The Archaeological Museum of Heraklion is a museum in Heraklion, Crete, which houses artefacts from the Neolithic to the Roman periods. The building was designed by renowned Greek architect Panagiotis Kalkos and is considered one of the best ancient art museums in Europe.
Very well set up, all the information available in English. It has a good organization through the time. They included quite interesting details, the ligth is well set up so most of the time you could take nice pictures. The rooms are plenty of space, so you can enjoy the visit even in crowded moments.

Great museum and very beautiful items and displays. The only part I didn't like was that I paid full price for a ticket and the Greek/roman statue section was closed and I wasn't told when purchasing which I feel warrants a cheaper price. Takes a while to get around also and if you want to visit the place the artifacts are from (mostly Knossos palace) you can buy the dual ticket and get the number 2 bus. Well worth a trip to both.
Paul King — Google review
This is a must visit museum! It is one of the best museums I’ve ever visited and it is the most important museum to learn about the ancient Minoan culture, history, artwork and artifacts. The selection of items were very extensive, and they were carefully curated both in Greek and English. It is also unique because these are not items you can find in other museums in the world. What’s so impressive to me was how carefully preserved these items were. Or perhaps some of these were carefully restored but one would never think that some were from 4-5000 years ago. I do notice that some people touch some of the artifacts which frustrated me. Perhaps it would be wise to section off some of those items so that they cannot be damaged. There is an app that goes with tours for the museum. However, I find the app a little bit confusing, but nonetheless, you can read up more on certain items carefully after your visit. This museum requires 3 to 4 hours at least to carefully see, and absorb all the information. I highly recommend visiting this museum.

The place is quite big. There are 2 floors. Plenty of exhibits. The customer service is excellent. The museum is in the heart of the city, so parking is somewhat difficult to find. In short, the place is good, but I have seen some better museums in my life.

An interesting, affordable (6 euros)museum that we completed in less than an hour. Watch for Ginger the resident cat who lures you in with her meowing affections and nips you when you fall for her wiles lol. It was nice respite from the pouring march rains. Staff were friendly and offered to store our bags of purchases. A no frills indoor cafeteria Should you need a drink or snack. They allow you to bring bottled water as you walk in the museum

A must have for your visit at Héraklion. Recommended to visit it before going to Kronoss. If you want to see everything clearly, prepare a bottle of water in the bag and the whole afternoon.

Absolutely loved going here ❤️. Why I haven't been here all these years, I'll never know (oh yes, covid came and we had lock downs). On a happier note, I took loads of pictures, it was all so fascinating. I think if anyone plans to go to Knossos Palace, it is a good idea to come here first. I wish I had, as my visit to Knossos Palace would have made way more sense, and I could have placed the objects I saw at the museum, that Knossos.
Paula O'Neill — Google review
If you've been to the palace first, then it makes sense to see the museum. But otherwise it's just full of hundreds of clay bulls! But if you know the background then it adds the context as to why they're important. The staff are like boring lifeguards, we got told off so many times for pointing, getting to close to items on display, loitering, laughing to loudly & taking photos posing next to statue's where photos are allowed (see pictures attached)! So it took the fun out of being there.
Ginge Haynes — Google review
This new archaeological museum has so much to see it's almost impossible to absorb everything in one visit. It's simply mind-blowing for all you history geeks out there. I don't remember the entrance fee but it wasn't much, less than 10 euros, I think. Go! Immerse yourself into it! Take enough time to really enjoy everything this beautiful museum has to offer.
M M — Google review
Lovely museum with treasures and artifacts from Minoan civilization, from the Palace at Knossos and all over Crete. Well organised with ample air-conditioning. It takes about 2 hours for the whole museum. The statues at the last portion of the museum are stunning.
Ben Kee — Google review
Breathtakingly beautiful exhibition. You'd question what happened to the human race for the past 5000 years, as ancient Greeks arguably make more modern, exquisite and imaginative art works! It's worth highlighting that the official mobile app of the museum is incredibly helpful - out of all the museums I've visited these years, including the British Museum and Athens Archeology Museum, I'd say this museum's app is the most clear, informative and easy to use one. Makes the visit a lot more guided.

(Translated by Google) A good place to see history. You can visit the museum here in a relaxed manner and it is not too cluttered. We booked a tour and that was very helpful. I can only recommend. We spent about 1.5 hours there with a guide.

Amazing collection of VERY ancient pottery, sculpture, metals works, burial items and art. So much of each type and many/most in beautiful condition! The galleries are laid out very well so that it's easy to follow the chronology, with helpful brief info cards for everything. I've been to a few, and this is a great mid-sized local museum. Astounding exhibits!
Steve Ryan — Google review
Great atmosphere, love that you can see how they decorated their Palace.
Ray Leggett — Google review
Absolutely stunning. I spent 3 hours and was amazed by the amount of artful pottery, jewelry and weapons produced by the Minoan. If you really want to understand what live was like 4000 years ago at the time if the Knossos palace you have to come here and dive into the fascinating history.
Christian Lochner — Google review
The Lux Local Organic Museum Do the Palace of Knossos before coming here, if you want to have a greater appreciation for the history and adventure that lead to many of these artifacts being featured in this museum. It is incredible that there is so much in this museum despite being up to 5,000 years old. My mind was blown that the ancient Greeks saw the Minoans as we see the ancient Greeks. This multi tiered layers of history and mythology have shaped the western world from sports to religion. A true local and healthy feast for the eyes, mind and spirit.
Kevin L — Google review
There is a combined ticket for visiting the museum and Knossos. We only found out about it after visiting Knossos. The museum was great! We really enjoyed the exposition and the layout. We felt that this is a must if you really want to get an idea of the artefacts found in Knossos and other archaeological sites. We rushed so we only had an hour, I wish we had at least 2.
Elitsa Levendova — Google review
This was a great place to visit. I bought a combined ticket to here and Knossos. There are so many artifacts here and it really takes you through the history of Crete. There's a lot of great information about the place. I could've spent a lot longer here but I went on my last day in Crete and was pretty tired. Would definitely recommend visiting.
Oliver Paterson — Google review
Excellent museum with clear signs and really great exhibitions. The best thing to do in Heraklion. If you can, combine your ticket with going to Knossos. I’d recommend going there first to have context for your visit.
Jessica Coyle — Google review
Pretty modern, clean and interesting museum. Highly recommend seeing the Knossos ruins beforehand (preferably with a guide) to get a better understanding of a lot of the items on display here and make the most of the experience. WARNING: Although taking pictures inside is allowed, it is not allowed to take them with any gestures, grimaces, etc. (peace signs / thumbs up) They don't seem to tell you this at the entrance, so a few people, including myself, got in trouble for it. (The staff ask you to delete the photos)
Armin Čaušević — Google review
Very old-fashioned museum, 90s style, absolutely not interactive like other modern museums. Museum keepers are very mean to the tourists. They do not allow to pose for the pictures with the exhibits, and if you do, prepare, that the lady approaches you and demands to delete all the pics off your phone. As for the exhibits themselves: too much clay, all put together, no proper chronology. To understand what you see, you have to read the long descriptions in a rather small font. I do not recommend this place. There are better ways to spend 12 €.
Nat Myk — Google review
We stopped in on our last day in Crete and were glad we did. The artifacts are incredible and the way the museum flows is thoughtful and logical. The BIGGEST downside, is that we happened to go the same day as a cruise ship so it was packed. The museum isn't very big so it was loud and at times difficult to get up to see the artifacts. The staff is great! Very friendly and knowledgeable. I would recommend getting a guide that knows where all the good stuff is and has some inside knowledge so you can better understand what you're looking at.
Samantha Turnbull — Google review
We bought our tickets on their website, choosing from 4-5pm. When we went there around 15:30 to be early, they told us it was closed, we showed them our tickets and still refused. The next day we went early in the morning and showed the lady who denied us the entry the day before if we could use the tickets and she said no, but we had the proof that the museum makes you select the time you’d like to visit (as every single museum in the world), she said it was for “statistics”, to this day, I will never find out what that meant. We had to beg security to let us in and we could finally appreciate this place. They urgently need to fix their website, we were not the only ones affected.
Angela Bertrand — Google review
It's a very interesting museum with an overwhelming amount of ceramics, stamps, jewellery, and other treasures from the minoan period and Knossos. This is really what I missed when visiting the site of the Palace. There it could have been a great help to have the model on exposure together with just a few things from the museum, to make that visit more interesting and as a carot to visit the museum in town. I spent three amazing hours and knew a lot more about how skilled people were in those days. The pottery really blew my mind! So many different forms and minute decorations. Not speaking of the head of the bull! I really recommend visiting this museum!
Lya Saaek — Google review
If you like museums this one had a surprising amount of interesting items found in caves and ruins. Amazing to see.
Annette McGuire — Google review
I spent 2 hours walking round in detail the museum is circular so you won't get lost or miss anything with the great culture of Herklion and Crete with disabled access for upstairs. The museum was fantastic and detailed amount of ancient Greece and the hellenistic period that heavily influenced the daily modern day life it is a seek peak Into our past that is a do not miss
Jeanette Williams — Google review
A super complete and instructive museum. The amount of historical items is amazing. Ancient Greek art, jewellery and history mix between the items of the museum.
Luciana Côrtes — Google review
We had prepaid combo tickets which were only €5 more than the price for Knossos with 3 days to use them. So glad we did. Lovely artefacts from Minoan sites giving a real insight into their lives which you don’t get from the site alone. Nice cool galleries with seating. A bit crowded.

Heritage museum
The Lychnostatis Open Air Museum, located on the eastern edge of Hersonissos with a beautiful seaside view, is a family-owned museum that showcases the natural history and culture of Crete. The museum recreates a traditional Cretan village with remarkable authenticity, featuring various buildings such as a windmill and farmers' houses. Visitors can witness weaving workshops, ceramics and plant-dying demonstrations, orchards and herb gardens along with music and dance performances in an open-air theatre.
Unique place. Best spent 7 Euro! The place is magical. Entire place to see takes about 1 to 2 hours. It has a lot of amazing things to see. Pictures looks great. All stuff is friendly and ready to help. I would love to come back.
Agnieszka Rach — Google review
I visited this lovely open air museum Lychnostatis on Sunday the 31st of July. It has so much to see and lots of little details, prepare for at least 1,5-2 hours to spend your time there. The entrance fee was 7 euros and you got a map and translations of text written in Greek in many languages, including Finnish. There's also a possibility for audio guide should you want one. The bus stop is really close, just tell the staff in the bus that you're trying to get there, they'll know the right bus stop. To be honest, it would be better to visit this mostly garden-like place earlier, maybe in May or June, or then at the harvest time later in autumn. Then you would see more of those beautiful plants they have there. But, it's worth a visit anytime, in my opinion. It's not open on Saturdays and it's not open until late, so check the opening hours from the internet before you go. There are toilets and a cafeteria. You can get drinks and food there as well as buy some local products, if you wish. In the cafeteria they gave me freebies: the pears grown there. They weren't as sweet as the pears I've been eating but that was it for me because I'm not one for sweets. They were just perfect. 👍

What a wonderful museum we visited on a Wednesday and took part in their Grape Feast. I even got to tread grapes and do a bit of Greek dancing. The museum is very eco-friendly, being built completely from recycled building materials. Can't rate Lychnostatis high enough. We thought it was wonderful and Can't wait to visit again

beautiful museum with such a romantic and warm feel. The lady who works here is so friendly and kind, and there is so much to see: Tree garden, historical farmhouse, school, middle class home, shepherd’s hut, fisherman’s hut, chapel, herb garden, sculptures, incredible lockdown-inspired art made from pills! We spent 3-4 hours here taking our time to appreciate everything and listen to all of the audio guided tour, however I’m sure it is possible to do it faster. There is a car park and a side exit to go straight to the beach afterwards! There is also a café with very reasonable prices.

What a beautiful place!!!! I can't say how much this needs to be visited! So beautifully done. So much information. Shows the beauty of Crete!

This is a stunning, unassuming place to visit. Well presented depiction of life and working practice of locals in the past. From shoe making and textiles to bee keeping and herbs, gardening, soap making, cheese making and so much more. Also regular workshops and a cafe and beach access. A gem of a museum in easy reach on foot from the coastal resort of Hersonissos

I can't rave about this enough. We had the most amazing time here. 8 Euro to enter and it is worth it for the upkeep for the museum. The staff are friendly and helpful. The toilets are clean. My favourite thing was the herb drying room, the smell was immense.
Hayley Stride — Google review
Such a lovely and unique place to spend a few hours. We began with a short video about the founding of the museum which was very touching and so much time, care and attention has gone into creating the spaces you walk through. Just stunning!

Beautiful place, and it had so much more to offer than expected. As someone said in the reviews earlier this is perfect for a cloudy day. There is also a cafeteria with drinks/snacks/food inside.

Absolutely lovely museum. It was bigger then expected and the receptionist was very friendly. It is right by the sea and has lovely views when you go up the house. Only €8 euro entry and I would recommend getting the audio book for when you walk around.

Eclectic restaurant
Salis, an unassuming eatery located on Akti Enoseos 3 in the New Marina of Chania, is a unique addition to the culinary scene. Unlike traditional Greek tavernas in the area, Salis offers a farm-to-fork concept that showcases locally sourced ingredients, many of which are produced by the owners themselves. The restaurant successfully blends its picturesque harborside location with a trendy ambiance.
Great overall experience! During our time in Greece, most servers were disinterested and not very friendly however the servers here were sweet and attentive. We ate here for dinner. It was so good, we came back the next day for lunch. Everything we ordered was delicious. A few highlights were the mussels, sea bass and eggplant with miso. The eggplant was out of this world!
Sophia Garrett — Google review
One of the best in chania (non-traditional) Service was one of the best so far, the staffs from the open kitchen looked a bit annoyed when we entered and left (but I thanked for the food). Served bread was a 1+, same as every other dish. I took pictures of the menu, see next to the review.
M. (Plumber) — Google review
A disappointment. I know I am only a lone traveller and naturally they would give priority to their local residents. I get that, after all you will not be seeing me again after my holiday but you would be with the locals. That’s understandable. However, I trust you could make a few fire heaters for those poor tourists sitting outside who had to endure the strong wind by the sea at night. It’s not that difficult to anticipate given that it’s October and situated at the harbour front. Coming back to the food, the food could be good if only they could be served hot. The chicken I ordered is lukewarm at best and it’s down right cold and unacceptable to eat. I don’t think that’s to do with the cold wind although it had the certain effect of stealing the last bit of heat from the food. Service is just mechanical as how tourists are being treated. They can serve and they treat the locals far nicer but just not to the tourists. It’s a real disappointment! The wine list is huge and amazing! Such a shame that this restaurant is not really for the tourists. Food 6/10 (a solid 8/10 if served hot), service 6/10 (again a solid 8/10 to the locals), ambience 8/10, value for money 6/10 (8/10 if I get the right treatments as to the locals). Disappointed!

We had an incredible light breakfast here. Rich Greek yogurt, fresh fruit, Americanos, and an amazing pastry basket with warm, fresh bread, butter, and fabulous preserves. Plus the environment cannot be beat! Perfect harbor views and beautiful decor. And some cute cat visitors! Highly recommend.

I ordered the duck and purée, my duck was very undercooked. They did offer to fix it but by then I was over the meal. The atmosphere is romantic and in a high tourist area close to the water. Great spot for a date night or something similar.

First class location by the seafront at the old Venetian port. We were greeted by the owner himself and service continued to be impeccable throughout the night. The waiters were professional yet still friendly and personal, made you feel taken care of without being uncomfortable. Food was contemporary, innovative and absolutely delicious!

We only had breakfast there. 3 options, fresh food, nice bread. Great views.

My husband and I had the most wonderful experience at Salís. We both had fish and were amazed at the service. I’d never had someone debone a fish for me right in front of me. The view at sunset was remarkable. We would have eaten here more than once during our trip but we wanted to try different restaurants and patronize some of the great establishments that weren’t on the water as well
Ayisha Joseph — Google review
We had a lovely dinner at Salis. Out of many dishes we've tried and enjoyed, our favourite was the octopus carpaccio. They also have an extensive wine menu. The kitchen closes at 10PM (at least during the low season) so make your plans accordingly.
Sila A. — Google review
Restaurant located in Chania port, we were expecting more looking the reviews but fish quality was not fresh neither tasty and prices are high than others. Service was fine but not the best. Octopus was not tasty, fried squid better to use mayo to have some taste and mussels were full of onion. Basically we did not taste any fish that evening… you can try mozzarella that was good.

You have to trip salis if you go to Chania! It is just a very unique fusion of traditional Greek receives and sensory genius all at once! The wine list is impressive and the service excellent - and the prices are very reasonable

Wonderful restaurant in the harbour with delicious food, extensive wine list and a beautiful restaurant. All of our items were excellent and tasty with generous portions. Service could be a little more attentive but overall a fantastic place to eat. A little higher price point than other restaurants in the area but totally worth it.
Umesh Kumar — Google review
The food is brilliant and a modern twist on both Greek and global influences. This is a welcome addition to the up and coming Chania scene. The wine list is very impressive and there is a monthly rotating set of wines that will let you try various wines. The cocktails are well balanced and include creative twists on classics as well as creative ones. Attitude of the staff can be strange at times, oscillating between professional and friendly and condescending.

Incredible food at reasonable prices. Octopus carpaccio was great, tuna tartare was also fantastic and of higher quality than the average in new york city. Really a great place.

Greek restaurant
Peskesi is a cozy and charming eatery that offers traditional dishes from the Greek region. With its rustic-chic ambiance, featuring stone walls and a bar, it aims to showcase the forgotten aromas and flavors of Cretan cuisine. Located in the center of Heraklion, within the restored historical mansion of captain Polyxigkis, Peskesi provides an exceptional dining experience based on pure and natural products from the Cretan land.
Our meal at Peskesi is why travel is so great! On our trip to Crete we found Peskesi because of the Google reviews. We had high hopes for a good meal but were gobsmacked by how phenomenal it was. We now wish we were staying longer so we could have more meals here. The space is beautiful and cozy and has everything you want from decor. When we arrived just before 1(opening) on a Sunday. Everyone else there was a local with a reservation for a good Sunday feast. They were able to get us in and the place stayed busy as groups came and went. The staff were all beautiful knowledgeable and kind. We took their advice on our ordering and they had an intimate knowledge of Cretan cuisine and gastronomy. Had surprisingly great and well paired local wine and the meal really took off! While we were here two other solos came in. Disciples of this church to great food. It is the kind of place that brings people together as they explore Cretan cuisine. I am beyond thrilled with how our meal went and I applaud the fine people making this special restaurant run. They were kind, humble, and knowledgeable. I’ll be back if I can! This is exactly why I love to travel.

To get it out of the way, here’s why I gave four stars to the best restaurant in Crete: they messed up our reservation. We called several days in advance because we knew how popular the place is, only to discover upon arrival they didn’t have us on the list because they probably didn’t put our name in correctly. My advice is to make sure they got your name right before you hang up the phone. We were seated after all but not where we supposed to be (outside), and then we were served by three waiters, which seemed a bit disorganized and took away from the overall experience a little bit. On the other hand, the food was amazing. We decided to go to Peskesi twice during our holiday, which says a lot about how much we liked the food. We tried several appetizers such as ham on toast, tzatziki, stuffed zucchini flowers. Our main courses were goat meat in yogurt, pork glazed in honey, smoked pork chops, blue crab. Even though the dishes are filling we always made sure to take desserts, and those are super-tasty and huge, especially the cheesecake. On top of all the food you order, they always bring a small appetizer, a dessert and rose liqueur on the house. It’s a nice gesture, very common in Crete. As far as the experience goes, the 40 herbs spa ritual is something unique I hadn’t experienced elsewhere and it is a perfect little touch at the end of your feast. The restaurant is elegant yet cozy, with beautiful gardens and interior. I highly recommend everyone visiting this place!

Really special atmosphere, the restaurant with consciousness. They cook from products grown close in the area. Attentive service, very delicious food. The portions are big, as everywhere on Crete. They served us some local dessert and drinks on the house after all food. We enjoyed our visit, and also we liked the way of cleaning hands at the end 😄 The only thing to remember- you need to book the table in advance

Farm-to-table restaurant that focuses on serving Cretan dishes made of great quality local produce. Service is attentive, food is impeccable. Getting a table without a reservation is next to impossible in the peak tourist season, do reserve ahead.

We had an amazing experience at Peskesi. From the service to the food, it was 10/10! We would fly back to Crete from England just to have this food again. Special thank you for Kosmas who really looked after us, such a great guy. Thanks for making our experience memorable! But not to mention all of the other staff who were also so lovely! Plenty of vegan options available, so anyone will be able to enjoy this restaurant. We would recommend the mushroom stew. We would recommend this restaurant to everyone who is visiting Crete!
Mia Patel — Google review
Can't imagine a restaurant having this high of a rating out of near 10k reviews before I went. Now I get it. Definitely make reservations in advance! I went back for a second time within two days. Still so good! I was curious and read the bad reviews. Somehow I realized they indeed say they're fully booked every day, but they usually can still squeeze out some time for guests. I'm also concerned about how some reviewers say the restaurant chooses their guests by appearances. Nonetheless, I love their sustainability efforts in sourcing local and responsibly. The no waste and farm-to-table explanations took up one entire menu - keep up the great work!

This is truly one of the best restaurants I’ve ever been to. The atmosphere in the old building with the nice courtyard is super cozy. I felt right at home when I got here. We didn’t have a reservation so we had to wait at the bar for 10 minutes. But that was something we really enjoyed! Maria, the barkeeper started us of with great local drinks. The best waiter in the world, Vasilis, came to get us and showed us a nice table in the back, in a corner of the restaurant. Now to the food: simply wow! Their whole motto is farm to table and you can taste it in every bite. The menu shows how far the food has travelled across the island. Yes, everything is local Crete food. They can tell you the farm of every dish and even have a olive oil sommelier that can show and explain the different oils. The first time we went, we ordered the lamb - which was the best lamb I’ve ever had - the salad with figs, almonds, apple, and walnuts and the pan fried cheese. Everything super tasty. It’s not your typical Greek restaurant where you order some Gyros and Tzatziki- it’s way better! It was so good, we went back on the second day. Both days, we had lots of amazing food and great local liquor, Raki and Ouzo. The alcohol is also home made on a local farm and even though I barely drink, I didn’t have a headache the next morning! We‘ll definitely be back! I can’t recommend this place enough!

We visited for dinner after reading about this place on TripAdvisor. It was supposed to be gluten free and vegetarian friendly. My friend has severe allergies and the waitress working our table was able to answer all of her questions. I am able to eat everything so I was very happy with the roasted goat with yogurt sauce. The goat was perfectly tender and melted in my mouth. My son ordered the sausages cooked over a wildfire and served on rosemary. It was so delicious! At the end of the meal we were given a local sweet made from semolina. My gluten free friend was given a sour cherry preserve.

Great find just around the corner from the park! The entrance looks like just a quiet corner, but the restaurant itself is quite big. Staff is friendly, the food is locally sourced, and I enjoyed all the dishes we ordered: the shrimp, the snails, the zucchini flowers, the octopus, and the bread. I would come back if I'm back in Crete again.

We were honestly BLOWN AWAY by this restaurant. We both agree that it's in the TOP 3 BEST RESTAURANTS we ever visited. WOW. We don't get easily impressed but the food here was on another level. The combination of flavours and textures, the presentation, the service, everything was top notch. Not even mentioning the extra touches such as mentioning in the menu the distance from the actual farm they're sourcing the main ingredients from. Or that they have a SEPARATE MENU just for the olive oil !!! So many choices. I asked for balsamic vinegar to go with my olive dip (and complimentary freshly baked bread) and the waiter told me they don't have it. What? He then told me that they actually use a combination of moscato wine and lime juice to create a substitute. When I tried it...oh boy. So much better !! Amazing. (couldn't take photos of everything we ordered because we were too busy eating it. The bill came to 84 Euros) We can't wait to come and eat here again!

Divine dining During our 3 day visit in Heroklion, we came to this place twice for dinner. As soon as our flight landed and we got to our hotel at 12 am, this was our first stop. The waiter greeted us with big smiles and open arms, and politely told us dinner would be served til 1 am. We shared some escargots (divine!), lamb with rice (so comforting after a tiring flight) and a green salad made from local organic ingredients. We tried to hurry to avoid keeping everyone from going home but the waiter actually came to offer us a free dessert and after dinner drink! We promptly came back the second night to try what we had missed the night before. The fried zucchini flowers were flavorful and crispy, the pork was juicy and tender, Cretan salad was delicious. The Cretan hospitality was warm and genuine. All the staff greeted us with such warm smiles and kindness. We loved our food as much as we loved the people. Thank you for making our journey so pleasant and unforgettable.

Really good food in general, the service was excellent with plenty of small details: - if you eat mussels or shrimp they bring you a ball of lemon, mint lukewarm water to clean your hand - same thing before desert with a plant based liquid of their creation - they offer a quite original desert ( some sort of almond puree ) with a house made geranium raki which was very good The food was very tasty and comforting, only the desert ( their touch on a baklava ) was a bit heavier than we wished for ( a bit too much nuts and too filling for our taste). I ll happily go again

Every dish was delicious. We came back twice because it was so good. The inside is big, but I recommend making reservations still. This place should be on the Michelin Guide list.

All the reviews are real. Great food, nice atmosphere, perfect service and the best wine list and recommendations. We was group of 10 and we try so much things and everything was perfect. The snails, the salads, Cabbage Sarmi, everything was very delicious.

If you are going to one place in Heraklion you have to visit Peskesi. It's a top notch restaurant living by the line "from field to the table" which means they grow most of their ingredients on their own or get them from local farmers. The dish presentation is spotless, so is the taste. We enjoyed the variation of beetroot salad which is a starter served on the house. For the main we had a daily special of shrimp past and a one of mostly recommended meals - the young goat in Greek yogurt. Both dishes were amazing. For the wine you can totally trust the waiters who can not only recommend a dish to your liking but also pair it with wine. The staff is professional and very helpful. I highly recommend this place!

Good atmosphere and food. Peskesi’s unique selection of dishes combined with fresh ingredients creates a memorable dining experience. I appreciated that many of the dishes roots were explained on the menu. Service was impressively fast and the food quality and value was good. Additionally, this restaurant accommodated for food allergies very well by indicating allergens on the menu. I recommend the fried, stuffed zucchini flowers and wine-cooked octopus. I did not find the mains particularly noteworthy as the meat dishes felt dry and lackluster. Nonetheless, a good restaurant with a great concept that is worth trying. Definitely make reservations in advance.

This is definitely the best meal we’ve had in Greece so far. The flavor is top notch. The service is amazing. And plus the suability idea behind the operation. Want to come back to Crete just for this!

We spontaneously visited this lovely Cretan restaurant because of a delayed flight. The food, service and atmosphere was genuinely wonderful! Our favorite dishes were the organic salad, vine leaves, fisherman’s pasta and grilled bream. As for dessert, the citrus pie is simply delicious and the complementary alcohol-free liquor so refreshing. Definitely make sure to visit if you are in Heraklion!!

We were both excited about our reservation at Peskesi. The restaurant has a farm to table concept with each item on the menu being sourced ~100 km or less from the restaurant. We had the slow cooked pork chop steak that were finished by smoking with sage and the slow roasted lamb. The lamb was cooked perfectly. We were set on having dessert, the cheesecake looked amazing but we just didn’t have the room. Service was great.
Albert Reger — Google review
We had the zucchini flower stuffed with cheese for starters followed up with three main courses: Syglino (smoked pork chop - worth the experience), stuffed vine leaves, and grandma's chicken pasta (chicken comes with bones and a bit dry). At the end, they gave us a complimentary dessert and Gin with ice. Overall great experience. During lunch and dinner rush, best to make a reservation in advance to avoid the wait.

DO NOT MISS !!! This dining experience should not be missed, while visiting Crete. Make sure to reserve as early as possible. The food is farm to table Cretan Cuisine. There is a great wine selection. We started with olive oil testing, our waitress Tiffany was very helpful with the selection. She was very kind and explained us everything ( even where the olive gets it name from ) to make sure we have a good experience. We are really happy with our food selection, all posted here. But i’m sure every dish in this restaurant is cooked to perfection…

Amazing dinner! Peskesi showcased a variety of appetizers, such as a tasty salad with figgs, nuts, and almonds; we then shared some main dishes, from which I recommend the white-mushroom handmade spaghetti. The environment was fascinating, the restrooms clean and modern, and the service was simply excellent: they even brought us flower-scented wet wipes! Best restaurant in Heraklion so far.

Unforgettable. From the beginning till the end, it was such a perfect experience. Very neat business, farm to table with impressive service. Words are not enough to describe our feelings. Loved it. In the beginning a kind gesture of soup, salad, lamb with rice, all increased the joy bite after bite. Atmosphere was great, all crew were well motivated and seemed to be enjoying their role in this good business. Highly recommended.

Great restaurant! The foods are sourced from local farms and are very fresh. The dining atmosphere is good, you will enjoy a cup of special tomato soup before the meal, and a special dessert and local liqueur will be offered after the meal.

Simply put, it was an excellent experience, from food to service. The restaurant atmosphere and surroundings are beautiful—a combination of nature and architecture all in one. It is definitely recommended for quality food.

We went to this restaurant today (18 October 2023). We were a walk-in. They were brilliant - the waiters handled my difficult dad really well. The food was also delicious and appropriately seasonal. It was Cretan food and it really was delicious as well as beautifully presented. They take their food and service very seriously. A lovely experience (aside from my difficult dad but that wasn’t their fault - they were faultless in everything!)
Anthea Demetriou — Google review
Peskesi serves classic regional dishes in a snug, rustic-chic atmosphere with stone walls & a bar. The farm-to-table and back to the farm concept is really well done. The farm isn't too far away either so the food is absolutely fresh and gets as close as home cooking as possible. I visited in the off season so I just did a walk-in each night and took the opportunity to try out different menu items. This is the way to go. I can't even begin to imagine during tourist season what the reservation backlog would be like. Items ordered: Local lamb with traditional yogurt: slow cooked, boneless lamb with kefalotyri cheese and yogurt, served with rice cooked in the lamb broth. This dish was absolutely incredible! Smoked traditional sausages in their wood fired oven: 5 out of 5 stars for the deep flavor bursting with each bite. Local mushrooms with anthogalo cheese and oxymelo in the pan: this is as fresh as you can get! Amazing! Body Balance herbal tea: a mixture of 40 local herbs. I can't even begin to describe how this was the most amazing and soothing herbal tea I've had in my life.

Paresties is a mediterranean restaurant in Heraklion, Crete that aims to achieve nostalgic flavors and special blends. The restaurant introduces a new approach to the traditional way of cooking, and as such, elevates the simplest dishes to something more than just food. With highchairs available and seating that can accommodate large groups, Paresties is perfect for families or friends looking for a delicious meal.
A fantastic dining experience with a view! We were really impressed with the food choices at an affordable price. We decided to order a number of starters, including: the Cretan pie, oyster mushrooms, Greek donut, and feta spread. All of the dishes were fantastic, but the Greek donut covered in a savoury sorbet was the highlight for me. They also had a great wine selection, as well as craft beers. They ended the dinner with some complimentary draki and fruit which was really appreciated. Would highly recommend dining here during your stay in Heraklion!

The setting is beautiful and the food tastes good in general. What was weird is some of the portion sizes. The gyros appetizer was huge, while the octopus main was tiny. It would not have been enough to fill me up on its own, even for lunch, although it was absolutely delicious. We also had the goat risotto but were a little shocked and disappointed to literally get a bowl of risotto rice with nothing in it but two chunks goat meat, still attached to the bone. It looked so boring and plain that I didn't even take a picture of it. The flavor was bland as well. But then again that portion size was huge compared to the octopus, way too much to finish, especially since there were so little different flavors and ingredients in it. We got two free desserts: watermelon and delicious chocolate ice cream, both extremely welcome on a hot summer day, and quite surprising as we were only there for lunch. Overall, a bit expensive given our experience.

I had a pleasant dinning experience of this restaurant. In the middle of the ruin town, this is one of the nicest looking romantic restaurants with nice ambiance. Sitting in the restaurant with welcoming friendly staff, the service from Nicos was fine. As to the value of the service, we indeed enjoy the big dishes for a very reasonable price. First 3 courses were just perfect and wonderful! And for main course, some improvement can be made with the octopus, the olive source was yet about to bring the best flavour of the octopus, suggest to use something a bit sour and aromatic flavour, even charcoal grill would be nice. Never the less, I still recommend to come and try this restaurant although Peskesi was the most popular one around, but this restaurant has potential to compete with a bit more improvement and experiment of the fresh taste of Greece!

Delicious Food, Mixed Service I recently dined at Restorant Parasties in Heraklion, Crete, and the food was undeniably good. The big summer salad, Cretan cheese with fig jam, sea orzo, and stuffed calamari were all delightful choices. The atmosphere was cozy and inviting. However, I was disappointed by the service, which didn't match the quality of the food. Overall, a great place for satisfying flavors, but service could use improvement.

Fantastic, innovative Cretan cuisine in a beautiful restored villa. Definitely get the omelet. Portions are huge and delicious. Staff is very attentive, knowledgeable and friendly. Wine list is great. Ask for a table on the back terrace for an amazing view of sunset.

Outstanding culinary experience! The Fava is not only delicious and the entire menu is a delight. The Sfugato is both huge and tasty. My main dish, flanken short ribs cooked for 48 hours with beetroot and zucchini cream, was exceptionally tasty and perfectly cooked. The beautiful restored villa sets the perfect ambiance, and the attentive and friendly staff make the dining experience memorable.

Raki Ba Raki is a small, lively restaurant in a vintage Greek setting with deli and grocery sections. The menu features Cretan mezes - small plates of vegetables, fish, seafood or meat - which are delicious.
It was very good to eat here. Atmosphere, tastes, service were very delightful. We enjoyed every moment. I definitely recommend it. The portions are not big like typical Greek restaurants and prices are a little bit high but it is not a typical Greek restaurant. It was an experience and you should try to live this experience 👌🏻

You order the most expensive meal (Tuna pastrami) and they forget to bring part of the dish. The Octopus was good in taste but really small portion. Was expecting more after 4.5 rate…

We really enjoyed this restaurant: the food was great, the service good and the location really nice. We recommend you give the tuna steak a try. It's cooked medium rare and it's one of the best we ever had. The moussaka was also very nice. The calamari looked better than it tasted but still decent overall. Overall bill (no alcohol) came to around 70 Euros

Situated in an alleyway, this restaurant serves one of the best salads we had (Raki ba raki salad), with amazing dressing and ingredients that went so well tgt. Mains were amazing as well with the pancetta almost melt-in-mouth. Was served some traditional raki at the end of the meal that is supposed to aid in digestion. Worth a visit if you’re passing by this village.

OMG. One word…AMAZING! Our last day in Greece and the last restaurant we tried and my personal favorite. There were 6 of us so we tried a bunch of stuff. All of our dishes were good. I hate anchovies but found myself enjoying the fresh ones dipped in olive oil. Cretan Ramen was very unique. Fresh snapper with veges was outstanding and filleted perfectly tableside. Good Greek dark beer not seen on other menus. House wine was very good ( I found many to taste spoiled). Even the two teenagers were happy! Atmosphere was great, not loud at all. Very reasonable prices. These Chicago foodies loved everything!!!

An amazingly magical place with delicious food and impressive service. The restaurant has an excellent team in the kitchen had all the flavours hit right on spot. Would recommend eating the cold sea cod Pasterma with lemon and also the oxtail in main course made my day.

Saying this was one of the best restaurants on our trip to Greece would be an understatement. This IS one of the best restaurants we have had the pleasure of dining at during our trip to Europe! The sheer skill shown by the chefs with mixing fantastic quality produce with well thought out and exceptionally balanced seasonings and spices is not to be missed. Stand outs include the grilled chicken - exceptionally succulent, super juicy while having a crisp outside. The cod Pastirma is exceptional - they have used a mixture of spices in an amazing olive oil to bring out the flavours of the cod. The service was charming, the location magical. Make this a detour on your itinerary of Crete if you weren’t planning on visiting Re

Remarkable! There are those restaurants that you never forget amd this is one of them for me. The vegetable salad was fresh and vibrant - incorporating local ingredients I have never experienced before. I can honestly say it was the best salad of my life. The red snapper was caught only hours earlier and cooked to perfection - filleted table side. The filo feta was crispy and bursting with freshness. The service was sophisticated and charming. A seriously epic lunch in a beautiful little town. Absolutely exquisite!!

The best way to start your vacation! We went into this place on a whim because we had not eaten for 5 hours, and we ordered something that would not take too long to make. 5/7 minutes later we had two giant plates full of food with the most amazing authentic Greek flavours. Not the mention the absolutely amazing dessert that we got at the end, with a traditional “snaps”
Ivar Spjotum — Google review
My wife and I ate lunch and dinner here today. We LOVED our lunch, it was simply perfection. We had a green salad and the filo feta with various jams. Would recommend 1000% We had to come back for dinner, and my expectations may have been too high. The food was good, but it was nowhere near the culinary excellence we had the pleasure of gobbling up earlier in the day. I had the grilled chicken and it was okay. My wife had the cretan ramen and she was very happy. We also tried a couple of desserts, and they were good, but again I was a bit let down. Not because they were bad, just didnt measure up with some of the other dishes we tried. Presentation wise I give 5 stars. We are still gonna come back for the dishes we first tried, and i look forward to try some more of their cooking.

Raki Ba Raki in Rethymno's Old Town blends in well with the rest of the local taverns in the town and can be easy to miss. In a cozy and warm setting, the tavern serves imaginative and fresh dishes inspired by traditional Cretan and Mediterranean recipes. Always made with seasonal ingredients coming from the best local sources on top of handmade dough and pasta, the result is flavorful comfort food for your palate. Went back more than once to try out a few items that caught my eye: Semolina pasta with vegetables, white wine, sesame and herbs Sfakiani open faced pie with beef, tomato, aged graviera cheese and mixed herb pesto Fried mushrooms with rosemary and sour grapes aioli Wine from Zoumberakis and Strataridakis Winery. Located in the town of Kaliviani at the Balos Lagoon, Gramboussa Restaurant is a must-visit when in Crete. It offers a true taste of Greece with its typical Greek cuisine that exceeds expectations. The flavors are exquisite and the atmosphere is simply amazing, transporting diners to the heart of Greece. The cozy and welcoming ambiance adds to the dining experience, making it even more enjoyable.
Five stars are not enough for this place. You must stop eating here. Everything is wonderful: the view, the food, the atmosphere, the staff. I’m still dreaming the Moussaka I tasted here at night! We took two starters and a main dish and the quantity was more than enough. Bread and water are for free, likewise the fruits. Warmly suggested!!

Vibe and atmosphere were great. Very nice looking tavern with fruits and vegetables growing all around you. Food was ok as well. I got the leg of lamb and it wasn't anything special. What bothered me was the lack of service. I've been to many Greek restaurants and understand the difference compared to American service. But everything was so slow here. I asked 4 different times to pay my bill and we even walked up to the bar were all the staff were standing to flag someone down. That took about 30 minutes. That was frustrating since it was getting late and we just wanted to leave. Other tables around us were getting frustrated as well- one table was seated and didn't receive menus until they asked 10 minutes later. Great vibe, good food, but be prepared to wait a long time.

Stunning restaurant, incredible food, and a hidden cocktail bar. We loved Gramboussa so much the first time, we decided to go back. The restaurant itself is a beautiful location, set down a narrow street overlooking their gardens where they grow fresh produce for the food. The food is delicious, two members of our party had the fresh fish of the day and said it was the best food they’ve had all holiday. Everyone else equally loved their meal. Once you’ve finished your meal, be sure to walk down to the cocktail bar hidden at the bottom of their gardens, where you can have a bespoke cocktail made. There’s no cocktail menu, you just say the kind of flavours you like and mixologist will make you a bespoke cocktail. Gramboussa is a must for your trip!

Gramboussa has to be the best restaurant on the island. I cannot recommend this establishment enough. They have their own farm, and everything here is fresh.
