Castile and Leon

Castile and León is a region of northwestern Spain, consisting predominantly of a high plateau ringed by mountains. Salamanca is known for its 12th-century university, Renaissance churches and baroque Plaza Mayor. Segovia’s ancient Roman aqueduct has more than 160 arches, and the hilltop Alcázar castle overlooks the city. Ávila is encircled by an 11th-century fortification wall with 82 semicircular towers.

Catedral de León

Mentioned on
Cathedral
Sights & Landmarks
The Cathedral of Leon is a beautiful Gothic building that dates back to the 13th and 14th centuries. The exterior is adorned with intricate carvings and stunning stained glass windows, while the interior features a spectacular collection of carved wooden choir stalls. The building is a popular tourist destination, and its soaring towers and ornately decorated facade are a sight to behold.
We do not have enough time to enter inside of the cathedral, but I personally like what I saw from outside. I adore the building. Pros: 1. The cathedral has a wonderful architecture and decorations. 2. The location is strategic in the city center of León. 3. Entrance accessible for wheelchair. 4. If you can find a free walking tour online, it is worth to join to get more understanding about the building. 5. We must wear a mask before entering. Cons: 1. The parking is a bit far from the cathedral.

Beautiful architecture and one of the biggest Cathedral's I've visited. I paid 6€ for student entry which includes an audio tour and a magazine. There are QR codes inside for the audio tour in a variety of languages which is very informative.

(Translated by Google) A very very beautiful cathedral. I can only recommend that every visitor to the city of León take a look at this masterpiece. The details that were added to the cathedral at that time are breathtaking. I had the great honor of being able to take part in an ordination as a pilgrim. This special event only occurs once a year in this church and was conducted by the region's bishop. The ordination attracted many priests from all over Europe to the church.

It is ranked as one of the most beautiful cathedral in spain and a popular pilgrimage destination.. No doubt it looked really nice and the architecture is fantastic
Joanna Marie Marce — Google review
Majestic and stunning cathedral from the inside and outside. Stained glass windows made the cathedral appear more grand. There was a long queue to see the crypt housing the remains of St. James and his 2 disciples in a silver reliquary. Allow for extra time if you wish to see the crypt and properly appreciate the cathedral as it can be very crowded.
CK Cheong — Google review
Phenomenal cathedral, one of the most beautiful and striking. Try to visit early in the day. Excellent audio tour with QR code. Just an amazing and beautiful place. Not to be missed.
Duncan Graham — Google review
Absolutely stunning. The cathedral has beautiful stained glass windows all over. There is a fee to enter, it is 7 euros, and as a lot of things in Spain, it closes early afternoon and reopens at 4pm. There are QR codes that you need to scan to listen to the history of the cathedral. With the ticket you also have access to the cloister.
Anais Grillet — Google review
A marvel of a Gothic Cathedral! It's arches and buttresses are constructed in such a way to allow the plethora of stain glass windows to flood the building with hues of light that change with the movement of the sun during the day.
Stuart McCleane — Google review
Not as big as Burgos Cathedral. I felt comfortable while touring the inside of the cathedral. I felt like a real pilgrim. 16.Nov.2022 <7pm closed> entrance fee 7 euros.
Jake Jeong — Google review
Beautiful cathedral but the times on Saturday and Sunday vary by day!! So on the website it said closed at 1 and today it closed at 11:30 am instead so we were not able to admire the inside… disappointed: but Leon is gorgeous! Do not miss!

Astonishing cathedral, beautiful from every angle, very rich inside, definitely worth the ticket.
M?rio V. Castro — Google review
One of the most beautiful cathedrals in Spain. We did the guided tour organized by the tourism office. Our guide Jara was excellent. I’d recommend the guided tour as a way to learn about the cathedral. It’s got some interesting stories from over the centuries.
Conor Neill — Google review
Beautiful building. The museum was closed when I visited, for no obvious reason. €7 entry fee at the door. We were kept waiting in a queue for about 20 minutes after the door opened at 16:00. Good free audio guide which you access by scanning a QR code at the entry kiosk.
Malcolm Kelly — Google review
What a stunningly beautiful work of art! Wow! The exterior alone is one of the most impressive I've seen travelling for several decades. The interior is fantastic as well. The audio guide is one of the better ones my wife and I have used during several months of going to historical sites throughout Spain the last two years. I'd recommend going during the off season (we went on a Tuesday the first week in November).

Set in a beautiful square this amazing Cathedral was built in just 50 years. Well worth a visit, I particularly liked the old stonework and statues placed in cloisters.

Impressed by the place and the way it is now so easy to obtain a guided tour right on your cell phone. Simply breathe taking. You will see what I consider one of the most beautiful places in Europe.

It cost €7 to get in with a app to explain the history. Such a beautiful building inside and out. Only go if you like history and beautiful old buildings. Fantastic glass stain windows.
Jackie Lyons — Google review
Interesting cathedral. 7€ entrance fee for adult and you get audio guide (QR code in your mobile). Nearby there is a museum, but we didn’t visit. Friday evening not very crowded. It took us appr 40-45 minutes (without museum).

Museo de San Isidoro

Museum
Museo de San Isidoro is a stunning art museum located in a beautiful city. The friendly and helpful staff take great pride in sharing the history of the monastery with visitors, offering information in English to read as they walk around. While the library may be closed at times, there is still plenty to explore and learn about the rich history of this place.
Amazing displays and artifacts in a very historic building. Good audio tour for each section using a QR code in most major languages, you don’t need printed information. Highly recommended No photos allowed but good value.

Amazing Museum to understand history and Art of Leon. Exception pieces in a very well appointed museum. Our guide Beatriz was exceptional.
A C — Google review
Really interesting to see the history of the place. The guide was good and you see quite a bit of the monastery. The highlight is definitely the painted ceiling dating back to the twelfth century which is stunning. I'd post a photo of it but photos are not allowed!
Bryan Allen — Google review
Surprised at how good this museo is. Didn’t know what to expect, but was curious about the frescoes. The museo reveals a lot about the history of San Isidoro, Leon and many other aspects of iconography and Christianity that I had not come across in the many churches and museums I’d visited on the Camino. This is an architecturally impressive place and the staff on the front desk were super kind and helpful. Total professionals.

Incredible place in a beautiful city. The staff are so helpful and pleasant to talk to. They obviously take great pride in the place and want to share it's history with visitors. They offered information in English for us to read as we walked around as well as answering our questions. Unfortunately the library was closed but the rest was quite a wonderful experience.
Bee Estes — Google review
Poorly organized museum! The staff were inattentive and often rude! We were locked in the mausoleum with a Spanish speaking guide and were not allowed to leave until they finished their tour! Half of the building is closed to public! People who run this place do not care about history or culture!
sara mashayekh — Google review
The museum is very interesting and beautiful
אביב לדרר — Google review
An absolute must and thoroughly recommended. Simply stunning visit. Our tour was given in Spanish but I overheard that there are also tours given in English. I would imagine there are fewer of such tours available so worth enquiring beforehand for any English-speaking visitors. Well worth the five euros for a detailed tour lasting just under an hour. That said, I have to agree with other commentators on here that there isn't a lot of time given so as to get a closer look at the frescoes and other artefacts - which definitely merit closer inspection - following the explanations given by the guide. For that reason alone, I've given a four-star as opposed to five-star rating.
Ben Nicholas — Google review
The English tour was great! Fun and interesting, takes about an hour, big thanks to our guide. Highly recommend it to everyone.

Stunning frescos and artefacts. Worth every penny for the ticket price. Dog friendly as well, which is unusual, but massively appreciated. One of the must visits in Leon!

Centro de Interpretación del León Romano - Casona de Puerta Castillo

Mentioned on
Museum
Specialty Museums
The Centro de Interpretación del León Romano is a museum in Leon, Spain, which tells the story of the Roman occupation of the area. The exhibits include artifacts from the early years of Roman rule, including armor, shields and helmets.
Free museum in León built on the site of Roman remains. A vast amount of effort has been put into preparing and showing the exhibits to a high standard. 3 floors with elevator available. All the information is in Spanish but visitors are given a sheet of explanation in their own language.
Alan C (AlanC-LAUK) — Google review
Small museum explaining the roman origins of the town. It does not have much in terms of original artefacts and antiquities (except for walls and their remains), but it has on display some detailed reproductions of armor, weapons and buildings from roman times. While the exhibits are very interesting for kids, the museum lacks a kid-friendly set of descriptions and explainations. The visit is completed by a short walk on the roman walls, includes a room about the modern history of the city's growth and a selection of XX century posters of the city annual celebration, all welcome additions. The temporary exhibit of gladiators' clothing was appreciable, but so many pieces were retired for "maintenance" or moved around that it was hard to link descriptions with the costumes on display.

It is a very small museum (€1 entrance fee). Not much actual Roman objects on display but you get to walk on a section of the Roman wall. Not really worth visiting if you are short of time or not interested in Roman history. There are no English descriptions provided.

A hidden gem in the city centre of Leon. I got a recommendation to visit it by a tour guide who was off duty nearby. I am so glad she talked to me because my trip was short and I did not hear about this museum. It definitely worths a visit to go to the garden, walls and learn about Leon.

Beautiful building where the old city wall plays an important role. The actual Roman displays are professionally done, but overall the content is somewhat limited. Yet, if the Roman history is new to you, certainly worth a visit.

There are several rooms divided into 3 floors, it has a staircase and an elevator. One room is free to visit, the rest are paid, but it is worth it. I recommend it because it is very interesting. The pity is that it goes unnoticed when you are in front of the cathedral. We visited Casa Mando in July 2020 as we were returning from Asturias and decided to make a stop in Leon. We ordered some classic Spanish food: Pork “patitas” with chickpeas and solomillo with vegetables. Food quality was amazing, and temperature of dishes was perfect. If you try Pork “patitas” just enjoy the creaminess and after-throat sensation that the sauce leaves. Simply magical!

The definite BEST restaurant in León. When I got to investigate what the best restaurant to have a nice dinner in León was I found Casa Mando and some others, we walked around town during the afternoon to take a look at them all and in the end we chose this one. So we got around booking a table from the website and it was probably one of the most seamless and easy ways to book a table, even if it was from their website. We arrived at the booked time and we were kindly greeted by one of the employees who promptly guided us to our table and offered to put our jackets in the closet. The environment was among the greatest I've ever seen with a beautiful decoration accompanied by a warm fireplace which gave it a really nice touch. We then were quickly given the Menu for us to choose the food and drinks and I must say, I was impressed. This restaurant probably has the most considerate prices you'll find in this town, because even though you feel like you're in the most expensive restaurant in town, it's prices are not that high! My solomillo was astonishingly amazing and it was only 20€ and the prices for a glass of wine, for example, are among the cheapest I've seen for a really good wine. All in all, it gets a solid recommendation from me if you're ever around!

Delicious food in a luxorious setting for a good price. You'll feel appreciated as a customer. No complaints.

Great restaurant. The food was amazing especially the starter with avocado ceviche, the langoustines and the fish. I would totally recommend this better + book it if you are a big group. They have some awesome private rooms

Wow! Exquisite food! Great people serving! Awesome wine! I’m on my el Camino just arrived to Leon. Took a nice hotel and just really enjoyed eating at this place. I will come back tomorrow!

Lovely bar with great cool Mahou Clasica lager and a peerless tapa of picadillo, such a quaint little bar just off La Calle Ancha, you will see people from León here enjoying life - JOIN THEM!

Got served by a very friendly lady at the bar. But for every tourist, ..begin your sentence in Spanish, ..for god's sake you're in Spain, and it's not that hard! We had a good glass of the house wine with a tasty homemade snack that came with it. For a very good price by the way! Pitty they don't have that much places to sit.

Brilliant bar run by the wonderful Jesus Gonzalez. Jesus signed my football when I was kicking it along the Camino de santiago in 2013 and I've been coming here since we first stumbled in during 2007. Full of interesting artefacts and fun people, it's a part of Leon which I love and miss when I can't make it over! I'm sure his beautiful partner does all the cooking as the food is fantastic and with every drink a different tapa appears until the full up signs. See you next year, I so miss Leon and la trebede.

Great spot for a nice coffee and a view of the Cathedral. For 1 Euro and eighty cents you get a nice coffee and a small treat. The service is excellent Highly recommend

The menu of the day - it is big and very good value for money. And it's too much food.

Amazing food!! Highly recommend the sirloin steak. It was the most tender steak my husband ever had. Though the maragato stew is a local favorite I personally couldn’t eat the pig ear, pig snout, or pig feet ( I tried), so there wasn’t much left to truly eat. Here you eat backwards. Start with main course, then cabbage with chickpeas, then soup. Desert is last. Wonderful location, atmosphere and staff.

Good product, well cooked, excellent table service and a menu for €28, including wine, coffee and dessert. (Translated by Google) The worst is the worst. We all left disappointed. €42 for not having dinner. The cold dishes, sirloin not even with a magnifying glass accompanied by cold mashed potatoes, dried cod, come on... if you want dinner don't go and if you have extra money and want to pay for nothing go. We will not return (Original) De lo malo lo peor. Nosotros no volveremos

(Translated by Google) Very good menu, great variety and very elaborate. First I talk about the pros and then what I would change. The golden food, entrecote and venison loin were very good with the right amount, perfect presence and very good flavor. I would only change or try to improve 3 little things, 1 the portion of cured meat is a little small for its cost, I have family in León and in this case I say that being typical with putting a small amount goes a little overboard. 2 I wanted to order the bluefin tuna but they told me that it is not in season, the truth is that it is very bad not to put the season of when you can order it since in my case I am honest, I sat down in this restaurant only for this dish that on top of that there was no And they didn't tell me the season so it makes me think that they could have it on the menu just because it tastes good but I can never eat it. 3 the people asking unfortunately smell like a dead dog and there was one every two seconds bothering you, this makes you choke on your food because of its nauseating smell as soon as they get closer, they should be more attentive to expelling or keeping these people away.
