Bolton Steam Museum is a quiet and well-maintained museum in Bolton, featuring impressive textile machines and engines dating back around 150 years. Visitors can explore the well-protected exhibits and enjoy guided tours by dedicated volunteers. The museum also hosts steam days where all the machines are in working order, offering a unique experience for visitors to witness these historic marvels in action.
In all my years this was first visit with four year old grandson. Thought he would if list interest within ten minutes but we stayed just over an hour, he loved checking out the workings of the machinery. No charge but we made a donation, well done to all volunteers.

I took my dad for his 80th birthday. What a great atmosphere under live steam. We spent about 3 hrs there, good cafe for light refreshments & the whole place is run, by volunteers. Would visit again.

Plenty to see here on steaming days. Plenty of information boards explain the exhibits, but if you still have any questions there are friendly, knowledgeable volunteers on hand.

What an absolutely brilliant place to spend a few hours with so many mill engines in steam on bank holiday weekends. The staff are great and very knowledgeable. There is a book stall with a very good selection of new and secondhand books on all subjects especially technical books. This must be the best book shop in the North West, a shame it's only open on bank holiday weekends.

Nice area but we couldn't access the Museum as we visited Bolton on a day the Museum isn't open to public..we look forward to coming back again.

Quite, calm museum in Bolton. There are some amazing machines, engines inside. Well protected and well maintained textyle machines. Some of them are produced approximately 150 years ago. A volunteer Mr. John, guided and informed us. Very kind and dedicated gentleman. There are some steam days which all machines are working.

Very well maintained with some amazing exhibits. A must see for anyone with an interest in steam powered machinery and industrial history.

We spent a brilliant 3 hours at this fantassteam museum. All the volunteers we chatted with were so knowledgeable and enthusiastic about the engines, especially the ran most of them one after the other and explained how each one worked and the differences.
I can't recommend this place as a must-see museum.
Chris Buckett — Google review
Great museum. It's a shame this place isn't lottery funded as it is a great reminder of our past. The volunteers are extremely informative and passionate about steam. We donated £5 on entry and then as we left decided to put £20 in. We will definitely come back for one of the bank holiday steam days.
A flat cap is essential.
Ian Paterson — Google review
Great museum, actually bigger than you expect. The pictures, even on their own website don't do it justice. And you will find your self spending a little longer there, than you initially thought. The lady at the entrance was really helpful and explained to me that the engines are all running on electric, but every so often, the engineers take turns in powering them up by steam so you can see how they would really operate. Which was great and makes you want to stick around a little longer. This seems to be 15 minute intervals for different engines. You can tell, as an engineer will often be oiling up one, and pulling levers and cranks, getting it ready. And you only truly appreciate the power of them when they fire them up with steam.
It's also impressive (and a shame) that they have run this museum and got it to this state without any exterior funding besides donations and personal funds, what so ever. Despite applying to the local council and National Lottery heritage fund. Images and slide shows detail them refurbing the engines and parts, setting them up, cleaning, installing things for the public. It really is a labour of love.
In short, well worth a visit.

The volunteers do a fantastic job maintaining this awesome collection of working textile mill steam engines. Free entry but donations can be made to Northern Mill Engine Society.

What a lovely venue to learn about steam mechanics of the past.
Car park scattered with fly tipping but not their fault so be aware of this issue.
Staff are all volunteers and have done an amazing job of the site. From real live working machines to replica working scale models to sell the idea to prospective customers of the past. Staff were really attentive and offered help at any time. Ablutions on site with light snacks and hot beverages available.
At the time of this review Apple Maps location incorrect so use Google maps.

Such enthusiastic volunteers who are so helpful and friendly. Great place to visit for families and enthusiast's alike. A hidden gem.
The Smithills Open Farm is a beautiful dairy farm with many activities for visitors to enjoy. The animals are well taken care of and there is plenty of space for people to walk around. There is also a tractor ride up to the top field which is great fun. The Dairy shop on site sells dairy products made on the farm which was new to me. I highly recommend a visit to the Smithills Open Farm!
The customer care here is amazing. All the staff we met were happy to help. Thie farm visit is perfect for kids day out. You can but a bag of animal feed to feed some of the animals for 50p a bag. There is petting time a few times. The place has wide gravelled paths to walk around. There is free parking.

Both my sons (8 & 15) and I absolutely love this place. The staff are lovely, friendly and very helpful if you need them for anything.
There are so many activities for the whole family to do and such a fun day out.
The animals are all so amazing, friendly and well looked after.
No matter how often we go, it’s like the first time all over again.
The staff deserve recognition and praise for all they do and their dedication in making this farm, the wonderful place it is.
Thank you for giving us lots of smiles and aww moments ☺️

Absolutely loved our visit today at Smithalls Open Farm. Lots of lovely animals. Which we got to feed for £1 which I think is more than reasonable. Accessible toilets. The farm itself was in my opinion mostly accessible. Minor improvements need to be made to some of the paths.

Loved it! Best farm I've been to. We had a nursery group and were looked after by Lauren. She stayed with us all day, making sure we attended all the events and saw all the animals. She was really knowledgeable and had all the time in the world for the group. The children loved everything about the farm and were really engaged. So reasonably priced too! And the ice cream is delicious 😋 can't recommend enough.

Love it here, so much to do and see. The animals are all well cared for, the play areas are great, outside space is lovely for a walk around. There's a tractor ride up to the top field for £1.50 each and you get to feed the horses and donkeys which is lovely. Loved feeding the animals, especially the baby animals in spring and there are loads of well stocked hand washing stations around. Really enjoyed watching the cows being milked and then buying an ice cream later on. There's a little shop which I'd not seen before selling dairy from the farm, saw the ladies making the butter today so bought one to try. Pony riding and the little reptile house are great too.

Absolutely love this place. We brought our friend visiting from Germany. She Absolutely loved it as did us and our toddler. Bottle fed lambs, held chick's and guinea pigs. Met lots of amazing animals.
Highly recommend the tractor ride and the ice cream! And the new kids play area is fantastic!

Very good! Not been since I was 5. Lots have changed. You can feed many animals and the staff are very helpful and knowledgeable. The petting zoo is my favourite; you get too meet many animals and at the end you can pet animals such as Guinea pigs rabbits and chicks. It’s great. I’d recommend you not to come on a rainy day though it was blistering cold. Still enjoyable; will be returning! 🤩🤩🤩🤩

LOVE Smithills Farm!
I think this is the 3rd time my family and I have visited. Every time, the whole family has so much fun.
When booking (online), I recommend buying your animal feed and tractor ride as the feed is vital for the experience.
They have many animals you can feed from Alpacas to baby lambs 🥲 the animals are extremely friendly and we’ve never had a problem with them taking food out of your hand very gently. Even toddlers can feed them.
The tractor ride is definitively fun for the little ones, and even the adults.
Highly recommend the “meet the baby animals” sessions. The staff come round with all the newborn animals and give you chance to hold them, while also teaching some fun facts!
Cafe has nice staff and a good selection of food and drinks.
Highly recommend as a day out for adults who love animals, or a family day out.

Our kids absolutely love coming here. We went pumpkin picking and then went all around the farm. The ice cream here is fantastic!
Really educational for the kids and adults alike.

Awesome place to visit at any age. The animals all look well looked after. There is a short informational talk they do where you can hold one of the younger animals, which is a nice experience to add to your visit.
The meerkat talk hasn't been on every time I've been, but hopefully I catch it next time.
I went during Halloween, and the pumpkin fields were a great addition to the farm.
Also, get the Icecream from the farm store at the end its amazing.
I would recommend it for a date or for families looking to go somewhere engaging.

Really good farm, plenty to see and do from donkey rides, to a tractor ride out to feed horses and donkeys. Pets Corner is brilliant too. Can even watch the cows be milked. Has a big play area inside the ground which is fab. Plenty of toilets.

Me and my boy had a wonderful time today! Fed the cows, got licked by the cows! Had a tractor ride. Special donkey bread given to feed the donkeys on the tractor ride which I thought was a lovely touch. The staff are all smiles and hellos. Large slides and play area for kids! Donkey rides and you can watch the cows getting milked! Some stuff like the pets corner we didn't do as my son is too young but I will definitely go back for more. I think I enjoyed it more than he did!

Brilliant day out for the family. Plenty for kids to see and do. Reasonably priced. Great little tractor ride. Fantastic ice cream. Kids loved the learning area especially when they got to hold all the little babies.

I take the kids quite often to Smithills. It’s a great day out for a few hours. They get to hold baby animals in pets corner which they love. Mine love feeding the goats for some reason. Food there is good. Plenty of space to eat. They love the Donkey rides too. They are constantly adding to the place so there will be new animals coming too.
Kirsty Herricks — Google review
Great day out for Easter and the kids loved it, so many happy animals to look at, great demo of milking the cows which was interesting.
Only gripe was you need more staff, this could pay for itself as when we went on the tractor ride only half the people getting on put tickets in the box, whilst I was in the shop getting the tickets the family in front let their child help themselves to snacks and a drink then walk out for them to only pay for their hot drinks! Toilets want cleaning/checking more often but I’m guessing Easter weekend is just abit more busy than usual!
We will be back as it was great fun for all of us.

Writing a review for Smithills Open Farm is challenging because while most of the day was enjoyable, the experience was marred by a few staff members and strict dining rules. Despite the fantastic interaction at the petting corner and a delightful tractor ride, the limited indoor seating options, coupled with strict regulations on outside food, proved frustrating. Despite spending money at the cafe, being unable to eat our own food in the sheltered area was disappointing. A staff member's rude intervention and the unpleasant demeanor of some cafe staff members further detracted from what could have been an otherwise wonderful day. I really hope Smithills Open Farm see this review as some staff need training on basic manners, particularly the elderly women in the cafe area that made us feel so uncomfortable it ruined our whole experience and dissuades us from going again.

This is a fantastic and truly amazing experience for everyone. My kids love it as much as I do!
This farm is truly one of the best days out you can give a child in the North West.
Visit this place. It's great value for the experience you gain.
You can wander around, feed animals, learn about dairy farming with a milking demonstration.
They have live demos all over the place.
They show you how milk is produced. They make their own milkshakes, butter and ice cream which you can sample on site.
You can buy not only gifts such as teddies and toys in the gift shop, but fresh eggs from ducks, pheasant and chickens amongst other produce.
Visit the café for lunch.
Take a tractor ride, feed the donkeys.
Sit in the pet corner and handle the rabbits, hamsters, chick's, lambs, goats, owls...even snakes!
Have a donkey ride!
You can spend the entire day here. My kids love this and they will remember it for years to come.
I believe this farm is as close to the most perfect day you can spend as a family. Make some memories. Visit it....It's fantastic.

Visiting Smithills Farm proved to be a delightful experience, enhanced further by the wonderful weather we had on the day. Spanning just over three hours, our adventure through the farm allowed us to explore a rich variety of activities and sights.
The farm presents an impressive array of animals, a feature that stands out prominently. From domestic to more exotic species like llamas and alpacas, the animal variety kept us engaged throughout our visit. The donkey rides were a standout, offering both fun and great photo opportunities. While the tractor ride was relatively brief and focused mainly on the donkey area, it added a rustic touch to our visit.
Children and adults alike will find the play areas wonderful. They are well-maintained and offer a great space for kids to enjoy themselves, providing a balanced visit with both learning and play involved.
A highlight of our visit was the interactive sessions that allowed us to get hands-on experience with some of the smaller animals such as rabbits, guinea pigs, and chicks. The engagement with the animals was both educational and fun, offering a chance to learn while getting up close and personal with the farm’s smaller inhabitants.
What added a cherry on top of our delightful visit was the opportunity to interact with the farm’s star attractions, the goats, llamas, and alpacas. These sessions not only brought joy but were a great learning experience, especially for younger visitors, offering them a chance to understand and appreciate the animals better.
In conclusion, our visit to Smithills Farm was a harmonious blend of education and entertainment. The beautiful weather, coupled with the vibrant atmosphere of the farm, made our day both joyful and memorable. Whether it’s the great play areas or the opportunity to interact closely with a wide variety of animals, Smithills Farm offers something for everyone and stands as a great outing destination for families.

Absolutely fantastic place to visit! I would suggest going for the whole day! My Godson and friends had an amazing day. During the week it was nice a quiet too so we could explore more freely. Pets corner was a fantastic experience, particularly enjoyed feeding the lambs and holding the chicks. There are two great little parks and would be a good venue for a kids party too! Will definitely be coming back! Great place for school trips too, the staff look.after you really well.
The Octagon Theatre is a bustling performing arts venue that showcases an array of shows, including classics, contemporary productions, touring acts and family-friendly performances. It also boasts a cafe/bar where patrons can indulge in delectable cuisine before catching a matinee. The restaurant's fare is exceptional and marks the beginning of an enjoyable afternoon experience. The staff members are friendly, accommodating and prioritize guest safety by wearing masks. Following renovations, the theatre has acquired a more modern look that beckons for future visits.
Friendly and helpful staff. The theatre feels much more modern after the renovations. Can’t wait to go again.

What a wonderful 8 sided little theatre jammed full of electronics. I am rather deaf but the acoustics are perfect. And this musical version of the Book Thief was spectacular. What a talented cast!!

I visited the Octagon Theatre for the first time last week to watch Little Shop Of Horrors with my mum and daughter. I LOVED the show - everything about it was brilliant… the acting, the accents, the singing, the stage and set, all of it! I found a welcome note on my seat from the theatre as they knew it was our first time there - a lovely (and clever!) touch. The size of the theatre was great and really helped to bring the show to life right in front of us - it just goes to show that you don’t need to spend a fortune on tickets for the big city theatres to have a fantastic night! The bar for drinks and snacks during the interval was great too. We’ll definitely be back!

Always loved the Octagon. Decided to go and watch Kes and also see what the new refurbishment is like. It does look more modern and has a better foyer but surprised by the theatre area itself-it is smaller than before and no longer has seating all the way around?! So it's no longer really an "octagon" and doesn't really have that unique feeling any more. (I'm hoping that this was perhaps just the way this particular play was staged and maybe the other seating was hidden behind the set?)
As to the play itself, while the acting was excellent, it was very short at just an hour and confusing in places, especially as it wasn't obvious at first when an actor had changed over to be a different character (multiple times). I don't understand why they didn't hire more actors to play the other adult parts and give them a chance to shine. The set was static and bland and the whole presentation was very unimaginative.. especially in regards to the woman representing the bird. She didn't interact much at all with the other actors and there was nothing birdlike about her, besides her voice, which slightly made up for it as it was beautiful. It all came across as very stripped back and trying too hard to be clever, at the expense of generating an emotional connection in the viewer. I will return but all in all came away disappointed.

Just back from Spring and Port Wine was simply brilliant, fantastic show and amazing cast. First timers at Xmas for A Christmas Carol and booked up already for Ladies Day! Never experienced theatre like this you feel totally immersed in every performance. Thank you for a wonderful night again!

A fabulous theatre to go and see productions, pretty much all the seats give a full view, won't spoil the performance in any way. With enough bars for pre drinks and able to pre order at half time and reasonably priced. Ladies have a bit if a queue for the bathroom at peak times, gents OK. Now with a restaurant on the ground floor, have yet to try for the food.

Fantastic! Watched the Jeeves and Wooster production and it was simply brilliant. Laugh out loud funny. The set was amazing, superb acting especially as there were only 3 actors!

We were asked to decorate the large room up stairs for a Baby shower party in the nightmare before Christmas theme a couple of weeks ago and I was pleasantly surprised how big the room was, with its own little bar to serve your guests and plenty of tables and chairs. It's so different to your pub, hotel or golf club venues, you'll be pleased. I'd recommend taking a look to see if it accommodates your event or party. It's right in the middle of Bolton town center so it's in a perfect location for all your guests to get to.
The venue is really clean and the staff were very helpful whilst I was there setting up.

This was my first time visiting the Octagon; it’s a charming venue just off the high street with a bar and comfortable-looking pre-theatre dining area.
I saw the auditorium in its thrust-stage format (for ‘Bouncers’) which allowed for decent views wherever you sat- though the central bay is best!
I’m looking forward to returning for Little Shop of Horrors.

Went to see Little Shop of Horrors and was in awe of the story telling. The entire cast had incredible singing voices and accents and each really embodied their characters. The puppetry of Audrey 2 was incredibly organic and really brought that blood thirsty plant alive. Loved how Audrey 2 was eyeing up the crowd during the interval!
Despite the set being static, the use of a prop here and there created a multi-locational feeling.
This was a perfectly made recreation of a favourite musical of mine and I couldn't have asked for anything more! I really recommend going to the Octogan as it always puts on a great show!

This is a lovely intimate entertaining space. I particularly liked the steep angle of the seating as it meant you had a clear view of the performance area from every seat, no twisting around to see between the people infront of you.
The acoustics were great too. It was so refreshing to hear voices and guitars without being overpowered by over amped sound systems.
I'd definitely be interested in coming to another performance especially if its as good as the Book Ends doing the Simon and Garfunkel through the years tour.

We watched Animal Farm. The show was great.
The team on site are very welcoming. You are able to pre order half time snacks and drinks in advance to allow you to avoid the queue (which moves quickly) during the interval.
The theatre is fresh inside and is accessible.
Our seats were a bit short on leg room, my dad asked an usher if he would be able to move to a free seat with more leg room. It was sorted with no fuss.
Everything was reasonably priced and I would have no issues recommending the venue to you.

My first visit to the Bolton Octagon Theatre and I will be back! It's an intimate and comfortable space and the staff are helpful and polite.
I was here to see "Blonde Bombshells of 1943," a dramatically slight musical drama that worked best as an exercise in nostalgia. It was elevated by the wonderful performances of a talented ensemble cast. My afternoon went with a swing!

The Octagon provides great facilities, especially important with a disabled wife. There is ample parking next to the theatre. Staff are warm, welcoming and helpful. The auditorium style venue makes you feel very close to the action with an intimacy not offered by larger theatres. I've enjoyed every visit and look forward to many more. If you don't want to take in a show, just enjoy a light meal or drink with friends or family.
Turton and Entwistle Reservoir is a man-made body of water surrounded by lush forests, offering a peaceful ambiance for visitors to enjoy. It has a scenic walking path that encircles the reservoir's calm shoreline, providing an excellent option for dog walks or hiking enthusiasts. Visitors can also park their cars in the nearby car park, allowing them easy access to the reservoir. Despite being affected by tree felling due to disease killing vegetation, it remains a beautiful place worth visiting.
Went early morning, very quiet and peaceful. Such a lovely walk, car park was a decent size. Enough spaces to choose from.
Quite muddy and wet in places, so walking boots/wellies needed. The only downside was that there were hardly any bins around for dog bags.
Definitely would go again. It's a lovely walk and lots of little paths taking you different directions to explore

Overall a great, hour-long walk around the reservoir.
The road leading up to the reservoir is fairly narrow, and the parking itself is limited and full of pot holes, so take your time when approaching it.
The recent deforestation around the reservoir has also created an eye sore, not to mention the use of heavy machinery has drawn mud onto the pathways which are liable to flooding. Walking boots are a must!
Juris Savostijanovs — Google review
Good walk but really the views have been decimated due to the felling of thousands of trees due to a disease that is killing the vegetation. Will be years before it is restored. The path can sometimes be waterlogged in places

Beautiful reservoir, makes a lovely walk on a sunny day and there are lots of benches on the way round. A bit sad to see some areas of the woods completely cut down and more bins/dog waste bins would be good as I have only see them at the exit gate, although still nice and clean despite this

Jumbles Country Park is a peaceful park that features a reservoir and woodlands, ideal for birdwatching. The park has a small car park that may fill up quickly during summer. At the beginning of the walking path, there is a charming cafe serving hot chocolate and ice cream in summer. Visitors can choose to walk around the reservoir or explore the wooded area, which includes a babbling brook with abundant water sounds and places to observe nature up close.
When you arrive there is a good car park although not huge so I can imagine it gets filled really quick in summer.
The little cafe as you start your walk is lovely, nice to get either a hot chocolate for the start of your walk or an ice cream in summer.
Follow the paths and this will take you around the reservoir or you can venture off to the right and go through the more wooded area, this is particularly lovely for me as there is a babbling brook along your walk with lots of water sounds and places for you and the dog to get close to the water. I would definitely recommend a walk around here with or without dogs and with or without children.

Lovely place for a walk with or without a dog. Google maps advised it was closed today (Tuesday). It wasn't. Only the cafe is closed Monday and Tuesday for a couple of weeks. A couple of points. The Bolton Museum, Aquarium and Archive is a compact museum spread over three floors that showcases local history, painting, decorative art and freshwater fish. The exhibits are well presented with ample lighting and concise information. The museum's Egyptian gallery stands out with its impressive collection of artifacts including the recreation of a pharaoh's tomb. Although the aquarium is small, it houses several endangered species that are part of the museum's successful breeding program.
Went with my children on a Sunday and had a great time.
Aquarium was interesting. The museum is small but rich and the building it sits in is impressive. Some very interesting exhibits and interactive installations for the kids. Would definitely go again.
Parking was free (Sunday only). Watch out for attendants though and follow the rules(park in bays etc)Didn't cost us a penny the whole day.

A small but complete museum, with great treasure and history! We enjoyed the Egypt mummy display, the sculpture, the coffin ⚰️; learned the textile industry history of Bolton, and an aquarium at the basement floor.
It's free entry and great place for kids to learn and play. There's also a library at the ground floor.

This is a relatively small museum set over three floors. The attractive displays are well lit and information is succinct and mostly easy to read.
The history of Bolton is well illustrated but the highlight of the museum is the Egyptian gallery. There is a wealth of artifacts and the recreation of the inside of a pharaoh's tomb is impressive.
The aquarium is small but several of the species cared for are endangered. It was pleasing to see the success that the museum's breeding programme has had.
Allow about 90 minutes for a visit. My only word of warning is that young children quickly realise that the upper gallery has a good echo. A pair of earplugs may help!

Loved the fact that it was not too overwhelming like other museums. Just the right selection of things to explore. The highlight was the Egyptian section, with artifacts, stuffed animals, a short video projection they have to depict the Egyptian afterlife belief and yes the mummy 😲
There is a small aquarium downstairs too which my girls loved 😍

I had the pleasure of spending some time here recently. It was amazing. For a town museum it was absolutely amazing. There were so many things children and adults could so. I avoided the dressing up chest nothing on my size!😀. The refurbishment is done to a very high standard. It is still a work in progress. I was absolutely delighted. So many things made to explore. There were children visiting and they were discussing in a group about their learning. The staff are friendly and welcoming. There are folding chairs for convenience. A small gift shop. The film of Bolton then and now was great. Done so well. I'd definitely say it is worth going to and enjoying. The gallery of Bolton painters and sculptures was a surprise. All in all excellent.

Moses Gate, Country Park Farnworth is a vast 300-hectare natural space that offers various activities such as walking, cycling and horseback riding. There are numerous lakes and trails to explore with plenty of opportunities for wildlife sightings. Parking is free despite looking small on Google maps, and the play area offers a great place to unwind for families. The ice cream van nearby may be expensive but toilets are conveniently located near the play area.
Moses gate is a great local family park with three mini ponds you can easily walk around, that are suitable for all ages an abilities.
Total distance is about 1mile all the way round. The beauty with Moses Gate though with how the park is designed you can walk each individual pond on its own, giving you the ability to tailor your stroll.
The park also offers a few nature trails inside the forest, which make for a great adventures for the kids with an aray of wild life too be seen.
The park is easy access an has some great picnic areas.there is also a large soft ground play area situated near the water fall for the kids play.
Plus as a sweet treat you will often find a ice cream van in the main cat park!!
The are Public loos available but these arnt always open.
Parking is easy too get too an park with disable parking available. Plus depending on how much of a stroll you would like you can park higher up or right down bye the lake. Making this park perfect for those who my have difficulty in mobility.
The path ways of the park are suitable for both wheel chair an also push chairs. But be mind full as on winter days these can be quite muddy so could become challenging..
Ben Taylor (Benji) — Google review
I didn't explore it fully but what I did see the country park is nice.
I went on a day after heave rain during the night so was quite muddy. Parking is OK within the park and there is parking available on roads outside of the park.
Three small lakes and a river that runs through.
Ice cream van on site, not the cheapest but definetly not the dearest. He takes cards and cash.
I can imagine that the park gets VERY busy in the summer.
Marc Owens — Google review
1st off parking is free, although on Google maps the parking lot looks small I didn’t find a problem parking. The play area is good, even for a bank holiday it wasn’t too busy. The walk area was nice although the ice cream van was extremely expensive, their are toilets right next to the play area. Overall a nice day out!

Visited with relatives from Bolton on New Year’s Eve, good to see so many people out on a mild dry day. Got some coffees an Ice Cream from the Ice cream van. Nice coffee at the van. Great treat for the family. Good walk around the pond kids loved feeding the ducks.
Asif Akhtar — Google review
When the sun is out and the ground is dry, this is a brilliant place for a nice walk, feeding the swans and ducks and also just sitting next to the water and relaxing. There is a park for children and plenty of grass to sit and play and have a picnic. There is also plenty of parking too.
Maqsood Amenjee — Google review
It's a nice enough park for a day out with some nice nature parts & lakes and river. The grass is quite muddy & not ideal for a picnic mind. The ice cream van is extremely expensive with the average price at £4.50 for a cornet. This place would really benefit from an on site cafe.

Beautiful park with 3 lakes & next to the River Croal. Ideal for all the family but no public toilets. Wheelchair & pram friendly but tarmac pathways can be a bit bumpy in places. Rock Hall is boarded up which is a shame. Plenty of wildlife. Lots of picnic & normal benches along with waste bins. Free parking in multiple little car parks but there is a height restriction at entrance. Kids play area is well kept. I'm assuming there are volunteer litter pickers because everywhere was so clean & tidy, well done 😁
Claire — Google review
Great Park for seeing wild life. Hundreds of Canada Geese, swans and different varieties of ducks. Lots of parking space and disabled spots near the front. The young and old seem to love it here. Walking round the lake is good but I prefer to go off behind Rock Hall to the paths, woodlands and hills around the river and up to the old canal as my dog can then run off lead with out fear of him being chased by geese and swans. Lots of bins present which are vital for a dog walker. Nice little playground for children. The river can get v rapid so take care with dogs / kids who are likely to go jump in.
So sad that the Old Grade 2 listed Rock Hall is left derelict. It has a fascinating history related to Samuel Crompton and the start of the World's Industrial Revolution. It would be amazing to see it restored in to a cafe / museum / Rangers Station with wildlife information, selling duck food and ice creams etc (as it would be in more prosperous borough's of Greater Manchester.). It could be a gold mine if repaired and if a bit of money was spent on the park with perhaps a small parking fee that I'm sure people would be happy to pay to help get this park to the way it should be.
Please remember that the birds should be fed oats / seeds / frozen peas / lettuce (and nuts for the squirrels) NOT BREAD which gives them poor nutrition and makes the lake water rotten and unsafe. Lovely to see both the very old and the very young all out feeding the animals. Toilets are available but I don't know the opening times. The car park gates are closed at dusk.
Come on Bolton, let's get this park spruced up and made into the real attraction that it could be.

Very nice park! It has a lake, a playground and a good-length walking trail(s). It's a very good place for dogs. My dog loves it here. Once I had my dog off-lead and we were walking near the further body of water (from the car park) which has a layer of moss on top and my dog ran straight off the deck and into the dirty water. I assume he thought it was grass because it looked green. That was the first and last time he's ever been swimming. I'm glad dogs instinctively know how to swim. He was a mess and shook his fur once he was out when splattered me with the dirty water and we were both messes. It was an embarrassing walk to the car

Smithills Hall is a historical estate located in Bolton that features a variety of architectural styles dating back to medieval times. Visitors can take self-guided tours of the property, which showcase its evolution from the Middle Ages to modern day. The estate boasts well-maintained formal gardens and a chic mobile coffee shop, as well as ample parking (though some low cars may struggle with speed bumps). Despite its popularity among tourists, Smithills Hall rarely feels crowded and is staffed by passionate volunteers.
Lovely stunning walk which you can mix and match how far or wild you want to go. Also a few surprises every time I go. My beagle loves it here!
Update 2022.
Still one of our favourite places and no matter how many times we go, the walk never gets old!

We were beginning a walk from Smithills Hall and were pleasantly surprised. The gardens are lovely, there is a small picnic area outside where we sat and had a coffee and there is a lot of history to the house. Inside the house there is plenty to look at and read. This isn’t a full day experience, but a lovely place to stop at for an hour or two, explore and have a spot to eat. Oh! Also it is free to enter, which is always great.

Like so many places in Lancashire this beautiful and historic building is seriously under-marketed. It is superb. We had a tour with guide Pat who was extremely friendly and knowledgeable . Just what you want. We weren't rushed and we learned a lot, and we went round on our own afterwards as well because there is so much to take in. The room presentations were great. The house and its history are fascinating. The grounds are lovely too. I definitely recommend you visiting this remarkable historic Hall.

I wasn't expecting much but I really enjoyed my visit here. I visited on a cold, wet December Friday and the heating wasn't working but there was a warmth about the place, arising, I think, from the wonderful staff and the ancient timbers and stones. The building has evolved over nearly 700 years and there is interest in every room. I especially enjoyed the great Hall and the panelled dining room. The restaurant is excellent and justifiably popular. I was grateful that they fitted me in on a busy day and very much enjoyed the light lunch I had.

Fantastic historical old hall. Self guided tours which go through the medieval to modern periods of the hall. Free entry, with great passionate and knowledgeable volunteers. Unfortunately the old cafe/restaurant has gone, but a chique mobile coffee/cake out on the rear grounds is open. Never massively crowded, good car park to the front with overspill available outside the front gates in the estate grounds. Some bad roads on approach to the hall, and some nasty speed bumps for those with low cars, expect to do the diagonal.

You might want to check out the "Bolton Market" in the heart of downtown. It's a great spot for buying fresh meat, fish, and seafood at reasonable prices. The market is known for its cleanliness and ample space, making it suitable for larger groups. Plus, there's a convenient on-site parking lot, although it's at city center rates. Just a heads up, though, the toilet facilities may not be up to par in terms of cleanliness, so keep that in mind before your visit. Enjoy your trip!

A well structured market, well known for varieties of products sold across diverse cultures and race. I so much love the friendliness of sellers mostly the food market section. Fruits, plantains, sea food, turkey, soft and hard chicken, home appliances, clothes, chilli,...just to mention a few. As an Nigerian, you would get almost all that you want except the green veggies which is not on sale (just the pumpkin and sometimes water leaf).

Queens Park is an excellent example of a public park that is full of character and history. Its terrace design and garden feel make it a must visit park for anyone who is fond of parks from the 'Victorian' era.
.
The park offers a range of different walks and loops, however, it can be quite steep in parts.
.
The children's play area is well equipped and maintained + close to the cafe and toilet facilities. The cafe also offers a decent range of ice creams and coffees.
.
One of the real gems of the park is it's sporting facilities. There are well maintained tennis courts, an outdoor gym with weights! Plus a basketball court. The basketball court has potential but would really benefit from some upgraded hoops and nets.
.
We travelled from Wigan to visit the park and there are plenty of free car parking spaces. The park is also a short distance from Bolton town centre and you can enjoy views of Bolton town hall from the parks viewing areas.
.
In summary, this park is a true Victorian gem and offers something for the whole family. Give it a visit.... You won't be disappointed

The lodge is a hidden gem, perfect for a 30-minute sunset walk or a family outing with kids and dogs. It's described as a piece of heaven, offering clean, quiet, and wild natural surroundings ideal for walking and contemplation.
Beautiful place to visit. Even on a nice day it wasn't overly busy, quite peaceful. There's plenty of benches and areas kids can run and play and there are several bins. I mention the bins because, despite it being a nature reserve, people don't appear to know how to use a bin. There was litter on the ground and in the water. Please, bin your rubbish.

Love the lodge. Nothing like a nice local walk. You'd never guess it was there and only takes around 30 mins. Perfect for a sunset walk to burn off some kid energy

Lovely lake, not too big, nice walk around. 20-30 mins to stroll around. Nowhere to dip your feet in the water really. Popular with dog walkers.

The Victoria Hall, Bolton is an amazing historic building offering a range of events for all ages. The theater hosts fantastic pantomimes and other performances, with great acoustics in the balcony and unrestricted views of the stage. While some attendees found the music too loud and criticized certain aspects of the performance, many enjoyed the affordable Easter Panto production of Beauty and the Beast.
It has great acoustic sound in the balcony and unrestricted views of the stage.

Visited on NYE for a panto Aladdin.. was amazing . Lovely venue and easily accessible for disabilities.. seat were very comfy and roomy enough. Snack sold during interval were reasonable priced. Told we.coyldnt bring out own food and drink inside. But people around me had plenty of their own. So could have saved a few pennies.
The programme was priced at £2.00
The cast were fabulous and will definitely return again.
Toilet facilities were adequate and clean. Only comment on ladies !

Great building, friendly staff and entertaining panto. The kids loved it and a few jokes for the adults too! I parked in the Market Place just across the road, no hassle.

Super affordable Easter Panto at £5 per ticket.
Beauty and the Beast.
Cast worked very hard and theatre staff were friendly and welcoming.
Exceptional Panto Dame with wonderful costumes.
Too many 'fat' jokes though and the music was far too loud, sometimes drowning out the performers.
However, thoroughly enjoyed by our 7 year old and 5 year old. Will definitely be going to next production.

Have been twice now for pantos at Christmas. The closest parking is Marketplace, which is reasonably priced and a short walk to the venue. There are loads of places to eat or have a drink nearby. There is always a queue to get in and the staff aren’t particularly welcoming. The building is beautiful, they ask for cash only for all stalls/programs/sweets which is annoying. Stuff is overpriced and there is a sign up to say you can’t take drinks or food in with you.
Seats are comfortable and the view of the stage is excellent from anywhere. The panto was excellent and so were all the actors for the second year running BUT the venue staff are unpleasant watching over/glaring at the audience which is unnerving. No photos or videos of the performance are allowed until the end - which is totally fine and understandable but I think it’s a unfair to ask a member of the audience to participate in the show and then not allow a quick photo on stage. The woman that told us wasn’t polite about it either. No need for the attitude.
Overall, good value for money and we like the panto itself - but the front of house staff let it down.

An amazing building with lots to offer, It is one of the antique historic buildings we have that is still left in Bolton. For many years people have come to the theatre here to watch all ranges of events unfold. They hold some fantastic events for people of all ages and the Pantomimes are fantastic and very worth their money to watch.

Nando's Bolton Vaults is a chain eatery that specializes in Afro-Portuguese cuisine, featuring flame-grilled chicken doused in a spicy chili sauce. Despite receiving criticism for unclean utensils and inadequate menu distribution, the overall dining experience was pleasant. The establishment boasts attractive decor and well-maintained restrooms, alongside a friendly staff. After exploring the nearby museum and library, visitors can enjoy delicious food and beverages at Nando's Bolton Vaults.
Danny from this store was exceptional! Brilliant service from him throughout! Looked after my daughter without me even asking, cut the corn on the cob for us so it was easy for her to hold and he was attentive throughout! Food was amazing as always! Thank you so much! :-)

Ordered frozen yogurt and wasn't brought a bowl, had to go ask at the counter.
Had the spiced chickpea burger which was nice yet falling apart.
My son had the nandinos chicken burger, the chicken breast was very hard. Check back was done during the first mouthful so wasn't able to give an accurate response.

It is a regular date night location for my Partner and I.
Although I am always spectacle about whether the chicken will be dry this tends to not be the case at this establishment and we have never had a bad meal.
My partner challenges himself to test out any new and especially spicy sauces. The most recent spicy sauce is his favourite.
Our favourite is the sharing platter with 4 mini sides, it's perfect for 2 and the deserts were divine.

I have visited here with my family from Manchester City Centre. This museum and library have us a good day-trip. I particularly like the exhibition about the history of Bolton.
We had lunch in Nando’s after the visit to the museum. Food and beverages are great. I like the interior design which’s vintage.

We selected rice and fries as our sides along with a whole platter. Their courtesy was excellent. Their employees are always willing to assist. The dish was prepared with care and to perfection. This dish receives a rating of 4.5 stars from me. I shouldn't forget their gelado ice cream. It was delicious, especially the amazing coconut flavour.

I recently landed at Nando's for what I can only describe as a life-altering culinary experience: the half a bird meal. Yes, you read that right—half a bird. This isn't some weird mutant seagull situation; it’s a deliciously grilled half-chicken, drenched in their magical peri-peri sauce.
Let's talk about this chicken. It was so juicy and flavorful that I’m pretty sure my taste buds started composing love sonnets mid-meal. Seriously, this bird was more charismatic than half the people on reality TV. Each bite was a fiery samba of spices and grill marks, making me wonder if Nando's had some sort of mystical pact with my palate.
Now, onto the peri-peri fries. These weren't just any fries—they were crispy, golden sticks of pure happiness. They were so perfectly spiced that I half expected them to sprout tiny legs and start dancing across the table. And the coleslaw? It was like the Switzerland of coleslaws—neutral, balanced, and making everyone happy. Not too creamy, not too dry, but just right. Goldilocks would be proud.
In summary, my Nando's adventure was nothing short of legendary. If you haven't tried the half-bird meal yet, you’re missing out on a cluckin’ good time. Trust me, this is the kind of meal that makes you want to ruffle some feathers. So, fly on over there and prepare for a taste sensation—just don’t blame me when you fall head over wings in love with it.

Lost one star due to cutlery being dirty no matter how many times i changed them majority was dirty, they need cleaning properly and then wiping down and drying to avoid marks on them. The other reason was we was given 1 menu between 3 of us which hasn't happened in the past at any other nandos haha, however despite all this the food was lovely, decor is nice, toilets were nice and clean and staff very friendly. Thanks for having us

I visited this place for the first time with my family and the level of hygiene in preparation of the food was shocking. I ordered a mushroom pitta and when we went to pay, we witnessed a member of staff preparing a pitta with her bare hands, no gloves, and holding it in her palms and stuffing all ingredients, again with her hands. She wiped her hands about 3 times on her apron. I complained about this and the manager came to talk to me, I explained what we had seen and she said that they have a vigorous hand washing system where the staff wash their hands continuously. I replied that they may wash their hands, but the apron isn’t washed vigorously! God knows what food and germs could be transmitted from the apron to the customer’s food. The manager didn’t know what to say about this and said she will give this feedback where needed. The whole incident put me off my food and subsequently I cancelled my order of the pitta. I find it disgusting that staff prepare food without gloves and wipe their hands on their aprons which they have on all day, not to mention the sweat off their palms while preparing food in a hot environment, this is cross contamination at its worst! Nando’s leave a lot to be desired for when it comes to hygiene and I certainly would NEVER go to Nando’s again, I’d rather have Subway, where the staff change their gloves after each preparation of food. Shame on you Nando’s, I have only given you one star because zero stars is not an option!
Party and Play Funhouse Bolton is a spotlessly clean and well-organized indoor play center that offers fun for kids. The facility features a large outdoor area, a football pitch, and various play equipment suitable for children of different ages. Visitors are impressed by the cleanliness of the equipment, toilets, and even the menus. The overall experience at Party and Play Funhouse Bolton has been described as enjoyable for both kids and parents alike.
Brought 4 grandchildren today, aged 10, 9, 5 and 4 (3boys 1 girl), lots for them to do in a lovely clean, safe environment. Loyalty card gave me 25% off next visit so that's an unexpected bonus. Food a tad expensive but was really tasty and all staff very friendly and helpful. My new go to place on rainy days
Margaret Kirkham — Google review
The fun house staff gave a warm welcome to us and the facilities were clean and the equipment was safe and lots of opportunities to have fun! I took my great nieces aged 3years old and 17 months and the fun house lost a star due to the pricing which I found to be unfair paying the £10.95 for the youngest who had a small limited play area as she is just toddling. A fairer pricing scale should be in place if the child cannot make full use of all the areas.

Absolutely fantastic experience, we loved the relaxed atmosphere for Santa's breakfast, there was no pressure on the kids to interact which was fab for my shy 2 year old. The soft play is really clean and well maintained. The smaller role play room is also super great and well equipped.
Staff were friendly and helpful and the food was good.
A little overpriced for food but you don't mind when the service and atmosphere are 5 star.

Usually couldn’t recommend this place enough. Lovely and clean and my little boy loves it… however!
We went yesterday, on arrival was asked ‘will you be paying for the baby too’ and nodded to my newborns pram. I said ‘no, she’s not going in as she’s only 10 weeks old’
‘You still have to pay’.
‘What for? She isn’t going in?’
Staff member impolitely responded with ‘well we have bottle warming facilities and nappy changing facilities, it costs us to empty the nappy bin when you use it’ 😳😳😳😳.
Absolutely MORTIFIED!
My 10 week old is BREASTFED (why assume that she is bottle fed?) and did not need the use of the nappy changing facilities in our 2 hours there.
Will not be returning any time soon! Imagine charging for a newborn to be sleeping in her pram/sat on mums lap? And this is in addition to myself and my friend paying for 2 kids PLUS paying for us to sit and watch 🤣😬

Enjoyed our first visit here. Really lovely centre which is clean and well maintained. The additional outdoor play area is a bonus that my kids really enjoyed. Food and drinks are on the pricier end, I paid £10.95 for a sharing platter of nachos which really weren’t great, was very disappointed for the price I’d paid. It won’t stop me returning though as overall we had a great time.

My baby grandson had a lovely time on his first visit. The indoor and outdoor facilities are great. My only reason for not giving 5 stars is that there should be a shorter session availability for the very young children. My grandson is 1 year old and 2 hours is way too long for him. We only stayed less than an hour so really didn’t get the full value of the costs for children +1 years and over.

Been going here for years with my children, when when we lived in Manchester. They're too old now but visited recently with my friend's children. The staff are always so lovely and helpful. I call in advance to book and let them know we will need a table as one of our group cannot stand up for long and they always make sure ro reserve one. It's inexpensive and lots of fun for little kids. The outdoor play area is great in summer. Best soft play for miles.

I booked my daughter’s 5th birthday party here and it was fantastic! Lots of space for the children to play, including an outdoor area.
Nice and clean and well looked after.
The party was really well organised by attentive staff; they literally do everything which was nice as I could watch my daughter enjoy the party with her friends.
Melissa Heywood — Google review
Well kept and a good amount of space to play in. 2 adults, an 11 year old and a 15 month old baby cost us £18 on entry. You can't bring your own food in, so another £39 to feed us. Food quality is poor/average. Slightly costly for a kids play area, as expected. All in all, it's another play area we'll visit once and not return to as there is an abundance of these, but the kids had a good time.

So I visited on Sunday 6th August and I won't be returning! £29 for 2 children is extortionate considering it's only £14 for 2 at run amd jump !
Staff were lazy and uninterested didn't explain upon my arrival what was included in that price or even what the place had to offer, didn't know there was an outdoor playground until it was time for leaving, food was expensive too! £3.95 for a cup of chips. For £29 I'd of expected to of had use of the sensory room.
My advice go to run and jump for half the price. I will say it was clean and well equipped. My kids loved it.
Nichola Rigby — Google review
We had my sons 3rd birthday party here and the staff really looked after us and made sure everything ran smoothly.
All the kids enjoyed themselves, the parents also got involved and had fun.
Would definitely recommend them for a party venue or to get the kids out for a few hours.
Also, see a lot of reviews on here about pricing and how they find it expensive. Yes it's a play centre for kids but at the same time they're a business with overheads. They provide certain facilities we don't have at home to keep the kids entertained for a couple of hours.
They did a great job hosting us and what we paid reflected the service we got.
Thanks for having us.

We just spent lovely afternoon at Party and Play Funhouse. I took my 9 year old daughter and 5 year old nephew, I did wonder if it would be a bit young for my daughter but she happily played for the two hours and my nephew was delighted with everything especially the football pitch and the large outdoor area.
Everything was spotlessly clean, from the equipment to the toilets, even the menus were being cleaned as we arrived!
The session was well organised, we were given a time slot to play and were escorted to our allocated table. I have been to Play and Party many times over the years but as we moved house I haven’t been for a while. Standards have not just been maintained but have improved and I would definitely recommend a visit with little ones.

My 5 and 7 year old love it here. We’ve been three times in about 18 months. The staff have been welcoming and the place is clean. We have to save it for a treat day as it costs us £26 for 2 hours. I then bought a tea and few snacks, so I’ve spent £40, which is an expensive morning out. We’d come more if it was more reasonable. I think the children’s price is worth it but I find it very unfair that adults also pay to get in.
I’ve had to take a star off based on the prices I’m afraid. If you consider not charging adults, I would have more likely brought another adult with me. I hold back on buying the more expensive food and drinks because of this entrance fee for adults. I do believe you’d make more money in your cafe if you stopped charging adults entrance.
The other reason a star has been removed is because I was told I couldn’t bring my daughters’ drinks bottles in. One had water in, the other cordial. I had to go put them in the car. Again, if the entrance fee was more reasonable I would be more accepting of this, it feels like you are bleeding families dry at any opportunity and this isn’t a nice atmosphere, to be greeted like this on arrival. This rule was also not enforced with all families as I noticed there were many drinks from home for children on tables. The excuse for this I got was allergies…. If another child was to pick up my daughters drinks… this could happen with the food you are serving, any child could pick up anything from another table so this was not a good enough reason to stop people bringing in a bottle of water and a bottle of juice.

Went for the first time today and it's one of the best play places I've taken the kids to. The staff are lovely. We were walked to our own table. The lady cleaning the table asked had we been before and when my little lad said no she explained everything with a smile on her face. Made to feel welcome entering and when ordering food. We got a big jug of juice for the kids for £2.95. Very nice food. Very clean I will definitely be back.

Very clean, excellent facilities for kids with multiple slides, mini football room, kids playroom, sensory room and a wide range of food and drinks. I take my son to softplay all over the northwest of the U.K and this one is one of the best. Highly recommended plus is located just three minutes from the motorway.

It was clean and tidy more staff than customers at one point but most were friendly. The prices at food counter are ridiculous £1.60 for a can of coke !! The fish fingers were mostly batter and very greasy as were the chicken nuggets. £18 for two kids meals a coffee and 2 fruit shoots bit of a rip off considering kids didnt eat most of it. Pricing, portions and quality could be reviewed. Having said that the kids loved it but to take more than two (which cost me £40+ for two hours) is expensive and more of a treat than a regular trip.
Jackie Gordon — Google review
Staff are friendly & keep the area nice and tidy, Like most places it's on the expensive side. I'd say probably not worth the £27.15 entrance fee. For one adult and two under 5 year old, plus food on top of this
David Williamson — Google review
Outside play area wasn’t open with no prior warning or notice on the website. Food was very expensive for what you got. £6.50 for a kids box and even more for a kids hot meal that consisted of only 3 chicken nuggets. You couldn’t even take your own bottle of water in. When we emailed about our disappointment regarding the outdoor area we received a short uncaring response. It was a disappointing experience as we have been previously our children love the play area however we felt like it has changed and isn’t worth the money compared to other competitors. We won’t be visiting again.

We booked online the day before - when we arrived we were quite shocked that we had to pay for adults to enter the facility - our party consisted of 3 adults and our great grandchildren (ages 7 &5) the total cost was £31.65 - we also thought the entrance fee of £10.95 per child is quite expensive. Fortunately we had lunch before we came but we did buy drinks which again were quite expensive - 1 latte 1 tea 1 can & 2 fruit shoots (Total £11)
We used to come with our four grandchildren a few years ago but as I say to charge for adults is a bit much. In the past when visiting it was always busy especially at the weekend but on Saturday when we arrived there wasn’t many people there. I can only assume that this is because of the prices.

Mixed experiences here from front reception staff and floor servers.
Upon arrival, it took 5 minutes to sign me in and whilst logging on the ladies on reception said the password out loud. They didn’t seem best pleased when I recited it back to them and suggested they replace it…
We spent 3 hours at the casino and either had to wait 30-40mins for a water whilst the reception staff were on their break or be asked twice in 5 mins. At one point, I watched reception in case anyone came in so the girl could make a glass or water for me.

Do not go there because if you forgot to enter your car number in the reception, you will receive a £100 fine, and if you go and ask for assistance, the manager will make excuses and refuse to help.

Some table games have been removed . However it's a pleasant atmosphere but staff are just going through the motions & seem either uninterested or capable of making your experience a nice one . Some years ago this venue was filled with the opposite personality & seemed more appealing . Maybe the management are not encouraging the best from staff as they themselves need a boost in customer service & attitude to there role in the entertainment industry .
