Catedral de León

Mentioned on
Cathedral
Sights & Landmarks
The Cathedral of Leon is a beautiful Gothic building that dates back to the 13th and 14th centuries. The exterior is adorned with intricate carvings and stunning stained glass windows, while the interior features a spectacular collection of carved wooden choir stalls. The building is a popular tourist destination, and its soaring towers and ornately decorated facade are a sight to behold.
We do not have enough time to enter inside of the cathedral, but I personally like what I saw from outside. I adore the building. Pros: 1. The cathedral has a wonderful architecture and decorations. 2. The location is strategic in the city center of León. 3. Entrance accessible for wheelchair. 4. If you can find a free walking tour online, it is worth to join to get more understanding about the building. 5. We must wear a mask before entering. Cons: 1. The parking is a bit far from the cathedral.

Beautiful architecture and one of the biggest Cathedral's I've visited. I paid 6€ for student entry which includes an audio tour and a magazine. There are QR codes inside for the audio tour in a variety of languages which is very informative.

(Translated by Google) A very very beautiful cathedral. I can only recommend that every visitor to the city of León take a look at this masterpiece. The details that were added to the cathedral at that time are breathtaking. I had the great honor of being able to take part in an ordination as a pilgrim. This special event only occurs once a year in this church and was conducted by the region's bishop. The ordination attracted many priests from all over Europe to the church.

It is ranked as one of the most beautiful cathedral in spain and a popular pilgrimage destination.. No doubt it looked really nice and the architecture is fantastic
Joanna Marie Marce — Google review
Majestic and stunning cathedral from the inside and outside. Stained glass windows made the cathedral appear more grand. There was a long queue to see the crypt housing the remains of St. James and his 2 disciples in a silver reliquary. Allow for extra time if you wish to see the crypt and properly appreciate the cathedral as it can be very crowded.
CK Cheong — Google review
Phenomenal cathedral, one of the most beautiful and striking. Try to visit early in the day. Excellent audio tour with QR code. Just an amazing and beautiful place. Not to be missed.
Duncan Graham — Google review
Absolutely stunning. The cathedral has beautiful stained glass windows all over. There is a fee to enter, it is 7 euros, and as a lot of things in Spain, it closes early afternoon and reopens at 4pm. There are QR codes that you need to scan to listen to the history of the cathedral. With the ticket you also have access to the cloister.
Anais Grillet — Google review
A marvel of a Gothic Cathedral! It's arches and buttresses are constructed in such a way to allow the plethora of stain glass windows to flood the building with hues of light that change with the movement of the sun during the day.
Stuart McCleane — Google review
Not as big as Burgos Cathedral. I felt comfortable while touring the inside of the cathedral. I felt like a real pilgrim. 16.Nov.2022 <7pm closed> entrance fee 7 euros.
Jake Jeong — Google review
Beautiful cathedral but the times on Saturday and Sunday vary by day!! So on the website it said closed at 1 and today it closed at 11:30 am instead so we were not able to admire the inside… disappointed: but Leon is gorgeous! Do not miss!

Astonishing cathedral, beautiful from every angle, very rich inside, definitely worth the ticket.

One of the most beautiful cathedrals in Spain. We did the guided tour organized by the tourism office. Our guide Jara was excellent. I’d recommend the guided tour as a way to learn about the cathedral. It’s got some interesting stories from over the centuries.

Beautiful building. The museum was closed when I visited, for no obvious reason. €7 entry fee at the door. We were kept waiting in a queue for about 20 minutes after the door opened at 16:00. Good free audio guide which you access by scanning a QR code at the entry kiosk.
Malcolm Kelly — Google review
What a stunningly beautiful work of art! Wow! The exterior alone is one of the most impressive I've seen travelling for several decades. The interior is fantastic as well. The audio guide is one of the better ones my wife and I have used during several months of going to historical sites throughout Spain the last two years. I'd recommend going during the off season (we went on a Tuesday the first week in November).

Set in a beautiful square this amazing Cathedral was built in just 50 years. Well worth a visit, I particularly liked the old stonework and statues placed in cloisters.

Impressed by the place and the way it is now so easy to obtain a guided tour right on your cell phone. Simply breathe taking. You will see what I consider one of the most beautiful places in Europe.

It cost €7 to get in with a app to explain the history. Such a beautiful building inside and out. Only go if you like history and beautiful old buildings. Fantastic glass stain windows.
Jackie Lyons — Google review
Interesting cathedral. 7€ entrance fee for adult and you get audio guide (QR code in your mobile). Nearby there is a museum, but we didn’t visit. Friday evening not very crowded. It took us appr 40-45 minutes (without museum).

Museo de San Isidoro

Museum
Museo de San Isidoro is a stunning art museum located in a beautiful city. The friendly and helpful staff take great pride in sharing the history of the monastery with visitors, offering information in English to read as they walk around. While the library may be closed at times, there is still plenty to explore and learn about the rich history of this place.
Amazing displays and artifacts in a very historic building. Good audio tour for each section using a QR code in most major languages, you don’t need printed information. Highly recommended No photos allowed but good value.

Amazing Museum to understand history and Art of Leon. Exception pieces in a very well appointed museum. Our guide Beatriz was exceptional.
A C — Google review
Really interesting to see the history of the place. The guide was good and you see quite a bit of the monastery. The highlight is definitely the painted ceiling dating back to the twelfth century which is stunning. I'd post a photo of it but photos are not allowed!
Bryan Allen — Google review
Surprised at how good this museo is. Didn’t know what to expect, but was curious about the frescoes. The museo reveals a lot about the history of San Isidoro, Leon and many other aspects of iconography and Christianity that I had not come across in the many churches and museums I’d visited on the Camino. This is an architecturally impressive place and the staff on the front desk were super kind and helpful. Total professionals.

Incredible place in a beautiful city. The staff are so helpful and pleasant to talk to. They obviously take great pride in the place and want to share it's history with visitors. They offered information in English for us to read as we walked around as well as answering our questions. Unfortunately the library was closed but the rest was quite a wonderful experience.
Bee Estes — Google review
Poorly organized museum! The staff were inattentive and often rude! We were locked in the mausoleum with a Spanish speaking guide and were not allowed to leave until they finished their tour! Half of the building is closed to public! People who run this place do not care about history or culture!

The museum is very interesting and beautiful
אביב לדרר — Google review
An absolute must and thoroughly recommended. Simply stunning visit. Our tour was given in Spanish but I overheard that there are also tours given in English. I would imagine there are fewer of such tours available so worth enquiring beforehand for any English-speaking visitors. Well worth the five euros for a detailed tour lasting just under an hour. That said, I have to agree with other commentators on here that there isn't a lot of time given so as to get a closer look at the frescoes and other artefacts - which definitely merit closer inspection - following the explanations given by the guide. For that reason alone, I've given a four-star as opposed to five-star rating.
Ben Nicholas — Google review
The English tour was great! Fun and interesting, takes about an hour, big thanks to our guide. Highly recommend it to everyone.

Centro de Interpretación del León Romano - Casona de Puerta Castillo

Mentioned on

Specialty Museums
The Centro de Interpretación del León Romano is a museum in Leon, Spain, which tells the story of the Roman occupation of the area. The exhibits include artifacts from the early years of Roman rule, including armor, shields and helmets.
Free museum in León built on the site of Roman remains. A vast amount of effort has been put into preparing and showing the exhibits to a high standard. 3 floors with elevator available. All the information is in Spanish but visitors are given a sheet of explanation in their own language.
Alan C (AlanC-LAUK) — Google review
Small museum explaining the roman origins of the town. It does not have much in terms of original artefacts and antiquities (except for walls and their remains), but it has on display some detailed reproductions of armor, weapons and buildings from roman times. While the exhibits are very interesting for kids, the museum lacks a kid-friendly set of descriptions and explainations. The visit is completed by a short walk on the roman walls, includes a room about the modern history of the city's growth and a selection of XX century posters of the city annual celebration, all welcome additions. The temporary exhibit of gladiators' clothing was appreciable, but so many pieces were retired for "maintenance" or moved around that it was hard to link descriptions with the costumes on display.

It is a very small museum (€1 entrance fee). Not much actual Roman objects on display but you get to walk on a section of the Roman wall. Not really worth visiting if you are short of time or not interested in Roman history. There are no English descriptions provided.

A hidden gem in the city centre of Leon. I got a recommendation to visit it by a tour guide who was off duty nearby. I am so glad she talked to me because my trip was short and I did not hear about this museum. It definitely worths a visit to go to the garden, walls and learn about Leon.

There are several rooms divided into 3 floors, it has a staircase and an elevator. One room is free to visit, the rest are paid, but it is worth it. I recommend it because it is very interesting. The pity is that it goes unnoticed when you are in front of the cathedral. Coscolo Restaurante is a Spanish restaurant that serves some of the best cocido that ever ate. The quantity, quality, and kind staff make this a highly recommended option.
Very nice restaurant in a small special town. They only serve the specialty of the area which is cocido Maragato. All in all, an excellent dining experience.

Great place, super clean and comfortable. The hotel and rooms have the same style as the town, new and fresh. The bathroom and towels are super clean and the shower have a nice water pressure. The only down side is the check in time, u have to be there before 6 pm, if not u will be left on the street. 2 couples arrived after 6 and couldn't check in, it was very up setting for them. Also there is nothing open there at night or in the morning, beside the very simple coffee and little muffins include with the room. The place deserve a 5 start but the management deserve a 1 start, in a place where time has stop can't rush u to arrive in a rush, they need to up grade their system to offer a better service

COCIDO FOR EVER You make your reservation in advance and you will have best in class cocido maragato. 3 courses, first meats, thereafter vegetables an the soup to finish. And sweets. This is the only choice, no fish nor salads nor meat, just the cocido maragato. And you know what? There is no need, this is the best choice in the most beautiful mediaeval town. Really pays off visiting. And of course you will be 20 minutes away from the most beautiful cathedral in Spain and one of the most in Europe

Terrible service and bland food. Nothing, nothing special. The lady was rude to answer with wild gesticulations when a non-meat-eater try to order different from, by the way, extremely boring "cocido maragato". As a vegetarian (we called in advance to inform them of my choice), i felt humiliated when they gave me a socalled salad, lettuce and some olives. That was it! I will never ever return. What a way of ruining a day for a group of friends. Needless to say what this means for this little village's reputation!!

Bar & grill
Spanish restaurant
Ezequiel Calle Ancha, a vibrant and bustling bar and grill in the old city of Segovia, is known for its hearty regional fare, including tapas and hearty raciones (a large serving of food). It also has a robust wine list and a terrace. The service here is great, and it can be hard to fight your way to the bar upstairs. However, it's worth doing so for the generous-sized raciones.
One of the busiest restaurants in town, after a long walk of the Camino we arrived to town and we were naive by thinking we could just get it, but the host was very kind and friendly and he offered us the first table in the evening, although all was reserved few days ahead he gave us a table. The service is very nice and warm and the food is amazing as well, even if we couldn’t speak well Spanish the waitress tried to speak in English as well. Next time I’ll be in town I’ll reserve ahead and will come back there for more.

Nice restaurant located in the heart of Leon to experience Asturianismo cuisine. We ordered the menu, which was 20 something euros. The service was serviceable, and the food came in a timely manner. The stew was the highlight from the meal; everything else was decent. Both the flan cremoso and arroz con leche were good for dessert.

OMG I will not have space enough to tell you guys about this place. It is an experience for your senses and your soul. Let's start for the situation: 3 minutes walk from the Cathredal, to have a nice wander after your meal. Let's continue with the restaurant: a cave downstairs and a great dining room & bar upstairs to live two different ambients: familiar & intimate or casual with friends. Best ever: the meal. They serve huge dishes so measure well how hungry you are. We ordered the menu (21€ on Sunday, that's amazing!) ant it included a starter, a principal, dessert and wine. We chose salad, potato&fish soup and cold meat. Each of them well dressed, nice presentation and tasteful. For the principal we ordered hake & carrillada. I swear you guys, best carrillada ever. The meat was tasteful and it melted on your mouth. For the desserts, just check the pics!! Save space for them! We chose white wine (Alvarín) which works grrreat with all the dishes. Last but not least! The crew. Amazing team of waiters who will turn the experience just perfect. They are close, friendly, polite, attentive and fun. They will treat you with a balance of respect and closeness and thwy will make their best for you to enjoy the experience.

Did you book a table and you arrive with your family or your company to have dinner on time? WRONG!!! The table has been disappeared, because according the waitress " el jefe " decided to give your table to someone else. By theway, the table was booked in person, by myself in the restaurant the same morning, for the "Terraza". There's no quality in a restaurant where they don't respect their clients and they make discrimination against them, screening if they are locals or not. Unfortunately, this is the worst picture I received from LEON, a beautiful and friendly city, with a few unprofessional people, like the "jefe" of Ezequiel. I am really sorry for the costumer NOT service of this place. Maybe worst in Europe...

Sat outside here in the old city on a beautiful October night and had a great meal of lomo and lamb, fun fact you can actually order half portions here so you can create your own combination. The service was great as well!

This is a good restaurant. Service is pretty matter of fact, but that's fine, it's busy. I'm not totally sure we ordered the right things but that's our fault. I really thought the smoked lengua was excellent. Roasted red peppers and smoked beef (similar to a brasaeola) are what you are going to get if you ask for a typical dish, and while I think the quality was good, it's not that exciting.

Had dinner here and it was a wonderful experience. Brilliant service!!! The lady who served us advised us on our choices and also portion sizes - which were halved as the Leonese enjoy big portions. Loved this dining experience and are super happy that our hotel recommended this authentic Leon restaurant.

Family-run institution for estate-raised oxen & house-bottled wines served in subterranean caves.
The reports are true. It is the best Steak in the world. This was a pilgrimage For me so I asked the waiter to hit me with the full degustation and any wine they recommended. The pairing was sublime. The restaurant is carved into the stone hills like an ant farm which creates a unique atmosphere. The kids thought is was so cool. The maitre’d even gave us a tour of their wine cellar. My favourite Dining experience so far

Meat lover’s paradise! In the tiny village of Jiménez de Jamuz, close to La Bañeza, province of León, some 300 kilometers away from Madrid. Choose Ox rib steak José Gordón's selection . Best meat on planet earth and one of the most amazing private cellars in Spain where you can dine as well !

For some reason Google Maps keeps blocking my review so I will keep it short and simple. Great food, great restaurant, good service and phenomenal experience!

We had been wanting to go for a long time and it didn’t disappoint. Great service and a beautiful place, within an old wine cellar that feels like a cave and the food was amazing: we had the morcilla de buey and fried empanadas as a starter and we finished with an impressive 1.4 kg chuleta de buey. The house wine, El Chano, was excellent too. All in all a great experience and hope to come back soon!

Top notch restaurants if you like dry aged meat

The staff were very friendly. The sommiliar had good taste and chose wine that matched their steak well. I like the ancestry most. There is nothing similiar to it, not even Iberico bacon. I was surprised by the portion of the roasted red pepper. It was arranged in a nice way but ....... so little. Regarding the steak, we went for the top, the Ox chop Selection José Gordón. It's a long way to be here and we didn't want to try anyting mediocre. Well, at least we believe this one should be the best. Unfortunately, asian people are not big meat eater. The beef flavor was so condensed (this one was aged for 190 days) and I felt that I'd taken enough after I finished the first piece. I won't say anything bad about it because I think this is my personal preference. If I came with a bigger group, I would choose the shortest aged steak to do the comparison side by side. Anyway, it's an experience. After it, I understand more about what I like and won't over crush on the long-time-aged beef.

The best steak I've ever had, and I've had a few. So much so I can't look at other steaks the same way again. The rest of the courses were really good too, and I was really surprised by how good the roast silverside was. The house wine was really good too. I came all the way from Australia just for this and it was worth the flight and the extra drive from Madrid 😂

We came a long way to this one and our expectations were high. Staff friendly and well trained. However best dish was the Steak Tartar and not the famous Ox Chop Aged from the Chef Selection. It was very good but not much better than other cuts and definitely the price is the brand of the Chef more than the meat quality.
Jorge Vasquez — Google review
We had the "El Homenaje" tasting menu with 12 courses and 2 desserts and it was absolutely fantastic! Amongst the initial appetizers the Tartar with caviar was delicious and I would be back just for that. All the different cuts of cured meats were also really enjoyable and with a very distinct and unique flavour each. The entire menu is very well balanced and despite so many courses by the time you get to the main event of the José Gordon Ox Chop, you don't feel full or tired and are totally ready to enjoy the best meat in the world! We thoroughly enjoyed the entire experience and hope we'll be back some time for a special occasion.

Incredible place with some of the best Ox meat I have ever tried. You are able to see how the Ox live and are well kept, the restaurant and setting is incredibly (you are in the old winery thats carved into caves), with a wine selection of 500+ wines, matured “cecina”, and an incredibly dedicated chef. I would recommend everyone to come to live this amazing experience.
Jorge Bestard — Google review
No doubt this is one of the greatest steak experiences on earth. The flavor and meatiness of the ox steak is so intense its transcendental. Also don’t miss the cecina, salted and preserved in a cave for 4 years. Unforgettable meal!

Jose Gordon has created a magical place inside his grandfather's bodega. It feels like you're in a Christopher Nolan Directed fairytale. The most beautifull wine cellar I have ever seen. But the main reason to come here is of course the food and accompanying wine. Its not a cheap place to eat, but I can say for certain that this was, without a doubt, the best beef I have ever had in my life. The Ox chop was the star of the night, so packed with flavour, nothing comes close to that, not even A5 kobe beef (some people might disagree, of course some people have other preferences) but that chop was in a league of its own. But let's not forget the other preparations they do cause they are worth a mention as well: the roast beef, the steak tartaar, the bone marrow and their selection of cured meats was absolutely fantastic as well. They even used the ox tallow (fat) to bake a cake and they used that to make a dessert. As shown in my pictures they have got an amazing wine selection, but I decided to go with their home made red wine called El Chang and it was divine, probably the best pairing you will get with all that beef. This is something everyone has to do at least once in their life, it was so beautifull.

The food is delicious and the treatment is very close/familiar. One drawback is that the tables are too close together and in order not to disturb those next to you, people talk almost in whispers. The stew (22 euros per person with dessert) was very good and the cheesecake was exquisite. (Original) Restaurante con una decoración muy cuidada y bonita en la calle principal del pueblo. We visited Casa Mando in July 2020 as we were returning from Asturias and decided to make a stop in Leon. We ordered some classic Spanish food: Pork “patitas” with chickpeas and solomillo with vegetables. Food quality was amazing, and temperature of dishes was perfect. If you try Pork “patitas” just enjoy the creaminess and after-throat sensation that the sauce leaves. Simply magical!

The definite BEST restaurant in León. When I got to investigate what the best restaurant to have a nice dinner in León was I found Casa Mando and some others, we walked around town during the afternoon to take a look at them all and in the end we chose this one. So we got around booking a table from the website and it was probably one of the most seamless and easy ways to book a table, even if it was from their website. We arrived at the booked time and we were kindly greeted by one of the employees who promptly guided us to our table and offered to put our jackets in the closet. The environment was among the greatest I've ever seen with a beautiful decoration accompanied by a warm fireplace which gave it a really nice touch. We then were quickly given the Menu for us to choose the food and drinks and I must say, I was impressed. This restaurant probably has the most considerate prices you'll find in this town, because even though you feel like you're in the most expensive restaurant in town, it's prices are not that high! My solomillo was astonishingly amazing and it was only 20€ and the prices for a glass of wine, for example, are among the cheapest I've seen for a really good wine. All in all, it gets a solid recommendation from me if you're ever around!
