Brittany

Brittany, France’s northwesternmost region, is a hilly peninsula extending out toward the Atlantic Ocean. Its lengthy, rugged coastline is dotted with beach resorts such as chic Dinard and walled Saint-Malo, built on rock in the English Channel. The Pink Granite Coast is famed for its unusual, blush-hued sand and rocks. Brittany is known for its abundant prehistoric menhirs (a type of megalith).

The needles of Port-Coton

Mentioned on
Nature & Parks
Nature & Wildlife Areas
The ecological park known as The Needles of Port-Coton, located on the western side of the island, features stunning offshore rock formations with jagged outlines that were once painted by Claude Monet. These rock stacks resemble needles and are a popular spot for panorama-lovers and photographers. The name Port Coton comes from the sea foam around the rocks that resembles cotton wool. Despite its fame as a tourist destination, this breathtaking site has maintained its charm and wilderness.
This viewpoint is by far the best in the island. This is one of Claude Monet's inspiration for his Les Pyramides of Port Coton painting series. Amazing view!

Breathtaking view and landscape. One of the most beautiful spot in Brittany. It was very windy and gray when we were there. Still, it is absolutely gorgeous. Although very famous and touristic, it kept its charm and wilderness. Certainly hopes it stays this way for a long time. Must-see place when in Brittany. Very easy to get to with the ferries.

I love to visit this types of museum. But found this one quite boring. Short to no signs in English (and only a few in German), you got a audioguide in English, but the guide itself was slow and not always that interesting in my opinion. Many many stairs into spaces and rooms that was sparsely equipped with forced facts. Would not recommend because I feel like you can visit better museums in this region and get more experiences for your time. The personnel was nice. I found no toilets while visiting.

Haute French restaurant
Le Coquillage is a French restaurant in Cancale that serves cuisine from the sea with exotic and local ingredients. Super chef Olivier Roellingers' creations have earned him three Michelin stars, though he renounced them in 2017. The restaurant has an opulent setting overlooking the Bay of Cancale, and its restaurant trolley is a must-try for chocolate lovers.
One of the 5 best meals we ever had, anywhere. We had the menu for 210 euros. Mainly seashell items. It was to die for! The freshness of the product plus the creativity of the chefs made it an incredible meal. The cheese cart also was unbelievable! Great wine also. This meal had the same quality as the one in Narisawa Tokyo or in Maido Lima.

Changed but not in the good way… We came here every year for the last 10 years or so. This was our absolute best experiences. We came back this summer in July. Only 2 menus, no desserts cart, busy service and price are more than double of what it was a year before. They should be advising about all the changes when the reservation was made. The views and colors are still incredible. Some of the dish were amazing but nothing to do with the full immersive experience under Olivier Rollinger back a year or so ago….
Olivier Baudin — Google review
Supposedly a two stars Michelin restaurant, though I did not feel it. The room was packed, which made the atmosphere rather stressful. The staff felt under pressure and the service was slow — more than 2 hours to get a starter, a main dish and dessert. We did not feel any emotion in the plates. They were good, but nothing astonishing. Good products well prepared. I really tried to connect and enjoy this up to what was at stake, but it failed me.

A break in my Michelin Marathon in Paris (follow me for the Parisian reviews and to discover the next challenge ) As usual I’ll only focus on what’s interesting. Here what’s extraordinary is that you’re teleported back in time on the spice road, sailing the seven seas, discovering rare flavors, and bringing them back to Brittany. Just like back in time you want them to be accommodated with the best ingredients you gave and yet respect both flavors. The respect for the spice equals the respect for the ingredients. Very far and very close. Very old tradition and very modern attitude (green star). Usually I don’t recommend to go for the upgrade in terms of ingredients. But in this specific case, I strongly suggest you try both lobster (the one with the Mexican sauce and the « normal «  one, a l armoricaine). Why? First because in both cases the lobster is not ruined by the sauce. You can actually enjoy it. And that because the usage of spices is so refined that it beings the best out of it in two different manner. Please note that it is not spicy at all. It’s just masterful in his usage of fine and delicate spice. Like nearly every multiple stars outside of Paris the atmosphere is a bit less casual, mainly due to the crowd and not to the team that was adorable. Definitely a top tiers two stars. A third star may ask them to rethink space wise (knowing they are also an hotel) but it’s clearly an option that I wish them to have.

I think the table should be cleaned between two dishes. Poor selection of cheeses and pastries are far from being amazing. We had the best cider of the menu according to the sommelier (and price...) but found it hardly drinkable. It's a good restaurant, but can do better

Best restaurant in the region. Breath taking view of the iconic Brittany bay.
Ines — Google review
What a fantastic experience! The location is superb, the restaurant room is very comfy and cosy (perhaps too many tables though? A little extra privacy would be appreciated) and the relatively young brigade delivers an effective, professional and friendly service. The degustation menu (No "A la carte" option) is absolutely superb with an impressive series of small plates, made of super local fresh products, wonderfully prepared and presented, and offering to your nose and palate something quite unique. I would recommend to go for the wine pairing, as the sommelier's explorations outside of the traditional paths - sometimes so classical and overused that they become boring - are worth the risk. Also worth noting, the quite extensive wine list with an impressive range of handy-picked wines at a very well controlled price, demonstrating that you can have a dinner in a 2* Michelin without breaking the bank for the wine, far away from the stellar prices typically found in such places. Long story short, stop thinking, let them drive and enjoy the moment!

Creperie
Takeout Restaurant
The group founded by Bertrand Larcher, located in Paris, Tokyo, Cancale, and also in Saint-Malo known as Le Comptoir du Breizh Cafe. They offer a variety of galettes filled with different ingredients such as the classic complete or trout-fresh goat cheese, and even Japanese-inspired maki-style galettes filled with wakame and served with tsukemono (pickled vegetables).
After having tried a few different "gallettes" & crêpes, I can say that this place takes this typical dish to another level. Thought the use of different combination of flavours and high quality products, I can say that the final product stands out. The great service as well as the open kitchen are a strong plus to the restaurant as it brings the customer closer to the kitchen and it is greatly appreciated. I highly recommend this restaurant! 🤤

Nice ambiance, sit by the bar to watch how they make them. Crepes with bulgur a healthy choice. The staff was very polite to the French people that came in after us and hey served them first with a smile! We didn’t speak French and we’re not treated politely. No smiles and slow service.

We tried 2 Galetts. Both were good, but for us the pastry flavour was too dominant, so that you hardly tasted anything of the toppings, which was a pity. The Japanese pickles were very tasty. The ambience was very nice, the service very attentive and nice.

I recently had the pleasure of eating at Comptoir Breizh Café and was blown away by the delicious crêpes! My favorite was the crêpe of magret de canard, which was cooked to perfection and filled with a generous portion of succulent duck breast. The restaurant has a cozy and charming atmosphere, and the staff were all friendly and attentive. The crêpes were made in an original way, with a variety of unique and tasty fillings to choose from. I highly recommend Comptoir Breizh Café for anyone looking for a tasty and authentic crêpe experience.
Rita Nader — Google review
A truly unique experience. The pinnacle of buckwheat pancakes (galettes sarazin) combined to an exhilarating Cider selection. Paradise for a foodie! A venue that sets new benchmarks for classics. There is a creative nippon twist to some dishes, but above all, you sense the quality of the ingredients. The cider selection is broad and the individual qualities of every bottle are well detailed. Funny enough, there is as much subtility in Cider as in Sake. Unfortunately these galettes or rolls are really filling. Better go with friends and share to discover them all. Service is perfect. Considering the quality/creativity gap with the numerous crêperies around the corner, prices are ridiculously low.
Emile Sander — Google review
This creperie is one of a kind, a unique blend of Breton and Japanese influences both in the aesthetic of the place and the food repertoire. In such high demand that you really should book ahead to make sure you can enjoy the experience while visiting St Malo.

We went for lunch on a Monday. The service was excellent, the setting lovely and our waiter spoke fluent English. The amuse bouche of avocado mousse over shrimps was delicious but it went a bit downhill from there. My starter of scallops and duck didn’t really work with the mashed leeks and ?CEO’s. My fish was not bad but my husband pronounced it all tasteless. We were disappointed but probably shouldn’t have expected so much for the cheapest menu on the least popular day and time.

The Marché aux Huîtres de Cancale is a hidden gem located by the harbor, offering fresh and affordable Cancale oysters. With only 8-10 stands, visitors can purchase daily catches at ridiculously cheap prices. It's recommended to bring a picnic set up to enjoy the oysters with some wine, or simply sit by the platform and savor the experience. Additionally, there are plenty of delicious restaurants along the road for those looking for more dining options.

One of my most quirky experiences in my life walking around the biggest oyster farm and watching the locals collect the oyster. The freshest oysters served straight on the beach. Get involved it is an experience for sure. The market around isn’t great they just sell burgers and chips. Everyone is so friendly

Excellent! If you visit Saint Malo you must to go in Cancale to eat the oyster in this Market! Various merchant sell different type of oyster at very affordable price. I suggest you take a “plateau” and buy a wine bottle in a restaurant close the market, so you can eat the oyster near the Phare in front the sea. Is a formidable experience!

At the end of the harbour, on the left are a few stalls selling fresh oysters. 🦪At low tide you have a beautiful view of the oyster farms in the water, at high tide you can enjoy the beautiful view. The stalls offer various oysters for direct consumption or to take away. The prices are very attractive and the quality is of course superb! You get the oysters on a platter that fits a dozen with half a lemon. 🍋 On the corner is a van selling chilled wines by the glass and bottles. You get the plastic glasses with a deposit. You enjoy the delicious creuses or flat Cancale oysters with a delicious glass with a beautiful view. Once you've enjoyed the oysters, throw the shells into the sea and the lemon into the appropriate waste bin. Tip start your drink time every day before dinner!

A unique and memorable experience! You will not find cheaper or fresher oysters. The wine vendor’s selection is quite good, too. The vendors accept credit card as well as cash, which is convenient. If you are visiting St. Malo, it is well worth the detour to come and experience the oyster market.

It's a little fishy, on the other hand, in service and the place deserves to be more classy for a restaurant of this range, a Michelin star all the same... (table a little damaged, paintings not great, parquet to be redone, floor a little dirty, etc.) For the price, it would be necessary to adjust and make corrections!
