Darlington Hippodrome

Mentioned on
Performing arts theater
Concerts & Shows
Darlington Hippodrome is a theater that has been hosting plays, opera, comedy, music, dance and pantomime for over 100 years. The theater is famous for its long-running burlesque show and recently hosted a performance by Kate Rusby. The building itself is beautiful and the renovations made to it last year make it an even more valuable asset in the city.
Kate Rusby concert last night was brilliant. Was very impressed with the Hippodrome. Fantastic building & lovely renovations. What an asset Darlington has with a great venue.
Wendy Williamson — Google review
Went to tonight to see Heather's the musical. Slight issue with the tickets. They hadn't come through. However, when I emailed the venue this morning, they issued the tickets immediately via email, so the customer service was super quick! Parking was easy and signposted. The venue is lovely from the outside, and it looks very modern. Inside is very cosy and just the right size for smaller acts / performances to make it lovely and intimate! Prices weren't sky high, too. They even served coffee inside. They accepted both cash and card payments which is rare!! Staff are very friendly and helpful and plenty of toilet facilities on site. During the interval we were allowed outside.
Claire — Google review
Attended to watch Kate Rusby and Northern Soul Live on subsequent nights. The theatre is looking great. The drinks are reasonably priced. Probably could do with more bar staff on, 2nd night the pre ordered drinks weren't ready at the interval so i ended up queueing and rushing my drink anyway. They have a crazy rule that you can't stand at all during the performance ( only for standing ovation), which I understand for theatrical productions but for live bands especially those dance related it's frankly ridiculous and for Northern Soul it didn't work, people moved to the side aisles and danced- everyone was fine. It must feel quite surreal for the performers not seeing people dancing away to songs as they do in other venues - makes Darlington seem a bit restrained and miserable. However a great night both nights and I loved the 20 second hand washing song lyrics in the toilet. Great idea.
Zena Braithwaite — Google review
Got that old school theatre vibe too it. Great for any production, nice acoustics and great visibility where ever you are sat.
John Bellhouse — Google review
Brilliant venue and some brilliant things coming up too! Our grandchildren had a great time today, highly recommended 👌
Jayne Portrey-Young — Google review
Beautiful theatre that would not look out of place in London's West end. The Darlington Hippodrome is not only a theatre but a community as well.
Jordan Bell — Google review
This place has had a massive renovation since I was last here. Everything looks so modern but still keeping a lot of the original features. The staff were very friendly in helping us find our seats. There are a lot of seats and space enough so you don't feel too cramped.
Stuart Thirlwell — Google review
Just got back from watching Rock of Ages and this has to be one of the best musicals we have been too. The cast were amazing from the dancers to main characters lots of laughs and brilliant music we will definitely be back for more. Keep up the great work
Lynne Clegg — Google review
Strictly Ballroom musical finally curtain lifted after 2019 booking and a great show. The hippodrome was lovely and provided a fab atmosphere. Small bar but plenty of drink options including tea&coffee and various snacks such as crisps. What was a great relief was the space between each row. Amble leg room. Lovely bunch of staff who were so helpful.
Joanna Grayson — Google review
Nice bar with better choice of snacks than most theatres. Pleasant staff, clean toilets, comfy seats. Loses a star as they no longer have a central aisle via the stalls, meaning a long shuffle past the feet of others if you're in the middle seats. No on site parking but plenty nearby, and close to the railway station.
Victoria McIntyre — Google review
Great price and a good show. We'd love to go back. Usually we have been put off by prices which we have thought have been too high (at other venues) but we found this to be very reasonably priced.
Daniel — Google review
Great venue with welcoming staff. Interesting information boards provided a historical context to our visit. Lots of bars in a sympathetic integration of new extension into the original and impressive theatre.
Jonathan P — Google review
Great show last night Warm and comfortable theatre which feels really traditional and like a part of history
S “Samkainoa” W — Google review
Amazing place, a combination of refurbished victorian splendour, with a contemporary addition of a bar and cafe, the staff were ultra friendly. definitely worth a visit if something good on, we watched the ELO experience, which was almost as good as the real ELO.
Steve Gaylor — Google review
Great theatre, it is very old but has been refurbished. The auditorium is very comfortable and has good leg room (at least in the stalls). There is a great exhibition of stage lights in the foyer and a good explanation of how a theatre works with descriptions of theatre terms and technology. The staff were all very friendly.
Daniel Brookes — Google review
Absolutely love it here best pantomimes and shows I have seen yet
Ian Keith — Google review
Lovely theatre, not too far away from home, seats are comfortable with good leg room. Ordered an ice cream for the interval, there's a bar on every floor if you like a drink. Toilets are always lovely and clean. Staff are friendly, very good choice of shows, there's something for everyone, from musicals, plays, comedy and classical music, ballet all at reasonable prices.

Raby Castle, Deer Park & The Plotters' Forest

Mentioned on
Castle
Sights & Landmarks
Raby Castle Park and Gardens boasts a striking medieval fortress complete with art treasures, tapestries and scenic deer park surroundings. Built in the 14th century, this dramatic castle features a grand hall that can hold up to 700 knights as well as an impressive gateway and nine towers. Its opulent rooms showcase intricate architecture, exquisite furnishings and rare artworks. The castle hosts enchanting events such as Fireside Stories with Santa and the Enchanted Forest.
How beautiful! Although the castle is closed until Easter, the grounds are lovely and the dog was exhausted. There are a huge amount of deer and they were not shy at all, the shop is very pleasant and the coffee good from the cafe yurt.
Matt English — Google review
The (working) Castle is WOW, just WOW. You can take photos of the outside and show how impressive it is but the inside is so impressive, a camera will never do it justice. The staff are all friendly and helpful and very knowledgeable. Blue Badge holders can park the car very close to the Castle and all footpaths are "accessible friendly". This is a (working) Castle , not a ruin and it is definitely one for the bucket list, there is so much to see. The "Yurt Cafe" is amazing and again lovely staff. We didn't get chance to explore the Deer Park but it looks lovely. Will hopefully visit again.
Jeff Deveaux (HG) — Google review
The Castle was really interesting. Guides helpful . Plenty to look at. Note, gardens are being remodeled so none to see. So if not visiting castle you are paying a lot just to wander a large field (with, if you're lucky some deer in the distance.
George Beattie — Google review
Lovely day out. We were lucky enough to see the deer. The castle is beautiful and worth a visit. The plotter’s forest is great, just wish it was bigger! Food was delicious in the teepee. Will definitely be visiting again ☺️
Shuks — Google review
We visited for Fireside Stories with Santa and the Enchanted Forest. It was a really lovely experience and well worth the money. Felt magical from start to finish. Plenty of hand sanitiser points. The castle itself is stunning and the deer just add that special something. Plenty of toilet facilties and a good system for the cafe. Only slight issue we encountered was no soap in any of the dispensers in the toilets. Can't wait to visit again throughout next year
Stacey Dixon — Google review
Lovely day out with my 2yr old grandson. Plenty parking, picnic tables, seated areas, and a great treasure hunt for the older children. All the walkways were clean and suitable for wheelchair users and pushchairs. Never visited the gift or coffee shop as we took our own picnic, but will be returning to try the Afternoon Teas very soon.
Angel M — Google review
Went for the seasonal market and stayed for the deer park and castle, both of which are simply stunning! Granted it was a perfect May Day, but walking in the grounds is peaceful and restorative. The castle is absolutely worth a visit, with some stunning rooms, beautifully presented and staffed by the most friendly and knowledgeable volunteer guides I've ever had the pleasure to talk to. Just delightful. Add to this, good and easy (free) parking, cafe and shop, and an entrance fee that doesn't leave you feeling violated, this place is HIGHLY recommended.
Tim Holmes — Google review
Very reasonably priced attraction. Nice estate with deer roaming that are pretty tame so you can get close. Castle was also lovely with very knowledgeable staff. Nice cafe. A word of warning: if you have limited mobility the grounds can be quite uneven and you may have to walk 15-20 minutes to get to the deer. There are also no benches outside of the immediate proximity of the castle itself.
Will Lamb — Google review
Entrance fee including castle is £13. Well worth the price. Lovely walks around the grounds with herds of deers to look at. The castle is very interesting with very knowledgeable staff explaining different aspects of each room. Grounds are dog friendly.
Michael Cook — Google review
Good day out if a bit on the expensive side. The Plotters Forest was fun but smaller than I'd expected though the kids had a lot of fun. Castle and deer park were beautiful and the staff were lovely and very helpful to my wheelchair using mum.
Louise Moir — Google review
There is separate parking to the left of the main car park for disabled parking, as you drive in you should see the diversion notice! If you're a wheelchair user and wish to look around the castle, there are a few lower floor sections that you'll be diverted to by the stewards that you can look through! This does take you out of the building and having to enter around the back, there's not many rooms to see, but there are some interesting things, I personally enjoyed the carriage room with the armoury display and the open fire crackling away in the hearth. The grounds are huge and we didn't see the deer on the day we visited, as the weather was a bit damp and dreary the deer had likely found a nice dry spot in amongst the wealth of trees! The gardens were also closed as they were being updated, but from what we could see from the castle grounds, they looked very interesting and would be worth walking around when open! There was a little gift shop to have a poke around as well.
S S — Google review
Our first visit & we loved it! Beautiful grounds to walk around (a bit muddy in places) & the deer were stunning. The castle is amazing, such lavish interior, lovely art & ceramic collection. Will definitely return!
Alison Cox — Google review
I'll start with the good. Lovely grounds and a wonderful, magical castle with knowledgeable and friendly guides positioned in each of the castle's rooms with some great history to tell. The not so good? The new plotters forest was limited. Few places to sit for adults and the kids will almost definitely not use their allotted 2 hours. Will definitely go back to see more of the grounds and revisit the castle.
Daniel McNamee — Google review
Superb place to visit. Amazing 13th century ( altered over the years ) castle, fully furnished with a fascinating history. A must see if you are in the area and great day out destination if within travel reach. It’ll occupy a full day if you walk the deer park also Had a quirky, excellent, cafe in a yurt and a lovely craft shop. Guides are very welcoming and Knowledgeable. Other staff also very welcoming. Great little 30 min video that is hugely informative and interesting. Easy parking and thoroughly enjoyed the day there. Would be good if they opened the walled gardens to the general public visitors. Also, really quirky, has a cricket pitch with oak tree and huge lime trees inside the boundary rope - must be som obscure local rules/laws 🤔
Gerry McAuley — Google review
Wonderful place to visit. The new Plotters Lodge is a must for the kids. It's a magical woodland adventure for all the family. The castle and grounds are immaculate. Food and drinks are a little on the expensive side, but it's well worth it to round off a great day out, because you will definitely work up an appetite walking around the 200 acres of woodland and deer park.
Roy Blyth — Google review
A great place to walk your dog, and very reasonably priced. £5.50 (over 60s) this doesn't include visiting the castle. Lovely cafe also, lots of new things opening the end of April. I highly recommend if you are in the area.
Chris Mcgoff — Google review
What a hidden gem I visited in February so it was nice and quiet, castle wasn't open yet but I enjoyed a leisurely stroll around the ground, lots of free roaming deer to see and I enjoyed getting the camera out for some shots with family. I will definitely be back when castle is open Top tip, pay online only, no cash on gate
Ady Hattersley — Google review
Absolutely fabulous day out. We often drive past and never been before today. Amazing and informative castle visit and the kids were kept busy with the trail inside the castle and deer park. Got up close with the deer too. Took advantage of a kids go free inside the castle offer as well. Visited the plotters forest and kids had a fab time
victoria mitchell — Google review
Not a good place for us on the day. I had 3 hungry children and all that was available was sausage rolls with no ketchup. There were no indoor tables available and the weather was windy and wild so a picnic was not very pleasant... I am sure if you visit in the summer it would be lovely. On the up side the toilets were very clean.and the baby change was well equipped.
Trudi Mitchell — Google review
Excellent place for the kids to explore. Staff are really helpful. Could do with better signage though but they are still busy with the place. Very interactive and safe and we definitely will be back
tom stephenson — Google review
Honestly one of the most amazing castles I’ve ever visited. Still in tact and a lot of rooms open to the public to see. Lovely deer park as well, enjoyed a nice walk round before the house opened.
Massi Kelly — Google review
If you are in the area it's definitely worth a visit anytime of year, see the stunning castle and grounds with herds of deer and longhorn cattle. Nice food in the cafe with lots of new features coming soon!
Si — Google review
Fun place, the plotters is a great place. We went Halloween. All lit up and loads to walk around with a cafe at the top. Be prepared, if with young children to do a bit of climbing and lifting. Really well decorated..

History Museums
The Head of Steam Darlington Railway Museum is a restored 19th-century railway building located near the center of Darlington. It showcases the history of the Stockton & Darlington Railway and its global impact, with exhibits suitable for families and enthusiasts alike. The museum houses antique steam engines, carriages, and other historically significant locomotives. Visitors can learn about local rail history and enjoy child-friendly displays.
A fantastic local railway history museum nestled just outside the heart of Darlington, and easily accessible by rail from North Road station. This museum tells the story of the Stockton & Darlington Railway, and its impact on the history of Darlington as well as the wider world. There are lots of child-friendly exhibits, as well as a number of historically significant locomotives and carriages. The staff were incredibly helpful and friendly, and the museum is a great day out for families and enthusiasts alike.
Andrew Hill — Google review
Nice little museum, three locos to see and some exhibits. Costs £4.95 entry which is cheap but was not in very long to be fair as there is not that much to see. Not dog friendly either, she had to wait outside.
Debra Wood — Google review
Its the ugliest waste of public funds that could possibly have been built. The large metal structure is horrible looking from the outside, practically empty on the inside. The ticket price is ridiculous for what is on offer. Truly a vanity project for the old white men in charge who think a train museum is more important than revitalizing the areas of town that people live in an use- and desperately need help.
ines silva — Google review
This is usually my partners ideal place but I really enjoyed the history. The displays are straight forward and interesting slot of information for a smallish site but not too much information (spot on). Only downside is no souvenir book, but that's personal preference.
Mhle-_-OBliv10n — Google review
This place might not have the visual impact of the large locomotive collections at Shildon and York, but it is a fascinating place. I spent two hours reading all about the history of Darlington and how the Stockton/Darlington railway line came into existence. There's so much of interest here. The political process of getting the line approved is revealed. The composition of the train on it's inaugural journey together with details of every section of the route is graphically described. Perhaps this museum is of more interest to adults wanting a detailed insite into the founding of the railway. There are four locomotives linearly displayed along a track in the centre of the museum, including a replica of the engine "Locomotion One" but the original is displayed at Shildon. Some great black & white photos of the engines and workshops on display here, all enlarged to poster size.

Can't believe that I haven't been here before. The exhibits are amazing and being set up in an old railway station gives an even better experience.

Went to the vintage vehicle rally at the weekend, lots of different cars from different eras, well worth a look for a family day out

Such a beautiful place to visit. It was a lovely warm sunny day when I went here and it's so nice and quiet and also quite clean which I wasn't expecting, because where I live all parks are full of rubbish.

Rare beautiful park in Darlington with everything which makes it a perfect picnic spot. It has a playground, pond, kids play zone, restaurant, sitting arrangements, restrooms, large trees. There is also a small stream of river flowing along the edge of the park. Very calm and soothing atmosphere always at this park.

Lovely park! Really beautiful scenery, perfect for a solitary stroll, a walk with a friend or friends, a picnic... There's a lake with beautiful ducks, you can go feed the ducks there. The train station in Darlington is not particularly notable, but it has a pleasant atmosphere and is enjoyable to stroll around. It features well-known shops as well as charming side streets. However, it should be noted that the station is quite far from the railway station. This mainline station on the east coast boasts clean and tidy facilities with helpful staff. Numerous food and drink options are available, along with paper and book outlets for passengers to peruse while waiting for their trains.
Clean well kept station, seats dotted around ,you can get a bite to eat and a drink from the cafe ,shop etc to set you on your journey, the toilet facilities are well kept 😀

I don't think it fully deserves a whole, 4 out of 5 but since it is my home town's railway station I do have a soft spot for this building.

In recent months I have needed to use the Passenger Assistance service at Darlington Station several times, both on arrival and departure. The experience has been consistently good and helpful. The staff have been compassionate and efficient, which has been important to me as I try to accept a change in circumstances. Thank you to the LNER staff.

There is nothing especially interesting about Darlington but it has a pleasant atmosphere and is enjoyable to walk around with its combination of big name shops and interesting little side streets. Be warned though. It's a very long walk from the railway station.
Karren Huzzey — Google review
Darlington Station is busy but there are a couple of places to get drinks, sandwiches and snacks as well as a W H Smiths. There are toilets- gents on platform 1 and ladies on platform 4 - that are relatively clean with hot water and soap and hand driers that work (in the ladies anyway). Plenty of helpful staff around.
Angela Fewell — Google review
Terrible railway station, poorly lit place . I went to pick someone up at night time never been there before , train was late and I never seen any park & display notices i received a parking penalty of a £100. Pack of Robbing Bandits

A decent train station that does its job. I wouldn’t recommend trainspotting here as most trains worth seeing go down the avoider line.

Shaheens Indian is a much-loved and long-established Indian restaurant in Durham, England. With more than 1,000 happy customers sharing 'excellent' reviews, it's no surprise that Shaheens ranks first place on Tripadvisor. The restaurant pulls high scores for its food and service - making it the number one choice in Durham for an authentic Indian meal.
Second time here on visiting Durham and even better than the first time. My veggie dupiaza was the best curry I have EVER had and I only went vegetarian in January! Daughter's vegan choice was phenomenal, and hard to please husband was completely won over with his chicken tikka. A cacophony of tastes! We will be back.
Sandra Wetton — Google review
I visited this restaurant years ago and had a lovely meal, so was expecting similar. However, the quality of this meal was shocking. The madras was very watery, the onion pilau grey and insipid, the poppadums were stale, and the onion bhaji undercooked and 'gooey'. To give a balanced view, the king prawns in the watery madras were fine. I will definitely not be ordering from Shaheen's in future.
Tim — Google review
Just visited for bread Roghni Naan. The price was toooooo high for 1 naan and the quality was awful, burnt naan, cold and no taste. Picture attached. I travelled from Birmingham to visit the lovely Durham, but the visit ended with burnt Naan. I am highly disappointed.
Victorian Arcade — Google review
Disappointing - Wont Be Back - Don't Recommend - bottom of the list in Durham! We visited here for the first time recently on an evening based on reviews. The food was average and the starter was meager and dry, seeming almost shop bought with little taste, substance or content to the main course curry dish, which was quite watery in consistency. The service was generally poor with the male attendant seeming to lack basic manners or knowledge of what he was serving - he repeatedly reached over our heads to clear glasses or dishes without asking - the final straw came when we were presented with our bill before the last course had even arrived.
David Beverley — Google review
Was very poor, arrived on time, although, all dishes were heavily swimming in oil, threw most of it away, only ate some because we were hungry ... We've certainly had much better quality food, for £45 quid won't be ordering again. Wish I took photos before .... So dissapointed and let down for Mothers day treat!! Just to update further, I tried all ways to leave a review on Just Eat to make folk aware but it would not let me submit?

Alongside several other musical friends, I hit the place for an early doors tea on Saturday before heading to the cathedral to perform some Haydn and Mozart. I scored the chicken tikka tandoori sizzler, a slab of keema naan and a bottle of health restoring Cobra beer. We all heartily agreed that the grub was top drawer. We visited on the instructions of our female colleague who'd done her online research and noticed the restaurant scored highly, and rightly so too. Service was friendly, down to earth and swift enough (the place was fairly quiet at this time) and my platter was loaded with cooked-bang-on chicken. If you seek ace curry: go to Shaheen.
John Rudkin — Google review
Food was absolutely awful. Cold, bland, absolutely no flavour, even the chips were rotten. Mint sauce & yoghurt tasted as if it had soured. A main missing from order which whne we rang inform them they offered a refund which in hindsight was good as i can only imagine it would have ended up in bin with the rest. Extremely disappointed as we spent £60 for it to be in the bin. 5 * for atmosphere as I was at home!!

Shaheens came highly recommended by my daughter we chose this for dinner last night. Absolutely phenomenal - the favours were intense and wonderful. So many options that make me want to come back and try more. Service was great and would highly recommend.

Wonderful! Thank you not just for the food but for the lovely service and the willingness to adjust food to our taste. As an example- my Wife likes her onion bhaji with quite well cooked onions- no problem! Price-wise this was genuine value- pickles, popadums, starters, mains, parathas and a side together with drinks for less than £60.00. Thank you- we will return!

Four of us went to eat at Shaheens in Durham. As we entered the atmosphere was warm and welcoming. The staff were very knowledgeable and keen to make sure our meals were spiced correctly for each individual. The food arrived promptly and was truly delicious. I had lamb dupiaza and it was the best I've ever had. The staff were very attentive and pleasant. It was a great curry experience I would highly recommend this restaurant. Pricewise we were pleasantly surprised too.
Jane Lee — Google review
Visited on the 02.04.23, was the first Indian to charge us more for a korma sauce without the meat in it as they won’t serve it as a side and you must take it as a main, this was disappointing as we visit Indians all the time and this pricing isn’t right. And further on from their reply - yes it does say this on the menu but I have been to Indians all over the country and this is the only one that does this so far so it’s something that puts you off. The food overall was not to bad, and the staff were really friendly.

It's a family run business, everything handled within family members. The food was good but the owner lady is just awesome, she is really friendly and a great hostess and she cooks the food herself. Will definitely recommend to try them once.

Great place to visit, made even better thanks to Pav who looked after us for the 2 hours we were there. I had the burger which was really good. I stuck with the red stripe to drink but the rest tried quite a few of the cocktails (I don't believe they had one they didn't like) . The place was spotless and the rest of the staff were good also. The only down side was the distance to the toilets, which was up a number stairs

Came here a few times for brunch now, and it's really great. There is a big range of drinks to choose and the food is decent too (less choice for vegetarians but there are a couple). The staff are helpful, and most are very customer driven which means you really get the most out of it. I've heard stores of other bottomless brunches where they restrict how many drinks you can order which sort of defies the point. The only thing is, the rules around drinks are unclear. Sometimes if there's an expected wait on cocktails, they will allow you to order a prosecco for while you wait. Sometimes they won't. We were told both in one brunch.

Another fab brunch at turtle bay Durham. Service was amazing, very attentive and quick. Choose to have food later into the brunch which was no issue. Drinks were flowing. Sat up stairs which was nice and the server Carly was amazing. Very helpful and friendly. Nothing was too much for her. Her and the barman were very quick and kept the drinks coming. Always get recognised by management too, he is always friendly and welcoming. Well done

Busy and energetic with a cool interior. The staff is nice but maybe in a way that is too over the top. The food is insane, tried the big vegan grill down, which was far better than any vegan English breakfast I’ve had, and the sweet corn roti roll was delicious too.

Friendly staff, food was ok, nothing to complain about but not amazing. I'd say a touch on the expensive side for portion size. Only one lager and one pale ale on keg, neither are great offerings for quality beer fans. They have some other beers in bottles but they have all been rebadged with Turtle Bay so you don't actually know what they are charging nearly £6 for. So in summary it's an ok visit, you will probably enjoy it but not somewhere I would seek out especially to revisit

My recent visit to this Turtle Bay branch blew all of the others out the water! Carly had such a positive and friendly attitude and was so attentive with us making sure we had everything we needed. The food was amazing, especially the new additions to the menu and I love coming to Turtle Bay for the happy hour since there’s so much to choose from. Props to everyone at the Durham location!

Mediterranean restaurant
Portofino is a split-level eatery with stunning marina views, offering a varied menu and decor influenced by North African and Mediterranean styles. On a visit without a reservation, the requirement of a deposit seemed unnecessary to some. However, they were seated at an appealing table and found the menu to have plenty of options. One friend experienced delays in receiving her drink but quickly resolved the issue with another staff member. The food itself was described as absolutely delicious, with generous portions and a lovely atmosphere.
Apart from the steps a lovely meal lies ahead. Been a few times already and enjoy the restaurant very much. Well priced food with a great choice and selection of fixed price set meals. Nice views of Quay harbor.

Visited today 4/8/23 with 3 friends for lunch . Hadn't booked a table as a £5 deposit is required which we don't think is a good policy. We were seated at a nice table, menu is very varied with lots of choice. 1 of my friends waited quite a long time for her drink & had to ask another member of staff where it was . Food was absolutely delicious, portions are very large, lovely atmosphere.would definitely return , the only downside are the drinks as in most places these days they are too expensive.

Went for a Christmas meal with colleagues and was treated to an excellent feast. Starter was a very generous helping of potato skins with choice of dipping sauce, but the other starters I saw made we want to try them too. Garlic mushrooms looked amazing as did the chicken goujons. I went for traditional Christmas dinner and wasn't disappointed. It was piping hot, delicious and very filling and I would have no problem having the same again and recommending it wholly. Having said that the steak and chips my colleague had also looked amazing so I would be tempted to try that on my next visit ... And there will be a next visit as the food was excellent. Service was outstanding as the servers took our names and ensured we all got the correct meals and kept us supplied with drinks throughout. As the food was so delicious and filling none of us could face a sweet so I can't comment on those, but based on everything else I would definitely be happy to try one if I could manage to save a bit of room for it. The only downside was I got Whammageddoned during my meal ... But as I'm in a happy Christmas mood I won't knock a star off for that. 😉 Plenty of parking outside and not too far from the Centre of Hartlepool if you fancy a short walk. The only downside I could see (for some) would be the access via a fairly steep metal exterior staircase. This wasn't a problem for me but it may limit others ability to get inside.

Modern European restaurant
The Cellar Door is a modern european restaurant with stunning views of the river Wear and Elvet Bridge. The food here is mouth-watering, with seasonal ingredients sourced from all around the world. If you're looking for a unique dining experience, this is definitely it!
Popped in Wednesday afternoon to take advantage of the lunch set menu as it looked good value for money. Food was excellent service was good. Id definitely be back.

The menu is diverse & very tasty meals are served here. My wife had the Rack of Lamb which were served over ratatouille with mint yogurt. My son had the Beef Wellington & I had a vegetarian Smoked King Oyster Mushroom dish. We were all more than pleased with our meals. The setting is cool too, it’s in a 13th Bakery cellar. I highly recommend this restaurant.

First time visitors to The Cellar Door. We we were downstairs in a lovely stone room. All 8 of us had the Sunday dinner. Outstanding plate of food! Lamb was beautifully rare. Plenty of veg. The crowning glory was the biggest yorkie I've ever had!!

We love coming to Cellar Door on a Sunday to enjoy their Sunday Dinners. It’s such a treat, we enjoying visiting as a couple but also have invited family and friends who aren’t from the area to visit as the food and staff are brilliant. Gluten free options are available and the staff are knowledgeable in this area. As a Yorkshire lass, I can confidently say the Yorkshire puddings are amazing, bigger than your head but amazing! We have always booked our table in advance to avoid disappointment.
Hannah Boynton — Google review
Friendly efficient service especially considering our group size but food flavours were a little basic. Definitely seemed to have gone for quantity over quality and made the courses sound far more complex than they were
Matt Thompson — Google review
Nice restaurant and decent food, we both had Beef Wellington at £30 each. The service was great, Sophie was very helpful and even gave us recommendations of where to visit on our stay. We were sat near a till and next to stairs so lots of people passing by which wasn't ideal. Only real gripe was paying £34 for a screw top bottle of red that was cold. I'd say its not too much to expect red wine at room temperature.... Overall would recommend

Outstanding A narrow door, off the street. Leads you down a set of old stairs, with the Cellar Door sign above the entrance. The first floor (downstairs) opens in to an airy room with pine floors and simple, seating. We wnt down another set of stairs in to a smaller room, with a stone cave like, cellar seating area, with soft lighting. The service was excellent, friendly and attentive. We came on Sunday and had 2 courses for £23. The food was outstanding! Beautifully cooked and presented. The Sunday lunch was gorgeous and highly recommended This place is a must visit when in Durham. Or even if you are 10 miles away!!! 😍

Staff very welcoming and friendly and food was delicious. One of the best restaurants County Durham has to offer. Been here a few times and not been disappointed. Good choice of food and drinks menu and also a lunchtime special menu served from 12 till 6. Reasonably priced fine dining.

Best restaurant in Durham, went twice already for dinner with colleagues and we will definitely be paying the Cellar Door a third visit. Had meat on both occasions and it was stellar, will try fish next. Atmosphere is cosy, food is excellent, wine card has a good selection
Tommaso B. — Google review
The cellar door was a lovely little find offering a good selection of dishes, and seeming a popular spot among locals with the vibrant atmosphere. Of all the options to have a Sunday Roast, this appeared to be the best on Google Maps and I wasn't disappointed. Firstly you could tell the freshness of the produce with the amazing taste and texture of the meet and veg. As someone who is from London I had an expectation on a Sunday Roast "from up north" and it more than delivered, with me almost not finishing my plate. When the plate arrives, you'll know where I'm coming from. Overall I had a very good time at this restaurant, and would gladly revisit from the great food, atmosphere, and extremely friendly staff helping me have an chilled yet enjoyable Sunday, and being the cherry on top of the cake finishing off a very good weekend away in the North East of England.

Came with my student son. Incredible food. Please give a medal to whoever invented the shepherds pie roll! My lamb fillet was pink and melted in the mouth, his beef wellington looked amazing. Great gravy on both dishes. Really interesting wine list, great to see a few American wine choices on there. Staff were good. We were on a table right next to the top of the stairs and there was quite a lot of coming and going which was a bit distracting - I would’ve been annoyed if it had been a romantic date! But we hadn’t reserved so can’t complain. Pricey but overall worth it for such good food.

First time having food here, me and my girlfriend went for a date are waiter was John he was the best waiter I’ve had he made the night perfect I couldn’t of asked more, I did find a hair in my dessert but he controlled the situation and I understand things can happen. Beef wellington was perfect and again a great thanks to John he was amazing.

Excellent food. Particularly love the steak tartare, which isn't always on the menu, but the chef was happy to prepare for me (with notice) even while it wasn't on the menu! Good choice of wine and drinks. Quickly becoming one of my favourite places to eat 👌🏼

Fish and chips takeaway
Fast food restaurant
Bells Fish & Chips is a top quality take-away restaurant with a touch of class, perfect for treating yourself to a classic British dish. The restaurant is very clean and the staff are friendly and welcoming, making it an ideal place to eat. There are plenty of options on the menu, as well as some great local beers to pair with your meal.
Great service. Food was lovely. Usual chip shop menu. Quirky fish tank so can watch the fish swim if you have to wait on food. Staff all very friendly. Very clean shop. Free parking directly outside.

Bought gluten free fish and chips for a family member. When opened inside the box was saturated with fat. The chips were hard as if under cooked. The batter on the fish was soggy. It was as if the fish had not had the fat drained off it. Having eaten a small taste of the fish and chips my family member vomited. I was very disappointed having spent quite a lot of money on the total order to have this happen. It's hard enough for a gluten intolerant person to find decent food to eat without things like this happening. Perhaps staff need retraining in frying gluten free food I hope others will not have the same thing happen to them. Unfortunately I will not buy from Bells again.

They have a separate fryer for gluten free fish and chips. It is not available before 4pm due to energy costs. Good sizes for haddock, cod and chips. The gluten free battered cod was very good. Very friendly and helpful staff. Overall a great experience. They also take telephone orders.

I visited recently and though the fish it appeared large, it was very thin at one end and ate it like a crisp. The batter was tasty the fish was boneless, I was allowed to place my own salt and vinegar on the fish, a blast back to the pre-pandemic era. but I don't think I'll be in a rush to revisit the premises, which are really smart for a fish and chips shop.
Durham Telly — Google review
Fish was quite good but the chips should have been better. At least half were odds and ends which seemed to have been cooked twice. The others were very nice and we both enjoyed them. A bit more quality control would easily make it 5 stars

Not great. We have been before and will go again. Called 23rd Nov 1.15pm. Fish was perfect and lovely. Chips were re-fried (part cooked and then cooked again) sorry don't expect this from Bells. The lady who served me was not very polite. She wrapped my order and I had to ask her to unwrap them as we were to eat them now and wanted salt and vineger. She only had to ask before wrapping. Hopefully 5 starts next time.

Great fish and chips as usual. Freshly cooked to order and stayed hot until we made it home to eat them. Option to eat in or takeaway. A great option for enjoying Durham’s market place whether as a tourist or a local.

Chips were crispy and tasty but the fish was really small and not worth the money. Service from the young lady was great and the shop is very stylish. Disappointed in portion size.
Gail Smith — Google review
As far as I'm concerned it's the best fish an chips in the area. They are always very busy, but the staff deal with everybody very quickly. Fish is getting quite expensive, but it's very well cooked and somewhat flavoursome. Best of all they always tend to have ginger beer.
Alisdair Marshall — Google review
Arrived at 7.45 pm to be told everything was turned off even though closing time is 8.15 pm. I'm sure the closing time is when the cooking stops. Seemed like the staff just wanted to get away early and weren't bothered about customers. This is why the food industry is in such a poor state. Won't be eating the over priced garbage again

Great classic fish and chip restaurant in the heart of the beautiful city of Durham. But is it good enough to make my list of the best fish and chips in the UK?? … So here’s the lowdown 1. The restaurant is cosy but has a lovely atmosphere, comfy seating and the buzz of happy customers 2. The service was great. Had a short queue to be seated but the waiting staff were friendly and courteous, always making sure you were happy 3. The food was high quality. Tasty chips, perfectly cooked using a good quality potato. The fish was good. Our party had both cod and plaice. The plaice was cooked in batter and was light and full of flavour. The battered cod was cooked well but less flavoursome than the plaice or haddock. Cooked in beef dripping and you could tell. The portions were generous too. And you are offered bread and butter as a side as standard. 4. The cost …. For a good sit in fish and chip dining experience this was fairly priced and comparable to most others in the same league. 5…. So …on the list?? Definitely….it’s great food served in a great location…what’s not to like?

I wish I never bothered

I went tonight @ 8.05 pm first visit, went to till to be served. Three staff members two talking and one mopping the floor, not one staff member asked what I would like. They looked at me and still continued talking. Stood 5 mins still not acknowledged. I walked out and took my service elsewhere.
