Turku Castle, founded in 1280 at the mouth of the Aurajoki River, is Finland's largest fortress. It has undergone significant transformations from a simple island fortress to a Renaissance palace. The castle houses a historical museum that traces its history from medieval fort to renaissance palace. Visitors can explore two dungeons and lavish banqueting halls while learning about Turku's medieval past through models that showcase the castle's growth.
One of the most beautiful castles I have seen in Finland. Must visit. Excellent collection and presentation. Well maintained

Very interesting castle. The interior design is contemporary and the ticket price is okay for the size. Interesting insight into the Middle Ages of Finland. There were a few families with small children on site, so it was certainly well suited for children. I don't recommended buying tickets in advance, cause there weren't lots of visitors.

If you want to learn about Finland history, this castle is where you should begin. It is a total representation of happenings during time and you get the chance to see the change since medival time. Highly recommended place!

Although a little way out of central Turku, it is well worth the easy walk along the river or short bus ride to visit the castle, which can easily absorb half a day or more. It was badly damage in World War II, and it has been rebuilt with the minimum of conjectural reconstruction, and is a delightful labyrinth in which to immerse yourself for a few hours. The original castle is a bewildering journey of passageways and staircases (there is a really helpful room containing models of the castle through the centuries), with the lower part focussed on the medieval era and the upper part on the Renaissance period. The bailey, at the front, is part castle history and part museum of nineteenth-century Turku interiors. There’s a café/restaurant in the courtyard for sustenance, and helpful staff positioned strategically around the tourist route.

My wife and I spent 3 hours going through the castle a few years ago, and wanted to come again. This time we spent 4.5 hours. I truly enjoy this castle.

We visited here on a weekend. We arrived a bit last minute, and didn’t have enough time to see all of the castle. There weren’t many guests left. Us and two other groups.
Nevertheless, the castle is well preserved and I really liked the staff; Knowledgeable, polite and with a positive attitude.
I advise to definitely have at least 2 hours of time, so you can relax and enjoy the place in peace.
The tickets for adults are 12€, kids (7-15) 5€, under 7 are free. There’s also special family tickets etc, you can ask at the front desk. You may also use the museum card.
If you’re a wheelchair user or have trouble walking, some areas may be impossible for you to access, while others a bit hard. There seems to be an elevator, which you can use to get to some parts, so not completely inaccessible.

Beautiful large castle - probably the best i have seen - very well preserved and taken care of, with lots if expositions and information. I ran through it for about an hour, but if you want it proper take at least 2-3 hours. There are also guided tours. Definitely recommended!

It was an amazing place. You fall inlove with the history. As of this moment though, you need to have COVID pass as requirement and also ticket for the museum tours which apparently we did not rake since according to the hotel my covid pass is not accepted which I dont get since how could I possibly enter the country 😑😑 they are using THL so yez, if you guys have covid cert from Asia, like me, you might get problem which is tje worst

Great place to get to know about history of the castle and the city. Absolutely love its historic atmosphere and the detailed guidance on the signs. I could easily wandered around designed 'tours' without a guide person. The exhibitions were amazing with lots of items displayed along with interesting notes about them. Just 3-km walk along Aura river to get there from the Cathedral. Highly recommend!!! (Idk why but on the day I got there, there were many families with small kids running around 😂, so probably it can be a nice place for family too)

A wonderful castle, which is a must for every visitor to Turku!
A beautiful building that underwent a conservation process, and its spaces have become a living museum of extraordinary history. The museum includes dramatic exhibition spaces, and spaces with interactive displays for children who can be almost real knights🤺🤺, kings and queens👸🤴🏻 Throughout the year, there are unique activities, plays and workshops for children.
A place that the children want to return to again and again...
The complex has a cafe with a unique atmosphere. Hot and sweet chocolate was an excellent end to a winter visit to the castle...☕☕

This place deserves 10 out of 5 stars!!! The castle is amazing itself as well as the modern restoration and information regarding how they did it. And just when you think you're done there's a whole other area filled with slightly more modern furniture, clothing, metalwork and more! Be sure to give yourself lots of time. I'm a slow museum visitor but I don't think I could see it all in one day.

I could’ve spent easily 2 more hours in there. I learned so much about Turku’s (and Finland in general) history at this museum. The staff is kind and helpful and eager to explain. I wish the lighting could be a little brighter because there were some exhibit notes that I couldn’t read because of how dim the castle was. The castle can also be rented out for special occasions like weddings and such! I was grateful that most rooms had its exhibit notes translated in English.

Despite Turku Castle's rich history and knowledgeable staff, our overall experience was marred by an unexpected policy regarding ticket validity. On our first visit, we purchased tickets in the late afternoon but didn't have time to explore the entire castle. When we returned the following day to continue our tour, we were informed that we needed to purchase new tickets, despite having paid €14 each for the original tickets.
While some of the staff members were genuinely passionate about sharing the castle's history, our encounter with the older lady at the reception left a sour taste. Her dismissive attitude and the lack of flexibility regarding ticket validity tarnished our overall impression of the castle. It's disheartening to see a place with such a rich heritage adopting a money-oriented approach that prioritizes ticket sales over customer satisfaction.
We suggest that Turku Castle consider extending the validity of their tickets to 24 hours, allowing visitors to fully explore the castle at their own pace without the burden of purchasing multiple tickets. This change would be more customer-friendly and align with the spirit of a historical landmark that deserves to be appreciated and understood in its entirety.

Turku Castle, Linnankatu 80, 20100 Turku
Among Finland’s most prized pieces of national heritage, as well as one of its oldest buildings, Turku Castle took shape in the late-1200s during Finland’s Swedish period.
It was built to defend their province of Eastland but took on all sorts of different roles over the next few centuries: It was a luxurious palace, administrative centre, seat of government, warehouse and then a prison right up to the end of the 1800s.
Following a delay, the building was finally renovated in 1987 and is now a museum.
Currently under maintenance and repair activities.

Luostarinmäki is a museum that showcases handicrafts and is situated in Turku's lower-class quarter. The 19th-century wooden workshops and houses that make up the museum survived the Great Fire of 1827, and have been preserved since then. The outdoor museum comprises workshops of 30 artisans, including a silversmith, watchmaker, baker, potter, shoemaker, printer and cigar shop. Visitors can witness craftsmen in period costume practicing their trades.
Highlight of our Turku visit. A living museum, with real life actors which are handmaking e.g. souvenirs for the shops. A lot of small Details everywhere.

This is one of the only set of houses kept in tact from the Great Fire. Many buildings are unlocked, allowing you to see rooms that are maintained and restored to demonstrate living conditions and livelyhood. There are friendly staff who are in certain homes, there to help explain details of the village.
There is only one entrance, so you'll have to walk around depending on your approach. It is very walkable from the town center and worth a visit if you come to Turku.

This is truly hipster place, worth of at least half a day visit, if not the whole day visit. I didn't know that, arrived 1,5 hours before the closing time, and managed to explore up to 5 houses.
Every building presents some craftsmanship from the past, with a lot of examples. Sometimes there are people that work at the place, presenting their craftsmanship directly to the visitors.
A lot of information is written on the information tables, but you can use also audio guide scanning QR codes placed at the information tables.

Visitor friendly convenient place, lockers available to store luggage. Nice place to visit for all ages. Free audio guides available on the cloud. A living history museum, describing life in the city of Turku in the 19th century, before the fire in 1827.
A neighborhood of wooden houses is being recreated on the spot, where each sub-house is located in a residential environment around an inner courtyard
In the various complexes, physical, museum and interactive displays are set up (through role-playing games, some of which are simulated, playing ancient games outside and computerized 3D moves in the city of Turku, most of which does not exist today due to the fire)
In the complex there is a cafe and a souvenir shop.
The place is fascinating, fun for both adults and children!

Luostarinmäki is an open-air museum located in Turku, Finland. It's a historical area that showcases the preserved wooden houses and shops from the 18th and 19th centuries, providing visitors with a glimpse into the city's past. The museum offers a unique opportunity to explore the daily life and craftsmanship of that era. It's a popular attraction for tourists interested in Finnish history and culture.
Turku Cathedral, the main Lutheran church in Finland, is a large brick Gothic structure that has been reconstructed multiple times after destructive fires. The cathedral, consecrated in 1300 and restored after a fire in 1827, boasts impressive frescoes and royal tombs as well as a religious museum featuring medieval sculptures and other artifacts. Visitors can also enjoy free summer concerts showcasing the cathedral's organ on Tuesdays at 8pm.
Good place to visit if you’re in Turku and you will be astonished if you imagine about the time it was built!
View from the outside is great and there’s no entry ticket.

In a generally low-rise city centre, Turku Cathedral is a striking, dominant presence. Externally, it has the appearance of many alterations across the centuries, whereas first impressions inside are of a harmonious, peaceful place. More detailed exploration will show all the ways it has changed over the years, but it is an interesting church to explore, with variously chapels and monuments revealing a long and complex history. It’s also worth spending a little time sitting and soaking up the tranquility amidst the busy city outside.

Beautiful cathedral. Very unusual look to it. There is a small museum upstairs that only costs 2 euro and I think it was interesting and definitely worth the few minutes it took to go up. There are some very cool models of the cathedral from various stages in its history. The visit has spurred me to read up a little more about the history of Turku and the great fire.

It was the most beautiful and wonderful church I have ever been to visit in Northern Europe. As soon as I entered, the sound of pipe organ ensemble, which sounded meek, and the quiet, sacred interior, was really beautiful. I entered without expecting much but the inside was so beautiful that I stayed in the cathedral for 30 minutes.

Unless you are very much into churches, the best way for me to enjoy this building is to sit at the outside restaurant/food stand area close by, and just chill there. You will have the church in the background for the pictures, and at the same time, the feeling that you are in the city center.

The cathedral is an amazing piece of history. Not only is the building still in use and beautifully maintained, they have also taken care to preserve the evidence of its many incarnations. The models showing its transformation over the centuries was well worth the visit. But then there was more! Statues, metalwork in silver and pewter, and textiles dating back centuries. One of the most moving buildings I have had the pleasure of visiting. ♥️♥️♥️

"Proper Finland" is the oldest part of the country, and the Cathedral of Turku represent the place in which Finland, as we know it today, took its' first steps. The old graves under the cathedral are just like in the middle Europes cathedrals, but in addition, there are, for example miniatures from the vessels that were absolute life line for Finns for centuries. Turku Cathedral is part of everyday life even today. At the time of the visit, there were exhibition from Ukraine and children's music school.

Turku Market Hall is a charming spot located in the restaurant quarter, featuring Piece of Cake, a delightful cafe by MBakery. The cafe offers an array of delectable pastries, cakes, and savory treats. Visitors can also purchase freshly baked bread and popular Turku chocolates here. Additionally, Turku Castle is a significant landmark in Finland and a must-see attraction in the city.
Aboa Vetus Ars Nova is a museum located in a former palace that showcases both contemporary art and archaeological ruins. On the upper level, visitors can view exhibitions featuring modern art at Ars Nova. English-language tours are available daily during July and August and are included in admission fees.
After the visit to the Aboa museums, I just felt very complacent and more enlightened. It was a very joyous experience. Must see in Turku!

As someone who is not a fan of modern art, my heart sank at the linking of a contemporary art museum with an archaeological museum. However, it turned out that it was possible to buy a ticket for what claims to be Finland’s only archaeological museum. It is the remains of a small section of the late medieval riverside, and a model when you enter gives a hypothetical reconstruction of how the area may have appeared. It requires some imagination, but it is fun just to explore the ruins. There are boards with maps to show how Turku changed and grew over the centuries, and plenty of information for context.

The museum takes you on to journey of old Turku from the 13th century. The exhibition has English translations for most of the descriptions.
I liked that they also have many games for children and alike, according to the theme of history.
The museum itself is not that big and won't take too much of your time even though you dig deeper with descriptions. I can safely say there is nothing super exciting as well, but you can have a great time with friends and family.
Care to take some coat with you inside the museum. The site pretty chilly in winter times.

The downstairs exhibition was really interesting and educational. We learned a lot of useful information in the historical section, and I particularly enjoyed looking at the reconstructed animal skeletons. There were also a lot of beautiful tapestries displayed in the art section. Unfortunately the upstairs part of the museum was rather disappointing. Most of the modern art was something, which my 4-year-old students could easily produce without much help.

While it was never an actual pharmacy, the museum has been fully recreated with donations from numerous Finnish pharmacies and even features a dispensary. Visitors can enjoy discounted rates and lockers are available for storage. The experience is brief but worthwhile for those interested in learning about Finland's past.
An intimate and charming historical museum, which allows a glimpse into the life of a family of pharmacists who lived in simple and beautiful wooden buildings around a magical courtyard in the center of Turku, near the Aura River.
The museum is very accessible to children, and includes, among other things, a simulated period pharmacy where they can play and charming sensory experiences.
The workers on site in period clothing add to the atmosphere.
In the place there is a charming cafe where delicate tables are set with period dishes, and there are excellent cakes (!!!) baked on the spot.
Please note that you can enter the complex through the facade overlooking the river (directly to the museum) and through the magical courtyard from which there is also direct access to the coffee barrel.

Absolutely delightful~ So in-depth, you can get lost in every room for eternity and that's even before you enter the museum side. The incredibly well-preserved pieces of history work well in conjunction with each other, making the experience well worth it.
As someone who doesn't usually buy anything from gift shops, the items there are very in touch with the theme of the place, so an extra credit for that one as well for making me give in to temptation. The quality of items is greater in many places as well :)

One of the best places for coffee, which by the way is traditional pan coffee. And the hand made cakes are so delicious.

Small well conserved museum. Held in an old wealthy family house. It has never been a pharmacy but it was fully recreated with donations from many pharmacies in Finland. They have even built a whole dispensary. There are discounts for students and lockers. The visit is shot and worth it.

Kind Staff who work in old clothes often show up whenever I take pictures or they put more candles to help me take pictures. For the Christmas period, the museum also recreated the food people ate during the Christmas season. By the way, I was so surprised to see Mannequin sitting on the piano in the girl's room.

Nice experience. Something to do with Luostarinmaki if you want to discover the old times of Finland.
I think they could improve the experience with more interactive screens like in the first room to get descriptions about the objects in the different rooms of the museum.
The Botanic Garden of University of Turku is a stunning attraction that houses over 5000 plant species, including succulents, tropical plants, roses, medicinal and edible plants, and rock plants. The outdoor garden is particularly beautiful in the summer and offers a variety of walking trails, lakes, and charming bridges. Visitors can explore the greenhouses for a fee or enjoy the outdoor area for free.
Absolutely breathtaking, even in the winter.
The outdoor garden is way prettier in the summer, but the greenhouses are always worth the visit. The garden is easy to travel through and the plants are interesting.
The information given about the plants all around is pretty deep and you can always learn something new when you visit, and it's not that expensive.
100% would recommend for people of all ages and backgrounds.

You can find almost 5000 different kinds of plants there.
The outside garden is free but inside is 9 euro per adult.

Very nice gardens inside and outside. I came in November so the outside wasn't quite blooming, but I still saw plenty of colors, and the walk was very peaceful. The greenhouse has a cool architectural design and the assortment of flora is extensive. If you're driving down the archipelago, I highly recommend stopping by.

Michael's Church is a striking example of neo-Gothic architecture, featuring an impressive 252-foot steeple and three vaulted interior aisles. Completed in 1905, the church is renowned for its elegance, intricate design, and excellent acoustics. Located north of the city, it exudes an imposing presence with its solid and massive structure pushing towards the sky. The church's apse boasts beautiful mosaics that reflect light at sunset.
Very nice place! Silence, not much people... Read its history before visiting. Sometimes you may listen to organ music.

Imposing, located North of the city, it seems to want to push its spires towards the sky, almost to balance its solid and massive structure, even more evident by observing the low aisles. The mosaics in the apse are beautiful and at sunset allow reflections of light to filter through.

Very atmospheric, elegant, beautiful, intricately designed church with nice acoustic. Mishaels church is a distinguished example of the neolithic style in architecture. And is one of the most popular weddings churches in Turku, being able to seat 1800 people. Church was finished in 1905

Beautiful church with wonderful staff. Note that I came here on a Sunday, and they have mass (in Finnish) at 11am. If you were like me and read that they have organ (instrument) demonstrations at noon, please note that they do not happen in the summer unfortunately. It still is beautiful to look at though.
Also note that when you check the doors for entry, try the main entrance first (3 doors) and the middle (2nd) right door (pull) is your best bet.
This Church is also a Pokémon Go Gym ;P

Kupittaa Park is a vast green space located in Turku, Finland. This district serves as both a recreational and business hub for the area. The park features sports fields, a swimming pool, and an adventure park for children. It was the first landscaped park in any Finnish city and remains one of the best parks around with its bird pond, mini golf course, traffic park and large play areas to keep kids entertained.

The Wäinö Aaltonen Museum of Art is an international modern art museum that boasts a significant collection of the Finnish sculptor's work. The museum is currently showcasing some excellent exhibitions such as Dead Souls, Pekka ja Teija Isorattya, and Lilja's Garden which tells the story of an eight-year-old with a rare disease. This intimate museum situated on the Aura riverside features a cafe inside and makes for a perfect Sunday walk destination.
A beautiful and elegant museum with cultural activities for children and adults like painting and music.
Some of the exhibitions were surprise, and some of them shared the viewers.

Beautiful exhibition! This musuem is relatively small (compared to other modern art museums I've visited), so maybe they're extra keen on what they exhibit, because I found the combination of the main exhibition very well matched.

My favourite art museum in Turku. There is no permanent exhibition but they do have their collection which they use from time to time. Check their website for the current exhibition. There is a cafeteria also in the same building.

One of the nicest museums in Turku in my opinion - the shows are often very interesting and the museum is not too big, yet you can easily spend a nice few hours enjoying the shows.
I also like the little Cafe Wäinö, they often offer some vegan goodies which is a huge plus. Also the little shop area is adorable, you can often find postcards and jewelry etc from local artists in there.

Wide variety of interesting changing exhibitions and always a few Aaltonen’s own works available as well.
The cafe also serves a nice affordable and filling lunch, often in the Finnish tradition.

A modern museum, beautiful but not what I expected. It has a few art pieces, some of them not so understandable to the majority of people. It could be much more interesting because the building is big and imposing. In addition the entrance fee is high compared to the exhibites.

This is the second art museum that I have visited and I have to say this one beats the other one by a longshot. It's nice and roomy so there useally isn't a problem with too many people being in the way. The best part about this though in my opinion is the workshop that they have here. There you can create your own art and other people can see it. You can also find a nice cafe here too. I give 5/5
Immerse yourself in the rural charm of Finland at Kuralan Kylämäki, also known as Kylämäki Village of Living History. Located just a few kilometers from Turku's city center, this open-air museum offers a glimpse into village life dating back to the 1940s and 1950s. The recreated village features costume actors portraying post-war era activities, while a working farm with chickens, sheep, and cows adds to the authentic atmosphere.
Kuralan Kylämäki is blooming now. Summer events have started and animals are finally outdoors. Visit this place to learn about farm life, farm animals and to see the picturesque countryside. There is a small restaurant and (WC) washroom facilities along with seating arrangements in the area.

Kurala Kylämäki (Swedish: Kurala bybacke) is a museum and cultural recreation area owned by the City of Turku, which maintains the rural environment with its buildings, gardens, meadows and fields in the 1940s and 1950s.
Kurala village hill in 2004.
The village has four farms - Iso-Rasi, Vähä-Rasi, Iso-Kohmo and Vähä-Kohmo - and their 26 buildings. The area is protected by the Ancient Monuments Act in 1980, and the buildings in the town plan in 1984. The village of Kurala belongs to the Aura River National Landscape and Turku National Park, and is one of the nationally significant built cultural environments defined by the National Board of Antiquities.
Among other things, the handicrafts and working methods that have shaped the village's current traditional landscape are maintained. The buildings of Iso-Kohmo in the middle of the hill have been chosen as the core of the farm. In the experimental workshop, handicrafts are widely maintained from ancient techniques to art workshops. Involving the public and passing on handicrafts from one generation to the next is a key objective.

This is an open air museum (and it's free!). It is about 5km from the city center. It's small, but a nice place to visit. If you're only in Turku for a short time, I wouldn't say this is a must see, but if you have a little extra time, it's worth the visit.

Jukupark in Finland is a perfect spot to make the most of the short summertime. With three pools and nine slides, it offers a day full of fun activities. While some caution about potential discomfort on certain slides, overall, visitors find the park amazing. It's noted that children may not enjoy windy and cold weather, but when it's hot, Jukupark becomes an ideal place for relaxation and enjoyment.

I had a lot of fun on every slide. You just need to be carefull on blue (next to red-and-white one) and yellow (the one you go without any sweat), because it can hurt your back a little bit. Also you can hurt your butt on white-and-blue (the biggest one), so better be carefull. Except of that, this place is AMAZING.

Very small but beautiful church, awesome architecture! 5€ entrance fee is a bit too much ib my opinion, but still worth a visit. I would recommend to visit when the church opens, this way there won't be many people there.

The space inside is amazing. Make sure you check the hours the church is open before you go. And it’s easy accessible with the 54 public bus from market square.
You don’t need more than 15-30 mins as it’s pretty small and there’s nothing around, but i highly recommend visiting it. Entry ticket is 5 euros.

The stunning St. Henry's Ecumenical Art Chapel on hirvensalo Island, a shrine of metal and pine...
Most beautiful chapel!!!
Ingeniously planed and designed.
A tin shell with delicate touches of glass, blown on a stone hill. Like a giant metal leviathan stuck in a rocks.
The entrance through a small triangular facade (like an entrance to a tent) reveals a big stong interior space entirely covered with fragrant and warm solid wood. Wooden ribs create a unique rhythm in the space of the space which is entirely directed to the light.
Beauty, spirituality and light!!! warmly recommended ✨✨✨✨✨
