Basque Country

Basque Country (Euskadi) is an autonomous community in northern Spain with strong cultural traditions, a celebrated cuisine and a distinct language that pre-dates the Romance languages. The vibrant riverside city of Bilbao is a hub of architecture and design, where gritty factories and shipyards give way to cutting-edge landmarks such as the titanium-clad Guggenheim Museum along a revitalized waterfront.

Art museum
The Guggenheim Museum Bilbao, an impressive structure crafted by renowned architect Frank Gehry, is a remarkable contemporary art museum. It resides in a former industrial area of Bilbao and showcases significant 20th-century artworks from the Solomon R. Guggenheim Foundation collection. This gleaming museum, composed of titanium and glass, stands as a masterpiece according to architecture experts.
Bilbao was one of the stops for our cruise (August 2022). I didn't go inside because I'm not a big fan of modern art, but the design of the building is the main reason I visited (there's a building near my job that was designed by the same architect that has a similar roof pattern). There are some sculptures outside to see as well.
Tiffany Vaughn — Google review
The best thing about this museum is the design of the museum itself. Very impressive building. There were a few really nice pieces and the majority of the pieces were too modern for my taste. But when in Bilbao... Just pay a visit. You can go through the museum in 1,5 hours if time is an issue
Darby de Bies — Google review
Universal accessibility could have been better in terms of signs to the restaurant and back, but if you ask for help, you’ll get it. Definitely a place to visit, you don’t have to be a self proclaimed art lover to appreciate the Guggenheim. They’ve got modern, contemporary stuff, but also great engineering and figurative art. Even walking around outside is wonderful, and I’d say it’s enough to tick the bucket list if you’re a jet setter, but do pop in if you’ve got the time. No regrets. The gift store has a few cool gadgets, too! We ate at the bistro. Great service, weird seating, a bit pricey, but what do you expect… Very tasty food, and all the more energy to continue enjoying the museum and whatever comes next! Recommended as well.
Anders Eggum — Google review
Such a beautiful architecture and modern art! It was the first attraction I’ve booked before going to Bilbao. I was impressed by the design and grandeur of the art around the museum and of the building itself. There is a bit of wait for the light room but it’s definitely a must! Couldn’t recommend this more. 5/5
Daniela Andreea — Google review
The building was already amazing on the outside, but love to walk through it too. The exhibitions were quite diverse, so I like some of it. However, other things did not fully suit my taste. Currently the second floor is not open, so a 1 hour visit was all we needed. Luckily the tickets were relatively cheap. Definitely worth a visit!
Marjolein Velthuizen — Google review
The place that deserves to be visited at any time of the year. The architecture is amazing and unique. The exhibitions are of different authors and certain periods. Through the QR code, you can enter the application and benefit from an audio guide in all halls and galleries.
Anton Ivanov — Google review
A fascinating museum of contemporary art. Seeing him live is a special experience. The facade of the golden reflection is surprisingly live. Artworks of huge sizes approach the scale of a huge space and work fascinatingly. You can also view the building from the bridge above, where it works particularly fascinatingly and where the sculptural architecture comes to life in its entirety. Contemporary art becomes much more interesting in such an object
Marjan Poboljšaj — Google review
Wonderful collection of art. Just as great as seeing the art inside is taking in the architecture of the building itself and the grounds surrounding. There is a bridge right next to it that has been painted by artists it's a great place to get some photos of the city and river.
Brett Norman — Google review
Came here on a Monday Morning. It was relatively empty. No wait, got tickets and in we went. The top floor was closed for construction, so had to knock them down a star. Shouldn’t charge full price if 1/3rd of the museum isn’t open. Some cool exhibits. Ours was all cars themed, so worked for us. I would not recommend traveling a long distance for this museum. But it was fun regardless of the long trek.
Robin Mehera — Google review
An amazing museum, the building itself is a piece of art. The exhibits are displayed to great effect with plenty of room for viewing each picture. The Time structures were my personal favourites, it's rare to find something so massive inside, weird feelings of distorted volume, space and time when walking through them.
Dorian Wall — Google review
It has the name but does not live up to its fame. The architecture from the outside is beautiful. On the inside it is quite plain and cold. The collection is disappointing for a museum like this and you have to get in a virtual waiting line to visit the infinity mirrored room which takes forever. I suggest go scan the QR first (on the 3rd, visit the 2nd and 3rf floor and probably then it will be your turn for 1 minute in the room. The staff is without exception unfriendly, uncaring or uninterested at best. The cloak room is a mess, they better install lockers. Of you buy your ticket online you will save 2 euros. You can most usually do this for a time slot only 15 minutes after buying.
Jesper Bexkens — Google review
Amazing experience. Visit and walking around the gigantic museum, experiencing all the shades and reflections depending on the weather of Bilbao is an experience. As well as visiting the different exhibitions continuously researched by the Museum. The ground floor with the steel curves from Serra is a must see, no space could better fit the dynamics of the art.
Francesca Margherita Padula — Google review
Frankly speaking disappointing. Great building with terrible finishing. Walls and floors are badly done. I must admit that modern art is something I do not understand. Whole level devoted to Picasso is something. I'd say the place is spacious with interesting gift shop.
Jakub Olszewski — Google review
I supposed everything that needs to be said about this iconic building is said. I must admit after reading and seeing pictures of the Guggenheim remotely, I set the bar too high. That said, it is still an overwhelming sight. I am just glad I am able to see it in person. If you come to Bilbao, a big part of that decision is because you want to see this. And the exhibits if they are to your taste.
Keat Chiew — Google review
This one is very hyped up so when you go, you go with expectations. The ticket is not expensive. The building is an architectural wonder. The exhibitions were not as impactful or wonderful for us, to be honest. Some of the sculptures, unless made by Picasso, who would care about them? Lots of space hard to fill, you walk and walk without purpose. Quite nice outside actually. The shop is overpriced massively.
Cristi — Google review
I love the architectural structure of the building more than many of the art works being displayed there. The museum is very managed and it is safe. The workers are very polite and kind. I love Puppy and all the monuments outside the museum, I also love that you have enough space to sit and rest from touring the city before or after going into the museum. I really love Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao, Spain.
Nwanne Campo — Google review
Unique shaping and design defines this museum at the heart of Bilbao. It is tidy, clean, spacious and with good indications. It changes the content to be displayed. On-line booking is cheaper than on-site. <18 years old do not pay. Prices are ok. Unlike other museums in the basque country, child-entertainment not available: you need to entertain yourself your kids while walking the museum 😅
Jos? Antonio Gil Linares (JoseAn) — Google review
Just wow! The Guggenheim one is the most stunning museums I have ever visited, and probably one of the best in the world. The outside of the museum is incredibly beautiful, and you can easily spend the entire day just admiring the intricacies, details, and thought put into the architecture. The artwork featured inside the museum is relevant, thought provoking, and equally beautiful. I highly recommend this place! We didn’t have any trouble buying tickets at the door, however we went on a weekday so that was probably why. If you are going during high season (in the summer) you should probably consider purchasing your ticket in advance. :)
Noor Shames — Google review
Not a fan of modern art but loved the museum. Incredible architecture, make sure you walk around the outside. Very interesting exhibits, some immersive. Wide variety of art. Recommend taking a guided tour to make the visit more efficient and meaningful. Buy tickets in advance. Eat in old town afterward.
Gary Pess — Google review
Amazing architecture. I am not a modern art lover but that piece with caps amazed me. The story behind it what artist thought. Just amazing. You can get your tickets online and there won't be a que for you :). Normally there is.
Can Özdemir — Google review
Modern art just doesn’t interest me personally. Very glad that I visited the museum, but wouldn’t get tickets to go back inside. The architecture of the building along with the outdoor sculptures on the other hand were very impressive. If you’re not into modern art I’d definitely recommend visiting the Guggenheim from the outside.
Jeremy Morton — Google review
The place is massive and beautiful with lots of sculptures and arts. Inside the museum is a bar and bistro, where you can get a bite and have a rest. Near the spider sculpture, a lady that takes beautiful pictures of you in an old fashioned newspaper cover p kinda print out, set up a stand there, anyone going there should definitely get their pictures taken by her.
Amanda Nebs — Google review
My visit to the Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao was a unique and inspiring experience. From the moment I saw the majestic curvilinear architecture of the building, I knew I was about to immerse myself in an exceptional world of art. As I stepped inside, I marveled at the diversity and ingenuity of the exhibits.
Wine & Roads (INSTAGRAM) — Google review
This building is impressive. I enjoyed time there. Outside area is also cool. Reserve 2h for a visit there, you will not regret. Tickets are pretty cheap and usually available
Kin Dlutek — Google review
Beyond the exhibitions, the museum itself is a city landmark. There's no other way to put this, it has become the landmark of the city even more than the hanging bridge itself. The park that surrounds the museum is also gorgeous. The exhibitions are another thing; you can be lucky or not.
Sergio Alejandro González — Google review
So I don’t know where to start! The building itself from outside is gorgeous fabulous!! The area around is pretty and peaceful also nice for pictures 5 out of 5 Now the negative thing I don’t know if we had a bad exhibition or it’s like always like this but the modern art exhibition is just ugly and has absolutely nothing, I don’t get the modern art and I also saw the people who visited it where also more likely surprised about everything inside! And they took pictures like myself cuz I mean to look interested in it Overall if you have time and it’s to cold or to hot outside go inside and sit on a bench for 15 Euro and look outside or wait for another exhibition otherwise spend the time around the Guggenheim museum because the outside is a 10/10
Raúl — Google review
Nice exterior museum. The interior exhibits on ground floor that are like a maze are the most interesting ones. Very small infinity room exhibition you can stay in for 2’ only Gift shop has nice gift options Some of The modern exhibits were too abstract and modern for my taste. I would not call them art.! A vase on the floor with a curtain around it … 🙄
Erietta Mair — Google review
We came late in the day on a weekday. 6:20pm or so. Initially thought that 90 mins wouldn’t be enough but it was perfectly fine. Helpfully staff have said that they close the top floor first and recommended we start there. Most of the famous paintings are there, Rothko etc. A lot more of the experience is general vibe of place altogether rather than anything specific. The building is a huge part of this both inside and outside. Personally Maman statue outside was my highlight. The fire fountain scared us when we were taking Maman pictures. It’s a great laugh. I would say definitely see the outside of the building and walk the walkway on the river side in the day and night as they give up entirely different vibes. If you approach from the city it’s not 100% clear that you can see the statues on the riverside without a ticket but you can. Sunny Guggenheim is stunning from the outside. Night too. Bear in mind it is very windy outside though if you go off season. We went at 7pm ish in late March and it was chilly but fine. Our Bilbao highlight

This is not just an icon building but a symbol of how to regenerate a whole city. It has wonderful spaces inside to display art. Absolutely love its art collection may not be to everyone's immediate tastes but if you have an open mind it will prove a thought provoking and enjoyable treat. A personal favourite is the giant Richard Serra sculpture Hall, breathtaking.

Extraordinary museum of modern and contemporary art, designed by the renowned architect Frank Gehry. The museum was inaugurated in 1997 and has become a popular tourist attraction. It is credited with playing a major role in the revitalization of Bilbao, transforming it from an industrial city into a major cultural destination. The Guggenheim Bilbao is famous for its unique and striking architecture. The building is made of titanium, limestone, and glass, and its curved forms have been compared to fish scales or boat with sails. The building itself is considered a work of art, and it has become a symbol of Bilbao. It will take at least 3 hours to tour the exciting exhibition in the museum.  During the winter season, it is quite cold in the museum, so you should keep that in mind when choosing clothes.  The museum has a toilet and cloakroom for visitors.  There is also a souvenir shop, but the souvenirs are expensive and not at the museum level. The ticket price is €15 per person and tickets can be purchased online. It is also necessary to choose an appointment, that is, the day of arrival at the museum
Zoran Jovanovic — Google review
A world class art gallery around a 30 minute walk from the Old Town in Bilbao. Amazing collection of contemporary 20th century art. Well worth a visit.
Maria Smith — Google review
I’m not a fan of modern art, so it is ridiculous that I give a low ranking. The building is worth of the visit, while the exposition (in my opinion) does not justify a trip to Bilbao. Again, I’m not an expert but compared to many other more famous museums, I think outside is much better than inside.

Museums
The Museum of Fine Arts of Bilbao is a renowned art venue showcasing masterpieces by notable painters like Velázquez, Goya, and Picasso. Established in 1908, it houses an impressive collection of Spanish and European artwork spanning from the 12th century to the present day. The museum's pre-20th-century collection primarily features works by Spanish and Flemish artists such as El Greco, Zurbaran, Murillo, Goya, and Van Dyck.
Small museum but each room intelligently pairs a current artist with a similar master. Audio explained the comparisons. Be an art aficionado or go with an intentional open mind about art.
Frederic Lim — Google review
Ok museum. As of March 2022 it is free due to renovations. Best are the Basque paintings depicting life in a forgotten age
Carina Pedersen — Google review
Loved the museum! It had rooms with 2 artists each in one building, where one artist was more classic and the other more modern. The main collections were also very interesting. I would expect more variety in the gift shop.
Eleni Amprazi — Google review
A fine gallery with an elcectic mix of old and new styles, sometimes in the same room. Free to enter and some wonderful pieces sure to suit all tastes.
Stuart Stapely — Google review
The Museum of Fine Arts is a must visit if you like classic art. The building is a classic art deco building. The numerous galleries house some of the most important works of the great Spanish artists including Goya. Take your time to enjoy the art at display. Should take about 2-3 hours. Enjoy. Do remember to take you headphones.
Shalinder Singh — Google review
Interesting collection of Basque artists and some pieces of international artists (Gaugin, Van Dyck). Free of charge. The descriptions are in Spanish and Basque only, you can read them in English on the museum’s website (available under a handy QR code in the exhibition).
Froblog PL — Google review
Nice museum. Unfortunately, it is in the middle of a large renovation so only part of the exhibition is available. However, because of this there was no entrance fee, which was nice.

Bilbao's "other art museum" is definitely worth a visit. Great architecture. I enjoyed the juxtaposition of old masters (including Zurbaran, van Dyck, Goya, and others) and modern art (including Victor Vasarely).
Nils Paellmann — Google review
Absolutely delightful! The staff was incredibly friendly. I loved the collection, blending classical and modern art, including photography and at the time of my visit there was also a video installation. The ticket was free. The museum was refreshingly uncrowded, allowing for a peaceful exploration of the exhibits. Additionally, the on-site shop was a hidden gem, offering an beautifully curated books and souvenirs at surprisingly affordable prices. A must-visit!

Great art space with very interesting selection of Spanish and Basque art. Worth visiting not only in rainy days. The maginificent Gernika by Ibarrola is a great tribute to the Gernika painted by Picasso in 1937.

A pearl When you are in Bilbao to visit that other museum, and are disappointed by the G , this will pick you up. A masterful collection of spanish art. We were blown away, by the collection and some of the really rare and old paintings on display. A must see .
Hugo Bos — Google review
Free entrance. Everything in Spanish only. Mostly modern art. Quick visit.
Marta Szumiata — Google review
Worth popping in. Free and currently under refurbishment so about 8 rooms, 4 of which are filled with an inflated black and white plastic installation. Paintings from different eras and an interesting collection of Bilbao photographs.
Mari Williams — Google review
Wow. Amazing. We came when a lot of the museum was being reformed, but the pieces we saw were incredible. Free entry, absolutely worth a visit. Thanks to the Basque government.
Mobile Phone — Google review
Amazing structure.....both outside and inside. Prebooked tickets in advance so no queue, which I recommend. Worth the €5 entry (senior) you could easily spend a good half day there. Definitely recommend.. unique.
Patricia Milnes — Google review
Currently, this place is undergoing renovation/expansion. The admission is free. The current collection is not very extensive or well-known, but it is still worth a see if you are in the area. Other than couple of lesser known Picasso pieces, it is mostly lesser known and obscure Spanish modern artists and classical artists. The display itself is unique in that the classical artworks are displayed side by side with the modern artworks, creating a bit of visual tension as one peruses the museum.
John Kim — Google review
Collections like these make me realise that I am very lucky to live “next door” to the Rijksmuseum, the Van Gogh museum and the Frans Hals museum… Luckily it is free.
Frans Willems — Google review
I really enjoyed this modern art museum. I thought the installations were provocative and evocative, disturbing, and beautiful. A real cultural gem in Bilbao.
Patrick Ohearn Ph.D. — Google review
The museum was being refurbished when we visited so there wasn't too much to see. However entry is free during the works. We visited in August and there were very few visitors in with us. The spaces are nice and the work is varied though not spectacular. I'm not sure it's worth a visit while so few rooms are open even though it's free.

Fresh food market

Erribera merkatua, a historic marketplace situated near the Casco Viejo in Bilbao, offers a diverse selection of food items such as fruits, vegetables, fish, meats, bread, and pickles. This renowned La Ribera market is an excellent introduction to Bilbao's famous culinary scene and an opportunity to purchase local products.
Classic city market in a lovely location. Nestling between the old town and the river the market building is over 2 floors. One part of that has a good court that has examples of the best pintxos and wine the area has to offer. Very convenient. If on a schedule then visit for wonderful examples of local cuisine. The staff are wonderful too. Careful tho. On Sunday the proper market areas are closed with only the food outlets open
David McLean — Google review
Very popular place to eat “ pintxos” and drink beer, and local beer. Just close to the river. In a sunny day is even better. So, you can “ fish” or can compete for a place in the sun to sit. Inside is very crowded with people.
Ana Gabriela Joao — Google review
Nice old market hall with plenty of different pinxos to try. It’s like a food market and really worth visiting. Just giving 4 stars because the facilities were dirty (toilets and elevator). Other than that nice staff and good vibe. If you are with kids I recommend going before 6pm so that it’s not too overwhelming
Diego Ramirez — Google review
Visited the market a couple of times. The first was a hot Sunday afternoon and seemed busy with locals. We didn’t stay as there was nowhere to sit and the heat was unbearable.. The second time was later afternoon mid-week when there were plenty of seats and the heat was more bearable (not sure there was air con). We enjoyed a few drinks and the dessert of Bilbao. Would definitely recommend to others as there was plenty of choice and the prices were all reasonable.
Debra Ward — Google review
Do not miss this place, it’s great. There are two stories of shops (fish, bakeries, fruit, canned goods, meat…) and then a large gastro section with about 10 bars that serve pinchos. Also very nice view of the river and the other part of the town from the bar area.
Dominika Nosková — Google review
Great place for a quick bite or to enjoy sunny day lunch with friends and family. Ideally located next to tram and bus stop. Views are great. Outdoor seating is also great.
Bilal Mirza — Google review
Disappointed, lovely walking inn and looks impressive but, most of the stalls were all closed they were being cleaned, closed or repaired. Those what were there normally what you would see at any given market. We thought we would try the pintxos (tapas) but they were mainly dry and cold or tasteless. Tables and chairs could certainly do with upgrading and service could be friendlier. But, it is worth going even if to have a look.
Henrietta Garc?a — Google review
1130 Sunday still quiet. Nice shops for drinks and great selections of tapas from €2.20- 2 50. Good coffee but beers, sangria or Aperol ready! Lovely center seating area inside or you can sit outside with river views.
Vincent Oliver — Google review
The perfect place for Tapas/Pintxos. If you are in Bilbao you have to eat here at least once. You take a table and go around the 6+ Bars where you choose from an endless variety of Pintxos. Everyone will find something here and the price is verry good. Most memorable moment from our one day trip to Bilbao.
lorenz Diergarten — Google review
I loved walking around the food market, and admiring the local produce. Especially the fresh fish is very interesting, but there's a wide choice of meats, vegetables, fruits and other regional products as well. The food market also houses a couple of pinchos restaurants, and although we found bites in the city that we preferred over these, some of them were pretty good.
JanenAn deWeerdt — Google review
Cool vibrant place to eat, plenty of space to sit down. Loved the fact that difference tapas tables sell quite different tapas, so you can go around and keep trying. On another side you can do food shopping like fresh meat, fish. For vegetarians was a bit tough but managed to find several options, they also have a whole window for vegan tapas.
Kristina Kazlauskaite (Kris) — Google review
The ground floor is full of pintxo shops, authentic and very tasty. Inside was very crowded but they have spaces outside to eat and look at the city and the river. The whole experience was unique, it didn’t feel like a touristic event but more like being a part of the city.
Beliz Sertcan — Google review
Fantastic food market in the heart of Bilbao, perfect for dining in. Just find a table and then visit the range of stalls surrounding the seating area and select whichever pinxtos look good to you! We visited in late August when some of the ingredient stalls were closed for the holidays which was a shame but the food we did get to try was great.
Buddhini Samarasinghe — Google review
Visited this bustling food market on a Sunday, and it was teeming with life! Though seating was scarce and a few stores were closed, the diverse menu options and fair pricing made up for it. Delicious food, vibrant atmosphere. Four stars - a weekday visit is recommended for the best experience.

One of the best spots to eat out in Europe. Cheap and excellent quality food with friendly staff to serve you. There's also a market selling all sorts of delicious fresh seafood, meat, veggies, and much more.

A beautiful place that is very centrally located. It is busier in the morning and midday than in the evening. We went here every day during our stay in Bilbao and it was always very good.

Strange experience. Got here in late afternoon and it almost seemed to be closed. You have to enter from near the bridge and the offerings were pretty basic inside. Given the quality of food in the city I feel this space could be offering a lot more. Worth visiting it if you're in the old town area but otherwise a visit isn't necessary imo.

Wonderful fresh food market. Delicious pastries, fresh fruit & vegetables & butchers markets on the top level. Eateries on the lower level. Amazing stained glass roof. So clean & easy to get around.
Elle Renoir — Google review
A very interesting place, a combination of a market and a pinchos restaurant. At the market, you can buy various things at good prices, primarily meat, fish and seafood. In the restaurant area there are several stalls that offer a wide variety of different and interesting pinchos. There is a good selection of alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks. There is also a pastry shop. The whole ambience is reminiscent of a pub and is quite interesting. The restaurant area is covered by wifi. There is a very clean toilet. It is very cold inside in winter. There is no parking nearby, it is better to arrive on foot or by tram

This is a must visit if you are here visiting while on vacation in Bilbao or just looking to see something. This place had it all. Fine dining restaurant
Nerua Guggenheim Bilbao is an ultra-modern fine dining restaurant in the heart of the Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao, Spain. The restaurant is captained by talented young chef Josean Alija and specializes in haute cuisine with wine pairings. The venue boasts innovative gastronomic creations that make it a must-try for anyone visiting Bilbao.
Beautiful restaurant in the perfect location. Food was well presented, creative and delicious. Great service as expected. Wine pairing was well chosen and perfectly complementing the plates.
Tony Pardo — Google review
I'll preface this review by saying I've visited several restaurants on the world's top 100 list and have enjoyed all of them. Nerua was the first I did not enjoy at all. The food is oily and creamy with no freshness to cut through the fat. All of the seafood dishes leave a rancid fishy after taste in your mouth. The portion sizes of some of the dishes is very confusing (is it meant to be part of a larger meal or a stand alone dinner?). Our waitress was thoroughly confused that we wished to do the tasting menu without the wine pairing and could not explain any of the dishes to us. The only good part of the meal was the final dessert, toasted butter ice cream in a freshly baked mini brioche bun. Of all of the amazing restaurants available in Bilbao, do not come here.
Vidhi Narine — Google review
We booked based on a friend’s recommendation and are very thankful for the suggestion. The food was fresh and had our taste buds tingle through every dish. We ate at the Chef’s Table which added to the value of our booking. A must visit for any foodie staying in Bilbao.

Great value for money. Lovely food, friendly staff. The place has a Scandinavian/Minimalist style. The wine pairing worked very well.
Maria Miranda — Google review
We visited Nerua two weeks ago. To begin with the atmosphere, the ultra-modern, minimalist and plain design of the restaurant gives you a sense of hospital sometimes. I know it is alluring for some, but not my type of cookie! Service was okay for a restaurant with a Michelin Star. They were a bit lagging about things like refilling etc., which would be okay for a regular place. As to the food, the appetizers were all good except the one with the egg - which was not working as the great taste of foam on the top quickly disappeared due to the heavy taste of the egg - hence you suddenly find yourself eating a really high-quality egg! Basil-infused Gazpacho shot was particularly exceptional and fresh, should stay forever! As entrees, we ordered grilled lobster and eggplant. The eggplant was caramelised in an exceptional fashion and tasted so good. The grilled lobster was also satisfying and well balanced with its squid ink-based sauce (if i remember correctly) and good quality caviar on top. As the main dishes, we ordered Sea Bass and Tuna Belly. The sea bass was well-cooked, but the rhubarb sauce was the star! Tuna belly was below my expectations as it was cut too thinly and onion-based sauce plus fresh spring onions were a bit too much and getting ahead of the fish. As a dessert, we shared melon sorbet, which was also quite satisfying and refreshing.

Super comfortable dining. Great price / value ratio. Tasting menu 85€ presents great representation of Basque traditions and modern presentation. Very tasty! Super well organized staff. Beautiful wine list with super stron representation of Spanish wines. Nothing more expected from 1 Michelin star place.

The cuisine is both delectable and freshly prepared, complemented by an exceptionally friendly staff.
Rui — Google review
It is the usual thing from a top end restaurant, zero decor and ero music so you can concentrate on the food. but as it was only half full that meant limited atmosphere. We booked the chefs table but were told on arrival that it was not available, probably as the plac was only half full. Good service and good wine made up for it a bit.
Phil Rolfe — Google review
I've added pictures but they don't really described the experience of dining here. We had an amazing tasting menu with wine pairing. Each dish was prepped with beautiful ingredients, cooked with care and served friendly. The flavour experience was amazing and we'll balanced.
Robbert Hu — Google review
Great experience of the best the basque kitchen has to offer. Every dish was well balanced, local and paired great with the wines. Waiting staff were really kind. Seeing the enthusiastic kitchen staff as well really showed the passion of basque food. Good price/quality for a Michelin star!
Cors Brinkman — Google review
Seriously over rated. It’s a really good price point for a Michelin starred restaurant that’s listed in the worlds top 50 (2019), but unfortunately, it stops there. Service is average, waiters are genuinely friendly, but lack experience, which questions the star. The food, their signature tomato dish where they ask you to guess the different ingredients… ummm… it taste the same. Listen, the food was okay, but not amazing, so I have little idea what the other reviewers are thinking when they give this place 5 stars. Yeah yeah, I know everyone have different palates and taste buds, but I don’t really care.

Overall we had a great experience in this mythical place. The cuisine was great and the flavours were quite interesting. The chef really enjoys coffee in his dishes, which is an interesting choice. Every single plate was nicely dressed and the wine paired perfectly. Only things to improve is avoiding a couple “errors” from the staff, who was not able to help us with the choice of the wine. We had a really great time.

Fine dining restaurant
Mugaritz, a renowned restaurant in the Basque Country, gained international recognition when it was ranked as the third best restaurant in the world by Restaurant magazine in 2012. The chef, Andoni Luis Aduriz, boasts an impressive culinary background with experience at El Bulli under Ferran Adria. Mugaritz offers a unique and challenging dining experience with over 20 courses that push boundaries and experiment with flavors.
An experience, education and emotional journey. Not for the faint hearted. From the setting, to the service, and the 20 odd courses in between, prepare to be challenged. We included the wine pairings and book ended with aperitif ... it deserves its 2 m stars, possibly 3 as it is so experimental. You will not like everything, but you will like or love other elements , so just go with it,if you can. I'm limiting photos as wouldn't wish to spoil the element of surprise....of which there are many!

Our meal at Mugaritz was both memorable and challenging. The service started out a bit rocky, but was corrected and they even gave us a special additional course to make up for it. The food was wild - lips and tendons and brains, oh my. I don’t regret going, but I’m not in a hurry to go back. Also, they had black toilet paper, which was pretty cool.

DON’T BELIEVE THE HYPE. At one point, this may have been a fabulous restaurant but it’s obvious this is one master-minded joke by the chefs & the staff are in on it. We went with 3 friends to celebrate our 40th birthdays. We knew we were in for an experience but nothing could have prepared us. Each dish just got crazier and crazier. There was nothing exciting about the dishes- Most of them were bitter and soft worm-like texture. They are adamant that temperature is one of their most important ingredients (even requesting you let them know in advance if you need to use the restroom), but somehow taste never seemed to factor into the cooking process. It just got worse and worse, by the time I heard the sheep noises (don’t ask), I knew that this was some elaborate joke & we were being fooled. Save your money - unless you want to leave this restaurant feeling like you just scammed out of $500

We booked this restaurant after seeing a programme on it . Went with an open mind and travel extensively to Michelin star restaurants . I am afraid that by course 11 we could not stomach the food anymore . I cannot begin to imagine how any chef can think what is being served here is tasty or even edible, it just isn’t. The food gets worse and worse as the courses arrive and please just don’t tell me what they are supposed to be . We had the wine pairing and the staff were very serious but fine , one member of staff shared our pain and did laugh . We have never laughed so much in our life at what was supposed to be a culinary delight at great cost. If you go , It is not food as you know it , but more like a bush tucker trial . I’m a celebrity get me outta here ! 🤢🤮

This is a once in a lifetime experience every real foodie should try. Very experimental, weird at some moments but something you can never forget, it will stay in your mind, you will be coming back to it in your thoughts and recheck. If you are not interesting in participating in gastronomic experiment (and you ll be part of it) dont go. If you are open minded modern foodie - book a table, go ASAP

Good ideas. Decent service. Interesting food. Not nearly good enough for the price and prestige. In fact I would go far enough to say perhaps San Sebastián as a city is loosing its spot in my heart as the number one culinary destination in the world.
Neil Goldsmith — Google review
I give Mugaritz 5 stars because the food is amazing, although our experience was 4 stars maximum. First, we decided to go driving and to try the non alcoholic pairing. This is a mistake, as there is not a non alcoholic pairing as such, only to try 2 or 3 kombuchas, and the level of attention from the staff is very minimal when compared to the tables that have wine pairing. Also, we have long gaps with no activity and the environment was frequently cold. We had a booklet with some definitions and we were encouraged to write, but nothing happened with this is the end. I really love Mugaritz food, but I think it is a pity not to use the nice environment and ideas better to offer a more amusing experience.

Beautiful place! The restaurant is in a green farmhouse. We went as a group of 7 people.Few liked the food. We tried everything. I didn't like anything. Still, I don't regret visiting. This was also an experience. I have never been to a michelin restaurant and not liked anything.

It’s quite hard to rate this place; there is no denying the experience is one to remember; impeccable service; in a such a cozy setting. But ultimately, the food itself was underwhelming to say the least. I don’t regret going; and loved the overall experience, but I still would have liked better flavours. Too much fermentation.

Don’t let the negative reviews throw you off. Yes, it is experimental. Yes, it’s unique. But out of 23 small dishes only one was ‘mwah’, all others were (very) tasty and well-presented. I’d love to go back for the new menu.

Mind-blowing experience. We have been impressed with this year’s menu. The menu is consistent and with an outstanding wine pairing. Each dish is more intriguing than the one before. An almost 3 hours experience where we enjoyed every single bite and felt very comfortable.
Jose Bilbao — Google review
A wild experience somewhat resembling a meal. Food - It was definitely more art then food, some things tasted nice, others did not. The menu focused on texture over flavour, however, personally I found that many of the dishes had similar texture and did not offer much diversity. Overall, the artistry of most dishes was exquisite and a pleasure to view. Service - The service was very friendly, however I think additional information about the restaurant and items being served could have been provided. We also asked to have a tour of the kitchen and the wait staff said ok, but ultimately we were never invited into the kitchen for the tour. Atmosphere - the setting and the decor was beautiful, I really enjoyed sitting outside pre/post meal.

What an amazing experience! Please, don't be intimidated by one-star reviews. If you are looking for an elaborated haute cuisine, you may be disappointed. This is a place for open-minded people. You won't leave hungry. Here you don't come just for a meal, but for a memorable experience. And we definitely have one to cherish and share.

Come with 0 expectations and an open mind. A super fun, educational dining experience that breaks boundaries in gastronomy and at times stuffy fine dining etiquette. Challenges your every senses and preconceptions of dining. Definitely not for all and not the most easily accepted/ classic of flavours or presentation, but I enjoyed almost every course that was presented - be it for creativity, technique and execution, flavour combinations or the multi-sensual experience evoked. Surprisingly many Japanese inspired components and techniques. Excellent polished service, wine list and recommendations.

Fine dining restaurant
Located in the heart of Bilbao's old town, Restaurante Mina serves up fresh and inventive dishes using ingredients sourced from the local markets and farms. The kitchen is open to diners who can watch the chefs at work, and service is fast.
Having dinner at Mina is an amazing food experience which you will remember for a long time. After years you will bring back memories about the great and unexpected tastes that they served you here. Mina has a Michelin-star (of course) so my expectation was high and they matched that expectations easily. Staff is very friendly as well! Loved it here! You can choose for 10 or 14 courses, but the portion of food in total is the same. Wines are really well chosen too and is not too much at all.
Jan Willem Grift — Google review
It's nowhere near Michelin-star level.None of the dishes are made fresh on-site. They're just given a quick touch-up and plated after being preheated. The taste is so-so, and the chef isn't around either. The sauces are all super tangy, giving every dish this same kind of flavor. The service feels like it's more about students getting practice rather than professionals, and there's nothing that really wows me or leaves a lasting impression.

We came cos for the 1 star Michelin rating and had the 14 course tasting menu. The menu leans heavily on seafood. Every dish was delicious. However as I write this 3 days later , I can’t think of a dish that left a strong impression. The presentation, taste and a service were good. The 4 bottles of wine we had were amazing. Overall we had a good meal but not blown away.

We sat at the bar and had a fantastic diner at Mina’s. Every course of the 14-course tasting menu was perfect. Thanks a lot to Alvaro and his staff for the total experience!

First time in a Michelin start. Everything was explained in English as my partner does not speak Spanish. Service at the same time it was professional, it was also a closer and familiar make the experience very nice and not overly forced. I am happy with the experience, and by the end of it I can say that the price was more than paid off. I can't be more happy with the decision of booking Mina restaurant for lunch. As a side note we dat down on the bar, I could choose both bar and table, but I thought sitting down in the bar would add a touch to the experience, and I was not wrong. If you enjoy cooking, the bar was like being in a show where you can see how everything is prepared and how every small detail is fine tuned.

This restaurant was such an incredible treat. The food, every mouthful a divine new experience. The wine pairing was top notch - with an incredible local selection - that I’ll be trying to seek out personally. Staff are warm friendly & so helpful. All questions were answered with a smile. One of the best dining experiences of my life.

Warm and professional service in nice atmosphere. However the food itself is very different and could be improved. There were a lot of seafoods on the menu: mussel, oyster, smoked fishes etc...If you do not like these ingredients don't bother going. My favourites were red tea infused aubergine, scallop and the desserts...some of the other dishes tasted a bit too salty. Perhaps my friend and I were not used to these food and felt a bit unwell...

Made reservations 4 months out for the counter to observe the kitchen work. We opted for the 14 course tasting menu, came in enthusiastic and left disappointed. Of the 14 dishes on the tasting menu I enjoyed 2 of them. 305 dollars later I was left feeling like i missed something. The service itself is worth a star but not the food.

We had the tasting menu with wine and everything was delicious. The ham consommé was unique, the hake was perfectly cooked and the pork was unlike any pork I’d had before. The staff are really lovely and friendly too!

Tasting menu was absolutely incredible. Timing was perfect and size was filling. Staff was very attentive and helpful and explained about the dishes every time. We had a reservation about two weeks out. Would return for sure. Still thinking about the French toast with salt ice cream.

Definitely need a reservation for the place, so make sure you get one! We were lucky enough to get a reservation last minute. The food was delicious. The service was great, but we would have loved a more detailed explanation of the dishes, the explanation was very short and not much was said. We did the wine pairing, and we think it's worth it if you are also doing the tasting menu.

Fantastic meal at a fantastic price. We opted for the tasting menu for 58€ and added on the wine pairing for 21€ per person. The slow cooked egg dish was a personal favorite though every dish was well prepared and delicious. We were amazed by the amount of food and drinks included and left very full and satisfied.

We did their tasting menu and the experience was fantastic. First off the setting in the restaurant was great. Food presentation was amazing and everything was so unique and flavorful in its own way. Would definitely recommend if you're looking for a fine dining experience that is relatively affordable. On top of that, the staff were super nice and explained all the dishes to us and how to best enjoy them.

Amazing restaurant in the middle of the old town. Me and my friends had a spectacular food experience in this place, everything is super tasty and very well presented. The menu changes often and they use seasonal and fresh products. Highly recommended! Service could have been a little more attentive but overall a great experience. The location is also exceptional!

Amongst the tapas bars is this subterranean Michelin star restaurant. Decor: pleasant - three dining areas. Service : distant at reception, cordial at table. Quiet - 6 tables occupied (Thursday lunchtime) We had tasting menus with a glass of rioja. Eating - all very good, small portions increasing in taste and flavor from the set of 3 starters to the final pork plate - this last plate was the exception - lacking in salt and taste despite the excellent quality of the product. Two deserts,to finish. Good bread. Good coffee. Special mention for the hake and low temperature egg plates. Enjoyable foodie experience in a quiet pleasant local.
Paul Bredin — Google review
Food was really good. However, the experience was ruined from the beginning because from the bottom of one of the starters (that came in a little basket) a cockroach appeared and started running around the table. We killed it immediately and alerted the waitress who apologised and took the cockroach off the table. She also took the starter away and replaced it. However, we never received any further apology from the restaurant, any explanation or further compensation. We feel this is unacceptable for this kind of high-end establishment. The whole experience was very bittersweet as we weren’t able to fully enjoy ourselves anymore, despite the food being very good. Service was not top notch either. We struggled to catch the waiters’ attention a couple of times and they forgot one of our coffees. Overall I would not recommend with the current level of service/hygiene.

I’m a bit disappointed with the food. Based on previous reviews the expectations were higher but it was not as good as many of other places in SS. Not worthy for the price you pay. We got the tasting menu and everything was ok. Nothing special. Other dishes outside of the tasting menu looked better. Only the torrija was very good.

Great service, friendly waitress, responsive on reservations. No crazy tourist line on our visit. Great dining experience! Price is so humble for it's pristine flavors! Tasting menu €58 is FANTASTIC. We love every dish! Appetizers/ pepper pintxo are good. Spider crab in pil pil sauce are finely done. Unfortunately Iberico ran out but the replacement steak is sooo tender good and flavourful! Wine pairing are of fine quality & a tad too generous. Desserts are mind blowing. I love their yogurt, French toast is a bomb! Cod cheek is truly best part only, massive cheek muscles with decent amount of collagen attached. Cooked in thick butter garlicky gravy. Have to try them if you're in this area!

A beautiful and affordable dining experience in San Sebastián, the French toast was phenomenal. I also highly recommend ordering the tomato salad along with the tasting menu
Mandy H — Google review
Who would have known you can have basic and not delicious dinner in the best food city..? The place itself is marked as Michelin guide 2023 which is probably a fraud. We took a tasting menu of more than 5 dishes. The good one was only a chef complimentary gazpacho. The pork was not well cooked, hard to chew. Desert of cut cherries with yoghurt? Do you really need to go to a place to have this dessert? Another questionable dish was poached egg with mashed potatoes, why do you even include this dish into the menu? Fish was well done but sauce was too sour. Every dish was missing something and the last thing it is high price for nothing. Would not go there.

We first dined here in 2019 and decided to do so again on our recent San Sebastián trip. If anything the food is even better, the slow cooked egg and torrija simply brilliant as was the rest of the tasting menu. Service exceptional as was the overall atmosphere in a packed restaurant.

Really incredible dining experience. The staff and service was exceptional. You will need to make a reservation, we made a same day lunch reservation. I would recommend the slow cooked egg and French toast, they were by far the tastiest dishes.

Had dinner at this Basque restaurant with a more modern take on traditional dishes. Ordered the spider crab, squid in its ink, the flank steak, and the apple tart for dessert. All were cooked to perfection. The squid has been the best interpretation of this dish I've had so far in this area. Service was friendly and attentive, and the general atmosphere was laid back.

Nice and cozy place with delicious food and great selections of wines! We tried the tasting menu and it was absolutely amazing. All the food here is unique and delicious, with special attention paid to local products and the skill of the kitchen team.
Our last dinner in Spain. It was wonderful and memorable. The jamon was sliced to order by a very skilled staff member. The octopus, scallops, and steak (all of which we shared) were all perfectly cooked and delicious. Yogurt ice cream is made fresh daily and was the perfect end to the meal. Reservations are a must!

More of a culinary experience than simple dining. The food was great, we enjoyed the tasting menu, exquisite service from the serving staff who really took it to the next level. Varied and creative combination of courses, each one tasty and leaving you discussing the flavours. Expect to pay in the region of 150 a head for a culinary adventure paired with a zesty local vino. Worth every penny. *Loses a star on my review because the Chef delivered a 'lose weight with mindful eating' book at the end. I'm a big guy, happy in my skin, but definitely found this faux pax insulting. I'm sure it came from a well meaning place but still grinds my gears 🤐

Overall an amazing food experience. Truth be told, the metre wasn't too keen on explaining the different menus and options. Luckily we had been previously recommended to get a certain type of menu so we know what we wanted, but otherwise we would have been a bit lost in the menu. By the way, the person who advised us about this thought the same about the metre. In any case, ALL dishes were just delicious and very graciously presented. Totally worth the Michelin star it has.

We had dinner, two couples ,few day ago,and I can tell that this is one of the best restaurant I have ever been. Food was really good, prices of wine and food are really responsible, you can choose between menu’s or a la carte.food is innovative and delicious Only thing that I didn’t like is when we finish with dinner and go out from the restaurant is that nobody says hello or goodbye .Also when we came we put jacket on the shelf alone without host In that kind of restaurant I think that this is a very important thing .

Amazing food experience in the heart of the city. The Bilbao Menu offers a perfect combination of the most iconic Etxanobe dishes paired first with a smooth white for the fish and later a vigorous Rioja for the meats and dessert. A must go Michelin in Bilbao if you are on a visit or just celebrating modern basque cuisine. Will definitely come back.

We had a wonderful meal at this restaurant today. Classic basque dishes perfectly prepared. Amongst the best grilled octopus I've ever had, and an exquisite lobster salad. It is a place I would like to return to. However, they did something that we all found quite shocking... We ordered four appetisers for four people, saying we would share them. They proceeded to decide without asking us to increase the portions of each plate, giving us either 1.5 or in one case twice the amount of food for each appetizer, and charging us the extra money for each plate. The order was managed by my Spanish in-laws who are from Bilbao and have eaten at this restaurant before, so it was not a linguistic misunderstanding. Their unilateral decision amounted to 72 euros extra on the bill, and too much food to eat comfortably. We were too full to appreciate our main dishes completely and we skipped desert. If they thought we were ordering too little, it would have been fine to warn us and recommend that we order a bit more - this way we could have decided ourselves. Other than this, most of the service was very attentive and aimed to please - they suggested french fries to accompany my son's plate and gave them for free, and at the end of the meal they comped us two cognacs we ordered, showing generosity. But still, to end such a wonderful meal feeling as though they had abused our confidence was a great pity. I would still highly recommend this restaurant, just be very careful when you ask to share plates that they won't double the size. I have never had this happen before in any restaurant of any price range. After all, we were ordering one appetizer per person, which is a normal order.

We were greeted by Chef Fernando Canales at the entrance, which was very appreciated. He also came to our desk a few times for the final touches of the dishes. The service was very attentive, without being cold. My favourite dish was Ajoblanco de trufa, it was exquisite. The ice cider was also a nice surprise, it reminded me of Canadian ice wines.

I'm a seafood lover but only found this place to be 'quite nice'. Expected the carabineros to be a bit sweeter and the fish to be thicker. The beetroot paella though was the bomb. Never in a million years would I have thought I'd like a vegetarian dish more than the seafood

I have just visited for dinner with my wife and I can honestly say it was one of the best meals we have experienced. Even though it was a quiet evening the food and service was fantastic, especially with the owner coming out to serve and explain a few of the dishes and really deliver a show! My wife is pregnant and they worked around that to provide an unforgettable experience. The highlights were the anchovy lasagne, the wagyu steak and the desert. For someone who doesn't have a sweetooth, it was amazing. Highly recommend for anyone visiting Bilbao who is after a culinary adventure.
