Messina

Messina is a harbor city in northeast Sicily, separated from mainland Italy by the Strait of Messina. It’s known for the Norman Messina Cathedral, with its Gothic portal, 15th-century windows and an astronomical clock on the bell tower. Nearby are marble fountains decorated with mythological figures, like the Fontana di Orione, with its carved inscriptions, and the Neptune Fountain, topped by a statue of the sea god.

Museums
The Interdisciplinary Regional Museum of Messina (MUME) houses a diverse collection of local and national artwork and artifacts spanning from the Middle Ages to the 19th century. The museum's modern structure cleverly incorporates historical relics, providing visitors with a unique opportunity to view stone, mosaic, metal, and painterly artistic works that reveal much through their scars of existence. Notably, the museum boasts outstanding organization and descriptions, making for a smoothly laid out exhibition space.
This museum is something of an enigma. To be clear, I was here and you will be here to really see one artist. Caravaggio. He has two works here, raising of Lazarus and an adoration of the shepherds. The raising of Lazarus is amazing. The detailed expressions of shock, amazement, fear and gratitude play out across faces and in body language of the very fortunate few who bore witness to this miracle. This painting is worth the visit. There are several pieces by other followers of Caravaggio and their response to his style is interesting to see. There are other pieces in the museum including a large carriage which might be of interest. As to the enigma. We visited on a Saturday and there were probably 20-25 employees in different areas. They kind of followed us from place to place, which is normal. But I believe we were the only visitors in the museum. Large swaths of the interior and exterior were covered in scaffolding like a shroud! And the layout of the museum was a Bit confusing. The docents guided us my sign language as the only people who spoke English there were the tourists. Overall I was very glad to see the Caravaggio paintings. And I was sad that there were not more people there. I hope they will be able to finish repairing the building and perhaps do some more marketing to let art lovers know what amazing treasures lie inside. There is no restaurant or cafe on site. Your bags need to be placed into lockers before staring your exploration. There are many lizards playing in the shrubbery outside. There is street parking a ways up the street, but nothing onsite.

Wonderful museum, just not quite enough information about different exhibits. The Caravaggio is stunning and worth a visit on its own. Good air conditioning and nice staff

The Museo Interdisciplinare Regionale (MuMe) or Regional Museum of Messina (Italian - Museo regionale interdisciplinare di Messina), is an art museum located on the northern coast of the city of Messina, Sicily, Italy. MuMe illustrates the development of art and culture in Messina from the 12th to the 18th centuries, with outstanding figures such as the renowned artists Andrea della Robbia, Antonello da Messina, Girolamo Alibrandi and the famous Caravaggio. The original collections came from the Museo Civico. After the earthquake in 1908 these were expanded by the addition of paintings, sculptures and precious decorative works from damaged or destroyed buildings, thus creating a collection of paintings and sculptures by internationally known and local artists, together with a variety of other objects d'art. In Room 10 you can find Caravaggio's works Adoration of the Shepherds and Raising of Lazarus.

From the moment you enter the grounds of this beautiful museum you can see the rubble of history cleverly strewn around the modern structure. A spacious quiet opportunity to view stone, mosaic, metal, and painterly artistic works, many fascinatingly reveal much through the scars of their existence. The Caravaggio's are mesmerizing as is the huge coach. The building is designed to lead you through all its levels giving glimpses of the works as you move around. A really pleasing visit.
Andrea Philipp — Google review
Huge and interesting collection, staff is polite and guide you the museum nicely. The caravagio pieces are amazing. The collection has paintings and archeology pieces , the museum was almost empty of people. The have discounts for youths and students of certain specialties You can get there with the tram for just 1.50 from the centre. I recommend taking the daily pass for 4 euro, it covers all public transportation, bus tram and others.

A lot of artifacts and paintings. I learned a lot about the history of Messina and it is something you must visit on a trip to Messina. I took form the city center a bus and a tram to arrive.

There are incredible pieces in here. Some of the signage have English translations. The art is unbelievable and there is a huge amount of it. If you are a cruise ship passenger, you can get tram tickets from most newsagents and get there and back very easily. Otherwise its about a 30 min walk each way from the port.

The Interdisciplinary Regional Museum of Messina is a place of great cultural and historical importance. Located in the heart of Messina, the museum houses a vast collection of artworks ranging from the Renaissance to the contemporary period. One of the most notable features of the museum is its collection of paintings by Antonello da Messina, one of the greatest painters of the Italian Renaissance. His works, with their attention to detail and emotional depth, are a true highlight of the museum. In addition to Antonello, the museum also houses works by other important artists, including Caravaggio and Annibale Carracci. The variety of works on display offers visitors a broad overview of Italian art. The museum itself is housed in a historic building, which adds an additional level of charm to the visit. The exhibition halls are well organized and offer a pleasant and welcoming environment for the exploration of art. In conclusion, the Interdisciplinary Regional Museum of Messina is a must-visit for art lovers visiting Sicily. With its rich collection and welcoming atmosphere, it offers a cultural experience of great value. If you find yourself in Messina, be sure to pay a visit to this wonderful museum.

It’s a way from the city centre, there’s a tram stop close by, or a 20 min walk from the train station. It’s undergoing a 7 year refurbishment at the moment. If you’re a Caravaggio fan, then go, although the lighting could do with some improvement.
Kevin Morgan — Google review

Walking around the city of Messina without map, we stumbled upon this different-looking building so we went down to see what it had to offer us. It IS a church!!! It is rich in history (just google it, thanks :-) ) but to see it in person is magnificent! For someone who is keen on architecture, this is a good study!

Churches & Cathedrals
The Cathedral of Saint Mary of the Assumption, located in San Francisco, is the main church of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese and serves as the mother church for Catholics in three California counties. It features a mechanical clock that displays the noontime movement of bronze statues. The cathedral replaced its predecessor, which was built in 1853 and still stands today under a different name.
The Duomo di Messina is a remarkable example of Sicilian Norman architecture. Built in the 12th century, it has undergone various renovations and expansions over the centuries, incorporating elements of Gothic, Renaissance, and Baroque styles. The cathedral's facade is adorned with intricate sculptures and reliefs, showcasing a blend of artistic influences. The most iconic attractions within the Duomo is the Orologio Astronomico, an astronomical clock installed in the cathedral's bell tower. Crafted in the 1930s, the clock is an impressive mechanical and artistic marvel. It features animated figures that come to life at noon, illustrating scenes from Christian and Sicilian history.

The Cathedral is worth visiting as it's one of the top Messina's landmarks and historic attractions. It might not astonish you with beauty or greatness at once, especially if you're a seasoned traveller, however the Cathedral's worth is hidden in its throughout-century history.

The Cathedral of Saint Mary of the Assumption, also known locally as Saint Mary's Cathedral, is the principal church of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of San Francisco in San Francisco, California. It is the mother church of the Catholic faithful in the California counties of Marin, San Francisco and San Mateo and is the metropolitan cathedral for the Ecclesiastical province of San Francisco. The cathedral is located in the Cathedral Hill neighborhood of San Francisco. The present cathedral replaced one (1891–1962) of the same name. The original Cathedral of Saint Mary of the Immaculate Conception was built in 1853–1854 and still stands today. It is now known as Old Saint Mary's Church.

Beautiful and historical. The central duomo or the main church of Messina. The architecture is a delight to observe. The clock tower has its own speciality. It have many moving parts and there is a show of all moving parts everyday at 12:05. There is also a treasure in the cathedral that is rarely open to public view. The inside paintings are beautiful. (Translated by Google) One of the most beautiful fountains of the Italian sixteenth century. Intense work by Giovanni Angelo Montorsoli. Symbolic paradigm of Messina history. A masterpiece of design and implementation, it was erected on the occasion of the construction of the aqueduct that brought water to the city from the fumarias, in particular that of the Camaro, equated to the great European rivers in the symbolic transfiguration given by the four male statues of the main basin . High up, above the last of three pools, is the statue of Orion, the mythical founder of the city, with his dog Sirius. (Original) Una delle più belle fontane del Cinquecento italiano. Been there on August 22, for the 4th year in a row. I did not notice major changes / improvements from last year but I have to admit there is notuch to improve. Went for the Blue Moon menu option, with a change in one of the courses that might have messed up the kitchen therefore one of the courses was mistakenly skipped. We highlighted it, the chef came to apologize and the course was then brought. Food is simply amazing. Service could improve if they present you the dish when they bring it to the table, rather than just saying "enjoy" without even mentioning what you are about to eat. The online menu with qr code is a bit odd and has a couple of spelling mistakes. Location is beautiful, with a view of the coast and the Stretto di Messina. I wish they could re establish the tables on the edge of the quay as in 2018...much more romantic

We had our dinner there with my wife. We ordered the tasting menu of 4 dishes per person. The last meal for both of us was canole. Unfortunately, we found hair in the inner filling of the canole. We showed the hair to the waiter and sent the dessert back. Later, the cook came and said it wasn't a hair, it was a string that broke from the cloth he was drying the ricotta cheese with. I'm sure that it's hair. however, even if there is no hair, a foreign substance coming out of the food is not acceptable for a restaurant of this quality. moreover, it was surprising that no apology was made on such a mistake. Only the explanation that it was not hair and so on. We did not have appetite any more. Moreover, the check was taken from us in full as if everything was normal. I think it's normal for this restaurant to have a piece of cloth coming out of the food. I really don’t understand that how is it possible that a zero customer happiness policy restourant is recommended by Michelin.

Located on the northern coast of the city, Bellavista offers a stunning view of the Straits of Messina and Calabria. During warm seasons, guests can dine right by the sea. The restaurant specializes in seafood dishes, including raw fish appetizers, pasta with sea urchins, and a variety of fresh fish prepared to order. The family-owned establishment combines local and marine culinary traditions with modern presentation.
From the phone booking to the actual dinner it was undoubtedly a superb experience. Service is very attentive and not intrusive. Extensive and very well selected wine list; the sommelier was at hand with knowledge and advice. Idyllic setting facing Mainland Italy, the Strait of Messina and the sound of the waves lapping against the shore. Dreamy! Food was well presented and every course had the freshest ingredients. Special requests were met with discretion and no hesitation; the chef was very understanding and accommodating. Thank you. It will be on our map for future reference. Well done 👏

The restaurant Bellavista offers excellent views on the straight of Messina and the close coastline of Calabria. There is an indoor and an outdoor area which is both very pleasant. The menu offers a good choice of antipasti (appetizers), primi (first dishes), and secondi (main courses). In addition, the wine list covers a great selection of regional and national wines at decent prices. The food was very fresh, great in preparation, and very tasty. Our raw fish was very fresh, and the selection of different types of fish was excellent. The prices may be higher than in other places but adequate to the quality, and the quantity served. The service was kind and courteous. Like any of my reviews, of course, this review is being made related to the type of restaurant, the restaurant's gastronomic objective, and the overall context. I recommend this restaurant for the great food and stunning views.

In town visiting and found a very local and authentic Italian restaurant. The dishes were served by the course to include the introduction. Taste of the fresh seafood, mix of flavors and blends from the region was delicious! My portion size was satisfying, but still gave a Beautiful presentation. The cost was in-line with the area and I found it to be a little less costly (compared to where i ate yesterday and I didn't have enough serving to fill a slice of bread at a higher price). The staff was very warm, and friendly. We felt at ease to talk about being here, the area and the food. The restaurant boast a beautiful atmosphere that gives decor and style with a desire for us to wear nice attire. I enjoyed all the early lunch and I have plans to return.

We stumbled upon this restaurant completely by chance, but it was a wonderful dining experience and a fantastic way to end the day. This small, cozy restaurant promotes the slow food philosophy and offers a diverse menu. Our tasted dishes were perfectly prepared and delicious. The guests at the restaurant are served by the owners themselves, as well as a very helpful and knowledgeable staff who are ready to patiently listen and advise you. I highly recommend this restaurant and send sincere wishes to the entire restaurant staff. 🥃

The service staff was prepared to handle international customers. The Introduction of dinner had a rhythm and balance in presentation, style, flavor and delicate taste. The atmosphere was beautiful, and i flew from California and this has been my favorite choice, thus far. We, my lovely eating "assistente" and I will return. Please look forward to full size meals as well as artisan presentation of dishes.

A friendly place. Caponata was dreamy. Inspiring wine selection focused on local producers, as it should be. The perfect answer to "no fine dining, please", but authentic and genuinely excellent place. Unpretentious and very rewarding.

We are still here eating and enjoying everything. Wonderful innovatively married with traditional food! Kind and funny service and dog-friendly! The Nero-Rosso primo and the olive oil ice cream is to die for. (I only managed to take one photo due to too attractive food...) Ok... Everything is! Grazie!

Stopped in for lunch today and it was absolutely lovely. it is a “slow food” restaurant focused on locally sourced seasonal ingredients and traditional recipes. The dishes were beautifully presented and tasted just as great. The cherry on top (or should I say candied caper) was the service - so attentive and excellent English. Explained each dish to me in detail. Thanks Roberto!
