The Yorkshire Sculpture Park is an impressive art gallery that showcases the work of many legendary sculptors. The park is located in a beautiful setting and is perfect for days out.
We spent a lovely morning in the sunshine today walking around the park, galleries and the shops. Finished off with a nice coffee at the Weston where our car was parked. Excellent value for money. Spent £6.00 each which was well worth it for a morning. You could easily spend all day here and bring a picnic. We'll be back soon.

Fantastic day out for the whole family and dogs. Spacious, beautiful fields, hills, pathways, woodlands, meadows. Sculptures very interesting and it's so exciting to walk and almost Hunt to discover another one. Cafes, shops, galleries, toilets on side. Staff extremely helpful. Entrance £6 parking included.
Stunning views. Highly recommended attraction, very close from M1.

Wonderful place. I heard that they had some new sculptures for people who have visited it long time ago.
Nice place for a pictures with sculpture and a woodland walk. Actually some good and some funny sculptures, very modern and some of them are mixed style, reminds very known sculptures but has a drop of modern in it.
It is an enormous place I actually didn't expect it to be so big, if you need a walk and don't want to travel far away in the hills it's perfect. Map is bit confusing with all entrances in the footpaths. Not all paths are allowed for dogs.
Can enjoy some drinks and ice-cream in a cafe and ice-cream and snacks for dogs!
The price of the tickets was a surprise for my friend as he said it didn't show you have to pay for it online. But it was definitely worth it!
Nice walk there are some bird peeking stations and sheep around on free land. I wouldn't put white shoes if I would know but that was surprise for me 😁😁

What a wonderful place on a lovely day. Didn't manage to get round it all as I was shattered after a 5k walk. (I have the cardiac capacity of an overweight cat !). Tea rooms were well stocked and the balcony was a lovely spot for a well deserved cuppa afterwards.

Great place to spend a sunny day. Good for families, with lots of sculptures nearer to the entrance or not too far to walk but then there's also lots of land and a good circular path to walk if you want to go a bit further. It's easy to spend all day here. Bring some drinks and food with you though, the cafe prices are quite inflated.

Brilliant, best experienced on a nice sunny day like we had today. If you want to experience the whole park you will need to spend the whole day and walk some considerable distance. I was there for over 3 hours and felt like I had only scratched the surface. Be aware that you have to buy your tickets beforehand but having said that we bought ours 1.5 miles from the park.

Fantastic place, lovely walks in the grounds. Sculptures have changed since we last visited, 2 years ago, so nice to find lots of new ones.
Great if you take your own sandwiches or picnic, you can stop anywhere. There are two cafes but very overpriced, a small pork pie was £4.25 🙄 which I think is a lot. Large coffee ( more like a regular) £4.
We've been lucky the weather has been great on days we've visited. Last week we walked about 9 miles in total around the grounds. Two lakes and scenery very picturesque.
You have to buy tickets online before entry, £9 adult, £6 concession, includes your car parking.
Would highly recommend a visit. 🥰😘 xxx

Fantastic day out, got here after around lunchtime but could easily have spent the whole day as we did not have enough time to explore site. Fantastic sculptures and beautiful gardens to explore, We loved it and our young son and niece had a ball too.

This is a Stunning place. I was there at lest 2 hours and still didn't get around it all It's a full day kind of visit in my eyes. Defiantly worth it. The beauty of the Sculptures are Gorgeous! Lovely walk around with a Coffee.

A great place to visit or meet up with family & friends. Lots to go round and see, with enough sculptures & park design features interesting enough to engage the kids. Dog friendly with a cafe & gift shop to boot.

This park is just amazing... it's a huge park with more than 80 pieces of all kinds of unique sculptures/statues. A lot of beautifully crafted, and created pieces of art! Each piece depicting their own unique visual designs, and a small portion of history about it. Total time needed to fully expore whole park is about 3hours straight. I could easily, and highly recommend this beautiful and unique park. Ticket prices is not that big only 6 pounds for one adult, but for sure worth it. It's good for families, and friends alike. So yeah my verdict is - 9/10.
Mantvydas ?. — Google review
It was a good day out and so many funky sculptures scattered around the park. You need to spend a whole day to explore all their sculptures and I think we only discovered 80% of them. Cafe has very nice food. The only complaint is their maps layout of the sculptures just a dot so we could only guess the names. If they number them it will helps.

Our experience was lovely. We went there with a few family and friends for dry picnic.
Place: I think the place is awesome. A lot of Greenery and beautiful sculpture . It is better to visit in summer as you can stay outside. I would recommend allocating spending 5-6 hours. There is a lake too. There is a entry fee so please check the website before you go. You would need to show your ticket at the entrance so have it handy.
Parking: There is enough parking space. There are 3 car parks and are quite nearby.
Restroom and cafe: there are restrooms and cafe for coffee and food.
Overall: It is a good place to visit especially in summer. Would recommend going here.

We’re impressed with the size of the park and the amount of incredible sculptures dotted around. Every corner had something to spot and this kept everyone with their eyes peeled. Amazing for picnics or simply a walk outside. Highly recommend

Gorgeous landscape, majestic sculptures, decent cafe & restaurant, excellent shop. All in all a good day out! Take wellies or walking boots and have a good romp around the grounds. It’s brilliant here. Food for your soul!

An excellent day out for all the family, you can walk and wander as much as you feel like over the extensive ground with art and installations around every corner. My personal favourite has always been the underground gallery as no matter what the weather or light conditions it's always like an indoor gallery outside 😁
Definitely would a visit if you like art or not as it's just lovely countryside either way

Love this park, and worth revisiting to see guest artists and changes to permanent ones. One of my wife's favourite locations and we especially appreciated the rentable scooters that can be booked in advance. I am disabled and my wife was very sick with cancer by that point, but the scooters let us visit the whole park.

The wife and I loved it. Great place to walk around and get fresh air....
We went with our children..... The 6 year old loved it, running around in the sun. The 12 yr old, walked and talked and the 14yr old walked around, telling me he was bored and kicking stones and throwing sticks...
It's a great place to wall around, turns out that a 14yr boy is bored as it's not mountain biking or his computer.
Would recommend for a family and for couples....

A great place for easy walks around the park with some amazing sculptures. They have a few cafes around the park for refreshments plus lots of places for picnics. The main visitors centre has lots of very nice jewellery, all handmade and quirky, not cheap but makes a nice present.

Was a lovely day out! Definitely would recommend, particularly for younger people as it’s free depending on your age. It was a great way to spend a day out (for free!). It is definitely long enough to take up several hours. Some parts were shut off due to the weather but that can’t be avoided! The sculptures themselves were alright (nothing all that special in my opinion but for the sculpture enthusiasts I’m sure it’s lovely). Overall, a great visit.

By far my best art experience. I'll definitely visit again. Very serene field experience beautiful sculpture works.
Pugneys Country Park is a beautiful country park with a sports centre, sailing, windsurfing and canoeing facilities. There is also a walking trail which makes it great for families and dog-owners.
Beautiful place to walk with family and pets, they have little trains for you to ride. Toilets,Cafe, Shop. There were 2 ice cream vans. They have brick built purpose barbacues. Parking is not big enough on nice sunny days. On your walk round there are exercise frames of different kinds for you to use, cute little sculptures. There are picnic areas and children's play area. Lovely for a stroll.

This place is an amazing place for kids. Lots of flies along the path. The views and walk around the pond were lovely. The swans were magnificent, the closest I've ever seen these gentle birds. Be aware of flies along the path, and keep an eye on young children near the swans, as they can be quite bold when approaching for food. Birdseed is available for purchase at the reception. Please don't feed them bread. The playground is a great place for the kids to play even though the sippline wasn't working. The train also seems to be out of service. There is pay and display parking by the cafe for those who need it.

This is a beautiful place a open wide lake with a children's play outside area.
It's a long walk so be prepared there is a old castle that can be seen from the park on a hill.
You can walk and gain access to the castle for free.
There is ample parking and there is a cafe that has indoor and outdoor seating.
Hot and cold food served also alcohol can be bought.
Disabled friendly.
Dog friendly.
The establishment is clean and tidy and the toilets are well maintained to a good standard.
Definitely a good place to take the family or for a brisk walk with your dog.
I highly recommend this place it is beautiful and should be explored.

I had mixed feelings on this park... we had a leisurely walk round, which was nice... and the kids had good fun on the playground... but I can't help but think it could have all been a little better.
I will try to explain... I guess the fact that there was a small amount of drizzle didn't help even though it was pretty warm in the afternoon. The miniature railway decided not to open due to the early weather situation. Car park, I felt should have been free or nominal amount. Cafe had long waits. Ice cream van was expensive (or at least far more expensive than I expected it to be). Toilet facilities were fairly small considering size of park. Then there was the doggy do do's... not sure why some owners fail to pick up after their dog but either way at least one of my children manage to run or walk in to it...
So all in all, I struggled to rate it high, but certainly not terrible (despite my experience!)

Really nice place for a walk around the lake. Well maintained and wide paths make this accessible for everyone. There is a small gauge railway for children. Also places where you can have a bbq.
There are small exercise areas, a large kids playground and a cafe. There is usually an ice cream van around as well.
Peaceful place even if it can be a little busy when the weather is nice.

A fantastic place for a leisurely dog walk! The views are beautiful and the path is well maintained! There’s a large car park which you pay £2.50 for 4 hours which is very good value! There’s a cafe serving a wide range of food and snacks, plus toilets by the reception. It’s great for dogs and there’s ply of bins along the lake path! There’s a playground and nature trail for kids to keep them interested! Plus a light railway too!

Lovely leisurely walk around well maintained paths. Plenty going on even for spring, and just gets better over the year. Took more photos with my main camera - these are just off of my mobile. Good view of Sandal castle too from the lake.
Julie Dickinson (JuJu61) — Google review
Excellent clean park with good scenery (has 2 lakes) with plenty of parking and plenty of space for walking, cycling, walking the dog, barbecuing, playing sport etc.
They also have a mini railway that you can ride on the train. Price is £2 per person which is a good price. The ride lasts for like 10-15 minutes.
Only negative is the building which houses the cafe and the toilets, shower facilities and changing facilities closes at 4pm with the park closing at 9pm. So if you need the toilet just after closing and if you've only been there for a short time then your stuck.
Also parking isn't free but I suppose they need the extra money to maintain the park. But parking is cheap.
Unkown — Google review
Really dirty place. All bins were overflowing. Piles of rubbish dumped in various places. Litter floating in the water.
Dead bird in the water.
Signage up for algae issue and bird flu detected.
Loads of people having disposable BBQ's scorching the grass.
Parking rules are not clear. You have to pay by phone as all machines are out of use but signage is not sufficient to tell you this.
Such a shame as this could be a lovely place if people took their litter home when the bins are full.

Just off the M1 this is a hidden gem. Today the elements were against us, extremely muddy underfoot and windy but this didn't deter from enjoying a walk round the lake followed by a sausage sandwich and coffee at the Boathouse Cafe.
There is plenty of parking. Payment for parking at the machines (make sure you have change) or use the flowbird app on your mobile. The park itself offers a variety of walks and don't forget to check out the nature reserve. There is a pirate themed enclosed park for the littlies and various activities, zip wire, balance beams etc for children of all ages to enjoy when walking round the lake. Take a ride on the little Pugney train. Refreshments are available at the Boathouse Cafe serving hot and cold food/drinks. Toilet facilities are located in the main building.

We came to this country park on the 30th of March 2024. I must say this was a beautiful day out and I really enjoyed it despite the fact it was quite muddy. It was extremely accessible for everybody and was not very rugged or difficult to get around. I am registered blind and therefore I was being guided round and I found it a very easy walk indeed, I highly recommend this for anybody who has a disability no matter what their disability they will love it here. It’s absolutely well designed and the picnic area is very well designed as well. Urge everybody to come to this and enjoy a beautiful walk we did the walk in approximately one hour at a very steady pace, definitely bring a picnic because it’s well worth spending some excellent family time out in the lovely countryside and the fresh air at this beautiful country park

Lovely place for a dog/child/cycle/walk round. Good size car park, cash or card depends on machine you walk to, also Ringo app. Watch/feed the birds, play on play equipment or just walk round having a short train ride (to pay) back to cafe and car park. Toilets, icecream van. Can walk to sandal Castle beware of trolleys in the stream, good bridge to crossover. Sometimes has blue algae so check before dogs go swimming in the main lake. There's a wooded area and a field, also bird hides to watch them on the top lake - dogs on lead around here.

Large car park, Pay and display, but free for Blue card holders
Large park area popular for all families
Large play area for children, good range of activities, cafe on site, suitable for all.
Good for walking and exercise, dog walkers, but be aware the Lake suffers from blue algae so try to keep out.

Lovely clean, well maintained parkland around a large lake. Plenty of activities to keep the children entertained while walking round the lake. Nice cafe with snacks, cakes and lunch items. Toilets. Large car park but soon filled and was full by 11.30am in school holidays. Great day out, topped off by ice cream from the van in the car park (Roy's, lovely ice cream but £7.20 for 2x 99's!!).

The Hepworth Wakefield is a massive and innovative art gallery with six exhibition rooms, a shop and a cafe. The gallery is part of the Yorkshire Sculpture Triangle and features the work of some of the world's greatest contemporary artists. It is also an amazing place to visit, with free entry.
A really great experience all round. We travelled from Herefordshire to visit. Blown away by the architecture, inside out. Wonderful exhibition spaces with great light, space and captured views. Fabulous exhibits to inspire, great garden's beautifully planted. Fabulous friendly staff. Great cafe with delicious food. Absolutely brilliant, a iced gem on the fabulous cake that is Yorkshire!

Visited on a Saturday & Sunday and no special event so free entry (if Wakefield resident with ID proof), but donations accepted. Lots of adults and families. Disabled parking by Gallery, payable parking for anyone else across the road or nearby. Children's themed crafts downstairs which are great for little ones to get involved. Various pictures and sculptures upstairs for featured exhibits. Cafe on site offering drinks, snack and light lunches until 3pm, toilets near main entrance too. Great to learn more about some local artists too. Closed every Monday.

This is a very well run gallery of modern art and especially sculptures. Barbara Hepworth and Henry Moore feature, but there are many other contributors. I toured the 10 galleries and was impressed. Then I went into the garden and admired the planting. Some very interesting plants (I wish they were labelled). Afterwards, inspired by one of the paintings in the gallery, I visited the Bridge Chapel. This was open and very interesting to visit. Still in use for worship and looked after by a volunteer organisation.

Absolutely amazing place, with friendly staff and great activities! We visited today on a whim thinking it wouldn't be all that, but I was very wrong! We visited the gardens when the kids made dens and drew pictures of flowers, and then went inside where we all used our drawings to inspire bigger art pieces. Free for Wakefield residents, and £12 if you live elsewhere (well worth it!!)
Has a cafe and a nice gift shop, and you can even eat your own picnic food on site (not inside the cafe, there is a separate area!)
Please note!!!!!!- There are a few very graphic sculptures and pictures in the gallery upstairs that shows in detail where babies come from. If you haven't yet had this conversation with your children, avoid at all costs this area. They WILL know how childbirth works after this exhibit.

Such a lovely place to come on a Sunday with my 3 year old - she loves exploring the gallery and then doing a craft. We go frequently and never get bored. Even better that it's free for us as we're Wakefield residents!

I've been meaning to go to the Hepworth gallery for a long time now, and it did not disappoint at all.
The moment you see the building from across the bridge you walk across to get to it, you.know it's going to be special. I was greeted by great staff members who introduced us to the different parts of the exhibition's. The food and drink in the cafe is slightly expensive but the quality of it is great, so it's pretty worth it.
The layout of the gallery means you can walk through a range of different rooms in a circle and arrive back where you entered once you've viewed everything. There were some great works inside, including a brilliant photo exhibition from Hannah Starkey that did not fail to disappoint.
Parking across the bridge from the gallery is £5 all day and there is a good amount of spaces.

The Theatre Royal Wakefield is a grand Victorian auditorium that showcases a diverse range of performances such as drama, dance, comedy and music. Built in 1894 by the renowned architect Frank Matchum, this traditional theatre is an outstanding example of his work. It attracts both local and international talent which has made it popular among families, especially during the Christmas Pantomine.
Not been to Panto for a long time but after seeing this performance on Christmas Eve will definitely return again.
We all had a great time, especially our daughter. Beauty and the Beast was very well made, with great performances from the entire cast - the production managed to squeeze in one or two musical numbers 'Les Miserables', which were excellent.
The funniest parts of the show were improvised, with voluntary (and involuntary) participation from the crowd. I've seen shows on Broadway and this was so much better!

A well preserved local theatre. The stage and seating was excellent with great views of the performance of Bouncers. The upper circle bar was a great place for a beer before the show. You can even place your order for half time to dodge the queue. The beer is also reasonably priced at under £6 a pint. The actual show was brilliant, the 4 chaps took us back to the 1980’s with lots of dark but hard hitting humour.
Finally a big thanks to the ushers, most are volunteers, they were very few and helpful.

Been to a couple of shows here. A little scruffy but it definitely adds to the character of the theatre. Very polite staff, fairly priced bar with a decent selection of hot and cold snacks. There is 1 toilet on the lower stalls area which didn’t smell very nice and was very busy.Parking is a bit of an issue, a car park is about a couple of minutes walk away but the meter only takes cash so make sure you have a pocket full of change.

Brilliant evening seeing a Tom Jones tribute act. Small but very ornate theatre. Lots of steep steps to Upper circle, toilets and bar.

Really friendly service at the bars, both downstairs & upstairs.
Had a great view of the dance show from the stalls, and thoroughly enjoyed the show.
Only downfall: at the interval, all the smokers rush out to just outside the doors, and the theatre fills up with the stench of smoke! It absolutely stunk.
But that's not the theatres fault. Just a shame it happens 😷

Lovely little theatre in the centre of Wakefield.
Lots of local car parks making life easy to get here, it's also a stone's throw from the train station and local bus routes.
The show we watched was good, my only complaint is that the seats were quite small for me, but I did put weight on over lockdown so I can't fault the theatre for not accommodating my new enlarged size 😅

Great Neil Diamond tribute act. Backing band where excellent. Down side how the staff allowed the staggering drunk young lady in the venue sat in front of me seat B1 beggars belief. Went to see a comfortable showing of sleeping beauty. The cast were amazing, the seats were comfortable the evening was just pure bliss.
My only issue was, it was supposed to be a comfortable showing and I felt more could have been done to help those with additional needs. Not just point parents to the nearest safe room for there child to re-regulate.

We went to see the panto, sleeping beauty. Whilst the theatre is not as big as some of the main ones, our family had a brilliant time. Anglers Country Park is a beautiful location for a family stroll, offering a scenic path that encircles the lake for about 2 miles. It's wheelchair and pushchair accessible, making it suitable for everyone. Kids will be thrilled to discover the Room on the Broom trail along the way, while bird enthusiasts can enjoy observing wildlife from various bird hides. The visitor center near the car park provides convenient amenities such as a small cafe, restrooms, an information center, and a shop.
Great place for a walk and people watch and watch the ducks and other birds. Nice quiet place and look out for the wood sculptures on your way round. And don’t forget to visit the cafe nice food and drinks and not to forget the ice cream. Great place for dogs as well. Large car park as well.

Fun and education, nature and nourishment. A delightful place to spend a few sunny hours.
Nature trails, statues, feeding the water fowl birds, and an adventure playground can keep you busy outside.
Activities, exhibitions, and a cafe, can help you to pass your time indoors.
The staff are helpful.
The toilets were spotless.
There is a charge for the car park.

What a hidden gem!!! We did the room on the broom trail, which my son loved. He did most of the 2 mile walk, as he was focussed on finding the characters. One of the statues had fallen over, so hopefully this was just temporary!
Be aware there are no toilets or eateries once you leave the main buildings, so make sure you take snacks with you, and try little people before you set off for a wee!
Amazingly peaceful despite being busy, and there was so much wildlife to see, as well the trail.
Trail bags are £2 from visitor centre- with map, colouring sheets and activities in it. But worth it for the little ones.
Highly recommend for a cheap day out

**Anglers Country Park** - ★★★★☆
Tucked away from the hustle and bustle of the city, Anglers Country Park is a delightful haven for both visitors and local residents. As you meander through the various trails, the tranquillity of the area invites you to immerse yourself in its beauty and serenity.
The park's pièce de résistance has to be the picturesque lake, a paradise for anglers and an idyllic spot for those wanting to enjoy the scenic views. While the wildlife abounds, the ducks swimming on the lake add an extra charm.
What sets Anglers Country Park apart from many of its kind, is the thoughtful presence of a café. This spot turned out to be a treasure trove with its offerings of delightful coffee and scrumptious ice cream that hit just the right spot after a nice walk. There seemed to be more on the menu that piqued my curiosity, promising more culinary adventures for future visits.
However, be prepared for the possibility of crowds during peak times, a small price to pay for such a gem. Despite this minor drawback, Anglers Country Park continues to be a local favorite, providing a much-needed respite from the everyday grind. Four out of five stars for this charming local retreat.

Super lake and countryside walks and trials available. Paths are flat but were very waterlogged and muddy in parts when we visited. There's a small pay carpark (which gets very busy at weekends, school and Bank Holidays apparently) There's a visitor centre, cafe and toilets. Pleasant stroll with the dog, we'll be back when the weather improves.

This is our favourite place to take our reactive rescue dog as arriving and leaving early on a weekend means you miss the peak times and can easily avoid other early walkers. Our dog loves to paddle in the lake and explore all the different scents, it is such a lovely and clean place to walk.

Gorgeous park... Gorgeous trails and lake, with a beautiful gift shop and quaint, simple, yet effective cafe. Strongly recommended for anyone, especially doggie parents!

Nice walk round the lake in a circular 2 miles , lots of ducks and geese and other water birds, nice touch with a few room on the broom figures, brilliant for riding bikes round, nice cafe at the entrance and lots of benches, with a little park, nice few hours out .
Cathy Selsby — Google review
Fantastic place with sculptures from the book "Room on the Broom". The kids have great fun every time. The upside is the playground which is the end goal of the walk around the lake. On site you can have a coffee, use the toilet, but I advise you to check the closing times in advance, as well as the prices for parking.

Beautiful quiet place to walk. It is a 2 mile flat circuit around the lake, which has quite a number of hides and pathways to the surrounding area. Parking charges between 8am-6pm.
Matt Bennett — Google review
Very nice and quiet place. About 2 miles, one round easy one hour walk. Visited on Wednesday about 11.45. Many people and new charges for car park
Piotr Daniel — Google review
Lovely place for a walk suitable for the whole family! The path around the lake is approximately 2 miles and is pushchair and wheelchair friendly. There is a Room on the Broom trail along the way which children will love. Also there are several bird hides to view the wildlife. There is a visitor centre near the car park with a small cafe for refreshments, toilet facilities, shop and information centre, plus a great children's playground. There are a few picnic benches but many people just take picnic blankets and sit down by the lake, especially on hot summer days. A great place to spend a few hours without spending a fortune!
The Wakefield Cathedral, also known as the Cathedral Church of All Saints in Wakefield, is an ancient and imposing landmark located at the heart of Wakefield. Its history dates back to the 9th-century and it was mentioned in the Doomsday Book of 1086. The cathedral has undergone various restorations over its long existence, with its current appearance owing much to Victorian influence after being restored and reopened in 1888.
Very welcoming, a lovely mix of old medieval stone building and carvings along with some beautiful modern craftsmanship, such as the cross-legged Madonna and amazing pulpit. Excellent cafe and shop next door.

Visited this evening for the Gaia event, absolutely amazing. Their was a long wait time earlier in the day but we turned up about 6ish on the Saturday evening and were straight in. There were a few families around but plenty of space. It’s an amazing event in a beautiful setting.
A plus being that the toilets are open so if you are big and pregnant like myself you can make the most of the free toilets 😂🌎

What an absolute stunning interior from the Rood Screen, to the ceilings, extensive stained glass and the tombs and monuments inside. I visited at around 8.20am, was surprised to see it open opening time was 8am and for people.lile me who want to marvel at the interior going that early is worth it a I had the Cathedral to my self. They also had a selection of guide books for sale which help to support the Cathedral.

This is a such a beautiful building with and amazing atmosphere. They have different events on throughout the year and the staff are always welcoming and friendly. They have a lovely little cafe, where the prices are reasonable and the food is delicious. Its perfect to sit and contemplate or say a prayer and you can also light a candle and ask for a prayer to be said in service which is so thoughtful.
I have been going as a kid and it's is so amazing at Christmas time.

Went to Wakefield cathedral to sign condolence book on the day of queen's funeral. The Queen had visited Wakefield cathedral on more than one occasion. I've grown up with this cathedral lived in Wakefield all my life my parents were married here. The cathedral is beautiful although I preferred it when it had the old pues and not free standing chairs. There's also a little cafe and shop

Fantastic cathedral. The ornate stone carved ceilings and two beautiful sets of organ pipes. The quiet sanctuary set inside a beautiful wooden carved area. Disabled access is fantastic. Thete is also a cafe with outdoor seating. Also good toilets facilities and numerous different events to see or take part in...
The ruined medieval castle, Sandal Castle overlooks the River Calder and is a great place to visit for its lovely views of Wakefield as well as its fascinating history. It is free to enter and offers fantastic opportunities for picnicking and dog-walking.
Wonderful historical place. And also great for walking/jogging.
Lovely views from top of the hills across Wakefield.
Enjoyable with friends and family. Parking is easy, and the footpaths are nice and level so great for anyone with mobility problems. Perhaps limitations would occur if wanting to get close to some of the ruins.

Really lovely castle ruins area, there is a few walks off in different directions a lookout area and some info boards so you can understand what you might have been looking at.
Within the grounds area there is a coffee shop and a small (free) car park.
Kids loved running up and down the hills and pretending to be knights!

Lovely little place. The castle itself was pretty, but I expected more. But it was still a nice place to visit. We went right to the top, and the view was beautiful. We parked at the car park, put our wellies, and walked.

Really nice little place, great for a nice saunter or a picnic. The history of the area is incredible and information boards are plentiful, although to get the full picture of the history I had to do a little googling. Parking was easy and free. Stunning views of the nearby reservoir but be prepared for a fair few steps! Most of the area is accessible on flat ground but some of the more interesting parts are up or down stairs

Been here several times, once during a frosty, sunny morning and the remains of the castle are very good.
Views from the tower are excellent and to be able to access the moat is a bit special, although the shrubbery needed trimming.
There are plenty of benches on the pathway around the perimeter so you could just sit and chill a while, otherwise the visit could be no more than 45 to 60 minutes.
Free parking. Visitor centre on site.
It is a pity that some idiots had left a shopping trolley and party litter around the motte.

It's free. Lovely views there, great for children to run around and let off steam. Too much over growth in parts! On doing a search we found "cafe on site" there was a building shuttered with a notice saying CLOSED FROM 31 AUGUST FOR ONE WEEK. The date? 29th. No toilets so visit was short.

Free hard standing car park for about 20 cars, little cafe that serves drinks and food
Good little stop off to visit the castle for a short walk around and it's free
Hard standing paths for walking and for most abilities, a couple of places involving steps to the platform showing good views of the castle ruins and the surrounding areas

Wow didn't know there was castle ruins in Wakefield...found this by mistake...so beautiful! Lovely little walk... Access is free. There's not much left of the castle but it has fantastic views of the surrounding countryside and is worth a visit just for that!
There are several information boards around the castle describing the history of the castle which is very interesting.
There is a cafe but it's only open Friday to Sunday which is a shame, I went on a Wednesday and there were lots of visitors. It's very popular with dog walkers.
There is a car park.

Wakefield Museum is a local history museum with interesting displays about the town of Wakefield. There is also an exhibition on Charles Waterton, which is well worth visiting. The cafe opposite the museum is great for a bite to eat and there is also a library upstairs.
Very small museum but a friendly staff and child friendly setup.
Don't expect to see too many artefacts, but it is a nice place for kids.
It is in the same building as library.

A hidden gem of a museum, my daughter loves dressing up and playing at kitchens, while I sit in a comfy arm chair and listen to wartime wireless.
A variety of displays about Wakefield, all interesting and well put together.
The current Charles Waterton exhibition is fantastic, narrated by famous names, including David Attenborough, with really detailed papercut displays of birds and trees, a must see.
Great cafe opposite and a decent library upstairs.

This is a fascinating museum, having displays such as animals, ornaments and tools in its spacious area! It is also well-organized, placing artifacts from specific time periods in the same glass boxes. Navigation in the museum is able to be done with ease since there are signs for all the floors, which you are able to go in lifts to. The staircase itself is massive, serving the clean museum well alongside its lifts!

Thornes Park is a vast expanse of greenery spanning over 148 acres, located within the city. The park boasts various recreational facilities such as an athletics stadium, a lake, a playground and even a skate park for adrenaline junkies. Nature enthusiasts can take advantage of the 2-mile trail that meanders through the verdant expanses while admiring the flora and fauna. Visitors can also marvel at the bird house nearby and wander around near the duck pond.
It has many outdoor attractions. Found the animal grave yard which was cool. There's a little cafe where you can get hot food and a cuppa.

Where to start.
I went here with my partner and my daughter on Sunday afternoon and was blown away. There is so much to do and it is lovely to see how well maintained the facilities and grounds are.
We started by going on the kiddies steam train. My girl loved it and so did my pathner and I. I could have happily spent the whole day riding round on that train.
I have added some photos.
After the train, we walked over the other side to the duck pond. This was also a lovely area. All of the birds were healthy and everyone was maintaining social distancing, even though the restrictions have been lifted. This was very reassuring.
We walked along the side of the water and came to some trees and flowers. The selection of greenery was breathtaking and my camera got a LOT of use. A cool selection of insects too.
As if that wasn't enough, we left this area and came to a tropical bird area. It had informative information about the birds. A couple of the doves were bald and this was a little upsetting but I suppose there is always a chance that they will fight and get stressed being in a cage.
Despite the bald doves, I have to say that I was happy to see how large the aviary was. There was a private area in the other side where the birds could go and get shade and there was plenty of food and water and toys to keep them occupied. All in all, a lovely addition to a beautiful park
After this, we walked down through the park to the kids play area. There was a skate park which was very busy and a kids park which was also packed. I can see why as there were lots of cool slides and climbing nets. It also had swings and even had a separate area for the under 6's.
It was well maintained and there was an ice cream van and a food truck too. We had a lovely time.
The only slight issue I had was the litter, but that is just life. Unfortunately. More bins could help with this.
Also. To add. There is a putting green. The suggestion I would make would be to maybe open it in the summer evenings. I would love it if my partner and I could go for a game of golf, just for fun, on a summers evening.
Anyway, to sum it up. We had an absolutely lovely time. We spent about 3 hours there and there was lots to see and do and we will be back on a regular basis.

Usually loved Thornes Park, it's a great place to spend time with the kids and take a walk. But unfortunately I am a little upset that the toilets are not open all the time. Today, after 30 minutes on the playground, we came home because my little one had to go to the toilet ... What a shame, especially since the weather is brilliant

Been coming here for years, the duck pond, the fields, the cafe, the bandstand, the bonfires and fireworks displays, the rose gardens and greenhouse, the tennis courts, the live music festivals, the sledging during winter, the kids playground (when I was a kid obviously) it really does have alot to offer.Unfortunately I didn't take many photos this visit.

Good little park that includes a duck pond, children's playground, skate park, small aviary, flower garden, cafe, bowling green, putting green and small golf area. Lots of geese near the duck pond. Usually I find geese can be quite aggressive. Not in this case though.

This is a lovely old walled garden and I never knew it was there ! I have walked in and around this park for years but this time I decided to take a little path to one of the other park gates and I was confronted with a beautiful display of flowers of all colours and a walled garden. There is a large greenhouse with a hot section for cactus ect and two other cool sections. It's a little gem hidden away and is a nice peaceful area to think and contemplate. There is a garden shop open during the week with lots of wonderful plants for sale

Great building, so beautiful inside!! I popped in when they were doing the indoor market and there were some great little stalls - the best ones being the kids stalls. Good kids clothes prices.
Explore With Son & Me — Google review
On Fridays the indoor market is hosted inside this building. There are ramps at both the entrance and the exit. To be Covid secure, a one way system is operating for customers visiting the stalls.
Arts and crafts, books, cards, toys, clothes and collectables were all on sale, plus a variety of jewellery, watches, button badges and hand turned wooden products.
The inside of the building looks grand and opulent. A taste of the decor and style from the turn of the 20th century. A large balcony, and velvet curtained stage, speak of concerts and performances in previous years. Outside the building is splendid and is made of beautifully coloured stone.
The Town Hall overlooks the outdoor Market place. Parking is available nearby.

Not at the town hall but at the market in front of the town hall. Nice little market with a reasonable selection of goods and pleasant stallholders. Plenty of places for a snack or a coffee.
The Chantry Chapel of St. Mary the Virgin in Wakefield is an ancient Grade listed building that dates back almost 700 years and is renowned for its beautiful stained windows and historical significance. As one of only four chapels of its kind still standing in the UK today, it forms a vital part of the structure of the Medieval bridge over River Calder.
This Chapel is cared for by volunteers and is well kept. It's an interesting place to visit with an informative video playing to explain the history. I am glad the Chapel is used for worship.
David Cockshoot — Google review
Curious little piece of history and an insight into how things were done in the era of the Platagenets.
Its a tiny space comprised of the Chapel and the crypt below. The roof was off limits sadly when the Chapel was open as part of the programme of Heritage events.
On street parking on the industrial estate is limited, there is a council car park 5 mins walk away, or the Bridge pub. It's probably the best place for refreshments and facilities close by.

A little gem packed with history, lots of information and a volunteer on hand to answer any questions. If you fancy the tight squeeze you can go look downstairs. Could just do with a bit more information when it is open. There is a few carpark spots on the North side of the bridge. Also a good place to watch wildlife in the river

Haw Park Wood is a beautiful woodland that can be enjoyed all year round. It offers numerous trails for both short and longer walks, with less traffic than its neighboring Anglers Park. The area is suitable for families, dogs, and cyclists, with plenty of picnic areas hidden within the woods. The pathway alongside the old Barnsley canal provides a picturesque view that changes with each season.
Had a ride over today for the second time, first time was over a year ago. Started at the southern washlands behind Eastmoor, over to the Walton nature reserve then to Haw park. Brilliant place and will be going over again next week. Pathways are nice to walk/ride, area was very clean and everyone was friendly. I then went on to Anglers park. Highly recommend to any one.

Absolutely beautiful all year round. Many paths, so you can pop in for a longer or shorter walk. A little hidden, so not that many visitors as in neighbouring Anglers Park. Great for a day off/family walk, dogs, cyclists. The path by old Barnsley canal is magically picturesque (will vary by the season). By far my favourite running route

Terrible they cram so many telly bingo games in that they have to race through the main session, my wife ordered fish and chips in the main interval and was second in line but the food didn't arrive until the interval was almost over. Hardly any staff working the main hall so no change available. For the machines.
Ian Heptinstall — Google review
First bingo experience, the staff were fantastic especially one women who's name I'm not sure of. May have been a manager not sure but she was very helpful given this was our first time at bingo.
Halls a bit dated but Id assume most bingo places are like this and to be fair the fast pace of bingo means you don't often get to take in much else anyway. Would go again!
Dave Kellett — Google review
This bingo is quite good, the seating and food are great but unfortunately some of the staff (especially at book sales) are very unwelcoming, miserable and clearly do not want to be there. I understand it's their place of work but to be in a customer facing role, you need to have some sort of emotion or personality! It's almost like we are a hindrance buying the books.
The staff that deliver food/drink are always friendly and helpful.
Book prices are reasonable and the place has ample parking

Customer service is so poor here.
The staff are unbelievably rude.
The only welcoming staff member we encountered was the lady at door.
The member of staff on the bar needs some serious training, she was unbelievably rude to myself and my friends and clearly hates her job.
The staff at book sales weren't much better.
As other reviewers have said, the 2 hour main session is a joke and you do only get about 45 minutes of playing time as they try to get you to play the game thats on your table throughout the numerous lengthy intervals.
Menu is very limited and poor.
Honestly if our customer service was that poor at work, we would be out of a job. The manager needs to imply some serious customer service training throughout.

I have been going to mecca wakefield for almost two years..I take a group of disabled adults they absolutely love bingo..we decided to stay and play lates one evening, one of our group members has learning difficulties.. his board froze at the beginning of his late session and was unable to continue and play he did not even play first line..I immediately approached a member of staff and told them about the situation we had and asked for a refund on the late session due to not being able to play with board freezing..Reply was?? you are still in play!! I can not refund you..this was so confusing for him he was not playing because he couldn't..his board wasn't working. I was so annoyed 😒... he didn't play, he couldn't play, and no fault of his..Anyway cut a long story short they fobbed him off with six free tickets on his next visit...wait for it...When you purchase a bundle..NO WAY!!This is discusting..why not just give him his refund £3 he did not get what he paid for ...Will definitely not be attending mecca again..!! Training definitely on customer service....very poor

Firstly I have to say the DWP would have a field day in here, the amount of disability cars in the car park everyday all day is beyond a joke these people are getting too much benefit money clearly, there is definitely some money laundering going on in the slots room, people who look like scruffy drug dealers stuff cash into the slots and playing 2/3 machines at once they look like they cant afford a Primark outfit so would like to know how they afford this, now I have been attending this bingo hall for months and I have played the full electronic max package every time, I have not had 1 win this cant be mathematically correct, it is the same people winning every time, from observation over this time I have now realised this place is an absolute fix, buy 6 or 60 tickets it will make no difference you WILL NOT WIN, you will be 1tg every game, the whole place is rigged to certain players, honestly don't fall into the trap save your money don't go here,
Also the atmosphere is rubbish same scruffy tramps all the time, the tables and seats are uncomfortable, the food is mediocre at best, the staff at book sales are rude and they will rudely shush like you are a child, As for the gameplay they waste so much time with the cash line games (which are a rip off) forcing you into the slots in the interval to waste more money, in the 2 hour session you get about 45 minutes of actual bingo time, rubbish night out waste of £100 +, after yet another losing high price night I finally binned my membership card I will not be returning to Mecca at all.

First and last time we go to mecca Wakefield, wow prices are a disgrace compared to other clubs, how can they advertise for half prices in January but charge full price? Thought all clubs would have been the same but obviously not.

We had a great time. Food was exceptionally good. We had a sharer and was very cheap. Bingo had some good prizes and if not too hard to follow

Since changing the menu the food prices having increased yet the portions have shrunk its disgusting..... The money we spend in here you would think they wouldn't be as tight with portions
The Happy Days Play Centre offers a range of activities for children, including a giant slide and a climbing tower. It's perfect for rainy days, when the kids can stay entertained without having to go outside.
Loved every minute, staff are lovely and friendly, very clean play area, food was lovely too, my daughter enjoyed been able to climb and play, I can’t wait to come back for another play session.
Thank you

Went here today with our grandson, but didn't stay as it was chaotic!
On entering there was a queue of people waiting to get in as there were no tables, so waiting for people to leave. The place was absolutely packed and I felt there was far too many children on the equipment for it to be safe, indeed I felt sure that there must be regulations that had been breached on maximum numbers, not to mention any common sense aspects, given that Covid is still around!
Another observation I made was that there was only two members of staff (very young girls I might add) and there was a large queue waiting to be served for drinks/food.
Also, adults are charged £1 each for entry on top of the entry charge for children ( which is not cheap!) Given that adults usually buy drinks and food whilst there, I find this a tad unreasonable.
Other soft play areas in the area all operate a booking system which limits numbers and makes for a much better and safer experience. This play centre, however seems to be a free for all, with a pack em in attitude.
We left and will not return.

Great play centre. I visited today with my 9 month old son who can crawl and stand up. It was £1 for me and £1 for him - the only downside being that they don’t accept card for under £5. The babies (under 2) play area was large with a few of play bits for babies but it’s more about it being a soft play area they can crawl, climb and stand without worry. My son really enjoyed it and I’ll definitely be back. The toilets are spotless, the place generally really clean. They have good priced food and coffee too.
Just wish you could pay for card under £5, and that the parking spaces outside were bigger. I was parked with two big 4x4s parked on either side of me and I had to drive my car out to be able to get my son into his car seat after our visit.

Thought it was expensive for what it is. Small soft play area and no extras for smaller children to explore. Lots of wasted play space.
Orded a cheese sandwich lunch box and it was the cheap American slices of cheese😲, a bag of crisps, a frube yogurt and a cheap packet biscuit for £4.50. You can get a better and healthier pack up options at lots of other play areas so was very disappointed - food options poor quality! Felt like there was no heating as was very cold.
Will not be returning and won’t be recommending.
Only positive I would say was that staff were polite and welcoming.

This was an average soft play. Alright if your local, but there are other ones not to far away that are superior to this one. Admission prices were fair for what they offered little ones. However there was a distinct lack of some fundamental aspects to any soft play. There was no ball pit even though there use to be one I think as there was a section that looked like it use to have balls in but it was completely empty. They did however have quite a few different stand aid type toys to encourage walking and standing in early walkers. And I found the food menu to be very expensive for the type of food being offered. A plain old toastie was £5.20! But there were some other options I considered to be not too badly priced like a bowl of chips for £2.00. And the children can eat for free after 3.00pm during term time, so definitely somewhere to go after school, just have to pay the admission fee. Overall I give it a solid average 5 out of 10.

Adults are charged to enter with kids. Secondly the service is very slow. They had no stock of any food. Took over an hour to bring 2 fish fingers and chips. Cutlery was dirty and the toilets were such a mess.

The girls were lovely people but didn't seem to really know how to run the place. I didn't get what I ordered for food, even after I asked if it was available (they said yes, but it wasn't available). Coffee took like half an hour to get to us, and they didn't have some other stuff available even though it was on the menu. The play area is decent but worn and one area looks like it used to have a ball pool with a blower in it but it's not there now. Very poor experience overall.

My son always loves it there. Clean comparing to a lot of children's soft play places in Wakefield. Friendly staff and plenty of parking.

£7 for one child under 2 year old it’s absolutely overpriced. It’s the worst play area I have ever visited. There is no place for small kids, well there is just a small bit with nothing much in it. Honestly wouldn’t be returning for that price! Was expecting a lot more for that amount! There are way better soft play areas around that are just under £3 per entrance and triple time the size with a better atmosphere and better conditions.

The worst most horrific soft play I've ever been to!! £8 to get in with a 1 year old and 2 adults. The whole place is covered in dust, all the soft play apparatus is taped up with duct tape, if it’s not taped it’s just ripped off so you can see all the stuffing of the blocks instead. Every corner you turn has dust and food crumbs. The toilets are VILE, covered in urine and broken seats. The baby changing is disgusting also, there is a changing matt on top of the pull down lid and it’s full of crumbs and brown blobs and god knows what else. There is a potty in there with wee just sat on the floor. No control or supervision of any children in there, they were climbing up the slides, jumping off the baby area nearly knocking us out. The worst soft place I’ve ever been to. I didn’t even want to give it 1 star. Avoid avoid avoid!! It should be reported and closed down!

Just had our first and last experience here, charged £8 for a quick run around some dirty ripped soft kids area that had no ball pit or anything remotely fun for my 22 month old, it's got the oddest atmosphere with no music or anything going on. Didn't like it, complete rip off and needs a full revamp before I ever return!

I was very disappointed. We rang earlier today and asked if we could bring 4 children and a few teens/adults for my nephew's birthday. They said yes it's fine, you don't need to book. We arrived at 16.10. as soon as we walked in we got told no hot drinks, no food. I understand about the food as it was getting closer to the time they shut at 17.30 but hot drinks...1hour and 20minutes left before they closed!!! I really could of had a hot drink as the place was sooo cold too. I had to keep my coat on the whole time. Then...it got to 17.05. They closed the toilets off without warning. The staff we wiping the table when we were still sat there. We felt like they wanted rid of us. We left at 17.20 as we didn't feel welcome and as soon as we left the building the doors were locked. It was raining and we had young children stood outside waiting for a taxi. We never had the opportunity to stand back inside as they had locked the door!!! They staff were in their car at 17.28 leaving. The customer service was appalling and I feel like the staff need retraining or sacking!!! So we spent around £45-50 for not even an hour of feeling like we wasnt wanted, feeling cold and no hot drinks or food to warm us!!! I certainly wouldn't recommend to anyone!!!

Staff hide in the back rather than actually working. Customers left at the gates, waiting for food and the place left a mess. 3 to 4 people all stood. Also over charge, so need to watch your money. Place is also freezing.

Absolutely loved it. Scared me shirtless. First time I have been. Will definitely be going again next year. Hopefully making it better.

Took kids aged 10 and 12 to hallowtween, was just right amount of scary. Drinks etc very expensive but the scare houses themselves were very good value and better than expected. It looks like a great night out for adults but there were no actors inside the scare houses for hallowtween. Would go back next year if they change the houses each year.

only just got round to doing a review from Halloween!
Second time we have visited, much improved second time around. Very fun and scary. Wish it was open all year round!

Absolutely brilliant again. Come here every year. More changes this year. The improvements are really good and bring atmosphere to the experience. Stayed for nearly 3 hours. Food, drinks and axe throwing. Entertainment on stage and chased with chainsaws. The actors are brilliant and there’s scares around every corner. Highly recommend it for an evening out.

Fun evening out! Fairly busy but the queue was moving at a steady pace. Would recommend bringing a waterproof jacket and also some shoes you don’t mind getting muddy! We booked for 8:00 and got into the attraction at 8:20.

Had such a big smile on my face at the end of it as it was such fun! It is clear to see that a lot of thought has been put into the event, but what I loved the most were the actors, they were energetic, interactive and had on great costumes! Highly recommend.

Well done to the actors for their commitment to the roles, I thought the effort put into the sets and environments were commendable. We were waiting a little while in the queue before entering, my criticism comes with lack of direction at times and quite hazardous in places. I realise this comes with the territory but could've done with some small lighting at least running along the floor to help. It took around an hour to get through it all if that.
Unsure whether this is worth the ticket price but it was a good laugh either way!
