Kabira Bay, situated at the northwest corner of Ishigaki Island in Japan, is a stunning emerald blue bay with a pristine yellow-white beach and craggy islands dotting the waters. While swimming is not allowed, visitors can enjoy a glass-bottom boat tour to admire the beauty of the bay. The area is known for its fast-moving tides, so caution is advised when walking along the coast from bay to bay.
Kabira Bay is the best place of Ishigaki Island. It is a wonderful view of the blue clear sea, white sand beach.I love it!
For the parking lot you have to pay.

Selected as a three-star Michelin green guide based on convenience and charm, it is a scenic spot that you should definitely visit not only on Ishigaki Island but also on all over Japan.
Although it is a world-class beach, swimming is completely prohibited due to the fast and dangerous currents. No matter the season. So, Kabira Bay sightseeing is a glass boat. A glass-bottom boat is a boat where you can see coral and fish through the glass on the bottom of the boat. I chose from multiple operating companies and made an online reservation in advance. As you can see, incredible clarity. From the transparent seabed, you can see rare colorful coral reefs and colorful tropical fish. If I was impressed, the 30-minute tour would go by in the blink of an eye, and I didn't even have time to get seasick. It seems that you can see different expressions depending on the amount of sunlight and the ebb and flow of the tide.

You can enjoy the underwater scenery on a cruise ship.
You can make reservations in advance for the ship, and it operates on a short time frame.
The course is within 1 hour, and the cost is also reasonable.

I had high hopes for this scenic spot on Ishigaki Island, but unfortunately there were no people strolling along the coast due to the rain, strong winds, and cold weather that required down coats. The sea was also rippling due to the strong wind, and I could not see the beautiful scenery of the emerald green.

A beautiful beach, variety of colours of the water, crystal clear. Easy access, viewing point. The most touristic beach on the island, so you have boats everywhere. Still not overcrowded at that time (January). Barely shops and restaurants, prepare for that. Drinks are available, most people come by boat, we came by bike. Must see and worth it!

Stunning bay with nice azure colours. There are a few boats offering sightseeing tours of the bay, some of them with glass floor to see the fishes. No swimming or diving is allowed in the bay to help protect the corals and sea life (however there are quite a bit of litter on the beach). Still a must see place when visiting Ishigaki.

We arrived at 10:30am to plenty of parking. The bay was beautiful and due to the weather, it was mostly cloudy but the beaches were still pristine and waters were clear. There are two glassboat bottom boat tours (blue charges 1200 pp and orange charges 1050 pp; we picked blue without looking further). Food options are limited but ice cream options were plentiful. We were unable to find the Kabira Terrace trail and wish it was easier to find.

We really enjoyed visiting Kabira Bay. Friendly people who worked at the boat tour booth and at the cafeteria also. Gorgeous views from several locations, found a good place for ice cream at the Kabira cafeteria. Be sure to use the walking paths as they will allow for awesome views looking back towards the mountains in addition to over looking the bay with the boats. Photos taken April 2019.
Yonehara Beach, located on Ishigaki Island, is a stunning white sand beach surrounded by lush greenery and bathed by turquoise waters with vibrant coral reefs. It's known as one of the best snorkeling spots on the island, offering a chance to observe a diverse range of hard corals and tropical marine life including colorful fish, sea turtles, and manta rays. However, caution is advised due to rip currents and jellyfish in some areas.

Visited on October 22, 2023.
It was cloudy but the sun came out and it was warm, so there were quite a few people around this time of year.
The beach is shallow and very clear and very beautiful. There were quite a few people enjoying snorkeling, and you could see fish even within walking distance, so if you prepare well, you can enjoy snorkeling quite a bit.
There is a fee for parking, but it's 500 yen a day, and it's a really clean and wide beach, so I recommend it.
There was also a free shower, which was very helpful to remove the sand from my marine shoes.
I would like to enjoy snorkeling next time.

I only had time to choose 1 beach in Ishigaki and the research paid off. This beach is ideal for snorkeling. I have never seen coral this perfect, so close to the shore. You can wade out to your waist and be surrounded by loads of tropical fish. So much colour and life. I was in there for around 3 hours total in between breaks. The water was very warm, but I found the current strong, so be careful. The highlight was seeing a sea snake. I avoided the jellyfish thankfully. There is a surf shop there with all the gear but I had my own so not sure of the price. They sell cold drinks. I taxi'd from the main town in the South across the whole island to get to Yonehara. That was a beautiful drive. I got flashes of movies of Pacific battles in WWII. This island is as far South as Japan gets, so if you like the tropical feel, include this on your holiday

Awsome Beach! Was a bit worried about Jellyfish after reading reviews here but decided to still go. There is a parking place for about 500 yen for whole day and they also offer shower, toilet, some food/snack and even wetsuit rental. It is recommended to have shoes and rushguard or maybe at least a shirt for some protection but if you forgot you can rent it at the shop. The water is crystal clear and you can see lots of fish and sealife. Even saw a squid and I have been just at around 1.40m deep water.
There are not so many people which is good and bad. Should be careful with current. Dont go too far out as noone can rescue. There is a camping place but do not use their toilet or shower as owner gets grumpy. You want to bring a bigger bag and have your things inside. As some other beaches around the area in late afternoon crows flock together and try to steal stuff when people are not close.
Else probably one of best beaches in Ishigaki.

The best beach for snorkelling. The fishes are immediately visible within few steps into the water. I believe we were during the low tide so most of the corals were almost near the surface of water making it difficult to snorkel over them. But there were variety of fishes and absolutely beautiful corals. The shower and changing room facilities were basic. Parking available for 500 yen whole day. Snorkelling gear, parasols and other items can be rented there. Definitely a must visit to experience the true ocean life of Ishigaki!

It is the natural beauty of Ishigaki Island and has a vast expanse of vistas, there are many spots where we can enjoy and observe nature on a large area that makes use of the mountains as it is It was difficult to walk thoroughly because it was so wide
Banna Park is located on a mountain foothills in Ishigaki.
Ishigaki is the second largest island of the Yeayama Islands in Okinawa. With up to 160 islands
Banna Park is divided into 5 zones:
1. Natural Forest Views: Paths, bridges, and stairs allow us to walk through Banna Parks' breathtaking nature, only on paved paths. Because if we walk off the path, there is a right to encounter a poisonous wild animal.
2. Passeo Forest, a grassy area where one can observe large butterflies. There are many in this park. In fact, we don't have to walk far to that area but at the entrance. We found a butterfly as big as a palm. And many wild birds
3.The horizon leads us to walk around the summit with a number of landmarks including the Oval Bird Observatory.
4. The Stone Monument Forest: The area surrounding Banna Park, where many stone monuments are on display.
5. Children's Square: The area of Banna Park includes the BMX track and adventure playground surrounded by the beautiful nature of Okinawa.

Fair warning it's not very sandy except at low tide. At high tide it's really shelly/rocky and you've gotta watch out for coral and larger hermit crabs. But at low tide you can walk out pretty far and find some starfish, crabs, and small fish swimming around!

I went there twice on July 6, 2017. When I first drove up, the sky was cloudy. My photos were not that colourful.

OMG! What an amazing experience this was!
Our cruise ship docked in Ishigaki for the day and we took a taxi here from the ferry terminal. While the Village was interesting and peaceful, the real highlight were the monkeys! They are in a habitat in the middle of the village and are happy and energetic and very keen to hang out on your arms and shoulders. After enjoying the mangroves, spotting the water buffalo, hawk and checking out the lookout the front desk kindly called us a taxi back.
We are crew on a cruise ship and have been on board travelling the world for 6 months now, and this is in our top 3 experiences during our contract, thank you!!

Such a good experience- cute cute moment for us. We rode bikes to the village area from the main city center, and if you are decently active its not a bad journey seeing all the nature on the way.
But when we got there we did not expect the like really manicured look of everything, the monkeys are definitely what people go for and I understand that a lot because they are adorable and not seemingly dangerous if not bothered. As well as it being a wildlife enclosure that doesn’t smell completely like a zoo, they definitely maintain the facilities with care and attention to detail with the historical architecture.
My favorite moment was the traditional performance that happened at 3:30pm for us, the sweet lady who got our tickets out front did some amazing tricks while singing and dancing(and a very special party trick) along with a instrumentalist accompanying her all while entertaining the young kids there(I don’t speak Japanese but the nuance of giggles and clapping enhanced the not complete understanding, hearing kids shout out and laugh just kind of makes you feel at home in the moment for me personally).
Overall super great experience, really well priced I would honestly say they should raise the price but that’s just me.

The monkeys are in a separate, gated area, so you do not have to visit them if you do not want to. There is an area to leave your bags before you enter the gated area.
The monkeys were much smaller than I expected and not aggressive at all. Seems completely safe for small children and there were many there when we visited.

This was one of the highlights of our trip to Ishigaki, particularly because of the monkeys. They are incredibly cute and friendly and curiously explore your pockets with their tiny fingers, so you will be warned before entering the enclosure! We could happily just watch the monkeys for hours!
There are also traditional Okinawa houses to explore. We had a musical performance by “grandma and grandpa” playing and singing traditional songs. Their personality charmed everyone, and I really enjoyed the experience, despite not speaking any Japanese!
You can also paint your own Shisa statue or take photos dressed in traditional Okinawa clothes in the gift shop.
An essential visit for kids and kids at heart. 😊

I initially thought this might be touristic like the ones on mainland Okinawa that are half theme parks but this was great. It was truly about learning about the life and culture of the people of Yaeyama islands. The squirrel monkey- which I also feared might be caged and bad- are adorable and free in their area, jumping around and interacting when people feed them. I’d deem this a must visit to understand the place you’re visiting.

Absolutely amazing old village with monkey park! Highly recommended! Visitors without the car: bus comes just few times a day so you might get stuck and need a taxi to ride back to hotel. No buses between 2.15 pm and 5.33 pm.. taxi will cost aprx 2600 yen..

Good place to see some old houses. Highlight for us are the monkeys. You feed them for a small fee.
Glenn Angelo Galano — Google review
I really loved my time here until I saw that the water buffalo had a rope attached from the ground to its mouth. It was laying down and the rope looked tight so I’m not even sure if it was able to stand up. I’m assuming it’s to keep it from escaping the enclosure but surely there are better ways to do that.
Maria Serpico — Google review
So much fun! This is great family place, you can walk around for few hours, exploring the mangroves and most importantly, have fun with the monkeys.
The monkey area is just amazing. The monkeys are cute and playful and will come to you. Just adorable. We didn’t want to leave.
Ishigaki Stalactite Cave is a massive natural cavern on Ishigaki-jima, offering a mesmerizing display of stalactites illuminated with playful lighting. The island is easily accessible from major cities in Japan, making it an ideal escape to immerse in preserved nature. Accommodation options range from luxurious resorts with sea views to traditional Japanese apartments and inns for a more authentic experience.
Authentic sightseeing spot where close to town center. Worthy to go.
Pretty long path must entertain you. Some place have really high vibe.

Cool tourist spot located in the middle of the city. Has the regular stones, lights in a cave fixtures. While visiting there was a group of kids (maybe high schoolers) doing a school trip. They seemed to be interested in one of the sculptures. One of the chaperones was a female and she walked the entire path in heels! If she can walk in 4 inch heels you can as well. At the end there is a gift shop to purchase food and souvenirs. You can also paint some figurines prior to departing.
Franki King — Google review
Quite expensive (¥1200 per person) but a beautiful natural phenomenon so worth it. However, typical of other tourist attractions in Japan, they don't make it easy for non Japanese tourists to find. Firstly, all of the signage is in kanji/hiragana etc and the road leading to the caves is shared with a scrap metal yard (see pics below). So it's not very tourist friendly at all which is a shame. Also, like other places in Japan, the ownership love an unnecessary loud speaker
Jagon Chichon — Google review
Beautiful cave. Well-managed, with a photographer inside to take photos with the cave and with your loved ones. Price is good as well, 1,200 yen for adults and 600 yen for kids. When you come out of the cave there is also an ice cream parlour and a souvenir shop. If you’re visiting ishigaki jima you have to visit!
Juni Patoonie — Google review
This is an absolute gem! You really feel that the stalactites are still alive.
As for getting to the location a car/bike is recommended. From Ishigaki port, it's a 40-minutes walk.
Euglena Mall is a charming shopping destination located near the Ishigaki cruise port in Okinawa Prefecture. It offers a variety of traditional restaurants, souvenir shops, and stores selling hand-crafted Japanese jewelry, accessories, textiles, and t-shirts. Visitors can also purchase authentic Okinawan liquor known as Awaramori-ya. The mall's proximity to city attractions like the Public Market and 730 Intersection makes it an ideal stop for tourists.
This area is a shopping area in Ishigaki City, Okinawa Prefecture. Shops and places to eat line the streets, including souvenir shops, restaurants, clothing stores and more. This place is more similar to a public market but is well managed, neat and clean. The prices offered are quite moderate, not expensive and not cheap either.

We had a fun time here today. The shops and people watching were great
The salted donuts were wonderful, and the Mrs picked up some gifts.
I can not get over how clean the entire place was. Everyone was very friendly!

In April of 2019, we enjoyed walking around and checking out different shops that are located in Euglena Mall. The people that worked there were very friendly and would talk to you without being pushy to buy something. That's how you can meet some of the locals and learn about them and Ishigaki island.

Not a shopping mall, but a small shopping street where we can get souvenirs at reasonable price.

Not that big, there are some really long waits and sometimes crowded. Despite all that, it's a great place and lots of options to choose from!

Relative to other euglena mall in japan, this one is short with less shops. Yet you may find it is the best place to stay when it is rainy.

Great, covered shopping arcade with a good mix of gift shops, local cafes and restaurants. There's no parking here, park at the ferry terminal instead, it's an easy 10 minute flat walk between the two.
Shiraho Beach is a serene and picturesque destination offering glass-bottom boat trips, snorkeling, and diving opportunities to explore its extensive blue coral reefs. It is known for its well-tended and supervised environment, making it ideal for families with young children. The beach boasts over 120 varieties of corals, including the impressive stone coral, the largest in the northern hemisphere. While not suitable for swimming due to its wild nature and large stones, it offers a unique setting for photography enthusiasts.
The beach has a beautiful stretch of sand, but its main draw is the collection of coral. The area is home to more than 70 kinds of corals, including a large community of blue corals said to be the oldest and largest in the northern hemisphere.

A very quiet breach near a residential area. It has a lot of coral and perfect for a stroll along the beach. Picturesque and beautiful, we stayed here for an hour before our flight as it was close to the airport. The kids were very happy to look at the collection of coral and shells on the beach. There are four very small parking spaces and it fills up quickly, but the beach is relatively quiet.

Beautiful beach and close to city centre. It’s not a sanely beach so not the most ideal to have long walk or lie there.
Blue Cave is a popular destination for tourists due to its limestone sea cave that features luminescent water, perfect for snorkeling and diving. Land access to the cave is only possible during low tide and visitors are advised not to follow Google maps but instead take the left road which leads to a small beach. From there, visitors can walk through knee-deep water towards the Blue Cave.
Ishigaki Shiritsu Yaeyama Museum, established in 1972, showcases the history and culture of the Yaeyama Islands. The museum features a diverse collection of local crafts, including traditional boats, festival shiisa masks, textiles, and scale models of traditional architecture. Visitors can also explore archeological finds and historic documents. Additionally, seasonal exhibitions are held throughout the year.
Super interesting museum! I went on a rainy day, and it was pretty chilly inside. There’s lots to see in the museum for how small it looks!! The exhibits themselves all have Japanese labels, but there are little stands situated around the museum with English and Chinese booklets explaining the exact same things. For 200 yen, definitely worth the 1-1.5 hours I spent there!

Really lovely, small museum of the history of the Yaeyama people and culture. There is a very detailed English guide booklet that you can borrow at the front, otherwise it is sprinkled around b small stands throughout. ¥200 entry fee; cash only. Worth an hour or more if you love history!
Carah Kucharski — Google review
It is a small, low key museum with some interesting items (like water kettle made from a big sea shell). I can sense that the museum is more for locals to connect to their roots than to entertain foreign tourists. You probably only need 30 min to go through all.
Miho Sjoquist — Google review
Mostly a collection of objects from the ancient era, with a few simple displays about local customs, practices etc. There was a booklet with English translations that had one or two interesting titbits but the museum was organized in a pretty haphazard manner overall. Can skip it unless you have time to kill.
Sunday Mass starts at 9.00 AM. This Catholic church of Ishigaki also provides Mass order books in English and Filipino alongside Japanese and Romanized Japanese. It's convenient. The pastor and sister are very kind and they can speak English as well. Sometimes the pastor gives a homily in English as well. People in this church are very warm to each other.
Yonehara Palm Grove is a breathtaking palm forest showcasing a variety of palm trees, including the revered Yaeyama Palm, a national natural monument in Japan. Visitors can engage in activities like jogging, brisk walking, or leisurely strolls along well-maintained trails that meander through the grove. The picturesque promenade offers an approximately 10-minute walk and showcases Maibara's Yaeyama palm.
Short walk, very quiet on may weekend. Part of the trail is closed, but still worthy

So it looks like there used to be a much longer walk but the jungle has reclaimed a lot of the trail with no explanation as to why. But it is still a beautiful spot and the trailhead had a lot of different ice cream and fruit smoothie shops set up there. So maybe a good spot to start the day or refuel so to speak. The current trail maybe takes about 10 minutes there and back, and is beautiful, if short.

A worthwhile quick stop. The walking trails seem to have once been more extensive, but you're now restricted to a fairly short stroll. Still, cool to see the endemic palm trees. There's a fruit drink stand and the entrance, but with the amount of drinks using fruits not in season now, I was a bit leary. I guess you gotta give the people what they want though.

Free to enter for public. The Yaeyama Palm Grove is a short walking path for visitors to look at the unique palm tree spieces on the island. Good for nature lover. There are cafes outside for visitors to sit down and rest.
Arakawa Falls is a charming little waterfall located just off the main road, with a small parking lot that can accommodate a few cars. To reach the falls, visitors can take a short walk back towards the Kabira direction after crossing a bridge until they find a staircase leading down on the left. The surrounding area offers opportunities for stream-trekking and hiking, with rugged streams and lush tree ferns creating an immersive jungle experience.
Definitely worth a quick stop... Very quiet, very beautiful

This is a superb little waterfall just off the road. There’s a parking lot off to the side, and you’ll want to walk back across the bridge to find the path down, or try the hard way next to the parking lot :). Looks like you could hike up the river a good ways if you had a mind to. Beautiful place to stop and relax, a fair amount of mozzies though so be aware.

Is lunch time the recommended time?
In the morning, the Pacific Ocean side is backlit, and in the afternoon, the Sea of Japan side is backlit, so it seems difficult to determine the time when the ocean can be seen clearly in all directions.
The road is covered in red clay and can be very slippery when it rains. It's not an easy path as you have to put your feet between tree roots and the slope is relatively steep so you have to take long strides.
We recommend pants that you don't mind getting dirty and shoes that are not sandals.
The climb takes about 20 minutes.
Even if you take your time and climb slowly, it's still a short hike compared to regular trekking, and a spectacular view awaits you at the top of the mountain, so don't just take in the ocean, but also the stone-walled mountain.

Ishigaki Island's Ibaruma Sabichi Cave is a unique natural wonder that offers an intriguing experience for visitors. This limestone cave, estimated to have formed around 370,000 years ago during the island's geological transformation, stands out as the only one in Japan that leads directly to the sea. As you venture through its mysterious passages, you'll be captivated by the stunning emerald green waters that greet you at the exit.
The cave itself is nothing to write home about.
However, once you are through the cave you enter onto 2 very lovely areas. One is a mini beach where you can swim and relax. The other a lovely arched entry to the ocean.
They have an auto ticket machine so you just need cash.
There is parking, toilets and a little gift shop in case you forget sandles.
I highly reccomend making your way there.

This was a really cool spot to go to, and is worth at least a couple hours. First, the fee is ¥1250, and you have to pay cash, and there’s no ATM, so be warned. But the cave itself is pretty cool if not so large, and it leads out to two different kinds of beaches. Both looked great for snorkeling, but I wasn’t prepared and didn’t go for that. The left beach gives a great view of the island, and the right beach is mostly popular with Japanese as a “power spot,” or a location with a lot of magical power or mana, but if you keep walking you’ll find beautiful beach after beautiful beach.
Caleb Stober — Google review
Cave and hidden secret beach experience. Unexpectedly interesting. Only japanese yellow signs by the main road but quite easy to find. Entry fee is a bit steep (1250 jpy for adults), but worth it - gives you access to a large underground stalagtite cave system that leads to the beach on the other end of the mountain! There you will find amazing little spots to enjoy the beach and explore the cost that is not accessible from anywhere else.

Easy walk through the caves which also look to be useful for お酒 storage. The ¥1250 entrance fee gets you access to a secluded sea spot for snorkeling on the right and a lovely beach in a calm shallow bay on the left.
