Sønderborg Castle, a medieval fortress constructed with bricks and situated by the waterside, has been converted into a cultural history museum. The castle provides insights into Denmark's rich history as well as that of Sonderborg itself. It is an ideal destination for tourists who want to explore the area and learn more about its past. Additionally, the castle now offers an affordable restaurant for visitors to enjoy.
One of the best museum experiences I’ve had in Denmark in one of the country’s most interesting, historic castles. Contains not only one but several, smaller exhibitions on a variety of fascinating topics relating to the castle and the region. Definitely a must if you happen to visit Sønderborg og Southern Jutland in general.

Cozy Christmas experience at this castle. The crepes outside was the best we've tried in dk. Where do they usually locate?

It's not the best Castel I've ever seen, but it is nice to walk at the seaside around

This was a lot better than I ever expected a castle to be. It's properly maintained, has great guides and a lot of stuff to read and dive into. I'm guessing this is for the historically interested and I'm guessing most pre-teens wont enjoy it much.

This mammoth of a castle is a historical treasure waiting to be explored and this history buff LOVED it!
Here's why we think you should add it to your Danish travel itinerary:
☑️ Rich History: This impressive castle has witnessed centuries of Danish History, from medieval times to modern Denmark. The exhibits offer an enlightening education into the past of the region, including its role in the Schleswig Wars and its impact on Danish identity.
☑️ Impressive Views: Commanding the shore of the beautiful Als fjord, the castle provides spectacular views of the surrounding seascape.
☑️ Stunning Architecture: Marvel at the well-preserved Medieval and Renaissance architectural features that make Sønderborg Slot a true gem.
☑️ Cultural Experiences: Immerse yourself in the local culture with the many exhibitions, events and guided tours, that shed light on the castle's past and the heritage of the region of Sønderjylland.
Whether you're a history enthusiast like me, a castle lover or just looking for a memorable experience, Sønderborg Slot has something for everyone!

A beautiful place. The main reason for our visit was the exhibition of WW1. It took us all afternoon just in that one floor (there are 3 in total). Information in Danish, German and English. Lots of information we didnt know and lots of artifacts.

This place is deceptively big inside, there is a lot to see. I enjoyed it, learned a lot about the wars and how Sønderborg has developed over the years. I would say that it's a nice place to visit if you're interested to know the history of this place from the middle ages to nowadays.

Whenever and/or wherever you go...it is, in my opinion, essential to learn and explore your destination...even just a smudge.
Great place that showed and provided interesting historical information. It's not an "in and out" site. If you truly want to discover and you're an enthusiast...a visit here will be worthwhile!

I have been to this sight twice now in total, once in 2019 with the family and now in 2021 also once, but with a friend. Both times I liked it very much. You really get the history of Denmark and of the castle and Sønderborg itself. If you are in the area and are looking for a nice trip, I recommend this enormously. It is very affordable for what you get, and nowadays it also has a little restaurant. This was not yet the case in 2019, but now it is in 2021. Recommended.

Plentiful of danish history from the earliest days of the Sønderborg Castles origin to world war two and the late 70s. Unfortunately the facade was under renovation at the time and some of the exhibition was closed of. An audio tour of the museum would be wonderful as there is a lot of tekst and some times very small to read. All in all a very good tour.

A must place to see in Sønderborg in southern Jutland. The museum has en excellent collection of regional art of 2 world wars and cultural history. Amazing to see the museum as there so many things have been preseve in order one to see the long history from 1570 in Denmark.
That was amazing experience!
Jacob, the museum worker, very dedicated and open person, aimed to share the information about the battle in the best possible way. He was very kind to translate the lecture from Danish to English.
Moreover, he has provided a lot of interesting facts.
So far, that was a great time.
Recommended for families with kids and dogs:)

The people are very motivated and the Presentation of single History-parts are well prepared. The Canon Shot ist a must have!!! Everything was nice and clean, even at wet outdoor- conditions!!!
I have only minus point: I believe that english presentations would make it even better for international guests. There are already foreign parts (movie and Market) but the personal and potentially very detailled explanations of the staff are mainly in danish.

It is an interesting historical place for the battle that happened here. Mostly for Germans and Danes. Even though it was back in 1864, there's a lot of information about who was fighting and who died. It was also the first time the Red Cross was there to help.

Very interesting exhibition with lots of history about what happened in the months of 1864. Unfortunately it is a very small site and you can see it all in a few hours. But if you add some walking routes in the surrounding area to see the ancient battle positions it will take longer.
Support history and visit this site if you are in the area.

Historic place. Denmark and Germany in war in 1884. Very realistic place to visit. Definitely worth a visit also for families with children. There are lots of realistic buildings and exhibits. Once you have visited the place, you can go down to Dybbøl mill. Is it a summer day you visit the place, lies Vemmingbund beach, not far from there. A lovely beach

Really cute. All personel were very friendly and knowledgeable! The best part was the actors telling stories. All signs are in danish, German and English. We saw storytellers speaking danish and German.
The museum both inside and outside is dog friendly

Great museum. Very educational for young and old. The staff are very friendly.
Dybbøl Mill, a reconstructed 19th-century windmill in Denmark, houses a museum featuring exhibits on the area's history. It holds significant historical importance as it was the site of Prussia and Austria's victory over Denmark in 1864. The windmill may not stand out compared to others in Denmark, but the surrounding area offers lovely views. For a fee of 50 Danish crowns, visitors can enjoy a well-made small museum with souvenirs available for purchase.
Tickets required only if you want to see museum. Visiting flag area and outside mill is completely free.

Very historically important place for Denmark. The windmill itself isn't that special compared to other windmills around in Denmark, but the area is lovely and the view is great. It was here Prussia and Austria defeated Denmark in 1864 and took parts of Schleswig.

Nice bit of history about a time in Denmark history. Only had time to tour the windmill but we'll worth the stop and entry fee. Great views from the windmill and memorial hill.

Very interesting and fun. Especially combined with the Dybbøl Banke across the street. I wish the information was available in English aswell, but the German information is very helpfull too.

A fine experience at a fine price, the exhibition inside Dybbøl Mølle is based on the historical battle between Germany and Denmark. The location is amongst the most beautiful views, in the flat kingdom of Denmark.

Pretty much what you would expect, for 50 Danish crowns you can see a small museum, that is made really well. Nice souvenirs too.
The multikulturehuset is pretty new building and located In great location by the harbour. The place has a fantastic view to the sea. It’s a building with so much books to get one's appetite to browse and read. There many more relevant informations in arts and history about Sønderborg and Sønderjylland. The place is a haven for students and children and visitors if love reading. The place has coffeeshops also in the ground floor and lots of tables and chairs outside facing to the sea. Very beautiful moden building architecture which I’ve always adored Danish concept building design which known for its global modern unique design.

A well-digitized library, featuring books in Danish, English, and German, as well as several board games and video games.
There are also public computers (careful about typing sensitive information) and a website and app where you can reserve books if you want one and it isn't at this specific library; or extend loans on material if no one else has reserved it; or repay late fees.
TL;DR: Great library that has many different things in it and you can use through the Internet.

Eye-pleasing decor, phenomenal views of the Alssund canal and the Alsion building. There's a place where you can enjoy a coffee, everything is kept clean and there's plenty of well-maintained toilets available. It means that it's hard to find a better place for reading a book or learning.
