Putuo Zongcheng Temple is a sprawling mountainside temple with vibrant pagodas, halls, and towers that boasts of Tibetan architecture. Visitors can also access the neighboring temple built to Tibetan Buddhism traditions on the exterior but Han Chinese in style in the interior. This place used to be a meeting point for Mongolian and Dzungarian chieftains who practice similar forms of Buddhism as Tibetans.
Buying a ticket to here also gives you access to the temple slightly to the east of here. This temple was built to Tibetan Buddhism traditions on the outside but the inside is more Han Chinese style. Mongolian and Dzungarian chieftains were met here because their style of buddhism is also Tibetan. Going up and down takes 1 hour. If you want to go with a guide, it'll take 2 hours. This place and Puning Temple are the two best temples in the 8 outer temples.

We have visited the Mountain Resort, Putuo Zongcheng (Potala Palace) Temple and Puning Si Temple in Chengde and for me this one was the best of all. The temple is large, complex and very pleasant. While climbing to the top it always seems like there is already an end coming, but then you discover a new building, room, place or staircase leading further up and find something new and unexpected on the way. Really recommended!

The Putuo Zongcheng monastery was built by Emperor Qianlong to accomodate visits by the Dalai Lama of Tibet. Be prepared to climb many stairs to see great views and to see fascinating views of the interior.

(Translated by Google) The Putuo Zongcheng Temple, also known as the "Little Potala Palace", is a UNESCO World Heritage Site built in the 36th year of Emperor Qianlong's reign in the Qing Dynasty. It was built by Emperor Qianlong to celebrate his 60th birthday and the 80th birthday of Empress Dowager Chongqing. A Buddhist temple built to imitate the Potala Palace in Tibet. Because Emperor Qianlong met with the returning leader of the Torgut tribe, Obaxi (the great-grandson of Ayuqi Khan), in this Hall of Wanfaguiyi, in order to get rid of the oppression of Tsarist Russia, he led his troops to break through the heavy interceptions of Tsarist Russia. After untold hardships, victory came to Qing Dynasty. The interior display retains the yurts, cultural treasures and Buddha statues from that time, which is a successful example of the integration and re-creation of Chinese and Tibetan architecture.

Puning Temple is a significant Tibetan Buddhist temple located within the Qing Dynasty's Summer Palace. Constructed in 1755, it boasts of impressive Budala-style architecture and a massive wooden statue of Guanyin towering at 22 meters high. This representation of Avalokitesvara features 1000 arms and eyes and weighs an astonishing 110 metric tons. Visitors must not miss this stunning attraction, which also includes a smaller scale version showcasing the intricate details of the upper body.
This place is definitely worth a visit because of the MASSIVE statue of Guanyin (Avalokitesvara) contained in the main temple. I'd say if you had to choose one temple, choose this one. The Guanyin itself is extremely impressive but no pictures are allowed. It's enough to just stand there and gawk at it. It's one of those 1000 arm, 1000 eyed representations. They have a smaller scale version too so you can see the details of the upper body.

This Tibet Buddhism temple is in the summer palace of qing dynasty, a major and important one. The architecture is similar to Budala style. The huge budda I side is weighted 110 metric tons and is made of five kinds of wood. It's a must visit place.

We have visited the Mountain Resort, Putuo Zongcheng (Potala Palace) Temple and Puning Si Temple in Chengde and I definitely preferred the temples over the Summer Resort, although only a slight bit. I believe the most appealing in Puning Si will be the main building with the world's tallest wooden buddha sculpture (over 20 meters tall) and the temple grounds with hobbit-like doors.

The 外八庙 is a spectacular tourist attraction featuring a grand temple complex designed in the Tibetan style, dating back to the 1700s. The site boasts an exquisite landscape of gardens that complement the majesty of the architecture. One of its most prominent features is a colossal statue honoring Kwan-Yin, which leaves visitors in awe. This historic destination offers visitors an opportunity to explore beautiful temples with intricate details and learn about ancient cultures and beliefs while marveling at their exceptional beauty.

💐[Chengde] is a very good tourist city (not far from Beijing... We drove there for about 3 hours from Beijing (you can also take the Beijing-Chengde line train from Beijing to Chengde...), there are relatively few people, and the place is close to the mountains and the air outside the Great Wall Good!) The Eight Outer Temples and the Summer Resort are all together, suitable for a 2 or 3-day trip. There are many delicious foods... There are many kinds of pasta, authentic and real! In particular, we recommend delicious local delicacies such as venison or venison dumplings, etc. The prices are also lower than in Beijing! 😋😋😋👍👍👍

Pule Temple, located in Chengde, is part of the Eight Outer Temples and was constructed during Emperor Qianlong's reign in 1766. Covering a vast area of 24 square kilometers, it features traditional Chinese structures like the Hall of Mountain Gate, bell tower, drum tower, Hall of Heavenly Kings, and more. The temple's architecture is a blend of Han and Tibetan styles.
Really, easy to get to and in the same place as anyuan temple and the lift to go to the hammer rock. The inside of the main temple, especially the ceiling is pretty nice. Like all the other temples, it's styled like a mixture of Han and Tibetan Buddhism. It was 30 rmb for me but I went during the off season.

Attributed to my lack of knowledge and ignorance to the Qing history, frankly, I don't have much memory or impression about this temple except that this temple has a strong Mongolian culture elements, which is the unique characteristics of this temple. And, for what it worth, I like that there's less crowd in this temple and the meaning of this temple, universal happiness. The name Pule in Chinese, literally means Universal Happiness, the emporer named it after Fan Zhongyan's (范仲淹) "The Story of Yueyang Tower" (《岳陽樓記》), "worry and worry before the world, and happiness after the world"(「先天下之憂而憂,後天下之樂而樂」).

We booked a private English Speaking driver through TripAdvisor. It worked beautiful and our driver was great. Chengde is a small city by Chinese standards about 3.5 million people. Chengde is in the Hebei province about 250 KM northeast of Beijing and was established during the Qing-dynasty as an imperial summer residence. The city’s core remains the 18th-century Mountain Resort palace complex. To give you a perspective. We visited on a Friday…leaving Beijing at 5 a.m. and arrived in less than 2.5 hours. However, our drive back to the city on Friday afternoon took us over 5 hours. It was long, tiring and filled with accidents. We also traveled during the National Holiday in October so there were more people out and about than normal.
The Summer Mountain Resort was built on a lake and had at least 36 different points of interested. At each point there was a different description such as: 1) This is where one would be entertained by music 2) this is where one would relax in the morning sun and warm oneself or 3) this is a place where one would be entertained by jesters. It was kind of funny to me that they took the time to point this out. They had buildings at all these sights, many of which were closed.
As we walked the property, My husband stated the obvious, you know why the emperor chose this location. It was simply gorgeous and relaxing, even with the holiday crowds. Everywhere you looked there was something new to look at and something interesting to see. The space was beautiful and we are from the State of Washington in the US.
You entered the main campus through what felt like a village and a museum like area with artifacts. We did not spend a lot of time here because it was incredibly crowded. Then you walked down a hill and the beauty opened up to you. We headed to the island in the middle of the lake first and worked our way over to the palace.
We chose to stay to the right and walk along the stone pathway. The path we took was long and along the waters edge. The inlet was built in the early 1700's. Their was a boat out in the water that day that had a lady dancing to someone playing the harp on it. The music filled the valley. It was so peaceful and relaxing as we walked along the waters edge.
The temple is a long way over, so plan for walking shoes, but the walk is beautiful. We enjoyed the walk as a family and had fun along the way. As we approached the palace, we chose to climb up to it along a rock path in the back and among the trees. You can take a boat over the the palace if you chose and the boat drop off point was in the front. The main entrance was packed on the holiday week and you could hardly move, so our access point made getting to the top fairly easy. As we approached the top and looked back, we noted a garden on the other side of the hill. We had to go take a look at that as well.
Over all it was a busy 3 hours for us. You could spend all day at the property, enjoy a picnic along the lake. Because we had the driver for only one day, we moved on to our next adventure.

The Mountain Resort (the Qing dynasty's summer palace), in Hebei Province, was built between 1703 and 1792. It is a vast complex of palaces and administrative and ceremonial buildings. Temples of various architectural styles and imperial gardens blend harmoniously into a landscape of lakes, pastureland and forests. In addition to its aesthetic interest, the Mountain Resort is a rare historic vestige of the final development of feudal society in China.

Lots of things to see. But they are very far apart from each other so be prepared to walk a lot. Also, not a lot of wildlife.
Qingchui Peak Forest Park, situated near Chengde Mountain Resort and Putuo Zongcheng Temple, is an exquisite park renowned for its Danxia landform. Within the park lies a tall and steep stone column that reaches towards the heavens. Due to its resemblance to a traditional laundry tool called Qingchui, Emperor Kangxi christened it as Qingchui Peak. This park offers pleasant strolls leading to attractions such as Sledgehammer Peak and Frog Rock.
You can either walk up to the peak or take a cable car. Cable car is closed in winter. Walking, you should take the trail the starts at Pule Temple parking lot. They open at 8:30 in the winter. You need to buy a ticket (30rmb) to walk up. Along that trail, you will see the frog rock and then end up at the hammer mountain. Going up takes about 1.5 hours if you stop and take pictures. If you see signs saying "next mountain", that's just an incorrect translation. It just means "the way down".

A nice park for taking an easy stroll to the Sledgehammer Peak and Frog Rock. There are a few steps on the way, but its worth the effort as you will be rewarded by great views. Please bear in mind that in China most touristy places are paid for and this one is no exception (entry fee was 50 CNY per person in November 2016).
