Point Lobos State Natural Reserve

Mentioned on
State park
Outdoor Activities
The Point Lobos State Natural Reserve is a coastal state park featuring stunning views of the ocean and a variety of wildlife including sea lions. The park has also been home to whaling ships in the past, making it a great stop for visitors interested in history and natural beauty.
It was one of the best places I have been to near by in Bay area. The scenarios is very beautiful ever part of hike there are some beautiful views of beach and water you can see. One of the best part was we could see the Harbor seals relaxing on their own private beach. It looked like it was made specifically for them. No one has the access to go there to that particular beach. There were so many good places such as China Cove, Hidden beach and Gibson beach. Over all it’s a very beautiful place worth the visit. Just 10 dollars entry fee.

Really nice. Park rangers are friendly and assist with information. Sea Lion View Point had even a ranger with a looking glass so we could see them on a rock far away. Restrooms are clean, the trails are well done, and views are absolutely stunning, even on a foggy day we’ve chosen. Worth going for a hike and the views. Yes, the pictures are real, views look like straight from a painting. Round photo was phone against the telescope eye… forgot my good camera.

Beautiful park with amazing trails. Arrive early, especially during weekends or holidays. Parking fills up quickly. If parking is full, park along the highway and walk in for free. Plenty of trails. None are too difficult. Docents around to answer questions. Restrooms throughout the property. Gives great views of the coastline

Loved the park, its cedar grove, and multiple vista views of the Pacific ocean! Trails are great, they meander through cedar forest directly to the ocean where you can spot sea lions, sea otters and lots of birds. The parks gets full during peak hours, but can park on the side of highway. It is an extra 5 minute walk to the park, but this way no need to pay the park entrance fee.

Great place to take kids or go for a couples hike. Trails are easy and well maintained. A few areas are required a smidgen of athletics but nothing major. Great views of the California coast. For those with kids there are tide pools that are great for kids to explore. Be aware parking fills up VERY fast so be ready to park on hwy1 and hike in.

This is one of my favorite places to go on the coast. I love the hiking here as it’s not all a flat path- parts have roots and steps, and other things which to me makes the hike more dynamic. The views are fantastic. There are otters, lion seals, deer, and numerous birds here to see at different points on the hike. I recommend bringing binoculars if you can for better views. Since it’s on the ocean it is windy, so be prepared for that. Entrance fee is $10 and is good for all state parks for that day. Staff has always been friendly. No pets allowed. Decent kept flush toilets at several parking areas

Love this place! Such a beautiful location. But there are only very few parking spots in the park. We went by 8.30am and parking was available at that time, but was full by 9 am on a holiday. Better to avoid public holidays/ long weekends. Anyway, roadside parking was available. Restrooms were clean and well maintained.

I haven’t been here since I was 10 years old. It was beautiful then and even more beautiful again. The ocean front is incomparable with endless tide pools to discover and endless views. Wild flowers are everywhere. We saw sea creatures and sea lions. What an amazing place!

This park is a gem. Not very large but packed with beautiful coastal scenery. We enjoyed some simple hikes, none are far. Everything is beautiful and peaceful. I also want to compliment the volunteer docents. I met two who were so friendly and eager to share their knowledge and enthusiasm for the park. Don’t miss this place!

This state park is so well kept. On a warm sunny day, it’s so beautiful to walk along the trails. Stop by the visitor center so that you explore the park to its fullest. Time your visit so that you can catch a low tide. We were lucky to catch one and it was so worth it.

Fun exploration experience! Check out the active tide pools and stumble across a Harbor Seal nursery cove. Beautiful rocks, water, and plant and animal life. Very well maintained trails.

Park on the street to save $10. The lot was full anyway on Sunday and Monday of President's Day weekend. There's one beach that you can relax on, otherwise you can explore the trails all day! Great for sea otter and sea lion watching. Bring your binoculars for a better view. It was super windy the days I went, so wear layers because it was super cold!

One of a Kind 🌊 Point Lobos is stunning capturing all types of terrain and rock structures. Beautiful wildlife and ocean views. A hike for the whole family but dress appropriately because this little slice of heaven is surrounded by poison oak all throughout the trails. Come ready to explore. For an active person you can hike the whole park in less than 2.5 hours non stop. The park has lots of simple hiking throughout and trails. Theirs some harder trails off of whalers cove and I’d say those trails aren’t well maintained with over growth of poison oak. But the trails further down the park by China cove are more well taken cared of. They have limited wheelchair assessable trails. Just note this park is extremely popular and over crowded on the weekends. The Parking Lot fills up within the first hour of being open and you’ll see a parking lot full sign and hundreds of cars parked outside the park on the side of the highway. So definitely come prepared and bathrooms are limited and scarce during peak hours. Highly recommend going during the weekdays to be able to truly enjoy the park and serenity.

I had less than an hour to pop into Pt Lobos but will be visiting again soon for a day trip. What a gorgeous place with so many different views. I used to scuba dive from Whalers Cove many years ago.

We stopped here on a Tuesday morning excited to see the local wildlife, trees and flowers. I am happy to say that this is by far one of the best state parks we’ve visited. We only had about an hour and a half of hiking time on our visit, but there is easily enough to see over several days. After we entered, we were approached by Point Lobos docents—Becky and John—who offered us a free guided tour. They asked us how much time we had and customized the hike to ensure we’d be back on time. They took us on the Cypress Grove, Sea Lion Point, and Sand Hill trails. Becky and John did a fantastic job of pointing out the local wildlife and foliage and explaining the history of the area, including explaining the medicinal plants and uses. You can borrow binoculars at the beginning of the hike to spot animals. Using these, we enjoyed spotting sea otters sitting on kelp beds in the ocean. Another docent had a scope set up for showing sea lions and sea otters, and taught us about the differences between them. This was such a fun, beautiful, and educational hike. I only wish we could have stayed longer and I look forward to returning. If I could give this park 6 stars, I would!

We arrived early on a Tuesday morning in January, right after the park opening, and found open parking spots at Cypress Grove hike. This hike is beautiful. Saw a pod of dolphins, sea lions, pelicans, and seals. Decided to follow the interior trail to the end of the park and walk the ocean side back to the car. Parts of the seaside trail are closed due to erosion, and you have to walk on the road a bit, but still lovely views. We also saw deer when away from water. Total was just under 6 miles. There are a few steep staircases, tree roots, and rocks, but otherwise, it is a manageable hike for those in relatively good shape. We packed a light daypack with water. There are no services inside the park. Cell reception is poor. Download offline maps before you go. The pamphlet handed out by rangers has no map. The $10 entry fee was good for the entire day, and we used it again at Pfeiffer State Park, a bit further south on the same day.

We're seniors and hiked most of the available trails on both north and south sides and out to the end, and were very impressed with not only the magnificent views and colors, but also how the trails are well-maintained and fairly easy to navigate. Definitely visit this gem if you're in the area, you won't be sorry! Heads up: No pets or drones allowed.

Absolutely gorgeous! Highly recommend the Cypress Grove and the Bird Island Trails. A good variety of parking available, public bathrooms, and well built and maintained trails makes gorgeous sites available to all. The Bird Island Trail has ADA accessibility.

One can take a scenic drive or walk along the Carmel Beach and surrounding cliffs, where there are several benches that offer stunning sunset views. Along Scenic Road, visitors can enjoy the charm of the lovely homes in the area. However, it's important to be mindful of directions as wrong turns can easily be made after passing through the Carmel 17 Mile Drive gate.

Carmel River State Beach is a great place to go for a walk or to surf. It's also home to many different types of birds, and people can often spot sea lions and other marine life. The beach is very dog-friendly and offers a tranquil environment perfect for taking in the sights and sounds of nature.
We had two amazing days at this beach with our toddlers. The hike down is easy, as there are stairs, and the beach isn't far from parking. The tide pools at the beach are full of amazing sealife and provide hours of exploring. An artist was there painting both days and I captured some truly marvelous photos. It's a really great spot.

Really perfect place for kids to play. The water is warm and clean, and there are a lot of pelicans resting in the river. Besides, you may explore the sea creatures in the rock such as crabs, hermit crab, fish, and sea urchin. You can also relax and enjoy the sea view through the fun trail. The kids set the crabs and urchin free before we leave. The parking lot is with limited spots, but you can park along the street. The restroom is quite clean. The most important thing is that the signal here is strong.

Beautiful Beach. The bathrooms have a solar panel on top, that was pretty cool. There is a nice short walk up to a cross that people have put some roses around. The sound of the ocean here was perfect. On one side is the ocean and there is a lagoon across the sand.

Beautiful beach with waves crashing in and lots of pelicans. Probably not the best for swimming but a great place to kick back and relax and have a picnic.
Mike Algar — Google review
Gorgeous, less popular and easier to find a parking spot versus the other beaches.

Absolutely breathtaking. Perfect spot for a visiting family to spend a day at the beach. Not many shells, but tons of cool rocks for kids to "discover". Wildlife is plentiful, large rocks to climb, and perfect weather make it a great spot!!

Amazing beach, nice weather, cool river, plenty of rocks and seagulls, and less busy than the neighboring Carmel Beach, this place is amazing!
Abhay Asopa — Google review
A gem of a beach at the end of scenic drive. It's changed somewhat for what I am guessing climate change. The river now runs through the sand. So there's not much room as there was. Parking lot is small. It's not overloaded with tourists like the other end of scenic. Still a nice place to hang out. Pics from 2020

This little beach is stunning and clean. We drove nearly 4 hours to come here so my son could play his guitar by the ocean. That's how peaceful it is. Plenty of sand to set up for the day while the family plays in the water. People enjoy building structures with driftwood. It's small and quaint with clean bathrooms and free parking. Parking is quite limited. I did have to circle several times until someone finally left. We arrived around 4 pm so you'll have better parking availability if you go early..You have to drive through neighborhoods to get here. Enjoy the stunning architecture and landscaping of all the individual homes as you drive through. I think I enjoyed the houses more than the beach!

Saw so many pelicans, and a seal! Stayed a safe distance to give them space. :) Cool wooden hut structures made of drift wood.

Although parking is tricky at this location (roughly 20 spots) it is worth making the trip. I recommend avoiding weekends at all cost. This beach has Carmel river access AND beach access. The river side is shallow and is perfect for children and new swimmers to get their feet wet. The beach may not be suitable for smaller children as the warnings are posted due to the drop off close to the beach. A lifeguard tower is present, but it wasn't manned on a Monday. There is no shade so bring a beach tent or umbrella. It can get very windy so tie them down well. I saw people with kites, canoes, boogie boards, and even some on paddle boards to explore a little up river. Water depth varies by season and when the river is actually flowing it deltas into the ocean and currents may be too strong. Currently (early August) the river and ocean are separated by a large sand dune. We enjoy coming here to soak up the sun and let the children play risk free in the shallow waters of the river.

Nature & Parks
Garrapata State Park is a pristine state park located on the Big Sur coast, with two miles of beachfront and coastal hiking. The park also protects rocky headlands, quiet beaches and coves with flower-filled valleys and canyons lying inland.
Beautiful State Park with the best of wild flower season around the Bay Area! Found atleast 15 varieties of blossoms. This and added to a mystical Redwood section, with flowing stream that you come across every now, this park has so much to offer in such a short hike. Would love to visit this place again and again and still feel like I haven't seen it all..

AMAZING EXPERIENCE! one suggestion though. I and fam with a friend visited the park for Calla Lilly Valley. There is no sign when arrived and we lost the wifi connection. It will be helpful to make a sign and placed it right there when people take the short trail from the road. Under than that i did not know the area and we were amazed .we will come more often now. Really recommend this Park and Calla Lilly Valley!

This was a fun hike, however, it is a tough hike. It is a climb to the top that will take time, even if you are in great shape, you'll find yourself stopping to catch your air. Take lots of water and some food. Nature will great you the whole way, so look out for poison oak. Approximately 4 mile round trip.

This is a beautiful park! I loved the trails especially along the ocean. I didn't get very far on the non ocean side but there were a ton of cacti, it was nice and unexpected. I did find a tick on myself so be careful. The only downfall is parking on the side of the road, it can get busy especially if your trying to cross. Nice thing is you don't have to pay. We would definitely come back. And for families, it is a nice outing and there are short trails. Keep in mind it is not stroller friendly and dogs are not allowed.

Beautiful view from big Sur (u.s 1). Right now due to landslide most part is closed. But few view points are open from carmel-by-sea
Naiti P — Google review
Absoluetly stunning park. It has a very easy trail. A little scary to visit with younger children as some of the drops are steep. The only "safety feature" between you and a fall into the water below is a rope fence. Bring your camera, a jacket and beanie as it can get a bit cold. We visited at the end of March in the afternoon right before the marine layer kicked in. These photos are from that day. Parking can be reduced. We found paking on the side of the road but that can be bit a dangerous. I would suggest using the state park enterance instead.

Really fun 5 mile hike, not terribly technical however we did have to stop and catch our breath a few times. We loved the top even if the view was somewhat socked in with fog. Once you get past the tiny bit of scramble on the incline it's pretty easy going from there to the top and back down. Would definitely recommend.

What a. Amazing experience. The views are absolutely breathtaking. The hike was beautiful and worth it! We spent 4 hours on the hike and saw beautiful stuff. If you are in the area, Do not hesitate to go there. It is a must. You won’t regret it.

You just have to see this wonderful work by The Man. The vastness is awe-inspiring. Makes you feel small in comparison to this grand work. The mountains and their calm are juxtaposed by a churning sea, roaring, while they stand quietly looking over the ocean.
Patrick Culver — Google review
Good place to take a short hike. On the ocean side, it's a good place to take a picture.
Woonhak Kang — Google review
This place is something out of the book. The scenery is simply breathtaking. Roads are narrow and curvy , so very careful driving is a must. And have your boots ready, prepare to run out of space in your camera or phone. The whole big sur has dozens of points where I wish I can rest-n-peace when time comes.
Shahedul Islam — Google review
Must stop on your way to Big Sur! Beautiful views of the ocean, mountains and a small waterfall. Everything will leave you in awe. During super bloom time of the year the area is filled with a variety of flowers. It's always beautiful, all year round. <3
spandana patnaik — Google review
Extreme beauty with minimal effort! This is how I would describe this location. The hike is mild with slight inclines and steps. Once you get to the Vista point, you can have a more aggressive incline if you go left and back up the hill but we just came back the way we started. The views or breathtaking, the rocks are beautiful, and the water is so blue!
Kevin Sewell — Google review
Beautiful place to hike, one of my favorites around Monterey. If you want a smaller hike/walk you can go just into the forest and have lunch by the river, but if you choose to go all the way up the view is really amazing. It's a pretty challenging hike once you get through the forest though!

Carmel Mission Basilica Museum

Mentioned on
Basilica
Museums
The Carmel Mission Basilica Museum is a historic church established in 1771 by Father Junipero Serra, who also founded numerous other missions along California's coastline. Located at 3080 Rio Road, Carmel, Monterey County, California CA, USA, the mission features an on-site museum and a peaceful courtyard. It has undergone extensive restoration to preserve its original grandeur after falling into disrepair during the 19th century.
We visited the Mission Basilica to remember the passing of our father one year ago, and the opportunity to learn more in the museum was a welcome addition to the trip. Plus his name was on a coin in the gift shop and the text has served to lift my spirits since Saturday: " O St. Michael, give us your strength to defeat our fears and to rise up to any challenge". It's comforting to think of him in this continued role as protector even after his passing. The Mission Gardens are quiet and encourage contemplation as well.
Gus Leonard — Google review
It was beautiful! So much beauty & history. The grounds are kept very clean and it's so peaceful. The gift shop is small but has some nice things. The older woman and man who worked there, could be a little more friendlier though. It would be nice since they are working at a church 😒

We are doing a tour of all of the CA missions, and this one, so far, is the most beautiful and interesting of them all. Most of the buildings are in tact and so amazing to see, as are all of the bells everywhere, and they rang while we were there, so lovely. The church itself is worth the visit. Just gorgeous with little chapels attached to it, not to mention some museums and quite a large shop to purchase things in. Father Junipero Serra is buried in the church and that was something I did not expect. Amazing.

Interesting to see and learn about. This mission was probably my favorite out of all the ones I have visited; it is incredibly beautiful with so much rich history. Definitely recommend checking it out

Such a beautiful place with rich history! The grounds and church are gorgeous and the museum shows a lot of history about the California missions. Go there early and beat the crowd. Don’t miss it!
Stephanie DeCavit — Google review
A calming place, so peaceful. The grounds are impeccably maintained - this place is beautiful. The history and restorations are something to see. To think how far these missionaries traveled, and the conditions they lived in & with is amazing. The mission is a functioning church/parish - so there are times to avoid (or plan for) if you want to attend services. Admission for adults - $10; youth - $5.

Beautiful mission! My daughter studied this mission in particular for her 4th grade project. Amazing that it was built 260 years ago! There were a number of helpful individuals that have us facts and insights to the mission and the history of it. We really enjoyed the visit even though they charged us $40 to just walk around.

Mission Carmel is beautiful. You do have to pay to enter , tickets can be bought there. Spent a rainy afternoon here, but loved it. There is so much history inside these walls from relics to the final resting place of Father Junipero Sera. The first library in California is here. There is so much to see and there was so much to choose from the gift shop. The ladies inside the gift shop were so nice. This Mission was also visited my Pope John Paul ll in 1987. Highly recommended.

The basilica was really amazing, unfortunately we were not there in time for holy mass. We did the (self guided) tour, started out in the beautiful courtyard and just absorbing the atmosphere. Nice place with a small courtyard to walk around! Even if you are not a very religious person or maybe a different tradition like me, I am from Hare Krishna, I still recommend stopping by here and taking a walk if you are nearby. It's a very nice and peaceful atmosphere, you can sit, think and pray.

The Basilica stands as a testament to meticulous preservation, inviting visitors to immerse themselves in its rich history. Each corner echoes tales of the magnificent past, meticulously safeguarding the captivating stories of families intertwined with its walls. From its intricate architecture to the preserved artifacts, every detail tells a compelling narrative that captivates the imagination and transports one to a different time.

We enjoyed our visit to this well-maintained and beautiful historic site. My first visit was 41 years ago (the paint was still wet) and I am happy to say that the beauty of this place remains. The basilica is very beautiful and I enjoyed a discussion with the docent present who shared her knowledge of this mission and the establishment of many of the missions in California. The altar back is magnificent. The grounds are so beautiful you shouldn’t miss this.

We came here for a homeschool field trip. The grounds are beautiful and very informative. The courtyard is enormous. The gardens were full of flowers, hummingbirds and butterflies. The short video about the history was very helpful. There were several weddings the day we went but we were able to peek in the Basilica between ceremonies. Our family felt truly blessed to be in the presence of Saint Junipero Serra's final resting place. The experience was better for our older children because they understand more but we will come back again.

Hula's Island Grill is a seafood restaurant in Monterey, CA with an island-inspired menu. The restaurant has burgers, tacos, fish and chicken platters on the menu.
Definitely coming back after the quick and excellent service and meal. I highly recommend their happy hour and Godzilla tots. Definitely fully of flavor. One thing I greatly appreciate is that when they say spicy they mean it! It was just right not overwhelmingly spicy . 🌶 the ambience is super friendly and laid back. Definitely a place to kick back and enjoy a family meal or chill with a large group of friends.

A hidden gem just off the main beaten path of Cannery Row. Friendly, helpful staff that provided just the perfect amount of attention. They went the extra mile to double check on our menu questions. This place caters to vegans and gluten-free, with separate menus for each. Good variety of beers, ciders, wines (including pineapple wine!) and cocktails. For cocktails, you can order a single or double serving. Good was delicious and came out relatively quickly. I’d recommend sitting in the back patio. Chill, fun, almost island-like vibes. Both shaded and unshaded tables available.

This place is soooo fun!!! Just the perfect island vibes...and a definite locals delight. Great food, great drinks, great atmosphere. The wings are amazing, so unique! They also have a good happy hour... $7 appetizers, and the Tiki drinks are $10 for a single and $14 for a double.

Hula never let me down. Being a common in their Santa Cruise location I decided to check out this one in Monterrey when we were visiting this cute city last time. Waiting time was only 20 minutes which is pretty short for a Sunday night. Food same good as in Santa Cruise and portions are generous. We got Hawaiian jerk plates (one chicken and one vegan), if you decide to try the same be careful with adding a sauce it’s really hot. Better add a little to some bites not all at once to not be burnt (I was first time I tried it haha) Overall recommend Hula to anyone who comes to Monterrey. It’s one of the most atmospheric places with good quality/price ratio here.

So my wife and I also came here off the back of reviews read, and read about people being glad they trusted the reviews. Well so are we! We went on a Thursday evening in January, and unlike anywhere else that evening, Hula's was buzzing. Loved the different areas of the place. We first sat at the bar enjoying a couple of drinks. The bar tender behind the "Tiki Tiki" bar was very welcoming and friendly and she looked after us well. We then sat in a nearby booth where we had great food. Enjoyed the shrimp spring rolls, then for mains, jerk chicken and also sweet potato fries. This place is great!

One of my favorite restaurants! Love the drinks and the Dukes Luau Pork Plate and the french fries! This time my favorite drink was the Hurricane. We sat inside, next time we'll wait for outside seating. It was very crowded and VERY hot. Still my favorite! Ate outside this time and it was much better! Pele's punch was the winning drink this time!

Great Hawaiian Island style restaurant with Tiki Bar to go with it. Great way to remind yourself that you're on vacation. Even if you're not. The fresh cut fries are utterly and completely perfect. Pork was great. Slaw had an interesting spice which was different but good. Plantains could have been a titch softer. Mix drinks were well made Boat Drinks. Live life friends!

Second time I have been here. The food is always fresh, delicious and served with a smile. The last time I came here I discovered a new favorite beer...this time was no different. Another amazing Hazy IPA! Check out my pics for the details. If you are in Monterey, don't go to the tourist trap places that will mostly disappoint...go to Hula where everything is always on point!! I should coin that phrase!! Cheers!!

They serve and refill water on request only. That's what the menu said. I like that, it builds character. If you really want it, you got to put in the work. How bad do you want it? You can't just assume that water is going to be a given. This place reminded me of the feeling I get on airplanes when they're offering drinks. The old me would ask for one drink, either a water or ginger ale. If I asked for water, they'd only give me a small cup's worth. If I asked for ginger ale, I had the opportunity to get the full can, depending on what airlines I was flying. I just assumed that I couldn't ask for both at the same time. It wasn't until recently that I built up the courage to ask for both and guess what...I got. My confidence is growing now and I might even ask for three drinks the next time I'm at flight. All I'm trying to say is don't expect the waiters at Hula's Island Grill to read your mind. If you want more water, just ask for it. I think they can't refill your water without request because it's a California law to help conserve water. So they could actually be breaking the law if they refilled your cup without request. You could be considered an accomplice if you don't stop them. Anyway, the food and water I requested was amazing.

We went to the aquarium and stopped here for dinner. We were looking for something less touristy and off Cannery Row and found this nice local restaurant. Fresh food, nice cocktails, friendly service and reasonable prices. They have outdoor seating.

We came for lunch, was busy which is a good sign. Got seated quickly and they were very accommodating with helping us fold/place our stroller out of the way. Server was great, attentive, recommended one meal over another and she nailed the recommendation. Had the pork plate and the lunch special, everything was delicious. We were very happy with our meals, cleaned both plates. Super cute place with a great vibe. We will be back.

Only one star lost here but its for the French Fries. We have ordered the burger and fries many many times. Each time we ask for crispy crispy fires and made a point when placing our order. 90% of the time the fries a limp and soggy. I really wish Hulas would train their frier how to make fries.

The food was good, but the bartender with the beard with unfriendly enough that it was awkward for our family. He was rude and short with us while we waited for a table. The host was amazing, figuring out how to get us into a table with only a 10min wait instead of a 45min wait, and our server (Carrie) was awesome, friendly, and attentive. The spicy edamame was an awesome appetizer and I’d recommend anyone get it. It was so unique. Very spicy. Very flavorful. Carrie said it is marinated for 24 hours and then (I think) fire roasted. The arugula salad with blackened tofu and mango chicken Cesar salads were great too. Lots of vegan, vegetarian, and gluten-free options!

Service was excellent, and outdoor seating is made comfortable with the heat numerous lamps. The food wasn’t great. Calamari needed extra flavor, so did the shrimp eggrolls, it relied heavily on the sauce. The fish came too dry and it relied on the sauce again. The curry had good flavor, a bit spicy, there’s a piece of fish on the bottom, wish it was just more crab.

On the rainy day of 02.03.24 at 5:22pm, I reserved a table via walk in for a party of 6. Total of 5 immediately was seated and the remaining guest arrived late due to being unfamiliar with the area and lack of parking due to the nearby tourist attractions. The tardiness of the remaining guest clearly bothered staff via passive aggressive attitude. Also, the waitress threatened to relocate the party to a different location of the restaurant with the reasoning that the back patio was closed due to the rain. Once the final guest arrived, the passive aggressive attitude from the waitress started to simmer but the attitude was still present. Upon the issuance, of the final tab (pictured in this review) a total of $14 gratuities was signed for the waitress. Several days after the transaction has fully processed, an additional $25.90 was charged without my consent and without explanation. Myself and Jr (who accompanied myself on 02.03.24 & left a brief review on 2.6.24 regarding this visit) are regular customers that visit at least monthly to enjoy the food and the atmosphere. While the poor weather on that day has limited the occupancy of the business, this does not justify the poor attitude of staff whatsoever. This unfortunate situation has left us feeling unwelcomed and taken advantaged of. Do better.

My husband and I love this place! We came twice while he was in town visiting me on my travel contract, and I’ve been once alone and plan to go again! The ceviche is soooo gooood. We’ve got it every time. He got the calamari both times. I liked it the first time, but the second it wasn’t crispy enough for me, but it’s also not my favorite dish so keep that in mind. He still loved it! He got the Kingston Crab Currie both times and we both thought it was amazing. I got the teriyaki ribs and they were really good! I got the Ahi Tuna Caesar the second time which was great, and the third time I got the colossal crab cake. It wasn’t the best I’ve ever had but it was still good enough for me to order again. I loved the sauces it came with! What I love the most about this place is the Blood Orange Martini! 😍 I never truly enjoy the taste of alcohol very much, but this drink is delicious! Going during happy hour is definitely worth it. I’ll probably go back tonight 😁

Bistro Moulin is a charming European-style bistro in the heart of Monterey that specializes in hearty French cuisine and casual wines. Owner Didier Dutertre takes great pride in using locally sourced ingredients where possible, making this an intimate and highly rated spot for excellent fare.
Always enjoy coming here. Their Spinach Gnocchi is among the best I've ever had. Same with their white wine mussels. Very fragrant. Service has never been bad in the past 3 times I've been there. They are very attentive. We always recommend our out of town guests to go here. One of the few restaurants I would give very high praise to locally.

All of the food was amazing. I highly recommend the pork cheek. It’s more tender than regular pork. I would go early, or make reservations long because they are often fully booked up around dinner time. The one time I successfully walked in, it was at 4 pm.

Went to have our 10th year wedding anniversary dinner. Our waiter was super nice and knowledgeable. She suggested us a very good wine (probably one of the best wines we've had) to go with our dishes. We were seated right away when we got there, it was around 5:30pm. We were asked if we wanted still or frizz, we chose frizz (san pellegrino) -- NOT FREE! We then ordered our delicious appetizer (smoke salmon carpaccio with capers). Make sure you use the lemon zest it was bomb! The bread they served was fresh and delicious! I got pasta with truffles, and my husband ordered the cannelloni tartufi (it's a filled pasta with beef tenderloin, ricotta, truffle, and pink vodka sauce) so.good. ! We finished it up with a delicious chocolate sorbet dessert. French food never disappoints. The ambiance is great! We never ran out of wine in our glass. Our waitress was very attentive, i wish i got her name. She deserves a raise! Overall, we had a great time. A must try! P.S. i had a great time doing my own fancy food plate art. 😉 the last 4 photos are the real plate. 🙂🙃

We loved it when it was the old owner and now also the new owner from Capri. On a Friday night we arrived to a bit of a noisy upbeat full restaurant we had reservations and were seated at a window. We ordered a salad to shares, gnocchi appetizer with delicious cream sauce that you’ll want to save to dip your bread and French fries in. My main corse was moules and Frits. Partner had the stuffed pasta shells with sirloin etc. shared a desert pistachio cake on the lighter side. We were stuffed and everything was delicious. The server had suggested a great French Chablis. It quieted down towards the end of our meal. Yum we’ll go again

I have fond memories of this restaurant (and the sushi place that was here before, that I used to go to I was a child) and I went back to Bistro Moulin for the first in 10 years recently. Unfortunately, our service was sub par. We didn’t get served bread or the special complimentary appetizer from the chef that the other tables received. Also, when we asked for bread shortly before the food arrived the waitress seemed to be aware we didn’t get bread and begrudgingly brought some as the entrees were arriving. The canelones were good, the appetizers good. The steelhead trout was unimaginative and not what I expected and tasted like the typical salmon i make once a week at home - I would not recommend as it costs $50. Would recommend Gusto, Café Rústica or Patria, in Salinas as they have the same quality of food and are a lot cheaper and don’t have waiters that serve some tables bread and complimentary appetizers and do not do so to other tables.

A wonderful little French restaurant! Cute atmosphere and an intimate feel for dinner. Everything from the complimentary crostini with the carrot tapenade to the berries and profiteroles we all so good. Their cheese charcuterie board was wonderful with the best brie and Roquefort cheese! My husband enjoyed the baked beef tenderloin cannelloni. We would definitely come back and enjoy another meal!

Had a great experience here. The food is fantastic, I had the scallops and we also got the spinach gnocchi as an appetizer and it was phenomenal! Blew us out of the water. Only thing I would say is it’s not good for a big group, pretty tiny space, limit your party to 4.

The C restaurant + bar is a seafood-driven eatery in Monterey with stunning views of the coast. The cuisine is endorsed by the Monterey Bay Aquarium, and features dishes such as Arctic Char, which is similar to salmon in taste, texture and color but can be enjoyed year-round. There is also table service available, as well as a full bar. Live music can be enjoyed at the restaurant on select nights.

Everything about the C restaurant was amazing for both breakfast & Dinner. Whenever we are in Monterey we love staying at the Intercontinental. The ease, the excellence in service, and the abundance of amazing dishes make the C a A+. If you want to escape the craziness of the aquarium for lunch the C is the place to be. The cost is nearly the same but you can easily be seated. Where as lunch at the aquarium you are circling like buzzards to nab a table.

Good food with high quality ingredients but small portions. When we sat down, we were asked if we wanted still or sparkling water. Forgot that tap is probably an option so we had the opportunity to accidentally enjoy a single bottle of $14 still water. 🫠 The wait staff were very efficient and our food arrived quickly. Clam chowder is pretty good taste and portion wise but the wedge salad is very small and we did not think worth the price.

We had ann amazing dinner for our anniversary and then two wonderful visits to the bar! Luis was so professional and definitely had great drink knowledge! One night we came in a few minutes before closing and a server said he was sorry he just clocked out but Luis took out to go desert order and was so patient and kind! This restaurant really makes the hotel. Amazing and Luis is such a great front man at the bar!

I recently stayed at this hotel and visited the C restaurant + bar. Unfortunately, my experience with the customer service was extremely disappointing. Despite discrimination supposedly being a thing of the past, I encountered it firsthand. Upon attempting to sit at the bar among other patrons, I was rudely told that it wasn't 'my place' and encouraged to sit outside or in a distant area of the restaurant. When I questioned this treatment, I was met with hostility. Even my simple order for a drink was met with disdain. It's disheartening to experience such blatant discrimination in this day and age.

This restaurant is such a gem! Every single surface was spotless and every single staff member was so attentive and professional while maintaining friendliness and warmth. The view is beyond compare, so be sure to make reservations noting a window table (though every seat has a pretty great view). The warm rosemary bread with goat cheese butter topped with lemon olive oil is stellar! I'd be remiss if I skipped the dessert; the Baked California is outstanding!!! The acoustic music Thursday through Sunday evenings provides the best relaxing environment.

Had breakfast at the restaurant. Live music and great view of Monterey Bay. Wait staff was attentive and food was good. Originally I was a little hesitant about the place being too foo-foo, glad to see my fears were not justified. I ordered Ham and Eggs, what I got was what I was expecting...a hearty breakfast. (I was worried about getting dollops of egg foam, resting on a slice of potato and surrounded by ham puree.) 😆 Later that evening I was desperate for a cup of regular coffee. Not expresso or latte, just a regular cup of hot black coffee. The bar was able to come to my rescue with a cup of coffee I could take back upstairs. Really appreciated not having to run out to get a coffee.

I love this hotel and the restaurant but haven’t been back for quite awhile. The services, decor, food and drinks are still very good but it’s a bit pricey (we are on our 3rd year of COVID, everything is getting expensive, gas is $6 per gallon). Old Fishermen's Grotto is a seafood restaurant located in Monterey, CA that serves Hawaiian swordfish and clam chowder. The atmosphere is family-friendly and the food is always delicious. It has been awarded several awards for its cuisine.
My husband and I walked in on a Sunday evening and were seated right away! Miguel was a great server. We ordered the clam chowder bread bowl with garlic butter, which never disappoints, along with the avocado crab seafood tower. This is definitely the best spot for clam chowder and we will continue to return! Additionally, we loved the atmosphere, interior and the rose at the end of the meal.

The best seafood I have ever had! The ultimate pasta has a large amount of seafood, and 3 colors of pasta. The service is great! I feel very respected. And the server gave me a rose which made my day. I had a really bad week this week, and this helps me feel much better.

I had a wonderful dining experience at this restaurant, thoroughly enjoying the delectable food they served. Luckily, we were seated next to a window, allowing me to relish the breathtaking ocean view accompanied by a stunning sunset. The service provided throughout our meal was truly exceptional, with the staff attending to our needs from the moment we arrived until the end. Personally, I savored the sea bass dish, while my sister delighted in her Halibut selection. Additionally, their clam chowder was a standout item that should not be missed. Overall, it was a memorable dining experience that combined delicious cuisine, scenic views, and impeccable service.

Beautiful restaurant, wonderful views. It was a little more upscale than we were expecting. We brought our baby and her stroller, but had to take the stroller back to the car because they don't allow them. They are okay with you bringing children in, but again, it did feel a little upscale for that, and there was no changing table or anything in the restroom. Very cozy place, loved the atmosphere. We shared a garlic clam chowder bowl, and that was delicious! The other dishes were good, but we expected a little better for the price. Other than that, great place!

One of the more popular restaurants along the wharf. Oysters were very fresh and clam chowder was good too. Paella portion was huge but taste of the rice was average. We were quite impressed with the value that we came back the second night. Ordered halibut the next night which turned out average. All in all a great restaurant that serves extremely fresh seafood.. focus on the seafood and you will not be left disappointed. Plus they also gave a rose to every lady!

Get the garlic bread bowl!!! They add extra crab meat to the chowder and bake the bread bowl with garlic butter!! The pasta dishes are usually great. The calamari batter is light and crisp comes w horseradish and cocktail sauce. The oysters are always fresh. The service is always great here, they are professional and show some love during dinner service with a nice rose.

The gentleman host I think was named Shake? Was a very nice gentleman and got us a table in quick order, the server I think was named Gustavo was a very informative and attentive server who gave us the run down of everything they serve and what is popular and his personal favorites and he did not disappoint. The food was so delicious and well prepared, definitely coming back again. I like the atmosphere and classic 50s music kind of a romantic atmosphere with candlelight and at the end of the dining they give you a rose, how thoughtful, this is a perfect spot for a date with your significant other. To the people who have children this place does not allow children or strollers so just be forewarned this is just for adults. If you have children I would like to eat something similar you can probably go to The fish Hopper down the way they are owned by the same people and the food is fantastic there as well.

Great seafood! Expect to spend at least $50 per person. The view was great and service was good. I would not recommend coming here if you have small children as there is a sign in the front stating that loud or crying children are not allowed. They also don’t accommodate for them either (High chair and etc) I found that to be odd. Great for a nice date night.
Scottie Ohmer — Google review
The food was better than I expected. The Chilean sea bass was cooked to perfection, clam chowder was excellent (on the thicker side) and the pear and Gorgonzola salad was very fresh and used local produce. We could tell ingredients were best of the best. I took a star off for the dated atmosphere - it’s very dark and furniture and carpet feel old. Our server was friendly and attentive, and the food was timely. Try to get a table on the second floor by the window to have a view of the sea lions playing in the water!

Revised: Went back before we left town and somehow they exceeded our last visit! Got the calamari this time when was perfectly done and generous. This is THE best restaurant in Fisherman’s Wharf! Service is top notch. Dropped in because they were voted best clam chowder in the area for the last several years, and we wanted to see for ourselves. They didn’t disappoint! They were generous and friendly and you cannot beat the intimate ambience. We didn’t know that they were a sister restaurant to Fish Hopper down on Cannery Row. I recommend Old Fisherman’s Grotto over Fish Hoppers.

The restaurant is on the pier and so you have a good view from almost anywhere in the restaurant. See photos. The service was excellent, Jose being friendly and attentive, even though busy, with a nice warm smile. The food was delicious. The clam chowder was just the way we like it on the thicker side, nicely seasoned, full of clams and not too many potato bits. See photo. The Seafood Linguine Isabella was more food than I expected and not skimpy on the seafood part. See photo.

Food was great. Best clam chowder I've ever had. Calamari was cooked perfectly and the garlic bread is phenomenal. The service was on point. I was a bit worried about the sign out front that put a lot of limitations around kids dining at the restaurant but we had no problem with five kids in our party.

Came in for dinner with my husband. Loved the atmosphere, it felt like we were in a boat. We tasted different kinds of clam chowder from Boston, Seattle, and this one was outstanding! The service was good and the food was great, you can tell the owners take a good care of the place and their customers. Don’t see this kind of places often!

Came to dine solo at Old Fisherman’s Grotto on the recommendation of a local. I ordered the Mexican style shrimp cocktail, a Long Island ice tea, & the clam bake. The shrimp cocktail was fresh & delicious. For the cocktail, they do NOT skimp on the alcohol so drink wisely lol. And the clam bake was specifically recommended to me & I'm so glad it was! It was the best chowder I’ve ever had & I’ve had chowder in both Maine & Massachusetts- north east has nothing on this one. The service was also impeccable. Wait staff were kind & attentive from the moment I stepped up to the door.

Surprisingly delicious food despite being in a touristy area. The wait staff was very accommodating and professional. Has such an old school vibe and classy feel to the two story restaurant. The crab cakes were amazing and the mango was a nice contrast to the crab. Calamari was tender. I had the risotto with my meal and it had such a cheesy flavor. Overall both meals were delicious. They bring a dessert tray displaying your options after the entrees. Waitress even gave me a rose at the end of our meal.

We returned after over 20 years to Monterey and the first thing I told my wife was we have to go to this restaurant. I told the owner about my memories of my last visit and I hope it would be as good. He told me, "it will be better" !!!! He was definately right. The did was excellent and our server Giavanny did a fabulous job. The only thing I missed were the baby artichoke hearts we had years ago were no longer on the menu. The calamari, the calamari chowder and the shrimp were all fabulous and the desserts too were amazing !!! I can't recommend this restaurant enough... it's a 10+ !!!! I do wish they still shipped their clam chowder. It was great even canned !!! Thanks Chris !!! Congrats !!!

We were glad we came down here for lunch. The clam chowder was excellent - so was the crab Mac and cheese - not fishy. We probably should have gotten a salad to go with those two things - because all our food was so rich. But the wharf was so fun. We saw sea lions and otters before we left.

Very comfortable Italian seafood place in Monterey. Be warned this place is in huge demand and the waits without a reservation are long. The atmosphere is very cozy and warm, and the service is fast and friendly. We had a window seat and it was a beautiful view of the water. We enjoyed the food! We each had a Cesare's Salad, and they were very tasty, if not completely traditional (no anchovies!), but I assume they need to cater to their clientele—which tends to be touristy. Salads came with toasted garlic sourdough which was perfect. I had Calamari Eggplant Parmesan, and it was delicious; calamari was tender and the combination really worked! My guest had Fried Calamari, and they too were very good; nice dipping sauces. The only thing that I would like to see done a bit differently is the portions, which are HUGE. But once again, this may be a big draw for the normal crowd, but we left about half our food (we were staying in a hotel and couldn’t take doggie bags), which for us approaches a sin. I’d definitely recommend.

I am from out of town - visiting from AZ. Had an absolutely amazing experience here. We were only intending on grabbing a pier side bread bowl but decided to head on inside and check out the full menu. SO GLAD WE DID. The bread bowl was as fantastic as ever but what blew us away was the seafood risotto & our amazing tuxedo cake slice. The photos do not lie. Everything tasted as amazing as it looks. Absolutely 10/10 would dine in again. Christian was an attentive and courteous waiter and we were glad that he was taking good care of us. Cannot wait to visit again.

My wife and I had a fantastic time at Old Fishermen's Grotto for lunch. We noticed the menu is a bit pricier for dinner, but our lunch experience was totally worth it. My wife loved her Seafood Linguini Isabella, and my Seafood Paella with Chorizo was not only big but could easily feed 2-3 people—huge portions! The Clam Chowder was a game-changer. Seriously, the best we've ever tasted. No idea what they put in it, but it's magic. We started with the Grotto Seafood Sampler—grilled shrimp, fried calamari, and a standout crab cake. The crab cake was a winner. Dessert was the raspberry cheesecake, beautifully presented and not too sweet—just perfect. Old Fishermen's Grotto is a must-try for seafood lovers. The service was great, portions were big and the flavors are phenomenal. R

Alvarado Street Brewery is a popular craft brewery in Monterey and Salinas, CA with a wide variety of beers on tap. The restaurant in the Monterey location offers outdoor seating and the brewery has an outdoor beer garden in Salinas.
Definitely the best place in town for extra tasty food and local drinks. They have a comfortable environment for both beer garden drinking and indoor dining. There is also a regular bar seating area, and you can get food at any of them. The back porch is pet friendly so come see the dogs and watch the game on TV or just have a drink and some great food. Bring friends, or make new ones!

After grabbing some fruit from the farmers market right in front, we saw the high reviews for this place and gave it a try. The beer was good but we heartily regretted the food. If you love drowning food in sauce, you may like it. We ordered their most popular items, thinking the turnover would be good. Overall the food was too heavy, dripping with sugary, oily sauces so you couldn't really see or taste the meat. The fried food was so oily and greasy, coating slid right off. We had to double check there wasn't a mistake made with the everything seasoning pretzel bc they looked like plain mini baguettes, kind of like the complimentary Olive Garden rolls (haven't been to one in 20 years so not sure if they r still) but with a baking soda wash. Service was also nonexistent. Given it was empty except for one other table in the front, and we also had several bags of peaches and apricots (which we let them know), we wondered why we were given a tiny table for two all the way in the back where servers were chatting and folding napkins. The size of the table was big enough if you were only going to have beer and a small starter. Right next to us were several large four person tables and booths, any of which would have been comfortable given we were ordering late lunch/early dinner. As we were almost done, we realized they allow non-service dogs inside indoor dining area, (as someone who loves animals and has taken care of several different pets throughout my life) which we think is unsanitary.

We sat out on the back patio, and it was a beautiful experience from start to finish. Amongst the other bartenders out there, Rachel took incredible care of us. She was so personable, making suggestions of items on the menu we might enjoy and she was right about everything. Top tier hospitality! I can’t recommend this place enough. Incredible food, excellent beer, and a warm and inviting atmosphere create the perfect night out. We came in from out of town and it was just what we needed. Thank you! We will be back!

Great spot. Very nice high end restaurant and it’s a brewery with great beer! It’s worth checking out if you like good food and tasty beer. I had the Mai Tai IPA with some really good Mac and cheese, I’ll stop here again next time I’m in town.

It's called a brewery so we expected a good selection of beer and my husband was happy with the amount offered. We sat out front as we had our dog with us and it was super busy on the street/sidewalk, but I'm glad we sat on the patio as the inside is LOUD. We had crab Mac and cheese (would not recommend), California burger (similar to double double), and crab cake BLT (whole family agreed this was the best thing we ordered). Place was very busy and we had to wait 30 minutes even though we arrived at 5:30. Service was nice considering how busy they were.

FOOD: Hamburger... patty is 4oz before cooking, which is why they offer a double patty for extra $$. Burgers come with "vege fixins'" and fries add $ for garlic fries that really have little to no garlic. The cost was $22 with 2 patties which were probably 1/3 patty once cooked. I had no sauce on the burger. Burger was good with a great, soft, airy bun. PIZZA: Kid pizza is the same size as regular. Borrow someone's kid while ordering and save $$$:)) Just joking... Pizza crust is thin and made, I believe, with Parmesain cheese. We had the pepperoni for $16. Pizza is the size of a small 10" dinner plate. Had good flavor, loaded with cheese & pepperoni. Not the meal if you want low calorie or low saturated fat. "RAINBOW BOWL": $22 to include an ample size chicken breast. This dish was flavor-filled and textured; not mushy. Always good, friendly service from Britrany and a festive atmosphere. I added a tasting flight of 4 different IPA beer(s) @ $3.75 each. I really could not tell much difference between them.

We had a lamb burger and a sea bass. Wish had little more fries. The sea bass was exceptional 😍 Beer was great as well. Our server was amazing! We had a great time in this restaurant. Even the restaurant was very busy the drinks and food were served promptly. Highly recommend!!

This place is super popular that I almost have to shout when chatting with my friend. The waiters are all attentive and friendly. Their poutine is really delicious, and the salmon is also cooked to perfection- crispy skin and tender meat. The crab Mac and cheese is a bit too salty for me because there are also bacon pieces inside. Also, I was expecting a more stretched-cheese style, but their style is more of a creamy flavor. Beet salad tastes good and fresh, but I personally would prefer a more sour flavor.

Alvarado Street brewery is more than just a brewery. It's a modern and inviting gastropub, specializing in matching the flavors and aromas of beer to compliment each other. All ingredients used in the brewery are locally sourced. I only enjoyed the beer, but the food smelled amazing. In the back there's a Chic outdoor beer garden, shaded by lattice work and greenery. It feels cozy and secluded from the noise on the street. There are communal picnic tables to make the beer garden a social space. The craft beers were on point, very refreshing after spending a day on the coast. There is also seating on the main Alvarado Street, if you'd like to people watch. This would be a great date spot to grab a beer in the beer garden. Then enjoy a walk through historic downtown Monterey. IG: SACRAMENTOHONEY

Fantastic beer, great atmosphere, delicious food. Everything you could want from a local brewpub. Our group ordered the dry-rubbed wings, Old Town pizza, a burger, fish & chips, and mussels. Every dish was fantastic — way better than your average pub food. Creative menu items, all cooked very well. The wings were legit some of the best I’ve ever had. The beers were also excellent. I had a fruited sour that was fantastic — so bright and fresh. The space is nice, with regular seating, bar seating, community tables, and a really cute dog-friendly beer garden in the back.

We enjoyed our visit to ASB, which always seems to be a happening place. They have a huge array of craft brews. I only tried the hazy ipa but thought it was excellent. The food was very good too. It’s noisy because of the crowds but still highly recommended.

Nice place to hang out, eat great food and have drinks. Came here with the Mrs for our day date. Had a chicken sandwich with garlic fries, and my wife had pork belly pizza and we both had two beers. Really good food and beer was excellent. The service was amazing, our server was very friendly and attentive, will definitely come back again

Great brewery in Monterrey. Great location with a 5 min walk to fisherman’s wharf. Excellent beer options, Hazy and IPA choice’s were great. Had the Jamaican jerk chicken sandwich, well cooked but did lack a level of spice I would expect. Fish and chips that our guests had were excellent. Place was busy but service was quick. Highly recommend.

I came here with my family this last weekend and wanted to make sure I completed this review based off the fantastic experience I had at this location. Desiree was extremely nice and helpful. Desiree even accommodated us by taking me to look at the table that was available to ensure that worked for my family and let me know there was another option if it did not work for us. I have to say I have never had a restaurant employee treat me that good. I really felt welcomed and taken care of. When we sat down we were assisted by waitress Autumn who was wonderful herself. Autumn was very friendly, attentive and had good knowledge of the menu. Exactly how you would like your server to be. She took very good care of us our whole visit. Overall the food, service and atmosphere were awesome. I would definitely recommend coming here when you're in Monterey. I for sure will be coming back very soon.

Great stop on my beer bucket list but $26USD for a flight of six sample beers was ridiculous. I’ve checked in 12,000 beers on Untapped and have traveled from Copenhagen to Vancouver chasing great beers. This place has the beers but I could have had three pints for the cost of this flight. Staff were great, but I think this was by far the most expensive flight I’ve ever had.

Best chicken sandwich we all have ever had. Shoutout to our waitress, Jessica, for recommending the jerk chicken sandwich to someone in your group because it was literally the best chicken sandwich any of us have ever had and that’s with us knowing chick fil a exists. Everything we had tonight was incredible. The guacamole had the perfect amount of heat. The quesabirria tacos were melt in your mouth tender. The calamari was good. The loco moco was an amazing treat to find on a menu and three of us ordered it. The staff were really friendly, the vibes were great, and the food was outstanding. We will be back.
