mandatory to have the tickets prior. VERY IMPORTANT TIP: tickets can sold out so check beforehand for sure! You should arrive 5 minutes before your reservation
? Family — Google review
Best place in Bologna to have a good view of the city. There is no elevator here. You must walk up almost 500 steps. There are multiple places to stop and take a break. We do recommend getting tickets in advance, especially during the summer season, and if you want to go at a particular time, such as sunset, which is very popular.
Jim C — Google review
As for walking upstairs the towers, I strongly recommend good sport ĺshoes, be patient because it is tiring going upstairs and definitely book tickets in advance because people enter in groups, so you should choose the time of your visit in advance. Someone should definitely go upstairs because the view is fantastic as well as the inside of the tower.
FOTIOS FOTAKIDIS — Google review
Important tips - be prepared to walk, wear walking shoes - if you intend to climb the tower , wear suitable shoes (non-slip types), shirts and maybe some wipes cause you will be sweating - try to visit in Sundays when they close the area off to cars and bikes, so you can walk on the main streets - if you visit during weekdays , careful of cars and bikes Good: - really beautiful - do visit on Sunday , as they close the roads to cars . So you can walk on the road without worrying about cars or bikes Bad: - try to visit during off peak, as there could be too many tourist during peak seasons
Malaysia Barista — Google review
A unique, must-try experience. Admittedly it’s quite a climb to the top but the views are stunning and you can grab a drink or gelato afterwards from the numerous stores nearby. Just make sure you book online in advance and bring a bottle of water.

Museo per la Memoria di Ustica

Mentioned on

Specialty Museums
The Museum for the Memory of Ustica is a historical museum that houses recovered airplane parts and objects from an unsolved crash that occurred in 1980. The exhibit provides a solemn tribute to the victims of the tragedy, where visitors can enter a room below ground level to see the wreckage of the plane. The display serves as a reminder of our human capacity for memory and how it shapes who we are. In addition, Christian Boltanski's installation adds personal depth to the dismantled aircraft.
A really atmospheric and interesting place, giving dignity to the victims. Christian Boltanskis intervention is really well made piece, adding personal layers to the dismantled plane.
Alf Alf — Google review
A respectful, hauntingly beautiful memorial for an unexpected fall of an airplane. Its so much more than that, a story full of lies and hiding.
Giancarlo Meléndez — Google review
Wonderfully moving, we all loved it!
Pam Gallio — Google review
I had vague memories of this being reported when I was about 13 back in 1980. This museum, or more accurately this memorial to the terrible incident that resulted in the loss of 81 lives is sad, respectful and moving. It is well worth a visit and was fairly quiet when I was there on a Thursday morning… just a couple of small school groups. Don’t expect much in the way of explanation, especially in English, though the film that covers the setting up of the memorial does have subtitles (a bit arty and poetic for my taste but…). It is definitely worth reading about the flight before you visit. Anyway, an amazing memorial to a terrible incident!
Andrew Townshend — Google review
Emozionante: enter in a room below the ground where a plane lies like a broken bird. It was made for flying, but someone threw it to the ground, hitting it to death along with its flying passengers. It is not a matter of responsabilities, not anymore. It is a matter of memories. Human beings are made of memories. They make us what we are, they strike us, they excite us, they are part of us.
Lestat Bouthellier — Google review
Fails on every level except the indulgence of conspiracy. An accident “unsolved” only by the determined application of ignorance, no evidence is presented for any of the wild speculation (nor ever has been). Galling that a potentially vibrant public space is gifted to such toxic and baseless nonsense. It cannot even muster a dignified tribute to those who died, choosing black mirrors and light bulbs over (suggestion!) names or photos of the real victims. A sentimental and finally weird video shows the exploitation of those mourning to excite the credulous, pretty similar to any fifth columnist work. A crystalised waste of time, public energy, and intellectual capacity. Go see Neptune and eat some pasta instead.
Ben G — Google review
A sombre atmosphere in a museum, a shrine to the victims of Itavia 870 and an artistic expression. It will be an upsetting view if you are afraid of flying.
haris g — Google review
Really moving place dedicated to the memory of the victims of a horrible tragedy, as well as an informative movie presenting the evolution of the idea of this memorial. The history of the tragedy itself isn't fully covered, at least not in English, so for foreign visitors it's a good idea to do the research beforehand
Michał Murawski — Google review
A really emotional Memorial. Seeing the wreckage gives you goosebumps and the video was informative.
Antonia Moritz — Google review
Sounds haunting with the voices. Reminder how precious life is. Free entry and toilet facilities. Disabled access.
Anthony Manmohan — Google review
It is only memorial, do not expected anything else than a crashed plane and the projection of the documentary about the accident. The place is very creepy, because of the background voices and the lightening. The entrance is free. The memorial is placed in the former tram depo. There are still remaining rails outside.
Viktor Cerny — Google review
Well off the beaten tourist track, and with peculiar opening hours, the museum can be a tricky to access. For those that do visit however, they will experience a very moving and compelling exhibit. Access is free, but they do request you book in advance if possible. The exhibit is housed in the old tramway buildings adjacent to a pleasant park. It looks very nondescript and unremarkable from the outside, which almost amplifies the emotional impact once you enter. Once you slip through the door, the sight of the carcass of the plane , and the violence visited on it, your breath is taken away. After that shock subsides, the next thing you notice is how insubstantial it looks, a sorry mess of fragments clinging to a mesh frame. Then you recall that it contained 81 poor souls, and the sombre , sepulchral mood takes over. They are also recalled using 81 lights suspended from the ceiling, that dim almost to the point of extinguishing, before bursting back to life. That simple effect and the urgent, insistent, whispers of recorded speech from the dark mirrors placed on the walls, movingly recalls the victims. There is also a short video describing the creation of the museum and the artistic vision underpinning it. That also recalls the family and friends left behind, and their trojan efforts to uncover the truth about the loss of their loved ones and their efforts to keep their memory alive. With this wonderfully moving tribute they have certainly succeeded.

The Museo Realtà Virtuale - La Macchina del Tempo provides a unique and enjoyable experience that transports visitors back in time to see what Bologna was like in the past. The friendly and welcoming atmosphere adds to the overall experience. The escape room is also a fun activity for those visiting with children, as no knowledge of Italian is necessary. The customer service is excellent, making this museum a must-see attraction. However, there are still opportunities for improvement to enhance visitors' experiences further.
The escape room was surprisingly fun (did it with our kids) and no knowledge of Italian was needed (the staff explained our objectives in English)

We tried it out today with my son (13). We both did not like it. We chose Bologna version. The graphic is terrible, the map is small. One of my controllers had low battery, so I was supposed to call for the stuff, which took me couple of minutes to change the battery. So I lost some time. There is no much information you got through the visit. It could have been done in much better way. We tried out this kind of service in Germany. It was much better and worth it.

🇮🇹🇮🇹🇮🇹🇮🇹🇮🇹🇮🇹🇮🇹🇮🇹🇮🇹🇮🇹🇮🇹🇮🇹🇮🇹🇮🇹Fantastic, a bit like total recall. The middle-aged Bologna was the best. The people with question marks around them, you click and they give you educational information. You firstly are at daytime in the street, you can go into certain shops, backyards, and the local tavern. Then you go up the tower and then fly. A bit scary and leaves grown-ups dizzy, but you can fly up onto coin things and they give you information. Then you land and have a torchlight in your hand, but you cannot set things on fire, as I tried. Then it starts to rain. You can stay out, or go into the tavern. Then it ends. In the discovering Tutankhamun's tomb experience you can click on certain objects to view them up close. You can also click on floating statues or books to hear Howard Carters notes. You are firstly are at the camp. You break down a wall, a short walk, and you break down another wall. You can explore 2 rooms. Then it ends. The experiences were on virtual reality headsets and headphones. The lady wouldn't let the 6 year old do the full on experience, though the man would. When I walked into a wall repeatedly on purpose, she kept redirecting me.😦

For kids is ok.. but for adult very limited information in the tour. Is nice as is virtual and thats attract. but the feeling was like we were bothering them. And when we left we wanted to say thank you and the guy was completely ignoring us and talking on the on the phone..anyway not so sure is a must…. Are better things to do on Bologna!! And definitely other museums to be seen!!!!!

Honestly, I didn't like it. Maybe because of the wrong expectations. I expected moving seats in front of a big screen with 3D glasses, but we get VR glasses on personal computers. It takes time to understand how to act because they didn't explain well what to do. Also, the price is too high (16€) for VR.

Went here with my 6 year old, my sister and 14 year old nephew. We all loved it. Such a cool experience and Gianni and Anna were sweet, helpful, knowledgeable. Just great experience all around.

We had a great time and loved the expérience. It is indeed like travelling in time. My partner is passionate about history and can’t wait to do it again. In case you suffer vertigo the « flight » over the towers might be a bit impressive as it is pretty realistic. I suffer vertigo and it felt a bit strange at start but then really enjoyed it. Go for it, it is a wonder way to immerse into Bologna ‘s history and culture !

Public library
The Biblioteca Comunale dell'Archiginnasio is the largest library in Emilia-Romagna and one of the oldest libraries in Europe. The building is two-story with an interesting architecture and contains the world's largest collection of manuscripts, letters, books, drawings, and prints.
Wow! Almost missed this amazing library! While you cannot tour the library itself there is still lots to see. The Teatro Anatomico and the Stabat Mater Hall are both part of the library building but for 3 euros they are accessible to tourists and boy is it worth it!
Ted Oatway — Google review
3 euros to visit the oldest anatomical theatre was worth every penny. Very cool experience. The wood carvings were beautiful and the marble operating table was a trip. They sure don’t make ‘em like they used to! Humbling experience to see the oldest university in the western world. Only takes about 30 minutes and well worth a stop.
Andrew Herzfeld — Google review
Booking in advance is 3 plus 0.50 fee. Walking ticket is 3 euro but you have to wait a queue for 15 mins. If you travel in weekend, booking is a must. Great place to visit. Keep a ticket for enter the library.

Your visit to the palazzo housing the Biblioteca Comunale dell'Archiginnasio will be on your mind for a long time. As soon as you enter, you're greeted with a great looking - and very symmetrical courtyard. Walking up and down hallways and stairways, you see murals, coats of arms and frescoes. The details are stunning. This was a highlight of my visit to Bologna.

Must see when you visit Bologna. Unfortunately you cant visit all of the library for the reason that people read and study there. Its still a library for students and not Disneyland. But the areas open to the public are impressive already.

It was all very impressive and beautiful. The entrance fee is 3€ and you get to see the anatomy theatre and the stabat mater room. The whole building is incredible. It is filled with 6000 coats of arms , painted ceilings and statues. The anatomy theatre has the marble table in the middle and wooden carvings on the ceiling and the walls and statues of 20 important doctors of the time. The stabat matter room is magnificent! The decorations are impressive and the books also! A must visit overall when in Bologna.

A very interesting place to visit in Bologna. In this beautiful building you will find this old library full of interesting books from another era. You can also choose to visit Teatro Anatomico, a small wooden amphitheater where students used to take anatomy lessons. Very interesting, well worth the visit and the ticket price is reasonable.
d0rian7 — Google review
The oldest university in the world, absolutely stunning details. I definitely recommend the anatomy room, that leaves you wondering how such intricate, detailed pieces of art can be carved out of Wood. It is the worlds first anatomy study rooms, where the first medical students would study and dicest corpses.
Rama Aruna — Google review
For 3 euros you get to see a beautiful anatomical theatre built in the 17th century and a lovely old reading area and a small door where you can peak into the old classrooms. Highly recommended to visit this old university

You have to visit it, it’s amazing. Tickets are free for under 18 years old and 3€ for adults
Γιάννης Ζερβος — Google review
Very beautiful place, it's 3€ to enter the library and the anatomical theater. Both rooms are very interesting and even the halls connecting them have beautiful paintings on the walls. Also check out the garden first before heading up stairs. I recommend scanning the Qr code for the audio tour, it gives you just a little bit more knowledge about the place. If you don't have earphones or something with you, you can still scan it because they also have everything written down. I didn't buy my tickets in advance and the wait wasn't too bad but I'd still recommend buying them in advance to make it easier for yourself.
Brenda — Google review
Highly recommend a vist here during your stay. The most is 3 euros and worth every penny. The lady at the ticket window is grumpy and rude. Probably in the wrong line of work. In the absence of English signs, she absolutely refused to answer questions or direction on how to get a ticket. If you get your tickets in advance online, you don't have to talk to her and that makes for a more pleasant day.
Brian Muchmore — Google review
Archiginnasio is an interesting attraction in Bologna. It was constructed in the late 16th-century by architect Antonio Morandi and was the seat of the University of Bologna, the oldest continuously operating university in the world, for several centuries before being repurposed as a municipal library for which the building still serves to this day in the 19th-century. The inner courtyard of Archiginnasio is for free to enjoy. You can see wall and ceiling frescos that line the portico, hall and stairways. Upstairs is where you will find the historic Anatomical theatre and the Sala dello Stabat Mater which require ticket purchase €3 per person (as of March 2024). These can be reserved in advance online or timed entry or you can try your luck at the ticket desk. Opening hours are 10am to 6pm daily. Note: We tried walk in visit during a weekend and found them sold out on the day. We returned on Monday with online ticket reservations and found that it was possible to do walk-in visit on that day as most were there purchasing tickets on the spot, only a few of us had advance purchased tickets.
Brad — Google review
Definitely check the anatomical theater and library part too. Unfortunately I couldn’t as it was closed due to national holiday but the part that is open to public was also pretty impressive. Possible to see a lot of family crests of graduate students on the walls and ceilings.
Özlem Karaca — Google review
Very nice museum, you can visit the Anatomical theatre and the Stabat Mater Hall. They are just amazing, a jewel in the city, both are breathtaking. It’s a must to visit in Bologna. And it costs only 3€ both.

Don't miss the opportunity to visit this incredibly historic and stunning university, which remains operational to this day. You'll be captivated by its beauty and rich heritage. The best part is, there's no need for a ticket, and it's not crowded at all. Make sure to check it out; it's definitely worth a visit!

We didn’t plan on visiting this library but we were passing by and the beauty of the frescos attracted us in! Beautiful paintings and coats of arms and pictures! Highly recommended

Cool place to visit. Unfortunately you have to buy tickets to see the most interesting room but its worth the €3.
Rogier vd Weide — Google review
The former university building, Archiginnasio di Bologna, has been home to the Biblioteca comunale dell'Archiginnasio since the second half of the 19th century. Just as the building is worth seeing with its architecture, its library is also worth seeing with its inventory. The library is still operating today and cannot be visited entirely for touristic purposes. There is a smaller library area in one part of the building for tourists to visit. The building also continues to preserve the Teatro Anatomico, which was used for anatomy classes at the old university. It also hosts various exhibitions in its courtyard from time to time. You can buy separate tickets to visit the anatomical theater and the library, or you can also buy a combined ticket.

Shrine
Sights & Landmarks
The Sanctuary of the Madonna di San Luca is an important Catholic church located on a hill outside the city centre. It is renowned for its icon of the Virgin Mary with the Child, painted by St. Luke in the 2nd century AD. The climb to reach the temple can be strenuous, and earns it a place on Italy's National Pilgrimages Route.
It’s a great turistic spot to go to. After a nice 1h walk under the arches you get to a nice monastery with a beautiful church inside. It is worth it to walk there to see the paintings on some of the arches

As a student studying abroad in Bologna Italy this summer, this is my number 1 must see if your visiting this city. The walk to the top is well worth the journey and is a relatively flat incline with some stairs along the way closer to the top, friendly for all ages. Inside the church at the top is breathtaking and has beautiful views that look over the entire city. I’ve walked and biked to the top multiple times since being here and it managed to take my breath away every time!
Autumn Thompson — Google review
Nice walking place! It’s better to wear some sports pants..!! The church on the top is also quite pretty!! I would recommend you to go up to the observatory in the church with little bit of pay.
Daniel Yoo — Google review
It is an easy 5 km walk to the basilica with a perfect view of the city and the surrounding hills. You start in the city centre and walk under corridors throughout the walk. Even if it rains - no problem. The first part is flat and the last 30 minutes you have to climb the stairs to the top. It's worth it, I tell you. If you can't walk, you can also take a mini-train or a bus to the Santuario Madonna di San Luca. There's construction work going on there at the moment. Meaning that the paths are tricky and tight to go trough for all the human traffic. ;) We were there over Easter and there were lots of tourists but also locals. Last but not least: Be aware that there are no public toilets. If you’re in desperate need there are lots of kiosks, bars and restaurants to chill, take a break and use the bathroom there. Do this stroll and enjoy the hallway and corridors of Bologna to the fullest. A hearty recommendation! ♥️

Must visit while in bologna even on a cloudy day, the views are beautiful and the walk/hike is well worth the effort. The fall colors is also a nice addition. Will have to come back to see the beautiful city view on top on a sunny day☺️. Gréât in rainy weather since there is cover in the portico

It's not worth it. We would not recommend it if we would have known the view or the church before climbing endless stairs. So if you really want to go there there is a bus running twice an hour near the starting point. But even if you are not walking up. I wouldn't do it again. There are nicer places in town
Jo T — Google review
Dress in comfortable shoes and trousers! We wore trousers to be respectful of the church but we saw a few visitors in shorts. When you arrive at the church, you’re gonna mistake it for being closed. There’s a small poster with opening hours. When you push the door, you’re gonna think it’s locked. The actual doors to enter are on the left and right side. Go in through the side doors! Please don’t miss this church, or the walk up would have been for naught! Your heart calms down once you step in! It indeed is a sanctuary! Follow the path on the right and you can walk right in to the altar and have a close up look at the baroque adornment in this sanctuary! 🤯😍

Interesting and beautiful Sanctuary of Our Lady of San Luca!! The way to the Sanctuary can be done walking through the Porticoes of Bologna up to the hill of the Holy Sanctuary. That journey is covered by a tourist train, which offers audio guides in different languages. So the journey is very comfortable and provides interesting historical explanations about this path, and attractive sites along the way. On the top will be possible to enjoy the art of this holy location and the great views from Bologna and the countryside around the Sanctuary.

One of the must see places in Bologna, It is located on the top of the mountain with possibility of going by the bus from Bologna center. The church is phenomenal and it is always open and definitely worth a visit athough reaching to top is really hard specially if you walk. Strongly recommended to visit specially in the sunset moment for taking nice pictures in the fantastic landscape.

Without a doubt, one of the more spectacular experiences that you can have in Bologna. The Sanctuary is situated on a hill top that overlooks the city and its surroundings. You can see much more than just the city once you've reached the top. The walk to the Sanctuary takes you through the world's longest portico (~4km), which is a great standalone experience. You can also drive up or take a tourist train (which comes with an audio guide as well) for a few Euros. There's plenty to see inside and around the Sanctuary, and for a small donation, you can actually climb the cupola, putting you on the highest peak around Bologna with a spectacular view in all directions. Once at the top, there will be someone that will explain what you're seeing.

San Luca is a really interesting place to visit. It is connected to the city centre of Bologna by way of a 3.8 km long portico lined pathway. The exterior is attractive and there are impressive features within the sanctuary. However, it is the portico walkway and views from sanctuary that is most memorable when it comes to the San Luca experience. This is a remarkable architectural structure and along with the many porticos in the city centre, a UNESCO World Heritage Site (2021). Allow yourself 3-4 hours for a visit if you plan to walk up to the sanctuary and back. There is a fun San Luca Express (Tourist Train) from Piazza Maggiore that you can use to visit San Luca if you don't want to walk up to the sanctuary.

Beautiful church with an excellent view of the countryside near Bologna. Driving up to the church is possibly outside of the 14:00-18:00 time window. There's a free parking lot a bit down the road but it seemed we were the only one who parked there. Everyone else parked closer to the church.

This was the most impressive church I ever visited. The walk up the hill was amazing. I loved every bit of it. The view was stunning. The church itself was glorious! Inside and outside! You have to go when you visit Bologna.

Amazing must-do experience while in Bologna. Mostly for the scenery and a good workout, so wear comfortable shoes if you decide to go by foot, otherwise you can take bus 58 (leaves every half hour, with a break between 14:00 till 17:00)

We arrived here before sunset and the church was magnificent during the golden hour. Unfortunately, the dome was already closed at this time and a service was going on inside. We enjoyed the appearance and surroundings anyway. You can watch sunset over the Bologna from this hill. We walked here from the Porta Zaragozza through the Arco del Meloncello and the Portico of San Luca, all along the porticoes.

All'Osteria Bottega is a cozy and laid-back establishment in Bologna that offers classic Bolognese-style pasta and meat dishes, accompanied by local wines. This intimate venue can be found in the Quadrilatero district, where you'll spot an array of these delectable dishes on display at Paolo Atti's shop or find them submerged in hearty broth at All'Osteria Bottega itself.
We had our best meal here in Italy. They made a bowl of tortellini with parmigiano reggiano for our son, it was the best dish that we’ve ever had. We will come back to Bologna to eat here again. Reservation is a must in advance.

Food itself was very tasty but there are better places. Especially service was a letdown, unfriendly and seemingly disorganized. We tried the cottoletta and tortellini based on the reviews and it was worth it but I wouldnt say that they are incomparably better than at other places in Bologna.

Amazing restaurant with farm fresh seasonal ingredients. Simple home style recipes executed with perfection. One of my favorite dining experiences in Italy period.

We are Asian tourists traveling around lovely Italy meeting lots of friendly people. We saw great reviews for this resto but sadly, I wish there was an option with 0 for no rating. When we got to the resto, we waited and the man looked at me, so I asked if we could have a table for two. His answer: NO. He looked away immediately. Nothing else, no explanation, no Ciao, did not even try to fit us in. So I asked for the reason and he said, No, we too full. There were spare tables everywhere. It was also just 1:00pm. The opening hours of the restaurant are supposedly 12:30 to 2:30 for lunch...?! The occupied tables only just got served their bread so 🤷‍♀️

Came here for lunch and we were immediately impressed by the service. It’s a relatively small place, so you do have to book in advance. We took the lasagna, tortellini, artichoke salad and the cutlet. I found the lasagna and the cutlet to have been particularly good. Great spot.

You need to call this restaurant in a week advance to get a reservation. The food is freshly prepared n made in the restaurant, n or brought from the country side. The service was excellent. The prices are very high but worth every euro. I was with my Italian family so everyone spoke Italian n communicate with the waiter n restaurant hosts. I speak English but the waiter understood me and both waiters where understanding n respectful in there services. The pasta and tortellini where made fresh at the back as so the 7 types of cold cut meats we had. We all had 3 dishes, Opener second n main course. I highly recommend to come super hungry. This is high tier Bolognese food, and highly recommend!!

Best meal we had in Bologna. Every single bite of every single dish was delicious. Cute little place so be sure to make a booking.

Heard this is the best restaurant in Bologna, we had to try and we had a delicious meal. Pastas were one of the best we’ve had, though slightly on the salty side for my taste. Service was great. Did not meet the owner like others mentioned. Flan like dessert was amazing. Make reservation ahead of time.

I was impressed by the service... really nice and attentive. The food was even good and with typical dishes from the region. It’s a small place so it is better to reserve a table in advance. Tagliatelle al ragù were delicious, even if my mother’s parmigiana is better than the one I ate here, which doesn’t mean it was bad, it was tasty but something was missing for me. Recommended for a typical bolognaise dinner or lunch 😊

Italian restaurant
This italian restaurant is a favourite with locals and tourists alike for its hearty Italian dishes. The intimate dining room features black and white photos of celebrity patrons from the past, such as Sophia Loren and Mastroianni. Prices are above average but the food is definitely worth the expense.
We were lucky enough to have gone here early and ended up getting seats even without a reservation. The food was fantastic, and the service was good. I love how they make bolognese (tagliatelle al ragu) which isn’t sour at all. The fresh pasta was great as well because its done very thin (height) but thick in width. It paired well with Sangiovese wine. 👌 I enjoyed tiramisu for dessert as well. The ambience is great if you want the traditional trattoria feel. Loved this restaurant ❤️

We went to this place because of the amazing reviews. Numerous people saying it was te best food that they have had here. I'm not sure what happened but this place isn't good. The bread that we were given was stale (we literally got there as it opened) not sure how or why this happened. The food that came out wasn't terrible tasting but it wasn't great. Very generic and lacking any real flavour. The staff were extremely friendly and fast. The wine menu had seen better days. It was taped over most of the wine they had...As far as I could see they only had one white wine available. Looking at the other food people had gotten it looked to be in the same ball park as ours. The odd thing was the place was so busy! I assume because of the reviews? Either way, unless something drastically changed I would suggest giving this place a miss .

One of the best meals I had in all of Italy. The pasta was simple but very delicious. Pretty much ordered everything the waiters suggested and it all tasted great. Decent prices too. If you walk a couple meters down the road, you can actually see the pasta being rolled and made fresh. 10/10

Look no further than Trattoria Anna Maria when in the mood for some decadent chocolate. The pasta isn't too bad either. In fact, you may just fall in love with their homemade everything! With walls full of celebrity photos with the owner, you'll find yourself understanding why they're as much a fan of Anna Maria's as she is of theirs. Tastes are absolutely delicious and unforgettable and an absolute must try when you are in the city! Prices are a bit higher than an average trattoria, as this is more of a sit-down restaurant rather than a casual stop and go as the name might suggest.

The tagliatelle was excellent as well as all other food we ordered. Recommend!
Ilan-Tal — Google review
If you're looking for a taste of classic Italian cuisine in a welcoming atmosphere, Anna Maria Trattoria delivers a solid, traditional experience. The service is friendly and attentive, making the dining experience enjoyable. However, while the restaurant boasts a traditional menu, the dishes we tried - the tortellini and tortelloni - lacked that extra spark that elevates food from "average" to "memorable." The flavors were present but not particularly exciting. Overall, Anna Maria Trattoria is a decent option for a traditional Italian meal with good service, but don't expect anything groundbreaking in terms of flavor.

The atmosphere is great, lovely waiter everyone is very nice (besides the hostess) We were lucky to find a place so order ahead of you can The staff is super friendly although they don’t have the best English we managed to understand each other Ate soup broth with tortellini and tortellini with sage and butter, and tagliatelle with Raghu and everything was delicious RECOMMEND

Went here because of the reviews but the experience was totaly an upleasant one. The famous Tagliatelle al Ragu, were a tasteless and full of fat dish. Also the green tagliatelle al ragu were the same. The biscuit salamy was hard as a rock and sweeter than sugar itself. I gave two stars because the tiramisu was a decent one. Never ever will come back here….

Traditional restaurant
Osteria dell'Orsa, a renowned eatery in Bologna, offers an inviting ambience with communal seating and local wine. Known for its authentic bolognese dishes, this nostalgic spot serves up classic favorites like ragu tagliatelle and tortellini soup. Despite the no-reservations policy causing a wait outside, efficient staff make the experience bearable. The restaurant has evolved from a punk hangout to a traditional osteria with a pasta shop adjacent to it.
Great prices and amazing food. We went at 5pm on a Tuesday and there wasn’t a line at all when it’s typically always full. The lasagna was my partner’s favorite but I loved both dishes. Would definitely come back.

In my opinion, it is one of the best places in Bologna where you can eat very well, at decent prices. The quality of the food is outstanding!! When an Italian says: "Here I ate the best lasagna ever", that means something, right? The serving staff is very kind and pleasant, the atmosphere is special, the space is thoughtful, like the architecture, traditional and modern at the same time.

The food was good but the portion was not really abundant. The polpette d’Orsa tastes flavorful and it’s a must to try here. Another amazing thing that I found was that this restaurant doesn’t charge the service fee, which is extremely rare in Italy.

Very fun, vibrant place to have dinner. The night we were here (should have made a reservation) it was a shade under 65, so they closed the outdoor seating. Good news is that there is a large room under the main dining room that can accommodate a large number of people. The wait staff was very fun and truly seemed to enjoy what they did. Great atmosphere and the food was excellent. We ended up getting the daily specials that they had along with contorni and a couple of bottles of wine. The best interaction was when one of our party ordered a salad and the waiter insisted on not bringing it until after they were done with their Secondi! He was surprised, but I had a good laugh at it and had to explain the significance. If you are in Bologna this is a must-stop for a great meal!

Who’s not reviewing this place a 5? Is it fine dining, no? Is it the best food you’ll ever eat, maybe not but it’s absolutely great. It’s a good price, big portions, and tasty comfort food - what else are you coming here for? Yes to coming, yes to the classics.

Solid 4.5 for us. We lucked out and arrived on a Friday at 12:14pm, one minute before opening. There was a huge line of people but it started moving a minute after we lined up. The outdoor seating filled up quickly but there were plenty of space indoors. It felt like a dive, but we'll discovered by tourists. We got all the local specialties, portions were not American sized but prices were good. We definitely could eat some more and the kids loved it. The Lasagna we thought was the best but everything was delicious. Service was prompt and we got our food very quickly despite the restaurant being so full.

One of the best places in Bologna to have Bolognese food. The price is quite reasonable and promises you the best food. The atmosphere is great, with friendly service and amazing food. They don’t need any prior reservations. Must try: Lasagna and Ravioli. The tiramisu is heavenly!

Food was amazing, our server was nice and very helpfull. We asked what she recommended and we were not dissapointed at all. The food was really tasty and felt like homemade. The portions were not to small and deffinetely enough for one person, but if you are very hungry i recommend ordering a starter and try the tipical meats. The desserts were delicious. And we even finished with a nice macchiato. Over all can't recommended it enough!!

Waited for nearly 20 minutes outside, no reservation. The staff was nice . Was a cold night yet the food wasn’t hot, especially the beef broth. The taste was great though . We shared all dishes. The lasagna was perfect, the ragu was lacking taste , unfortunately. The desert was excellent . Not a bad experience at all yet we expected much more. The price was fair.

Osteria dell'Orsa is one of the iconic food places in Bologna. Their dishes are super tasty, the service is extremely fast, and the staff is always friendly. Off course the place is hell busy sometimes you should wait 20-30 minutes outside to take a table but it's worth it. Prices are pretty normal for the heaven you could eat in the restaurant. It's a bit noisy place but in a friendly way.

I went there because I’ve read all the great reviews and I was not disappointed! In fact, I ate there 3 times while I was in Bologna. The atmosphere is great, the staff is friendly & funny and the food is delicious! And (most importantly, perhaps) the price is also affordable. Although we had to wait every time when we went there, it was definitely worth it. Also, we didn’t have to wait for long and the food usually came very quickly too
Nika L. — Google review
I went the Osteria off-peak time, so it was nearly empty and I didn't have to wait at all to get a table. That would honestly be one of the two only reason I would recommend the place - it has extensive opening hours compared to lots of restaurants. The menu was quite simple and dishes are cheap (second reason). But really nothing spectacular, I had to season my food again, it was not warm when it came and the wine wasn't good (although poored generously). But mainly I was disappointed with the service, the waitress was not doing any effort to seem nice or polite, which put me off a little bit. Also, I would not recommend for vegetarians, as there is only very few options (like pasta and tomato sauce, you know?).

Well deserved 5 stars the waitress was lovely and explained the dishes. Quick service. The tagliatelle with ragu is something out of this world. Best I’ve ever had. The mascarpone was great. The wine house excellent! Fruity and light.

We came to Bologna from Venice just for one day and chose this place for dinner. Best dinner in these 6 days in Italy! Highly recommended! Pasta and lasagna have rich taste and very fulfilling, cheesecake is extremely tender. I had a big glass of a good and very affordable wine, and beer was mild. Also, you'll meet a friendly service and a big variety of authentic food here. Great experience!

Would rate as a 4.5 overall, excellent food authentic, highly recommend taking a few dishes to share! The tagliatelle al ragu were excellent, as well as the tiramisu. Recommend trying the house wine as well Service had a few issues as orders did not come and had to wait 30 minutes for our first order and dishes, despite everyone being served! I recommend arriving (if for lunch) 15 minutes before opening to get first seated.
Kevin “PinkFrosties” Pahud — Google review
While this restaurant boasts a rich history, it unfortunately falls short in delivering a memorable dining experience. Catering primarily to tourists, the quality of the food has declined significantly over the years. The lack of ambiance downstairs contributes to a rushed atmosphere, with patrons quickly shuffling in and out. The pork cutlets, depicted in the provided images, fail to impress; one overcooked and the other drowned in an unappetizing cheese sauce. Even the side dishes, like the lackluster chips and salad, fail to redeem the meal. For those seeking an authentic culinary adventure in Bologna, there are plenty of superior dining options to explore."
Ciaran Gordon — Google review
We went there before the restaurant opened but there was a long line already which is a good sign for a good restaurant. Food, service and dessert were all great (esp. the pasta!!), however, giving 4 stars as I had an unpleasant experience. The wine I ordered was out of stock so an employee recommended a different bottle with the same price. When I got the receipt, they charged more for the bottle although I double checked with the employee before. There were some arguments between the employee and cashier which I felt very uncomfortable.

Great Osteria where food is giving you the feeling of a proper warm, home-cooking food. Dishes are simple but delicious, it's the place where you will be able to taste real lasagna or tagliatelle al ragù. Great value for money, even if you have to wait 15/20 minutes for a table (no reservation)
giulia marchioro — Google review
There is a huge queue to enter this place, and they do not do reservations, so if you want to visit this restaurant you have to be willing to wait. We tried 3 times, we came one day at lunch but it was so full that we gave up, then we tried at night and the guy said we should leave because they were full (he was a little rude). Then we finally went again the next day for lunch and waited for around 40-50 min, but in the end was worth it, the food was great, although the portion was not really abundant. The prices are good for the quality that they offer. The service is also good and they don’t charge the service fee, unlike most of the places in Bologna. I’d recommend this place and would come back, but would suggest the restaurant to work with reservations so they can control better the customers and also for people don’t be waiting for hours in a queue outside which is not pleasant at all.

The traditional trattoria Trattoria da Me is a hidden gem in Bologna, serving up some of the best food around in both quality and value.
I went here for lunch on a weekend day with a friend. An Italian friend of mine who lived here recommended this restaurant above all in bologna (also it won a cooking competition show in Italy which I didn’t know until we arrived in bologna). We had a reservation at 1230 and before they opened there was a line outside of people waiting to get in. When we entered they checked green pass and we were seated. The staff was nice and there were about 3 waiters running around taking care of all of the tables. The food was excellent. I recommend the tortellini and the ragù, also the pork cheek was amazing. Whole experience was good. At the end I think the staff was getting overwhelmed a bit and they forget to bring us caffè we ordered so we just left. But it is Italy you can get caffe everywhere. You pay at the front desk with the woman working there and it was an easy in and out. I would return. The food was too good not to.

I got an instant good impression on arriving at Trattoria da Me and we were not disappointed. The restaurant is cozy and service was excellent, friendly and attentive. The crescentine with cured meats was amazing, I would definitely recommend ordering for a taste of Bologna. We also really enjoyed the slow cooked pork ribs and Bolognese schnitzel. We couldn’t fit in dessert but would love to go back one day. Highly recommended!

We visited here on our second evening in the city, having booked it beforehand, and it was exceptional. Whilst one of the more expensive meals we had, this was because we ordered a lot of very high quality food, including traditional ragu, bone marrow and ribs, along with some antipasto to start. All were exactly what traditional food in this region should taste like, according to my Italian partner (who was recommended it by a friend in the first instance). The service was also very attentive, so I would recommend it to anyone visiting the city looking for an authentic experience.

Excellent food with the best lasagna (5/5) we had on our trip to Italy. The lasagna was cheesy, meaty, but light and very tasty. The egg appetizer (5/5) was unique and an explosion of flavor. The Panna cotta (5/5) at the end was also absolutely scrumptious. This was one the best restaurants we had on our trip to Bologna.

Staff were very friendly, helpful and spoke good English. I had the slow cooked eggs and Grandma's veal, both of which were delicious. This is a restaurant to explore new flavour pairings made from great ingredients. Some of these flavours are subtle, do not expect lasagna!

Had a nice dinner here and a good bottle of wine. The menu sounded much better than the actual taste of the food. The fried chicken and egg gazpacho are appetizer that are not great for sharing. The service was good but since restaurant is overbooked it’s a very quick service and you can’t stay at table for over 1.5 hrs. They ask you to leave table.

Being very close to our apartment, we were like to dine in this lovely restaurant which felt like home. Starting from serving the water in 24 bottles, Wine and food serving was very delicate. The appetizer of cheeses served with freshly fried breads, is a very tasty start. It is a must. Then enjoy your first and second course with different varieties of meals. It was totally a very memorable dinner. Thanks & will come again when in Bologna ❣️

Food was incredible. Tons of local dishes and everything we had was done perfectly. Staff was great and very helpful. You HAVE to get a reservation. Had a reservation for 7:30pm and saw the lineup for this restaurant as I got there. Was seated shortly after but was told we had a 2hr dining limit on our table. Was not expecting this - especially in Italy. We wouldn't have exceeded the dining limit but I felt like I was back home in Canada at the onset of covid at restaurants where I was told I had a 2hr dining limit. As a result we wanted to quickly order so we would have ample time to enjoy our food. Had to follow up twice to get our server to take our order and another 2x for my drink to arrive. The 2 stars is purely for the food, the cured Meats with the fried bread was great and I'd recommend ordering. The tagliatelle ragu was average at best. The ravioli was great and reminded me of something you'd find at a fusion restaurant. If you're looking for an authentic experience, this restaurant is not it. Not only did I not enjoy being told we had a 2hr limit on our table, but we were rushed out and had to stand in a shared line (along with people waiting on their reservation) to pay our bill. Short staffed and a very rushed experience. I did not even feel like ordering dessert because of it. This experiece pales in comparison to all the other restaurants we've dined at in Italy on this month long trip. This restaurant seemed to only focus on turning tables vs the whole dining experience. I wished it wasn't my last dinner in Italy as it was really disappointing.

Particularly excellent food, with the service and ambiance to match. While plenty of people might feel that this isn't "traditional" Bolognese food, I'd say that they take typical Bolognese dishes and make small modern changes to make the whole dish straight up better. Lots of traditional spots in the city are doing the same dishes from 300 years ago... this place keeps the soul of those dishes but adds updates that improve the whole experience. Everything we had was perfect, with the Tiepido being a definite "don't miss" dish (the ravioli is filled with parmesan cream with an effect like a Chinese soup dumpling. Absolutely wonderful.) The Cottoletta Alla Bolognese was also a perfect example of the classic dish. Make reservations and don't miss this place, truly one of the best meals of our visit.

The cheese ice cream was a really unique and tasty dish. The cod fish tasted just fine, but the filling kept escaping the shell. The other dishes were very good.

Trattoria da Me has a growing, well deserved, reputation as offering an fresh modern take on Italian cuisine via locally sourced, dishes at a very fair price. LIKED: The food - it was delicious DISLIKED: Well, 'Disliked' is a bit strong, rather that there were things around the service which I found quite irritating - mostly, relating to our being non-Italians. From the moment we walked into da Me, we were made to feel 'wet behind the ears' starting with not being offered a menu in Italian to being told how to eat our food. The ravioli supposedly is better appreciated if eaten with a spoon and the main course needed to be sampled in a particular sequence! I am sure that the waiter thought he was being helpful but I felt he was being presumptive and superior. Also it is not a long menu and I wanted the green salad, which incredibly had run out. How does a restaurant allow itself to run out of lettuce is a reasonable question but the unapologetic answer 'it happens' was arrogant. Also I do not think it is right that the manager sat at the next table doing her accounts. As it is said, gaining a good reputation is hard earned and more easily lost. da Me deserves the reputation that it has. However there are also signs that the restaurant believes it is better than its customers - at least ones that come from overseas, if our experience is anything to go by.

Such a lovely dinner! This is not the traditional trattoria, but rather an interesting interpretation over the classic Bolognan cuisine. Everything was delicious, with great service and ambiance. Try to come on a Sunday, as it is the only day of the week they serve their lasagna, which is the best we’ve ever had!

Saffron and cauliflower cream risotto was amazing. Strong cheesy flavour with complexity of the saffron. Agnolotti was silky smooth accompanied with a beautiful gravy sauce. Executed extremely well, especially with the thickness of the pasta being perfect. Slow cooked egg with truffle was a great starter.

Literally one of the best meals that I've had anywhere in the world. The chef cooks with so much heart and soul that the dishes are elevated past food and become almost a love letter to life and the city of Bologna. The fried bread with cured meats are to die for! The fried porcini with mushroom cream dipping sauce SO FREAKING GOOD. The one dish that's on the menu as "the way dad likes it" OMG 😭 it will put tears in your eyes. That veal cutlet tho, man... It's out of this world. The cheesy creme sauce and that slice of prosciutto 🤯 mindblowing. The wine list is pure genius. I'm going to gatekeep one dish from y'all but i'll say if you're having trouble deciding be sure to ask the wait staff for recommendations and they'll absolutely point you in the right direction. 6/5 fuegos for this place. I can't wait to fly 10 hours to get back here and eat this food and see everyone's smiling faces again! 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥

The dinner was very good, we had to book the place a few days earlier and give our card information as a deposit. The place was fully booked and the line forming before the door was huge. The service was smooth and at the highest level. Our food arrived shortly and the chesse ice cream appetizer was delicious. Next we ordered lasagna and agnolotti and it was good. For me it wasn't salty enough and the food was rather blend. Unfortunately no salt and pepper were available at the table. Then out dessert arrived and it was amazing. We left rather happy but for that price I would expect a little bit more from the main dishes.
