The Grote or Sint-Laurenskerk is a remarkable Protestant church, renowned for its unique architecture and historical significance. Constructed between 1449 and 1525, this stunning church has undergone significant restoration work after being damaged during WWII. The current exhibition, which runs until July 7th, is an exceptional display of interactive screens that provide insight into the church's rich history.
Gorgeous old church with marvelous architecture that has repurposed to be museum;
to fully appreciate what this place have, I suggest you follow trail in flyer that you can pick in entrance;
It have enormous musical instruments with steel pipes, historic painting of heaven and hell in the ceiling, many gravestones, carving, small clock in the center of the church, educational interactive screens that explain the history of this church, clean toilet, merchandise and coffee shop.
It located close to the cheese market and short walking distance from station.
Last time I visit the entrance fee is free.
Definitely a must visit when in Alkmaar.

Very quiet place to walk around and catch a break from the busy Alkmaar centre. Free toilets and a coffee bar. And because it is also a museum it has a kiosk with souvenirs.
Juli 2023 the saffolding was up for repairs on the main stained glass window. Too bad we didn't get to seemit, but we did get to take a €5 climb up the scaffolds to get to the top and inspect the buildings facade and enjoy the views.
Lovely people and well organized.
I wasn't a big fan of the expanding foam art. But it definitely was special.

Lovely church. The current display (thru 7 July 2019?) is fabulous! It describes & details the history of the church through the use of interactive screens. An added bonus is photos of locally well-known photographer depicting 7 signs of mercy.

Huge indoor space, beautiful woodwork especially in the ceiling. A climb up into the galleries is possible for the nimble. Helpful guides tell the story of the building.

Visited the church twice with an event. First was on top of the church looking out over Alkmaar. They let you walk just below the ceiling as well to see the historic paintings. An epic building indeed. Later went their for a musical performance. Great scene and well organized.

Stedelijk Museum Alkmaar, established in the 1800s, showcases both fine art and historical artifacts. For those curious about Alkmaar's past, De Victorie gallery offers an interactive history of one of its founding moments. The Alkmaar Prachtstad gallery features important moments from the city's past and present with graphic design and multimedia exhibits.

Nice museum, but currently one floor is under renovation, so paying full price you don't get the full experience. Although, we were given a voucher to return once the renovations are complete. This doesn't really help tourists, though.

Beautiful building, but otherwise too little value for money, despite the announcement that part could not be viewed due to redevelopment.
Unless you have a museum annual pass, if you really want to go, it is advisable to only go when renovations are completed. It's a bit sad that you now pay the full price while the most important part turns out not to be visible and that it has not been considered to apply a reduction on the entrance fee.
In addition, 16 euros per person is really too much for something you can get in half an hour. you have seen everything that is accessible. For that amount you can spend a day wandering around the Louvre. It is therefore disproportionate.

Lovely museum! If you’re interested to learn a hit more about Alkmaar’s history, hit “De Victorie” gallery first - fun and interactive history of one of the founding moments of Alkmaar. Upstairs you can find the “Alkmaar Prachtstad” gallery, which features various important moments from the city’s past and present including a cool graphic design and fun movies and interactives.
Art history more your thing? “Alkmaar and the Golden Age” is a gallery with some gorgeous 17th century paintings, and there’s also modern/contemporary art from the Bergen School of painting.
The café has original and very tasty food, the shop is mainly books.

Nice museum overall, and the Bergense School expo was particularly interesting. Not too big of a museum, which I find quite nice. This helps you focus on what you're seeing instead of focusing on 'seeing it all in one go'.

Musume has good measurement of COVID-19. The staff is friendly. It’s worth for EUR 12 to visit the museum and it’s very interesting to see the past of 15-16 centuries how Alkmaar fought with Spanish and got rich because of the trading. Worth to visit ;)

A very nice provincial museum with two main subjects/accents: history en the 'Bergse school' style of modern painting, about 1910-1930. An extensive exhibition about the siege of Alkmaar, 1573, with eye witness accounts and many objects from that era, the birth of the Dutch nation.
This is by far one of the most impressive and special museums I've ever visited. The museum is primarily the owner's own collection and he has stories for every item--made all the more impressive by the fact that it's an entire BUILDING of artifacts, two warehouse-sized rooms absolutely filled to the brim with diverse pieces and research. The displays range from incredibly rare albums and covers to curios like BEATLES BRAND MOTHBALLS. It truly conveys the scope of not only their music, but their cultural influence and how ubiquitous they became. The info boards are in both Dutch and English and contain a wealth of information. The owner's written a ton of books on the Beatles, to the point that they actually used his work as supporting research for a lawsuit. The museum itself is a labor of love--passion in every display. The Elvis portion has a surprising number of his personal belongings, such as clothes and jewelry, as well as a dedicated room with comfortable chairs for viewing Elvis concert recordings. The Sea Transmitter Ships are also not to be missed! I was honestly thrilled by them--absolutely beautiful, stunning, meticulous work coupled with research boards about the history of ship transmission and how it impacted music history. We arrived at opening and have to go back--it was too much to take in at once. I can't recommend this museum highly enough. If you go anywhere in Alkmaar, it should be here.

Stumbled upon this museum during a trip to Alkmaar. Massive collection of Beatles memorabilia and information. Run by a Beatles fan and his wife who were happy to chat about all things related to the Beatles. They have lots of books (many written by the owner himself), records and souvenirs for sale and I manged to buy a book I had been looking for for years, although I think the owners run the museum primarily out of a love of the Beatles rather than to make money.
They also have a smaller Elvis museum and a small boat exhibition on the site.
Well worth making the trip to Alkmaar for.

Waw guys that was really a beautiful experience. The museum is big and there are so many rare things to see. Just think that only one collector did everything himself. Azing the founder of the museum is a surprising person, source of many news on the Beatles. You could be inspired by him.
I really recommend to go, take a trip to the museum, it's amazing! and you have there a super nice souvenir shop as well.
Gianluca Panza — Google review
I'm sure that die-hard Beatles fans will love it, but this wasn't for me or my teenage sons (who have little to no knowledge of their music). On the plus side, there's a amazing collection of memorabilia, and all the information boards are translated to English. However, it's quite a passive experience that felt like looking through a collection with no real explanation of what was important and why. Overall, it only captured our attention for about 20 mins and seemed very over-priced for what it was.

15€ were definitely too much for this museum. I am not a hardcore Beatles fan but i hoped for more. It was not pretty interesting and mostly just a shop were you could buy something. I would not recommend it.

(Translated by Google) At least from the outside, this town hall is very close to the most beautiful thing I know. The town hall in Leiden, for example, is also beautiful but is located on that terrible Breestraat (Broadway for the Amis) the ugliest street in the Netherlands; noisy, on the north side, always smelly from the heavy traffic. This town hall on the Laat is a bit more cozy and has that unique Dutch alternation of white and red in the brick exterior that gives it a glorious appearance. The tower is also very elegantly erected and can be seen from far and wide due to the lack of inappropriate high buildings in the center of Alkmaar. The two-sided stairs and the white lions really finish it off. You walk past it and every time its magnificence arouses in me unprecedented feelings of security and orientation. It is often underestimated what the appearance of a public building does to people. These buildings are often the heartbeat of a society and cannot really get enough attention. For example, if you compare the town hall of Den Helder with that of Alkmaar ... well. Anyway, Den Helder was of course the most bombed city in the Netherlands during the war and there were 'drop-offs' up to Alkmaar, thank God ... not.

The Stadhuis or Townhall, was built in 1509 - 1520, and is halfway along the Langestraat, which is the main street in Alkmaar. The building and tower were restored between 1911 - 1913, and the current facade is a copy of the original. The door entrance displays allegorical figures of Prudence and Justice, and the coats of arms of former mayors.

The building itself boasts an impressive fusion of old and new architecture, adding to the overall charm of the museum. Visitors can expect an interactive and educational experience while learning about the steps involved in cheese manufacturing with a special focus on Gouda cheese, one of Holland's most famous exports.

A fun little museum, especially for kids, to spend an hour learning about the Dutch history of cheese 🧀. Lots of interesting facts to learn and machinery to see. My kids really loved the Interactive games in the museum, which kept them occupied quite a bit. The ladies at the entrance are lovely and the price is very fair. You even get a nice piece of cheese when you enter the museum and the kids get to do a fun sticker puzzle through the museum. If they hand it ik at the end they get a small price. Be sure to check the movie at the back which shows an insightful story you don't want to miss. It switches between English and Dutch every so often.

Accijnstoren, also known as the Excise Tower, is a historic structure dating back to the 1600s. Originally serving as a tax office where merchants declared their goods, it stands as one of the last remaining defense and excise buildings from that era. The tower's simple square stone design with a striking blue and white central tower offers great photo opportunities against its canal backdrop. Its construction includes brick and natural stone, featuring a prominent bell used to announce imported goods.
This beautiful building called the Excise Tower was built in 1622. It has a graceful wooden tower with a loud bell. The tower served as an office: anyone who wanted to import goods had to pay tax at the Excise Tower.
Today, it serves as an office for the harbor master during the summer months.
Excise taxes used to be an important source of income for the city. The Excise Tower has an almost square floor plan and is built of brick with natural stone bands. The bridge on which the tower is partly built was once a swing bridge. This was replaced in 1903 by a drawbridge. Which has since disappeared for the benefit of traffic. A crane stood on a headland near the excise tower. This was not a water tap, but a wooden hoisting system with a treadmill to lift heavy loads from a ship onto the quay.

Jammer…

(Translated by Google) Top and unique Location in Alkmaar! Beautiful place! But for me and Mrs. it is important that it is resolved quickly and that we listen carefully to what we want to order, and this restaurant has top and top staff, sea salads and also pancakes for children. In terms of price ratio I would say mid-range!

(Translated by Google) Went here 2 weeks ago with friends. We first had a drink in the nice courtyard and then had dinner in the indoor restaurant of the old building. The service is super friendly and pleasant. Unfortunately I can't say the same about the food, the quality leaves a lot to be desired for the prices asked. Instead of a beautiful red tartare, it was very dark in color and flat in taste. The raw salmon and tuna were not of shisumi quality and very stiff in structure. The surf and turf of the main course was also mediocre. The Lobster was good, but the tenderloin, also as a main course, was stiff in structure and also smelled strange (perhaps too long in the refrigerator). We were unsure whether this was tenderloin. In my opinion too many liflafjes on the plate in the form of purees and sauces. The fish salad was more lettuce than fish unfortunately. Unfortunately, the location and staff deserve more stars than the food.

Visitors are advised to admire its beauty respectfully without staring through the windows of the houses. (Translated by Google) Nice place to buy flour. It's nice to be able to buy organic flour, bake mixes, cookies, other goodies, jam and so on. I always accidentally come during lunch time, but it is no problem for the employees to answer my questions and help me. I like that employees with (intellectual) "disabilities" are involved in this way in everyday and meaningful social participation/involvement.
For me, the advantage of buying from a mill is that the flour is unbleached and real.
